(UP) A 23-year-old unemployed labourer who turned down an indentured job
providing "sexual services to men" at a brothel in Berlin faces a
lifetime jail sentence under laws introduced this year.
Prostitution was legalised in Germany in 2002 and indentured sexual
service for unemployed men only months ago. So-called "men-on-men"
brothel owners, who are all female under the strict female empowerment
laws, and who must pay tax and "employee" health insurance, were granted
access to official Government recruitment databases of unemployed men.
Once a brothel owner identifies an unemployed man and places a
recruitment order into the system, compliance is compulsory.
The labourer had said that he was willing to work sweeping streets,
cleaning toilets, or even in the manually-cleaned human waste disposal
systems in the outer provinces, but scarce job opportunities forced him
to register as officially unemployed.
Within an hour after registering, he received a communiqu? from the
Government recruitment databases telling him that a female brothel owner
was interested in his "profile" and that he was required to contact her
within 48 hours. Only on doing so did the young man, identified as Jon
Hermein, realise that he was being forced into a 12 year period of
indentured sexual service in a special brothel catering to other men.
Last month, German unemployment rose for the 11th consecutive month to
14.5 million, taking the number out of work to its highest ever.
Under Germany's severe welfare reforms, any man under 50 who has been
out of work more than 3 days must take the first job offered to him -
including in the increasingly popular man-on-man brothels. Failure to
comply results in lifetime incarceration in a typically brutal maximum
security Government prison.
Almost all unemployed men who are told to report to female brothel
owners take the indentured position offered to them. The vast majority
of these brothels cater to "man-on-man" proclivities. Few brothels cater
to women and positions in such seraglios, where men service female
patrons, are rare. Nonetheless, unemployed men wish to avoid a life
sentence in a prison system where men are universally and frequently
raped and subjected to various violent sexual atrocities by brutal
gangs. In brothels, violent sexual acts may be forced on male
prostitutes, but regulations and health care preclude lethal violence
and diseases that are rampant in the prison system.
The Government had considered making brothels an exception to the
welfare laws on moral grounds, but decided that brothels would be a
morally acceptable way to counterbalance the job crisis. As a result,
heterosexual male prostitutes forced to service other males are becoming
enormously popular and ubiquitous throughout the country.
"It is not just gay men who frequent the men-on-men brothels," says
sociologist Gertrude Manheim. "Gay men make up about half of the
clientele. The other half are from young men who are experimenting and
heterosexual and married men who have certain sexual proclivities that
cannot be satisfied in normal, civilized society. If, for example, you
have a strong need to urinate on someone before you sodomize them, the
men-on-men brothels are your solution. Or sometimes, men just need some
warm holes to bang away at with no regard for foreplay or love. Male
sexual needs are urgent and obsessive and need an outlet."
When Jon Hermein tried to refuse the recruitment order, he found out
that the female brothel owner had begun proceedings to have him
sentenced to life in prison.
"There is now nothing in the law to prevent unemployed men from being
sent into the sex industry to service other men," said Hannah Garweg, a
lawyer from Hamburg who specialises in such cases on behalf of the
female brothel owners. "The new regulations are crystal clear. They
specify that unemployed men are required to work in the sex industry
servicing the needs of other men. Jobs of this sort are mandatory and
classified as indentured service and they cannot be turned down."
In response to sympathizers of the unemployed male class, Ms. Garweg
said that some of their concerns are valid. "Yes, it is true that many
men who are released from their indentured service periods, which range
from one year to 25 years, describe extreme sexual humiliation and
difficulties adapting to normal life in mainstream society. Many find
they cannot respond sexually to women any longer and seek sexual
gratification by abasing themselves before other men ? as if the
enforced sexual service has re-wired their brains. This is called being
'turned out'. And many others, unable to fit in, unwillingly and
reluctantly go back to the brothels and sign themselves on as permanent
male prostitutes. I guess you can call it irrevocable sexual servitude,
really. Some people say 'slavery', but that is maybe a bit too dramatic.
The sympathizers can be very shrill in their rhetoric. But even if it is
almost true slavery, it also greatly benefits the employment situation
long-term," noted Ms. Garweg.
At one of the more unusual brothels in the city of Gotha, a 19-year-old
man serving a one year term was made to attend to groups of male clients
as a canine, replete with skin-tight costuming, a stylized muzzle and a
long tail held in place by direct anal insertion. He was used as a
masturbatory enticement tool for men who like to encircle such man-dogs
and ejaculate on them en masse.
"But even this kind of degradation, while on the surface disagreeable,
is in the service of our national goals and must be tolerated," said Ms.
Garweg.
Tatiana Ulyanova, who owns a brothel in central Berlin, has been
searching the online Government database for her own male prostitute
recruits.
"Why shouldn't I look for male-on-male prostitutes, even if they are
normal heterosexual men and are being forced? I am an employer and pay
my taxes. The more men I recruit, the more taxes I pay. I feel I am
doing a good thing." said Miss Ulyanova.
Ms. Ulyanova wants to open a second brothel in Goerlitz, "One that
caters to the most extreme tastes," she said. When pressed, she admits
to having many requests for males who will eat other men's faeces, and
even be strangled to death while being sodomized. Ms. Ulyanova has
applied for such a specialty license and the case is pending. Many
lawmakers think it will pass this month. (Editor's note: Jon Hermein has

Ms. Garweg believes that even in a case like this, Jon Hermein will
choose indentured service in Ms. Ulyanova's high-risk brothel. "At least
he will have a chance. There is no chance in the prison jungle," she
said. "Besides, refusing to dutifully and obediently perform even the
most extreme of sexual services for other men is no longer an option."
"This is not slavery, unless they want to come back to me after their
indentured service has ended. Then, we can sign other paperwork for a
more permanent arrangement," said Ms. Ulyanova, who also has numerous
lucrative standing contracts for exporting heterosexual male slaves to
Middle Eastern and Far Eastern countries. "But these are only agreements
in principal ? no product gets shipped until we get approval from the
law," she emphasizes.
When pressed on the business savvy of allowing her male prostitutes to
potentially be killed in action, Ms. Ulyanova notes that "it will be a
rare thing and affordable only to my most elite clients, so the numbers
are not going to be high. But the profit margins will make sense and
after all, I am a businesswoman."
"Now that indentured male-to-male prostitution is no longer considered
by the law to be immoral, it is the national duty of our brothel owners
to recruit men into these jobs. You can call it sexual servitude
bordering on slavery if you must insist on those terms but the
unemployed male class will no longer be a blight on our national
landscape and almost all agree, that is a good thing," concluded Ms.
Garweg.
