Chapter 16
It appeared that by mutual consent no one was going to discuss anything
about the situation more relevant than sugar, more coffee and the
leaves turning.
Jeri and Jaimie watched the car roar to a stop in a whirl of leaves.
The woman driving, got out, and picked up something heavy. They watched
as she struggled and cursed to get to the barn with the object she
carried. They didn't know what was going on.
Jeri's mother slammed through the door of the barn. "Jaimie, where are
they?" Jeanette Thatcher called.
"Up here Mrs. Thatcher," Jaimie replied.
She climbed up the stairs and almost slammed a large glass figurine on
the table.
The figurine depicted a woman sitting on a bench. In her lap was a
small girl with leg braces; nearby were crutches. Next to them, was a
young boy standing close by and looking on. The shape of the bench and
a lifesaver ring next to the bench implied the scene was from some sort
of boat trip. It was obvious from the expressions on their faces that
the trio was happy. It was a warm almost Rockwellian depiction of a
mother and her children on an outing.
"Where did you get this?" Mrs. Thatcher demanded.
Jeri had approached to see what her mother carried. She recognized it
as the statue she had seen Lisa working on when they left yesterday.
She responded, "Lisa made this yesterday from all the alcohol bottles
we cleaned up."
Smack!
The slap Jeri's mother delivered to her face was so quick and loud it
startled everyone.
Jeri stood their numb.
"She couldn't have. You're lying. Where are my children?" Jeanette
replied.
"But...But that's us!" Jeri replied
Smack!
"Where are my children? How do you even know about this?" Jeri's mother
yelled.
"Mom!" Jeri cried.
Smack!
Jeri's mom had never hit her or yelled at her. She had gotten angry,
disciplined her, corrected her, sat on her, but never, yelled or hit
her. She had never even expressed displeasure at anything Lisa did.
Jeri even as a 'him' had never seen her mother act this way.
"Don't call me mother. You freak!" she yelled. She raised her hand to
strike Jeri again.
"Ma'am as a Federal Agent I will not permit you to strike this young
lady," Agent D said standing suddenly between Mrs. Thatcher and Jeri.
He firmly held her wrist in place. Mrs. Thatcher struggled then she
stopped.
"Ma'am you're obviously extremely distraught. Why don't you relax a
moment and we'll see if we can straighten this out," Agent D said.
"Miss Thatcher, this is a real comfortable chair. Do you like your
coffee with cream and sugar?" Agent C asked.
"Both" Jeri and Jeanette said simultaneously.
Jeri stood with her hand touching her stinging cheek. Tears glistened
in her eyes and leaked down her cheeks. Her face looked like her heart
was breaking. She wanted to leave.
"Darling, why don't you have a seat over here," Agent D said. "Jaimie,
would you mind standing here with her a moment?" He guided Jeri onto
one of the stools and placed the two women next to one another.
"That statue is of me and my two children about eight or nine years
ago. We were in the process of moving to New York. I'd decided to move
closer to a boyfriend of mine. The kids and I decided to take a tour of
the harbor and see the sights. We had a wonderful time that day. It was
perhaps the most perfect day we'd had in a long time. Lisa had just
told us that she wished that day could last forever. We all agreed. The
next day we found out that Lisa's condition would not get better and in
fact would probably worsen over time. I think that was the last happy
day we ever shared again together," Mrs. Thatcher said. "You see that
trip was decided on that day. We didn't have a camera and I didn't have
much money. We never had a picture of that day taken. As bad as that
is, it isn't all. Show him," Mrs. Thatcher said looking at Jeri.
Jeri shrugged confused at what she wanted.
"Show him! Damn you!" she burst into tears.
Lisa quietly rolled forward out of the shadows. Her treads were so
silent you could only hear the creak of the wood from her weight. It
was obvious she weighed a significant amount but was not too much for
the old barn's joists. Agent D wondered how she had gotten up the
stairs.
As she rolled into the light, Agent D studied her. She definitely
resembled a miniature tank and had the dome of the Star Wars robot but
there was something else that was alluring in the way her carapace
flowed from the turret. The way it curved over the sides and crested
over her treads. He would have never thought that a tank of any kind
could look sexy but then men had called ships and cars 'her' for many
years. Maybe he'd been in this business too long.
A beautiful woman blossomed before him dressed in a gossamer gown.
Agent C was fixed on the transparent gown that both hid and revealed
all its wearer's treasures. He could see the dark areola and nipple
through the cloth and yet could not see the breast except for the curve
outlined by the dress's shape. The skin below the dress at the hips and
on her hipbones was visible. However, between her thighs only a shadow
was illuminated where the light shown through from behind. At the
juncture of her thighs a hint of brown hair shown through the cloth and
yet the rest was silhouetted by the light from behind.
"Jeri doesn't know what you're talking about Mother," Lisa said, "And
so help me don't you ever hurt her again." The figure suddenly grew
into a giant that looked exactly like Lisa and Jeri's grandmother had
in her coffin. Except the figure's eyes were open and glowing yellow.
Mrs. Thatcher screamed in terror and Agent C stepped between her and
the apparition.
"Is this what you wanted to see?" Lisa asked as the apparition suddenly
returned to normal. Lisa's usual avatar once again appeared and she
pointed at the statue. "It's only visible with white light striking
from a particular direction."
Lisa was shining a white lamp on the glass. Where before it had been a
glass figure it now seemed to leap to life as colors blossomed from
within the statue to show the colors of the dress the girl was wearing
and the chrome steel of the girl's leg braces. The blue of the boy's
jeans and the green of his shirt were vibrant and almost seemed to blow
in the wind. Equally apparent were the blue of the mother's eyes with
their vitality and laughter. Somehow, the real person seemed less alive
and bowed down with burdens.
Then the angle of the light shifted just a little bit. Within the
glass, the images changed entirely. Where the little girl sat was a
miniature tank and the ghost of the avatar that Lisa used. Within the
figure of the boy was a picture of Jeri in her black dress with every
curve and point visible. Her hair was piled up with coiled tendrils
hanging beside platinum and emerald earrings. Strappy high-heeled
sandals twined up her ankle. She was smiling with a come-hither look
that could melt steel. She looked like she was going to step out of the
glass.
No one had spoken during the whole show. The detail was stunning. What
had appeared to be a statue of colorless glass had been made into a
piece of art that was alive, vibrant, beautiful and haunting.
For a moment, the group was stunned and then Jeri's mother sobbed,
"What kind of monster could create such a thing?"
Lisa responded, "What kind of woman attacks someone without cause?"
"Ladies, please!" Trisha interrupted, "Lisa what you did is beautiful,
wonderful and very interesting but, remember what your mother has been
through."
Lisa and Trisha detected the other woman who had entered the barn
earlier now leaving. She went back to the house.
Trisha continued without pause, "She is very upset and angry. Many
people have virtually tormented her. She is like the dog behind the
fence that kids walk by and poke sticks at. From her point of view it
would be cruel."
"But I wanted her to know it was us that she yelled at. I chose this
scene because she would know no one else could know. It would tell her
everyday who we are now," Lisa replied, "and she sent us away." There
were tears in the holograms eyes. "And she hurt Jeri. She should've
never hurt Jeri." She sounded like a little girl defending her friend.
"Lisa I forget sometimes how young you are. You look so mature and
knowledgeable. You were just becoming a young woman so some
alternatives may be unimaginable for you. Did your analysis include a
scenario where your mother cannot, will not, or is unable to accept a
situation where you have been changed? If your mother does not accept
that you really are Lisa and Jeremy what conclusion would she reach?
Did you allow your mother might blame you and Jeri for her children's
loss and think you are responsible? Did you think that she might resort
to violence if she thought you were keeping her from them?"
Trisha slid next to Lisa's shell and lightly touched it as she
continued, "There are people who refuse to believe man has landed on
the moon or sent robots to Mars. Some refuse to accept the Holocaust as
real or believe the Jews brought it on themselves. A human being is
readily capable of denying some fact or offering another plausible
answer. Regardless of any evidence you present your mother may still
choose to believe you are a cruel fraud."
"But I could prove..." Lisa started.
"A blood test proves what, if she chooses to believe it is fabricated
or even false? That wouldn't work at all for Jeri." Trisha stated.
Lisa paused and ran many alternative scenarios and their outcomes
through her processing centers. After a few moments she looked at her
Mom, "I'm sorry. Trisha's right I thought I could convince you. Maybe I
can but I can't force you to believe us."
Trisha spoke again, "Mrs. Thatcher I know what's happened to Lisa and
Jeri is impossible to believe. I would not believe it myself had I not
experienced it. Sometimes I don't believe what has happened to me. I
imagine Jeri doesn't believe it sometimes either."
"I used to wake up everyday and wonder why am I not in my bed? Why
don't I feel right? What happened to me? Now I only notice differences
occasionally," Jeri said.
"Why don't you tell us what happened to you Jeri?" Agent D asked. "It
would help us develop a plausible explanation for last night."
Jeri had tried to explain to her mother last night but she had refused
to believe what she was told. Even then Jeri had only skimmed over the
box and running away. With the agents she went into a lot more detail
including what she did the first night after she discovered the device.
She blushed famously but then so did her mother when she told them
where she got the vibrator she used.
Jeri described how she was thinking about the different people she
could be when it occurred to her she could transform Lisa.
"I got so excited about the transformation into a Shell and what she
might become from there that it never occurred to me to consider just
making her healthy. Of course I wasn't sure it could make her better or
do what I was thinking," Jeri explained. "I wish I had just thought of
making her healthy."
"When Lisa and I could not turn back I was ashamed. I couldn't go back
home and face my mother. I panicked and told Lisa we should run away,"
Jeri said. Tears glittered in her eyes. "We stayed at the Fisher's and
then waited until the coast was clear at the Taylor's. We fed the
animals and took off. By then Lisa was very confident we would be just
fine. I guess we have too."
Jeri continued to relate her adventures. About the time Jeri related
her experience at the 'Wild Mares' Agent C asked, "Is anyone interested
in lunch?"
Everyone agreed and Agent C volunteered to go get it. Lisa appreciated
Agent C being so nice as to go and get lunch for everyone because he
only went as far as three miles down the road.
A small company of people all wearing black suits and in plain black
unmarked vehicles met him. Lisa had been getting very nervous about
this group. Thanks to a special drone Lisa had brought with her for
just such a contingency, she was able visually to identify thirty-six
of the fifty-three people present. She was able to lock onto the cell
phone or radio signal of each car and person present and she had their
GPS tracking enabled. She was further relieved to find that all Agent C
said at that time was about the high school dance events and how to
manage the media.
When C returned he said nothing about the encounter to anyone and
passed out hamburgers, salads, and roasted chicken to everyone in the
loft. He was gone about the same amount of time as if he had gone all
the way into town and ordered from the single diner available.
Jeri finished with a modified version of the tale about the airplane
rides to Southeast Asia. She had modified some of her sexual encounters
so that they weren't so specific. Jeri had become increasingly self-
conscious as she realized just how many sexual encounters she had
experienced since she transformed herself. At first, it was an
accident. Then the next encounter was for her to decide about her
sexuality but even that was inconclusive. The airplane rides had been
for adventure. Now she realized she enjoyed making love for the
pleasure itself as well as for the opportunity to please someone else.
"Was I a homosexual and just found a way to express those desires in a
more socially acceptable way? Or am I so completely heterosexual that
whichever gender I have, the opposite is the most pleasing?" Jeri asked
herself once again.
Trisha began her story when Jeri's story merged with hers. This gave
Jeri a chance to eat her salad.
Trisha told the agents, "I am concerned about something but I am not
sure how to explain. I have no problems with killing anyone who tries
to harm me. Before Aung's men, I thought no one had the right to take
someone else's life. I guess I've been so abused by others that I just
don't care anymore. It also may be part of the makeup of a naga. I
don't know. Nagas according to mythology were the guardians to keep
evil spirits from entering our world. They also sent evil men to the
planes of the evil spirits. Therefore, I suppose that if I'm defending
myself or those I care about, I'm just following that nature. I don't
go looking for it though. I could find plenty in Kansas if I looked. I
just don't want to stir up any trouble."
"Trisha, our initial observation is that the four of you stopped a
pretty messy situation and saved at least one or two lives for sure.
The difference between being a soldier and a murderer is the motive and
purpose behind the actions. Maybe in Asia you had some latitude about
who to kill, maybe you didn't. That decision is one you have to make
and live with. I do know that we encountered at least one young man
that is certain you saved his life and is hoping that he gets to meet
you again some time," Agent D said.
Agent C spoke up, "Sometimes people are forced into circumstances that
make them do things they might not otherwise do. Agent D and I have
found that particularly true with our investigations regarding the
boxes. The consequences range from miraculously nothing to deadly to
worse than death. If it gets deadly then we take actions to protect
lives. It seems yesterday was a case where you saved lives."
Jeanette Thatcher had remained quiet through out the whole discussion.
Once in a while she made a noise or smirked at something said. Largely
she remained impassive. The fact that her body craved a drink made her
apprehensive.
Jeanette considered herself intelligent, responsible and broad-minded.
Losing her children had, she acknowledged, unhinged her a little.
Sitting with these people as they described the events in their lives
and the calm manner in which the agents recorded the information or
asked relevant questions regarding the transformations and subsequent
events did a lot to restore her mental balance. Jeanette realized that
the agents were nearing the end of their interview with the four women.
"Do you mean this isn't the only time this has ever happened?" Jeanette
asked.
"No Ma'am," Agent D responded, "we've seen this sort of thing multiple
times. Because of security clearances, I can't divulge the number of
times and types of reports that have indicated a box may have been
involved. I can tell you that the transformations your son underwent
are not very unusual. I will say that Jeri's transformation of Lisa is
the first time that we've encountered someone using the box to correct
a pre-existing health condition. I know we would like to examine Lisa's
previous medical records and compare them with her condition now."
"You know that Snow ball's chance?" Lisa said.
"I thought I would ask," Agent D said. "I also expect you don't need
this offer either but we have many resources available to help
individuals deal with the transformations they've experienced. We have
as necessary relocated people, provided job training and where
necessary provided a suitable habitat for the situation they find
themselves in. We have a reservation on some isolated Bureau of Land
Management property. We also have doctors and medical facilities for
those that need them including pre-natal and post natal care." The last
comment seemed directed at Jaimie but was made to all of the women
present.
Agent C spoke, "Counseling doesn't apply to just those who have been
transformed either. Sometimes the families of the individuals need the
counseling as much if not more."
"I'm not leaving Kansas City anytime soon. I like what we've got there
and I don't really want to be disturbed either," Lisa said. There was
an implied warning in that last part and Agent D knew she was serious.
Jeri looked at Lisa and shrugged, "It's my fault Lisa is the way that
she is. I need to stay around to help her if she needs it; although, it
seems I need her more."
"My father and mother have made it clear that they want me to stay near
them. After having been so far away I want to stay where I can see them
as often as I or they want," Trisha replied. "There are plenty of
places to hide in the woods near the river. I don't believe anyone has
spotted me yet."
"You already know how I feel," Jaimie said.
Agent D nodded. His conversation with Larry was still in the back of
his mind. He didn't know how the beautiful girl was handling her
situation. However, the interaction between the young women suggested
that they had bonded together in a manner that allowed them to help
each other. Jaimie acknowledged she was pregnant and appeared to be
comfortable with the prospect. It seemed that Lisa and Jeri had
supported her through that adjustment. He still worried about Jaimie
and would like to see her have better care than she seemed to be
getting at home.
"It seems we're finished for now," Agent D replied. "If you need us I
think you know how to contact us."
"No problem, D" Jaimie replied.
"We'll be contacting the local authorities and informing them that
Jeremy and Lisa Thatcher have been found unfortunately they were
deceased, another in the list of missing children," Agent D said while
looking at Jeanette Thatcher.
"You're telling me that you believe these two are my children?"
Jeanette asked.
Agent D nodded affirmatively.
"I'll never get my two children back will I?" Jeanette asked she gave a
little sob, but kept her voice as calm as she could.
Agent D explained, "Mrs. Thatcher, I'm awfully sorry but we have never
heard of anyone getting one of these boxes to work again once it
closes. A box always quits working almost ninety-six hours after it's
activated. Jeri's timetable matches perfectly. As far as we're
concerned you're two children are here in this room with you."
"If you choose to accept that fact then you may be able to rekindle the
relationship you once had with them in a slightly altered form. I know
of one family where the husband became the daughter, the wife the
husband, the son the mother, the daughter the son or something like
that. They seem to be happy although the son is pregnant and having to
adjust to that situation," Agent D replied, "It's your choice."
"May I suggest you go visit in Kansas City, take a vacation see the
sights? You can stay in a hotel and keep your schedule flexible," Agent
C supplied. "I think that will also really help you discover these two
are your children."
"I...I think I would like to do that," Jeanette said. She turned to
Lisa and Jeri, "Can I give you a call in a couple of days?"
"How about if we call you?" Lisa stated. "Our schedule is a little
fluid right now and we're not sure when we'll be back home." Lisa did
not want to give a phone number the agents could use to track them.
Jeanette nodded, "Sure. That sounds fine." She wondered if they would
really call her.
On the road back to town and the main highway, Agent C gave a nod to
the black suburban parked beside the road. It was the only
acknowledgement he gave to their backup as he drove him and Agent D
back towards the airport.
"How come I feel like someone's staring me right in the middle of my
back?" Agent C asked D.
"Because someone is. I just haven't figured out who they all are," D
replied.
"What do you think the boss is going to say?" C asked.
"Before or after he has kittens?" D asked.
Agent C looked at him to be sure he was joking.
"First what did you find out about Jeri?" D asked.
"Jeri Kimberly Knight, age nineteen, born July twenty-fifth, nineteen
eighty-four in Topeka, Kansas. Abandoned as a baby, passed around
several homes through child services, graduated at George Washington
High School with a respectable GPA. Driver's license issued by Missouri
based on Kansas license August two thousand three. But this is all
bullshit," C declared emphatically.
"Not entirely. Any photos?" D asked.
"Two- one for her high school graduation web site and one for her
driver's license." C replied.
"So what's he going to say?" C asked again.
D shrugged; he tilted his chair back and closed his eyes. Long nights
on planes had taught him to sleep anywhere. He hated planes though.
"Shall we start with Asia first," C returned.
"The easy stuff huh?" Agent D replied, "He'll go into cardiac arrest.
We have a confirmed foreign sovereignty that had a device and a rogue
within the sovereignty attempting to use the device to create a force
capable of overthrowing the existing regime and destabilizing the area.
In addition, he was actively seeking more devices. We were lucky our
girls showed up."
D continued, "We have evidence that someone else of mid-eastern origin
tried to do the same and attacked a high school in the middle of the
Heartland. Their creatures were not as effective. The attack alone will
keep a lot of people up all night tonight and for the next month."
"You call that the easy stuff?" C asked.
"Sure, we don't have to deal with it," D replied.
"Okay what's hard?" C asked.
"Or what's going to make the boss piss his pants?" D added.
"Whatever," C replied.
"Lisa," D said just the one name.
"Huh, the tincan?" C asked incredulously.
"Up until now everyone we've met has been an organic creature. They
were basic human. Even Superboy is built on a human model with known
vulnerabilities. Lisa scares the shit out of me." D said.
"So she's a kid in a portable iron lung, what's the big deal?" C
stated.
"The box transformed a person with severe cerebral palsy and
deteriorating conditions into an organism that at a minimum is a cyborg
and could be a fully functional artificially intelligent robot," D
stated. "The being we observed is extremely intelligent, creative,
defensive and self confident. She has very advanced technology and has
developed additional technology to suit her needs. She has access to
the world's computer, network, and banking systems. The box will create
for its user any out of this world technology that the user can
imagine."
"Are you saying she's a threat?" C asked his voice went serious and
cold.
"If I thought that, you and I would not be having this conversation
right now," D answered. "She's shown us that the boxes are a far larger
threat than we've believed or let ourselves believe."
"Care to explain?" C asked.
D opened one eye to look at his partner as if to say 'you're sure?'
then he said, "The boxes can apparently create whatever technology a
person can imagine. Suppose an individual imagined a schoolgirl going
on a tour of the capitol building while congress is in session. She is
carrying in her purse a matter-antimatter bomb disguised and shielded
to appear as a typical makeup compact. Suppose a cell kidnaps and
transforms a group of secretaries from a typing pool for the Pentagon.
They turn the secretaries into something like dogs and take their
places. Each one carries an ultra small thermonuclear device disguised
as a pack of chewing gum-shielded and screened to pass our security
measures. My personal favorite, they transform their self into
something wearing stealth capable shielded battle armor that shoots
matter/antimatter missiles in one hand and a transforming beam in the
other. Then they start at Rockport, Maine and fly at mach three down
the east coast to Miami, Florida. Along the way, they hit every nuclear
reactor, fuel bunker and shipping port. Anything that comes along gets
hit with the morph ray and becomes oh a pig, a horse, an elephant or
anything else that can't fly five hundred feet off the ground."
"Should I go faster?" Agent C asked.
"No kid. We'll either be too late or get there in plenty of time.
However, we do need to get there. Take it easy. Wake me before we get
to the airfield." D replied.
"Boy D you sure know how to give somebody nightmares. That'll keep
anyone awake thinking about those scenarios," C shot back.
"Well I didn't want you falling asleep at the wheel after thirty-six
hours without sleep. Besides, think about ways to block those things
from happening. Also we need to find out what Lisa can do. They
referred to something called a bolo. I don't think they meant an
aboriginal throwing weapon. This shell thing and bolo is probably some
Starwars type thing." D replied.
"Right D. Go ahead and get some rest we should be at the field in an
hour," C replied.
