One of an occasional essays that I write when bidden by E. I had been
complaining about my look and was asked to write a thousand words about
the details of my look. She asked me if I felt uncomfortable with my
look, or embarrassed, and to write 1000 words about it. I don't know if
this is a prelude to changing my look (hope so) or if E is looking to
"rub my nose in it" a bit. With her it is hard to tell sometimes. Maybe
that's the attraction for me, because I do enjoy the submission and love
what I have been becoming. I also feel great comfort in being - for lack
of a better word - "owned" by E.

My dress isn't what anyone would call simple, although many would call
it cute. But it isn't cute in a flirty or fun way. Not at all. It is a
modest dress. So it is a modest dress, but not a simple one. My dress is
just below the knee in length, and has a full skirt, gathered at the
raised waist, which sits somewhat above my natural waist, just below my
ribcage, not quite below my breasts. The top is a bit more complicated.
The dress zips up the back to the nape of my neck. Emerging from the
bodice are two white sleeves, so even though it is a one piece dress, it
looks as if it is a sleeveless jumper with a white blouse worn below it.
The front of the bodice is white also, and there is no collar, although
the cut of the neckline is high. Over this blouse, connected at the
shoulders, is a crochet vest with pearl buttons. The buttons are
decorative, just for show, and the vest is connected to the dress at the
sides and the shoulders. From the sides of the dress, at the waist, are
two ribbon ties, which are meant to be tied in a bow at the small of the
back.
The fabric of the blouse is a rayon blend, soft to the touch, but with
some structure. This contrasts with the crochet vest and the relaxed,
soft, thin rayon fabric of the dress. The dress itself is a broad, pink
and white check pattern, with flowers interspersed. It is a very
feminine print. The pink crochet vest matches the pink check of the
vest.
So as you can imagine, my dress isn't a simple dress, but it is a modest
dress, and it is a very feminine dress. Below my dress, I am wearing a
thin silk slip with ruffles at the bodice and a wide double ruffle at
the hem. Below that, a bra, which has been slightly padded out to make
up for my small breasts and give them some shape. Down below, I'm in
sheer control top pantyhose over a high waisted control panty. Around my
waist, I wear a sort of cincher, which together with the restrictive
pantyhose and panties helps me to maintain a feminine shape. I'm
wearing navy blue leather ballet flats, with little bows on the instep.
My face is lightly made up - I do use some make-up in order to project a
more neutral, natural appearance. I am not trying to be fancy, just
tasteful. I bring out my eyes a bit, and put a bit of color on my lips.
Likewise, my nails are well maintained, perfectly shaped and polished
clear. My jewelry is also tasteful - it isn't garish or overdone. I'm
not wearing a necklace, and my earrings are small - two gold rings in
one ear and one in the other. My nose stud is very small - you might
need to look twice to catch it. Likewise, I've brushed my shoulder
length hair back except for a row of bangs in front.
I feel very comfortable dressed this way. The dress and slip are very
light, and aside from a bit of tightness at the raised waist, they
hardly register at all, except when the wind blows or when I walk
quickly. I scarcely think about my underwear at all, and my make-up and
jewelry are easy to maintain. Still, my hair is always a source of
fuss, just like any woman's hair. I frequently need to adjust it during
the course of the day. Sometimes, when really busy, I just put it up so
I don't need to keep dealing with it.
So do you have a picture of me now in my pretty gingham dress? Well, you
can be pretty sure that the picture will be pretty similar tomorrow.
You might say I love wearing modest gingham dresses. Or you might say
that someone prefers me dressed this way. You see, gingham's about the
only thing I have in my closet these days. I have another dress exactly
like the one I'm wearing, except that it has a light green color scheme.
I try not to wear it the day before or after the pink dress I'm wearing
today, but everyone knows to expect me in something like this.
For example, in addition to the dress I'm wearing now and its twin, I
have a yellow gingham dress with the print at a very small scale. From
far away, it doesn't look plaid at all. This dress is uniform in color,
but like the other, it has a high waist, a modest, unadorned neckline, a
false vest with two ribbon ties that make a bow in the small of the
back, but the vest has broad lapels which continue up over the shoulders
of the dress, sort of like a sailor collar. The lapels are rounded and
have been embellished with soutache stitching and silk rosettes. Still,
the dress is soft and comfortable. I have others that are similar.
I have another dress which also is one piece disguised as two, but this
one is different - it is still gingham - navy blue - doesn't have a
vest. The top is a sort of cape or back-buttoning over-blouse that is
trimmed with white crochet daisy trim around the bottom. It has
slightly puffed sleeves and a modest neckline with no collar. Below
this over-blouse, and attached, is a skirt that goes just below the
knees. The skirt goes right up to below the bustline, so that there is
no break in the continuity of the plaid pattern, but above the skirt
there is a silk acetate bodice, so that if one were to put one's hands
up underneath the attached back buttoned over-blouse, one would touch
this silky fabric. It is challenging to put on this dress because it is
zipped up the back to the center of the shoulders, and also has the
attached back-buttoned over-blouse.
It's really easy to find dresses like this - just go to Etsy or Ebay and
look for 80's gingham dress or 90's plaid dress. There seems to be an
endless supply of them. I'm not sure this is a good thing, because while
I don't mind the way the dresses feel on my body, there are certain
characteristics which I find tiresome. I wish they didn't all button or
zip in the back, and I miss having functional pockets. It would be nice
if there were some that didn't have a high waist, or were sleeveless, or
cut a bit lower in front.
And then there's the the feeling that comes from being conspicuous in
the public eye, because I can't help but feel like people see me and
they say to themselves "oh - here comes the gingham girl" because they
know how I am always dressed in the most feminine, girly plaid dresses.
"It's your look, and you've got to own it," says E. So I dress this way
without complaint, but secretly, I think to myself that I don't really
own the look. It's more that the look owns me.
