Great and Holy Friday, April 16, 1982, McKinley, Ohio

As Angie and I stood quietly waiting for the Lamentations service to begin late on Friday, I thought about the series of services which had brought us here - Bridegroom Matins on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday evenings; Holy Unction on Wednesday evening; a Vesperal Divine Liturgy on Thursday morning celebrating the Last Supper, the Twelve Gospels service Thursday evening, celebrating the passion; the Royal Hours kept all day Friday; and finally, the Vespers of Great and Holy Friday on Friday evening. All of which led up to the service which was about to start - Lamentations, celebrating the taking down of Jesus from the cross, and his burial in the tomb owned by Joseph of Arimathea.

This was, without question, my absolute favorite service of the Church year - at once mournful and hopeful. The service began as a regular Royal Matins service, which contained my favorite hymn of the year - the Third Stasis of Lamentations. It was, in my mind, the perfect hymn, rivaled only by Let My Prayer Arise, which we sang during the Presanctified Liturgy on Wednesdays during Lent.

The hymn began mournfully...

Priest: All generations
Offer adoration
To Thy burial O Christ.

Choir: Joseph of Arimathea
Took Thee down from the tree
And laid Thee in a grave.

but ended with great expectation...

The myrrh-bearing women
Came very early in the morning
And sprinkled myrrh upon the tomb.

As the priest sprinkled rose water on the congregation. At the completion of that hymn, there were additional prayers and hymns before Father Nicholas led the congregation as we carried the ‘tomb’, containing the Epitaphion, a cloth icon representing the burial of Christ, around the outside of the church three times. The service concluded with the Great Doxology, followed by lessons from the Old and New Testament, and a Gospel reading describing the request of the Roman soldiers to guard Christ’s tomb.

Authors note:

If you wish to hear (and see) the Third Stasis, the following YouTube links are good examples:

At the end of the service, Angie and I walked quietly out to the car.

“I was so moved by that service,” Angie said quietly. “I’ve never seen anything like it. The Good Friday service in the Roman Catholic Church doesn’t even come close.”

“So you see why it’s my favorite service of the entire year?”

“Absolutely. It was different being in church all day, with the services every few hours. There’s a liturgy tomorrow morning right?”

“Yes. It’s interesting, because you’ll hear resurrectional hymns on Saturday morning. That’s due to the fact we do everything ‘by anticipation’ - one half-cycle early. So this would have been the Vesperal Divine Liturgy on Saturday evening, with the Paschal service occurring on Sunday morning. Now, Pascha is tomorrow night at 11:00pm, though we don’t sing the Paschal Troparia until after midnight.”

“What was that bit about college students not needing to bring a Pascha basket?”

“Done properly, a Pascha basket has a variety of traditional foods, some of which need to be cooked, not to mention a bottle of wine, and some other delicacies. I have a basket with a proper cloth to cover it that my mom made for me, but we’ll just put some basic things in there - mostly treats. You know I’m not a huge candy eater, but I don’t eat candy during Great Lent, so there will be some Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups in there, plus some Snickers bars. I bought some of your favorite candy, plus some of those Dolly Madison Snack Cakes you like. If I had a kitchen with a proper refrigerator and stove, I’d actually make as much as I could.”

“And this party goes all night?”

“Yes. The Paschal service will end around 2:30am, and then we’ll party until morning. Some people will actually stay at church for the Agape Vespers service at 11:00am, but others will go home for a nap. I’ve done both, so I’ll leave it up to you.”

“I think a nap is probably in order.”

“Then that is what we’ll do!”

Pascha, April 18, 1982, McKinley, Ohio

“I am thoroughly beat!” Angie said when we returned to campus following Agape Vespers.

We’d stayed at church until nearly 6:00am before returning to campus to nap until 10:00am, when we’d both showered and then headed back to church for the final service of the week. We’d been in church something like thirty-two hours during Holy Week and Pascha, and while it was exhilarating, it was also exhausting.

“I’m going to nap, and go to bed early tonight,” I said. “Let’s say our evening prayers right after dinner.”

“Deal!” Angie said.

She went to her room and I went to mine, set my alarm, and simply collapsed on the bed. I awoke about two hours later, and after a shower, grabbed a Coke from my fridge and put on some music.

“Hey, Stranger!” Melody laughed as she came into the room.

“You were welcome to come to church with us any time this week!”

“Let’s just say that’s going to have to be a point of negotiation if it goes that far!”

“There’s only a very small core of people who make every service. I don’t think I’ve missed one since I was born.”

“Your parents are as fanatical as you are?” Melody said lightheartedly.

“My mom is, but Dad doesn’t object or complain. My sister, on the other hand...”

“What’s the plan for today?”

“Just relaxing for another few hours, then dinner, then prayers with Angie, then an early bedtime. Even with two naps, I’m still beat.”

“Up for a visitor later?” Melody smirked.

“I’m pretty much always ‘up’ for you,” I said, returning her smirk.

“I like it when you can be a bit risqué. I know it’s not your usual style.”

I chuckled, “You should be happy I don’t follow the strictest Lenten rule - complete abstinence.”

“No way!”

“It’s in the books, so to speak, but I’ve yet to meet a priest who believes it’s appropriate for any married couple. The fear is that by abstaining, you’ll fall into temptation. I’m sure there are some couples somewhere with the discipline to do that, but that’s not something I intend to follow.”

“Good! Otherwise we’d have a serious problem!”

April 23, 1982, Circleville, Ohio

The week had gone by quickly, and I’d made up the work I’d missed on Thursday and Friday of the previous week without any difficulty. The semester was quickly winding down, and there was just over a month before Summer break. I hadn’t had a lot of time to think about the situation with Katy, and as I headed towards Circleville, I wasn’t sure how I should handle things with her. If I let things progress naturally, we’d certainly end up sleeping together, and I was reasonably sure that would be a commitment to an exclusive relationship, if not more. And that wasn’t something for which I was prepared.

“Hi, Mike!” Katy gushed when she greeted me at the door.

We exchanged a soft kiss, then went into the house so I could say ‘hello’ to her parents before Katy and I went out to dinner. I felt somewhat relieved when it was mentioned that they were going to be home when we returned, which meant there was a limit to what could happen between me and Katy.

“Where are we going tonight?” I asked when we walked out to the car.

“Steaks! We haven’t had one in nine weeks!”

Katy gave me directions and I drove to a restaurant named Steak and Ale. We had to wait about ten minutes before we were seated. We ordered soft drinks, and by the time the waiter brought those back to the table, we were ready to place our food order.

“I’m sorry about my parents being home. I thought they were going out, but they decided to stay in this weekend because last weekend was so busy with church.”

“It’s OK,” I said.

“We could go to Salmon P. Chase Park, if you wanted.”

“What’s there?”

“The local make-out spot!” Katy laughed.

“My car isn’t exactly suited for that, in case you hadn’t noticed! And it’s already in the low 50s, so it’s a bit chilly to sit outside.”

“We should have taken Dad’s Mercedes. It’s got plenty of room!” she said, then sighed, “I suppose we can cuddle and kiss on the sofa in my room.”

“Don’t sound like it’s such torture!” I said with a silly grin to show I was teasing.

Katy dropped her voice to a whisper, “I’ve been thinking about your lips and tongue ‘down there’ for weeks! It’s driving me nuts!”

“I certainly enjoyed doing that!” I said in a low voice.

“And what I did?” she asked with a smirk and an arched eyebrow.

“Very much so.”

The waiter brought our salads, interrupting the conversation, and we started eating. I wanted to broach the subject that had been on my mind, but wasn’t sure how to do it. I didn’t want to upset Katy, but the last thing I wanted to do was be in a position where I had to try to decide what to do at the last moment, as it were.

“Katy,” I said carefully when I finished my salad. “We should probably talk about where this is leading.”

“You mean, like us as a couple? Or...”

“Or...” I replied. “Which definitely has implications for being a couple.”

“Because you aren’t ready to make what you think would be a long-term commitment to anyone?”

“I think that’s the main reason. One thing I’ve figured out in the past few weeks is I don’t know myself well enough to make that kind of decision. And you’re still in High School.”

Katy frowned, so I quickly continued.

“I don’t mean that in the sense I think you’re too young for me - we’re only two years apart. But you can’t really think about a long-term commitment until you graduate and decide on college. I mean, I suppose you could, but I don’t think it would be wise.”

Katy nodded thoughtfully, “I think that’s true. Can I be totally honest with you? You won’t freak out?”

“I promise not to freak out.”

Our meals arrived and we began eating before she continued.

“Sometimes I daydream about what it would be like to be married. It used to be this imaginary guy who kind of looked like Shaun Cassidy. But lately, he’s looked like you.”

“That doesn’t surprise me,” I said. “And it doesn’t freak me out.”

“And if I told you I saw us with four kids!” she said, laughing softly.

“I want kids, for sure, but I am NOT ready to even contemplate actually having them!”

“I also daydream about MAKING them,” Katy whispered. “Well, practicing, anyway.”

“I hope I’m good at it in your daydream!”

Katy laughed, “Yes, of course, you silly boy! Well, as much as I can imagine what it would be like. But after what we did, I have an idea! Can I ask another question?”

“You don’t have to ask if you can ask!”

“Do you think about doing it with me?”

I nodded, “Yes.”

“And you think if we do it together I’ll expect you to marry me?”

“Maybe. I dated a girl like that in High School. I think you certainly would expect me to only go out with you and not see any other girls.”

“You’re worried about Angie?”

“Some girls might be jealous of her because she’s my friend, but she’s only a friend. A close one, but only a friend.”

“It sure seems like she wants to be your girlfriend.”

“She’s told me, several times, she’s not interested in any kind of romantic relationship.”

“Does she have a boyfriend?”

“No. She hangs out with our group most of the time, and she and I do our morning and evening prayers together.”

“That’s a bit strange; it’s almost like a married couple.”

“You aren’t the first one to say that, but there is nothing romantic going on there. I asked her out a few times when I first met her, but I’m firmly in the ‘friend’ camp. It’s Melody that would be the main concern.”

“And you don’t want to stop seeing her?”

“See, I don’t KNOW what I want at this point. That’s why I’m confused and why I wanted to talk about us before we did something that could make a complete mess of things.”

“So, like if it was just, you know, doing it, it would be OK? But if I said, like, ‘I love you’, then it wouldn’t?”

“As weird as that sounds, that more or less explains my mindset. But it’s not only what I think or want, it’s what you think and want. And if we aren’t on the same page, it’ll end up in a total mess.”

“Because you think I might be upset afterwards?”

“I don’t know,” I sighed. “See, it kind of depends on what you think. You know, do you want to be a virgin on your wedding night? Or is it OK so long as the guy you do it with is the one you marry? Or is pre-marital sex OK without a plan to get engaged and married. Those can be tough questions. Heck, I’ve asked them of myself!”

“But you did it already with someone, right?”

“Yes. But I also didn’t do it with someone because they had that view that it was OK so long as you got married at some point. And I couldn’t make that commitment.”

“Because you were in High School?”

“No. Because she refused to ever go to church, and you know my take on that. I think we talked about her, sort of.”

“You did say something about that girl during your Senior year,” Katy said. “I guess I see your point. And it’s not like you can take it back or get a do-over.”

“Exactly. And, one other thing; we’d need to talk about birth control, too.”

“Why does this have to be so complicated?” she sighed. “It’s like my body says one thing, my heart says another thing, and my mind says a third thing. And they’re all arguing with each other.”

“Which is a good reason not to do it, don’t you think?”

“I guess. But if I decided to, you would?”

“If we both agreed on what it would mean, probably, yes.”

“I want to think about it some more.”

I nodded, “I think that’s a good thing.”

April 24, 1982, McKinley, Ohio

“How was church last weekend?” Nancy asked when I walked into the Quick Mart on Saturday morning.

“Awesome,” I said.

“And home?”

“Good. I got to spend a lot of time with my friends Dale and Jocelyn, which made me happy, Unfortunately, Dale is going to stay in Madison over the Summer so I won’t get to see him. How were things here the past couple of weeks?”

“Quiet for Spring Break, and last Saturday wasn’t too busy - just the regular flow of customers who aren’t students. Kind of typical. Are you still planning to work in the Fall?”

“If I get one of the three grants I’m a finalist for, probably not. I’ll know in the next two weeks, and then I’ll let Mr. Sokolov know.”

“Would you like to come to dinner one night before Summer Break? I’d like to have you over and Mom would love to see you again.”

I wondered if she was thinking about trying to restart our romantic relationship. If she was, I didn’t think it would be a good idea. We’d tried twice and failed both times. And I already had enough issues in that arena. But she’d mentioned her mom, and it sounded like it was an invitation for a friend.

“Sure. Did you have a suggested night?”

“Pretty much any night would work. A week from today? You usually hang out with your friends on Saturday, right? You don’t have a date?”

“Right. That should be fine. How is your mom doing?”

“She’s fine.”

“How is school going for you?”

“All A’s right now; I think I can hold that. Of course, I’m already accepted to Taft, so it’s not as important as it was before. I’d have to flunk all my classes to lose my place.”

“True,” I replied. “I need to get my smock and get to work!”

I went about my usual routine, stocking the shelves, checking the paperwork, and refilling the coolers as they were emptied by the steady stream of customers, who were mostly McKinley students. When my shift finished, Nancy and I agreed I’d be at their house at 6:00pm the following Saturday to have dinner with her and her mom.

I headed back to campus for a quick bite to eat, and then Angie and I went to karate class. I was making slow progress, as was Angie, but I was less worried about achieving my next belt than I was the exercise and self-discipline. Angie and I were still running every weekday morning, but that only really exercised our legs, whereas karate involved arms, legs, and torso.

“What’s the plan for this evening?” I asked Jason after I’d had my post-karate shower.

“Are you and Angie going to church?”

“No. We agreed we’d take tonight off. We’ll go in the morning.”

“OK. There’s nothing good at the movies, at least according to Jeannette. We were thinking bowling. Or we could hit an off-campus party. I know that’s not your thing, but this is a relatively tame one. Some professor’s daughter is having an early ‘May Day’ party.”

“Mayday?” I said, teasing, but sounding serious. “Like a call for help?”

“No,” he laughed, “May Day, like the first day in May. It’s some socialist holiday like Labor Day.”

“I know,” I grinned. “It’s a huge Communist thing in Russia. Do you know who’s hosting the party?”

“I think it’s the daughter of the professor who teaches you guitar.”

“Milena? She’s pretty cool, so I can’t imagine it’ll be out of control. Is that what everyone wants to do?”

“We haven’t asked. If you and Angie don’t want to go, we’ll go bowling.”

“I’m cool with it,” I replied. “Have one of the girls check with Angie. I have a bit of homework to do, but I’ll be done by 5:00pm.”

Stupid Boy Freshman Year Part IIChapter 10 Baseball Tryouts

First thing, I went looking for Tracy. She didn't see me come up behind her. I figured a little payback was in order so I gave her a hip check. Her head snapped around, and when she saw it was me, she got a big grin. "Hey, sexy boy," she purred. That got everyone's attention, and I actually blushed. She winked at me as she turned to go to her locker. It was nice to see her smiling. After school, I went to baseball tryouts. There were a lot of guys and even a few girls trying out. I...

October 22, 1981, McKinley, Ohio “Angie? What are you doing here?!” I asked when she sat down next to me in the lab. She smiled, “I talked to Doctor Stanton and asked if I could be your biology lab partner because they were going to move Sally. She’s with my old team which was two girls and one guy. Now I have morning lab instead of afternoon.” “Uh, doesn’t this just create a new problem?” Mark asked warily. Angie shook her head, “No. Mike and I are friends, but that’s it. We study...

Good Medicine Freshman YearChapter 41 A Good Sense of Humor

October 17, 1981, McKinley, Ohio There was a knock at the door just before 6:00pm and I was sure it was the girls so I called out for them to come in. As expected, it was Jeannette and Marie. “Ready for hot meat between buns and slurping creamy white liquid?” Jeannette teased. “My bedroom is right there!” I grinned. “Should we leave you two the room?” Marie smirked. “Dinner first, then dessert!” Jeannette laughed. I took Angie’s hand and the four of us left the dorm and headed for the...

June 8, 1981, West Monroe and Rutherford, Ohio “This entire conversation is going to be ‘too much information’, isn’t it?” I said when Liz and I left the house on Monday evening. “Probably. Is there anything you don’t want to hear?” “Anything at all about my little sister’s sex life!” I laughed. “But I guess you want to talk.” “‘Cause you won’t judge me, Mikey. You’ll listen and give me good advice.” I pulled out of the driveway and headed towards Rutherford. The Rutherford Free Clinic...

Good Medicine Freshman YearChapter 29 Fear and Doubting

September 14, 1981, McKinley, Ohio On Monday, after lunch, I did as Doctor Orosco had insisted, and met with a counselor from Student Health Services, who, amazingly, was available immediately. The problem was, as I’d argued, that I wasn’t going to repeat what I said, even to another counselor, under any circumstances. I spent ten minutes going around in circles with Doctor Ralph Hart, and made no progress. “I’m not sure what you’re doing here, if you won’t talk to me about what...

I didn’t spend any time on it yesterday.” “Come on in. She’s in her room.” “Thanks.” I walked back through the house to Nancy’s room. She got up to greet me and we exchanged a hug and kiss. “Sorry for putting you off at work,” I said. “But I didn’t want to be interrupted.” “It’s OK. How is Jocelyn?” “I found...

March 27, 1982, McKinley, Ohio I was still thinking about Katy as I walked to the Quick Mart for my weekly shift on Saturday morning. There was no doubt in my mind that sooner, rather than later, Katy was going to ask me to ‘go all the way’ and I’d have a very big decision to make. I stretched and yawned and sat up. “Are you doing OK?” Nancy asked. “Much better after last night. That was just what I needed. Thanks.” “I think I’m calling Ripley’s,” Mrs. Landers laughed, coming into the room. “Teenage boy shows up and asks to spend the night with teenage girl. She agrees and gets permission from her mom. Boy desires only...

Good Medicine Freshman YearChapter 55 The Holiday Season

December 21, 1981, West Monroe, Ohio “Mikey!” Liz squealed when I walked into the house on Monday evening. “Hi, Lizzy!” I said. She ran to me and we hugged lightly, then went into the living room where she had been sitting with my parents. “Welcome home, Mike,” Dad said. “How is Jocelyn?” “Pretty good. She has most of her range of motion back and they’re working to see if they can get her some more. Her bones have knit well, and she’s able to move around more freely.” “That’s good to...

Good Medicine Freshman YearChapter 27 After Effects

September 7, 1981, West Monroe, Ohio When I stopped home just before 8:00pm on my way back to McKinley, I found my dad alone, in the living room, sitting in his easy chair, drinking Scotch on the rocks. “Hi, Dad. Where’s Mom?” “Sleeping. She’s completely worn out by last night and today. I’m surprised you’re not.” “I’ll crash when I get back to my dorm. How did it go?” He held up his glass, “Third one. How do you think?” I slumped down onto the couch. “Not good,” I sighed. He took a...

Good Medicine Freshman YearChapter 61 Fathers Sons and Daughters

February 14, 1982, West Monroe, Ohio “How are things going, Mike?” Dad asked when I sat down on the stool in the corner of his workshop. “Good, now that all that stuff with Family Services is done. How have things been at home?” “Your mom and sister put on brave faces, but Liz is struggling.” “They both said her schoolwork was good and she seemed OK when I talked to her.” “She has good days and bad days. Doctor Newton says she’s struggling with her feelings for Paul.” “Paul?...

Good Medicine Freshman YearChapter 68 Melody Explains It All

March 23, 1982, McKinley, Ohio I had been extremely distracted during my drive from Circleville to McKinley, and was having real trouble concentrating on my review for O-Chem, and the guys noticed. “What’s bugging you?” Jason asked. “You seem like you’re on another planet.” “I know,” I agreed. “I’m having real trouble concentrating.” “That must have been a hell of a concert!” Pete laughed. “Of course, seeing my girlfriend wrap her lips around a saxophone might distract me, too!” “You’re...

Good Medicine Freshman YearChapter 73 Winding Down and Heating Up

April 30, 1982, Circleville, Ohio “Mom and Dad are out tonight,” Katy said. “Let’s cook together!” “Sure. What did you have in mind?” “Well, now that you have no restrictions because we don’t fast during the Paschal period, I was thinking two small filets, small lobster tails, and broccoli. Surf and turf, I guess.” “That sounds awesome!” I said, then smirked, “What about dessert?” Katy laughed softly, “I have some ideas!” “I bet!” I chuckled. “But we need to make sure we’re on the same...

October 12, 1981, McKinley, Ohio “Well THAT stinks,” Nancy said on Tuesday afternoon. “What happens now?” “I don’t know yet. I talked to Doctor Norris this morning after my chem mid-term and he’s confident nothing will happen. The problem is, I’m sure I’ve made an enemy of the Dean, and any minor slip-up on my part is going to become a Federal case.” “But why you?” “I had the misfortune to draw someone who felt she could use the discrimination procedure to get something she couldn’t...

Good Medicine Freshman YearChapter 46 Tears For Fears

November 8, 1981, McKinley, Ohio “Do you want me to disappear?” Angie asked as we walked into the dorm after church. “Why? Emmy knows I’m dating you. She’s not jealous. You know she’s coming to visit and she knows you know. It would be REALLY dumb to invite her here otherwise, don’t you think?” “Guys have been known to do dumb things from time to time!” “Not ones who want you to stick around.” “You do remember I told you my High School boyfriend screwed a close friend of mine behind my...

November 2, 1981, West Monroe, Ohio “I did not come here for a lecture,” I said firmly. “I did what I felt was in Liz’s best interest. Again. Dad said we needed to talk, and I’m willing to talk. I am NOT willing to listen to a lecture.” “You do not decide what is best for your sister,” Mom said. “That is for your father and me, as well as the professionals.” “And what is Dad’s opinion on this?” I asked. “That is not the point, Mike!” I sighed. We’d been going around in circles on the...

Good Medicine Freshman YearChapter 66 Second Base and a First Kiss

March 5, 1982, Circleville, Ohio “What became of that police investigation?” Mrs. Malenkov asked when I arrived at Katy’s house on Friday evening. “Nothing so far. They haven’t caught the rapist. The school added some security and started a service to walk girls to and from class or work after dark.” “Why did they check on you, specifically?” “The suspect has brown hair and is about 5’10” and I came into the dorm maybe an hour after it happened. At first they had reports it was a black...

Thank you!” I hugged her tightly to me. “Mom let you out of ‘house arrest’?” “Yes. And I know you’re responsible. If you weren’t my brother, I’d kiss you!” “Just remember, you have to behave, because if you don’t...” “I know,” she sighed. “I’m on parole. November 23, 1981, West Monroe, Ohio On Monday morning, just after breakfast there was a knock at the door. I got up from the couch and went to open it. “Phil?” “Hi, Mike. Can we come in?” “We?” “This is Mrs. Laramy from Family Services.” “Hang on a second.” I went to the kitchen to get my dad, who followed me back to the foyer. “Hi, Phil,” Dad said. “What’s up?” “This is Mrs. Laramy from Family Services.” “Mr. Loucks? Good Medicine Freshman YearChapter 6 Juggling Act

May 31, 1981, West Monroe, Ohio On Sunday morning as I dressed for church, I faced the true reality of what happened the previous night. My make-out sessions with April had, except on that single instance where I’d fondled her sweater-clad breast for more than a second or two, not gone far enough to be included in my confession. What had happened the previous night certainly had. I now faced effectively the same dilemma I would have faced had April and I gone to the motel after Prom. I...

Good Medicine Freshman YearChapter 19 Several Dates

August 21, 1981, West Monroe, Ohio On Friday morning, Mr. Mills called just after 6:00am to let me know that Jocelyn had gone into surgery, and that it would likely be mid-afternoon before he had any news. I thanked him and sat down at the table in the kitchen with a mug of tea I made and read the Rutherford Tribune. Nobody else was up, and I enjoyed the quiet for about an hour before my parents came into the kitchen. “Was that Jocelyn’s dad who called at 6:00am?” my dad asked. “Yes. I...

February 13, 1982, McKinley, Ohio “I visited Ohio State yesterday,” Nancy said when we had a chance to chat on Saturday morning. “And?” “I’m pretty sure I’m going to Taft like we talked about because I can live at home. But the tour was cool and our tour guides were absolutely hysterical.” “Oh?” “Yeah. A guy and his fiancée. He’s a criminal justice major and wants to be a US Marshal. April 4, 1982, West Monroe, Ohio “Mishka!” Tasha squealed, hugging me tightly, but quickly releasing me because we were in the narthex of the church. “Hi, Tasha!” I said with a smile. She grabbed my hand and led me to the church hall where we got some food and coffee, then sat down by her parents. “Michael, how is school going?” Deacon Vasily asked. “All A’s so far, and I should finish the semester with a 4.0 average.” “Very good. And you’re attending church regularly?” “Yes. Every...

June 6, 1981, West Monroe, Ohio After Vespers on Saturday, I spent a few minutes talking to Tasha. “My dad isn’t sure karate is ‘ladylike’,” she said. “The uniforms cover more than those nice dresses you wear during the Summer!” “You noticed, Mike?” she asked with a soft laugh. “If I may be «некультурный», yes, of course! It’s difficult to miss a pretty girl with a nice body!” “Thank you! But do NOT say that around my dad! He’ll never let you see me again!” “So the answer is ‘no’?” “I...

Good Medicine Freshman YearChapter 38 Twelve Times

October 10, 1981, West Monroe, Ohio I froze and realized my first inclination to go back to McKinley had been the right one. I’d thought my talk with Becky the previous weekend had resolved the issue, but I was very clearly mistaken. I could actually go back. It was early enough, and I hadn’t told Tasha I was going to be home, so she wouldn’t be upset, and a phone call would make her very happy as the two I’d made so far had done. But there was one problem - all I could hear in my head was...

October 11, 1981, West Monroe, Ohio On Sunday morning, Becky and I got out of bed and snuck across the hall to the bathroom, where we got into the shower together. “Thank you,” she said as I lathered shampoo in her hair. “I was afraid you’d say ‘no’ and I’d have missed that.” “You’re OK?” I asked. “Mike, it’s what I wanted from the day I met you. November 9, 1981, McKinley, Ohio “OK?” I asked, shocked enough that I was rocked back in my seat. “Yes. OK.” “OK to WHAT?” I asked warily. “Getting married.” “You can’t be serious! You’re afraid of French kissing and you want to get married?” Angie smirked, “Gotcha! You should see the look on your face!” “Nice.” I laughed. “You did get me!” “Sorry, I figured at that point I needed to do something to change the mood.” “By making my heart stop?!” “Oh, come on! Good Medicine Freshman YearChapter 56 Now I Understand

January 4, 1982, McKinley, Ohio “And so another semester begins,” I said when I met Angie at the elevators on Monday morning. “I saw your class schedule was basically the same.” “The only real change is I have the creative writing core requirement replacing the scientific writing class. I am so glad I chose to take those in the order I did - it made all the difference in the world for doing the lab reports.” “I’m not complaining! I ended up with an A in biology which I NEVER would have...

Good Medicine Freshman YearChapter 57 Sorting Things Out

January 12, 1982, McKinley, Ohio Influenza was making the rounds of the dorm, and just about everyone had it by Tuesday morning, including me. I dragged myself out of bed, realized there was no way I was going to run, and climbed back into bed. I took some decongestant tablets from the box on the shelf next to my bed and swallowed them with a gulp of water. I hoped to fight the worst symptoms and be able to make it to lab. Angie had already said she wasn’t going to run, so I stayed in bed...

I had no clue what she could possibly want, but I appreciated Doctor Stanton coming with me. We made our way to the administration building. “I’m here to see Dean Parker,” I said. “I’m Mike Loucks.” “One moment,” the young woman at the desk...

January 31, 1982, McKinley, Ohio “You’re STILL struggling with that issue?” Jocelyn asked during our regular Sunday afternoon call. “Does it really surprise you?” “No, I suppose it doesn’t. I think the circumstances of the last year really caused you some serious heartache and anguish, and I’m not just talking about you and me. Good Medicine Freshman YearChapter 30 Rocks and Shoals

September 19, 1981, West Monroe, Ohio “Why are you sending me such mixed signals?” “Mixed signals?” Jocelyn and I were sitting on the couch, and she was cuddled next to me, at least as best she could, given her obvious discomfort from the injuries, catheter, and physical therapy. I had thought a lot after my talks with Doctor Hart, as well as my talks with Nancy. One thing I was seriously concerned about was getting more deeply involved with Nancy and messing things up with Jocelyn. I...

I talked to a couple of guys in other dorms who will organize theirs. I figured we couldn’t take care of everyone without some help.” “Cool,” Clark said. “Did anyone hear any more about the investigation?” “The Times said the police didn’t have any suspects, but were following leads,” Jeannette said. “What...

Good Medicine Freshman YearChapter 15 Back to Normal

August 7, 1981, West Monroe, Ohio The Summer was rapidly disappearing and there were but two weeks before I moved to McKinley. Once my dad had calmed down, the Summer had returned to normal. It was almost as if everything was in a holding pattern, where each week had followed a simple pattern. I worked at the hardware store, went to the dojo, had dinner with Tasha on Wednesday, a date with Emmy on Friday, and the usual triple date on Saturday. Liz was still grounded, but Emmy was allowed to...

September 1, 1981, McKinley, Ohio Tuesday wasn’t quite as crazy as Monday. My first class after breakfast was the biology seminar. After the first day, this would be run by Laura Peters, a graduate student. I immediately decided the seminar would be valuable, as she would provide study guides, sample lab reports, and a host of other useful information, as well as address any challenges we encountered in our first semester at Taft. The most important thing is that there would be no outside...

May 30, 1981, West Monroe, Ohio It was with more than a little trepidation that I drove home from karate class. I didn’t really want to talk to April, but I knew I had to. The bottom line was church. It didn’t matter to a lot of people, but it mattered to me. I feared that my conversation with April was simply going to go around in circles, and end with her crying again. Unfortunately, I didn’t see how that could be avoided. “You should go see her,” Mom said when I came downstairs after my...

June 15, 1981, West Monroe, Ohio “Negative,” Liz whispered happily when I came home from work on Monday. “Thank God,” I said. We both had been on pins and needles since the previous Monday, and the news had come as a relief.
