The sunlight pierced gaps in the drapes adorning the windows in the game room where Tim Murphy had fallen asleep the night before. His eyes opened, and it took him a few seconds to remember he was not in his bedroom and still a few more before recalling where he was currently. Memories flashed of some of the hi-jinks from the night before, celebrating the win over Judson on the football field.

Tim felt drool from his chin and noticed the small puddle that accumulated on the ample futon padding he was laying atop on the floor. While wiping away the evidence from the futon cushion, Tim slowly noticed several other bodies strewn about the room in various uncomfortable poses.

“Listen, I vote to let Tim here have the futon to sleep on. He deserves at least that much for how he’s been playing since he made varsity!” He smiled, remembering several conversations between friends from the night before.

“Well, no, I didn’t hit on him as soon as I saw him. I’m not a slut like you! I at least waited until he finished his burger.” Tim giggled as an argument between two cute girls surfaced in his thoughts. They had introduced themselves to him sometime during the night, but neither one was worth remembering.

Tim eventually circled back to the sleeping arrangement debate among several people staying overnight. “So what! He’s a big, strong, tough guy! Let him sleep on the floor and give the padding to us girls,” a junior and member of the girl’s dance team, backed by a few of her teammates, stated her position in the debate.

“If you want it,” Tim announced with a mischievous smile. He then pulled the pad off the chair’s bamboo base and plopped down onto it, patting the unused portion of the futon pad and daring several of the girls. “Come and get it.” The laughs from the others in the room took all tenseness out of everyone’s words. The girl, turned deep red from embarrassment and simply giggled along with the other dance team members still there, and they found a few small pillows for their heads to share. There was no hanky-panky between the sexes in the game room where Tim savored a few hours of rest before the morning sun did its duty.

Tim wasn’t the only person to stir. “We’ve got breakfast in the kitchen for anyone who needs something to eat,” Troy Williams, the star quarterback and host for the evening, said from the doorway of the game room to the ‘rising dead,’ breaking Tim’s thoughts.

Tim stood up, stretched out a small knot in his neck from the lack of a head pillow for the night, and placed the cushion back onto the bamboo base. Tim then quietly and deftly maneuvered around the many still sleeping teens strewn about the room and joined Troy in the kitchen.

“My dad went into work this morning but stopped to get us some tacos. He said he hoped we wouldn’t eat our family out of all the food in the house,” Troy said as he fished out a couple of tacos from a bag for himself. “I’m pretty sure he was kidding.” Jeff Smith and his girlfriend, who disappeared soon after their arrival at the party, were now snatching breakfast tacos from the many bags on the kitchen counter.

Tim grabbed a bag from the counter and fished out two of the tacos. “Hey, Troy, do you need a hand with cleanup? I haven’t looked outside to see the condition of your backyard since last night,” Tim asked while simultaneously inhaling a taco.

Troy smiled while he finished off one of his tacos. “Sure, but, believe it or not, it ain’t that bad out there.”

Tim turned to look out of the glass doors from the kitchen to the backyard pool area and its outdoor kitchen. There was some trash on the ground, but it was from overflowing trash cans. Other than that slight spillage, the pool area and the pool itself was rather tidy.

“Ah, shit!” Troy dropped a half-eaten taco onto it’s aluminum foil wrapper and quickly made his way out the door to the pool. Tim was right behind him, thinking something could be wrong.

“Who the fuck opened the grotto?” Troy yelled as he jogged his way to the hidden portion of the resort-style pool.

The gate, which Tim remembered seeing closed and locked when he joined the overnight guests in the game room, was now wide open, and several pieces of clothing marked the entrance to the heated Jacuzzi. The large screen TVs were on, featuring several nude women servicing one well-hung stud, and playing at high volume. Tim grabbed the remote from an outstretched hand of someone passed out on the couch and switched the TVs off. Several bottles of liquor were emptied and strewn about the small kitchen area. Tim’s attention then shyly focused on the four nude girls still asleep from their action overnight.

Troy nervously looked back toward the house and pulled Tim into the hidden cave and closed the gate behind them to hide that someone had gained access to the restricted area. Troy was obviously working to conceal this from his parents.

“I’ll ask again,” Troy exclaimed much more vocal than before, into the nearby ear of the lone male in the room. “Who the fuck opened that door?”

The louder questioning finally worked, and a couple of the sleeping bodies began stirring. “I’ll ask one more time. Who the fuck opened that door?” Troy asked even more loudly than before while pointing to the now-closed gate.

Tim was awakened out of his voyeur’s stunned stasis when someone shook his shoulder. Tim turned and found Jeff pointing over his shoulders with a wagging thumb for Tim to follow the senior lineman back to the kitchen. “Let Troy deal with that. You ready to get outta here?”

Tim looked around the room and noted a couple of other guests had made their way to the tacos.

The confused look on his face told Jeff precisely what he was thinking. “My girl was the driver for a couple of other girls, and she went to take them home. We are going out later tonight for some quiet alone time together.” Tim nodded his understanding and raised his hands, palms up, telling Jeff to lead the way.

“We’re taking off, dude! See you at practice, Monday!” Jeff yelled toward the pool area, and Tim saw Troy’s hand wave goodbye while he continued chastising whoever got caught in the pool’s grotto.

“Don’t worry, dude. Someone always breaks in there. His parents close it off because they don’t want some crazy high school kids holding an orgy in their hot tub. Frankly, I wouldn’t either,” Jeff explained while sticking out his tongue and acting like he was going to vomit as he unlocked the car.

“Well, that was fun.”

“Yeah, these parties usually are. This one was kinda laid back, though. I figure not that many people showed up since they didn’t think we could win the game.” Jeff smiled while he turned up the radio for a particularly loud rock song. Tim smiled back and bobbed his head along with the beat, and nothing more was said the rest of the way home.

“I’m home!”

“All hail the conquering hero! Come on. I made some breakfast. You hungry?” Tim instantly recognized his father’s voice from the kitchen.

“Um, yeah. I can eat.”

Raymond pulled out another plate for his son and snuck a quick peek to see his son enter the kitchen and took a moment to bask in the glory of his superstar football hero. He filled a dish with bacon and eggs and covered the plate with several homemade tortillas.

“Where’s everybody?” Tim asked.

“Your mom’s in the shower, and your sister is getting ready to go to her friend’s house. She’ll spend the day and night over there for some girl’s birthday party. I already feel sorry for their parents.” Tim chuckled at his father’s joke and took the dish, the tortilla plate, and two empty plates to the dining room table. Raymond grabbed two glasses and the pitcher of orange juice for the two men of the Murphy home.

Tim grabbed a tortilla and spooned some of the bacon and eggs to form a soft taco. He bit into the manna from heaven and smiled, rejoicing in the taste. Raymond glanced around to see if anyone else entered either the dining room or the kitchen behind them. He put his hand on Tim’s shoulder and leaned in carefully. “I think you should tell your mother about how you changed. I hate withholding any information from her, anyways. She seriously worries during each game.” Tim nodded his understanding.

Carmen came bouncing into the dining room just after both Murphy men took a few more bites. “Hi, Tim! Did you have fun at your paaaarrrrty last night?” She sang, using a faux-surfer girl Southern California accent, as she made her way around the table to hug her brother. Tim was impressed with her nailing the accent pretty well.

“Yes, I did have fun. I hear you are going to a birthday party today, huh?”

“Yeah, Tiffany is having a party this afternoon, and then tonight she is having a sleepover with a few friends. I’m gonna see how late I can stay up with my friends!”

“Well, don’t go crazy, but have fun.” After she nodded her agreement, Tim asked, “When are you leaving?”

“Um, not till later this afternoon,” she replied as she turned her head to look at the clock reading ten minutes till eleven in the morning. “Oh, wow! It’s already almost eleven! I need to finish picking out what I’m going to wear!”

She unwound her hug on her big brother and skipped her way out of the dining room toward her room. While she laughed down the hall, the door to the bathroom opened, and his mother’s sandals slapped their familiar drumbeat as she walked down the hall.

“Oh, don’t worry, I’ll just clean up after you two brutes. Make a mess in the kitchen dirtying every pot and pan in the house just to make some bacon and eggs!” She was smiling as she said it, so the Murphy men knew they weren’t in any real trouble. “Hi, Tim. Did you have fun destroying the Williams’ house with your new friends last night?”

“Oh, yeah! The fire department said it was going to be an interesting investigation to try and figure out exactly what burned the house to the ground,” Tim said with a smile and shoved another half of a taco into his mouth. Raymond laughed and did the same.

“Did you at least help clean up?”

“There wasn’t a need. I guess they often have parties there, and the people who come always keep up the cleaning as they go. They did have a big-time pool, though.”

“Oh, yeah? What kinda pool,” Raymond asked, and he shoveled the final bite of his taco into his mouth.

“It was like a resort. It had this big, like, three-story mountain with a slide circling it from the top, and it had a hidden grotto hollowed out, with a Jacuzzi, a couple of TVs, and even a small kitchen. The pool itself surrounded the mountain with this like lazy river thing that goes around and through the mountain. They had asked that no one used the grotto and had locked the gate to get into it but, when we woke up this morning, there were a few people who had found their way in there. Troy found them in there and tore them all new behinds. Jeff dropped me off just a little while ago.”

Tim picked up his and his father’s dirty dishes and took them into the kitchen, placing them in the dishwasher. He put his glass in, also, after swiftly swigging the final gulps of his juice.

Tim’s mother playfully slapped her son’s shoulder as he closed the dishwasher. The dishwasher was not yet full, so the house rule was to wait before running it. “Don’t forget about the backyard. You promised to cut it this weekend.”

“No problem, Mom. I’ll take care of it,” Tim snapped over his shoulder as he skipped to his room, just like his little sister had done only a minute earlier.

Once in his bedroom, with the door closed, Tim blew a quick kiss to the Cindy Crawford poster and turned on his laptop computer. While it was powering up, he dressed in his usual at-home clothes and tossed his party clothes in the hamper.

Tim spent a few minutes checking emails and social media. He never really got into social media since, before this year, he didn’t have many friends, and purposefully checking a website that continually reminded you of everything your friends were doing was not something Tim craved. He always heard from his friends about his need to widen his social media presence, but he just laughed that off.

However, the number of emails pouring into the new, improved Tim’s official school email account was always overflowing as it was the only way others could contact him. He had saved the email from the district email administrators that he received more daily emails than the rest of the school combined. They respectfully requested he think about engaging in social media a little more so the email traffic could come back to normal.

After a few minutes of clearing email, Tim suddenly remembered his promise to cut the lawn. He took a quick peek out the window, seeing much higher grass than usual, with numerous giant dandelions springing up sporadically all over the back yard. There was no use wishing his mother would forget about his promise to do the lawn, so he changed into an older pair of shorts and a t-shirt. He tied his older tennis shoes on his feet and grabbed his older mp3 player. It was a gift from a cousin when he was younger, and he liked that he could put it in his pocket, and it would play consistently without messing up any songs. He knew his cell phone could play his music, but he preferred not to be disturbed when doing yard work. It was something his family knew and, when he went to the garage to get the lawnmower ready, he informed his parents, who were relaxing on the sofa and watching TV together.

Just over an hour later, Tim returned the lawnmower to the garage and found his father waiting just inside the house from the garage.

“Your sister left for her sleepover. I think it is a perfect time to tell your mother about your change.”

Seeing the seriousness on his father’s face, Tim nodded in agreement. “Let me get a quick shower, and I’ll talk to you guys here at the table.” To which Raymond nodded and made his way back to his recliner.

After a quick shower to wash the sweat and cut grass off his body, Tim saw his mom sitting at the table in the kitchen. “Hey there, Mom? Can I talk to you and Dad for a minute?”

Juanita looked up at her oldest child and immediately went into “Mom” mode. “What’s wrong? Are you hurt? Did you hurt someone last night at your party? Did you get into trouble at the party?” While barraging her oldest son with questions, the mother cat rushed to and was checking over her oldest child. She froze for a second as an idea came to her mind. “Did you get someone in trouble?”

Tim hoisted his hands up, palms out, for his now upset mother. “No, Mom. Nothing bad,” Tim said, stifling a laugh. “It’s just something I need to tell you, okay?”

His mother took a moment to look at her son for the typical signs he was lying, but she didn’t see any.

“Oh, cut it out, Juana, he just needs to talk to you for a minute. It’s nothing bad. Come over here to the table and let him tell you,” Raymond announced, waving her into the dining room and then pulling out his and her seats at the table.

Tim made a beeline back to his room to retrieve the letters and the extra pill from their hiding spots under his bed. While returning to the dining room, he made a quick stop for a sharp knife from the kitchen.

Julianne Holmes was sitting at her dining room table, fancying another glass of wine while grading papers from her classes. “Well, I guess I’m getting better since I haven’t thought about him for a full ten minutes,” she joked to her empty apartment. The English teacher added up the mistakes on the current paper in front of her and wrote the grade on the top of the front page. She then filled in the grade on a spreadsheet on her computer.

Sipping another mouthful of wine, she reached for the next paper. “Ah shit,” she declared dejectedly. It was Tim’s.

With a deep breath and a determined attitude, she began reading her one-time lover’s paper. When finished, she was genuinely surprised at just how well Tim had done on the assignment. She smiled to herself, putting a deserved “A” on the cover sheet.

Julianne started grading the next paper but promptly realized her concentration was not on what she was reading. She remembered the way Tim picked her up like she was a rag doll and effortlessly moved her atop the bed as he wanted. Julianne was leaning back in her chair and reveling in the reminiscence of their past dalliance. She savored the way he brought her to the height of ecstasy so quickly. No! She stopped herself from continuing down that thought path, sat straight up in her chair, stood up, and finally shook out her arms and legs in an attempt to refocus her attention on the paper she was grading.

“I didn’t even talk to him this week but, then again, he didn’t make any effort to come and talk to me, either,” Julianne mumbled to herself. The English teacher sat back down, reached for the bottle of wine on the table, and emptied it into her glass. Julianne took big gulps from her wine glass, out of character for her, rose to take the empty bottle to the kitchen, and searched for another bottle – another out-of-character thing for her to do.

“I am just gonna nip this in the bud. It would be terrible for both of us if we got caught.” Deciding against uncorking another bottle, she grabbed a bottle of water out of the fridge and returned to her grading. “It was just a single time. Nothing can come out of this.” She exhaled slowly and continued with her grading. Eventually, her mind pressed on to continue to hash out her feelings, but she was finally able to fully concentrate on grading the rest of her papers. Once finished she decided her ending the relationship was the right thing to do. That battle with herself was finally over or at least a temporary cease-fire was called.

“Have you lost your ever-loving mind?” Juanita yelled at her oldest child. At the same time, she jumped up from her seat, grasping for her son’s hand with the now-bleeding self-inflicted knife wound. She also pulled a kitchen towel she had hanging from her shoulder.

“You tell this incredible tale about meeting your future self down at that damned creek!” She suddenly remembered something else and growled at her son. “I warned you against going into that damned creek! It’s nothing but sewage run-off!” While chastising her son, she was forcefully holding the towel against the hand Tim had just sliced, attempting to stop the flow of blood.

“Juanita, sit down. He’s fine. Watch and listen to him, or he’ll have to do it again.” Tim’s mother did not sit down but was still holding a towel against what she, for sure, knew was a cut so deep that they might have to worry about the future use of his fingers. She did stop chastising her son only because she desperately wanted but equally did not want to see the effects of her son’s dumbass stunt with a knife.

The entire time his mother tried to assist with his injury, Tim kept the knife in the wound to make sure she could see the full effects from the nanites. Raymond turned on the overhead light but quickly decided that was not enough, so he reached into a utility drawer and pulled out a flashlight. Following a quick on/off test on the way back to the dining room table, and he aimed the bright beam at the injured hand on the table. There was a decent amount of blood already collecting on the towel where the hand was resting.

Raymond nodded for his son to remove the knife. He then turned to his wife. “Now watch,” Raymond insisted.

Tim gently pulled the knife directly out, making sure not to saw any further into the flesh. The pain was real, but Tim was handling it. The first noticeable change was the blood flow stopping almost immediately. The cut was fairly deep, and Tim had second thoughts — maybe he did cut a little bit too deep.

Mayhem in a PillChapter 65 Party All the Time

“Damn, man,” Frank Robinson fumed as he slammed his right hand and forearm on the roof of the Ford Explorer. “Why the fuck did you do that, man?” Tim was about to slide into the passenger seat but stopped himself and stood back up to look at the driver and captain of the defensive side of the school’s varsity football team. “What are you talking about? I got a map to the real party right here,” Tim answered, a bit confused by his friends’ change in attitude. “Dude, never. Never. Never....

Mayhem 4 Irish MistChapter 15

I woke up to a pair of black eyes staring into mine only centimeters away. "I must be in heaven," I whispered. "Well," Leanne replied with a slight grin on her lips. "Ah will say of all the first words ya could have when returning from the dead those certainly saved yer arse a stern talking to." "I love you," I whispered again. "I wanted to say that before they..." "Enough," she said placing a finger lightly over my lips. "We know and that's enough." Her fingers moved up to...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 30 Friday Night Lights on a Saturday

The congratulatory pats on the back and raucous shaking from the freshman football team still in the locker room were easily heard outside the locker room where many parents and fans were waiting for the player-of-the-game to come out. Tim finished transferring his stuff from the freshman locker area into the JV locker room. Johnnie and the rest of Tim’s friends were sitting around waiting for him so they could make an appearance at the Sombrero Rosa’s across the street where many of the...

Mayhem 2 Sea CruiseChapter 6

-Brad & Patricia- "Well there you are," Pat said happily when she opened the door. "We were wondering when you'd show up. You're a day late and we started worrying." "Sorry," Brad said looking embarrassed. "One of my other families was having a little problem and it took me longer than I expected. Hopefully you haven't run out of anything because of my screw-up." "It wasn't a screw-up if you were helping someone," Pat admonished. "We have plenty; we just worried about...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 59 Catch 22

“So, you didn’t see anyone when you got out of the restroom?” Raymond asked his son while the two were in the front yard doing a final rinse of all the paint splashed on the family car. “No, sir. I opened the door and looked both ways, but no one was there, and a few minutes later, when I left the locker room, I also didn’t see anyone,” Tim answered but paused before continuing. “Now that I think about it, Dad. I didn’t even see the guys leave the restroom. I didn’t hear any rumors about...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 62 Finally A Challenge

The coin flip at the start of the game was interesting. The Churchill Chargers sent their entire offensive line to the fifty-yard line to meet the captains for the Roosevelt Rough Riders. The five young men were not precisely marching, but it looked as if they walked in perfect step with each other. It wasn’t with the same timing as a military march, but the center would take action, then the guards on either side would step, followed by the tackles on the outside. It was almost...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 16 Who Doesnt Like Mondays

There was something different in the locker room the following Monday morning before practice. Tim could almost feel it in the air as he entered. The normal early birds were already getting ready for first-period practice and, as usual, Tim was the first freshman to arrive. He was not alone for long, though. Others would begin arriving in a few minutes. After gathering his locker basket and changing into his workout shirt and shorts, Tim heard the main door to the locker room slam against...

-Daniel- Waking up in a hospital isn't exactly new to me unfortunately but waking up in one with a dark-haired angel curled up by my side sure was. If you have to wake up in a place like that I heartily recommend it. I was flat on my stomach with Sumalee snuggled in next to me. They must have given me some pain meds because I didn't feel anything but if they'd laid me face down there was probably a reason so I wasn't about to roll over. However the fact that they let someone in here with...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 57 Glitter Gets Everywhere

Monday morning, the change in the emotions of the student body was palpable. While the student body usually disregarded the results of the football team’s accomplishments, school pride was evident this day. Not only was their happiness of the win over Judson wafting strongly through the halls, but the following weekend was also Homecoming. This year, the Roosevelt Rough Riders were facing the Robert E. Lee Volunteers. The student body was already making plans for celebrating the next win over...

“Hey, Hunk! How’s your day going so far?” Cindy Diefendorf, the buxom blonde ‘Queen of the School,’ asked while Tim switched books for his next classes. Because of Tim’s popularity, the many different websites devoted to Tim were continually looking for new information about their subject. Therefore, Cindy knew that, after his math class and before his English class, Tim went to his locker to exchange his math book for the bulkier English textbook. Mayhem in a PillChapter 53 Judson vs Roosevelt Electric Boogaloo

The mood in the locker room was euphoric. A true party atmosphere. The coaches usually spent a few minutes outside of the locker room during halftime of a game, to give the team leaders time to go over the play of their teammates. Then the coaches would come in and tell them what they saw during the first half, and then together, they would try to correct problems and plan for what to do in the second half. These were all severe concentration and serious work times for the game, even if the...

Monday morning. Tim could feel something in the air was ‘off’ as soon as he walked into the locker room. It was deathly quiet. Tim expected the spirits of his fellow football players to be high after the last weekend of Roosevelt football success. Tim quickly learned, though, that the...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 29 Unexpected Opportunities

His smile was wide as he made his way down the hall to his room. He heard his mother showering and going through her processes for bed. His dad just gave a halfhearted hello as he walked past their bedroom door. His dad was busy watching TV. Tim turned on the overhead light as he entered his room and immediately closed and locked the door. He quickly blew a kiss to Cindy on the wall, sat down at the desk, and was taking off his shoes when his mom knocked. Tim unlocked the door. “Hey, I...

MayhemChapter 4

I didn't stay long at the party ― it was their party, not mine ― and hiked back up to the flying bridge. I sat there for a while and burned one while thoughts flew through my head. What had I gotten myself in for? Was it more than a little flirting? (Okay, I knew it was more than just flirting, but how much more?) The only thing I knew for sure was that I didn't want it to stop no matter where it led. The weather guessers were right about the front coming in, for once. By 0100 it was...

MayhemChapter 8

Top came back a little over an hour later grinning like a mad fiend at the same time Weird surfaced from his daze. "The East Bay warehouses," Top announced triumphantly. "That checks," Weird nodded. "The first tracker on her limo stopped transmitting about midnight, just about the time she was supposed to have left the party. The second one didn't stop until they got right here." He placed his finger on a map of the Bay area. It was an area just west of East Bay. At one time there...

MayhemChapter 9

We couldn't tell how closely they had been watching Tink's house or even if they were so we didn't head straight there. I'm sure it would have been safe enough but I didn't want to take even the small chance of getting into a firefight. Besides I had no desire to see Cynthia right then and Tink didn't want to go back home just yet. Tink did call her to briefly say she was okay and would be home soon. Luckily I had to only hear half of that conversation. "I'm fine, Mom," Tink said...

Mayhem 2 Sea CruiseChapter 4

- Daniel- Okay, I knew the Xanadu was big but until you look down at it from a few thousand meters you can't really know just how fucking big it really is! Sure I know the specs and you can look them up yourself if you want to: 1,450 meters in length, 524 meters wide, displaces about 180,000 tonnes and carries up to 20,000 passengers with a crew of almost 3,000. That's not a ship, it's a small floating island! We got a good look at it as we flew out to meet it on the shuttle. Of course...

Mayhem 2 Sea CruiseChapter 5

-Sumalee- I was happier than I probably should have been when Daniel walked into my lounge again the next day and sat down at the bar. I could not tell you exactly why I was happy he had returned but I was. I mean ... looking at him through unbiased eyes he is not particularly handsome, other than in an everyman, rugged sort of way. But he was nice and listened, laughed at my silly jokes and seemed to be enjoying talking to me for a reason other than just a ploy to separate me from my...

Mayhem 2 Sea CruiseChapter 7

-Sumalee- It was still dark when I woke up that first night although I could see a little in the dimness from the small amount of moonlight shining in through the window. I rubbed my cheek on the warm surface I was sprawled on and smiled when I was rewarded by the scratchy roughness of Daniel's chest hairs. I hadn't moved a centimeter from where I had fallen asleep and neither had he. I was still face down on his chest as he lay on his back. He was not snoring but I could hear and feel the...

Mayhem 2 Sea CruiseChapter 8

-Mr. Black- "Do you have the vest made up?" Black asked as Green frowned at him. "Yeah, sort of," Green replied. Before Black could ask the obvious question he continued. "The gel is setting up and will be ready at the same time everything else is. It'll go off; no problem. No, the problem is the detonator; actually the remote activator for the detonator. This wasn't exactly in the mission plans so we didn't bring that kind of equipment with us. I was able to adapt an old raghead...

Mayhem 2 Sea CruiseChapter 15

-Sumalee- To say it had been an interesting evening would be an understatement. The relationship Daniel has with his team would make for a lifetime study by any clinical psychologist. We met two more of them that night: the brothers Stanley and Samuel. Their reaction to Lidia and myself was fascinating. It was almost like they had known us as long as Michelle, Brian and Nathan; almost like they had shared memories. As I said, fascinating, exciting and just a little intimidating. Not that...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 33 A Man of Wealth and Taste

A Man of Wealth and Taste Raymond Murphy had trouble keeping the smile off his face. His son Tim was going on and on about how cool it was being on the sidelines for the varsity football win against the Clark Cougars. The first half of football featured an unsure Roosevelt team going up against a Clark team who, though good, was not up to their usual standards and was going to have a down year. Roosevelt was not expected to make the playoffs. “I’m telling you, Dad, Frank Robinson looked...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 39 Control Alt Delete

Leonard Huffnagle was having a lot of trouble looking for dirt on Tim Murphy from San Antonio Roosevelt High School. The only tangible thing he was able to confirm was that Tim had gifted the Trojan iPad, given by Coach Andrew Thomas of IMG Academy, to his little sister, Carmen. IMG was known for recruiting the best high school football players from across the country and giving them highly specialized coaching to better prepare them for college football. Kids graduating from IMG often...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 45 Proper Motivation

Rodney Valentine’s throat was sore from his screaming. His knuckles were scratched and bruised from pounding on that poor, unsuspecting asshole who didn’t know any better. Rodney was especially pissed because no one could figure out why he was so pissed off in the first place. Valentine and his posse of teammates arrived at the house party a little bit later than everyone else, as usual. It was an unwritten rule that the host of the party would have the game highlights from that weekend’s...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 49 Onyx

Tim, Troy, Rob, Frank, and Jeff were quiet most of the way on the drive to the address included with their multi-colored cards found in their lockers after the beating the Rough Riders had given to the Johnson Jaguars. The five young men crammed into Jeff’s GTO were mostly quiet, daydreaming about the story Troy had told them. “I think I know what this is. You guys feel like having an experience?” Troy asked with a strange, tilted smile. “My dad told me a story that he said I could never...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 51 A Messy Situation

A Messy Situation Once Tim Murphy closed his bedroom door and turned on the bedroom lamp, he blew a quick kiss to his one-and-only Cindy, taped up on the wall, and collapsed on the bed with the biggest smile of his life. Tim was quietly reliving what had happened to him after the game. When he laughed to himself, he realized he didn’t even think about the game when the great time he had that night ran through his mind. The quiet knock on the bedroom door alerted him to the here and now. The...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 63 Is It Better To Be Lucky or Good

Tim Murphy and the nanites in his body had already written the two reports – one for his English class and the other for his US History class. It was just a matter of typing and formatting the report in the proper sets. All in all, the two assignments only took a few minutes to type, save, and email to their respective teachers. When he sent his English paper, he had a flash of remembrance of his short relationship with his English teacher, Julianne Holmes, considered one of the hot teachers...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 64 Itrsquos Just a Party What Could Happen

The week of practice started with a few announcements from Big John on Monday morning. Big John had canceled morning practice with a sign written on the giant dry erase board along the long wall in the locker room. He didn’t cancel all practice, but it would be just no helmets or pads. That meant a full hour of lifting weights rather than working out on the practice fields in full pads – a day off for sure. Before practice would have typically begun, the Roosevelt football teams met in the...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 69 Sounds Good to Me

Going into downtown San Antonio for evening dinner was rare for the Murphy family. Of course, they went out to dinner occasionally but not very far from their neighborhood. Raymond had ordered the women in his life to a day of indulgence at their favorite beauty spa to get pampered and eventually have their makeup done. While the womenfolk were enjoying their day of pampering, the men folk went to fill a glaring hole in the younger Murphy man’s life: the lack of a nice suit. Tim had never...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 70 Dinner and a Show

As they did so often, the Murphy family sang along with the music on the radio. The Murphy parents both enjoyed all genres and encouraged their children to listen to all types of music. Juanita had her favorites and listened to them with the specialized music channels through the cable provider. She preferred the popular hits from the 1980s and 1990s, while Raymond also preferred that and rock music from the 1970s. The patriarch of the family steered into a parking lot nearby the...

Mayhem 4 Irish MistChapter 4

The next day was moving day. I've heard how being out on tour with an entertainer can seem a little like riding a tornado without a safety belt but you couldn't tell that by me. I've heard how some tours play twenty cities in twenty days but that isn't how things are done in Ireland. Time seems less important and venues aren't always open when you want them to be. We were doing 25 shows in three months and that included a two-week break in the middle to "relax." Not exactly an arduous...

Mayhem 4 Irish MistChapter 5

The next few weeks were just plain work. It probably seems like touring with a popular band would be great fun and endless adventure but mostly it was a lot like combat: endless hours of boredom interrupted by moments of shear terror. Well, terror is probably a bit of an overstatement, maybe agitation and concern would be more appropriate. Anytime the girls were heading into a large crowd there was a concern; happily we hadn't had anything like the clusterfuck we'd seen in Clonakilty but...

A long flight awaited you at the airport and knowing you couldn't stand to be this horny all the way home you decided to take matters into your own hands one more time before leaving. Mayhem in a PillChapter 3 Back to the Future

A by product of time travel that no one knew about was the momentary blindness and nausea brought on from the rapid assault to your senses immediately after travel. But for some reason only on your return. When he re-materialized in the time travel chamber, Tim Murphy needed to shield his eyes from the suddenly ultra bright lights. He also needed to make a concerted effort to control his nausea. Nausea controlled and his sensitivity to light diminishing, Tim decided it was time to see how...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 5 At the Hospital

The drive to the hospital was uneventful and easy enough. Tim’s mother, Juanita, parked the family SUV in a General’s parking spot, right outside the front entrance to the emergency room. Tim’s father, Raymond, who was standing just inside the ER doors, knew from the frantic sound of his wife’s voice on the phone that she would not obey the parking rules and would take the first available space she found. Raymond quickly reached the SUV before Juanita could turn off the engine. He stuck his...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 6 An Unexpected Debut

Summer two-a-day practices are a rite of passage for the Texas high school football player. The players arrived at their new high school, two weeks before the start of the new school year. Sure, they were only going to the football locker room, the football practice fields and also the weight room; but the psychological advantage of being able to GO to high school, earlier, was a definite positive feeling for the young soon to be high schooler. Freshmen did not have their own cars ... yet....

To say Tim was excited, would be a major understatement. “It was sooo cool, Mom,” Tim was almost jumping up and down in the front seat of the SUV while his mother was driving them home. “I was sitting there reading, and the librarian came up to me. I didn’t even hear her, as I was paying attention to what I was reading. She actually scared me when she touched my shoulder to get my attention. Standing with her was Coach Barrett, her husband. He’d come all the way to the library to just meet...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 8 Doubting the Future

The lights turned on in the cell at half past six, every morning since Tim got back from his trip to the past. About a week after returning from the past, his nanites confirmed his hypothesis that no one he had met, yet, had any nanites of their own. Tim theorized to himself the interrogators did not have any nanite improvements since they constantly made mistakes in their questioning and also in their answers to his questions. Oh, they answered the questions as he believed they would but...

A good hundred or so young men full of testosterone and desperate to show they were not afraid, were indeed afraid. Afraid of not fitting in. Afraid of being shown they were not good enough to make it on the freshman football team. Afraid they were good enough to make it on the freshman football team. Afraid of the high school girls. Afraid of the high school guys. Afraid of the work their new teachers were preparing to pile on them. Afraid they would not be able to finish the work their new...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 10 Lets Get It Started

With the day’s drama complete after finishing with their equipment, they began leaving the locker area to try and enjoy their final day of relaxation before the two-a-days started. Tim and his friends crossed a very busy Walzem Road, right in front of the high school. Walzem Road’s three lanes headed northeast and three lanes going southwest were divided by a median island running the length of the high school. Once beyond the high school, the divider island changed into a turning lane....

The tacos were just great. Tim was still not doing anything to jeopardize the loss of the twice-a-week breakfast tacos treats. George was still bringing in the savory, artery-clogging breakfast tacos from everyone's favorite family restaurant. In fact, George was now adding an extra taco, since he understood the body's instant response once it smelled one of Yolanda's tacos. Mayhem in a PillChapter 12 A Day of Firsts

First day of school for both Murphy kids saw a return of a family tradition: Mom fixed a full breakfast for everyone. Pancakes, bacon, sausage, eggs, fruits and all kinds of baked goods. She generally cooks for the family, then the mothers from the neighborhood carpool come and enjoy a wonderful meal at their own pace. There were usually a few empty bottles of wine in the trash when the kids returned home from the first day of school. Rumor has it the same carpoolers also got together toward...

“Hey, Joe, what do you mean the freshmen offense knows fourteen plays already? I thought Big John only wanted the freshmen to concentrate on getting in shape, until at least the first scrimmage,” Kevin Krebsback, the JV and Varsity defensive backs coach asked, once the freshmen left the coaches office for second period. “It’s exactly what I said it was, Kevin,” Coach Alvarez said. "I know you guys are keeping the pain receptors turned off during my questioning, but are there any problems with maintaining the status quo? I ask because I am starting to feel some of the pain," Tim whispered to himself while he held a pillow over his own face in a mock effort to fall asleep. "So, how was the first day for you?" Tim's father, Raymond, was sitting on the desk chair while his son was finishing his first journal entry for his honors U.S. History class. "It was pretty good, Dad. You were right about the girls. Everywhere I went, I started seeing more and more girls looking at me and then looking away if I made eye contact with them. Mayhem in a PillChapter 18 Enough is Enough

The newly-instituted procedure of sleep deprivation was annoying at worst because the nanites in his system could effectively turn off the pupils of Tim Murphy’s eyes and keep the lights from waking him. The same could be done for his hearing. The nanites would disable his hearing so any loud or annoying auditory stimuli would eventually be deemed ineffective. At the moment, Tim was quietly reveling in this private joke. The guards were pumping loud and annoying sounds, usually called music,...

Mayhem in a PillChapter 19 The Emperor is Wearing No Clothes

Losing their first game of the season was bad. But when Head Varsity Coach John Fontana pulled his truck into his driveway, his wife was waiting outside for him. She had received several calls from various school officials, wanting to know what was Big John going to do about the brewing controversy. She told everyone her husband was not yet home, as he usually went to dinner with the other coaches after a big loss. When the teams won, he would tell his coaches to go home and be with their...
