Chapter 21 -- Randall to the Rescue
A room was located in the library where Jimmie and Janie could store the
donations and work on booth arrangements. They shared a desk and took
turns on a library laptop shaping up a local website that would list
inventory, sales prices, and individual sales. Jimmie was pretty good at
this, and started to feel optimistic about Booster Day. Janie worked on
basic inventory categories, but stated that her friend Randall had better
skills because he had set up shops on Etsy. It soon became evident that,
first, they needed the actual donations to fill in the detailed data and,
second, they had to join up with Randall.
Janie said, "Why don't you come back to my apartment this evening and
meet Randall? We live together, and I'm certain he will agree to help,
OK? Meanwhile, can you contact the person donating the items to arrange
for pickup? Randall will use his van for that."
OK, this was good, Jimmie thought -- problem solved on how to get the
"duplicate bins" to the library. "Sure, that would work great. I will
call the shop owner donating the items to arrange a convenient pick-up
time. I already have the location."
Interesting, Janie thought. This had been Ms. Butler's idea, supposedly,
but Jimmie seemed completely familiar with the all the specifics. For the
moment, she would not draw Jimmie's attention to the discrepancy; better
to get him comfortable working with her. She also stifled the urge to
compliment Jimmie on his outfit today, thinking it was far better to
treat it as non-remarkable and wait for Randall's reaction.
They'd accomplished a lot in just a few hours, both of them truly pleased
with themselves and each other. At quitting time, they Ubered to Janie's
apartment with the laptop, and she let Jimmie in, to meet Randall "as a
surprise". It seemed she had not asked Randall in advance about joining
the venture, or that she was bringing Jimmie home to meet him. This was
just one of many ways she reminded Randall who was in change of their
relationship.
"Randy, honey, I'm home and have a surprise for you. It's a co-worker I'd
like to stay for dinner." As she'd surmised, Randall -- "Randy" it seemed
-- was in the midst of dinner preparations and wearing his utilitarian
white apron, one of his favorites. Also, he was wearing a long black tee-
shirt that reached his thighs and black leather mules. His long hair was
up in a ponytail, held with a white scrunchy.
Randall's face flushed at the thought of being dressed like this in front
of a stranger. It was arguably male garb for the most part, if not
particularly masculine, but the apron had bright yellow piping at the
edges and highlighting the two pockets at the waist. This was not the
first time he had felt humiliation when this had happened, but it hadn't
happened in quite a while.
But wait. Who was this co-worker -- was it a guy or a gal? He or she was
dressed dramatically, in an all-in-one denim outfit that sort of looked
like overalls, but also sort of looked like a dress. There was a bib at
the front, and straps up over the shoulders to the back, and the lower
part flared so much that it wasn't clear if it was a dress or wide-legged
culottes. The outfit stopped just below the knees, with a set of smooth
bare legs below. On top, he or she wore a kind of white tee-shirt with a
princess collar. What the. . . ?
"Randy, this is Jimmie -- we work together at the library. Jimmie, this is
my housemate Randy. I asked Jimmie to join us for dinner because we have
a venture we'd like to present to you. I'm certain you can really help
with it. If you show Jimmie where the plates and utensils are, he can set
the table."
Reeling at all this information, and at Jimmie's captivating outfit,
Randall just nodded assent. This was a guy, dressed "fetchingly" in
Randall's mind. Strangely, he no longer felt humiliation, but rather
curiosity about Jimmie and the joint project they might undertake. The
fact that Janie had effectively ordered Jimmie to set the table, rather
than do it herself, told him a lot as well. This had happened before too,
and it had had an enjoyable outcome.
Jimmie did not even register that setting the table was typically the
host's responsibility, not a guest's. He was so used to taking direction
from women, and Janie was so self-certain, that he simply went to work.
Randall kept the meal going, pan-fired scallops and braised spinach, and
soon they were ready to take their seats. A nice chilled Peruvian wine
and a loaf of French bread completed the meal.
"Randy, once Jimmie and I are seated and served, you should join us, but
only after you have removed your apron," Janie directed. Randall simply
nodded at this, pulled out Janie's chair to assist her, then moved to
pull out Jimmie's chair. Surprised and pleased, Jimmie offered
gratefully, "That's so nice of you, and I do hope we get to work
together," as Randall pushed in his chair.
His apron removed, Randall prepared a plate for himself and took the seat
to Jannie's right. The conversation started slowly, with Janie outlining
the Booster Day "venture" and Randall becoming enthusiastic about his
role in the preparations. He seemed intrigued by the challenge of
storing the inventory of bras and panties, and which details to track
beyond color and size.
Janie explained how important "construction" was, whether under-wired or
not, whether clipped at the front between the cups or the back, whether
or not a compressive type of sports/running style. Then, Jimmie weighed
in. "And one thing we have to address is the possibility of offering a
matched set of bra and panty. We can match manufacturer and color, even
material, but the thing is women vary in panty size so we could not match
them in advance. We might be able sort them into boxes by size and color
only, and let shoppers browse -- that might work, but the other thing is
we could only offer them if a 'donation' is made, because California
ordinances bar the sale of used underwear."
This might have been the most Jimmie had ever said out loud to others,
and it floored both his listeners. But Janie immediately intuited that
they should not draw attention to Jimmie's total familiarity with the
topic of women's underwear, despite his earlier indications of total
unfamiliarity, but rather should steer away from this volatile topic
right away.
"Enough 'shop talk' don't you think? Randall, you have a lot to offer and
I want you to join us. Your first job will to take Jimmie in your van to
pick up the donations. Having them will allow you two to categorize them
and enter the bras and panties into an online database for instant access
at our booth on Booster Day. Understood?"
"Yes ma'am, right away," Randall replied, his mind churning with the
opportunity to show interest in women's underwear publicly, with no
chance of censure.
The swift change of topic did the trick --Jimmie seemed unaware that he
had inadvertently disclosed his knowledge of retailing women's underwear.
His mind was elsewhere. "Randall, I think your apron is very pretty -- can
you tell me where you got it?" This was said without hint of
embarrassment about his interest in a feminine garment or use of the term
"pretty". Janie smiled broadly and said, "I got it for Randy's birthday,
and I'll get you the website URL. They come with various trim colors, but
I like the yellow best."
Jimmie replied, "The yellow is just the right accent, I think. When
Randall took it off for dinner, it took something away from his overall
look. I even had a thought about what he could do to maintain the look."
Somehow, Janie and Jimmie had shifted to discussing him in the third
person, as if he weren't there, and in fact he had been virtually silent
throughout the evening, either nodding to Janie's directions, or agreeing
in the fewest words possible.
"Just what were you thinking, Jimmie, about Randy's appearance? Please
share."
"Well, I often complement my work outfits, if my calves show, with knee-
highs in various colors, mostly nylons but sometimes cotton."
"But today you didn't, did you? You have such smooth calves you really
don't need the knee-highs," Janie countered. "PEDS would work -- do you
know what those are?"
"Sure, I'm wearing PEDS. I want to keep my slip-on's nice and clean."
Better and better, Janie thought. She could hardly believe this
cornucopia of gratifying disclosures had appeared, virtually unbidden,
and that her Randall was obviously fascinated by Jimmie's look -- he was a
true ingenue. Really, both of them were.
"Let me guess," Janie responded. "You think Randy could complement his
outfit with nice yellow knee-highs, right? I wish I had thought of that."
Jimmie, rarely the center of attention, was enjoying this focus on
himself and, most of all, on a highly receptive audience to his
imaginative fashion suggestions.
And that was that. Randall would help out however he could, starting with
a trip with Jimmie to pick up the donations the following day. Then, the
two of them would shape up the database to record the donated items, and
Jimmie was relaxed enough at this point to look forward to sharing with
Randall all he knew about categorizing women's underwear. The two of them
cleared the dinner dishes and went to the sink to wash them. Randall
donned his apron, and Janie leant Jimmie a short gingham apron of her's,
so he wouldn't spill anything on his denim culottes.
