Chapter 19 -- The Booster Day "Venture" Shapes Up
After the store closed, Ms Oberdofer offered Jimmie a ride home in view
of the rough morning he had endured, and he gratefully accepted. Only
when he was buckled into the Maserati seat did he realize he had
forgotten to change out of his uniform.
"Ms Oberdofer, sorry, but I have to go back to the store and change out
of my shift and slippers. It will only take a minute."
"Nonsense sweetie. You look great in your outfit. When you get home, you
can change," she countered. She registered with pleasure that Jimmie
still wore the camisole, with straps showing, and the barrette. "I'm more
interested in whether your supervisor at the library has approved your
idea for our excess inventory."
While the thought of appearing in his shift, plus the and cream slippers,
at his apartment, in his "regular life", seemed frightening, he accepted
his boss' direction and was eager to relay the news about his plan for
the inventory.
"Ms. Butler likes my idea and approved it, and she says to say 'thank
you' to you for your generosity. I hope you agree too."
Ms Oberdofer was certain she would and was genuinely intrigued to learn
what Jimmie had come up with. "So, spill the beans my young friend -- I am
totally ready to say 'full speed ahead'."
Jimmie then recounted his detailed planning for the sale of the excess
lingerie at the Booster Day event, including the use of some borrowed
display racks from one of the stores, reasonable charges, and a poster
with assurances about the proceeds being dedicated 100-percent to Library
outreach projects, and about the cleanliness of the merchandize. "I do
not think we can allow shoppers to try on the 'items'," as he referred
them to avoid embarrassment, "because then we couldn't sell them
subsequently, but we can offer a 'satisfaction guaranteed' return policy.
We will ask the staff of the Acquisitions group to staff the booth." All
this came pouring out and was more than a mouthful.
"Jimmie, I wholehearted approve of your magnificent plan too, just like
your library supervisor. You are a creative thinker, for sure. And I can
help by bringing the duplicate bins of underwear to the sale site."
Uh oh. Jimmie hadn't anticipated this development. It was a sincere and
generous offer, and he had no basis to refuse. "Thank you, and I will ask
Ms. Butler if this is a good idea."
Chapter 20 -- Getting the Booth Ready for Booster Day
Ms Butler had announced "her" idea for Booster Day to the Acquisitions
group staff and encouraged their help in the setup, and then the staffing
of the booth on Booster Day. She radiated genuine enthusiasm and
explained how it would be unique, contribute to conserving resources and
thereby indirectly help the environment, and offer shoppers real bargains
they would appreciate. As the details emerged -- that they would be
selling used women's underwear -- a few staffers visibly blanched but,
overall, reception was positive.
"Now, while the acquaintance who originated the idea and who has the
excess items will donate them to us for free, it will take some thought
and organization to arrange 'the stock' and work out pricing and how we
keep track of sales and the proceeds. I anticipate this will turn out to
be popular with shoppers, so being well organized is imperative.
"With this in mind, I have already asked Jimmie to take on the many
arrangements we need, because he has demonstrated great initiative and
organization skills in the DBV program -- the 'Deliver Books Volunteering'
program you know -- and he accepted the job. Of course, he doesn't know a
thing about female unmentionables, so what I promised him was another,
female staffer, who could guide him in things like sizes, materials, that
sort of thing. I ask that the women on staff consider this and come
volunteer if they are willing to pitch in. I could do it myself, and will
if need be, but I'd rather it were one of you."
Mere hours later, Janie Cooper came to Ms. Butler and offered her help.
She said she had a boyfriend who had made a successful business out of
"consulting" on Etsy shops, setting up the bookkeeping and categorizing
of merchandise that were necessary to succeed online.
"I could tell him to assist Jimmie, for free of course, and his help
would go a long was to make our 'venture', if I could call it that, would
succeed. I have long wanted to get to know Jimmie better, since I so
admire his fashion sense." As she finished, she looked knowingly at Ms.
Butler. "May I call it 'our venture' Gwendolyn?"
This was a first. a staffer calling her "Gwendolyn", and Ms. Butler
returned the knowing look. Then, "Yes Janie, call me Gwendolyn, and tell
me a bit more about your boyfriend and your interest in Jimmie's fashion
sense. But clarify first; did you say you would 'ask' your boyfriend or
will you "tell" him he was going to help us two?"
Janie liked the "us two" and the knowing look, and she responded "Randall
is perhaps a bit more passive than most boys -- susceptible to suggestion
and even direction -- and he has shown he likes to follow my lead in many
things. I proposed the Etsy opportunity to him, for instance.
"But in one area, I have not been able to guide him yet. Despite several
offers to lend him my clothes or shoes when I think he'd look good in
them, he has resisted. I can't figure it out. Usually, he is amenable to
my 'guidance', but not in wearing some of my things so he'll look more
'metropolitan'. He does follow my other wardrobe suggestions That's why
Jimmie's transformation fascinates me."
Ms. Butler had some ideas of what might prompt Randall's resistance, but
she kept them to herself for now. She intuited "And you think that
getting Randall and Jimmie together might lead lead to a well-turned-out
boyfriend, right?"
"Yes, yes, yes. I have been thinking exactly that for weeks, but I did
not know how to approach it until now. I'd love to work with you to make
this happen." She stopped breathless after this last, frank outpouring of
her deep-felt desire to work on Randall.
"Janie, I think this 'venture' will suit us both, and predict it will
suit our two boys as well, so lets 'tell' Jimmie now, and you can you can
'tell' Randall tonight."
Ms. Butler called Jimmie over to her desk, told him Janie would assist
him, and that she knew a guy who was well-versed in setting up shops --
all the particulars --and that Janie would ask him to pitch in too.
Janie then told Jimmie she could be his "helper" and instruct him in the
ins-and-outs of women's underwear -- sizing, manufacturers, and that sort
on thing -- and together they could then organize the donations and price
them.
"You mean that I would actually have to handle the 'items', the things
that women wear under their clothing," he asked nervously. "In front of
the staff and the shoppers?"
"Oh, I think so. I'll be right there with you, but if I'm helping one
shopper, and another asks you directly about an 'item' she is interested
in, you would have to help her out, don't you see?" Janie was thrilled by
Jimmie's discomfort. She worked for the same reaction from her Randall.
"It's not a big thing Jimmie. The guy I mentioned who is going to help
set up the shop operations, he does my shopping and laundry for me. He
helps a lot and, now that I think about it, he knows enough to set up the
bra and panty categories -- he'll teach you a lot."
Ms. Butler piped up "That's swell. I have a guy who does my laundry --
hand washes my panties -- and shops for my menstrual needs. He even tracks
my monthly cycle on his phone. I've asked him to carry tampons and panty
liners with him when my cycle is approaching."
"Neat, Gwendolyn" Janie replied. "Of course, to do that here at work, I'd
have to find a girl or guy who'd be willing to track my cycle. Maybe I
can find someone who'd do that, and carry my tampons and panty liners."
She grinned at Ms. Butler, who grinned back.
"Getting back on track folks...." Ms. Butler interjected. "Thank you
Janie for volunteering yourself and your friend, if he's agreeable.
Jimmie, I think it will work splendidly, and you two can use library time
to work on this because it's a sanctioned library activity. But you must
get started soon." Ms. Butler had not so subtly "told" Jimmie he was
agreeing to the arrangement.
Jimmie did "agree" with Ms. Butler, of course; what else could he do. And
he was shocked that one of her staff was on a first-name basis with her.
He could never do that! The idea that he would become familiar with
specifics of women's underwear -- to the knowledge of the library staff --
that was unnerving. He knew he had to play along, but still...
