Chapter 24 -- Janie and Ms. Oberdorfer Share a Moment
Once the duplicate bins were loaded in the van, Ms. Oberdorfer told the
boys "I want to follow you to the location where you store the items I've
donated, so I get the lay of the land and can offer some guidance about
how the items are organized in the bins." This was a bit strange, because
Jimmie had packed the bins and knew just how they were organized, but he
knew he should just go along with this.
As for Randall, Ms. Oberdorfer felt sure he would also agree because she
had earlier tested his susceptibility to female direction, When they were
entering her shop to collect the bins, she said to Randall "You know, you
should protect your nice hairdo just as Jimmie has -- I've got a bandana
inside to lend you and I want you to wear it, OK?" It was not really a
question. Randall nodded assent without a word. Yes, he was unambiguously
susceptible to direction and, in fact, he looked great in the red bandana
that matched Jimmie's.
As soon as they arrived at the rear loading dock of the library, Randall
texted Janie to alert her to their arrival. This was a scary moment for
Jimmie, because he had never been seen in his bib shorts by Janie or the
rest of the staff and he was frightenedabout this "exposure" to his co-
workers -- because he was literally exposed in the girly and very short
shorts.
But it worked out fine. When Janie spotted her Randy and Jimmie, wearing
matching bandanas no less, she smiled broadly and immediately took
charge. "Hi guys, this worked out just great. If you can load the items
on this cart, I can take them up to our Booster Day room. Jimmie, I'm
guessing you'd rather not have the staff see you in your work duds."
Jimmie nodded to Janie with gratitude, and intuited that Janie would look
out for him in moments like these that could prove a little humiliating
from time to time. This certainly was one of them, because was well aware
of what was showing at the hem of his shorts.
Just as they started shifting the bins to the loading cart, Ms.
Oberdorfer drove up and parked by the platform. Janie registered the
Maserati, the very well put together look this new arrival radiated, and
her confident manner as she moved toward the van.
"Hello there. Might you perchance be Jimmie's supervisor here at the
library? I'm the owner of the shop where he works part time. He's often
told me about how much he enjoys his work here, especially when he can
help his boss with her personal needs." It was as though the two women
were communicating directly and Jimmie wasn't even present.
The women took each other in -- both aware of how the two boys were
dressed, smooth legs displayed and in matching bandanas -- and considered
their next moves.
Janie started with "Why no, Gwendolyn Butler is the supervisor of our
group, and I'm Jimmie's colleague Janie. On this project, I'm sort of the
'helper bee', just acquainting him with the ins-and-outs of women's
underwear we will be offering at Booster Day. Are you the generous
benefactor who's making the donations?"
"Yes I am," Ms. Oberdorfer replied, "but I can hardly take credit for
this delightful project. Jimmie had the original idea and assembled the
donations on his own time."
"Oh, so Jimmie has some familiarity with women's underthings, bras and
panties and all that?" Janie asked, smiling as she connected the dots.
Then, "I'm Randy's roommate and 'the benefactor' who has donated his time
and talents to this project." She grinned as she made her point. This
time, it was Randall who may as not have been present.
"Excellent Janie. I look forward to dealing with both you and Jimmie on
the run-up to Booster Day. I'm so happy to play a part in all this." And
with that, Ms. Oberdorfer departed.
Chapter 25 -- Janie, the Defacto Director
Soon after the delivery of the donations, Ms. Butler had announced to the
library Branch Director that her group would participate in Booster Day
with a novel offering. When she detailed that it would be selling women's
lingerie -- "preowned" she called it and barely worn -- the Director at
first seemed hesitant. Ms. Butler had anticipated this potential snag,
but also that the Director was a woman, a very busty woman. So, Ms.
Butler had come to the meeting "locked and loaded".
She had first visited the room set aside for the venture and asked Janie
if they might have a very "fresh" bra among the donations that might fit
the Branch Director. Mystified, Janie said they might and turned to
Jimmie for help.
Jimmie, naively responding without a thought to his supposed ignorance of
women's lingerie, piped up "Ms. Goudy is probably a 34D, and I know we
have a turquoise La Perla in her size with the original Bloomingdale's
sales tags attached. I remember it clearly because it's never been worn.
Let me find it." And he went to the bin he had earlier packed and soon
located it. "In the shop, we'd price this at $80 or $90 because it sells
new at $300. See the tag?"
Ms. Butler thanked them both and took the La Perla to her meeting with
the Director. "Janice," she started, "I figured you might have a concern
about our stock, so I brought a sample. Have a look at this bra. It's
brand new so maybe better than most, but not really. The store that
donated these for free is very choosy about what it sells. Just imagine --
this bra is something they would donate as excess? All the donations are
'grade A'" She smiled because she correctly anticipated the Director's
positive reaction.
"My goodness, this is remarkable. It's never been worn. I would buy that
at your booth, no concerns whatsoever."
"Gee, really?" Ms. Butler responded. "If it's your size, you could buy it
now for $60. That's what we priced it at. This is an example of how we
want to truly benefit the shoppers that day, you know, and help the
environment at the same time, by recycling quality goods like this."
Every persuasive syllable had been practiced in advance.
"It's my size and one of my preferred brands. At that price, I can't pass
it up if you think it's fair to other shoppers."
"It most certainly is. My staff tells me that there is a good selection
in -- what size is this --oh yes, a 34D. It's your's."
The venture was summarily approved, and fully endorsed. Ms. Butler even
got across the thought that if the booth did well, the Branch Directory
would be praised as an advocate for it. But she also took care to give
credit where credit was due: "I don't want to falsely take credit for
this venture; a thoroughly creative young man on my staff came up with
the idea and even located the donations for us." She was careful to not
refer a staffer as a "boy" to upper management.
As she left, she added "I can ask Janie on my staff to look and see if
there is a matching turquoise panty in your size if you wish. California
ordinances do not allow the 'sale' of used underwear, so you could
instead make a 'donation' of $15 or $20 or whatever you deem fair."
"Great idea; I'm a size 7," the very happy Director replied. And, voila,
it was set.
With the project approved, Ms. Butler and Janie met the following day to
move the "venture" into high gear. Without discussion, Janie now led the
preparations, and Jimmie and Randy became her two helpers. She quickly
arranged with the Booster Day organizers to occupy a double-sized booth,
and asked Jimmie to contact Ms. Oberdorfer for the loan of display racks
for the the bras at the front of the booth. The "free" panties would
occupy shallow boxes and be organized by size and style -- hip-huggers,
low-rise, etc. -- and placed on the booth's front counter. She accepted
his suggestions about the notice boards about "100% return policy, no
questions asked", cleanliness of the articles offered, and the "request
for donations" in return for "free" panties. All pretense that Jimmie was
new to the field of female lingerie was abandoned. And things moved
smoothly.
She knew Randall would commit totally to the database/inventory end of
things, and for that she was truly grateful, but she also wanted to give
him a bigger role, somewhat comparable to Jimmie's so he wouldn't feel
eclipsed. so, "Randy dear, would you give some thought to a sort of
'uniform' or 'outfit' that we three and the women who assist customers
can all wear so we come across as a true team on Booster Day? I think it
will impress our customers and set us apart from the other booths that
day. For instance, we could all dress just as you did the other day, in
tan shorts and a white shirt. But, whatever you come up will work, I'm
sure."
"Yes Janie, I'd like that -- I can come up with something good," Randall
promised, happy to have this new responsibility.
Jimmie's first new assignment was to locate size 7 turquoise La Perla or
equivalent panties for the Branch Director. He soon found a pair of
Natori panties in very good shape. When he brought them to Janie, she
said "Great, I want you to take them to the Director's office and offer
them to her, with a suggested donation of $15, OK? And please take three
options if we have them, so she has a choice."
Jimmie knew he had to do this, no question, but he was already feeling
bit embarrassed because his outfit that day had been suggested by Yvette,
in good faith of course, but it left him just a bit "exposed", quite
literally. He had expected to spend the day in the so-called "Booster
Room" with Janie and Randall, and not have to face the library staffers.
Now it looked like he would have to go down to the Director's office on
the first floor of the library.
His outfit was a popular brand of indigo blue high-waist yoga leggings
and matching bra top, with a "tummy control panel" that managed to
minimize any bulge at his crotch but not eliminate it. With his Japanese
hairdo, now with pigtails, he could be mistaken for a girl he knew. How
had he ended up in this fix?
Janie consoled him. "Jimmie, you need to be brave about this. You have
great fashion sense, just like Randy, and you two are leading other boys
here in LA to a more pleasing, enjoyable future. If you wish, I can
accompany you on this errand, but you really need to take some credit for
this truly remarkable venture you have brought about, and do this on your
own."
Reluctantly, Jimmie assented. Off he went to the first floor, to the very
public area near the entrance where the Director's office was located. He
flushed as he entered the public space, but no one seemed to notice him
at all. He had placed the options in a bag, and entered Ms. Goudy's
office suite with them, where he announced he had a delivery she was
expecting. Her secretary simply announced Jimmie's arrival and signaled
him to go into the Director's office.
"Hello there," the Director greeted Jimmie, and signaled he should sit.
No reaction to his outfit, but the Director might have assumed he was not
on staff, even -- gulp -- that he was a girl.
"Ah, Ms. Butler, my boss asked me to follow up on your conversation, and
offer you some options in that regard. I found these three possibilities
that might suit." He took out the three sets of underwear and laid them
out on her desk.
The Director reassessed the situation quickly, registering that this was
one of her employees, that she seemed highly self-conscious -- probably
due to the extremely casual outfit for library work -- and finally that
she had a perfectly flat chest in "her" bra top. Huh, she had a cross-
dresser on her staff, but one who seemed highly uncomfortable about it.
She adopted her "best self" as an inclusive leader.
"This is very nice of you, and I can see that any of the three choices
would fit. Would A $25 donation be suitable? Which set do you recommend?"
Jimmie was in his element now, just like helping a customer at the shop.
"The Natori is a near-perfect match in color and material to the La Perla
bra you've chosen; I would go with that. And your suggested donation
exceeds what we were going to ask. Thank you."
The Director came back with "And might you be the young man Ms. Butler
told me deserves all the credit for this venture? How did you think of
it?"
Jimmie basked in this praise and, without thinking it through, responded
enthusiastically "I have a part-time job in a consignment shop that
handles these items, so I am familiar with the donations; in fact, the
owner asked me to pare back our inventory and it just came to me to
donate the excess stock to a Booster Day booth that would benefit our
Branch."
"If you share with me the name of the shop and, more important, your
name, I'll be sure to visit it for more bargains and to have your help
there too, just like now."
Jimmie hesitated a moment but then just plunged in "The shop in called
'Favorite Things' and is located across from the old Chrysler Building in
Bel Air. My name is Jimmie but, in the shop where I'm a sales associate,
I go by the name of 'Ginny'. But please don't use that name here."
"Of course, Jimmie, that's who you are at the library. If and when I make
it to your shop, and you fit me with high-end bras and panties, it's
'Ginny'. And remember Ginny, I'm a 34D and a size 7 in panties." Never
had Ms. Goudy imagined she would have such fun at work. Somehow, in the
future, she would work Jimmie into her orbit here at the library, if just
to admire his fashion choices.
And, when he rose to depart, she spotted the slight bulge in his leggings
-- glory be!!
