Part 4: Breaking Point
Rachel opened the door and entered, carrying the bags with her ??new
clothes. She tried her best not to reveal her apprehension when she
called, "I'm home!"
Uncle Craig and Aunt Mary appeared on the stairs leading to their
apartment, and freezed with a surprised look.
"Matt," Aunt Mary asked, "is that you?"
"Yes, it's me," she said.
They stared at her for a long, awkward moment before her uncle Craig
opened his mouth again.
"What are these clothes?" he asked, visibly confused.
"My old clothes don't fit anymore. I had to buy some new ones."
Once again, silence fell.
Her hands trembling nervously, Rachel began to fumble with the lock of her
room, and opened the door revealing that it was exactly in the same
condition as the night before, except for a wooden plank plugging the hole
in the ceiling. She put down the bags just next to the entrance and turned
back.
"Er... I think I'll start tidying up the room," she said. Uncle Craig gave
her an absent nod and Rachel closed the door behind her.
She drew in a long breath, relieved to have left behind the heavy mood
that reigned in the stairwell.
She changed into something more comfortable - tank top and skirt - and
began to take stock of the room's condition. The worst of the damage had
been suffered by the table and the cushion on which she was sitting the
previous night. They were heavily burned and she would have had to throw
them away.
The rest of the room, including her bed, was covered by a thin layer of
ash, probably the remains of several sheets of paper and part of the table
itself.
With a sigh, she grabbed a broom and started to clean up. Fortunately, the
damage was less than expected and after cleaning the bulk of the ash
Rachel realized with relief that the room was still habitable. As long as,
she thought, her aunt and uncle would allow her to live there now that her
Twisted nature was obvious.
She had just finished sweeping away the last remains of ash when the door
opened and her uncle came in, soon followed by her aunt.
"Matt, we need to talk," her uncle began, in a grave tone.
The three of them sat on some of the most clean chairs.
"Your uncle and I had been discussing this seriously," Aunt Mary
continued. "As you know, we are not allowed to have contact with people in
your... condition" she said. Despite her best attempt to be polite, the
last word betrayed a tone of contempt.
"If you still think about going to study in Spiral, we believe that this
might be the best idea," said her uncle.
Rachel felt her anger flare.
"You're... You're throwing me out!"
Aunt Mary looked down, but said nothing. Uncle Craig looked at his niece
with a stern look.
"You're an adult. We have brought you up in memory of your mother, but our
duty is done. You have good grades and you should be able to win a
scholarship for college. And even if you can't, the money from you
parents' life insurance should be enough to cover the expenses for some
time."
" I can't believe..." Rachel could already feel the tears gushing from her
eyes. After all the stress of her transformation this was the last straw.
"Matt..." said her aunt.
"Rachel," she cried, "my name is Rachel! Yes, I'm Twisted, and I'm proud
of it!"
Mary reacted as if she had just been slapped in the face.
"How dare you! The name of my grandmother to... to a..."
"A monster? Just like my father? He used to love me. He had always been
there for me whenever I needed!" She stood up, tears of rage on her face.
"What have you done for me? Did you ever worry about me when my parents
were alive? Did you ever really know my father? You took me in just
because I was underage and you were my closest living relatives. You
always treated me like an outcast, a monster. I wasn't even allowed to
live in your same home! Mom... She'd be ashamed of you!"
His uncle was on his feet immediately, his arm moved fast and a slap hit
Rachel on her left cheek. She let out a scream. Once again his uncle
raised his arm to strike at her, she looked in terror at his hand dropping
and...
Something inside her snapped, and his uncle's hand stopped, as if he had
hit an obstacle in midair. Rachel realized with amazement that a
shimmering wall of blue light was now encircling her. It was oval in shape
and surrounded her like a shell a few inches away from her body.
"What the... you... you witch!"
Rachel was literally terrified. She knew that this shield had to be her
Trick, but she also knew that her uncle would not like seeing it at work.
Then Uncle Craig let out a cry of frustration then walked with long
strides toward the door.
"I expect to see this room empty in a week."
Aunt Mary looked at her with a mixture of disgust and fear, before leaving
too.
And Rachel, finally alone, curled up on the ground in her bluish shell,
crying like a child.

"Mat ... Rachel?" Steve said opening the door. "You're a mess. What
happened?"
Rachel had walked up to Steve's house under a faint but persistent rain
that had soaked her hair turning it into a single mass. Her clothes were
wet too, and her eyes were still red from crying.
She entered the house and jumped at his neck, hugging him tightly. "My
uncle and aunt... they..." She could not continue, and started sobbing.
"Calm down, tell me what happened."
"They want to throw me out!" she finished, all in one breath, before
starting to cry again, leaning on Steve's shoulder.
He held her still, at the front door, thinking about how twenty-four hours
had been enough to turn his best friend into a girl in tears.
"Steve, who is it?" asked Chelsea, appearing from a door. Her eyes locked
on Rachel, and she ran to her.
"What happened? You're all wet... Come on, you can borrow some of my
clothes."
And so, for the second night in a row, Rachel found herself depending on
the Diamond's hospitality. Steve's parents were out for dinner together,
and the three of them ordered something to eat at a take-away. Rachel had
changed into dry clothes and while they waited for dinner, she calmed down
and told everything to her friends.
"So it looks like you really have a Trick after all. Do you think you can
show it to us?" asked Steve
Rachel focused, trying to find that mental switch that created her
protection, but try as she might she could not reach it.
"I don't know... I can't. Maybe it's not under my control."
Steve nodded, then took a step towards Rachel and punched her.
"Ow!" He cried, as his fist connected with the shimmering wall that had
suddenly appeared around Rachel. Chelsea cried in amazement.
"I'm all right," said Steve rubbing his hand. "That hurts!"
"I ... I do not understand how I did it... I mean..." Rachel muttered. "I
saw you attacking me and..."
"Looks like you figured out how to activate your Trick" said Chelsea. "You
can create your shield only when you feel threatened."
Steve came closer to Rachel again, and tried to touch the glowing shell.
"It's smooth. Smooth and firm..." he stated in amazement, running his
hands over it. He tried to push on the surface of the bubble and although
Rachel could sense some kind of pressure, Steve's hands didn't move.
Rachel reached out to touch the ball from the inside, and the sphere moved
with her arm, deforming to envelope it. "Wow," she said, moving her arm
around. She tried to push a chair, and she realized it was displaced by
the shell around her.
Finally, she once more looked for the mental switch commanding her Trick.
This time she found it easily and with a thought she flipped it: the
bubble dissolved into nothingness.
"This time I could control it. I... switched it off!" she said.
"Well... Your Trick might come in handy in the future. It will definitely
keep the bullies at bay," said Chelsea.
A moment later the doorbell rang, and after going to open it Steve came
back with three packs of hot ramen.
