Magic Anime Network: A Different Perspective
Derrick dragged his weary body into his apartment. He put his mail on the
kitchen table and started pulling out items from the fridge for a
sandwich. He had no interest in doing his daily chores. Not after the
rotten day he had just gone through at work. Instead he took his
sandwich, plopped himself in front of his computer and started making the
rounds of his favorite internet sites. Derrick was letting his thoughts
go dark. He definitely felt his age nowadays, each of his forty-five
years making his spirits sink more. He wondered when it had happened.
When had he crossed the line from young and spry, to some old guy? His
left hand started doodling a caricature of an old hermit-looking dude
with a long beard.
Suddenly an instant message popped up:

D-man-of-the-Hour: Just got off work. **Hangs himself**
SuperKewtie001: That bad huh?
D-man-of-the-Hour: You have no idea.
SuperKewtie001: I might be able to cheer you up.
D-man-of-the-Hour: I doubt it.
SuperKewtie001: Did you get a package today?
D-man-of-the-Hour: Yea, I put it on my table, why? Did you send it?

D-man-of-the-Hour: WOW! This thing reacts to my thoughts, what is this?
SuperKewtie001: What are you looking at?
D-man-of-the-Hour: Some beach, lots of good looking girls. This is a heck
of a cartoon simulation thing, what is this?
SuperKewtie001: Look along the shoreline. Find a beach house with a large
cat face on the roof.
D-man-of-the-Hour: Ok........found it, now what?
SuperKewtie001: Go inside.

Derrick's eyes went wide when the anime girl on his television turned
from her computer to him. She smiled coyly and called out. "Come on in
Derrick. This place is awesome!"
Derrick's mouth fell open; he turned to his keyboard to tell his friend
what just happened.
D-man-of-the-Hour: I'm impressed, how long did it take to program that? I
feel like she's actually talking to me.
"HEY!" the anime girl interrupted his typing. "Don't type, talk to me.
I'm right here."
Derrick turned and felt the hair rise on the nape of his neck. The girl
was up against the other side of his television screen. Something about
her looked like more than a simple animation. There was an unreal, yet
real quality about her that made him feel as though she was literally an
arms-length away. He approached his television and looked at her
practically nose-to-nose beyond his television screen.
She had brilliant golden hair, bright blue eyes. She wore a simple sun
dress with a light blue ocean pattern on it. She was skinny with that
extra tall look that one would see on an extra lanky character.
She smiled at him before jumping up suddenly with her arms out screaming.
"BOO!"
Derrick stumbled back into his coffee table but caught himself before he
could fall. She tracked him with her eyes and laughed at his clumsiness
and confusion.
"I said come in. You can walk through your television and join me. Just
come to me and concentrate," she said.
"Who..." Derrick asked knowing the answer.
"Its me, Cassie," she said smiling in a way that arched her eyes into
simple curved arches. "Y'know, your Super Kewtie Friend from online?"
"Its...really you?" he asked, approaching the television again.
"M-hmm." She nodded.
Derrick reached a hand out to touch her. The edges of his television
seemed to separate, giving his flat screen added depth. The effect was
like seeing the monitor zoom out in front of him, and yet not shrink with
distance. His peripheral vision was filled with rainbow hued
kaleidoscopic shapes. He stepped forward into this ever expanding magic
tunnel a part of him wondered how his 25 inch television could swallow
him up like this. His most direct thoughts were focused on moving through
the tunnel to the anime girl identifying herself as his friend.
Then his vision became engulfed completely with a swirling myriad of
colors. He felt an odd shifting within himself. He got a sense that he
was no longer completely the same as when he was in his room. He did not
need to walk anymore; his body was propelling itself forward as though
caught in an easy-going yet strong river current.
Then a hand grasped his and steadied him in a strange room.
He looked up into the eyes of anime Cassie. She was taller than him, and
had an amused smile on her face. Derrick wanted to ask her what was so
funny but he felt tired; Tired and sleepy. He moved to Cassie's desk
chair and sat in it.
Derrick waved his arms in front of his face. The hyper real color of his
arms seemed strange at first, as well as the three dimensional animated
world around him. He noted though, that the strangeness seemed to fall
away. The difference between his former reality and this unreality seemed
to fade and his mind unconsciously just accepted his current status as
real.
Cassie handed him a glass of water which he sipped slowly. He looked at
her reflection in the water in the cup. She was extra cute, he noted, but
very much in a woman-of-the-world way. He got a sense that she was aware
of her looks, and abilities and just what she could use them to get.
After sipping he looked at her reflection in the water again; As the
water rippled around, her reflection distorted into abstract shapes. As
though each time she had to be redrawn starting with basic geometric
shapes and having the details fill in. The effect was so quick though
that he didn't pay it much mind.
He looked back up at her. "I don't know..." he started then coughed...
His voice felt funny. "I don't know why but I feel really rundown. Does
coming here always do that to a person?
"No," she replied holding back a giggle. "Do you want to see what you
look like?"
Derrick nodded so Cassie led him to a hallway mirror.
Derrick stared hard at his own reflection...his animated reflection. It
was so different...and yet familiar. Finally he spoke.
"What the FUCK?"
Cassie burst out laughing, "I've never seen this happen before to a User.
This is hilarious...hang on, I'm going to get my camera."
Cassie dashed away leaving Derrick to look over his animated body. He
looked down his backside, and at his legs. He brushed his longer hair
away from his body and pulled on the three foot grey beard that now hung
from his chin.
Why the hell did he turn into such an ancient old man? He asked himself.
A flash of light blinded him for a moment and he turned to Cassie,
smiling from behind a camera. "Smile," she said and snapped a couple more
shots.
"Cut that out," Derrick said in a voice best suited for chasing pesky
kids away from front yards. "This isn't funny."
"Of course it is," Cassie said back. "Tell me, what were you thinking
about before I contacted you today?"
Derrick sighed and looked at his reflection. He saw tiredness in his own
eyes, one that betrayed a feeling that has been creeping up on him for
years. He looked at his wrinkled, crumpled hands. He was positive that if
he were not animated the hands would be afflicted with painful arthritis.
Slowly he straightened up as best he could, not enough to be as tall as
Cassie, but enough to make him feel more confident. "I was...am getting
old. Not this old of course, but, Damn it I'm 45 years old. I'm not a
young pup by any stretch of the imagination."
"You're only as old as you feel Derrick," Cassie said.
"So this cartoon world turns me into an old man because I feel like an
old man?" Derrick queried.
"Got it in one," Cassie said touching Derrick's nose. "Although I
wonder..." She put a finger to her lip and looked into the air with a
curious gleam in her eye.
"Wonder what?" Derrick asked.
Cassie smirked as she looked at Derrick out of the corner of her eye.
"This." She pulled her dress collar apart and bared her breasts for
Derrick to see. Though not huge, they were revealed to be larger than her
lanky form would have suggest, and they bounced a little once having been
freed from her restrictive shirt.
Derrick instinctively looked down and away, putting a hand up so he would
not see her in her provocative state.
"Aww, what are you doing that for?" Cassie said pushing out her lower lip
in a pouty manner.
"I oh, I didn't want to seem rude," Derrick said. "Why are you doing
that?"
Cassie pulled her collar closed, letting her top cover her again and
shrugged. "It's just that typically in anime, the little old man is the
most perverted character. I was testing to see if that held true in
you... obviously not. You can look now."
Derrick gingerly lowered his hand and looked at the now properly attired
Cassie. He then stood up straight before her again, at least as straight
as his bent posture would allow now.
"And you were hoping I'd be a perverted old man right now?" Derrick
asked.
"Oh...um." Cassie felt her face redden. "Not precisely, I just. Now that
I think about it, I think I might play that role someday."
"What role?" Derrick asked.
"Perverted old man...maybe really tiny too..." She said holding her hands
about a foot and a half apart to illustrate the size she was thinking. "I
could visit school dorms and steal panties from girls and get kicked
around like a football even." Cassie said tapping her fingers together
and chuckling nervously.
"Why the hell would you want to go through that?" Derrick asked.
"Because it sounds like a lot of fun," Cassie replied.
"Wait," Derrick said, his mind catching onto the implications of what
Cassie had said. "So I can turn into something else as well? I mean, I
can be younger or stronger or what not?"
"Of course," Cassie said happily. "The trick is, to concentrate on who
and what you want to be when you come through the portal...ere, your
television."
"What happens when I go back out? Am I going to be this old man?" Derrick
asked indicating his body.
"Um, no I..." Cassie bit her lip to think. "Look, maybe it will be easier
to show you. Call up your portal."
"What?"
"Picture your apartment, or house, picture your television," Cassie said.
"Ooookay," Derrick said, still a little lost. A 4x3 hole opened in mid-
air behind him. He felt the presence and turned around to see a floating
window back into his living room. He saw his coffee table and couch and
the damn floral print wallpaper that he never had got around to tearing
down.
"Oh."
"Now." Cassie grabbed one of his hands. "Let's go through together." She
led him into the portal and they both felt the sensation of being
grounded in reality again. For him a bit of relief came with it, for her,
the usual disappointment and sensation of realistic gravity taking hold,
but coupled with the excitement of going to Derrick's home for the first
time ever.
In a moment they were both standing in Derrick's living room, looking at
each other.
"Hi," Derrick said, offering a small smile to the real Cassie. A twenty-
three year old short woman, with long, if unwieldy brown hair and holding
a few more pounds on her than she would like to acknowledge.
"Hi," Cassie said back with a low breathy voice. She took in the real-
life Derrick; A tall man with dark brown hair with striking silver
accenting his temples. He is built strongly enough that he carries his
well-earned 45 years of age with ease. His eyes have a very soft edge to
them; they were eyes that anyone could find themselves confessing
anything too.
"I'm sorry my place is such a mess," Derrick said picking up a couple of
magazines that had been knocked off his coffee table.
Cassie looked around at the small apartment, it was well-cleaned and very
orderly; Only one or two items being out of place.
"Looks better than my place," she quipped, thinking of her clothing on
the floor, the stacks of anime and manga stacked along the walls and
leftover dishes on every flat table surface back at her home.
"So-" Derrick pointed at his television, currently a churning vortex of
color. "This is, ah, this is quite an amazing chat room cartoon...thing.
Is it virtual reality or..." Derrick put his hand up to his television
and felt the tugging sensation of the Magic Anime Network beckoning him
to come in again. He pulled his hand back looking at it. The tips of his
fingers had a slight glossy look to them but faded to its normal color
and texture. "...is it something more?"
Cassie had wandered away from Derrick. She found his computer station and
sat down at it. She blushed when she noticed that Derrick's wallpaper was
art he had drawn of her character. In a rather provocative pose. She
reddened a little bit, first at her being displayed there, then at the
discrepancy between her in-network self, and her unappealing real-world
self.
She was adept enough at searches that she easily found his portfolio.
Digital artwork that he has been working on for years and years. It was a
treat to see some of the work in an unfinished state. With skeletal
looking frames that would eventually become fully realized fantasy art.
"So do you do this for a living?" Cassie asked Derrick whom she had
sensed come up behind her.
"No, I never could break into the business; I work at a plant doing...
well a lot of stuff that drains me. It's not important really."
"It's important if it drains you," Cassie said. "That's energy you could
be putting into your art, this stuff is awesome, and you could be a guest
of honor at big conventions with work like this."
"I think those places would rather have someone more in their prime,"
Derrick said with a sigh.
"You're really stuck on age aren't you?" Cassie said. Then she smirked
evilly, turned around in her chair and in a blink of an eye pulled
Derrick's shirt out of his pants and planted a wet raspberry on his
stomach. "Ppppphhhhhhhhh!"
Derrick nearly fell backwards from surprise and the impromptu laugh he
gave in reaction to the stomach attack.
"What was that for?" Derrick said trying to wipe a large grin from his
face.
"Sometimes you just have to trust yourself to be as young as you feel,"
Cassie said. "Besides," she stood up and tapped his chest; "we may as
well get this relationship off to a flying start."
"Wait...what?" Derrick stuttered, "But we're not..."
"Have we or have we not been involved online for a year?" Cassie asked
pointedly. She took a step forward to accommodate the step Derrick had
taken aback.
"But that was role-playing; I didn't think we were..."
"And have we or have we not made pledges to each other as witnessed by
some of our online friends?" Cassie pressed in on Derrick who continued
to move back.
"Cassie, that isn't real, this is real," Derrick pointed to himself. "I'm
too old for you, someone who has her whole life ahead of her."
Cassie laughed, still pressing in on Derrick who continued to move back.
"That is just an excuse Demon-San" Derrick reddened at the use of one of
his online names. Cassie pressed her point, her tone switching slightly,
her voice starting to tremble. "Derrick, I'm not pretty enough for most
people, but you know who I am inside, we talk enough for me to be able to
tell that. I thought you at least could look past this," she said
indicating her body.
The last part caught Derrick even more off-guard, he had absolutely no
clue that Cassie had a body issue problem.
"You are beautiful," Derrick interjected, switching his stance to meet
hers. "You are so attractive and radiant and womanly and vivacious and
kind and and and..." he struggled for the words. "...just so young. If I
were only twenty years younger," he said, his hand brushing her cheek.
Cassie looked down and grinned maliciously. "Wish granted." She pushed
him in the chest. He suddenly felt the familiar sensation of being pulled
into the Magic Anime Network. Out of reflex he grabbed Cassie's hand and
the two of them found themselves falling, flying and shooting through the
colorful void as they transitioned from the real world to the world of
living Japanese Animation.
They landed together on the ground with a thud.
For a moment both of them just lay there. The impact not nearly as
draining as the intense moment they had just escaped from.
Then Derrick rolled over and got up to his knees. He flipped his hair out
of the way and looked over to Cassie to see how she fared in the
transition. The landing didn't take his breath away in the manner that
Cassie?s appearance did.
Cassie was a man.
Cassie moved and groaned. This was the most intense cross over from the
real world she had ever experienced. It had taken a drain even on her
unreal body. A body that felt much different than normal. She realized
that she didn't have her well defined anime-girl attributes; in fact she
felt positively....all self-reflection vanished when she looked up.
"Derrick?" she asked the woman in front of her.
"Cassie?" the woman who was now Derrick said back.
The man that Cassie had become, Derrick noted, was him; An anime version
of himself. Even a little glamorized. Tall, striking features, the silver
at the temples lending a very masculine and take charge look. It struck
Derrick then, that this is how Cassie perceived his real body. This is
what she saw when she looked at him. For the first time in a long time,
he didn't feel so old.
Cassie meanwhile, took in herself; The version of herself as conceived by
Derrick. Not the hyper sexualized image that he had drawn of her
character, not the overly reliable girl she had built of herself in the
Magic Anime Network. No, this was her real world body as Derrick saw it.
The curves she had despised since they started showing obnoxiously in
junior high, and would not shape up during her college years, the hair
that she always fussed with before all her disastrous dates, the face
that had the too flat nose. It was all there, but from how Derrick saw
it, it worked, it made a very appealing woman.
It took a few minutes of looking over each other before they turned their
attention to themselves. There was a mutual understanding that breached
speaking.
Derrick looked up into the eyes that Cassie always admired and felt the
warmth that had felt not only when she looked up at him, but when he
would comfort her on their long chat sessions.
Cassie put her now powerful hands on Derrick's shoulders and felt the
surge of protectiveness that Derrick had always let his emotions run on
when he had role played with her.
They hugged each other; feeling the familiarity of each other rushing
between them. They knew without speaking that this was a beginning of
something great.
