Jill was going to talk with her parents tomorrow, but did not want to
wait to tell them all about her evening. Even with wanting to see
their faces when they heard about her wonderful evening, Jill wanted to
share the details with them. This might have been the best night of
her life. Jill needed to gather herself, there was just so much to
tell them, and she did not know where to start. She finally came up
with the order and made the call.
Phil and Anita Bourque were expecting this call. Jill loved to share
everything with them as soon as she could. Jill's mom answered the
phone and loved hearing how excited and happy Jill was. At first Anita
thought the reaction was as over the top as Nicolas Cage's acting when
Jill said this might have been the best night of her life.
When Anita heard all of Jill's news, she realized her daughter was
being as reserved as a Colin Firth performance. This night was a night
where many of Jill's dreams came true. She was going to be a
bridesmaid, got a boyfriend, and had her first kiss goodnight. Anita
knew that Jill wanted all of what she got tonight and deserved them.
This would be good for Jill's emotional growth and self-esteem. Anita
knew Jill felt left out by not having those rites of passage which
everyone took for granted. Most people asked when they would happen
while Jill asked if they would happen.
Anita teared up when she heard Jill was going to be a bridesmaid. She
knew how important it was to Mikey to stand beside Mel instead of
Maryanne. Him offering to give that up for Jill showed how much Mikey
cared for her.
Knowing what Mikey gave up for Jill's happiness made Anita expect her
daughter's next announcement- Mikey was Jill's boyfriend. She knew
that those two were good for each other and that they will be happy
together. With Jill now having a boyfriend Anita knew the next bit of
news was the goodnight kiss. To Jill, a kiss goodnight was one of the
ultimate signs of people caring for another.
Then Jill told her mom that her eldest daughter was finally becoming a
woman. Anita's response was "No, you were already one, now a good man
sees it."
Those words filled Anita's eyes with tears. The heart-touched mother
knew it was her daughter's way of saying she could take care of
herself. Anita was worried about Jill being alone and lonely after she
and Phil passed away. Their other two children were always so busy
with trivial matters to make time to see Jill at the assisted living
home. All those recitals, practices and fundraisers were important,
but making each and every one was not critical.
Pam and Dylan loved their sister and Anita knew it. She just wished
that would finally quit giving lip service to one important lesson they
needed to learn. People make time for what is important in their
lives. If they do not, they run the risk of losing it. It was not
enough to have love for someone else and say it. People need to show
the love with actions. Small things like spending time with the other,
actually being in the moment when around the other. It was not enough
to be there only at a time of need. One needed to be there during the
everyday moments too.
Anita needed to get off the phone. She did not want her daughter to
worry about her, and Jill would if she heard Anita voice crack anymore.
Choking up from her daughter looking out for her, Anita asked Jill if
she wanted to speak with her father.

Even with his gown already picked out Mel spent his Sunday morning
looking at wedding gowns. One reason, it just felt nice being in his
silk nightgown and robe thinking about the different ways he pictured
his dream wedding. There was many facets to femininity and Mel knew
that not just one gown or one wedding would showcase it on a bride.
The gown the male bride picked out made him look and feel beautiful,
but it did not capture the essence of what he wanted to portray
standing in it.
Another reason for dreaming of what could be was it took his mind off
him doubting that he was doing the right thing, being dressed as the
bride. Even with Mel not having to hide how strong his feminine side
was anymore, he could not help but think he was making the wedding too
much about himself. Mel should be able to be himself, but did not want
to make the guests uncomfortable. This day was about the coming
together of two to make a family.
Maryanne came over to her Mellie Mel to see what he was looking up.
When Mel's fiancee saw wedding gowns on the screen, she said "You
picked out your gown last night."
"I know, but I am already having second thoughts about it. I do not
like how girly it is.
"Plus, maybe it will be better if you dress like the bride instead of
me? You saw how quick Max backed out of being a bridesmaid. Any
money, the other guys didn't just to avoid hurting my feelings.
"If my friends are not comfortable with the wedding party attire, how
do you think the guests will feel?"
"Honey, this is our wedding. Don't worry about how you're dressed will
make the guests feel. Those who are there for us will not care. But,
if you want to pass up having your dream wedding, I am fine with it."
"You are right honey. I am still shocked that my dad offered to pay
for the wedding like any other Father of the Bride!"
"So with that settled, close that page and come join me back in bed. I
want another rehearsal for our wedding night!"
"Hold on, I do want to show you one more gown. I think it is the one
for me."
Mel was as right as pizza toppings go on top of the cheese instead of
the bottom about the gown he showed Maryanne. This lace A-
Line/princess sleeveless sweetheart sweep train lace wedding gown
screamed Mel. The A-line/Princess cut gave the gown a classic elegance
while the open back added a hint of playfulness. The sweep train and
laced up back gave it a traditional feel, as the sweetheart neckline
and being sleeveless welcomed it to modern times.
"I love it honey!"
"Good, after our rehearsal, I'll call Max to get Rhoda's measurements
and then change my order."
After Maryanne and Mel basked in the glowing review they gave each
other's performance during the rehearsal, Mel got up to call Max. He
was heading down to Stunning Bridal and wanted Rhoda's measurements.
Hearing that Max was still going to be a bridesmaid made Mel once again
doubt his decision to follow his dream. The tone of Max's voice was
all he needed to hear to know the strife his having the wedding he
wanted was causing between his friends.
Mel told Max that he understood, and he was fine with having one less
bridesmaid. Max knew the only choice of action worse than being a
bridesmaid was to back out. He would not hear the end of it from
Rhoda. Mel was going to just tell Max he was not in the wedding party
anymore, but knew that Rhoda would not believe it was the bride's
decision. So, begrudgingly, he told Max he would just tell Ms. Francis
to use the sizes from Max's first fitting.

As Mel was window shopping on the net Emily was house hunting on it.
She knew it really just a fantasy, but it was fun and felt good. Even
with it being only a week, she saw a difference in Mikey. Her brother-
in-law was more confident, livelier, and happier than when he lived at
Golden Triangle. She knew it would be best for him not to go back to
any assisted living home. Yet she also knew he needed someone to watch
over him.
Emily also knew buying a duplex, for Mikey to live on the other side,
would also be good for her and Steve. He would be able to help them
when they had children. Mikey already told them he was planning on
being the best uncle he could. She knew that was true because she
could see the love he had for those unconceived children in his eyes.
Emily's plan of going to read the news on The Guardian website were
delayed when she saw the perfect duplex for what she envisioned. It
was asymmetrical in design; one side with three bedrooms and two baths,
the other with two bedrooms and one and a half bath. That duplex would
work out great, the bigger side was made for a family with kids and the
other was better suited for a single man like her brother-in-law.
It was in Upper St. Clair, where they already lived and wanted to raise
their family, and the golf course Mikey works. The yard was a half
acre, so would have plenty of space for their kids to play in. Even
with being in the suburbs, right behind the house a wooded area which
was part of a county park. That meant it will never be developed.
Her Snookums came over with a cup of coffee and asked her, "What are
you doing?"
"Nothing special, just daydreaming."
"About what"
"It's stupid and not part of our plans."
"Come on tell me, plans change all the time, and if you do not say it
then what you want can never become part of our plans."
"OK, looking at houses."
"We are thinking of buying a new home to raise our kids. We want more
space and our neighborhood not as congested as this one."
"It is a duplex."
"E, the neighbors would be even closer than we have now!"
Emily knew she had to take a little bit of control of this
conversation. One reason why her snookums wanted more space between
him and the neighbors was who they had now, the Kramers. Those two
were as loud as someone wearing a Hawaiian shirt and the other a lime
green. With playing their music loud, thinking that every 4th of the
month was when people should set off fireworks and burning the worst
smelling wood in their firepit every weekend, they were as respectful
to their neighbors as a Liverpool fan was to a visiting Man City fan.
"Hear me out, I already have someone in mind for the other half of the
duplex."
"You want to be a landlord?"
"Snookums, hear me out!
Yes, I do, for your brother. Before you say no, I think it will be
great for all of us. Mikey is so much happier out of that place. I
know he can live on his own with just a little help. We can give him
that help. It will actually just be part of when we spend time with
him. Plus, we would love it if one of our children's' uncles lived so
close.
What do you think?"
Steve leaned over and kissed his wife. "I love it. We will have to
ask Mikey also."
"Good, they are having an open house this afternoon."
Steve called Mikey in to see if he would like to become his brother's
next-door neighbor. The quick question become a little talk. Mikey
loved the idea of having a place of his own, so much so that he
actually wanted it to be his own. Mikey wanted to buy that half of the
duplex. Steve and Emily tried to talk him out of it because they
thought he could not afford it. Mikey could and once he told them how
much he made and how much he had in his bank account, they quickly
agreed. They knew him owning his home would be a huge part of him
feeling as independent as he could be.

Alan Wheaton's Monday was as bad as every cliche which people believed
about that day. Even with the day greeting him with rain and fog, that
didn't matter, because Alan did not know what was ahead for him, so he
greeted the miserable conditions with a smile. The foul weather put
him in good spirits because of his faith in the banal saying, April
showers bring May flowers. This rain was going to help make the
grounds of his assisted living complex be pristine. That will help
with the image which he wanted to maintain. He knew it was more
important to have people think Golden Triangle Assisted Living was
prestigious than actually work hard at being so.
Alan's day started to take a downturn when he stepped foot into Golden
Triangle. Elaine Maydak, the union rep, was waiting for him. She had
some papers in her hands and a smile on her face. That meant one
thing, she was giving him a grievance. This irked him because he had
bigger problems to deal with than whatever petty issue one of his
employees were complaining about. He gave her his standard response of
she would hear back from him within the allotted time. They both knew
that meant in two weeks.
By the time he was at his desk, Alan got over dealing with the nuisance
named Elaine, then he opened his email. Seeing the one from Ginger
Schmitt was the second downturn. Without even reading the subject or
opening it, he knew exactly what it was about. That Mr. Bourque
uplifted the ban on Mikey seeing his daughter. He shook his head,
Ginger should have called him about this instead of sending this email.
After reading and responding to his emails, Alan again found his good
mood. Then the third downturn of his day occurred. He read the
grievance which was handed to him for a laugh. Instead it brought dark
clouds from outside into his head. This was from Ginger about being
unfairly terminated. That was a lie in his eyes. Ginger should have
told him what was going on. To him it did not matter that he cut her
off and told her he did not want to hear what she had to say. She knew
he would have wanted to hear that. Now he was going to have to pay her
for the time off. What was unfair was Ginger was getting a paid
vacation from not doing her duty.
He soon calmed down by thinking that at least he could punish Hazel.
She should have read her emails before she called him. It did not
matter to him that she would have went against his policy of only when
a worker was finished doing their paperwork was when they were allowed
to open their emails. She did not have all the information when she
called him. Alan knew he could not do any formal punishment, but that
did not stop him from planning a talk with her and then making sure her
direct supervisor gives her all the bad jobs for the next month.
Thinking about how he was going to ensure that Hazel was as miserable
as he was feeling right then brightened his mood. This was short lived
and the fourth downturn of his day occurred. Those dark clouds which
were hanging over his day did a lighting strike on his mood when he
answered his phone. Mr. Bourque was on the other line.
Alan knew that Mr. Bourque was not going to listen to him when he found
out the call was about pulling Jill out. The reason of Alan not being
forthright about the wedding was an excuse to Alan. The fact all the
men in the wedding party were going to wear gowns was not an important
detail. What they were doing was wrong in the eyes of the Lord and
that should have been enough of a reason for Mr. Bourque.
Mr. Bourque pulling Jill out of Golden Triangle would not have been
bad, but he was on the board of directors. When the legal guardians of
the Golden Triangle's residents found this out it would tarnish its
shining reputation. Alan did not want to put the hard work in to
regain what he believed should not be lost.

Even with wanting to spend his Sunday in his man-cave with his two new
friends, Z-Man and Karp, Terry had to gather some information. Instead
of being in the safety of his den, the fox was on his way to see Kim.
Terry's only true friend from the old gang would be more than happy to
help. Kim was only in the wedding party to figure out how to get Steve
back. To Terry that had to be the reason.
Until last night he moved on from wanting to get revenge on his ex-
friends. They were not worth his time. Then he found out about Mel's
wedding and that got him. He and his friends drifted apart, but he
should have still been asked to be in the wedding party. Mel not
following through with basic protocol was not cool.
Terry knew he would have said no even before he found out about Mel
being the bride, he had better ways to spend his time than with those
losers. Then hearing his friends were going to wear gowns made it like
they were mocking how his wedding was almost ruined. Them agreeing to
Mel's fashion choice made Terry think that they were all in all it.
How could they have been so against being in drag 5 months ago, then
volunteer to do so?
Steve and the rest of the old gang being in cahoots with the other made
sense to Terry. He was the fox and it would have took a pack of hounds
to catch one. There was no way that Steve was clever enough to trap
Terry on his own. Now instead of gloating, the pack of hounds was
going to have to deal with a sly fox and his henchman.
On his way up to Kim's front door Terry felt like his old self. The
lesson of humility was gone and his old way of thinking was back. The
world and people were there for his amusement. It felt comforting to
have the natural order of him in control and calling the shots back.
Terry should have gotten a reality check when Kim opened the door.
Instead of being greeted with open arms, the look on Kim's face was not
unlike a teeneager who had to babysit their siblings on Friday night.
The fox stayed in his alternate reality by telling himself Kim's
distance from him was just from misplaced anger. Kim was not as
observant as Terry so his friend did not figure out yet everyone else
was in on the trap. Once Terry let Kim think he came to that
conclusion by himself, he would have his wingman back.
Terry put on the ruse of acting like he thought Kim's cold welcome was
from him catching his friend at an inconvenient time. Kim stayed as
leery of Terry as a cat was of a stranger offering food. He knew his
friend well enough to know that Terry would not just stop over to catch
up. Terry expected his friends to come to him, not the other way
around.
Seeing that Kim was not becoming like a flower to the sun and opening
up to him, Terry left after a couple of minutes of talking. He was
just buying time to regroup after this setback. Then his stalling for
time paid off- Lorene came in. Terry quickly jumped on the opportunity
of forcing those two to come over his place. Terry, with his insincere
smile, told Lorene an insincere tale about Beth was asking about Lorene
and lambasting him about never inviting those two over. That Beth
always felt the closest to her out of the girls.
This stroked Lorene's ego harder than a toddler did a cat. She fell
for those words and said that sometime soon they needed to get
together. Quickly, yet in a nonchalant manner, not to give away to
Lorene she was played, Terry said next week if we are free. Lorene
said yes.
Terry did not get the information he wanted, but knew it would soon be
his. Lorene will just tell Beth when those two are catching up, while
he was down in his man-cave with Kim. This would have the added bonus
that he was in his realm so he would strong enough to get Kim on his
side.

Kelly was not only a joker but also the most optimistic person his
friends knew. He went beyond the saying 'if life gives you lemons make
lemonade'. He added 'and if you don't like lemonade, just sell it to
buy root beer, everyone loves root beer'. This positive attitude was
exactly why Jessie invited him along to look at the storefront in the
South Side he was thinking of buying.
Jessie quitting his 9 to 5 job to open up a BBQ joint was a huge
decision for him and his wife. He knew that she would back his choice
where to open up their restaurant. Her faith in a man who never took
culinary classes or ran a business to do so gave him the strength to
try. Now he wanted to pay her back by being as sure as their love for
each other he had the right place.
Jessie knew that even with his reasoning of why he picked this place on
Carson Street was sound, without sounding as sound as why their
restaurant would succeed, his Rosie would be worried. It might have
came a little later in life than for most, but Jessie was finding his
own footing.
Kelly did not disappoint. He saw the plain black and white sign saying
"The Smoke House" on it as what Jessie did, a strength. They both knew
that for a business to be successful it needs to differentiate itself
from the others and this sign did so. In the sea of colorful signs of
the South Side, old school plain black and white would stick out.
Kelly knew that the sign would catch enough peoples attention to get
them to try it. Then what was the true difference of Jessie's eatery,
the best BBQ in keystone state, would having them coming back for more
and telling all their friends about it. Glitz might be able to get
people to come quicker, but the substance of the food was what always
made people come back. Sooner or later glitz will lose its shine as
high quality always will be in demand.
After Jessie took Kelly through the dining and kitchen area, they went
to the back. This grassy area was what sold Jessie on this being the
right place. He could have an outside BBQ pit here. He already
envisioned the shelter which would be over it to protect it from the
weather.
Kelly was not as versed in BBQ so he did not see the potential. Jessie
then explained what he saw and the illusion of reality was lifted for
Kelly to see the full potential of this back area.
Jessie made the off the cuff comment, "Just think, if Steve did not put
us in those gowns, I would have never even attempted to open up this
place."
"What?"
"Steve doing that to us helped me gain so much confidence."
"I don't understand."
"Kelly, I had to have the strength to go through with something which I
really did not want to. Then I had to face the fact of why I had to do
it. I did not stand up when we were doing something wrong. I was
paying for actions which I would have never done. I saw that me being
complacent with not standing up made me, and all of us, just as guilty
as Terry. I never want to be in the situation of not being strong
enough to do the right thing. Now, instead of doing what is safe and
never rocking the boat, I am taking chances if it is the right thing to
do. Following one of my dreams by opening up this restaurant is the
right thing."
What Kelly said next reaffirmed he held true his version of the saying
about if life giving you lemons. That situation was stressful and
almost ended the friendships he had with all his closest buddies. He
saw it being worth it now because it helped Jessie become such a better
person. "Then Steve putting us in those dresses was well worth it!"

Two weeks have passed since Terry and Beth had Kim and Lorene over and
the results were disappointing. The Fox did not get as much
information out of the visit as he anticipated. Kim was as forthcoming
to Terry's questions as someone who was forced by subpoena to testify
to Congress. Beth and Lorene talked mostly about Beth's wedding.
Terry did not give up on trying to find out more about Mel's upcoming
wedding. He could not understand why he was not freely given the
information by Mel. The fox did not know that Mel's parents told him
about how Terry shared with them about Mel being a crossdresser. After
two weeks of no progress from any of his so called friends, he was
about to find out why Mel did not ask him to be in the wedding party.
He made the mistake of calling Mel.
When Mel looked at the incoming call and saw it was Terry, all he could
think of was how full of himself the person on the other line was.
Here was a person who told Mel's deepest secret to his parents and he
thought that all would be fine between them. Terry did not think he
would have to deal with being the informant to Mel's parents because he
was arrogant enough to think that Ted and Shelley would not want to
hurt how Mel saw his friend.
Mel did not want to waste time on someone who was not a friend anymore.
The man who moved past the person he could not trust anymore also did
not want to deal with any more calls, so he answered the phone to tell
Terry not to call him and why.
"Terry, I don't care why you called, but want to let you know a couple
things. I know you told my parents I am a crossdresser. That was
wrong. Do not call me anymore I am done with you."
After saying his peace Mel hung up on Terry. The phone call being
brief was as satisfying as a well-prepared meal to Mel. Not wanting to
stay on and talk about why with Terry meant to Mel he was not in the
past. Mel has moved on from his friendship with Terry while still
acknowledging what his former friend did.
The phone call, to Terry, was as satisfying as a rice cake to someone
with a sweet tooth. Terry not being able to frame the conversation is
not how the call should have gone. How he was not able to at least get
a word in after 'hello' took him back to the calls from Steve. Having
the conversation dictated to him gave the dumbfounded man the same
powerless feeling he had as when he thought he was going to be walking
down the aisle in a wedding gown. Then a grin came across Terry's
face, he remembered he got his wedding how he wanted, so he should be
able to get his revenge.
