Mel went to sleep and swore he woke up six months later. To the man
who was wondering where the time went, it felt like it was only last
week that he'd picked out his wedding gown. There was no way that
today was when he and his wedding party were having their first dance
lesson. This meant that there was only four weeks until the wedding!
Life, for him, his lovely soon to be wife, and his friends, has been as
hectic as the traffic at the Arc De Triomphe roundabout for the last
six months. Mel knew it was only going to get more chaotic as his
nuptials came closer. That was true for even the most basic of
weddings, but Mel's was anything but basic. There was the fact that
the man was going to be dressed as the bride. That meant that many of
the people they were going to invite just happened to already have
plans for the wedding date even before they knew it.
Seeing how many people were backing out of the wedding gave Mel another
reason to rethink if he should follow his dream. The bickering which
had become a full scale fight between Max and Rhoda was giving the
bride-to-be cold feet about being the bride instead of the groom. Just
when he was about to give in to the pressure of being shunned by those
who were not close to him, Mel got some encouragement. This morale-
boosting came from an unlikely champion, his second cousin John Heenan.
Mel would have fingers left over if he counted on one hand how many
times he has seen John and would have gained another one if he only
counted the times they talked. Them not knowing each other and John
not being invited to the wedding did not stop him from reaching out to
Mel. John's son, Johnny, was a crossdresser, and just hearing about
the wedding helped him accept that he was in touch with his feminine
side.
Mel hearing about how following his dream was an inspiration to someone
he did not know gave him the determination to fight off the
reservations he had about being the bride. Mel was so touched by how
John's gesture of letting him know that he invited him and his family
to the wedding. John did not want to intrude on a special day, but Mel
was not going to take his declining coming.
John came around to saying yes when Mel explained that it would be an
honor for them to be there. That Mel knew how lonely Johnny must feel
as a teenage crossdresser and seeing the wedding would even be more
beneficial to him than just knowing about it. That Johnny could come
dressed would boost his confidence even more.
With the wedding seeming to not be as big as they first thought, Mel
and Maryanne set out to make some of her dreams about the perfect
wedding site come true. Maryanne wanted her wedding to be in the
country instead of the city. She just felt it would be more romantic
if the wedding was somewhere secluded. This made the wedding somewhat
of a destination one, and another reason it was anything but a normal
wedding.
Maryanne found the perfect place to host the wedding and the reception,
the Seven Stars Hotel, a quaint Victorian manor style hotel 50 miles
southwest of Pittsburgh. The location of the hotel was perfect, it was
in the little hamlet of Mill Run at the edge of Bear Run Nature
Reserve.
The hotel had the amenities to host the wedding and the reception. The
back garden of the hotel featured a gazebo which overlooks the
Youghiogheny River. This was made to host weddings. The hotel also
offered a ballroom which can seat over 150 while still having room for
a dance floor.
When Mel and Maryanne successfully booked their date, they also
reserved the entire hotel for the weekend. It was 25 rooms, but the
wedding party itself needed 11 of them. They figured that they could
find 14 other guests who would want to stay. Even if not, those two
thought it would be best if no strangers were around. They knew that
even with the bridal party being willing, the guys would be self-
conscious of strangers seeing them in gowns.

The bridesmaid who was going to be the most self-conscious was Max.
This wedding was making him tense, uneasy, nervous and edgy. Max
assumed the main cause of these feelings was how his wife, Rhoda, was
making the crossdressing aspect of the wedding a point of contention
between them. He made this bad assumption because he made the mistake
of seeing the symptoms of the issue as the cause.
If Max would have used his skills in troubleshooting an issue instead
of looking at the surface, he would have seen that Rhoda's issue with
him was that he became complacent in their relationship. If he knew
the issue, Max would have easily fixed it by agreeing to his wife's
suggestions. Rhoda would try to get Max to do some new or exciting
activity with her and he would always find a reason not to. They were
always just at the last moment and sounded more like a flight of fancy
just to do something than something she actually wanted to do.
Max and Rhoda were deeply in love and he took that they would always be
together for granted. Before Max said yes to being in a dress, Rhoda
saw her husband not wanting to do anything as him nesting in their
home. That he had entered into that phase of life and she was doing
her best to be on the same page as him.
Now with Max agreeing to wear a gown to a wedding for a friend made
Rhoda feel insecure about her husband's feelings for her. Rhoda could
not understand why her man was so willing to do something very
unorthodox for Mel, yet she could not even get him to try a new
restaurant. Feeling a little vulnerable made Rhoda joke about her
husband being a bridesmaid every time it was brought up. How defensive
Max got added to Rhoda's insecurities and put her on the defensive by
going on the offensive and joke more.
Each time the wedding was brought up Rhoda's jokes became a little more
venomous. This in turn caused Max to do the same. Not once did Max
even think of asking his wife why she lashing out. He assumed he
already knew that she just did not like him calling her out on being
cute about a sensitive subject. Rhoda also not once thought about
telling her husband that she wanted them to be more active in their
social life. She was scared of him saying no and then there would be
no chance of him saying yes the next time she asked.

Jessie was too busy with starting his BBQ joint, The Smokehouse, to
spend that much time thinking about the wedding. This new venture was
a huge risk, he needed and wanted it to succeed. He needed it to be
successful so he did not have to get back into the rat race and his
wife, Rosie, could join him quicker in running the restaurant. He
wanted The Smokehouse to flourish so his wife's faith in him would pay
off. She took a big risk in agreeing with them becoming entrepreneurs
and if this failed, her aspirations of starting a family would be
delayed even more.
Even with running a BBQ joint being more stressful and time consuming
than he thought it would, Jessie knew he would make that decision to
open it again. This was the first time in his adult life Jessie did
not feel like he was working at work. He was just living his life. He
loved his morning of starting the BBQ in the back and then slowly
cooking the day's menu. The only thing about running the restaurant
which brought him more joy than seeing a person take their first bite
of his BBQ was seeing that person come back a second time. Every time
his customers told him that he should bottle his sauces and dry rubs
made him more confident.
When he did have a free moment or Mel called him about the wedding,
Jessie could not believe that he once thought it was going to be
stressful to be in a gown. The man who was slowly gaining a loyal
clientele found himself looking forward to the weekend of the wedding.
It would be a nice getaway from his new home, The Smokehouse. It would
be nice to have getting a run in his stocking take the place of his
biggest worry of running a business.
Even with seeing how much her husband was loving his new career, Rosie
was happy that tonight was their first dance lesson. This meant that
Jessie would pull himself away from their business and have some
personal time. Even with putting long hours in, Rosie's loving husband
always made sure he had time to spend with her. He knew having success
would be no good if there was no one special to share it with. She
just wished that he would make time for his friends. The only time he
saw them was when they stopped in to get something to eat.

Out of all of Jessie's friends, Kim was the one who stopped into his
BBQ joint the most. He lived the closest to it and Kim loved that his
friends made sure to include BBQ styles from around the world. It was
hard for Kim to find any place near him that made a Galbi, a Korean BBQ
dish, which came close to his mom's. Kim's wife, Lorene, even got
Jessie to give her his recipe for it.
Kim and Lorene were not only spending the time before the wedding
eating out at Jessie's, they were also making the rounds to see their
other friends. He wanted to make up for the missed time with them from
his self-imposed exile. They were also enjoying this new phase of
their friendship. Instead of the guys being in a permanent state of
arrested development and reverting back to teenagers, they were being
adults. When they were together the conversations became less about
the perceived glory days of the past to the real glory days, the
present.
The day before the first dance lesson was the most glorious day of both
Kim's and Lorene's lives. That was the day that they found out that
she was pregnant. There have been many joys in both of their lives,
but they were as bright as a dim nightlight in lumens compared to the
blazing lighthouse of Lorene being with child. Both of them were
looking forward to the day where they finally get to meet the person
who owned the biggest portions of their hearts.
The new parents to be were also looking forward to sharing the news
with their friends. They were happy that it did not happen closer to
the wedding. There was no way they would want to try to take any of
the spotlight away from Mel and Maryanne on their big day. Yet Kim and
Lorene both knew that they would have to share the news right away.
They would not be able to contain what they saw as the best thing which
ever happened to them!

Kelly and Simone were the first couple, out of their friends, who Kim
and Lorene thought to share their news with. This was because two
months ago those two shared the same news with them. Even with Simone
being the pregnant one, it was Kelly who was glowing the most when they
announced their big news.
Kelly's childhood dream was to be a father. The man who was becoming
who he wanted could not think of a time where he did not admire his
father. He knew he was lucky growing up by having so many great role
models and wanted to pass along the good fortune to his offspring. He
also knew he had a great circle of friends who would be other great
role models for his children. He saw becoming a parent as the next
step in his life and was looking forward to all the good and bad which
came with it.
Thinking of being able to tell the corny Dad jokes to him was something
which was good and bad. He was going to love making everyone moan at
them and he knew his wife and friends were not looking forward to
hearing them.

Some more childhood dreams were being fulfilled over at the Hulls'
duplex. Steve was keeping his dream of being his brother's keeper. He
always wanted to be there for Mikey however he could. Mikey's
childhood dream of being as independent as possible was also coming
true. He had the social support to watch over him, but his brother and
sister-in-law made sure that he did everything he could. They watched
over him, not took over. Lastly, Emily had part of her extended family
close. She grew up in a three-generation household and knew how many
benefits came from family forming a closer bond.
Emily and Steve loved watching Mikey grow as a person. Even with
having his driver license, Mikey never owned a car until a couple of
months ago. The reason was he wanted to drive himself to work and not
depend on his brother to take him to the store. Before buying the
Impala, Mikey took some driving classes to get used to being back on
the road.
Mikey's relationship with Jill along with her as a person were also
growing. Those two spent almost every night together at his place and
on the weekend she would stay over. Jill moved out of Golden Triangle
Assisted Living and was now living with her parents until they found
the right place for her. There was a new factor which played on their
finding Jill's new home. She had a job. Not only did she get one, she
wanted it.
Jill got a job at first as a greeter at Target, then she wanted to push
herself to do better and became a cashier. Her manager was so proud of
Jill when she asserted herself to be able to take the test to be a
cashier and passed it. Jill's mom and dad were amazed at seeing their
child reaching her full potential. They did not know how much Jill had
in her because they sheltered her. They took the word of the
professionals instead of letting their child fail in trying to succeed.
Phil and Anita saw so many changes in her. Jill was more confident and
instead of seeing where she could fail, Jill looked at how she would
succeed. She became more outspoken in her views of the world. Lastly,
Jill was more interactive with her nieces and nephews. She felt more
like an Aunt because she could act more like one. She did not need to
depend on her allowance from her parents to buy them presents. She had
real world experiences to share with them.
Even with it being a Saturday evening Jill was home. It was the night
of their first dance lesson and she wanted Mikey to pick her up at
home. Her going to the dance lesson would be a great memory to share
with her mom and dad. Those two were happy that she was there because
they wanted to remind her to ask Mel and Maryanne if it was fine if
they attended the wedding ceremony. They wanted to see their daughter
up there shining as she was being and feeling beautiful.
Phil and Anita never got the chance to bring up the wedding. Jill beat
them to it. There was only one person she wanted to see her in that
gown more than her mom and dad; Mikey, and he was. She knew the day
was not about her, but being in the wedding was going to be even better
if the three most important people in her life was there to share it
with her.

Jessie and Rosie were the first of the wedding party to show up to
their first dance lesson. Jessie always gave himself more than enough
time when going somewhere for the first time. He was smart enough not
to pick the same studio where they took the forced lessons.
Mel and Maryanne pulled into the parking lot right after Jessie and his
wife. Their friends taking the time out of their busy schedules to
take these classes was touching to them. Even with the bridal dance
being something small, where most of the guests forget about after all
the weddings they attended, the soon to be newlyweds still wanted
theirs to be the best. This was good for all the guests would vividly
remember the dance. People tend to remember when they see a man in a
bridal gown with his friends in bridesmaid dresses being led by their
wives in tuxes onto the dance floor.
The rest of the bridal party showed up soon after. Kelly was doting
over his pregnant wife as the rest of the couples, other than Kim and
Lorene, mingled. Kim also stayed close to his wife. He wanted to be
next to her with everyone there. He did not want to wait one extra
second to tell his friends the joyous news.
Mikey and Jill were the last couple to arrive at the dance lesson.
They would have been sooner, but as always, when Mikey picked up Jill
he stopped in to say hi to Mr. and Ms. Bourque and to assure them their
daughter was in good hands. At first, Mikey dispelling any doubts was
adorable to them, but now those two saw his assertion as what it was, a
promise he was renewing that he would always do what was best for their
daughter. They knew it came from love and devotion and also made them
feel even more sure that having him in Jill's life was the best thing
ever.
Once the last dance pupils to get there said hi, in a sign of unity,
Kim grabbed Lorene's hand and she said; "Everyone, can I have your
attention!"
The group fell into silence and then the expecting mother continued
with her announcement: "I...I mean we, wanted to tell you all this
right away and call each of you, but with us meeting up this evening we
waited. We felt it was right for everyone to hear the news at once. I
am pregnant! Kim and I are going to have a baby!"
Mel and Maryanne were the first over to congratulate them. It was
their way to make sure that what deserved to be the epicenter of the
group's attention became so. They knew the news would be, but wanted
to make the gesture because even with joy on Lorene's face, they could
tell she was a little antsy. Kim's Yeobo did not want to make it seem
like she was trying to take away the spotlight from the wedding.
Jessie and Rosie were the next over. He suggested that they all came
down to his BBQ to celebrate the news. Then those two had a silent
conversation. Rosie gave the look that Jessie better not even think
about going to check up on kitchen. Jessie shook his head to confirm
that he would not.
The rest of the group got to Kim and Lorene as couples other than Max
and Rhoda. They did show up at the same time, but there was an
emotional space between them. The bickering started in the car on the
way down. Rhoda mentioned that she had lost 5 pounds and Max just gave
a "That's good" back. The half-hearted words of encouragement showed
Max was as engaged in the conversation as a geek's girlfriend was in a
discussion about the timeline discrepancies of the Marvel Cinematic
Universe. The reason for such a lackluster response was not that Max
was not proud of her. He was too lost in thought about not falling on
his ass tonight at the dance lesson.
Not feeling the support of her husband made Rhoda believe that he was
not impressed. She knew that 5 pounds was not that impressive, but she
was proud of how she did so. Instead of going on a diet which she
would quit when reaching her goals, Rhoda made lifestyle changes. Max
should have seen she was attacking this like an engineer and fixing the
root of the issue not the effects.
These changes in her lifestyle were little ones, like instead of
getting an iced frappuccino at Starbucks to start her day, Rhoda now
got a coffee with one sugar and a little cream. She loved the taste of
those iced frappuccinos, but knew they were really just adult
milkshakes. Instead of taking the elevator to her third floor office
she walked the stairs. Not only were those little changes helping her
lose weight but they were making her feel healthier.
Feeling more robust made it so Rhoda was ready to implement more
changes in her life. She was going to start going for walks and would
love Max to join her. She was as hesitant as a student who was not
sure of knowing the answer raising their hand in class bringing this up
to her husband. He never wanted to do anything new with her and him
saying no would be another sign that their love is not what used to be.
Wanting to get a reaction, any reaction out of her husband, and also
get a little laugh to feel better, Rhoda repeated herself, but added
"Maxine did you hear that I have lost 5 pounds?". Max was done playing
this silly game with Rhoda. He knew the best way to try to make her
quit was to just ignore what she just said.
Rhoda took Max not being egged on as a sign of apathy. That was not
good. She knew that contrary to what people believe that hate was not
the opposite of love, but apathy was. Rhoda thought about those jokes
and saw them as what they were. Her lashing out at her husband. After
Rhoda apologized and told him it would not happen again she stayed
quite the rest of the way to the dance lesson and the warring couple
both wondered what has happened between them.

The dance instructor, Dana Budai, was impressed with the guys. She was
also impressed with the ladies and their being game for the unorthodox
wedding, but not as much as the men. The members of Mel's bridal party
were able to put aside not only their male pride but also normal social
convention to make their friend's wedding as special as it could be.
If that was not enough, they all showed great coordination to be able
to dance in heels as well as they did. If she didn't know better, she
would have sworn they did this a couple of times before.
After the lesson the gang all went to Jessie's BBQ joint and there was
much laughing and talking. The guys were confident that their dancing
was not going to make them look like fools. Most of the couples were
easily able to switch on a note who was in the lead. These all paled
in comparison to the real reason of the celebratory mood; Lorene and
Simone being with child.
Everyone happy and having a good time made them overlook how withdrawn
Rhoda was. The fact that the rest of the couples here were all
entering a new spring in their relationships as she and Max were in
their last autumn together would not leave her mind. She did crack a
smile as she saw Max laughing it up with Kelly. What she wanted more
than spending the rest of her life with that man was him to be happy.
