told the receptionist, Sherri Lima.
"Steve, please call our Operating Director, Mr. Wheaton. That is what
he goes by. Also, we know you do not need our permission, Mr. Wheaton
just wants to talk with you about some changes in our policies. He'd
much rather do it right now for it will only take a minute."
Steve knew that the receptionist was stonewalling him. Sherri was
acting like a gatekeeper and not allowing him or his wife to get to
Mikey's room. He was also as positive as a motivational speaker that
there was no change in the assisted living facility's policies. This
had to do with the wedding. He knew this for Mikey backed out of being
one of Mel's bridesmaids. The only reason his brother would have done
so was because of pressure put on by this place.
Steve also was not going to let Sherri do the power play of having him
call Alan, Mr. Wheaton. If they want to have the formality of manager
of this place being called by his last name, then Steve wanted it also.
He knew the power dynamics of only one person using an honorific in
reference to the other and was not going to have it. Alan had no
authority when it came to Steve and Mikey's relationship.
"Sherri, and I told you to call me Mr. Hull. Tell Alan he can tell me
what he wants to after I see Mikey."
The receptionist was getting sick of placating Steve. She thought the
man was just being difficult. Sherri just wanted him to follow the
facility's rules. Calling her boss Mr Wheaton should not be that hard.
She did not understand that all Steve was doing was making sure they
were on equal footing and he was under no obligation to follow the
rules.
Sherri was glad to hear the door behind her open. It meant Mr. Wheaton
was going to take the trouble maker off her hands. "I am here now and
this will only take a minute Steve, Emily, please come with me to my
office."
"Alan, we can talk right here."
"Steve, it is Mr. Wheaton, and I'd much rather talk to you in my
office."
"Alan, I'd much rather talk about the policy changes right here."
Alan was not going to subject his employee to the deviant actions which
Steve had plan for Mikey. Alan felt like he had control of the
situation so there was no need for the cover story. Calling the lie a
cover story was Alan's way of staying pious when committing a sin. The
man who thought he had right on his side felt like he was in control
for he did put a stop to that disrespectful heathen from corrupting not
only his own brother but also another one of his residents, Jill
Bourque. Having full conviction that he was doing the right thing,
Alan said, "Steve, you know this is not about policy changes, so why
not come into my office."
"Emily, stay here and I will be right back."
Emily wanted to go in with her husband and find out what exactly this
man did to Mikey. Then make sure that man never did that to Mikey
again! She knew that her husband had that handled. She also knew that
it was for the best to stay out here. Maybe she could talk her way
past Sherri. Emily could tell that the receptionist was only following
orders. If the orders did not say not to block her, Emily might be
able to see Mikey. Making sure her brother-in-law was fine was more
important than getting the satisfaction of making sure no one messed
with her family.

Terry was a little disappointed that Kim turned down his invite to come
over on Saturday to watch some college football, but it did not matter.
Z-Man and Karp would be there. Z-Man was Zaraly Balinski and Karp was
Norman Karpinski, two of Terry's new friends. The husbands of the
friends of Beth, Terry's wife, got along with him better than peanut
butter and jelly.
Terry also knew that Kim was not being forward with why he said no.
The reason Kim gave was as fuzzy as a nearsighted person's vision.
There would have been more detail if Kim had said he had to see a man
about a dog. Whatever Kim did not want him to know was not Terry's
concern. The man whose invite was as solidly rejected as a brickhouse
would leave it to Kim to call him when his friend wanted to hang out
again.
Kim was as clear as fog with Terry for he was going to be trying on
dresses again at Stunning Bridal. Mel's flower boy knew that if Terry
found out about Mel's wedding, the man who wanted revenge would do his
best to wreck it with some childish prank. He saw the damage that
revenge and pranks did to both the people who were giving and receiving
it and wanted nothing to do with it ever again. The days of making a
new story which ended with 'it seemed like a good idea at the time' was
long past Kim and he did not want to help make another one.
Even with not liking that he was going to be on the mail list for a
bridal shop, Kim was looking forward to the dress fitting. It was
going to make two of his closest friends happy. Mel, for he was
getting closer to fulfilling his dreams of being a bride, and Mikey for
he was spending time with his childhood friends.
The best thing about Mikey being in the wedding was the reconnecting
that was being done between him and their group of childhood friends.
After high school, with everyone but Mikey going to college, the group
started to separate from him. Kim knew the reason why was that
everyone in the group thought that they outgrew Mikey. What made Kim
the saddest about that fact was Mikey knew too. It came from elitism
from everyone involved. The co-eds thought that they were above
everyone who did not go on to get a higher education and Mikey thought
he was beneath the boys chasing their bachelors because according to
society, he was not capable of bettering himself.
The biggest reason the group did not reconnect with Mikey after they
found out the notion was as true as brown eggs are better for you than
white eggs was because of shame. The group felt little for they looked
down on someone who was dear to them. Mikey felt ashamed for he
allowed himself to think too little of himself. Now they did not have
to worry about pride being in the way, it was natural for them to be
hanging out more for the wedding preparations.

Steve was barely able to be polite, so there was no way he was going to
be cordial and accept Alan Wheaton's attempts at being amiable by
accepting the offering of a seat and drink. The man who was going to
stay standing could see past the plastic smile to the contempt Alan had
for him. Steve was not going to play social pantomime to try to cover
the unpleasant nature of the upcoming discussion they were going to
have.
"Alan I am fine standing here, you said this was only going to take a
minute."
"Steve, you know I go by Mr. Wheaton. You also know that this will be
quick only if you agree with me, but by how rude you are being I highly
doubt it."
"Alan, when you told me you go by Mr. Wheaton, I told you to call me
Mr. Hull."
"Steve, I would call you Mr. Hull but it is against the assisted living
facility's policy to do so to a resident's family member."
Steve's soul was like cheese and and those words were like a grater.
He knew that policy was made by Alan and was only followed when the
director of operations wanted to show authority to people.
"Well, Alan, it is against my policy to extend the same courtesy which
others are not giving me.
I do not want to waste my time so just tell me what makes you think you
can make my brother back out of being in our friend's wedding."
Alan's plastic smile got weaker when Steve brought up the true topic of
the meeting. It sickened him to even think of a man in a dress. That
was against God's law. "I did no such thing, but I am happy that you
brought up the wedding. You have no right to do what you are doing to
your brother.
"I have called social services and they are opening up a case on you."
Alan was telling the truth, he did nothing directly to Mikey. The man
who was going to stop the travesty of one of his residents being
humiliated did however inform Jill Bourque's parents about how their
daughter's escort to the wedding was going to be dressed. They forbid
her from talking with that pervert. Jill not talking or even looking
at Mikey was the reason he rescinded being in the wedding party.
Steve knew that even with Alan telling the truth, the man was being as
honest as a fisherman. Before this issue came up Steve could bear
putting up with the puritan operation. It never affected Mikey and his
brother was happy standing there. Also, Wheaton House was always top
in the ranking of assisted living facilities. The cost of having to
deal with the backward thinking was worth the benefits.
"Alan you should have talked with me before you called social services.
I have no idea what you think is going on, but Mikey willingly agreed
to being in the wedding."
"You know that Mikey cannot make that can of decision. No man would
agree to be in a dress."
Saying that his brother did not have the mental capabilities was the
last blow to the wall which was holding Steve back from telling Alan
what he really thought of him.
"My brother CAN make his own decisions. He just needs a little help
with the day to day things. If he could not, he would not be in
Wheaton House or be able to hold down a full-time job.
"Second, a man would agree to be in a dress. I did. We are doing this
for our friend."
"You know that Mikey cannot stand up against peer pressure. He will do
whatever the group does or tells him."
Alan's last statement made Steve laugh. Anyone who said that Mikey
does anything to fit in does not know Mikey.
"Don't laugh this is serious. You already did so much emotional damage
to your brother. That is why he is not going to wedding. He knows
what you are forcing him to do is wrong."
"You are right, this is serious. I do not have time to deal with you.
I will be taking my brother with me."
Alan only said bye. The front desk and orderlies were under strict
orders not to let Mikey leave with his brother. Then if Steve would
not leave without seeing his brother, Alan would have no issue calling
the police. With Mikey not being there to talk with the police they
would take Alan's word over Steve's. Alan knew he would not be lying
when he said that Mikey did not want to see his brother. Right then

Rhonda was not happy that her husband would not change his plans on
Saturday night. Her friend Barbara Ann and husband Brian Jardine got
four tickets to see Hamilton at the Benedum Center. The seats were not
just any seats. They were in the mezzanine level. In the theater
world, that section was called the royal circle, the best seats to see
a musical. Rhonda wanted to tell everyone at work about enjoying the
best things in life with the best thing which ever happened to her,
Max.
"Come on dear you don't have to go to that dress fitting. It is
Hamilton."
"Rhonda, it is not about if I have to go or not. I made the
commitment. You do not need me to go to Hamilton with you."
"I know that, but it will be hard for me to find someone to take that
second ticket and Heather and Brian will just give the tickets to
someone else."
"The reason you cannot find someone else is that they have plans, like
I do."
"Yeah but the reason is not something so stupid as yours."
"Being part of Mel's wedding is not stupid."
"It is when the guys are the bridesmaids. You are taking this too
serious, never laughing when I am joking around about you being in a
gown.
Now just tell Mel to get you a size 18 and enjoy a night of culture
with me."
"Rhonda I am a size 12, plus you know those gowns have to be altered."
Max's wife could not believe that her husband was a smaller dress size
than her. Max was lean but there was no way he was smaller than her.
"No you are not."
"I wear 32x34 jeans Rhonda."
"Yeah right bitch."
Rhonda used bitch to show her disbelief in her husband. If she was not
joking around about Mel's wedding he would have taken it how it was
meant. Instead, her husband took it as yet another swipe at his
manhood, only this time maliciously. "Quit that right now Rhonda."
Rhonda forgot that she uttered bitch asked, "What?"
"Mocking my manhood for I am going to do something which means a lot
for a friend."
"No, I didn't. I just expressed that I did not believe you."
"You called me a bitch."
"I did not."
"Don't lie to me Rhonda."
Rhonda not remembering saying bitch seemed like a weak attempt of a
denial to Max. To him that cover up was worse than name calling.
"I am not lying to you, but you are acting like a bitch now. Trying to
start a fight so you can feel good about playing dress up with Mel,
instead of taking your wife out on a nice night on the town."
Max gave her one mulligan on calling him a bitch, he would not give her
a second. He knew exactly where to go to make his wife quit this fight
and went there. "Instead of being worried about going to out on the
town you should worry about going to the gym."

Jessie did a quick spin around when Rosie called for her husband. How
graceful his turn was made the man in high heels proud of himself.
That pride could be heard in Jessie's voice when he responded with
"Coming sugar!" Rosie heard quick tapping on the floor coming towards
her and knew exactly why Jessie sounded ecstatic being called for.
Jessie wanted to be the best bridesmaid he could. He did not want to
let his friend Mel down. He knew how important a wedding day was to a
bride. Jessie did not want to ruin it by stumbling into the wedding
cake. The man who was finding faith in himself also liked how it felt
doing this good. It really helped his confidence.
Rosie knew the best way to support her man on his endeavor to be the
best at anything he did was not make a big deal about it, and other
than the little smile of approval, did not act like she noticed Jessie
in heels. It was understandable that telling a man he is walking great
in heels or is getting better at putting on makeup can do more harm
than good to his confidence. Even with it being a one time event,
those kinds of compliments can come off as questioning Jessie's
manhood.
Rosie was more than a little impressed with what happened next. She
asked her man to show her where the extra light bulbs were, and
instead, he got them and changed the ceiling light. How quick and
natural he went up that ladder in those heels was no small feat. It
did help that Jessie did have small feet in maintaining his balance on
the rungs.
After doing the impromptu household chore, Jessie and Rosie had a
little chat about the wedding. Rosie was wondering how they were going
to handle the bridal dance and wanted to broach the subject with the
deft touch a Three Card Monte hustler. "Sweetie, did Mel talk any
about the reception?"
"Yes, sugar. It is going to be buffet style. He wants the wedding to
have as informal of a feel that it can."
Rosie liked the sound of it being as informal as possible. That meant
there will be a cookie table out for the guests to snack on before the
bride and groom showed up. Rosie did not care that she was being a
groomswoman, she was going to make her snicker-doodles for the table.
It was an excuse to make and eat them.
Also, with them not aiming for the most formal wedding it meant that
the DJ will of course play the Hokey Pokey and Chicken Dance Song.
Only some of the black-tie weddings found those two songs not fitting
for the reception. She loved to be out on the floor having fun doing
those silly dances and also loved to see the smiles on the kids' faces.
"Good, I love doing the Hokey Pokey!"
"Hey sugar we should take some dancing lessons. You are going to have
to be able to lead me during the bridal party dance."
"Sweetie, you are the man, even if you will be in the gown. You will
lead."
"No, this is Mel's wedding and I will not be leading you when he has
Maryanne leading him."
"I'd much rather have you lead. I love how you hold me when we dance."
"Mel should have two bridal dances, one where the ladies lead and the
other where the men lead. It would be more fitting, for it will show
that they are entering the marriage as true equals."
Rosie loved that idea. She would get to feel the firm grasp of her man
while they dance and Mel will get the dance he wanted. "You should
suggest that to him."
"Really?"
"Yes, sugar. It is a great idea. I know they would both love it and
the worse which could happen is Mel says no."
Even if Mel would be against this perfect way to express how the union
between he and his groom were going to be, Rosie knew he would say yes.
Mel was getting a lot out of his friends by them being his bridal
party. The bride to be was the type of person who wanted to be able to
accommodate those who were accommodating him. Plus, it would be longer
in the spotlight for Mel, and she knew Mel wanted that!
Jessie gave his supportive wife a kiss and said, "I will, also I will
call the guys to see if they want to take group lessons. Love you
sweetie!"
Rosie was happy that her man was excited about making sure the wedding
was more than what Mel dreamt of. Jessie could tell his wife was
pleased by the tone of her voice when she said, "And I love you, my
sugar man!"

Steve came out of Alan's office into the lobby looking for his wife,
they were going to Mikey's room to get him out of here. The only
person in the entrance area was one of the social workers, Ginger
Schmidt, behind the receptionist desk. The man who thought that
Sisyphus had an easier task than him dealing with Sherri and Alan was
relieved to see someone sensible. Sherri's relief was one of Mikey's
favorite workers here for she treated the residents with respect. She
also knew all about their personal lives.
"Ginger do you know where my wife is?"
"Yes Mr. Hull, I told Mrs. Hull to leave. She is out in the car
waiting for you. I suggest you go to her right now."
Steve could not believe that Ginger became so distant. It had to be
she disapproved of the wedding.
"I will after I get my brother."
"Your brother is not here Mr. Hull, he went out to eat at Amel's. Like
I said, your wife is waiting for you, I suggest you go to her right
now."
Steve was about to call Ginger out on giving him the run around, but he
saw her wink. The lady behind the desk knew that Steve was the only
person who Mikey would go to Amel's with. That was their thing. She
has to be trying to tell him the best course of action was to leave.
Ginger was helping them despite the orders from upper management not to
do so. Steve wanted to hug and kiss her but did not want to
accidentally blow Ginger's cover story. Instead he hoped that she knew
he was not irate when acted so to keep up the appearance of him being
mad." Fine, I will be leaving. I will be back for my brother later."
Steve got out to the parking lot and saw a couple of strange sights,
his wife in the driver seat of their running car right at the entrance,
and Mikey in the backseat with his head down. Emily found driving
tedious and Mikey was always happy to go out with them. The strange
sight of Emily having the car ready to go made sense. They were doing
nothing wrong but did not want to have to fight with Alan Wheaton. He
knew that Mikey was upset, but still going out and doing one of
spending time with his brother and sister-in-law usually got Steve's
brother in a good mood.
Steve got into the car and said, "Home, honey."
Mikey said, "No, we are going to Amel's. That is the only reason I am
came. Then back here, I want to go back to lying down."
The last three days all Mikey did after work was take a shower to get
the golf course grime off of his body, then lie down on his bed. He
had no energy and just wanted to be left alone. He also knew watching
his favorite sitcoms would not make him laugh. Plus, even if they did,
it took too much effort for him to stay vertical and watch TV. It took
too much effort for him to do anything beyond the bare minimum.
Steve reassured his brother that they will follow his wishes. "Then
Amel's it is, and we will bring you back afterwards if you still want
to.
"Mikey, what is up with you backing out of Mel's wedding? You were so
happy to be in it."
Mikey said nothing. The man with a broken heart did not want to talk
about the reason why he did not want to be in the wedding. Jill
Bourque, his plus one for the wedding, just quit talking to him a
couple of days ago. He was told by Hazel Nguyen, a worker at the
assisted living facility, the reason was for Mikey was going to dress
like a woman, and she did not like men who wore dresses. The real
reason was that her boss, Alan, called Mr. and Mrs. Bourque and told
them how Mikey's brother was pulling a cruel prank on those two, having
his own brother dress like a woman while Jill was his date. The
protective parents told Mr. Wheaton that they do not want Mikey to have
any contact with Jill.
Alan made sure that his client's wishes were fulfilled by informing
Jill that if she was caught talking with Mikey, he would have no choice
but to evict Mikey. It hurt Jill not to be able to talk to her special
friend, the man who put a smile on her face just by her seeing him, but
Jill agreed to do so. Jill knew it would hurt more if she could never
see him again.
Mikey did not want anything to do with what caused his friend to turn
her back on him. He did not agree with why she quit talking to him,
but Mikey would not wear a dress to keep Jill's friendship. To Mikey,
Jill's friendship was more important than standing next to Mel. He
started to doubt if wearing a dress was right for any man. He saw how
Hazel disapproved when she heard about it. On TV, many times being a
TV was the butt of the joke. It confused him for he knew it was only
clothes and made Mel happy. Mikey could not understand how someone
doing something which did not hurt anyone could be bad.
On their way to the restaurant, Emily filled Steve in on why Mikey
backed out. Steve made a mental note that he will have to do something
nice for that lady who helped get Mikey out and told them why Mikey
quit the bridal party and was so depressed. Steve also knew he had to
try to get Mr. and Mrs. Bourque to change their minds about the
wedding.
After hearing the story, Steve said, "Mikey, if you come to my house
and stay for a couple of days, I think I can get Jill to come to the
wedding with you being in it."
"No, she doesn't like men in dresses."
Emily asked, "Did she tell you that?"
"No, Hazel did."
Emily said, "Ginger told me a different story, and I believe her over
Hazel. Hazel is the one who does not like men in dresses."
To Mikey the facts he knew backed up what Hazel said, but at the same
time he knew that Ginger and his sister-in-law would not lie to him.
"Why would Hazel lie?"
"For she does not want to see you in a dress."
Mikey took what Emily said too literal, "She was not going to."
Emily smiled, for Mikey was right, that lady was not going to see it so
that was yet another reason she should not care. "Mikey, she doesn't
want it to happen. She is a neb nose and worries too much about what
other people do."
What Emily said made sense to Mikey. Jill was so happy to be going to
the wedding with him even after she found out he would be in a dress.
"So, Jill is not talking to me for she is not allowed to?"
Steve said, "Yes, and I will do my best to make it so she can talk to
you and come to the wedding. I just need you to stay with us for a
couple of days. I will go pick up what you need after we eat.
"Come on, it will be great for us to spend more time together. "
"Yes, it will. If you can't do it Steve, can we find me another place
to live."
Steve was already planning on trying to get Mikey to move from that
place and just said, "If that is what you want."

Mel and Maryanne sat down to a great dinner she'd made. This was their
favorite time of the day because they shared the events of the day and
what they want in the future with each other. Mel started the
conversation for he so wanted to share the suggestions Jessie had for
their wedding reception.
"Sweetums, Jessie called and had a couple of great suggestions for our
wedding. He wants to try to get the entire wedding party to take
dancing lessons together, and also our bridal dance to have two songs.
One where the bridesmaids will lead and the other where the groomswomen
will lead."
"They are both great ideas, but I do not know if everyone will be for
the dancing lessons. The wedding is not as important to them as it is
to us. Our friends do not have the time to put into making sure each
detail is perfect."
Maryanne just wanted to make sure that her soon to be husband did not
accidentally become a bridezilla. She did not want the group which was
reuniting to get any undue strain to cause friction to stop the
process. It would be sad if the group which cared so much about each
other would not get back to having the tight bond over something
trivial like the bridal dance.
"Oh I know dear. That is why I put more thought into it. We will have
four sessions and make sure that it is an open invite to come if they
like. So I will set up the lessons after dinner and call Jessie it is
a go."
"You should tell everyone right away, not just Jessie."
Mel so wanted to tell everyone, but he knew that Jessie had ownership
of the suggestion. He wanted his excited friend to take the lead
because he knew Jessie wanted to. "Sweetums, Jessie almost called them
before clearing it with me. He wants to take charge of this. Plus, no
one will feel pressure of having to do the lessons if Jessie if the
request is coming from another member of the bridal party instead of me
or you."
Hearing why Mel was letting Jessie do all the legwork on the dance
lessons was a relief to Maryanne. Mel was not becoming too self-
absorbed about the wedding. "Good, now let me tell you about the
interview I had at the bank today."
