The shock from Melody's question and Steve's response made everyone at
the BBQ overlook an important fact which should have made Mel being a
bride not possible. Mel's parents would disown him if he paraded
himself in a bridal dress at his own wedding. Well, what they thought
was an important fact was not.
Mel's parents, Theodore and Michelle "Shelley" Blake already knew and
accepted their only son's feminine side when Melody was forced out of
the closet by his ex-friend, Terry. After Terry's wedding, he and
most of his friends were going their separate ways. They found out
they outgrew him and their rejection of him hurt Terry. The spurned
friend wanted to make those who turned their back on him feel his
pain.
Even with wanting to get them all back, he knew one was untouchable,
Steve. Terry found his foil, the hound, had more resolve then he had.
He knew that Steve would just outdo whatever payback he came up with.
The same did not hold true with the others. The first person he
targeted was Mel. Terry put that payback bullseye on him for how
unstable Mel was acting while Steve was enacting his revenge. The Fox
was acting like a jackal, going after the weak.
During his focus on his first victim, Terry figured out Mel's secret,
he was a crossdresser. It had to be true, because it perfectly
explained the tattoo Mel got. Him liking to wear women's clothing also
made sense. Why else would Mel be as comfortable as a dog sleeping on
a couch when in a dress. Knowing Mel's taste in clothing was taboo
made retribution was so easy, call Mel's parents. They would disown
him. Terry was feeling better about himself as he dialed the number.
Things were going back to normal, with him on top. He was highly
disappointed when he got a matter of fact 'Yeah?' from Mel's dad.
Instead of driving the parents away from their son, the secret being
out in the open made them closer. Ted and Shelley already knew. They
never shared the fact they knew because it was a tough subject to
bring up and there was no reason to inform their son. They knew the
stigma which came with his preference in clothes and did not want him
to believe they thought less of him.
After Terry's call they had good reason to tell their son. Mel needed
to know that they would support him and to look out for Terry trying
to ruin his social life. Having a talk to make sure their son knew
what he did in his personal life did not matter was a talk which
should be face to face, so they did not wait for Mel to visit. The
loving parents took the initiative, they went to his house later that
day.
Mel answered his doorbell and was as pleasantly surprised as a person
who got an extra buffalo wing on their appetizer plate to see his mom
and dad. They would stop by on the spur of the moment, but usually
called to say they were in the neighborhood. Shelley was also going
to use this visit to harp a little on her son about not bringing his
new lady friend over to meet his parents. Mel figured that was the
reason for the visit and promised them next weekend he and Maryanne
would come over for dinner.
He knew it was time, the young Blake wanted to it to be perfect. He
knew that one day they would be calling Maryanne daughter. Those two
were not engaged, nor even living together yet, but Mel just knew.
His mom told him he would know when he met the right girl.
As they sat down to the coffee Mel served, Ted just got to the point,
"Mel, Terry knows you are a crossdresser."
Mel turned as white as the wedding gown Terry never wore, and said "He
is lying!"
The young man was hurt that he felt like he had to deny who he was to
his parents. They were socialites in a socially conservative town.
He knew his mom worried about keeping up appearances and that would be
the main reason she objected. Her worrying about what others thought
made Shelly scoff at her son when the junior Blake told her he wanted
to be happy when he grew up. Her reply was, "My dear baby boy, that
is just plain silly, I can't tell my friends you will be happy as a
career."
It was time for Shelley to make her son pleasantly surprised again,
"My dear baby boy, don't be silly, we have known you crossdressed,
that is the correct term right, for a long time."
It was true that Shelley was a little concerned about keeping up
appearances. That superficiality was just part of her social
structure. Most of her friendships were as real as fake plastic trees
and she knew it. Even with needing to look good to keep a high social
standing her baby boy's happiness was more important. Mel took her
response as scoffing, but it was not. She dismissed the answer in a
playful manner for how cute it was. Also, how from the mouth of the
young came the truth. Her son took the question about his career to
be about what was really important, himself.
Mel was trying to figure out how they knew for so long and why they
did not say anything. They knew for so long because he was not good
as a teenager at hiding his stash of clothes. Mel was about as sneaky
as an elephant hiding behind the only tree on a plain, playing hide
and go seek. His mom and dad would find panties Mel left behind in
the dryer. There was the 5-7-9 shopping bags in the garbage.
Mel went into a shell, he was so ashamed at the moment. The good son
felt that just by being himself that he let his parents down. He
mumbled, "I am sorry. I will quit."
Ted did not like see his son as weak and vulnerable as an orphaned
newborn. "You will do no such thing unless you want to for yourself.
We just told you so you are not surprised with your friends knowing.
I hope Terry is the only one of them who let you down about this."
Shelly hugged her son, she saw that he needed to feel close to them.
"I bet you are beautiful dressed up, and I would love to see you that
way. That is, of course, if you want to share that side of yourself
with us."
A little strength returned to Mel's voice. His parents were saying
the right words and he wanted to give them a chance to back them up.
"I do."
Ted was a good father, he was just not the touchy-feely type. The man
who wanted to show support did so with a question as delicate as a
blow from a mallet. "Are you transgender?"
Even with Mel knowing his father's question was not asked in a
judgmental manner, Mel still got as defensive as guard on the
watchtower seeing an approaching hoard. "No! It is just I am more
comfortable in those clothes. I love being a man. I am a man!"
Ted said okay, and Mel repeated that he was a man. While Ted was
trying to find the words to get his foot which he just put in his
mouth out, Mel's supportive mom said, "We know son. Your dad just was
trying to show we will support you no matter what."
Sounding as sure of himself as someone who woke up in a stranger's
house after three strange days, Mel asked, "No matter what?" Both Ted
and Shelley in unison said, "No matter what." The quickness of his
parents response made Mel not feel as strange about others knowing his
fashion preferences.

Everyone other than Mel was still recovering from Steve's surprise
answer to being the matron of honor. Mel might have been nervous
about a no, but the male bride-to-be's nervousness about the answer
was as normal as when someone asked a friend to do a huge favor out of
their comfort zone. Steve wearing a dress would be far out of his
comfort zone.
Jessie was the first one to join Steve in the bridal party. He
figured if he would do so under duress, he should also do so out of
friendship. Kelly saw that Jessie was doing the right thing, standing
by his close friends side, so it was easy for him to do the same. Max
was comfortable enough in a dress to put one on again just to see
Steve experience how uneasy and awkward he made all the other guys
feel.
After all of Mel's friends said yes, Rhoda made a joke about letting
the 'girls' start to plan Mel's big day. Maryanne was not having any
of it. The future Mrs. Blake was not going to let someone she did not
know put doubt in her Mellie Mel's friends about what they just agreed
to do. Maryanne also hated when people would put her down about her
old work outfits, so she was not going to let someone do that to
others. "Rhoda, they are all men. They do not want to be in a gown.
They are doing something which takes courage for a man who wants to
just to support a friend. You should not put them down about it. You
should be supportive and thankful you have such a strong confident
man, a good man."
"Lighten up it was a joke."
"No, it has to be funny for it to be a joke, and that was not. Also,
if it was funny YOU do not put my man down to try to get a cheap
laugh."
Em saw the tension was building quicker than the Broadway run of
Spiderman the musical between those two, and did not want Mel and
Maryanne's special announcement to be ruined by bad feelings.
"Maryanne, Rhoda meant no harm by that joke. She was not thinking.
Trust me, it is not in her nature to be hurtful."
Rhoda knew it was just a joke but saw that it could easily be taken in
a bad way. With her off the cuff comment being seen in a negative
light, Rhoda knew she was in the wrong. The lady who was trying to be
a hack comic also realized that jokes which relied on putting someone
down will come off bad if it is towards a sensitive subject which
others held sacred. She saw that her joke could be seen as an attack
on Mel. If someone she did not know attacked her man, Rhoda would
have reacted just like Mel's woman. "Maryanne, sorry. I should have
thought before I tried to be cute."
"Rhoda, I am sorry I jumped on you like that. I just want my wedding
to be what my man wants it to be and did not want any of his
bridesmaids to feel less of a man for agreeing to make his dream come
true."
It was ironic when the guests at the cookout started to mingle, all
the girls ended up talking with Mellie Mel about the wedding. Even
with Maryanne being just another passenger in the wedding plans, she
gravitated towards them. It made sense, for she was sitting shotgun
and the driver would want to ask her questions about the best way to
get to their intended destination of a great wedding day.
With the ladies not in earshot, Jessie and the rest of them wanted to
know why Steve would quickly agree to what he saw as a fitting
punishment for Terry's wedding. Kelly was the first to ask. Not
wanting to be directly confrontational, he joked, "Steve, did you read
the book 'How to Make Enemies and Alienate Friends'?"
Steve got what Kelly was referring to and answered. He did not want
to give more of an answer than he had to. Steve did not want his
intention of trying to mend the space between him and his friends to
be known. He felt it would lessen how affected his putting himself in
a dress would be if they saw it as just for personal gain. "No, Mel
asked me, and I felt honored."
Max piped in, "Well, you saying yes is putting all of us in a dress
again."
Max trying to blame peer pressure for his actions reminded Steve how
his friends being followers caused the rift between them. Steve
corrected Max's assertion. "No, Max. You could have said no. Like
you could have said no about trying to shave my head."
Jessie piped in, "Get over that Steve."
Jessie pull back some after speaking his mind. The last time he did
so with Steve, his friend attacked him. He was bracing for withstand
the onslaught and then fire back. Jessie had no need to be defensive,
Steve was not going to do so this time. Steve liked that Jessie
started to see himself as those who were close to him did. Jessie's
friend wanted to make sure he nurtured his friend's new-found
confidence. "I am over that prank. If I was not, I would have been
blinded by revenge and ruined Terry's wedding. I brought it up to
back up that Max needs to take responsibility for his actions.
It was stupid of me to say yes in front of you guys. I thought it was
a way to try to make amends for what I did to you guys. I feel bad
about doing it."
Kelly started to laugh. His friend was as misguided as a follower of
Scientology. Kelly knew that Jessie, Mel and him did miss Steve being
around. Them all wanting to be friends was what was needed to make
amends. Wanting to rebuild the friendship would make them all more
emphatic and understand where the others were coming from. It would
help them swallow their pride and admit why what they did was wrong
and not just be sorry for the results.
Steve took the laughter as a rejection of his olive branch. Then
Kelly said, "Steve, you didn't need to do that. You could have just
come around and talked to us."
Jessie joined in, "Yeah, just come around more often and it will work
out."
Max thought with Steve getting back into somewhat the good graces of
the other two, this ordeal was over. "Good, now you can say no, and
we will all be out of this."
Steve said, "I am not backing out. Mel is so happy. If wearing a
stupid gown for a day makes my friend that happy, I am doing it.
You don't have to do it just because we are. Well, I am."
Quickly Jessie said, "I am still in."
Kelly said, "Yeah, I am in also, we can have fun with it."
Kelly was going to try to be more camp than Graham Norton karaoking
the B-52's Love Shack. (For my American readers, Kelly was going to
try to be more camp than RuPaul's dance moves in the B-52's Love Shack
video.) This was as long as it was fine with Mellie Mel. The last
thing the jokester ever wanted to do was hurt anyone while trying to
make others laugh.
Max was thinking of backing out, he was not in the mood for his wife
being cute about this. Then he thought about it and how Maryanne was
able to have his wife change her tune, made him back out of backing
out. He will just bring up those points to get her to drop it. Plus,
even with Steve being all calm about it, the analytical man knew that
he would still get to see Steve get some of his own medicine. "I am in
also."
