It has been three months since Terry and Beth's wedding. The wedding
went off without a hitch, but the ceremony was anticlimactic for Terry
and Beth. All the groomsmen, other than Kim, did not hide how
disinterested they were to be there. The toast which the best man,
Kelly, made was as bland and flat as a can of Budweiser which has sat
open on a hot summer day for hours. Three of the five bridesmaids
also showed disinterest in the celebration of the union.
After the wedding, the group splintered apart. The lifelong friends
came to a fork in the road, they took three different paths. Jessie,
Mel and Kelly remained friends. In fact, they became closer for now
it was the present instead of the past which made their bond. Max
struck out on his own. He really enjoyed making his friendship with
his coworkers stronger. The civil engineer loved talking about his
projects and listening to others talk about theirs. Terry was person
non grata to everyone else other than Kim. Kim did not want to hang
out with the others because they did not hold the same resentment
towards Steve like his new best friend, Terry.
Jessie, Mel, Max and Kelly all knew it was not worth having that
negative emotion towards anyone, let alone one who was once their
friend. Also, they knew not being their own person helped drive Steve
to get payback. They helped pull a childish prank on Steve so they
could not hold it against him for doing the same.
At the urging of his wife, Rosie, Jessie finally invited Steve and
Emily over for a little get together. Rosie kept on bringing up the
invite until he said yes for she wanted to keep her word to Emily.
Rosie was so happy that her husband was not wearing the same gown as
her at the wedding, but she knew it would have been the natural
progression of that crew being immature around each other. Rosie was
also happy it occurred, for Jessie grew stronger as a person facing
the consequences of his inaction towards Steve.
The get together was Jessie making a deep fried turkey for his
friends. When the man started a new hobby of cooking out, he found
his passion in life. Jessie knew his calling was to open a BBQ joint
and Rosie was 100% behind him. The supportive wife thought it would
be great for the both of them to get out of the rat race.
Opening a restaurant would be hard work, but she saw their becoming
entrepreneurs as the perfect way to raise a family. They would be
able to set their own schedules, and to her it was as sure to be as
successful as an Adam Sandler movie would be juvenile. How could it
not be, once people try all of Jessie's different sauces they would
become a dedicated clientele.
Kelly and Simone Roy were the first two to show up. Jessie's friend
was not his usual jovial self. He was pensive about being around
Steve. The man hated conflict and did not want to get into one with
Steve. It was easy to forgive his old friend, but Kelly did not know
how much bad blood would be between them.
As Jessie and Rosie were greeting the Roys, Simone asked if Mel or
Melody was going to show up. Mel was in the process of deeply
exploring the feminine aspect of his personality. More often Melody
would show up when the group was hanging out at one of their homes.
Mel had the love and support of Maryanne to just be who he was.
Jessie and Kelly were proud of Mel, being so in touch with his
feminine side was no big deal to them. People all the time will say
they are open minded until they have to deal directly with being
accepting to others who are radically different. Most men would find
it uncomfortable to stay as close to a crossdressing friend when they
were en femmed.
The two couples were surprised at which guests showed up next. It was
Max and his wonderful wife Rhoda. Jessie invited him, but highly
doubted that he would show up. Max might not have hung out with them
since the wedding, but he wanted to remain friends with them. There
was also the draw of deep fried turkey, and Steve being there, which
made the cookout the must-see event of the year for him. He did not
know what would be juicier, the turkey or seeing Steve be
uncomfortable around them.
Jessie thought it would be best to make sure the new arrivals were up
to date about everyone and the other guests. "Max, Mel had a new
girlfriend and I am going to tell you a little about those two."

Melody checked herself out in the full length mirror. The last thing
she wanted was what she wore not be suitable for a cookout. The
outfit of jean shorts and a cotton baby blue blouse was no doubt what
a woman would wear to a cookout, so she was fine. Dressing
inappropriately for a cookout would make her stick out and draw too
much attention to her outfit instead of the gathering. Her friends
were more than accepting of her, but at the same time she did not want
to do anything which was too over the top.
The part of her ensemble which made her nervous was just one of the
accessories, her hoop earrings. Her makeup gave her a natural look.
The rest of her jewelry was acceptable, they just accented her outfit,
The hoop earrings just felt like they were big enough for a lion to
jump through. They had to be too much. They were too much, change to
smaller loops.
Maryanne knew exactly what her girlfriend was doing. "Dear, the
earrings are fine. Also, you know the guys do not care about the
breast forms so you should wear them if you want."
Melody knew her friends were more than fine about who she was. They
welcomed her into their group. She was lucky that they were so
accepting, to the fact, more often than not, she, the female persona
of their friend Mel, showed up instead of him. In her mind she had
Steve to thank about that. He knew about Melody but never spent any
time with her. The last thing she wanted was to make her friend who
helped Melody get out of the house to be uncomfortable around her
"I know they would be fine with it. I just want to ease Steve into
being around me. I have that huge question to ask him today."
"Don't worry about that, I know he will say yes."
Even with those reassuring words, Melody was going to worry. She was
going to ask Steve to be her maid of honor. Her plans for the perfect
wedding hinged on him saying yes. It would be so easy to have Jessie,
Kelly and Max to say yes if Steve did.
This was not for Steve was the leader of the group, in fact, most of
them would much rather not have anything to do with him. After all,
he had them all in bridesmaid gowns until a couple of hours before
Terry's wedding. Steve got them in that predicament to get payback
for a bad prank they pulled on him before his wedding. Melody
believed they would be more than happy to get those bridesmaids gowns
back on if it meant Steve had to do the same ordeal as them. A small
part of her also believed that they would do it for her.

"Honey I really do not think it is a good idea," Steve told Emily as
they were leaving to go to Jessie's.
Steve's E said back him, "Come on Snookums. It will be fine. It is
time that you finally talk to your friends again."
E's Snookums smiled in defeat, he knew his wise wife was right. He
needed to talk with Jessie and the rest of them. When he planned his
revenge about the prank gone bad, he was ready to cut ties with all
the people who were his targets. It was easy for him not to want
anything to do with them, Steve ended needing to shave his head
stitches from the chunk of flesh they took out of the side of his
head.
The man who wanted to get even backed out having them in dresses. Not
getting payback was the right decision. It would not have solved
anything, and getting even was not as satisfying as he thought it
would be. Backing down from his plot also cleared up his feelings
about all of Terry's groomsmen. He did like being around most of
them, and now missed their company.
"I know E, it is just I do not feel we are going to be staying long."
"You are right if you keep that attitude, just be open and honest."
Emily knew her husband would listen to her suggestion about getting
together with their old friends. Little did she know her suggestion
was also going to help Melody get her dream wedding.

Not until Mel and Maryanne showed up did Max believe the little that
Jessie told him about Mel's crossdressing. Getting only that Mel
liked how he felt in a dress and he is dating the lady who ran
makeover parties made Max think Jessie was trying to make a joke. The
only reason Jessie shared what he had was to prepare Max to be
friendly with the lady who helped Steve with getting them into
dresses, and just in case Mel came as Melody.
As he watched Mel walk into the backyard nonchalantly, it made sense
to him. Before it did not add up, how Mel went along with getting the
tattoo and was comfortable in a dress. He was the first one joking
around at the makeup party. He still did not understand how Steve
knew that Mel would get the tattoo. This was for it was not Jessie's
place to say that Mel was a mole for Steve.
Mellie Mel smiled as he saw the shocked look on Max's face. It was
great seeing a friend again and there was no disgust on his face. His
longtime friend might take some time to get used to Melody, but he is
not going to turn her away. The smile on Melody's face could be heard
in her voice. "Max, Rhoda, I am so happy to see you!"
Max was still getting used to see his friend in a blouse, and quickly
replied, "Same here, Mel."
Rhoda, on the other hand, was at ease seeing Melody in her outfit.
She liked that her friend was not as hyper as she used to be. "Mel, it
is great seeing and who is that with you?"
"Please, call me Melody, or Mellie Mel, when I am dress like this.
"Also sorry, that is my my girlfriend Maryanne Fox. She is great and
so supportive of me being who I am. Maryanne, you know Max Vicker,
well, this is his wife Rhoda.
"I would have told you two sooner about her and Melody, but I have not
seen you since Terry's wedding."
Rhoda nudge her husband to tell him to loosen up around their friend.
"Oh, that is OK. I was just not expecting it. How about the tattoo?"
Melody twisted her ankle to show the tattoo off to Rhoda. "Well, Steve
found out about my crossdressing, so he made me work with him. I
always wanted one and his revenge was a perfect excuse to get it. He
did know about the punishment he gave me until I told him."
Rhoda loved the tattoo. The lady who admired the artwork made a
mental note to ask her friend who did the tat, she was thinking of
getting some ink. "Mellie Mel, that is so cute!"
"But you called him drunk when you were with Terry."
"I acted like I called him. It was past midnight, there was no way I
would have called anyone at that time."
Max was now soaking in the fact that Mel was the inside person for
Steve. The analytical man started to replay all those events to see
what clues, if any, he missed. Max knew there were some, but he did
not see any. The reason was, he was too concerned about getting out
of the forced forfeit Steve was making them all do.
Max wondered out loud where the person he came to see was. Mellie Mel
also had the same question as she looked down at the naked ring finger
on her left hand. She could not wait until Steve came and was able to
put her engagement ring back on.

Maryanne and Mel had only been going out for a half of a year, but the
lady knew that he was the person she wanted to spend the rest of her
life with. Maryanne was not going to wait for Mel to propose and did
so herself. To represent the lightheartedness of their relationship,
she bought a costume ring to give her man when she popped the
question. She knew Mel would love it and might even wear it once in a
while when he allowed Melody to be at the forefront.
Mel actually started to shake when he realized that his girlfriend was
asking for his hand in marriage. This was one of his dreams come
true. Ever since he was a little boy, this man dreamt of finding a
woman strong enough to be his man also. He even had the nerve to
dream that the lady would be the groom and he be the bride.
Mel cried as he said, "Yes I will be your bride."
Maryanne was so proud of him that moment, and knew she made the right
decision. Her man was strong enough to show his emotions and embrace
them. She also liked how in the moment he was with the slip of the
tongue, by saying wife, "You mean my husband."
"Oh yes. I meant husband."
Mel did not mean husband, but was not going to let words get in the
way of this magic moment and the magic between them. Maryanne had
more of the male role in the relationship and Mel had more of the
female role. It was just how they interacted, him being called the
husband and her the wife, was just titles. It did not change how
those two interacted.
Then something changed Mel's mind. He wanted to be as honest with his
future spouse as possible.
"No, I meant bride. I am the female of the relationship and you are
the male. I like being the female of the relationship. It does not
make me less of a man. Actually, I think being who I am makes me a
strong man. You being more in charge of the relationship also does
not make you less of a woman. I think being who you are makes you a
strong woman.
Plus, I always wanted to be a male bride."
Maryanne knew what her love said was as true. The strength she saw in
Mel increased so much by those words. It took a strong man to be so
frank in saying he wanted what most of society would find demeaning in
a relationship. "While you can be a male bride if you want."
Mel hugged Maryanne. "Thank you!"
Maryanne could tell that her future wife did not get what she was
saying, "Mellie Mel, I mean you can be the bride at the wedding if you
want. I wore enough bridal gowns. You want it and I want you to have
it."
Mel started to shake again. "Really? I know the perfect maid of
honor and bridesmaids!"
"You plan the wedding, I know you will enjoy that more than me! Just
keep me informed and get my help when you need it. So, are you going
to take my name?"
Mel knew the question was a joke and said, "No I am a modern man, so I
am keeping my maiden name."

There was a slight cool breeze on that sunny September Saturday
afternoon which greeted Steve and Emily as they got out of the car in
front of Jessie's home. The hound could not help but think that was
some foreshadowing to the greeting which was coming his and his wife's
way. That fate was reminding him the price he paid for trying to get
what one should never be after, revenge.
As they turned the corner and saw the rest of the guests had arrived,
another cool breeze greeted them. This time it was the eyes of the
three men there. Jessie, Kelly, and Max were still harboring hard
feelings towards those couple. Steve now knew the dread they felt
when they saw him.
Rosey was not having her husband act as hospitable as bear with a
toothache to their friends. She knew what Steve did and she thought
it was extreme. It served Terry and the other men right, they played
with fire trying to pull that prank on Steve and they got burnt.
Jessie sounded as sincere as a boy trying to lose his virginity to his
prom date when he said, "I am so happy you two were able to make it."
Kelly and Max's hi was colder than the greeting people gave to their
ex when they saw them walking down the street. If their greetings
were taped, McDonald's would have used it in their customer service
training videos.
E so wanted her husband to bear the cold front which they would have
to endure for the first part of the gathering. She knew that his
friends would start to warm up to them. They would not have been
invited if Jessie was not open to reconnecting, and the others would
not have shown up if they never wanted anything to do with Steve
again. Also, in a couple of hours they would all have a couple of
beers, the lubricant of male social bonding.
Unlike the others, Melody was excited as the lucky seventh caller to a
radio show contest when she saw her old friend. To Mellie Mel, he was
the biggest reason she was able to be out and about and wanted to
thank him. Also, the lady with a huge announcement could not wait to
make it. The bride to be slipped the engagement ring out of her purse
and onto her finger.
Melody called for everyone's attention. She hoped that her joyous news
would help the other guys to welcome Steve back to the fold from his
self-imposed exile. "Everyone, everyone, I was going to wait until
later to say this, but I cannot hold it in anymore."
Holding out her hand to show the rock on her finger. "Maryanne asked
me to marry her, and I said yes!"
The announcement on how the marriage proposal went and seeing the ring
on Mel's finger did not phase Jessie and Kelly at all. They actually
expected Maryanne was going to be who asked the question. Max took a
drink from his beer, wondering how much the role reversal was in that
relationship. Steve and Emily ware happy for Mel and was also happy
that something broke the tension which was an uninvited guest that
arrived with them. Rosey, and the rest of them were just happy to
hear the good news.
After the congratulations, Mel said, "Thank you. I waited until we
were all here to tell anyone, for I have a question. Steve, will you
be my matron of honor, and Jessie and the rest of the guys, will you
be my bridesmaids?"
All the partygoers knew it was a serious question. Jessie, Max, and
Kelly were happy that Steve had to answer first. With him saying no,
he could look like the bad guy and they would not have to deny their
friend her request. Steve took the advice E gave him earlier about
being open and honest. The hound felt honored at being picked to
stand by Mel's side after the torment he put his friend through.
Also, his saying yes would help ease the hard feelings the others had.
"Mel, I would love to be your matron of honor."
The three other guys could not believe the answer. They knew now they
had to say yes. Somehow, Steve was able to get the rest of Mel's
bridal party to be in gowns yet again. They all let out a collective,
"WHAAAAT?"
