Chapter 16 -- "Shave and a Haircut, Two Bits"
Well, it's just how it developed, sort of without Jimmie deciding
anything. It had been five weeks since he got the neat haircut to match
Yvette's look, and his bangs were now too long, covering his eyebrows
completely and starting to get in his eyes. Same for Yvette, and she
finally spoke up to suggest a trip to Blake's salon "just for a trim".
And so it was, when they met at the shop on a Sunday, so as not to
interfere with the busy Saturday at the salon. In fact, Blake would open
the salon early, just for them.
Both Jimmie and Yvette had stopped at the store first to change into
their work outfits, to be ready to open the shop for Sunday hours when
they returned, and they looked really great, really well turned out. They
did this in part to show up for their trims to show Blake what the
lookalike image they were after mattered but, in fact, Jimmie no longer
had any qualms about wearing his chambray shift outside the store, in
public for all to see. For weeks, he had the made the trip to the
sandwich store to pick up lunch for Yvette, himself, and any one else
staffing the store on Saturday or Sunday. No one ever commented on his
attire, and he kind of liked that his slender legs were exposed -- not as
"in your face" as Ms. Butler's bare legs, but it thrilled him to have
them on display in the black leggings. Somehow, it was better than being
in men's shorts.
Yvette, though, had kind of steered Ginny, as she now thought of her
workmate, with the "lookalike" rationale, when what she really wanted was
to have them both arrive at the salon in matching girl's shifts, in order
to further steer Ginny's future. While Ginny wore his black leggings,
Yvette had intentionally left her blush leggings off and was bare legged.
This set up had been discussed in advance with Blake.
First things first. Blake welcomed the two of them and seated them side-
by-side in client chairs at the front of the shop. She had recruited one
of her colleagues to take care of Yvette -- to imitate what she did for
Jimmie, or "Ginny", and to not interrupt Blake's patter to Ginny.
"Ginny, we'll start with a shampoo and then just trim your bangs. If I
remember, the deal is to grow out the rest of your cut to catch up with
Yvette, and finally have you both in a ponytail like the Japanese hip
youngsters wear. I think it's a great look, and easy to maintain."
Jimmie had never been fussed over growing up, and having someone shampoo
his hair was delightful. He relaxed fully as Blake washed and dried his
hair, trimmed his bangs, and combed it back behind his ears as before.
But not actually quite as before. Blake teased out strands of hair at
each end of his bangs, and combed them down in front of his ears. This
was a look, which framed his face, that only Japanese girls adopted, but
it looked comparable to the "before" arrangement, and Blake hoped that
Ginny would not notice the change right away. He didn't.
So, on to the next change. Yvette spoke up to ask if there was time for a
pedicure -- "I've not had one in ages, and I think we have time, wouldn't
you say Ginny?"
"Sure, go ahead Yvette," Jimmie responded, still kind of hypnotized by
the gentle handling that had started with the shampoo.
Blake interjected, "While Nan does Yvette, why don't we see if Ginny
could use a pedicure too."
Jimmie blanched. He knew some men got pedicures and that didn't bother
him, but taking off his leggings did. Although he had noticed Yvette did
not shave her legs or underarms, her light dusting of hair here and
there, other than her head, simple underlined her female essence. For
Jimmie, his heavier growth of leg hair set him apart from the women he
was out with (and enjoying his time with a lot).
But Blake intervened, "Let's just have a look Ginny. No harm, no foul if
your feet are a bit untended. Now's the time to see to that if true, and
you have the time while Nan works on Yvette."
So, Jimmie silently agreed, stood up, and shrugged off his leggings and,
with them, a bit of courage too. He sat back down, closed his eyes, and
awaited the verdict. Surprisingly, no one remarked on his leg hair, but
focused on his feet, and he relaxed a bit.
"Well," Blake started, "you have beautiful feet -- really lovely arches
that beg to be displayed. How lucky you are. And you toes are very long
too. They are so pale I have to think they've never seen the light of
day."
Nan had caught on to what was going on when she realized that Yvette's
request for a pedicure was just a fiction to turn attention to Ginny's
legs and feet. She had registered that "Ginny" was a guy in a shift early
on, but now she grasped that he was completely naive about being led by
women. She was enjoying herself immensely.
So Nan chimed in. "Could I switch and do Ginny's feet? Yvette's are
already good, and I'd love to give Ginny a real 'makeover' -- it would be
a heck of a challenge."
"Sorry dear, but Ginny's all mine today," Blake replied, and it was
decided. And Jimmie didn't register that his "makeover" had been settled
on among the women he was with, and not by him. He only registered that
he was the center of attention among three attractive women, and he had
been since he was given the shampoo.
As she used an emery board on his roughed skin, shaped Jimmie's toenails,
and then applied a transparent polish, she kept up the compliments on the
elegance of his feet. She asked if he ever wore sandals to show them off,
at work or on the weekends. Jimmie replied that he pretty much opted for
ballet-style flats if he wasn't wearing the Mary Janes his employer had
given him. Meaningful glances and smiles were exchanged among the women.
This boy-man could be led!
Yvette chimed in, "I know of some sandals in our bins at the shop and
I'll see if some are suitable for work or weekends. You do have great-
looking feet and must want to show them off, so it's too bad they are
aren't part of the uniform at the shop."
Then Blake shifted gears. "Ginny, I notice that you shave your calves
part way to the knee. Why's that?"
"Ah, well, if I am wearing my favorite culottes at work, I think my flats
look best with them, whether I wear them with anklets or not. But see, my
calves look sort of strange with them though..." he offered haltingly. He
tried to collect his thoughts and then blurted out "What I mean is that I
think I look best, sort of 'put together' you know, like I want to be,
with my smooth ankles ankles showing like in magazine pictures, without
any hairy-ness to mix up how I look." This was the clearest statement he
had ever made, publicly or even to himself, that he wished, deep down, to
look female, to come across as a young woman or, more accurately is his
mind, like a girl. It was said haltingly, but it was now out there.
"That makes perfect sense to me," Blake offered back, and Yvette said
"You make a lot of sense with that perspective on things. If you like to
convey an overall 'put together' look, you should experiment with what
makes you look great."
Ah, "experiment" was the magic word, and Blake saw her opening. Holding
both of Jimmie's feet, she mused "I think Ginny should experiment with
this whole thing, her 'look', and nobody needs to be in the know. What we
should do right here, right now, is to use our hair removal product on
Ginny's legs and just see how it looks. Unless he's in shorts later on,
no one will register a thing, but she will know if she likes to make the
experiment permanent." Oh, this leading Ginny on was just so much fun.
Slipping in the reference to "he" among the "she" pronouns was a
marvelous bit of play.
Jimmie liked the idea of an "experiment", which never would have occurred
to him on his own. the best thing was that no one but Yvette (and
probably Ms. Oberdorfer eventually) would learn about it. It might allow
him to experiment with the maroon romper he liked so much, on weekends.
But he knew he should check with Yvette first. He knew deep down, but not
consciously, that he was under her supervision here.
"Yvette, what do you think?" he asked, knowing he needed her blessing,
even though she had suggested this experiment in the first place.
"Ginny, I think it's a terrific idea, because it lets you decide what you
like on your own, but even more, I think your legs are one of your nicest
features and you should be free to display them just like anyone else
does." That was a mouthful, for sure, and his freedom to dress in men's
shorts or a swimsuit was already clear and undisputed, but Yvette's
phrase had been "just like anyone else" and it conveyed what he needed to
hear in the moment -- that is was alright to appear just a bit girlish if
that's where his sense of style led him.
"Well okay then, Blake, will you help me experiment?" he asked. And, the
deed was done. Jimmie was apprehensive, but very happy with his choice.
It got a little more intimidating when he and Yvette were leaving the
salon, to head back to the shop and open it for business.
"Ginny," Yvette said, "let's start the experiment now, and head back to
work without leggings together, okay? It won't be a big deal."
Jimmie hesitated for a moment, but he knew he wanted to take the plunge,
he wanted to walk outside in L.A. in front of people in his shift and
show smooth, bare legs. He wanted to dress like Ms. Butler if he could,
and he wanted to start with his romper. He was deciding right away that
his "experiment" was the way he wanted to go. He just needed Yvette's
support, and Ms. Oberdorfer's and Ms. Butler's, and he knew he had it.
