Twisted Fates, part one By Myrissa Silverleaf It was a typical day at work for Tom. Long hours for too little pay; but his sense of loyalty kept him at it far longer than was reasonable. The drive home was even worse than typical. Must have been an accident up ahead. He could see the flashing lights of emergency vehicles in the distance confirming his supposition. He sighed, realizing he'd be late for his television show and the "catch as catch can" dinner that was his usual fare. In impotent frustration he settled in for the long wait... --- Deep in the bowls of a foreboding tower of blackest onyx stone, Willow prepared for her attack. All the planning, all the scheming and deceptions were soon to pay off. As she set about arranging her spell components her mind drifted to when this battle had begun. She was nine at the time. Her father, First Mage Corellian, had cast fearsome magic to end the war that had consumed whole villages. The War had sent tens of thousands beyond the veil, families shattered, whole races of beings purged from the face of the world. Hunger and pestilence ran rampant. The pain and suffering tore at Corellian's soul until he could bear no more. Willingly he cast the forbidden spells, knowing that in doing so, he would have to make the ultimate sacrifice. His own life would be forfeit, and that passing would not be an easy one. From the top of Mt. Sarath he cast his spell. Lavender-green bolts of energy flashed and sparkled, thunder crashed across the whole of the world rolling in wave after wave rending the very substance of reality. Then, as suddenly as it began it was over, there were now two worlds in one space. To each of the enemies the other simply ceased to exist. Corellian however was now a part of both realities. The differences between them slowly tearing his flesh apart. The agony wracking his body shown clearly on his face and Willow could only watch her father slowly die. She cried unrelentingly. She pleaded with the remainder of the mages council to at least ease her fathers suffering; perhaps try to save him from the fate he doomed himself with. "His cause was selfless," she cried. "Were it not for him the War would still rage! Countless people would die needlessly!" Her pleas went unheeded. Almost as if it were rehearsed, the Council told her that there was nothing that could be done. That no potion could ease the pain; no spell could change what was happening. In her heart she knew they were speaking true, but they could at least have tried. Three days her father lay screaming silently, wishing for the release of oblivion. Three days she cried in anguish for her father's pain. At the end, instead of a lifeless body, he simply disappeared. On that day Willow vowed revenge for the callous, unfeeling way the Council had acted. For a child, Willow was more than intelligent, more than cunning. She reasoned that to get her vengeance she would need to know all the secrets that the Council held, all the powers of magic at their command. Some inner voice whispered, "Patience, Willow, patience." and she listened. --- "Four years." Willow hissed. "Four years of obeying their rules, of gathering the scraps they were willing to toss my way," she mused, remembering the hours of menial chores just to catch a snippet of a cantrip or a glance at obscure runes. Then the day she proved her skills, enough to gain an apprenticeship at the foot of Danitor, Third Mage or the Council. Long hours she poured over ancient tomes on some assignment for her master, gleaning knowledge along the way. Late into the nights she practiced what she learned, perfecting her craft. Five more years passed before she had learned enough to survive reading the forbidden magic; but as yet she had not discovered the hiding place of the tomes. As her understanding of the magic grew, so did her skill and power. Daily she gained strength, knowing that force of will was the key component of every spell, her thirst for revenge giving her nearly inhuman focus and drive. Willow laughed at that memory, inhuman indeed. No sign did she betray her purpose with, no hint at her true goal. The Council marveled at her single mindedness of purpose, which they supposed was becoming a mage and joining the Council, perhaps even eventually taking her father's place as first mage. She was going to be the Council's undoing if she had anything to say about it. She would destroy every one of those that allowed her father to suffer so. --- Carefully she poured the powdered diamond in a glittering pattern on the floor in the center of the tower's lowest chamber. At certain intersecting lines, tall black tapers stood awaiting the touch of flame. Willow then moved back to the table to mix the secret powders. As she ground the components with her pestle her mind again returned to the past. --- Her power had grown formidable. It was time to make her first challenge for a seat on the Council. A contest of skill against the lowest ranking seat; the place of Thirteenth Mage. Argil was a young mage comparatively. He himself had only gained the position the year before. The Festival of Summer Solstice was the setting for this her first challenging. It was also Argil's first time to defend his seat. It promised to be an interesting contest. The rules were simple. First to yield was the loser. In the Great Council Hall they would battle, signs and sigils would keep the magic from escaping the contest arena, protecting spectators from stray spells and effects. Argil was much larger than Willow. His six feet two inches towered over the slightly built five feet and four inches of Willow's full height; but this was not a contest of physical strength. The combatants stood across from each other awaiting the signal to begin. Argil wasted no time in casting protective spells about himself to fend off Willow's enchantments. Concentration furrowed his brow as magics shimmered about him. Willow hurled a dagger at him, to break his focus. Unprepared for a physical attack from the slip of a girl, the dagger impaled him in the chest piercing his heart. He dropped on the spot, gasping for breath and clutching his chest. He had not yielded and Willow cast her first spell. With his focus gone he had no defense against the fireball, which sprang from her fingertips striking the man square in the face. His upper body was instantly incinerated. The Council, instead of granting her the victory, held an inquest. They determined that Willow had improperly used potentially fatal magic in a contest not designed to be to the death. It was also decided that instead of imprisoning her for murder since she acted within the letter, if not the intent, of the rules, that she be banished from the halls of the Council. Without the Council's resources, they reasoned, her power will be limited to simple spells and be no threat to anyone... --- "They underestimated me," she thought, as her mixture reached readiness. She had remembered every word, every line, every symbol and rune from her studies. Lists of ingredients, pages of incantations, cantrips, and words of power stayed fresh in her mind. She learned the art of bargaining and of making alliances. Slowly at first, she collected the things she would need, made agreements with those unhappy with the Council's use of power, and made promises to those who would most likely gain from the power vacuum should the Council fall. She found this tower, left over from ages past, in which to prepare her revenge. Willow looked around the chamber taking note of the torches blazing in sconces around the room. Their light flickering brightly; the smoke wafting upwards through the open top of the tower. Outside a storm had gathered in sympathy to the magics being woven within. Lightning crashed in the sky above but not one drop of rain entered. Willow undressed casually, discarding her robes on the floor. Nothing could be permitted to interfere with her castings, not even clothing. Her bare feet making no sound, Willow moved to a rather large mirror standing near the casting circle she had drawn on the floor. She admired her reflection briefly, averting her eyes before triggering the spell upon the mirror. "It never hurts to have an escape route," she thought out loud. Her preparations complete, Willow had only an hour left to wait for the exact moment when her powers would reach their peak. She thought about the careful planning, coordinating her allies so as to draw the Council to it's thinnest capacity. Several battles were being fought that night. Towns raided, farms burned all across the known world, each demanding the presence of a Council mage to stop. There would be but one, possibly two of the Council remaining in the Great Hall to protect the secrets and the seat of the Council's power. With the mages deprived of their precious hall they would be the ones to become limited to simple spells and no threat to anyone. Then she would kill them, one by one... --- Slowly the bumper to bumper traffic inched forward. The crumpled vehicles had been pulled out of the traffic lanes. Tom hoped no one had been hurt, but the condition of one of the cars told him his hope was unlikely. Even though the way was now clear, it would be several minutes before the normal flow of traffic would be restored. The radio blared raucous music. Quickly Tom changed the station to something a bit more inspiring. It wouldn't be much longer, he thought. He could see the traffic ahead a mile or so beginning to pick up speed. --- "The time has come." Willow thought as she took her place in the very center of the casting circle and began her attack... To be continued.

Altered Fates Agent Zulo

ALTERED FATES: AGENT ZULO by BobH (c) 2011 "Yes, baby, oh yes!!" I moaned, bending over the motel room desk as my partner took me from behind, grasping my hips and snorting as he rammed himself into me. Red-faced and breathing heavily, the effort seemed to be taking a lot out of him. Giving one last thrust that almost pushed me into the wall, he came with a final labored grunt. Having shot his load he pulled out of me and sat down heavily on the bed, sweating...

Altered Fates Triptych

Altered Fates: Triptych By BobH (c) 2003 Lucius Duvall checked his reflection and nodded his approval at what he saw. His hair and beard might have long since turned silver grey, giving him an illusion of age and wisdom that, in terms of age at least, was beyond his years, but both were immaculately trimmed, their edges razor-sharp. His suit was tailored to perfection, the trouser creases sharp and straight; his shoes polished to an almost mirror-finish; the carnation in...

ALTERED FATES/X-FILES: THE SCAM By Bob H. (c) 2003 FBI HEADQUARTERS WASHINGTON, DC. FBI agent Fox Mulder was starting to hate working alone. Hidden away as he was in the windowless room of a back basement accessible only via a corridor lined with dusty storage racks, he often felt both unappreciated and as forgotten as many in the bureau would like the X-files themselves to be. Altered Fates The Things we do for Friends

Altered Fates: The Things We Do For Friends part 1 of 5 By Morpheus I stood in the school bathroom with my half soapy hands underneath the water faucet, grimacing as I rinsed them off. Then pausing for a second, I looked up and into the mirror that was hung on the wall in front of me. The same familiar 14 year old boy that I always saw looked back at me with a sour expression. His messy brown hair was in need of a cut and his nose still had blood dripping from it. "Shit."...

ALTERED FATES: A CHRISTMAS TALE by BobH (c) 2012 Ed Geraghty sat down heavily on the changing room bench and sighed. He felt every minute of his fifty-six years, and then some. Any positive effect on his health of thirty five years pounding the streets delivering mail had been more than offset by the same number of years spent drinking hard liquor to excess. I've had this story in mind for quite awhile, but the first time I started writing it, Eric came out with a very similar Altered Fates story called The Baby-sitter Caper first. Because of that I put this one on hold for awhile. Well here it finally is. I know that the ending leaves a lot that could be done afterwards, but I left off where I was on purpose. Perhaps I'll do a sequel, or perhaps I'll just leave the rest to the readers imagination. Altered Fates: Babysitting By...

This is a spin-off story from Lord's Prayer which, I hope, wraps up this episode. I know that I've made some enemies in my life, and perhaps with hindsight some of the pain that I've caused could have been avoided, but I've never deliberately acted with malice. I've just made some bad choices. I grew up in the shadow of my elder brother, Ken. He was the Golden Child, the...

Altered Fates Hollywood Agent

ALTERED FATES: HOLLYWOOD AGENT Chapter 1: Laura Jenson was tired. At least she acted as if she was tired, and those who knew her well knew that even though she was the star of over ten highly profitable movies over the last five years, that Laura couldn't act her way out of a paper bag. Altered Fates Body Switch

Altered Fates: Body Switch By: Wayne Halderman Edited by: Heather Hi. I'm really William James Campbell. Or, should I say, I used to be. The truth is, I had my body stolen from me. I was 25 years old, 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighed 285 pounds. I had an athletic build, blonde hair and brown eyes. It all started with me seeing a picture of a girl in a pink dress and saying to myself, "She used to be a male Olympic swimmer before her body got stolen. Now she's a prissy...

Altered Fates: The After-Effect Written by Liam Slade Published originally on Fictionmania, to be reprinted with author's permission. http://www.liamslade.com *** For starters, let me tell you that I never felt different. I couldn't have cared less for Barbie dolls and easy-bake ovens. I liked baseball a l...

Altered Fates The Vacation Souvenir

Altered Fates: The Vacation Souvenir by Tim Willows "Be careful!" June cried. Philip dismissed his wife's warnings with a backward wave of his hand. Altered Fates Child Star

Altered Fates: Child Star by Tim Willows It had become a nightly ritual: Barry would arrive home late, after an exhausting day of attending auditions.
