The Amazon Hotel
By Margaret Jeanette
Harriet Tuchow was working as a clerk at the bank. One of her
regular customers was there and he always told her a funny joke. It
always made her day.
Meanwhile her husband Thomas was explaining a report to the
president of a five restaurant chain that he was bookkeeper for.
The chain had made a record profit last quarter. More people were
eating out and they were getting their share. The president praised
his bookkeeping and told him to keep up the great work.
When they got home that night there was a notice for a registered
letter for Harriet being held at the post office. Their bills were
paid but they were just making it. They wondered what the letter
was about.
The next day during her lunch hour she went to the post office.
She saw the letter was post marked 'Newton' and tried to think of
anyone she knew in Newton. She didn't recognize the return name but
it said 'Attorney at Law.' She was afraid to open it. It had to be
bad news. Who in Newton would be suing them?
That night she handed Tom the letter, telling him to open it. He
opened it and read it, then was smiling as he told her it was
possibly good news, possibly bad news. He handed it to her.
The letter said her Uncle Peter had died and named her in his
will. She was to call to set up an appointment or to arrange for a
settlement of the will. Newton was a three hour drive, and she had
to go there. Tom told her he would go along for support. They
decided she should set up an appointment for the following Monday.
The following Monday they made the three hour drive to Newton,
found the attorney's office, and were seated in front of him.
"Your Uncle Peter was a strange man. He left his sister one
dollar with the instructions she was to use it for a one-way ticket
to Hell. The balance of his estate he left to you. How well did you
know your uncle? I noticed you were not at the funeral."
"I knew him but not very well. We weren't notified he had died. He
was different, and the family disowned him when I was a teen-ager.
I told him I thought he was cool but I was seventeen when I saw him
last."
"Well, the bills have been paid and there is a bank account with
a little over twenty-two hundred dollars in it. Also, there is the
Amazon Hotel, on the edge of town. It is making a go of it but
just. If you like I can set up for it to be sold and forward the
money to you. What do you say to that?"
"I would like to see it before I make a decision. Is it locked up
right now?"
"No, a Mrs. Gladys Sturk is running it. She has basically run it
for the last couple of years, since your Uncle Peter got sick. She
is a widower and I think she thought your uncle and she might get
married someday. She is rather crusty and doesn't waste words. This
is the main street, and when you leave go left, and you'll find it
on the right hand side of this street on the edge of town. There
have been stories circulating about the place and strange things
happening there, but I have never been able to find out anything
about them."
"What kinds of stories?"
"I will not repeat anything that I can't prove. If you want to see
it, go take a look at it. I've only been in the entrance and that
was to pick up a copy of a financial statement from Mrs. Sturk."
They left and drove to find it, and found it without any trouble.
They saw it was a massive four story brick building. They parked
and sat and looked at it. Finally they went to the entrance. They
entered and asked the lady at the desk if she was Mrs. Sturk. The
lady said she wasn't and would get her.
The lady returned followed by a sixtyish woman who said she was
Mrs. Sturk. Harriet and Thomas introduced themselves and told her
they had just inherited this building from her Uncle Peter. Harriet
said they would like to look the building over as the lawyer said
he could make arrangements to sell it if they wanted.
"Your lawyer already has a buyer for it Sam Goodbar was already
here looking the place over. He wants to convert it into
apartments. He has all kinds of ideas and more money than he can
spend. I'll give you the cook's tour."
She led them first into the massive kitchen telling them the
building was built when large rooms were the norm. The kitchen was
surprisingly very modern and looked impressive. Mrs. Sturk told
them they had a great cook in Mrs. Hancock who took no guff from
anyone but really knew her stuff.
She then took them to see what a room looked like, and told them
week-ends were usually almost full. She said they had reservations
from different organizations for just about every week-end. She
unlocked a door and they went in. They saw it was a very
comfortable looking room with two double beds in it. The only thing
was that it could use a coat of paint.
Mrs. Sturk said all the rooms on the first floor basically looked
the same. She led them to an old elevator that looked like it might
hold six people if they stood close. She operated the control and
took them to the second floor. There she first showed them a large
room with iron cots and what looked like gym equipment in it. She
said the week-end guests used this room a lot and that some of the
slaves used it."
Harriet asked why she'd said 'slaves.' Mrs. Sturk told her to sit
down and she would explain.
"Your Uncle Peter had this room made up to accommodate some of the
guests. Every week-end doms and their subs come here for fun and
frolic. This is the punishment room, where some of the subs sleep
at night. See that pulley with the rope hanging down? A dom can
make her sub stand on his tip-toes for hours by locking his hands
in the handcuffs and raising the rope and tying it off over there.
We get up to fifteen doms and fifteen subs on a week-end. There are
16 bedrooms on this floor and they basically take it over on
week-ends. This used to be the Newton Hotel but your uncle Peter
renamed it the Amazon hotel to attract more of the dom-sub
business, and it is working because now we get them sometimes
during the week also."
"I never knew something like that existed. You mean they actually
have clubs that are devoted to that?"
"Yes, and we get calls from all over from people who heard about
us and want to use our facilities. We had one group who came on a
Wednesday and Thursday because they couldn't get a week-end. I
don't care what the guests do as long as they leave the place whole
and don't bother me"
She took them to the third floor where she showed them a large
room with many dressers and a room with wall lined with small
closets that was filled with single beds. She said this was the
dormitory-changing room where years ago the staff was young girls
who stayed right there. She explained that some of the young girls
came from a distance and it was more convenient for them to stay
and sleep than to return home only to have to be back so early in
the morning for the breakfast work.
Then she showed them the room next door. It had four cages of
various shapes. She explained this was also a punishment room for
use by the doms. They saw a cage where anyone in it would not be
able to move much and would have to stand all the time. Another had
what looked like needles sticking out where anyone in it would be
poked if they moved. Harriet couldn't get out of there fast enough.
She said there were two more large rooms which were mostly for
storage of furniture and other odds and ends. Then there was the
fourth floor. She told them it was where Uncle Peter lived.
There was a massive living room with beautiful furniture in it.
Then they saw the bedroom. It held a massive bed that had to have
been specially made. It looked like it could accomadate four
couples with room left over. Harriet was surprised when shown the
small cooking area. It only had a coffee maker. Mrs. Sturk
explained that he took all of his meals in the hotel dining room
and didn't need a kitchen, as he used the hotel's kitchen. The
bathroom held a large tub that was big enough for two and had a
separate shower stall. There was one last room were they saw a
model railroad set up. Mrs. Sturk said this was the room where he
came to relax.
They adjourned to the hotel office where Mrs. Sturk explained that
the hotel was making a profit but could do better. She said it
would be a shame to shut it down and convert it into apartments.
Harriet said she would have to think about it and if she kept it
she would want to be in charge. Mrs. Sturk said she would be glad
to get back to just keeping the books and ordering supplies.
They returned to their car and went to get something to eat. While
they were eating, Tom could see the wheels turning in Harriet's
head.
"You know, we could take over that hotel. You are in a dead-end
job and I am just a bank teller. It would give us a chance to make
something of our lives."
"It is an old building and I don't know a lot about fixing
plumbing or anything electrical. If something goes wrong I don't
know if I could fix it. I could always keep the books."
"Mrs. Sturk said she keeps the books and orders everything. I
think I would keep her on. She probably could manage the hotel for
me if I wanted. In any case I would need her for advice."
"I guess we can try it. I can always get a job as a bookkeeper
somewhere. Do you really think you can handle running a hotel?"
"I am sure I will learn from Mrs. Sturk. She will show me how if
I just watch her. She seems to be a little hard but I am sure under
it all she is a good person."
They returned to the hotel and told Mrs. Sturk they were going to
give it a shot at running the hotel. Harriet told her she wanted
her to stay on and show her just what to do. Mrs. Sturk said she
would make her the best hotel keeper in the world. She said she was
glad they weren't selling the place.
They returned and told the lawyer they were going to keep the
hotel and were going to run it themselves. He congratulated them
and said if they ever needed legal advice he was available.
On the way back they agreed to give their two week notice the next
day. They got back and Harriet immediately started to make plans
for the move.
The next two weeks were really busy with putting their house up
for sale and getting things packed that they wanted to take along.
They received two offers on their house but both were too low for
them to accept. On the last day before they were to move one of the
buyers upped their offer to one they could accept. It would leave
them with a bit over six thousand dollars after the mortgage was
paid off.
They moved, and when they got to the hotel Tom brought all the
boxes up to the fourth floor and started to unpack. He got
everything unpacked in two days and really felt like he had done a
lot. Harriet was working with Mrs. Sturk and learning a lot about
the hotel business she'd never known before. The week-end was fast
approaching and soon it was Friday.
Guests started to arrive, and by four there were twenty guests
there. They needed help to serve the evening meal. Tom was pressed
into service to help serve. Mrs. Hancock told him he had to wear an
apron to serve the guests, that was the rule. She handed him a pink
plain apron that tied behind the neck and behind the waist. He
didn't want to wear it but Mrs. Hancock would not hear of him not
wearing it. He ended up wearing it.
The set-up was simple. Waitresses took orders and took notes about
who ordered what, and got the drinks for the tables and made sure
the drinks were kept full. Servers took the food from the kitchen
and served it then cleared tables when people left.
He found it was an easy job, and after a bit didn't feel shy about
being seen wearing a plain pink apron. Mrs. Hancock told him he did
an excellent job, and to be there at six the following morning to
help with breakfast.
That night he told Harriet they had to hire more help to serve the
meals and clean. Harriet said she would look into it. He said right
now there was only one other girl serving.
The next morning he was in the kitchen at six. Mrs. Hancock told
him to get his apron on. He asked where they were kept and she took
him to the second floor staff room and gave him locker number five.
Inside were three pink aprons and three black aprons. He asked what
the three black aprons were for and she told him after breakfast he
was to clean the rooms that had been used last night.
He served breakfast and when he was done Mrs. Hancock told him to
go to the front desk, where he would be given a list of what rooms
to clean. She told him to wear the black apron when he cleaned the
rooms. He did as instructed and Penny the other server showed him
where the carts for cleaning were kept. He was to do the second
floor -- there were ten rooms to clean. He got to work and had most
of them cleaned when Penny came and told him it was time to get
ready to serve the noon meal.
The week-end went smoothly and he spent most of his time serving
and cleaning. Monday he started to paint the rooms. He found he
could get two rooms a day painted. When Harriet looked at the rooms
she said they looked much better now.
The next three weeks went just about the same, with him painting
rooms during the week and serving and cleaning on week-ends. He
finally got the rooms all painted and got a couple of days to rest
before having to serve and clean on a week-end.
On Monday Harriet called a meeting of the whole staff. She
announced that they were going to be busier on Wednesdays and
Thursdays, as she had just worked out a special rate for a group of
Doms who wanted a time other than a week-end. She said she worked
out a special menu for them and that the hotel would be more
profitable, so they could hire some extra help. She also said she
was putting Mrs. Sturk in complete charge of the staff. She said
Mrs. Sturk would have the authority of an owner. Tom had the idea
Mrs. Sturk didn't care for him, but said nothing.
On Wednesday, Mrs. Sturk called a meeting of the staff. She
introduced a change in attire for everyone. For the cooks there
were white full cover aprons and for the waitresses half aprons
with lace trim and a pocket for their order pad and pen. For the
servers there were pink lace trimmed aprons and for cleaners there
were black aprons with black lace trim.
Tom asked if she expected him to wear a lacy apron and she said
everyone without exception would wear one. He said, "I quit," and
she said she would talk to him after the meeting. No one else had
any questions, so the meeting was over.
Mrs. Sturk looked really stern. He felt like she was looking right
through him. He shuddered a bit.
"You will wear one of the new aprons. Do you understand?"
"I told you, I quit!"
"You can not quit! Now are you going to agree to wear a new apron
or do I have to convince you."
"I am not going to wear a lacy apron."
Before he realized it she was pinching his ear and had him
twisting. She twisted it until he screamed. She asked him if he was
going to wear the apron or not. He was in pain. He did not like
pain. He refused to wear the apron. She did something he never
thought she could possibly do. She grabbed his groin and squeezed.
The pain was unbearable. He found himself agreeing to wear the
apron. She released him and handed him a black lace trimmed apron.
He donned it.
He was cleaning the last room on his list when Penny came in to
help him finish. She said she was done with hers and would help him
get finished. She told him he looked cute in his apron.
They had about an hour until it was time to get ready to serve
supper. He was going to complain to Harriet but he found out she
was gone to look at some possible new furnishings forthe hotel.
Penny and he sat in the staff room and talked. Penny said her
father had died and she couldn't get along with her mother so she
took this job because it offered room and board. He could see she
was a nice girl and that she was possibly stronger than he was.
He'd never been an athlete or physically strong. He had done quiet
things all his life.
When it was time to get ready to serve supper he didn't want to
put on the pink apron, but Penny pointed out it wasn't any
different than the black on. He put it on and went to the kitchen.
Penny got to serve the first four suppers to a group from town that
had come just for the supper. The hotel was becoming known for it
good food. He got to serve the next two to a Dom and her slave. The
Dom had a full four course meal and the slave got a salad and a
glass of water. He saw the slave was wearing a leather collar that
said slave on it. The Dom was wearing a black leather skirt and
tight white blouse. He felt sorry for the slave.
He took the next meal out and saw it was for Harriet. She told him
he looked precious in his new apron but his pants and shirt looked
out of place. She had what seemed a mean looking smile on her face.
He asked her to get him out of the apron and she said she thought
he looked too nice in it and that he was a server and servers wore
the same uniform. She told him she was the one to make final
decisions and she wasn't going to have a server make a decision for
her. He wished he didn't have to serve her.
He served three other groups and it didn't go so bad. It was as if
no one paid any attention to what he was wearing. At least no one
said anything..
That night he told Harriet he was done serving and cleaning. She
told him he had to take that up with Mrs. Sturk as she was in
charge of all the staff. She asked him what he was going to do if
he quit. He said he didn't know.
"Rules have to be rules for the whole staff. If you quit and want
to stay here you have to pay your way. If you don't have a job
you'll end up outside on your own. I hope you stay. We do need
your services. Think of it as just a uniform you have to wear like
a policeman wears a uniform. Don't think of it as you being a man.
Besides you do look so nice in it. Tomorrow morning Mrs. Sturk and
I are interviewing two girls that we figure on hiring to help clean
and serve. That will make it easier on you as you won't have so
much to do. I have to tell you, I won't take kindly to it if you
quit. I want to make a go of this hotel, you know that, and I'm
depending on you. I need you here. And while you're here there
isn't anything else you can do here except serve and clean. Now are
you still going to quit?"
"No, I'll continue, but how am I supposed to find a different job
when I am working here every day."
"This is a pretty good job. Yuo are doing a great job for the
hotel and that brings people back. Our occupancy rate is rising and
we are showing a profit. Aren't you glad of that?"
"Yes, but why can't you come up with something else for me to do?"
"I can't think of anything that you would even remotely be able to
do. I have talked to Mrs. Sturk and she can'tthink of anything you
could do that is needed other than what youare doing. What can you
think of?"
"I could mow the lawn and take care of the grounds."
"We have a contract with a service that does that. It is prepaid
so that is out of the question."
"I can't think of anything else right now. By the way, I think I
need a haircut. I don't have any cash. Can you give me some so I
can get one?"
"You're hair is all right. You just have to restyle it is all."
"I am going to talk to Mrs. Sturk tomorrow anyway."
"Just remember what I said. If you aren't working here and you
can't pay your way then you aren't staying at this hotel. I have to
make sure everyone pulls their own weight aroound here."
The next morning after serving breakfast he went to talk to Mrs.
Sturk. She was very cordial at first.
Then he said, "I don't think it is fair to me to have me wear
aprons that are lace trimmed."
"You must understand that everyone in a category must be dressed
the same. There is a reason for everything. Personally I think you
look very nice in your apron. Your wife said she thought you were
coming along nicely as a server and a cleaner. I have observed both
areas and I must say that you do an excellent job."
"Isn't there some place else you can use me? Some place where I
wouldn't have to wear lace aprons?"
"Not that I can think of. If you can think of anything or any
place where you can do something else then let me know and I will
certainly consider it. But as of right now there isn't anything
else. I am sorry but I have to cut you off because your wife and I
have to interview two possible new employees. Aren't you glad the
occupancy rate is going up?"
"Yes, it does look like it is getting better."
"Your wife is quite a woman and has really made a difference in
this place. You should be proud of her. Now, run along and get your
cleaning done."
He left and picked up his list of rooms to clean. He counted them
and figured he would only have two rooms to clean after lunch. He
was glad that he would have some time to look around for some other
job he could do.
He was working on his third room when Mrs. Sturk came with a girl
she introduced as Sara and told him to show her the ropes, that she
was going to be a cleaner-server. He saw she already had a black
apron on and explained what he was doing to finish up the room. He
went on to the next room and gave her the full job list. She said
it looked simple enough and that she could do it. When they
finished it was time to prepare for lunch service.
When he went to change aprons Penny was there with a girl she
introduced to him as Johanna. He noticed both girls looked like
they were fairly strong. He asked them if they'd ever had jobs
before and both of them said they'd helped on family farms. Johanna
said she wouldn't miss having to throw hay bales around and both
Sara and Penny agreed.
During lunch he showed Sara how to tell where each meal went and
explained that they cleaned up after the people left the table.
Lunch went well and they were back at cleaning the rooms. There
were two rooms left and he observed how Sara did an excellent job
cleaning both rooms. It was early afternoon and he had at least
three to four hours before he would have to go to serve supper.
He went into the staff room and Penny said they had to have a talk
with him. He asked what the problem was.
Penny said, "Well the problem is you. We've been talking. You look
out of place with the lace apron on and wearing jeans and a shirt.
You should be wearing a blouse and skirt or a dress. Now will you
try on some different clothes or do we have to force you. It will
be better for you if you do it voluntarily because if we have to
force you I can't guarantee what will happen to your pants and
shirt. Will you please co-operate?"
"Have you spoken about this to Harriet? She runs this place, you
don't."
"She said she'd already mentioned it to you. She told us to go for
it."
"You want me to try on a dress?"
"No, a blouse and skirt, actually."
"There is no way I am going to wear a blouse and skirt. Get it out
of your head!"
Sara quickly grabbed him and Johanna and Penny started to pull his
pants off. He heard them rip and soon was trying to stop them from
pulling his under shorts off. He was no match for the strength of
the girls. He saw his ripped under shorts and then he was being
forced into a pair of lacy panties. Then Johanna grabbed ahold if
his shirt. Buttons went flying as she tore it off his body. Sara
was holding him so tight he couldn't move.
Five minutes later he found himself sporting a pair of gel filled
breast forms. The fight had gone out of him. The girls knew it and
Penny slowly slid the bra up his arms and hooked it in the back. He
allowed himself to be put in a nylon lacy slip and he lifted his
legs so nylon stockings could be put on him. He was like in a
trance. A fancy lacy white blouse was put on him and then a black
sheath skirt was zipped and buttoned on him. He lifted his feet so
a pair of black pumps with a three inch heel was put on his feet.
He walked in a daze and sat when pushed into a chair. Sara worked
on his hair, combing and pinning it so it looked as feminine as she
could make it. Then Johanna applied makeup to his face as Penny
attached false nails to his fingers and painted them sparkling red.
When they had finished Sara and Johanna took him to look at
himself in a mirror. Penny slapped his face to bring him out of his
stupor. He shook his head and looked at himself.
"You girls are in big trouble. Wait until my wife sees this. She
will fire the lot of you! You have gone too far this time!"
Sara said, "Where do you think we got the clothes and everything.
Johanna and I were hired and told that it was our job to make you
more presentable. We only did what we were told to do."
Penny said, "After we got started you went into a trance-like
state and allowed us to do what we wanted to you. You were just
like a life sized Barbie doll. I think that is what we will call
you now -- Barbie! Now, Barbie it is time to get ready to serve
supper. Get your apron on."
He went and put on the pink apron. Johanna took him by the arm and
they headed for the kitchen. He felt like a zombie being led to a
torture session.
When Mrs. Hancock saw him she told him he looked just beautiful.
She said she wondered why he'd waited so long to get with the
program. The meals started coming off the stove and she kept Penny,
Sara and Johanna delivering the food. He was starting to wonder if
she felt sorry for him.
Then she handed him a plate and said it was for table ten. He took
it and when he saw who was sitting at table ten his heart sank. It
was Harriet. He took it and set it on the table. She looked at him
and smiled.
"Well, you do look nice. You look a lot better now that your apron
goes with the rest of your outfit. You can continue to wear clothes
like that. I think they're more fitting for you to wear now that
you're doing a woman's job."
He was ready to start crying and walked away. In the kitchen tears
formed in his eyes. Mrs. Hancock came and gave him a hug and told
him it wasn't so bad. He had never felt so humiliated in his life.
He wouldrather have been swallowed up by the earth if given a
chance.
As the time approached to finish the evening's serving Mrs.
Hancock gave him a note. He opened it and saw it was from Mrs.
Sturk. It said to vacuum and clean the hotel lobby after supper
chores were done.
He went and changed aprons and was cleaning the lobby. He saw
Harriet go through and she smiled as she passed him. He thought
about how, when they were first married, every time she went past
him she kissed him. Those days were definitely gone.
It took him some time to get the lobby cleaned and when he was
finishing up the woman at the desk asked him who he was. He told
her he was Harriet's husband. She said he was the talk of the
staff. She told him he looked very nice in his outfit. He felt
humiliated and blushed at the compliment. He didn't thank her but
turned to put his cleaning tools away.
He got up to their floor and realized he was as tired as he could
ever remember. When he went into the bedroom Harriet was there. She
got up and handed him a fancy nightgown and told him to wear it.
"Why are you doing this to me? The girls told me this was all your
idea. What are you trying to prove? I don't want to wear dresses
and skirts!"
"I'm doing it because I can. I talked to a couple of the doms that
come in here and they both said that you probably would be happier
wearing a dress, since you do such a great job serving and
cleaning. You just don't realize it yet. I don't think you want me
to make you my slave but you will keep wearing clothes like those
you have on now. Your outfit for tomorrow is on the chair and from
now on I expect to see you wearing pretty clothes."
"Can't we discuss it? Did you ever think I might not want to wear
those clothes?"
She came and looked him straight in the eye. "You will wear what
I say or I'll use the punishment room and you will be the one being
punished. Do you want that?"
"No, you have no right to force me to wear women's clothes."
She came over to him and before he knew it she'd slapped him so
hard he fell. He was struggling to get up when she pulled him by
the arm and he found himself over her knee. She had something in
her hand and was soon whipping his rear. The pain was unbearable
and he was crying uncontrollably. She stopped and stood up, dumping
him on the floor.
"Now, Are you going to wear what I told you or do you want more?"
"I will wear whatever you say."
He felt like he had just lost everything. He couldn't believe she
had just spanked him and his rear was burning. He started to get
undressed. When he was naked Harriet had him bend forward over the
bed. She put some soothing lotion on his rear, saying
apologetically that she didn't know she had broken the skin. She
helped him get his panties on and then the nightgown.
He crawled into bed still sobbing. He laid as close to the edge
and as far away from her as he could. He fell asleep fairly fast.
He awoke the next morning at five-thirty.
He got up and stared to get dressed. He didn't want to put on the
black dress but did. It had a wide white lace trimmed collar and
lace trim in front. He got it on and Harriet woke and told him not
to forget the lipstick that was on the bathroom counter. She went
back to sleep.
When he went into the kitchen Mrs. Hancock told him he looked very
nice. Then she told him to sit down and she handed him a cup of
coffee.
"I know this isn't what you call fun. I'm sorry it happened to
you. You are a very nice man, too nice for that matter. I can't say
I agree with it but I must tell you, just about all of the staff
knows you didn't do this on your own. If we protested your
treatment we would lose our jobs but the ones I talked to think it
is horrendous, what your wife is doing to you. I am sure things
will work out. Just hang in there and wait! Things have a way of
happening that we don't always understand. Personally I think you
are too good for your wife. She seems to have become influenced by
those women who come here for their parties every week-end. My
opinion is that they are so insecure they have to have someone to
control so they feel some sense of personal value. I know your wife
and my advice is to try to roll with the punches and watch and
wait, and see that you come out on top."
He felt a lot better hearing this. He wondered why Harriet had to
do this in the first place. He decided to try to stay clear of her.
He asked Mrs. Hancock if she knew which meal orders were Harriet's.
She said she knew and he asked if she could have one of the other
girls deliver her meals. She said she would and gave him a big
smile.
Breakfast went fast and soon he was cleaning. He only had four
rooms to clean today so that meant he wouldn't have any this
afternoon. He was cleaning his second room when Penny came in and
said she had to talk to him. They sat on the edge of the bed.
"I just have to tell you I feel terrible about what we did to you
yesterday. I had trouble falling asleep last night thinking about
it. You never did anything to hurt me and I know I hurt you. I am
truly sorry. Mrs. Sturk and your wife told us the clothes and
everything would be in locker four and we were to get you dressed
in the clothes or they couldn't guarantee our jobs. I need this job
and to tell you the truth at first it sounded like fun. I like you
and I am sorry for hurting you."
She then grabbed him and gave him a hug. Their lips met and she
gave him a kiss that totally surprised him.
"I know you had to do it," he said. "I don't want to wear these
clothes but I don't have any choice. I am hoping my wife comes to
her senses but I am afraid she is past that point. I don't know
what to do about this."
"I have an idea! Why don't you try to enjoy it? If you look like
you are enjoying it your wife may reconsider."
"I don't know if that's possible. I feel so out of place wearing
these clothes."
"Well, just try it. We know it isn't your choice so you know we
are really on your side."
She left and he finished his cleaning in there. He finished
cleaning with time to spare before having to go serve lunch. He sat
in the staff room and thought about what he could do. He wondered
what he could say to Harriet to make her change her mind.
Sara and Johanna both came in together and went to make up the
beds they'd slept in last night. He realized he'd been in there
this morning and had never noticed them. They came over to him and
Sara said they had to talk to him.
"I have to tell you that the only reason we did what we did
yesterday was so we could keep our jobs. Your wife told us last
night we did a great job on you yesterday. We talked about it
before we went to sleep and neither one of us is proud of what we
did. We just want you to know we are sorry!"
"I know why you did it and I don't hold it against you. I am
debating what I want to do about this. Mrs. Hancock had a good talk
with me this morning and told me the staff knows this isn't my
doing. That makes me feel better."
It was time to report to the kitchen and when he got on the
elevator there was a man there going down with a lot of boxes. He
asked what was in the boxes and the man said it was some old stuff
from the fourth floor.
His curiosity got the best of him and after his lunch duties he
went to the fourth floor to see what Harriet had gotten rid of. He
couldn't see anything that was gone. He finally looked in the
closet and saw that all of his clothes were gone. He went to his
dresser and looked in the drawers. He saw they were empty. She had
gotten rid of all of his men's clothes!
He went to the hotel office and asked Harriet if she had any money
so he could go shopping. She gave him forty dollars, telling him
she wanted any change back. He had to ask her for the car keys. She
handed them to him telling him to buy himself a new dress.
He left and when he was going to go into the first store he
hesitated and wondered if he really should go in. He got up his
courage and went in. When a clerk asked him if he needed any help
he said in a low voice that he didn't. At the checkout he pulled
the money out of his skirt pocket and put the change back into it.
By the time he got back he had settled down. He carried the bag
along as he went to give Harriet the change and the car keys. He
handed her the keys and change. She asked what he had bought and he
said nothing much. She said to show her and he hesitated. She
grabbed the bag.
She pulled out a pair of men's pants and a shirt. She shot him a
dark look, then smiled.
"I am sorry I spoiled your surprise. You bought me some new
clothes. I know you don't need these so they must be for me. If
they are for you then I would have to punish you and you wouldn't
want that would you?"
"No!"
"Thank you for showing me you want me to wear the pants in our
relationship now. You really should have bought yourself a new
dress though. By the way, why didn't you tell me the girls now call
you Barbie? I think that is a beautiful name for you."
He turned and walked out. He wondered how he could have been so
stupid as to carry the bag along with him. He felt totally
depressed. He thought about not showing up to serve supper. He went
to the staff room. It was empty so he sat and thought about his
situation. He thought about divorce, but then realized he had no
money or assets. He thought that was out of the question. He was
wondering if he shouldn't just end it all.
The three girls came in and disrupted his thoughts. They engaged
him in some conversation. He told them he didn't feel like serving
tonight.
Penny said, "You look like you just lost your favorite dog. You
need to move and do something to get over it. You need to do
something positive. You do an excellent job of cleaning and
serving. Stop and think about that. Think about what you do that is
good and what you are good at. Now come on get your apron on and
come along."
He got his apron on and went with them. The three girls as usual
first had a glass of soda and sat at their usual corner table. Mrs.
Hancock told him to perk up, that things had to get better.
The serving started and Mrs. Hancock was worried about him so she
had the other girls do the serving. Then Mrs. Sturk came and
whispered something in her ear. She frowned and he heard her say
she would do something. A little bit later she called him and told
him it was his wife's supper and she was told to have him serve it.
He wondered why he had to serve her but didn't protest. He took it
out to her. .
She told him to look at her then she stood up. "See, I am wearing
the nice clothes you bought me today. It is so nice to see you give
me the pants to wear. I know you just love your dresses!"
He couldn't believe she could do something like this in front of
everyone. He turned and saw Mrs. Hancock in the doorway. When he
got back in the kitchen she told him he was done for the night. She
told him she was sorry she had sent him with his wife's supper. She
told him to go get his apron off and to rest. She suggested he take
a warm bath.
He followed her suggestion. As he started to relax in the tub he
thought about Harriet and how much she had changed since they moved
here. He no longer knew her. He decided it was time for a serious
confrontation.
As soon as she arrived he went to face her. "We have to have a
serious talk! I don't think I can go on like this. I am your
husband not just one of the staff for you to make fun of. You have
to accept the fact that there isn't much I can do here. I will do
anything but I am sick of serving and cleaning."
"You have to be kidding! I am allowing you to stay here out of the
goodness of my heart. Stop and think about what you are doing here.
Are you taking the lead and showing that you can be a boss? No, you
are not and never will be a boss. What husband parades in front of
his wife wearing a dress and heels? You say you are not just one of
the staff but how am I to see you when all you are is one of the
staff. I don't like to say this but you better get out of here. As
far as I am concerned you are just one of the staff. Go move your
stuff into the staff room right now."
"You can't be serious!"
She advanced on him and he backed up. She repeated in a menacing
tone for him to get his stuff out of there. He refused. She grabbed
his arm and pulled. In the heels he had to go with her. She took
him to the second floor punishment room and soon had his wrists
handcuffed over a bench. She took the riding crop and pulled up his
skirt and started to whip him. She gave him twenty blows and he was
crying. Then she undid his restraints and led him into the room
where the cages were. She pushed him into the cage with the needles
in it. He felt the hundreds of pin pricks as she slammed the door
shut. His whole body spasmed as he felt pin pricks on his whole
body and he screamed in pain.. She asked him if he was ready to
move to the staff room and he shouted he was.
She released him and pulled him walking fast and returned to the
fourth floor. He was getting his clothes and she wasn't done.
"You will do as I say and if I ever hear of you saying anything
bad about me I will repeat what just happened but you will spend
the night in the cage. Do you understand?"
He didn't answer her. She repeated herself and he told her he
understood. He took his dresses and went to the staff room. His
body hurt all over and he was in great pain. He slowly undressed,
trying to move slowly so the pain wasn't so great. The three girls
were there and watched as he slowly undressed and when he was down
to his panties they saw all the blood on is body.
Penny immediately went and got a cold wash cloth from the bathroom
and came and told him to stand still as she washed his body. She
couldn't believe all the sores that were bleeding on him. She said
he should see a doctor but he refused. She pulled his panties down
a little to wash his rear and saw the welts from the whipping. She
started to cry in sorrow for him. She tenderly helped him get his
nightgown on and helped him get into bed lying on his stomach. She
was amazed that he either passed out or fell asleep immediately.
The three girls talked about what they should do about this. They
agreed they had to talk to Mrs. Hancock tomorrow morning first
thing.
The next morning the three girls were telling Mrs. Hancock about
what they had seen and that he told them Harriet had kicked him out
of their apartment. Just then Mrs. Sturk stepped in and said there
was a meeting of the kitchen staff immediately after breakfast.
Then Mrs. Hancock said she would think of something. When he came
into the kitchen she saw he was moving very slowly. She could see
the marks on his face and arms. She felt so sorry for him. She
wanted to take him and just give him a hug but she knew it would be
painful to him.
She didn't give him a single order to serve. She had told him to
sit in the chair in the corner and he sat with a dazed look on his
face. He wasn't even aware of what was going on around him.
Breakfast ended and Mrs. Sturk came in carrying a large box. She
said they were doing so well they now had new uniforms for the
waitresses and servers. She took a uniform out of the box. It was
a white top with puffed sleeves and a black skirt. The collar was
lace trimmed. It looked like the skirt would come to the knees. She
said this was for the waitresses to wear starting immediately.
She handed out the three dresses apiece to the two waitresses.
Then she took out a pink outfit and when she held it up everyone
could see it was a French maids' outfit. She held it in one hand
and held a full petticoat in her other hand. Everyone could see the
name Barbie embroidered in black on the uniform. She said the
present aprons were to be replaced with little heart shaped white
ones with pink lace. She handed the uniform to Barbie and told him
to go put it on so everyone could see how nice it looked. He went
to put it on.
He was putting it on and found he couldn't zip up the back. He got
everything on and went back to the kitchen. Mrs. Sturk told him to
do a turn and when he did she saw it wasn't zipped. She zipped it
up and he knew he was a prisoner in it until someone unzipped it.
The meeting ended and Mrs. Hancock told him she had to talk to
him. They were alone in the kitchen. She had him sit down in a
chair and then she sat down facing him. She took his hands in hers.
"Something has to be done about you. You have to get help. You
can't continue to go on like this. When was the last time you ate?
I fix every meal here and I don't remember making anything for you
for the last two days at least. Where and when have you eaten
last?"
"I don't remember. I just haven't been hungry. I don't know what
to do."
He sounded so pathetic that her heart went out to him. She took
his hand and held it to her cheek.
"You have to see a doctor, that is for sure. You have to see one
right away."
"I don't have any insurance or money to pay a doctor."
"I am going to call Doctor Burton. His office is less than a half
mile from here. You will go and see him. I will tell him to send me
the bill if he has to. I am sure he will be able to help you. You
must go right away. Come on, I will tell them you can't clean
today. My house is one block from Dr. Burton's office. Here is a
key to the front door and my address. I want you to go there after
you see the doctor. I will be home later to check on you. I always
go home for about an hour between lunch and supper. Now come with
me."
She led him out to the front desk, and when he was about to be
handed his list of rooms to clean she divided them up among the
other three girls. She told him the doctor's office was on the
right hand side.
He slowly walked towards the doctor's office. He hurt all over and
felt like he was going to faint. He made it to the office door and
stopped to think about if he should go in or not. He finally
decided to go in.
The receptionist took one look at him and immediately got the
doctor. The doctor came out to the reception area and took him
right back.
"Mrs. Hancock called me and told me I was going to have a patient
coming that needed immediate attention. What happened to you?"
"My wife went a little nuts last night. I am sure she didn't mean
it but she kicked me out of our apartment at the Amazon Hotel."
The doctor helped him get out of his clothes and couldn't believe
all of the wounds he had all over his body. When he saw his rear
and the open welts he immediately called the police. The doctor
asked him why he was wearing a dress with the name Barbie on it. He
explained his wife had forced him into it. When he said he felt
like he was going to faint the doctor asked him when he had eaten
last. He told him he didn't know but he wasn't hungry. The doctor
gave him a pill to take telling him it was a pain pill. The doctor
then made a phone call.
The doctor then put a soothing lotion on his rear. When the doctor
finished, he felt sleepy. He dozed as the doctor made another phone
call. He was just hanging up when a policeman entered. He explained
that he had to report any possible abuse and he had what looked
like a case of abuse. The doctor showed the policeman his body and
all the puncture wounds and his rear end with the open welts. The
policeman said he had to get his camera to document this. He was
soon taking pictures of everything.
As he was finishing up Thomas stated to wake up. He didn't know
where he was. Doctor Burton explained where he was and said a
policeman had a few questions for him. The officer asked him about
two dozen questions then told him not to go back to the hotel. He
said that was the only place he knew, but that Mrs. Hancock had
given him a key to her house.
The policeman said, "Mabel Hancock! Definitely go to her house.
She is the best person you could possibly have to help you get over
this. I have the greatest respect for that crusty old woman!"
A man arrived and the receptionist showed him in. It was Brad
Harmon, the same attorney that had handled Uncle Peter's estate.
Doctor Burton told him he better help or the doctor would give him
something that would keep him on the toilet for two days.
The doctor, the policeman and Brad listened as he told about going
from painting the rooms to serving and cleaning, and how his wife
and Mrs. Sturk had hired the girls with instructions to put him in
a dress, to how his wife had taken the pants and shirt that he had
bought. When he told about how she had kicked him out and made him
go to the staff room the doctor said that was terrible.
The policeman said he had to go make his report. The doctor told
Thomas that he was suffering from depression, besides his physical
problems. The doctor told him he had three medications for him. He
said the first was a pain pill for the pain. The second was a
muscle relaxant to help him rest, and the third was for depression.
He told him he wanted to see him in three days.
The doctor helped him get dressed and took him out to the
receptionist He talked in a low tone to his receptionist then told
him that she would take him to Mrs. Hancock's house.
The receptionist took him to Mrs. Hancock's house and helped him
get inside. She made sure he was comfortable there before she left.
She gave him a card with his next appointment on it. He sat in a
recliner and reclined. Five minutes later he was asleep.
Meanwhile back at the hotel it was lunchtime and when Harriet
didn't see Barbie she wondered where he was. She so much wanted to
see what he looked like in his new uniform. She asked Sara where he
was hiding and Sara said she hadn't seen him since the meeting this
morning.
Harriet went to look for him. She looked into the kitchen and
didn't see him. Mrs. Hancock smiled, knowing what she was looking
for. She went to the staff room and he wasn't there. She walked the
halls looking for him and couldn't find him. Then she was sure she
knew exactly where he was. She headed for the fourth floor. He
wasn't there.
She was heading for the hotel office when five police officers
came in. A man in a suit who identified himself as Detective
Hammond handed her a search warrant. He told her to look at it if
she wanted, then told her she was under arrest. Mrs. Sturk came out
of the office and was surprised to see a policeman handcuffing
Harriet. He was reading her her rights.
The detective was called up to the second floor punishment room.
When they got to the second punishment room with the cages they saw
the blood on all the needles. An officer took blood samples to
check that it was his blood.
Mrs. Hancock looked out just as officers were carrying a cage out
of the hotel. She smiled and headed for the back door and her car.
She headed home as usual. She was surprised when she saw red
flashing lights in back of her.
It was Officer Keating, who laughed and told her she was a hero to
get Thomas to go to the doctor. He told her he thought she should
get an award for her part in everything. She said she should have
stopped it earlier but she never thought it would end like this. He
told her she should be congratulated anyway and wished her a great
day.
When she got home she found him sleeping in the chair. She made
him a sandwich and a glass of milk and went to wake him. When she
woke him she told him to eat the sandwich. He started to eat it and
he readily took a drink of milk.
She told him she still had some clothes from her husband. She came
out with a pair of pants, a belt and a shirt for him. When he had
finished eating she unzipped him and showed him to a bedroom where
she said he could sleep. He changed into the clothes she gave him.
Everything was big on him, but the pants didn't fall down.
She told him she didn't have time to give him a big tour but to
feel free to look around, that he could find something to eat for
supper in the refrigerator. She had to get back to the hotel.
Back at the hotel everyone was buzzing about what had happened.
The police were still there and interviewing different people.
Penny, Sara and Johanna were interviewed for a long time. They all
got tears in their eyes as they told their stories. Detective
Hammond asked Mrs. Sturk for the employment records for the last
six months. She said it would take until tomorrow for her to get
them. He told her that would be fine, and to call when he could
pick them up.
Mrs. Sturk went and talked to Mabel Hancock. "I can see your hand
in all of this. What do you have to say for yourself?"
"What makes you think I had anything to do with any of this?"
"I know you and I know you would never let anyone be hurt without
doing something! Now I don't blame you. I personally think Harriet
went too far. Do you know where he is so we don't have to search
the whole building for him?"
"He is safe. I just sent him to Doctor Burton to see to his
wounds. He must have called the police."
"No doubt he did. I really didn't care for what was going on but
it wasn't up to me. Harriet listened to those doms who stay here
and believed she could do anything she wanted to her husband. I
heard Penny telling about how she kicked him out of their apartment
upstairs. I didn't know anything about it until then. I can't
believe she actually put him in the needle cage. It was just for
scaring the subs. I don't think any Dom ever used it because it was
too much even for them."
"Well what is done is done. Now it's time for payment and I think
it is going to be an expensive payment."
"If you happen to see him, tell him if he needs any money to call
me. I am sure I can help him."
"If I should see him I will tell him."
All three girls entered the kitchen with red eyes. Mrs. Hancock
told them he was fine and getting the care he needed. They all
asked where he was and she told them he was where he was safe. They
felt better hearing that.
Mrs. Sturk came into the kitchen and told everyone she was going
to bail Harriet out of jail. She said she would be back in a half
hour. She left and all three girls laughed at the idea of Harriet
in jail.
When Harriet walked in everything got quiet. It was as if a storm
had entered and caused a blackout. She sat quietly down and a
waitress took her order. When it was ready Penny took it to her.
Penny asked, "Was it bad?"
"Yes, it was. In order to get out I had to sign that I would stay
at least five hundred feet from him but if I see him I will break
his neck for what he made me go through."
Penny walked away wondering if she really would do that. The
supper time ended and the girls were eating their suppers when Mrs.
Hancock came and told them everything was being taken care of for
him. She said she had talked to the doctor and he said that Thomas
was very depressed but would get over it. She said all he needed
was time to heal both physically and mentally. The girls were happy
to hear that.
Mrs. Hancock arrived at home to find him watching television. He
told her he didn't remember the last time he had watched
television. She told him Harriet had been arrested for what she had
done to him. He said he hoped she wasn't angry at him for that.
Mrs. Hancock told him she wouldn't go anywhere hear her if she was
him. He said maybe he should just go back but Mrs. Hancock told him
he couldn't go anywhere until he saw the doctor again. He accepted
that.
Things settled down and three days later he went to see Dr Burton.
Dr. Burton told him he was healing nicely physically but that his
mental state left a little to be desired yet. The doctor told him
to go see Brad Harmon. He told him his office was two blocks down
and he would be expecting him.
When he got to Brad's office Brad told him that as he saw it his
marriage was over. He said he had started the paperwork for a
divorce. When Thomas said he didn't have any money to pay him Brad
told him not to worry about that because he would make it so
Harriet would pay his fees. He told him he was in contact with the
District Attorney's office and they had enough to get him just
about anything he desired. He didn't know if he wanted a divorce or
not. Brad told him to think about what had happened to him and if
he could say it was all right then they would have to look at
something else.
It took some talking but Brad convinced him his marriage was over.
He was crying and saying he didn't want it to end. Brad said he was
sure that Thomas would come out ahead in the deal.
The papers were served the next morning. Harriet called Brad
Harmon but he said that if she looked at the papers she would see
he was representing her husband. He recommended Thaddeus McCarthy
as her attorney.
She hung up and asked Mrs. Sturk if she knew of Thaddeus McCarthy.
She said he was a leading attorney in town. She called and set up
an appointment with him. When she explained her situation he asked
if she wanted him to represent her in just the divorce or in
everything including the charges from the district attorney. She
decided she'd better have him handle everything. He told her he
would get in touch with the district attorney's office and see what
they were looking at.
Two days later Thaddeus called her and said the DA's office had
filed eight charges against her including slavery, naming her as
owner of the Amazon Hotel. He said he was meeting with the person
who was handling the case from the DA's office in the afternoon. He
asked if she wanted to be there and suggested she accompany him to
answer any questions he might have so he could dispute any evidence
right away. She agreed and he told her to be at his office at one.
When they were meeting with the DA's man Thaddeus couldn't believe
some of the things that he was told were included in the charges.
He received sworn statements from employees of the hotel and when
he looked at the pictures of her abuse he knew this was going to be
a hard one to win. Then they were taken to the evidence area and he
saw the cages and benches with handcuffs attached. When he saw the
needle cage and was told she locked her husband in it he wondered
if it had been such a good idea to take this case.
Harriet told him she only used the bench and the one cage. He told
the DA's man that the rest was inadmissible in court. THE DA's man
told him he would have to take that up with the judge as Claussen
vs. Herbert was a precedent that allows everything to be admitted
as evidence.
After they had left Thaddeus asked her if she had really put her
husband in the needle cage. She said she was so angry with him that
she had. She said she saw her husband doing women's work and that
it surprised her that he was such a wimp she just had to make him
be the man she thought she had married. He had allowed himself to
be humiliated and it was a disgrace to her.
Thaddeus told her there wasn't a judge he knew who would accept
that as a defense. He told her he must tell her she was in big
trouble, that she had crossed the line with her behavior. He told
her he would work to get her the best settlement he could. He
invited her to try another lawyer if she thought she could come out
of this with a better settlement.
"You are being honest with me. I know that. See what you can do,
I know I need all the help I can get."
Meanwhile, Mabel told Thomas that Mrs. Sturk had told her that if
he needed money he should call her. He did call and asked for two
hundred dollars. Mrs. Sturk said she would meet him at the Dairy
Queen store with the money. He went to meet her.
"I have to tell you I would never have done to you what was done.
I feel terrible about it. Your wife told me what to order and what
to get for you. I am not going to give you two hundred dollars but
I am going to give you five hundred dollars. I drew it out of my
bank account as soon as you called. You are looking a lot better
now. How do you feel?"
"I have felt better. The wounds are healing and don't hurt
anymore, just itch a lot. I should have stood up to her as soon as
she had those girls put me in a dress, but I didn't. Not hard
enough. I don't know what got into her."
"I think I know. She talked to two of the dominant women that stay
at the hotel on week-ends and they told her a woman's place is to
rule her husband completely. She got to believe she should totally
control you and what you wear and do. If only you had done a bad
job of cleaning or serving maybe things would have worked out
differently."
"I am used to doing the best job possible. I never thought about
doing a sloppy job."
"Well I want you to know my best wishes go with you. I hope you
get whatever you desire. I mean that!"
"Thank you for all of your help. It makes me feel better knowing
that the staff knows it wasn't my doing to wear a dress and do the
cleaning and serving."
"I do have to get back. If Harriet misses me I will have to come
up with a good excuse as to where I have been. Good luck!"
He felt tremendously better after hearing what she had to say. He
couldn't believe she had drawn the money out of her own account for
him.
He returned to Mrs. Hancock's house and got a call from Brad. Brad
told him his wife's attorney had called him and asked what he
wanted in the divorce. Brad asked if he had his permission to try
to get the best deal possible for him. He was given permission to
do that. Brad said he was going to try to get a non-standard
settlement for him.
Things were quiet for the next two weeks. Then Brad called two
days before their first divorce hearing. He told him he thought
they might have a possible settlement. He said Harriet wouldn't
contest a twenty-five thousand dollar payment for humiliation, pain
and suffering and an additional fifteen per cent ownership in the
hotel. He explained that under state law he already owned fifty per
cent of the hotel and that now he would be the majority owner. He
told him also she would pay his legal fees. He said he held out for
seventy-five per cent but could only get sixty five. He said this
in his mind wasn't the worse deal. He told him to think it over.
He told Brad it sounded good to him. He asked when this would be
finalized and Brad said that if the court approved then it would be
at the first hearing, but that they would have to go back one more
time for the judge to declare them divorced.
When he told Mrs. Hancock about the deal she was thrilled. She
said she hoped he would get the whole hotel but now at least he had
a controlling interest. She laughed and said he should move back
into HIS hotel. He didn't think that would be a bad idea.
The divorce hearing went smoothly and when it was over he was
handed a check and a paper declaring him the majority owner of the
hotel. He thought Harriet looked like she hadn't slept for a week.
She looked frazzled, like she hadn't seen a hairdresser in ages.
She definitely wasn't the woman he had married those years ago. She
had aged tremendously.
When Mrs. Hancock came home between lunch and supper she found a
dozen yellow roses on the dining room table and a card leaning
against the vase. She opened the card and it read- To a wonderful
lady and friend, Thank you so much for all of your help. I really
appreciate it.-Thomas. She got tears in her eyes. Then when she
went into the living room she was shocked to see a big screen
television sitting there.
Thomas came walking in and impulsively she grabbed him and gave
him a kiss. He told her he knew she always watched television when
she got home so he figured she should have a big screen one.
He told her he had called Mrs. Sturk and told her that he was
going to be at the hotel at nine the next morning to set something
up. When he was asked if he was going to move back in he told her
he was. He said he had given some thought to the matter and had
decided that maybe all he had to do was be the host or hostess at
the hotel.
She asked why he said host or hostess and he said it really wasn't
so bad after awhile wearing a dress. He asked her if she thought he
was crazy to want to wear a dress and she said he was free to do as
he pleased. Then with a laugh she said he really did look cute in
a dress.
The next morning at nine he was there. Mrs. Sturk told him Harriet
would stay in her apartment until he left. He took her up to the
second floor to the two punishment rooms and asked if a doorway
could be put between the two rooms. She said it wouldn't be a
problem. He then asked if the next room could be joined to these
two rooms to make a three room apartment for him. She asked why he
wasn't taking the fourth floor and he said it just didn't appeal to
