Wyoming Trucking, 3
By: Malissa Madison 01/30/2013
We locked into the new blower and refueled while one of the State Barn
officials signed over the ownership of the plow blade. As soon as we
got ready to head back Darlene asked, "Momma you want me to just push
everything in the cleanup lane?"
"No Honey, just follow me. I don't want the guys to have to clear snow
out of the blower before they can pull and swap the Augers out. But
thanks for asking."
Unlike the night before I was running with the blade on a fifteen
degree angle to clear a wider path. Last night we'd all been running a
thirty degree angle that only cleared the driving lane we were in and
let us run much faster.
The States regular plows didn't have Blowers, but they were busy
spreading sand and salt behind us and cleaning up the sides.
"Momma why aren't they out here pushing this snow, instead of us? They
have blades," Darlene said.
"They didn't start soon enough," I told her. "It's too deep for a
conventional blade to clear. You know how you had to fight to hold Mack
straight last night?"
"Yeah the snow kept trying to push me out into the driving lane," she
answered.
"Their trucks are too light. They need a clear lane on one side to give
them traction and better control," I explained.
By the time we got back Red and Rose had finished up their task. And we
dropped the Mack at the Stop and headed home to get some rest while the
blade was fixed.
"How's that old Mack running Sis?" Red asked.
"She's ready to start throwing snow, but please stop calling her Mack.
I like Mackenzie better, it sounds sweet."
"Yeah well don't get too used to her, Dad won't want you driving
something that old when you hit the road for real."
"Red Wing Wyoming, apologize to your sister right now."
"I'm sorry sis, really I am," he hugged her.
"Apology accepted," she kissed his cheek. "Now when we get to the stop
tell Mackenzie you're sorry for calling her old."
He rolled his eyes but I knew he would do it. he really did care about
his Sister, he was trying to find her something for Christmas and her
Birthday still and wanted it to be special.
We were about half way finished with the roads, letting the state plows
take care of the major highways when we heard from Tim and Jill.
"How do you like throwing snow, instead of just pushing it?" Jill asked
Darlene. "Is that blower running ok?"
"The blowers great, Mom. And Mackenzie is working hard, but keeping up
to the task," she answered.
"Mackenzie? We only name trucks we're keeping," pointed out Tim.
"I want her Daddy, Please."
"Happy Birthday then Honey. But that's not all you're getting," He
said.
Before Jill could jump in I said, "I got her the blower to go with it."
"Damnit, how am I going to top you two now?" Jill asked.
"Take me to get my license next week for my birthday," Darlene piped
up.
"I'll even buy you a car for the occasion," Jill giggled.
"You two talking or pushing snow?" Long Dog asked. "That Freightliner
isn't going to make it Tim. He's starting to belch smoke."
"Hey Dog, good to hear you're still with them," I said.
"Yeah well that's cause I take care of my truck. We lost four right off
that couldn't handle the cold or the loads."
We talked for a while, then got back to serious driving. It had started
snowing again but not as intense as before.
"Beauty, how close are you to home?" Lorelei asked, I could hear a
strain in her voice.
"I'm about thirty minutes out, what's up?"
"My water broke," She answered.
"No way, Mom I swear I turned on the line heaters," Red began in
disbelief.
"Not that Water Son," I told him. "Who's closest to home?"
Rose was, and I told her to head in, that Darlene and I were right
behind her.
"No way am I missing getting to see my Niece born," Red began. He was
twenty seven miles out on State 338 running out the side roads. "I've
just got two more and then I'm heading in," he called out.
"Ok Son but don't rush it there's still loads of time before we have to
worry," I told him.
"I know Mom, but I don't want to chance," I could hear the loud
crashing, and his yelling. "Ohhhh Fuck meeeee."
"Red, Red!" I yelled into the live link. I was already slowing down to
turn around.
"Momma, where was he?" Darlene wanted to know.
"Red stop screwing around it's not funny," Rose yelled.
"Ok everyone calm down. Rose go on to the house, Lorelei needs you
right now. Darlene and I will get Red, now go I want you to call me
when you get there."
"Red," I said very calmly as I keyed the radio mike, Please talk to me
Son."
I thought I heard something along with rushing water. I'd finished
making my turn seeing Darlene swing around behind me.
My phone began ringing about two minutes later.
"Red, Red is that you?"
"M, Momma, I'm sorry I, Damn it hurts."
"Red talk to me," I could hear water more clearly now.
"I lost the plow Momma," He said.
"Red where are you?" I prompted him.
"I'm on 338, last side road on the," I heard another crash and twisting
metal. "Momma the bridge collapsed, I'm sorry about the truck and the
blower."
"Listen to me Red Wing Wyoming, do you have the survival kit?"
"Y, yes,"
"Are you in the truck still?"
"Can't get out Momma, part of the bridge is on the door."
"Red listen to me, you open the bottle and take small sips. It'll keep
you warm. We're on our way. Hang in there," I kept the phone line open,
"Darlene, I'm talking to him on the phone. He's in the truck, but the
bridge collapsed with him. he can't get out. I need you to stay close
and start trying to get someone on the radio."
"I will Momma just hurry please," she pleaded. "Anyone who can hear me
this it Wyoming trucking. We need help on State 338, One of the Bridges
collapsed," She began.
"Rose, Honey how are you doing? Are you getting close?"
"Almost there Momma, please hurry."
"Darlene, if he went in, on the bridge there's only one place he can
be. Can you reach the Tomahawk on the radio?"
"We're here Missy, where's he at?" I didn't recognize the voice right
off.
"338 dash thirteen. It's the only one with a bridge," I answered.
"Shit, that bridge was condemned last summer, they were supposed to put
up road blocks, it's a dead end on the other side."
"Red, talk to me, are you still hanging in there? is the truck stable
where it's at?"
"I, I can't see anything Momma. I'm scared," I was now more afraid for
him, since he never admitted to being scared.
"Ok do me a favor, tell me where it hurts," I said as calmly as I
could.
"My, my ribs. And, and my head," he answered.
"Ok Son look at your hand and tell me how many fingers you see," I
wanted to try to see if he had a head injury.
"I, oh god, I can't see it momma. I can't see anything," I could hear
the panic starting to set in.
"You mean it's too dark in the truck?"
"M, Momma I just opened the phone and said Momma." He was getting shaky
and I knew we had to hurry. "I'm sorry about the truck Momma."
"Red, I don't care about the truck. I only have one son, now you stop
freaking out on me and stay calm. Take a long drink from that bottle
you hear me?"
"Momma, I see him!" Darlene was anxious to get there. I slid to a stop
just short of the bridge. He'd made it about a third of the way across
before the span under him collapsed.
I ran out to the edge, stopping short of the truck. The span ahead was
on top of the cab and it didn't look too stable. I could see the blower
was the only thing keeping the cab halfway above water.
Darlene shot past me jumping onto the back of the truck, "Be careful,"
I yelled to her. "We don't know how stable it is."
"I don't care Momma I'm not letting some dumb ass river take my
Brother."
She slipped twice on the ice covered frame before reaching the back of
the cab. "Darlene can you reach him?"
"No Momma, but I can hear him."
"I'm going to turn Beauty around. We'll use the winch on the back deck
to hold it steady," I hurried and turned my truck around backing as
close as I dared to the derelict bridge. Then dragged my wench cable to
the rear of Beater and hooked it into the frame where the under ride
bumper was attached. Then took up the slack. Together Darlene and I
worked our way around the sides, I managed to reach through part of the
driver's window, and hold onto him.
"I'm here Son, Momma's here." He tried a false smile turning his head
toward me and I almost panicked myself, seeing the blood running down
his face. Then I realized the only thing holding him into the seat was
the seatbelt.
"Momma, I can get him out on this side," Darlene said she was busy
doing something I couldn't see. Then the passenger door flopped open,
and she was fastening bungee cords together hooking them to the inside
of the dash frame.
"Tell me when you're ready sweetie, I'll have to cut the seatbelt." Red
had gone unconscious.
"Less than a minute later she said, "Let me get a hold of him" then,
"Ok now Momma I've got him."
I pulled the little knife out of my boot and cut the belt as quickly as
I could. Then holding onto his jacket tried to help hold his weight as
Darlene guided him toward the open door.
Between the two of us we managed to get him up over the back of the
truck and onto the bridge. As we started pulling him toward her truck
the cable snapped tight. And beauty slid backwards about four feet.
Pushing Darlene to the ground over the top of him, I ducked as the
under ride bumper pulled loose, to slingshot over our heads into the
back of the cab. Beater rolled over under the weight of the bridge
span, the plow blade finally twisting free of the hookups as truck and
all sank below the water.
"Christ on a crutch, that was fucking close," I heard someone say. I
looked up to see a State Trooper standing over us. He knelt quickly
spreading a blanket over Red. "We got an airlift coming in Ma'am,
they'll get him to the hospital."
They were just loading him into the Helicopter when almost everyone
from the Truck stop arrived.
"Go," Hatchetman said, "We'll get the trucks back for you." I was numb,
I'd almost lost one of my kids. I began to shake, and then the tears
came.
"We're diverting to the Reservation, this storm is hitting too hard for
us to make it into the hospital," the pilot was telling the crew. "It's
barely snowing up there, and it's closer. That kid needs a doc bad,"
And then my world went black.
"Missy, He's ok, he's going to be just fine," I heard Doc Cambridge
saying. "Just a few broken ribs and a mild concussion."
I realized I was missing some time, I couldn't remember getting there
or the flight.
"Momma, I'm going to be ok, really," I realized I was in hospital bed.
Red was sitting in a chair next to me, a bandage on his head and around
his rib cage.
"Red, oh god I thought we lost you."
He half smiled, "It'll take more than the Tongue River to stop me."
I saw a sleeping form beside him, and recognized the top of Running
Water's head. "See, what'd I tell you. You made the right choice," I
squeezed his hand.
A few minutes later Lorelei came in carrying Star Over Water. "Hey
Grandma, meet your first granddaughter," she said laying her in my
arms.
After a few minutes I decided I wasn't wasting another minute in that
bed. Then I had to talk to Tim and Jill, I didn't want them to panic.
Before I got out of the clinic though we had to talk to both Frank and
Joseph.
"Missy, I want you to know that it was the States fault. They didn't
ever put up the roadblocks after they condemned the bridge. He had no
way of knowing it was that bad," Frank told me.
I was beginning to get my wits about me again. "Frank I know it wasn't
his fault, but still he could have, hell he almost was killed because
they fucked up."
"Missy, We're investigating to find out who is responsible. I promise
we'll find out," I cut him off.
"Frank, I really don't give a flying fuck who's responsible. This is
the second time that the State almost cost me one of my kids. They
aren't getting a third chance, our plows stay on the reservation until
Tim gets home. Then hopefully someone with half a brain in the Highway
Department will have some explanations for him," I paused and someone
out in the hallway started to say something as they entered the room.
"Now Mrs Wyoming," I glared at the State Highway Official, Bob only a
split second before I was out of the bed and slamming my fist into his
face.
"I'm not talking to him Frank. I'm going home with my Family, and I
don't want to see or hear from anyone about doing my fucking Civic Duty
bullshit," I began getting dressed only to turn and see Bob still
sitting in the floor staring at me, his mouth wide open in disbelief. I
leaned over in his face. "Get up, and get out before I do more than
knock you on your ass," Frank grabbed his arm hauling him to his feet.
"Sh, She's a, a, freaking Tranny," I heard the sound of a fist
connecting with a jaw out in hallway.
"She's a woman Bob, and you're in the wrong place to say anything
different. I keep trying to tell you, you need to learn more about
Native American Culture, because her and everyone like her are very
highly regarded by these people, and I for one happen to admire her and
everyone like her."
"Can I go home, Dr Cambridge?" I asked.
"Of course you can, you're just in that bed because you collapsed on
the flight here. and they gave you a mild sedative."
"Tim? Oh god we have to get hold of Tim before he freaks out."
"It's ok Momma, I talked with Daddy, and he's talked to Red," Darlene
told me.
"I, I let him down. one of our children got hurt while he was away."
"Missy, unless you want me to give you another shot you need calm down.
Tim knows it wasn't your fault, Joseph and Frank talked to him too," Dr
Cambridge said.
"But Red got hurt, we lost a truck and plow," I started saying.
"Yes and like any real Mother, you got him out. You and Darlene, before
the truck went the rest of the way in."
Red was hugging Darlene tightly on his good side, "Momma I remember you
there holding onto me so I wouldn't slip before she got a good hold on
me. and I remember you pushing her down on top of me."
"But what about your vision?" I asked.
"I can see Mom," he said. I'd thought he was holding onto Darlene
because he was blind.
"It was the shock and the concussion Missy. He's fine, or I wouldn't be
letting him go home with the rest of you. And as for you and Darlene, I
want you to both wear gloves for the next week at least. You both
nearly got frostbite on your fingers."
We all managed to make it home, Rose enjoying her new role as chief
cook and bottle washer. But I knew it would only be a brief period
before I was back to running my household.
I'd lost my Cell phone in the river getting to Red, and Darlene's had
been badly damaged when she'd slid down the rear deck into the back of
the cab.
So when Tim called I was using the house phone in the Master Bedroom.
"Tim I'm sorry I let you down, I'm just glad we were able to get Red
out. I don't know what I'd have done, how I could stand to face Lark in
the Higher Plains if I hadn't."
"Let me down, Missy Wyoming, how the hell did you let me down? you did
everything you could. Red is alive, So we lost a Truck and a Blower,
big deal. I'd rather have my Children and their Mom than the truck," He
let that sink in. "Jill and I are laying up here at Coldfoot for the
night. Why don't you put us on speaker so we can all talk at the same
time?"
We had a big family meeting, and Lorelei got to see just how much she
was included as part of it. Jill had called Wolf while Tim was talking
to Rose, Joseph and Frank, and he would be there by morning.
Then he said he'd already talked with the Director of highway safety
and transportation. The state was replacing Beater with a brand new
Kenworth, and Blower Plow blade, as well as paying for Hoppers new
hitch plate.
Then he told me that when they got back he was going to follow me in to
get the back of Beauty's Sleeper repaired.
"Tim Beauty didn't get damaged," I said bewildered.
"Love, she's got a four foot opening where the under ride bumper hit,
Frank sent me the pictures."
"Tim, why are they doing all this? That's a hell of a lot of money."
"It would cost them even more if we took them to court over the safety
issues as well as the fact they failed to block that bridge off," he
said matter of factly. "I'll be surprised if our local highway boss,
Bob still has a job tomorrow."
After a minute he said, "Missy, I'm proud of you. I couldn't have done
anything any better if I'd been there, and I won't waste time trying to
find any better way you could have handled it. and you better not let
me find out you've been doing the same thing. You did good, Jill and I
are both proud of you."
It had quit snowing and we'd gotten all the major roads cleared and
people with their own blades on the front of trucks were taking care of
the private roads and back roads. So we stayed home and waited for them
to get back.
Every time Star so much as looked like she was about to make a fuss she
had five people there ready to do whatever she needed. Even Red got
into the act of changing diapers and rocking her to sleep.
There was no end of people coming by to see how we were doing, and to
see the newest addition. The kids were getting cabin fever by the time
school reopened, and Red's ribs were healing fast.
Running Water made the trek every day on the families snow mobile to
check on him and to hold Star. I caught her giving Red looks that told
me she was already thinking about how much she would like to have one
with him.
Gladys called on the day they got back. "Missy they're refueling right
now. And damn if they hadn't made me promise, I'd tell you what Jill's
got strapped down to her trailer. But I did promise."
I looked at the calendar and saw what day it was, then I winked at
Lorelei and said I was going to get the cake decorated. I'd baked it
the night before in hopes they would be home.
There was no mistaking the sounds of both Blowers throwing snow as they
came up the hill to the house. they cleared the turnaround for Jill so
she could back the trailer up to the driveway.
Seeing the tarp covered shape on the back I had to smile, watching
Darlene bare foot and still wearing her Baby Doll nitie run out to
greet them, Dark Shadow bouncing around her legs yipping playfully.
"Happy Birthday," Jill said as they hugged.
"You done good kiddo," Tim greeted her with a hug of his own as the
rest of us came out to watch.
Soon the little red Mustang was setting on the ground in the driveway.
Darlene was crying seeing it, "I, Mom it's so pretty, thank you."
"Every girl deserves to get a Pony for her Sixteenth birthday," Tim
said. "But you can't take your test yet."
"But Daddy, I'm ready!"
"Not dressed like that you aren't," he smacked her bottom gently. "Go
get dressed and eat breakfast first."
It hit me they'd driven all night to get here at dawn for her big day.
At the table Tim asked, "Do you really want to keep that old Mack?"
"Her Name is Mackenzie, Daddy. And yes I really like her," Darlene
answered.
"Well if she has a name we can't get rid of her now." He was smiling.
"So what are we going to name the Kenworth when it gets here?" Darlene
asked.
"That's up to your brother, but I'm sure she'll reveal her true name in
time," Tim told me.
Jill and Darlene made it home, bringing Cashew Chicken, Egg Rolls, and
Refried Rice for everyone. Darlene showed off her new Birthday outfit
that Jill had bought her. the jeans were so snug they left almost
nothing to the imagination, especially when combined with the new knee
high four inch heeled boots. And the low cut sheer tan, long sleeve
blouse. She was giggling in delight, as she posed for us.
Then Rose began to gush over her new long sexy red nails, and her hair
do.
We'd just cut the cake when Sleeping dog Showed up. "Roll your tongue
back up into your mouth son," advised Tim.
He swallowed hard and handed her a small wrapped present. When she
unwrapped it she found a hand carved Truck with plow blade on the
front.
"I'll pick you up in the morning for school," he told her. then she
turned pink and giggled.
"Momma Jill go me a Pony. But it only holds four. So I'll meet you
there," then she kissed him and it seemed to drag out forever. His
hands holding her bottom firmly.
Tim and Jill spent the next three weeks making their regular hauls.
Then just before Christmas, Hatchetman called.
"Missy, is Tim there? I got a state rig down here with a delivery for
y'all," he said.
"It's here?"
"Yes, it is," he answered.
"Tim, Jill. Get the kids, we have to go get Red's new truck."
Nikki and Long Dog had pulled in right behind it, and were busy trying
to tell them how best to unload the new Blower when we got there.
Handing the keys to Red, Tim said, "Go check it over Son, she's yours."
Red did a thorough walk around of the sleek black Kenworth T660,
checking all the compartments. Then checked the tires, the airlines,
the trailer hookups. Climbed up on the back deck and inspected the
hitch plate. Next he got behind the wheel and ran through a systems
check before starting it up.
When it was idling he checked out the interior and the sleeper living
area. I climbed up to see what it was like so I would have a good idea
what he would need when we went north. Running Water opened the sleeper
door looking inside.
"Wow, there's like lots of room in here," she said. then sat down on
the bunk as I pulled it out from the wall. With a giggle she bounced
her bottom on it. "This is really nice."
I winked at her. "Yeah it is." Then I climbed back out so he could lock
into the plow and run a systems check on it as well.
"Ok Son why don't you run it on home and drop the plow in its cradle.
Then drive around a bit and get used to how she handles," Tim told him.
the new addition for the plow in the plow shed had been made already as
well as the added section of what we affectionately called the Tractor
Barn.
We walked to the Diner and sat while Tim went over all the Paperwork,
then signed taking legal possession of the new Truck and Plow.
"Have you seen Running Water?" asked Gladys. "That girl is supposed top
be waiting tables, and I can't find her anywhere."
Rose and Darlene giggled. "She was looking at Reds new Toy," rose said.
"I know I gave her permission to look it over. But that was," Gladys
stopped and asked, "It came with a Mattress on the bunk didn't it?"
"Now Gladys, we don't know that anything like that is happening," Jill
said. "They're probably just out driving around."
Everyone else knew as well as I did that the truck didn't have any
radios installed yet. Smiling Sweetly she looked at Me, then at Tim and
Jill. "I'm too young to be a Grandma. And I doubt it came with a supply
of condoms."
As we waited, the rest of our little Trucking company arrived one by
one. the last to arrive was Little Elk. I saw Tim grinning as the
flatbed pulled up to the pumps.
He was hauling three, nearly new Blowers. After parking he joined us in
the larger section.
"Tim, you know how you told me I could spend," before he said the
Amount though Tim made a hush motion. "I need someone that hasn't hit
their Eight hours yet to haul ass over to Rapid City and pick up the
other two blowers," He handed Tim a thick folder of documents.
Looking around he asked, "Where's Red?"
"They just delivered the new T660 and the Blower," Tim replied. "He's
test driving it now."
Looking around Elk noted our missing waitress. "Probably test driving a
Crow Princess while he's at it," he chuckled. I saw Gladys roll her
eyes.
I got hold of the papers and looked quickly at the figures in the
expenses column. "Elk, you really got all Five of these for Three
Hundred Grand?" I asked.
"I tested each one before I agreed to anything," he said. "No one else
wanted them because they didn't have anything big enough to handle
them."
"Tim you realize this gives us Eleven Blowers? Granted these five are
the smaller versions like our old ones, but Eleven?" I was astonished.
We now had two extra's with no trucks or drivers to push them.
"Guess we need to add a couple more drivers then." He smiled at me and
I noticed Raven out of the corner of my eye. I could see the gears
turning in her head.
"Tim what are we going to do with that many blowers. We can't all run
the ice road."
"Not every run no. I figure we'll split the runs up, les wear and tear
on the trucks. We switch out the lead between stops. And the rest
handle the roads back here."
The way he said it, it made sense. But I knew he was thinking that he
would be making each run up north. With one of us along as his backup,
Tim wasn't the kind of man to let his family go into such dangerous
territory without him. and no matter how much I thought about how close
things had come for us so far this year, I knew it was compounded by
the fact most of the roads up there weren't on the maps. Hell they
weren't even paved. The only thing that made them passable was being
frozen solid.
The last thing you needed on a dirt and gravel based road in winter was
Salt. Especially with that many trucks in convoy. They'd actually tried
it the first few years, and it had been more disastrous than driving it
without plows.
The beauty of having four plows along on a run was that two could peel
off on the side roads, leading those trucks in while the rest continued
on at a leisurely pace until they caught up, or bunker down and wait.
No need to take the whole convoy into each place. Then on the return
they could slow down and pick up the returning trucks.
We kept the conversation going as we waited for Red to come back with
Running Water. I noticed old Hatchetman standing out near the pumps
like he was waiting for something.
"Hey Dad, I'm coming in to top off before I take her home," Red finally
called.
Gladys glanced nervously toward Hatchetman, the two making eye contact
before he pulled his coat on and stepped fully outside toward the first
row of pumps and the warm pump Jockey shack.
"Tim?" I got his attention. "Do you think maybe,"
"Yes, isn't it obvious? I mean Gladys has never said who her father is.
But then as protective as he is, she doesn't have too," Tim answered.
When I saw him pulling off the highway I hurried and went out to
intervene if needed.
Pulling up to the pumps, Red jumped out seeing the truck stop owner
standing in front of his stopped truck, his arms folded in front of his
chest.
"Hey Hatch, she handles like a dream," my son began. Then followed his
eyes up to where Running Water was just descending from the drivers
seat.
Hatchet man held out his hand as he stepped to the foot of the last
step and Running water took it for support. But he didn't let go, he
just held it gently as he stared into her eyes until she looked at the
ground.
Quickly I stepped forward and placed Reds hand atop of hers and the
father looked over at me. I nodded my consent to the betrothal.
Without any comments Hatchetman took out his worn bandana and wound it
around their joined hands. Then with his other hand he lifted Running
Water's chin to look again into her eyes. "Go tell your Mother the
happy news my Daughter," Then he kissed her cheek and began the chore
of filling Reds new truck with number 2 deisel.
I kissed his cheek. "Thank you," I said, and he laughed.
"What else could I do Missy? They are happy together, even the old
woman knows it is meant to be," I followed his gaze to where Rain the
Spirit Woman strolled across the lot toward the diner. She'd come to
bless the new union between two of her people.
"You will care for her every need?" I heard Gladys ask as I came into
the diner. Turkey and Fox, Running waters older sisters stood smiling
and I wondered why for only a brief moment before remembering they were
just as traditional as we were.
Then I saw the youngest of her sisters hugging her mother. "Don't worry
Cold Winter's too young still," Gladys said. she was only nine, and I
wondered which of the young boys would catch her heart.
"I'm not worried," I pointed to where Bird Catcher was trying to get
Roses attention. Rose was pretending not to notice him.
"Why aren't you worried Missy?" she asked me.
"Because they've all promised me they will finish school, no matter
what."
They weren't married yet, but I knew it would only be a matter of time
as I watched everyone wishing them well as they walked hand in hand to
his truck.
"Excuse me, I need to go with them to welcome her when they get there,
but I'll be sure she gets to work in the morning," Gladys kissed my
cheek.
"She doesn't work until Monday evening," Gladys reminded me. "So you
get to listen to them all weekend."
"Mommy, does this mean I get my own room now?" Cold Winter asked.
"Yes Sweetheart, now go tell your brother to stop flirting with Rose
and start getting things ready for the night cook," The little girl
rushed over to Bird Catcher and they hurried into the back.
I climbed up into the passenger seat and hugged Running Water. "Are you
prepared to make his breakfast in the morning?"
She giggled. "You mean he eats breakfast? I thought he skipped it by
the way he eats the rest of the day."
"Of course he does," I traded seats with her, and went to sit on the
fold down bed. She blushed as my butt was slowly soaked by the wet spot
they'd left there judging by the size I was sure he'd more than
satisfied her.
I tried to steel myself to the fact that the couple would be going back
and forth between the two homes until they were married, and had a home
of their own. Then it hit me, I wasn't ready for that, not really.
Lying in bed listening to the sounds of the young couple trying to be
quiet, I asked Tim, "Why didn't Gladys ever get married to Hatchetman?"
"He was married to her older sister, Frost on Leaves. But Frost died
giving birth to Turkey," He explained. "Gladys had Fox the year before,
and by custom they are married since they have children together.
Neither of them saw the need to make it more formal. I wondered why I'd
never questioned it before, then realized that it really didn't matter,
because they and their children were happy.
By the second Ice Run, a huge storm was building up. Tim sat watching
the weather every night as we got ready for it. The kids would be out
of school for two weeks.
"I don't like the way this feels," he said to me. "Jill, I want you to
sit this one out here with the kids."
"You're right, it's going to be hairy up there," Jill agreed.
"Especially if it hits before you make the halfway point. But you still
need a third big blower along."
"That's why Darlene's going," He looked at Red, "Sorry son, you're
still healing up. And Sleeping Dog went along as Elks co-driver last
time so he knows the new routine."
"But Dad that means you and Mom won't have a co-driver."
"Son, I need you here helping keep the roads clear."
"I better get Mackenzie ready," Darlene said.
"Sweetie," interrupted Jill. "You need the big Blower, not the one you
push with her. She doesn't have the right hookups."
"Or the fuel line and tank heaters," I added.
Handing her the keys Jill said, "You trained to drive Ice Pack already.
And I'll have them run Mackenzie to the shop so she'll be ready by the
next run."
"I'm thinking we better head out early," Tim said. "Red, I trust you
and Rose to keep the roads clear here. You have Nikki and Raven to
help."
"We will Dad," he promised.
The five of us Six if you counted Darlene's co-driver left two days
later. There was just a light snow falling, but I could feel the
weather beginning to shift. It got heavier the farther north we went,
and though no one asked, we put our plows to use as a courtesy for
letting us pass without question. Then we started crossing over the
mountains between Alberta and British Columbia. We found ourselves
blowing snow most of the way helping the Canadians clear the mountain
passes as we continued on.
Then twenty miles north of Cranberry Junction on Canadian Hwy 37 Tim
yelled "Stop!" moments before we heard the sounds of Jumpers Blower
chewing Metal. There were seventeen trucks behind us. And the storm was
picking up speed.
"Missy, you and Darlene have the lead until we get to White horse and I
can swap out my Augers. I have a badly bent shaft," he told me. "She
won't turn."
I was glad we had our spares strapped down on the back decks. The
RCMP's were trying to find out who had abandoned the little car in the
middle of the roadway. One thing we liked about running up north
through Western Canada was they always sent at least one patrol along
with us in case of problems. It seemed like we'd had to dodge more
abandoned cars this year than ever before.
The reason this one had done so much damage was that it was head on in
the wrong lane. The Chrysler, Sebring Convertible had been completely
covered in snow, and hadn't been visible until the blade lifted it up
into the Augers of the blower. It had taken us twenty minutes to get it
pulled free and then off to the side for a wrecker to pick it up.
Darlene was wide eyed when she saw how much damage the engine block had
done.
We stopped in Whitehorse, and I took advantage of the time to call and
check on things back home.
"The kids are doing great," Jill said. "How about you guys?"
"You need to call and order Tim a new set of Augers. I doubt these can
be repaired. Hell I wouldn't trust them even if they could be," I told
her.
"What happened?" she wanted to know and I told her about it.
"The RCMP's are still trying to figure out who owned it and how it got
there, where the driver is," I said.
"So how's Darlene doing? I bet she's enjoying driving a real Blower."
"Let's just say the initial Rush is being worked out of her system as
we speak," I told her.
"Meaning I'm going to have some new stains on the mattress," she
laughed.
"Look, Tim says with all this ice coming down we're going to bunker
down and wait it out. I agree we don't need to be taking any
unnecessary risks," I told Jill. "We're getting a room at Yukon Jacks,
we'll let you know before we head back out again."
Shortly after I hung up Tim came in to say he'd called ahead and gotten
everyone set up with rooms, and Jumper's Blower was finally up and
running again.
Walking past Ice Pack I rapped on the side of the sleeper, just before
Tim called out, "Driver's up" Over the radio. We waited for all the
drivers to check in that they were ready. Then Tim led off to the line
of motels near the far edge of town. We would call in the morning
before we left to make sure we didn't leave anyone behind. Then our
three rigs were backed in and we ran the extension cords to the
Auxiliary heaters to keep them from freezing up overnight.
"Princess, you and Dog are in here with us," Tim told Darlene. "You
better get Shadow out of the truck so he has a chance to make his pit
stop before you bring him in the room."
She giggled, "I didn't think they would let him come into the room with
us."
"Darlene," I got her attention. "You better stay with him anytime he
isn't in the room or the truck. People in these parts shoot wolves and
ask later, especially if they don't see a collar."
When we were all finally in the room together Tim asked which of the
double beds I wanted.
"Closest to the door," I told him. "Darlene might need to be closer to
the bathroom."
"Momma we haven't gotten that far yet," she blushed.
"Yes but you were hoping too, I saw the disappointed look when you
found out we were sharing a room," I told her. "Now let's get ready for
bed, it's always Ladies first in the shower with your Daddy."
"Come on Son, let's go across the street and get our Ladies some Dinner
before that Diner closes down. We'll be back in a bit, you two take
your time," Tim said.
After they left I lead Darlene into the bathroom. "I know you weren't
going to try this without being prepared first. So let me help you."
We talked as I helped her get ready for Sleeping Dog. "I, Momma, I
really want to go all the way with him," she bit her lip looking at me
sheepishly.
"But?" I prompted.
"I, I really wanted my first time to be with someone I know is
experienced in Anal," she blushed again.
"You want your Daddy to be your first?" I lifted her eyes to meet mine.
"I do but I don't want to hurt Dogs feelings, I really do care for him,
and he cares for me too, we even talked about it. He's been holding
back because he's afraid of hurting me."
I hugged her tightly. "Are you saying you want me to teach him how to
be gentle at the same time your Daddy is with you?"
"Please?" her pleading eyes said all I needed to hear.
We Douched and showered. Then put on scanty nities barely finishing
before they returned with Dinner.
While Dog was in the shower Tim asked, "Missy did you and Darlene have
a good talk?"
"Yes we did, how about you and Sleeping Dog? Did he by chance ask you
if we should help them both learn be gentle?"
He reached out and caressed her cheek, I could see the tears
threatening to fall from the corners of his eyes. "It will be my honor
to teach you how to be a Woman for your Man," he told her.
I kissed her cheek and then Tim's. "And it will be my honor as well to
teach your Man how to be gentle for his Woman."
We ate dinner first letting the hot water build up before Tim took a
shower, as he started for the bathroom he said, "It's ok to start
without me, I won't be long."
The three of us cuddled up together on one bed and began with kissing
and heavy petting. I knew that Dog was experienced with conventional
boy girl sex. But neither he, nor Darlene had any real experience with
Transgender sex.
"Just go slow, we'll guide you," Tim said as he cuddled Darlene in his
arms to begin foreplay. Knowing what each other liked made it easier to
guide the young couple.
Tim guided our daughter to straddle his lap as I straddled Dog and
guided his hungry mouth to my breasts. I smiled seeing that Darlene's
were nearly the same size mine had been when Tim and I first made love.
Soon we were lying beside each other as our men kissed and nibbled
their way down our bodies, our arousal apparent as we both whimpered
and moaned with desire. I gasped with surprised pleasure when I felt
Sleeping Dog taking me into his mouth. He needed no guidance from me,
and I knew he and my daughter had at least gone this far. The real
surprise was when he gently began to ease his spit slicked finger into
my ass.
I turned my head to look into Darlene's lust glazed eyes as she
squeezed my hand. Then as I felt ready to move to the next step I
rolled over onto my hands and knees. Tim guided her over onto hers and
we were facing each other on the same bed as their tongues began the
pleasureful task of making us ready.
Without thinking I leaned in and began kissing her, our tongues soon
dancing in each other's mouths. I braced myself on one hand as I cupped
and massaged her young budding breasts. I was nearly whimpering with
carnal lust before finally I knew Tim was ready.
My mouth locked to hers in a deep passionate tongue probing kiss, I
held her as Tim slowly pushed into her for the first time, feeling
myself being filled as well. I used my muscles to stop Dog when he
would have plunged on into me, not wanting him to go faster than Tim
was going with our daughter. It was a slow agonizing wait, trying to
hold back until she was ready to be really fucked for the first time.
Breaking the kiss I said, "Nice and gentle, Baby," As I began to slowly
rock back and forth. "If it gets too uncomfortable just stop, Daddy
won't let you go any faster than you can handle though," I had to
giggle, seeing him reach around to grasp her stiff cock in his hand.
Sleeping Dog soon did the same to me.
Then after only a few moments Dog began to cum, his wild jerking
motions pushed me over the edge. Seeing us both cumming was like a
mental push for my daughter as she began to cum, her ass squeezing
Tim's cock as she thrust and twisted back and forth fucking into his
own thrusts.
I wasted no time twisting around pushing Dog onto his back as I peeled
off the condom and began sucking him, keeping his cock hard while she
kissed him, tears streaming down her face from her first deep orgasm.
"Ohhhh, god I love you Dog," Her mouth covered his, as they kissed.
Tim had slowed down to a steady slow agonized pace. I knew he was
fighting the urge to really pound her tight Ass.
When Dog's cock was once again fully hard I lifted my head to look into
her eyes. "Cowgirls Up time," I giggled. She looked stunned as Tim
quickly pulled out laying down next to Dog. Then pulled me up on top,
as She mounted her boyfriend's hard cock.
Leaning over we kissed and fondled each other until we both came. This
time more intense than the first. When she caught her breath I said,
"Trade me."
With a giggle she quickly switched places with me and we began all over
again. Tim and I never did make it to our own bed. Darlene and I were
having too much fun tag teaming our men, while Dark shadow lay in the
middle of the other bed watching. At one point I had to smack her ass
and tell her to stop trying too hard to be like I was. She was trying
desperately to deepthroat Sleeping Dogs cock.
"Baby, that's one thing that you will learn to do as time goes by. It
just takes longer to learn. Be patient ok?"
"Yes Momma," she giggled.
We let them sleep longer than we did the next morning, and when she
finally got out of bed she was sorer than she anticipated. I could see
Dog's worried looks, he thought he'd hurt her.
Clapping him on the shoulder as I went and started her a tub full of
hot water Tim said, "Carry her into the tub for a soak. She'll be fine,
trust me."
"We'll go start the trucks," Tim said. "And then go get breakfast."
I let Darlene soak in the hot water to ease away most of the soreness,
but she was still too sore to drive before we left.
Clearing the snow ahead of us as we headed for the jump off point for
the convoy took longer because we were teaching a new driver to run a
blower plow. The convoy organizer was getting nervous and called us
several times to make sure he was going to have blowers out front.
When we rolled in we could see why he was nervous, the snow was piling
up against the Rigs sitting waiting to roll out. The temperature was
about five degrees and we had a good twenty mile an hour wind coming in
from the northwest driving fresh snow so heavy we could barely see
fifty feet ahead of us.
"Any chance this is going to let up in the next two hours?" Tim asked.
"Not a chance in hell, it looks like you should get a break somewhere
around Living Good. But you better make it count, because the intensity
is going to increase," The weather forecaster told him.
"Great, just great," Tim said then getting on the radio he called for
all the Primary Drivers to meet in the Hanger at the private air strip
we were using as a staging point.
When we were all there he said, "Listen up everyone. They want us to
get started right away. This shit is supposed to intensify somewhere
around the time we hit Stevens Village," He paused. "Now who doesn't
have cleated chains, fuel line and tank heaters, and a survival kit?"
Three of the new drivers only had regular chains. Nine didn't have an
issued Survival kit.
"Ok you three will mix in with the rest I want at least two preferably
three trucks between you. That way if you get into trouble you aren't
all bunched up together."
"Ok over here for the Kits, we have extras if anyone needs them," the
kit consisted of a marker beacon, with a GPS locator, Rations, water, a
thermal blanket, and a Fifth of Brandy.
"Ok we roll out in ten minutes. I want every fifth truck to be a Fuel
Rig. Blowers two and Three will be widening the lane behind me,
everyone else stay in the center. Blowers four and five, you'll lead
the jump offs. Everyone knows your assigned delivery points you roll in
drop your trailers refuel and be ready for the return trip, Got it?"
Every one said 'yes.'
On our way to the trucks he asked, "You doing ok Baby Girl?"
"Yes Daddy, I can handle it."
"Good, you're blower two tonight. You'll change off with your Momma at
Living Good crossing."
I could see her excitement at being the number two plow in line. The
way things worked, we would hold up at the jump offs until the other
two plows returned. This meant we had to move fast to get ahead of the
really bad weather before it hit us. I knew Tim would want to move as
fast as his blower could turn, but he didn't want to chance Darlene
falling behind.
Dark Shadow came racing across the tarmac at the Airport we were using
as a staging area.
"Wolf, Wolf," someone yelled. "Get me a rifle."
Whirling around Tim saw who it was. "Any harm comes to that Wolf and
I'll leave your ass Staked to an Ice Flow," He promised as he watched
Darlene and Sleeping dog get him back up in the truck.
"I'm sorry Tim, he needed to get out and go," apologized Dog.
"No harm it's best they all find out now," Suddenly there were several
veterans there to say Hi to Shadow. And to thank Darlene for bringing
him along.
"Daddy? Why are they so happy to see him here?"
"Molly always brought us good luck when she came along on a bad run
like this is promising to be," I told her. "He's a Good luck symbol."
We were making good time, and it was hard to believe we were actually
pushing it at fifty miles an hour. Jumper was leaving about a foot and
a half of snow in her wake. Which Darlene and I cleared as we widened
the driving lane throwing off in opposite directions.
We made Living Good without any incidents and were climbing up to begin
the run down into the Yukon River valley, when we heard them on the
radio.
"What the hell was that? Rose shut her down, shut her down you're
throwing red snow," Nikki called out.
"I tried to stop, they just ran right in front of the blade," Rose
said.
"Oh god please tell me it wasn't people,"
"No it was a heard of deer. They acted like they couldn't see the
blower," Rose said.
"Where are you two at?" Tim asked urgently.
"Oh Shit, Rose back it up now," Nikki was screaming.
"What's wrong Nikki?" Rose asked, a hint of fear in her voice as the
sounds of her shifting gears came over the radio.
"Rose you listen to Nikki, Damnit. Get the hell out of there and don't
use your horn whatever you do. If you blow the trailer floor it the
hell out of there don't stop, don't look back, just go!"
"Oh shit," we heard along with a growing rumble. Then the sound of
screeching tortured metal.
"Someone talk to me," Tim was saying. Our convoy slowed to a crawl.
"Nikki, Rose?" "Anyone?"
"Dad they're ok, they're ok Dad," Red was saying about a minute later.
"You're sure Son?"
"Yeah dad, I never seen a blower explode out of a bank of snow before
but it was awesome," Red was saying.
"What happened?"
"Their antennas are gone. But the trucks are still running. Holy shit
Dad they got hit by an Avalanche," Red's voice was over excited from
the adrenaline rush. "What the, Rose what are you doing?" he still had
the microphone keyed.
"Dad, Rose is out of the truck digging in the snow about fifty feet
back," he said. Then we heard nothing.
Grabbing my phone I called Rose, no answer. Then Nikki, it rang four
times before she answered sounding winded.
"Missy, oh god that was close," her breathing was hoarse and winded.
"Rose, Rose says she saw someone or something just before it hit us.
We're, we're trying to find out which."
"Jill can you reach Frank?" I heard Tim asking over the radio.
"He just got there, he has a few others with him. Tim they're really
Ok? I mean you're still talking to them right?" she asked.
Keying my Mike I answered her. "Yes Jill I'm on the phone with Nikki."
"Missy, we found something," Nikki said then the phone went dead.
It seemed like forever and our convoy had stopped at the top of the
pass. "Tim, Missy," Joseph began about ten minutes later.
"Yes Joseph," both Tim and I jumped into the conversation at the same
time.
"Rose saw old Half Tail," he mentioned the Pack Alpha who had taken
Ringo's place. "He's busted up pretty bad, but Him and the girl will
make it, they're getting them in a rescue vehicle headed to the Clinic
now."
"Girl?" Tim, Darlene and I all asked at once.
"Hey I'll tell you as soon as I know something more, I promise."
"Anyone else make it out of the car?" Tim asked.
"Tim, There wasn't any car. Maybe further up under all the snow. They
probably hadn't gotten to it yet before the Avalanche triggered,"
reported Frank. "Look I got heavy Excavating equipment coming in to
clear this out they'll look for the car. And I damn sure want to know
about how she got all those injuries," Frank realized he'd not meant to
say the rest when Tim said, "Me Too."
It had stopped snowing as we sat there at the top of the pass, the wind
had slacked off to a light breeze, and we had about three hours before
it got dark, even though it never really got lighter than a predawn
twilight this time of year.
"Ok people let's get ready to roll," Tim said as he sat behind Darlene.
"Missy, time to change up. Pull off to the left and let Plow Two have
the lead till we get across the Yukon Bridge."
"Daddy are you sure?" she asked over our closed circuit.
"Baby I wouldn't have said it if I wasn't. Just push it as fast as you
can, ok?"
I pulled off to the side letting her and Tim pass then pulled out
behind them, now running the right side cleanup.
"Hey I think they just let that kid take lead," we heard over the
radio.
"You're doing great Baby, Show em what Wyoming Girls are made of," I
told her.
From over a thousand miles away I heard four voices call out,
"WETSU!!!!" 'We Eat This Shit Up'. "Make us Proud Baby Girl," Jill
finished.
Halfway down out of the pass the storm hit sooner than predicted, and
the trucks were beginning to take a beating.
"Keep going Darlene, we don't have any place for one of us to get
around you, you're the lead, just follow the road markers," Tim advised
her. "You're doing fine so far."
I clicked my mike twice to signal Tim I wanted to talk privately, and
we switched to our secondary open channel while still listening in on
the primary.
"Tim, why did you tell her that? You know she's scared to death she'll
make a mistake," I said.
"Love this really isn't that bad and you know it. She's building
confidence as we speak," he told me and I had to admit he was right.
He'd done the same thing to both Jill and Red. Not to mention myself.
"Look this isn't as bad as what they were predicting. So we'll let her
lead until we get across the bridge," He said.
"Ok but you realize there really isn't anywhere else to pass until
we're on the other side right?" I reminded him, the last place we could
pass was coming up fast.
We plowed on through, Long Dog and Elk sliding over to partially clear
the last stretch of breakdown lane as we passed it by at Fifty three
miles an hour. Darlene really was gaining confidence, she had her
blower turning at half speed kicking the snow about twenty feet off the
left side of the road.
Then as the road began to level out the wind increased, and we began to
get Snow and sleet mixed.
"Oh shit," I breathed into the closed link with Tim. I knew he was
seeing what I was seeing. The dark snow laden clouds were moving in
from the west making the already darkened winter day look like full
night as it came.
"Darlene, Honey wake up Sleeping Dog and have him Strap in. and I want
you to get Shadow under the bunk," he called to her.
"D, Daddy, this doesn't look good."
"Just keep it straight Baby, we're right behind you," He told her. We
were both watching a sixty foot Snow Devil racing right toward our
convoy. Over the radio Tim said, "Ok, we got us a Snow Devil coming in,
when it gets here I want everyone to power through it. If you stop
it'll take you off the road with it. All Blowers spool it up to Max."
Watching both Tim and Darlene as they fought just as hard as I did to
push through the base I knew she was earning her Snow Flake. When it
passed she let out a loud whoop of victory. Then the reports came in to
us. We'd lost two rigs off into the ditch. But the trailing recovery
Rigs were taking care of getting them out. But those recovery trucks
were the last we'd see once we crossed the Yukon River.
The wind was gusting hard blowing us around as we followed her the next
sixty miles, she was gradually slowing down to gain better control, and
we were proud of her because we hadn't had to tell her. I could barely
see the flashing strobes on top of the bridge warning poles.
"Ok Blower Two, you're taking us across the bridge. Drop to thirty
miles an hour, and when you pass the Totem Poles with the strobes I
want your blade at a Zero degree angle. And I want that blower running
full out to the right."
"Ok Daddy but I can't see the guard rails, should I just run down the
center?" She asked.
"You'll be going down the center anyways, it's a one lane bridge,"
Little Elk informed her. "And there aren't any guard rails."
I wanted to strangle Elk right then and there, it was bad enough we
barely had enough visibility to see the truck fifty feet ahead. But
then Tim started talking to her before she had a chance to panic.
"Do you see the strobes on top of the Totem Poles on the other side?"
"No, not very clearly Daddy."
"Listen to me Baby Girl, I want you to cut your blade lights, and line
the left center guide post on the blade between those two strobes."
"Oh, ok I see them now."
"Don't look at anything else. Just keep that post between the lights
and you'll be fine," I could hear the worry in his voice though, and
looked at the storm overhead. I could barely see the strobes, and that
bridge was barely wider than our trucks. I prayed the plows guides were
in the right place.
"Don't stop asshole," someone yelled over the radio. "Keep going, we
can't stop, this is the point of no return Man."
"Get it out of line and off to the side before you get to the bridge
you're blocking the rest of us," We had drivers chickening out that was
clear. For the rest of us it was easy all we had to do was stay right
behind the truck in front.
I heard a huge sigh of relief as she passed the Totems on the other
side. "Ok Snow Driver step it out. Angle that blade at twenty degrees
and start picking up speed," Tim told her. "Take us all the way into
the Kanuti Station, and we'll bunker down for Twelve hours and refuel,"
Tim called out. "Who all Chickened out back there?" he asked over the
radio.
"Daddy, were those really trucks in the river back there?" Darlene
asked.
"Yes they were Sweetie," I smiled knowing she'd not wavered even once
though she saw the wrecks where they'd slid off the bridge in the past
and never been recovered. I knew which one was the original Ice Pack,
and prayed Tim didn't tell her until we were on our way back.
"That red one off at the end. That was Momma Jill's first truck wasn't
it, Daddy?" she asked.
"Yes it was Honey. Rose and I stopped and picked her up at the Totem
pole," I decided to tell her.
Jill had ridden the truck in on the far side. And was lucky to be able
to climb out and over the upside down trailer to the bank before she
froze to death. She'd been huddled in the back trying to stay warm
until she heard our blowers coming across the bridge. Then run to the
Totem pole and jumped up on the steps as we slowed down, we hadn't
really stopped. Rose had opened the door and pulled her inside. That
had been six years ago when almost the whole convoy had ended up
needing rescuing. Tim and I had made the run at breakneck speed during
a lull in the storms and brought plenty of help with us.
When we got to Kanuti, Jill called us and we sat talking to her.
"Darlene, I heard you taking the lead across the Yukon. And in the
middle of the worst storm in five years too," she said. "I'm real proud
of you. When you get to the end you be sure they give you an extra snow
flake to go on Mackenzie's door."
"We'll make sure she gets one," Tim said. Then we heard the convoy
coordinator say he would be there to personally hand it to her.
"Ok Jill, tell us about the Avalanche," Tim said.
"Best guess is the blowers triggered it way up, and the deer were
running ahead of it. if Nikki hadn't seen the ones that ran into Rose's
blower they'd have been in it too deep to get out," Jill explained.
"I'm just glad they weren't pulling trailers."
"Me too," I said.
"So tell us about the girl," Tim interrupted.
"No information, she's still unconscious, no ID. Joseph and Frank think
Half Tail was trying to protect her, he was laying on top of her in the
ditch," After a few seconds she added, "They didn't find any car.
Frank's checking missing person's reports."
"Let us know when you hear something, ok?" Tim said.
"Sure will. Now can I talk to our Daughter who is no longer a Baby
Girl?" Jill asked.
They talked for about fifteen minutes before Darlene needed to take her
turn refueling. Then Tim nudged my elbow pointing toward the front of
the convoy where Jumper and Beauty were sitting at the head of the
line.
I had to smile knowing who they were, Kanuti Maiden's coming to thank
the convoy, and keep the drivers warm for the night. At least one if
not more would stay with a driver as we moved out in the morning.
The drivers were beginning to gather around hoping to pick the one they
wanted. As we watched one very young looking one ignored everyone else,
and made a beeline straight for Long Dog's truck. I finally noticed it
wasn't food she was carrying, it was a baby. The girl herself was
barely older than Darlene.
"Looks like Caribou is going home with Long Dog," Tim commented.
"I wonder if Coyote knows about her," I thought out loud.
"Don't worry Missy. Like us they talk about everything. I'll bet she's
as welcome as Jill was," Tim said.
About fifteen minutes later he called us on Tim's phone. "I want you
two to come and meet Little River," he said.
Tim and I finished topping off, and started towards his truck holding
hands. The station was pretty busy though there was a storm still
raging around us. The local bar bustled with business, and we knew most
were in town for the supplies that our passing through meant would be
available.
I saw a young Kanuti standing off to the side, but at first didn't pay
much attention. I mean this was the reservation station after all.
As we reached the truck the passenger door popped open and Long Dog
invited us in. Tim helping me up the icy steps made a comment about the
young boy looking lost.
Caribou leaned forward and peered out the windshield. "That's Too
Small, his mother died at birth and he never really fit in. he's
probably waiting to get his father out of the bar, and see how much of
his paycheck is left for supplies."
Caribou was quite pretty, and her young son looked to be about right
for one of last year's runs. She was happy as she sat on the bed in the
sleeper nursing him.
"Coyote is excited," Dog said. "Caribou is coming home with me, and
we're finally going to have a child in the house," the couple had been
trying for five years and now with Caribou they could have their own
family together.
We visited for a bit talking as Coyote called and they began to talk
more intimately. So Tim and I headed back to his truck, noting that the
young boy was now walking down the line of trucks.
"Excuse me Love," he said, then hurried over to the boy. They talked a
bit then Tim led him back towards me.
"TooSmall here needs a warm place to sleep," he said. I could read it
in his voice, Tim didn't want the youth out there soliciting himself
for a warm bed. Even though there were drivers along who wouldn't mind
having a young boy to play with for the night, the possibility he would
get hurt were too great.
When we got to Jumper, Tim had to help him up into the cab because he
had trouble holding the hand rails. While he started to get comfortable
I decided to fix him some Cocoa, and Tim convinced him it would be
better to shed his heavy coat. I barely stopped myself from gasping in
shock though as the bruises came into view.
The look I sent Tim asked, "What kind of father could do that?" Tim's
look said, "No real Father who cared."
The boy was half frozen, and flashbacks of Jill when we picked her up
from the side of the road six years before played in my mind. The
inside of Jumper was warm enough to sit naked comfortably if we chose,
but the boy still shivered and I began to wonder how long he'd been out
in the cold waiting.
He ate ravenously, and looked nervous. I could tell it was the first
time he'd ever tried to solicit amongst truck drivers, let alone Ice
drivers. But before we could really talk to him Tim wrapped him in
another blanket and I eased him down on the bunk using my body to try
and speed up the warming process.
Someone tapped on the driver's door and Tim answered it letting the man
inside.
"Hi my name is Cold Wind, I see your woman has taken to the boy," he
stated.
"Yes, and you are not his father," Tim stated the obvious.
"No, I came to ask you to please take him with you. His father will not
be returning for some time and it will be better if he has a new life
away from him," the elder of the village stated.
"What of his Mother?" I asked.
"She died giving birth to him. He's been raised by the village mostly.
Except for the times his father comes looking for him," he paused just
long enough. "I have heard many great things about Wyoming. I know that
Caribou and her two sisters are leaving in the morning and hope that
you will take TooSmall with you. He needs your understanding, and
guidance. He is very confused about who he is."
"Confused?" I asked.
"He is unsure if he wishes to live as a man, or follow in the same
direction as the first wife of the Ice Driver, Tim Wyoming."
My eyes went to the sleeping boy and now I realized that I had in deed
seen traces of Mascara, and old nail polish.
"How old is he?" asked Tim.
"He is thirteen, and free to decide for himself what path he will
follow, or where he will go."
"Then if he chooses to go with us we will take him along," I said.
After he left, Caribou called us on Tim's cell phone. "What did the
village elder want? He didn't tell you to leave us did he?"
"No Honey," I answered. "He asked us to take TooSmall with us. And he
is happy that you and your sisters have found your own paths to
follow."
"It's really ok if Snow Fox and Ice Sickle, come too?" she asked. We
could hear Long Dog in the background saying, "See I told you it was
ok."
"So which of the other drivers are they with? I'd like to be sure
they're safe," Tim said.
"Snow Fox is with the one you call Little Elk, and Ice Sickle is with
the one called Grey Horse," She answered.
"Grey Horse?" I looked at Tim.
"From the Ute side of the Reservation," He told me, and finally I
remembered him. We'd both gone to school together during my last year.
Darlene called about then. "Momma, who's your new passenger?" she
asked.
"Why don't you come and meet him? I'm sure he'll feel more comfortable
knowing he is accepted."
She made her way to our truck and I knew that Sleeping Dog must be
asleep already. She brought Dark shadow with her. Her first assessment
was to say, "She's a bit rough around the edges, but I think she's
about the same size as Rose."
Shadow had jumped onto the bed and was sniffing him all over, and it
woke him up with a start.
"TooSmall, this is our Daughter, Chasing shadows. But most usually we
call her Darlene," I said.
"Welcome to the family," Darlene wrapped her arms around him. Then she
carefully pulled back her hand still resting on his upper back as she
looked into his eyes. "You have pretty eyes you know."
He blushed. "Thank you, I think," He looked nervously toward Tim.
"She's right you do have pretty eyes," he said.
Suddenly he looked out the front window of Jumper and jerked up right
then pulled back away from view. Looking out I saw
