I rolled my eyes at Ms. Willow's statement about boys and tried to ignore
it as she continued on with the rest of the class. Not every boy was dumb
as rocks when it came to politics, take Cobi and me for example. We
actually paid attention to the presidential campaigns and cared about who
we wanted for the next president. But of course, most girls just nodded
and listened politely to whatever we had to say while they stared at our
dicks.
For the rest of the class, Cobi and I put our heads down, and by the time
that the bell rang to signify the end of the period, we were glad to get
out of there. Ms. Willow was a good teacher and all, but some of her
views, particularly when it came to boys, were a little outdated. Leaving
the classroom, I said goodbye to Cobi, as we had different classes for
the next couple of periods and we agreed to meet up at lunch.
I wasn't particularly looking forward to my next class: math. I was the
only boy in the class and I often got teased about it--surprisingly, by
both genders. You would think that boys would be more supportive and be
glad that I was providing an opening for boys, but they just saw me as
some kind of janegirl.
"Ah, Mss Forrest," the teacher, Ms. Jusstin Valdez, greeted me as I
entered the classroom before beginning her usual rant about boys in math
classes. Normally, I just took whatever she had to say but after Mss
Willow's comments in history, I felt like responding. "Ms. Valdez, I know
that you and most of the girls in this class feel that I shouldn't be
here because girls spend more time in school than boys when they're
younger, and you're right, it makes sense. But I've worked hard at my
studies, and I think that my grades prove that I belong here and not
stuck in home economics."
Ms. Valdez and a few of the girls sat there and stared at me with open
mouths as they tried to understand my response. I just grinned to myself
and headed to my seat, proud of myself for standing up to my teacher,
even though I knew that it would probably get me into trouble.
Ms. Valdez took a moment to compose herself before she responded. She
straightened her tie and cleared her throat. "Well, Mss. Forrest, if
that's how you really feel then maybe you would like to discuss it with
me after school...in detention?" My jaw dropped. I had seen many girls
retort to some of Ms. Valdez's comments and they never got punished; in
fact, she often welcomed their comments with a challenging debate. I
suppose that this was just another factor in being a boy.
"But--Miss," I replied as I realised that detention would mean me missing
out on going shopping with Cobi and the girls. "I was planning on going
to the mall this afternoon with my friends."
"Then maybe you should have thought about that before you made that
cheeky remark, hmm, laddie?" she sneered at me. I hung my head as I
nodded slowly.
"Yes, Miss." Ms. Valdez looked at me coldly. She may be short for a
woman, but she could command a domineering presence in other ways.
"Maybe if you keep quiet in class and do well... I will consider dropping
the detention." I nodded again. "With that sorted, let's get on with the
lesson," she continued, addressing the rest of the class. Some of the
girls were still sniggering at my little outburst and the result that it
gained from the teacher. For the rest of the class, I kept quiet and
tried to do well--tried was the key word, as Ms Valdez kept throwing me
really hard questions, almost as if she was trying to get me to fail as I
noticed that none of the girls in the class seemed to get any hard
questions.
When the bell rang, I got out of the classroom as quickly as I could.
Fortunately, Ms. Valdez had kept her end of the bargain and let me off
detention as I had done extremely well in her class. Truthfully, I was
starting to wonder if I could make it through the rest of the year in
math. It was a lot harder than I originally thought and certainly a lot
to take in for someone like me. Thankfully, my next class was a lot more
calming and more suited for a boy.
Unlike math class, Advanced Makeup class was all boys. There wasn't a
single girl in the class and who could blame them? Even the teacher, Mss.
Nahelle Wright was a boy. While the school had its fair share of black
teachers, Mss. Wright was the only man among them. As well as being an
expert in makeup (the reason why he taught this class), he also had a
good taste in fashion--as was expected from a young (not to mention,
single) man--and today was no different. Today's outfit consisted of a
yellow short-sleeved blouse, unbuttoned just enough to show a hint of a
bra, a black skirt falling just above his knees and matching black 3-inch
heels. His long curly black hair was in its usual afro style and gold
hoop-shaped earrings hung from his ears. His makeup, as usual, was
impeccable with ruby red lips and purple eyeshadow, and his long French
manicured nails were painted in the same color as his lips. He smiled at
me warmly as I entered.
"Good morning, Mss Forrest." I smiled back, happy to be greeted in a
friendly manner for once.
"Good morning, Mss. Wright."
"I hope that you had a good spring break?" he asked while we waited for
the rest of the class to file in.
"I sure did, Mss. Wright. How was yours?" Before he said anything, he
beamed with happiness as he daintily showed me his right hand.
"I got engaged!" he squealed excitedly.
Even though he was older than me and my teacher, I squealed along with
him. It's every boy's dream to find a handsome woman to marry. "Oh,
congratulations!" I replied as we giggled like little boys. When we
finally calmed down, I realised what that actually meant.
"So this will be your last year of teaching?" I asked sadly. Mss Wright
was one of my favorite teachers.
He nodded sadly. "I'm afraid so, hun...we've set a date for a summer
wedding."
"Ooh," I cooed as I imagined my own dream wedding. I was brought out of
my thoughts as the last few members of the class arrived and I went to
take my seat. I sat next to one of my friends in this class, Dezzie
Calderona. He had been waiting for me while I talked with Mss Wright.
"So Mss. Wright is engaged, huh?" he asked, leaning towards me and
tucking his brunette hair behind his ear as he did so. I nodded, Dezzie
must have seen Mss. Wright showing me his ring. Dezzie's face fell.
"That's a shame. I really like Mss Wright."
We broke off as Mss Wright began the class, she started with his exciting
news, showing the ring off to the entire class to a series of coos and
squeals. It took a while for everyone to calm down, and once every boy
had seen and admired at great length (each dreaming about the rock that
their respective girlfriends would present them with when they finally
popped the question), Mss. Wright was able to get the lesson started. He
got up and walked over to the supply closet and dug out a dummy and a
makeup kit. Setting them up by his desk, he smoothed out his skirt and
smiled at the class.
"Now laddies, I have to admit that today's lesson has a bit of a personal
agenda to it. Obviously, it takes a boy a lot of planning for his dream
date." All the boys in the class nodded as Mss Wright continued. "Now,
you boys are becoming quite adept at your skills with makeup. Some even
better than me!" He chuckled. "I figured that I could use you boys to aid
me in some of the process. Specifically, what makeup shall I wear on the
big day?" Some of the more glittery boys oohed at that and started
gossiping excitedly. "So today's lesson will be on preparing makeup on
darker skin tones. Now, everyone grab a partner and a makeup kit. If your
partner doesn't have dark skin, I have some dummies in the supply
closet."
Dezzie and I looked at each other excitedly before we joined the throng
of boys at the supply closet waiting to get what we needed for the
lesson. Since neither of us had dark skin, we grabbed the last dummy, a
makeup kit and a copy of the latest makeup magazine before we returned to
our seats.
Dezzie set up the dummy and the makeup kit while I began flicking through
the magazine for ideas. "Ooh," I said after a while. "How about this
one?" I asked as I pointed to one of the pictures.
Dezzie, having finished setting up, came and sat down next to me,
smoothing his skirt out as he did so. He looked at the picture that I was
pointing at and nodded. "Not bad Lexie," he said, smiling. "You get to
work on the foundation while I work on the blemish."
My next class was also boy-centric. Home Economics. It was a class that
was particularly designed to help boys when they finally became
househusbands and were in charge of the house. It focused on topics like
recipes, how to change a diaper, using the formula to feed a baby.
Everything that a respectable married man should know.
Our teacher, Msr. Quenne Brady, was your stereotypical househusband. Like
my father, he tended to dress like a househusband from the fifties, and
he was the only male teacher who was married. As such, he only worked
part-time and had his lessons scheduled during mid-day when his own
children were at school.
When everybody had settled into their seats, Msr. Brady began the lesson.
"Alright, class," he began softly. Msr. Brady spoke as if he belonged in
a mansion, he was very posh and his mannerisms reflected similarly.
"Today's lesson will be a split childcare lesson. We are going to be
learning how to bottle feed correctly and how to change a diaper. Now,
everyone, select a doll and we shall begin." Everyone got up and picked
out a doll from several shelves along the wall. After picking mine, I
went back to my desk which I shared with a couple of boys who I worked
with when we had cooking days. Carla and Aidenne.
"Hey, Lexanne," Aidenne greeted me as I sat down. I smiled at him and
returned the greeting.
"So how was your spring break?"
"It was fine, I guess." I replied. "Did you hear the news about Mss.
Wright?"
Both boys looked at me and shook their heads.
"Oh, I guess that he'll want to tell you in class, but he got engaged
over spring break."
"What!?" Carla and Aidenne cried out causing Msr. Brady to look over and
hush them.
"Oh no," Carla said glumly. "I really like Mss Wright." It seemed that
everybody did.
"I guess that means that someone will be replacing him next year then,"
Aidenne added as I nodded.
"Can't he stay on as teacher? I mean, look at Msr. Brady. He's the only
male teacher that's married."
I shook my head.
"I don't think so... Women can be so controlling when it comes to men and
their careers after marriage. I think that Msr. Brady's wife only lets
him because he's teaching home economics and he can use the experience
gained at home to teach in the class. He is older than most of the men
here."
Carla and Aidenne nodded reluctantly in agreement.
At this point, Msr. Brady started his rounds of inspecting our progress
so we quietened down as he approached us. Msr. Brady nodded in approval
as he watched how I handled the baby during the feeding process, although
he had a few comments on Carla's performance.
"Carla, as a brother of two younger children, I expected better of you.
Does your father not share the responsibilities of bottle-feeding with
you at home?" He asked rather disapprovingly.
Carla looked a little taken aback.
"Of course he does. I've bottle-fed my sister many times and I've had no
complaints from him."
Msr. Brady frowned. "Are you questioning my teaching abilities young
laddie?" A hush fell across the classroom as Carla shook his head.
"Of course not, Msr. Brady."
He glared at Carla. "Well then, maybe your father needs to attend one of
my lessons." He let out a huff before moving on to the next pupil.
Once Msr Brady had moved out of earshot, Carla breathed a sigh of relief.
"That was close," Aidenne commented. "You really should be more careful,
Carla."
"I can't help it that Msr Brady's teaching techniques are a little old
fashioned. As he said, I have two younger siblings. It's not like I
haven't helped dad out or anything."
"True, but still, you should be careful. You want to get a good grade in
this class, don't you? I can't imagine what would happen if a boy failed
home economics."
"I suppose," Carla piped up. "No girl wants to marry a boy that doesn't
know how to run a house."
I nodded in agreement as I returned to my doll, noticing that it had
finished feeding. Now it was time to change its diaper.
