"Bye dad," I said as I got out of the car. "Have a good day, sweetie,"
he said, he waited for me to shut the car door and then drove off
heading home. I looked up at the school building and sighed "here goes
nothing" I thought to myself. My family and I had just moved to
Philadelphia from England so this was my first time at school here. I
headed in towards the reception desk. After signing in I was given a
map, my timetable and a key to the locker. The man on the reception desk
was kind enough to show me on the map where my locker was and also
pointed me in the right direction.
I found my locker easily enough and opened it and then put the books
that I didn't need into my locker. I shut the locker and set the
combination, which I then wrote down so that I wouldn't forget. I slung
my backpack over my shoulder and looked at my timetable. My first class
was math. So, using the map I had been given I made my way towards that
class. I so busy looking back and forth between the map and the
corridors that I didn't watch where I was going and eventually bumped
into someone, knocking me over and sending my papers flying.
"Hey watch where you're going jerk!" said a voice. I looked up and
gulped, standing over me were three girls who wearing the school's
varsity jacket. The one that looked like the leader looked down at me.
She had short light brown hair. "You're new here aren't you?" she asked
sternly. I nodded. "Well in that case, I'll let you off this time. But
watch where you are going next time, Got it?" she said. I nodded,
stammering an apology as they left. I started to collect my papers.
"Need a hand?" someone asked. I looked up and this time there was a boy
standing over me. He was tall and rather muscular for a boy. He didn't
appear to be as strong as a girl but he was definitely stronger than
your average boy. His jet black hair was styled into a pixie cut, making
him look almost like a girl. He wore little makeup except for some lip
gloss and some black eyeliner. The boy was wearing a black tank top that
showed off his arms and he was wearing denim short shorts and white
sneakers.
"Yes please," I said after I stopped staring at him. He smiled and
started collecting the papers. "So what happened?" he asked. "I bumped
into a group of girls. I wasn't looking where I was going." We had
finished collecting the papers, he handed me the ones that he had picked
up. "Thanks," I replied "No problem," he said, "you're new here aren't
you? I can tell by your accent." I nodded in reply. "Where are you
from?" he asked. "England," I replied. "Oh that's cool. I've always
wanted to go there," he said. "I'm George by the way." George held out
his hand. "Laura," I replied shaking his hand.
"Nice to meet you Laura," he said, "what class do you have first?"
"Math," I replied. "Ah, same as me," George acknowledged. "Come on. I'll
take you there." And with that he grabbed my hand and started leading me
towards math.
The rest of the morning passed by normally after math, I had English.
George however had geography. Before we left math, George suggested
meeting him at lunch and he'd introduce me to the rest of his friends. I
agreed and then headed towards English. When lunchtime came, I made my
way to the cafeteria. After grabbing a tray of food I looked around for
George and I saw him waving to me. He was sitting with two girls, I
walked over to them.
"Hi George," I said as I approached them. "Hi Laura. Guys, this is
Laura," he said to the girls. The two girls introduced themselves as
Linda and Hannah. Both Hannah and Linda were dressed similarly in jeans
and t-shirts. Linda had a red top on which had the logo of the Flash on
it while Hannah had some catch phrase from a TV show on hers. "So
Laura," Linda started, "George tells me you're from England." I nodded.
We sat talking for a while as I told them a bit about myself. How we had
lived in London, how my mom had always wanted to live in America and
then she got a job offer from work and she jumped at the chance. I also
talked about what movies I liked and the such.
"So do you have a PS4?" Hannah asked. I nodded. "Yeah, mom got it for me
to help with the move and everything." "Sweet!" Hannah replied. "Both
Linda and I have one as well." "That's cool," I said. "Hey fancy coming
around my house this afternoon?" "Yeah that would be great. How many
controllers do you have?" Hannah asked. I replied by stating that I had
just the one. "Ok, Linda and I will stop by our houses and bring over
ours. That way the four of us can play."
"The four of us?" I asked looking at George. He winked at me and said,
"Bring it on big girl." I looked at Hannah and Linda surprised. "Oh come
on Laura!" Linda said laughing. "You didn't think that George was one of
those boyish boys did you?" she asked. "No, George is just as much of a
girl as you or me." "Except that his private parts stick out unlike
ours," Hannah added gesturing to her crotch with a smirk on her face.
"Hey!" George said playfully slapping Hannah on the arm. "What she means
is; I'm a Janegirl. I prefer to hang out with girls rather than boys,"
he said. "Oh ok," I replied. With that the bell rang indicating that
lunch period was over. "I'll see you guys outside after school," I said,
they all nodded and we headed off to our separate classes.
After school I stood outside waiting for my new friends. It wasn't long
before we had all met up. We headed to Hannah's house first as she was
closest to the school. She dashed inside shouting a quick hello to her
dad while she grabbed a pair of controllers. We then headed to Linda's
house as she did the same. Finally we came to my house. "Hi dad, I'm
home," I said entering the house. "I'm in the kitchen," came the
response. We entered the kitchen. "Hey dad. I've brought my new friends
over, I hope that's ok?" Dad turned away from the counter that he was
cleaning. "That's fine sweetie. Would you all like something to drink?"
he asked. We all nodded and after I introduced my friends to dad, he
handed each of us a glass of coke and we headed upstairs.
"So what games do you have?" Hannah asked looking around my room. "Well
I only have the one at the moment. It's called Fifa," I said. "What's
that?" George asked. "Well it's a football game. Which is soccer to you
guys," I added as I saw puzzled looks on their faces. "Oh cool," Hannah
said "How about we do two on two?" she suggested. "That sounds good," I
said. We partnered up and started the game. I got George while Hannah
and Linda went against us.
I explained the rules briefly and before long we got into a game. I soon
found out that George was really competitive for a boy. He soon got into
the game and was scoring lots of goals. Hannah and Linda just groaned
every time they let a goal in. We had had so much fun that we hadn't
realised what the time was as my father poked his head round my bedroom
door. "Sweetie. I know you're having fun with you friends but dinner's
nearly ready." "Ok dad. We'll just finish this match and then they'll be
off." Dad nodded and then left the room.
The final game ended 3-2 and we all laughed as Hannah had managed to
score an own goal. "Well that was fun," Hannah said as I switched off
the console. "Yeah it was great. Thanks for coming over," I said as we
headed downstairs. "Same again tomorrow? I'll take you three on all by
myself," George said and we all laughed. "Yeah sure, why not?" Linda
replied. "See you guys tomorrow," I said as I opened the door for them.
They all said their goodbyes and then headed off to their respective
houses. I closed the door thinking that it was great that I had found
new friends so quickly. I turned around and headed to the downstairs
toilet to wash up before dinner.
