Yara's glyphs allowed her to participate.
The house acquired a license to produce a top-end AVS suite by Wanpi.
Yara took an instant liking to the suit, which was a spinal derm with a
sugar suit for her head.
The next few days passed uneventfully. Yara practiced capoeira, with and
without the group. Because Yara's governors kept her from rising
immediately if thrown to the ground, the capoeira mestre taught Yara a
maneuver he called an au, basically a cartwheel. This turned a throw or
an off-balance moment into motion which could be used to right herself,
move away, or even to attack.
Yara also continued to learn maculele, in pairs, and with the group. She
gathered so much firewood, the house eventually asked her to stop. She
continued her studies. She also continued combat role-play on PASsport.
Yara used Jas's skills with Q+/- to establish a pocket kingdom in
PASsport. Working with Master Hoose, she established the mechanics of fey
magic in the game. Then she loaded what she had learned of fey magic into
Reflet.
A delivery blimp dropped off a pallet of equipment for the researchers.
Team Five now had a new test subject.
Yara.
Yara's governors limited her in ways that were increasingly predictable.
Besides making her sluggish and weak if thrown to the ground, they also
robbed her of strength if someone pinned her against a tree or against
the ground.
Judo could only do so much. Yara found herself pinned again and again -
and nearly defenseless. She couldn't even scream, because her governors
muted her voice along with her muscles. The only spells they allowed then
were the ones that made her horny.
Several times, while pinned, she considered spending a charge on her
coin. Would that work?
It might only work once.
Master Hoose's intuition proved correct, if a haus monster can be said to
intuit. The absences that Yara induced with her coin were linked to the
length of her orgasms.
Thus began Yara's new quest to extend the length and quality of her
orgasms.
She told herself it was for science.
She also grinned madly whenever telling herself this.
Mechanical assistance - toys - profoundly changed Yara's worldview. She'd

worry. When spending a charge, Yara now had to be careful to readopt body
poses before the glyphs came back. She didn't know what they perceived or
how, but didn't want them to figure out that they had been unaware for a
time.
Then, one night, Yara discovered the settings page for her avatar,
Reflet. The orgasms the game induced after that routinely lasted longer
than a minute.
This left Yara breathless and shaking. She learned to cast a silence
spell on herself, and to slow her thrashing with either a calm spell or
paralysis. She saw reports of hour-long orgasms on the forum pages of
PASsport. She didn't know whether to view those reports skeptically, or
with fear.
Paralysis and silence did nothing to abate her body's response to orgasm.
The odors that wafted up from Yara's bunk interrupted Professor Helfast's
sleep so often that the professor started working into the night. If she
ran out of work, the professor spent time on social sites or checking the
news. Or she played Solitaire at the table, her back turned on Yara's
bunk. Ears twitching, body posture rigid.
Then Yara discovered that she could combine the charges on the coin, or
split them. Her quest for long-lasting orgasms ceased.
The glyph spells were significantly less complex than the collar spell.
On Monday, they learned how to copy the spells exactly. They still didn't
know what the glyphs did, nor how, but they now could place the curse on
other people.
Not surprisingly, no one volunteered to be a test subject.
Abelino explained it, "It's portal magic. Each of these glyphs opens a
rip, or it once did. This part of the code is transformation magic. And
this almost looks like a possession spell."
"Who or what is possessing me?"
They didn't know.
The secretary program the Yara had imported to her specs proved its worth
again. It pointed out similarities between the glyph code and several
human computer languages. Then it black-boxed a compiler program to
rewrite the code and print it onto Yara's game avatar.
Team Five examined the compiler program. Shrugs all around. The
consensus?
It might work.
Yara saved a copy of Reflet and archived it. Then she cursed her game
avatar with a pair of glyphs.
The virtual glyphs looked exactly the same, which was confirmation, of a
sort, because there didn't seem to be any code that told the game how to
map it, how to represent the appearance of the glyphs.
Covering the glyphs caused Reflet, and Yara by extension, to get horny.
When Reflet's libido rose to a certain level, Yara lost control of
Reflet's actions until the avatar found a "cure" for her horniness.
Yara rode along helplessly as Reflet left her apartment, found a monster,
and got laid.
Team Five tried all the things they thought might dispel the curse, or at
least weaken it.
Most of these things doubled the curse, or worse. At one point, a rip
opened up. Two demons appeared. They fucked Reflet repeatedly, then
resorbed into the glyphs.
Professor Helfast said, "Try that again."
"What?" Yara asked, wide-eyed.
"Again."
Yara jumped Reflet back to a save point. They tried it again.
The same two monsters appeared. Imps.
"What do we know about imps?" the Professor asked.
"Low-level demons," Tree Nose said. "They fuck anything, including farm
animals and dead things. Highly fertile. They can rape a hornet's nest
and get it pregnant. Associated with incubi, though it's not clear if
they are related. They sometimes kill. A single imp is a nuisance unless
he catches you napping. Eight of them can easily overmatch a seasoned
warrior." She grimaced. "Some imps specialize in binding magic, some in
potions. Others specialize in seduction. There are elemental imps, fire
imps, water imps. Poltersprites might be an air elemental version of
imp."
"Are they easy to kill?"
"No demon is easy to kill."
Yara said, "My governors are demons? News flash. Five days of study,
bah."
Brother said, "All lessons are helpful."
She looked mildly at Brother.
He added, "Although not all help is beneficial."
"Right," Yara said, "Is the collar also be a demon?"
Brother shrugged. "Possible."
Yara sighed. "Can you guys kill a pair of imps? Because I can't. I can't
even land a killing blow while dancing."
Onsei said, "It would be a messy battle. It might also trigger a larger
battle - if they open a rip and invite like-minded demons." He looked
around. "Perhaps we should move off the ley lines."
The professor said, "This is transformation code. File compression." She
tapped her teeth. "They folded those imps up into two dimensions."
Brother said, "Unproven. Remember they govern the lady in this form."
"Call it what it is. Possession." Her eyes narrowed. "It's folded space.
There will be associations in the folded form that are not present in the
real. And arsey-versey." She set her pet AIs on geometry problems and
folding. "Break time. Let the engines stew for a while. Quantum computing
is quick but not instant."
"The imps...."
"Already know what we know. If they listen carefully while folded."
The next day they figured out how to duplicate the collar spell. They
adapted it to game code, and fitted a collar onto Yara's avatar.
Yara chuckled. "Reflet says she would like to thank each of you in person
for the new gifts."
Athan chuckled. "Tell her we regretfully decline."
"She hears what I hear."
"Tell her that the effects are temporary, if uncomfortable. She'll spawn
at a save point without the new curse."
Yara frowned. "She thinks she's married now. The ring around her neck is
a ring of marriage."
Onsei said, "I confirm that."
Yara thought to herself so strongly that she almost subvocalized. "I'm
married?"
She realized that she had zero idea of what that meant in fey society -
and that the people here all expected her to know exactly what it meant,
and what it didn't mean.
Out of depth, out of depth. Yara felt a moment of panic.
She stifled it.
"I'm going for a walk," she said. She disconnected from Reflet, putting
the avatar on autopilot. "Please don't torture my avatar without need."
One of her default personalities was Reflet. "Consider that avatar an
extension of me. Because it is, in many ways. Don't suspend the tests,
just...." Yara used a fey gesture she'd learned recently. It was a kata,
expressing the fey equivalent to existentialism.
Yara sat at the end of the dock with her feet in the water. She'd taken
her boots off to examine her feet.
They were fully healed. Even the scar tissue was minimal.
The water was icy cold, but it helped clear her mind.
The cat appeared by her side. Yara scratched it behind its ears. She
subvocalized to speak with the haus monster.
"I panicked."
*I saw.*
"Married?"
*Apparently.*
"Let me know if anything happens I should go back for. Like a cure?"
*Will comply. Two terms you should learn today. Confariation and
diffarreation. In its simplest form, confariation is conversation. In fey
society, this implies haggling. Important decisions are sometimes decided
with a moot. This is called a confariation, sometimes translated as
confarreation in English. Each moot begins with a marriage ceremony. It
ends with a divorce, a diffareation.*
Yara took a moment before she replied. "A marriage."
*Between contesting parties, or their representatives.*
"Like opposite parties in a civil suit?"
The cat nodded.
"Married."
*Consummated in public. At the moot.*
"To sue somebody, I have to fuck them?"
The cat sneezed.
"I suppose that cuts back on frivolous lawsuits. Why am I still married?
Am I still married? Wouldn't the princess - the real princess...."
*If you were married in a confariation and you still wear the ring, the
marriage was not dissolved. The dispute is still considered under
negotiation.*
"The princess?"
*It depends on the rite. She might still be the responsible party. She
might be able to assign it to a representative.*
"How do I get a divorce, a diffareation?"
*Much depends on the rite used.*
"Assume it was Red Court."
*It might still be Green. Or Hive. It could also be a Gray rite, or one
of many unaligned mootlaw.*
"Which court assigns women as chattel in marriage?"
*All of them, except the Gray. Any slave-owning society disenfranchises
most of its citizens.*
"No wonder Morgana is Gray." Yara fingered the collar, clearly a slave's
collar. She touched each glyph, not caring that this activated them.
Bordello slave. "This is negotiation?"
*If the dispute is not settled, you revert to this state. In fact, you
have that status now. Any fey who finds you is honor-bound to treat you
with the status you display.*
"Why are the fey here treating me like a princess?"
*That is your status here. Earth governments recognize you as royalty.*
"If I run and I'm found, I'm fucked. If I stay and my masters find me;
I'm fucked. I'm just fucked, generally."
*This may be the reason the Queen closed the ways. You can be passed from
customer to customer for a few coins.*
"Is Mars safe?"
*No.*
"A generation ship?"
*Safer than most places.*
"Yeah, but getting on one." Yara paused. "I'd need money, baksheesh,
connections."
*The next one leaves in eleven years.*
Yara laughed bitterly. "There went Plan Z. The Red bastard who did this.
Is he at equal risk?"
*It could be a she,* Master Hoose pointed out. *Or an unsexed.*
"What woman would do this to another woman?"
*It's not unheard of. If your Red Court mate had higher status to begin
with, he risks only enough to bring him down in equal measure.*
"Small consolation."
*He or she could simply pay in gold, losing no social status.*
"Fucking tenesmic." Yara looked out into the fog on the lake. "I need to
negotiate from a position of strength."
*Your champion holds a similar opinion.*
"They expect me to know what is being negotiated, and with whom."
*Not an unreasonable assumption.*
"What if I didn't know? What if the princess actually and truly doesn't
know?"
*That is close to a worst-case scenario.*
"Is it possible?"
The cat hacked up a hairball.
"Okay, furball. I know you're a haus monster. Stop the theatrics."
*I was stalling for time. Reviewing every conversation I overheard. Yes,
it is possible. It's also possible that she doesn't know she was married,
nor that she left you tied to a fey contract.*
"Okay. I can officially stop hating the princess. She might not be an
evil bitch. Might."
*A complication arises. Your avatar is bound by the same marriage
contract. They reverted her to a save point. She is still cursed.
Retroactively.*
"That happens. PASsport curses travel backwards in time. They can even
infect a new character you write up, if you stop playing the character
that holds the curse."
*That means, technically, you are married in a group marriage now. Your
new bride is in yet another plane of reality.*
"The many-worlds theories." Yara bit her lip. "There could be a reality
where PASsport is real and this place is a game."
*Unlikely. They break too many laws of physics in that game.*
"Group marriage. How common are they?" Yara thought back to amount of
semen that leaked out of every orifice. And how much she puked up. "Oh, I
think I can confirm it was a male that I married."
*Some moots get out of hand. The consummation is shared
indiscriminately.*
"An orgy?"
*Yes, it could be a group marriage.*
"With everyone of low status cursed this low or lower." Yara sighed.
*It probably has a simpler explanation.*
Yara nodded. Brothel slave. Before the negotiations, we should celebrate!
*I heard that. I concur. That is the most likely explanation.*
Yara toggled off her subvocalizing.
She needed a miracle.
Or the Lady of the Lake.
King Arthur had no happily-ever-after.
Yara spoke aloud. "King Arthur was a fool."
