Jas heard bamboo chimes and her blood went cold. She checked her overlays
on Viz1.
A rip. Big enough for a vehicle. In the still-smoking crater that marked
where Master Hoose's house once stood.
Jas bathed the area in T-waves. She tapped her specs.
The concordance voice from Bureau 13 answered. "We see it. Video,
please."
Jas linked them to her displays.
Two chevalines, three riders. Morgana came through first, on her sow.
Jasper-Yara and Master Hoose followed on a second sow. Then a Hive
monster erupted from the rip.
It was the size of a small dragon. Armored. Seething with nanites and
smaller creatures.
Jas shut the rip. She registered the signal of a large invasion rip. She
deflected the piggyback rip back to sender - along with a gift.
Gray goo - destructive nanites designed to turn everything into a copy of
itself. It wasn't gray nor was it actually goo. But it was modeled on a
concept of that name from turn-of-the-century science fiction.
Jas set her local assets on task, devour the small Hive creatures then
stand by.
Every one of the woodland creatures Jas sent in would die. Even the ones
who survived the onslaught would die, as orbital command sanitized the
area and local air command sanitized it again with chemical weapons and
nanites.
But they were bred for this. Jas was using Hive methods to fight the Hive
itself.
The problem was, Jas's assets were spread over a wide area. Because the
Hive could appear anywhere inside the cluster of nodes in this forest.
And might also appear in other rips. Simultaneously.
No other rips noted. Not yet.
Jas noted the countdown. Was she at a safe distance?
That depended on Orbital Command. Would they send tank-killers? Bunker-
busters? A city-killer?
Jas fired dragon-killer arrows with explosive warheads. The monster
deflected them, as expected. It also deflected every spear the boat
flung. These spears were the size of small timbers
Then the trees started attacking, and overwhelmed the defenses the wyrm
threw up. Trees threw spears and whipped every hive animal larger than a
cockroach. Birds flew in. A Jersey gator waddled on shore.
Morgana and the others barely had time to turn around and face the large
wyrm before it died.
The people on the chevalines used fire to burn out many of the small
invaders.
Jas plotted the invasion on her display. One swarm spread toward Morgana
and company. Another swarm flowed or flew towards the lake.
Flying and hopping things headed straight north, in a line.
Jas called up a sticky net. It swept through most of the line.
Birds collected the rest.
The two chevalines started to move away from ground zero. Understandable.
Smart, even. But Jas stopped them.
"Hold," she said in a normal voice, but projected her voice from every
tree and blade of grass around the party. "Hold for inspection. I will
shoot you myself, Morgana. Stop moving."
The commands repeated automatically in Calen and then Tsurgi.
Jas triggered the self-destruct on every biologic asset she had inside
the kill zone. Most of the critters died. A few didn't. Assets outside
the kill zone killed those.
"Cici?" Jasper-Yara asked. "I thought you died."
Jas smiled briefly. She had wondered if the princesses shared
information. Apparently not.
Jas scanned them. No large parasites. No clusters of Hive DNA. Master
Hoose and was full of XNA, but it matched the XNA of his constructs. The
chevalines were chevalines.
"All right. Move. Quarantine," Jas said. "Onto the boat. Quickly now.
Sanitizing, in ... twenty seven seconds." Jas motored the boat to the end
of the dock. She checked with Bureau 13. "Hey, I'm not dead, am I?"
She heard four sonic booms. She saw flashes in the clouds above.
The voice from Bureau 13 said, "Kinetic weapons aborted. Lower your
screen. Ultraviolet scrub as soon as you are clear."
The party rode to the end of the dock, stepped onto the boat, then
dismounted.
Jas motored away from the dock.
Master Hoose smiled. "Nice save, lassie." He looked around. "I like what
ye've done with the place."
"Necessity is a mother."
"Cici?" Morgana asked.
"This is her body. Cici's not home."
"Jas?" Morgana asked.
Jas nodded. "Quarantine, children." She heard a thunderclap, then a
buzzing roar and a sizzling sound as an orbital laser burned a hole one
meter into the ground. Trees exploded with a series of pops. She smelled
smoke. Forest fire.
They would blame it on lightning. In the wettest part of the year.
Jas checked her inventory.
She still had enough biologic response for two more small incursions.
Nobody had enough resources to combat a large-scale invasion - except
maybe Strategic Orbital Command.
Perhaps the gray goo had stopped today's invasion.
A few minutes later, a watertanker dropped chemicals on the burn. The
drop included nanites that put out the fire. Other nanites penetrated the
ground and the burnt trees. These killed any Hive organism that had
burrowed in. The nanites also inoculated the area, protecting against
Hive microbes, Hive nanites, and small Hive critters for a time.
In theory. In practice, they would have to watch and wait. The Hive was
persistent, patient, and adaptive.
Jasper rode into town on his chevaline. He stopped by the storage unit
first. "Tarhee," he said, and saluted.
"You here to settle your bill?"
"Paid in full." Jas dropped a credit spike on the counter.
Tarhee processed it with a nod.
"Not that cube." Jas recited his account number.
"You're not the princess?" Tarhee asked.
"Do I look like a princess?"
Tarhee used Green magic to scan Jas. Jas knew what was happening but also
knew what Tarhee would find. Normal human. Not one nanite of Red or Green
mana. Unremarkable in every way.
In every way available to a user of Red or Green mana.
"Thanks for the long look," Jas said, "but you're not my type. I'm
pulling all my stuff from storage. You can rent the cube to someone
else." He saluted again. "Princess," Jas said, scoffing. "Prison was not
kind, was it?"
Jas visited Stevie and Sheena next. Melissa was there, too, along with
her fianc?.
They ordered pizza. For the first time in ages, Jas didn't insist on
Pizza Pizang.
Jas started another character on PASsport. Yara was running Reflet now.
Jas rented an anchorage on Wolf Run, upstream of the cider-mill dock, by
Umimatsu's. Morgana and Yara stayed with him on the boat for a few weeks.
Master Hoose came to visit frequently. Sometimes Master Hoose didn't
bother to travel all the distance from April City. He simply stepped out
of the woodwork.
Whenever Jas was away, setting up hard points around recently discovered
nodes, the kabouterman minded the ship. He spent his time fishing and
smoking a pipe. He was a friendly sort, often hosting barbecues on the
dock. But he never invited anyone on board.
The princess disappeared one morning. Morgana stuck around just long
enough to say goodbye.
"Fighting another war?" Jas asked.
"Establishing a colony," Morgana said.
"The red caps?"
Morgana nodded.
"Say hi to the Toms. Badoesa. Tell Nakki I miss her." Jas rubbed his
chest.
"Come with us."
Jas sighed. "Job to do. Hive incursions are up this month. They're
probing our defenses."
"They'll do that for the next thousand years. Take a vacation. Live a
little, Jas."
Jas scratched his head. "Thing is, I like my job."
Morgana nodded. "How's Melissa?"
"Trying to get pregnant."
"How do you feel about that?"
"I've learned to let go."
"Dog butt, Jas."
Jas pinched the bridge of his nose. "They say the average marriage lasts
three and a half years."
"Want me to hurry things along? I can turn him into a frog."
