Yara woke up crampy and feverish. After her dose of valentine, she begged
aspirin from the professor's first-aid kit.
"Hope I'm not infected," Yara said.
"Did it sting you?"
"No."
"You're not infected." The professor sniffed Yara. "No parasites. But
just to be sure...." She scanned Yara's body with the T-wave scanner on
her chevaline.
"You're clean. You could use a bath." The professor wrinkled her nose.
Yara cleaned up with baby wipes. She washed her hair with hand soap and
water from the professor's cloth bucket.
Cold! She had to be careful, scrubbing her scalp with these claws. Yara
examined her nails. She saw now why Morgana painted her nails. People
assumed they were press-on nails. Didn't question it.
Brushing her hair was a bitch. Tangles in her hair. It hurt to brush it
out.
The professor pulled hot water from a tit on the hind end of her
chevaline. She made hot chocolate and coffee from last night's MREs. They
drank that, and ate trail mix that Yara had brought along.
After breakfast, Yara felt better. Still crampy, though, and bloated.
Something she ate?
She found a quiet spot behind one of the trees. She used her camp knife
to dig a hole and to bury her leavings after she dropped chocolate.
Mosquitos were merciless.
Her uniform had changed. So had Sheena's. It wasn't blue and black
anymore. It was browns and black camouflage. The high-viz rain jacket and
hat had likewise changed.
Smart weave?
The professor's clothes hadn't changed. She flipped her high-viz jacket
inside-out.
Black, reversible. It had pockets on that side, too.
Yara rode on Sheena's chevaline. Her chevaline limped along behind.
They found a game trail on the other side of the ridge. They followed it
down the hill.
Yara saw deer tracks, pig tracks, and dog.
"Wolves," the professor announced. "Big ones."
They found a huge turtle. It's shell was more than a meter wide.
"No people here," the professor announced. "The first thing our people
did on this continent - we ate all the big turtles. Similar reports on
two other branes. Oh, my," the professor stopped her chevaline. She
smiled. She nodded ahead. "A gomphothere."
"Looks like a mammoth," Yara said.
"With Down's syndrome," Sheena added.
"We won't starve," the professor said.
Sheena said, "How would we carry that much meat?"
"Not the elephant, what they eat. What they eat, we can eat, mostly." She
pursed her lips. "On the B side, predators. Something here eats
elephants. Guaranteed."
"Saber-tooth tigers?" Sheena asked.
"Something. Keep a sharp eye. If your chevaline alarms, don't ignore it."
The gomphothere walked up the trail, toward them.
The professor turned. She headed into the forest, going down-slope. She
went about fifty meters into the open forest and stopped. She turned.
A large gomphothere stood on the game trail, facing them, while a line of
other gomphotheres filed upslope. Mothers and juveniles. When the herd
passed, the sentinel turned and followed the herd.
Sheena looked at the professor, then at Yara.
The professor held up a hand. "Haven't seen any males, yet."
They waited. Eventually, three males ambled upslope, following the herd.
The professor waited a while longer. Then she nudged her chevaline to
motion again.
They followed game trails that elephants and bison carved out in the
wilderness. Twice they saw wolves. The wolves, however, avoided them.
Then they saw a truly large bear. On all fours it was still taller than a
standing human. They stopped and backed away from the bear. The professor
pulled her shotgun from it's scabbard. Sheena cocked her bow. Yara drew
her sword.
The professor handed Yara a bang stick. "Try not to die." She glanced
over to Sheena. "The dragon-killer. Not that tiny arrow."
"Okay." Sheena changed out arrows.
Yara asked, "Will an eight millimeter do much to a bear that big?" She
waggled the bang stick.
The professor shook her head. "Neither will my shotgun. Babchok? If he
charges, hit him in the meat, not the head. I'll draw him off so you get
a side shot."
The bear ambled away.
Later that day, the scan picked up a big cat. It followed them for two
hours.
Except for those tense moments, the day passed pleasantly. Sunny.
Relatively warm.
When she wasn't at port arms with a bang stick, Yara worked on coding
problems.
They weren't home, and she didn't know how to get home. It should have
worked, reversing the coordinates. But it hadn't. Yara searched and
researched. She had her secretary derive formulas.
They stopped at a river to fish and to gather berries.
The professor said, "Who exactly are you?"
Sheena looked on with interest.
"I'm not supposed to say."
"No talent with magic. You're not fey, are you?"
"This is a fey body."
"They can body hop?"
Yara nodded.
Sheena asked, "Jas?"
"Yeah."
Sheena snickered.
The professor said, "Jasper Rostami?"
Yara nodded. "Was I in one of your classes?"
"No. But you made a name for yourself. Well, shoots. Let's give up on
titles out here. What do you want to be called?"
Yara thought about that. She looked at Sheena. "Jas is fine."
The Professor bumped fists with Yara. "My name's Eruca, but you can call
me Ruka."
"Right. If we get back to the world, though...."
"If?"
"When. When we get back...."
"I'll call you Princess. Got it."
"I was a straight B student. I made a name for myself?"
The professor snorted. "Brilliant coder, minimal effort. Too much Stones
and Scepters."
"Not feeling like a brilliant coder at the moment," Yara said.
The professor asked, "Is Morgana Gris a body swap, too?"
"Not that I know of."
"Something off with that girl."
Yara smiled. "Too much Stones and Scepters."
"Jas, why didn't you tell me?" Sheena stood with hands on her hips.
"I'm not supposed to. If you get tortured ... bad for you, bad for me.
Bad for the princess. Interdimensional scandal. They have their version
of paparazzi, I'm told."
"And the other Jas. That's her?" Sheena asked.
Yara nodded.
Sheena looked down. "You're bleeding."
Yara looked down, puzzled.
Blood.
Sheena chuckled.
Yara picked her bloody pants away from her thigh. Her pants were soaked.
"Oh," she said. "That. I'll be in the river, washing."
Frigid. Rivers in New Amsterdam, in November. She stripped off boots,
socks, pants, leggings, panties. How did she get blood on her socks? She
washed herself first, then her clothes. Her boots had blood on them. Her
blouse.
Fuck.
She had blood on her winter raincoat. How did it get there?
As Yara hung clothes on her wounded chevaline, shivering and naked except
for a bra, Sheena passed her a set of pink panties and a tampon. "I can't
fit in these panties anymore. Ass is getting fat. I'm not overeating.
Don't know why I'm gaining weight."
Yara eyed the tampon.
The professor asked, "You ever used one of those before?"
"No."
"Try a pad." Eruca handed Yara a menstrual pad.
They caught fish. Cooked them. Ate them. Then they headed north,
following the river on a big-game trail. Yara rode behind Sheena again,
wearing Sheena's panties, her Tonbridge skirt and vest, Jas's coat, a
poncho liner, and her boots.
The chevalines grazed as they walked. Yara's chevaline limped between the
two other vehicles, laundry flapping in the breeze.
Yara changed into wet clothes before they forded the river. She had to
wash Sheena's panties, her skirt, and the saddle. "What do I do with the
pad?"
"Throw it in the river. No recycling facilities on this planet." Eruca
handed her another pad.
In mid-afternoon, Yara announced, "I can get us back to the Red lands."
The professor asked, "You are certain?"
"Pretty sure. I found a return to sender feature."
"We're still too close to the invasion."
"That's the other problem. It might drop us back on that hill."
"Diamond Hill? Find another solution."
"I'll keep working on it."
They came to a fork in the game trail. South, or north?
The professor lofted her drone. They went north. They found a trail going
west just before evening. The professor lofted her drone again. She found
a large boulder with an overhang. They camped there. It started raining
again. Rain mixed with sleet.
Wolves found them just after dark. Yara flared the campfire with magic.
The wolves shied back.
She spit sparks at them from the fire. She hit three of them with burning
embers. The wolves backed away further. She found them on the scans. Yara
shaped a bit of fire the size of a tennis ball. She sent it flying at the
nearest wolf on the scan. She watched the fireball arc through branches
and avoid trees like one of those Red wisps. She missed her target. The
fireball splashed in the leaf litter.
Magic was cool.
The wolves left.
That night, she announced, "Holy fuck. I can get us home. I can also
cross over to the Red lands. Here, or somewhere near here. Wherever here
is."
"Putnam, Connecticut," the professor said. "I don't have GPS but the topo
maps match, Earth Prime, and here." The professor paused. "How confident
are you?"
"Pretty confident. Bulk space is not commutative. A plus B does not equal
B plus A. The square roots of negative one. I, J, K. I had to dig through
my math notes. Pre-calculus. Matrix math. Reimann manifolds. Wish I had
the internet."
"Congratulations," Eruca said. "Slacker."
"We need to find a thin spot," Yara said. "We're farther away from home
than before. I can hop us to Red lands, possibly the Green ones and try
again. But. I can't guarantee that the thin spots from here to the Reds
is also a thin spot from Red to Earth Prime. Interference patterns. It's
tricky math."
"Where's the nearest thin spot?"
"Back where we came from. If my cryptids-slash-UFO map corresponds with
actual thin spots."
"We have a two-for-two match. Bridgewater, Diamond Hill."
"Low-probability hits in Connecticut. Black dogs at Glastonbury and
Hanging Hills. Melon heads in Fairfield County."
"What's a melon head?"
"A cannibal."
"Doesn't sound auspicious."
"Plenty of places in New York. Lake Champlain is the best closest match.
It was number five on my list."
"The swamp in Mass was number one?"
"Yes."
"Lake Champlain should be easy to find. Hudson valley, then north. Are
any of the local hotspots on the way?"
"All of them, kind of. A zigzag path."
"We have a plan."
That night, Yara pulled up the Identity spell. She examined Jas's
profile. She changed it from Male to Female. She might be in this body
for a lifetime.
She matched Jas's personality stats to her own stats, as Yara. Some of
the stats gave her pause - was she really that obsessed with sex? - but
she shrugged it off. She could always change it later.
She swapped her identity to Jas. Both of her traveling companions had
been calling her that, anyway.
She found Sheena. "Hey, um. You know? I swapped personas to Jas."
"Okay."
"But that's a man's name, Jasper. I need a girl name. Jasmine? Jasilyn?
Jazz?"
"I know a Jasbinder. She's really cool."
"Jasbinder. Okay. Thanks." Jas leaned in and kissed Sheena on the cheek.
She looked at Jas askance. "Easy on the huggy-kissy, princess."
"Right. Sorry. Not sure what I was thinking."
"Not sure you are thinking. I'm still processing. Okay?"
