Early the next morning, a little past three, each fey employee received
notice that their consular passports had been warranted anew and that
quarantine was waived. An hour after that, the human employees of JL
Recovery Services were informed that quarantine was waived for them, too.
Team Five loaded up in one of the Range Rovers and drove off. Master
Hoose provided an address and directions.
Athan asked Yara if her passport had updated.
"What passport? I came here naked, except for a loincloth." And a collar.
"Besides, I'm contagious." She pointed to her glyphs. "So might she be."
Athan asked Brother if he could arrange for a new passport for the
princess.
Brother shook his head. "The ways are still closed."
"How did the other messages get through?"
Brother shrugged.
The breakthrough today was that Sheena's glyphs and collar included no
Hive code. However, they did confirm the presence demons in Sheena's
curses. Two imps and a succubus.
Just after breakfast, Master Hoose shut the inner door to the shelter and
wheeled it locked. They heard him shut the outer door and heard the bar
fall in place.
Yara rushed to the window. She saw Master Hoose walk past the carport. He
stopped halfway to the gate and waited, leaning on his cane. He spoke
quietly, never turning his attention from the road in front of him. Yara
could hear him clearly, as if he spoke in her ear. "Stay inside. Restrain
the women if you must." She watched him snap an eye patch over his right
eye. His clothes changed as she watched.
It was a rare fog-free day. The sun shone brightly on fallen trees and
leaning tombstones. Purple kudzu flowers decorated the greens and browns
of fall.
Master Hoose greeted the people he saw climbing over the fence and
wandering into the yard. "Well met, young travelers." He spoke in the Red
language. The men he spoke to were armed, and each wore a camouflaged
uniform.
"What's he saying?" Athan asked.
Yara said, "He's telling them to wait there and summon their leader."
Red warriors continued to file into the yard. Some tried to sneak in.
Master Hoose fixed each of these with his gaze and said one word in the
Red language. "Stop." And they did.
Thirty-eight Red warriors stood in an arc in front of Master Hoose. Then
two more strode in. These were obviously the leader and his lieutenant.
"Ah," Master Hoose said. "It has been an age. Are you well, old enemy?"
The leader spoke. "I have no quarrel with you. Stand aside."
"Do you not know who I am?"
A timer appeared on Yara's specs. 263 seconds. It counted down to 262 as
she glanced at it. Yara looked around. Nobody else here seemed to be
looking at his specs.
The Red leader said, "I find I am missing one of my charges. Have you
seen her?"
"I abide where you see me. The machinations of the Red Court are no
concern. Let us feast, speak of more consequential things. Come. Enjoy."
The Red Leader reached for his money purse.
Yara tapped her coin. She also activated Sheena's amulet. Another
countdown started.
188 seconds of 'time off' for her demons.
240 seconds on the other counter.
The Red Leader called out. "Girl! Come out! I have payment for your
services."
Master Hoose chuckled. "Chancellor, you are as rude as ever. Please tell
me peace has not broken out between our peoples."
"Who are you, old man?"
"And here I dressed up for ye. The cape, the hat, the eye patch? The
staff is smaller than it once was." He held up his cane. "A splinter of
the tree."
The Red Chancellor laughed. "Oh, please. A piece of the true cross?"
"The tree I hung from. Not the other."
The Chancellor's eyes narrowed. "I saw you die."
Master Hoose stood tall. "Did Ragnarok come and go while I slept? I find
life so very lively." Master Hoose wriggled his shoulders. He sighed. "I
am a simple innkeep in this age."
"You cannot be he."
Yara heard a wet sound, and saw Athan fall.
Brother stood before Yara with a silver coin. "I don't know how you
resisted his call. You won't resist mine."
Yara knelt before him. She called up a spell from her Seduction list. She
had unlimited use of those spells. She cast See Only Me, and smiled.
Brother said, "On your feet, slut. I'm collecting your bounty, and the
other one, too." He faltered. "She's around here someplace."
Sheena bashed Brother on the head with one of the wooden dance sticks.
She hit him again, and again. Then she kicked him in the balls.
He fell. Yara stomped on Brother's fingers. Again, on the other hand. She
kicked him in the throat. Then she and Sheena picked up Athan and carried
him to the autodoc. She watched the autodoc close and start to strip off
Athan's clothes. She said to Sheena. "Watch the traitor. If he stirs, hit
him again." She looked outside.
Master Hoose chuckled again. "Chancellor, I challenge ye to single
combat. You may choose a champion. Or fight your own battles."
The chancellor nodded to his lieutenant. The lieutenant threw a dagger,
faster than Yara's eye could see.
Master Hoose caught it by the hilt. He placed it in his sporran. "Thank
you for the fine gift. I will melt it down, make something useful."
The lieutenant bristled. He threw an ax. This also traveled faster than
Yara's eye could see.
Master Hoose caught the ax. He examined it. "Much too fine a gift for the
likes of me. I must return it." He flicked his wrist. The ax was gone.
The lieutenant dodged. A soldier behind him fell.
Master Hoose said, "You must teach the young ones not to stand behind a
target." He motioned with his cane. "Take away your dead. Combat can
wait."
60 seconds left on her counter.
112 on the other one.
Master Hoose picked something off the ground with his cane. He held up a
rusty, twisted nail. "Are fairies still allergic to iron? Is it your
unmaking? Or did they breed that out of you?"
The lieutenant spat. "I am no fairy."
"You have the manners of one. I can command all non-living things to
attack, and all the living and once-living to defend. That includes the
soldiers before me. And yet, I choose a simple bit of iron."
The Red Chancellor laughed.
Master Hoose examined the nail. "I am corrected. Alloy. Humans love their
nails. The whole yard is littered with them. Did you know they tie living
wood with iron? Heathens." He looked aside. "Please tell those on the
side not to creep up. Tell the men in the center to back away. I don't
wish to unmake any more than one fairy today."
"You wear on my patience, old man."
Yara's counter was rapidly ending. She did the only thing she could think
of. She summoned her own personal demons. They unfolded before her.
The succubus looked surprised, then she looked shrewd. The imps grinned.
Yara pointed to the floor with her chin. "That one. Fuck him until he's
dead."
"He's nearly dead, now."
"My offering to you. Take it or leave it. I can fold you back in."
Icky blinked. She said, "Boys, you take one end. I'll take the other."
She met Yara's gaze. "Then we will trade."
Master Hoose spoke loudly. "Behold the unmaking!"
A moment later, Yara heard a sound like a gunshot. She glanced back.
"Pray, Mistress Ick. Let me watch the show for the next..."
119 seconds.
Yara nodded to the window. "...the next three minutes. Then we can
dicker."
Icky said, "It will take more than three minutes to collect his soul."
Yara said, "Leave the lass alone for now. She has her own demons."
"We can ignore her if she ignores us."
Yara glanced outside. Master Hoose stood, leaning on his cane.
"You missed," the lieutenant said.
Master Hoose shook his head slowly. "I offer you time to yield. I shot
the bit of trash straight up."
"Yield? Bah." The lieutenant spat on the ground.
"Are you going to stand and take the blow? Step aside, at the least."
The lieutenant huffed.
"At least raise your shield, lad. Defend yourself."
"Has the nail fallen, yet?"
The Red Chancellor looked concerned. He glanced up. Then he looked to
Master Hoose. "Enough," he said. "Enough with this-"
Master Hoose held three fingers up. Two. One. He waited. Then he looked
disappointed. "It's late. Or maybe it-"
There was an actinic flash and a great boom that shook the house. The
outer layer of armored glass spalled away. The middle glass crazed.
Yara looked outside in the smoke and the dust.
Master Hoose remained standing. His hair and clothes were smoking.
The Red Chancellor picked himself up from the dirt. There was a crater
where once four men stood. The chancellor patted fires out in his own
beard.
Master Hoose cleared his throat. Yara heard it plainly. "Still have the
old allergies, I see. Your forty oaks have fallen. Eleven dead, um
twelve. Thirteen. You should tend the wounded, before Hel collects them
all."
"You've not seen the last of me, old man."
Master Hoose smiled. "Yaw, yaw, yaw. Do you yield?"
"I will pick my teeth with your bones."
The car alarm on the Range Rover started howling. The windows had blown
out, the side was dished in, two tires and the upholstery were on fire.
Master Hoose snapped his fingers and the car alarm silenced.
The motorcycle had fallen over.
Master Hoose leaned on his cane. He said, "I hope they weren't sons of
anyone important. I tell people we're not immortal. We simply live until
someone kills us."
Icky stood by Yara and looked out the window. "I like him. Mama
approves."
"Which one?"
"The winner, of course. Why haven't you fucked him?"
"Don't you have a soul to collect?"
"On it. I had to see what the big boom was."
Master Hoose came in the house and sat in his chair heavily. He said,
"They're off-plane for now. We need a new location."
Icky looked up from what she was doing. She said, "What about the other
house?"
Master Hoose glanced at the demons and then to Yara. "That is a heartless
way to kill a man."
"He deserves far worse." Brother was conscious again, but not lucid.
"Aye. Traitor." Master Hoose reached over and tapped on the glass of the
autodoc. "Athan! Tell your people that US Space Command lost a javelin.
Perhaps three? Thank them for their service. Don't give me that. You have
full internet access in there. Did you protect the lady?"
Yara said, "He fell. That was warning enough."
They heard the sound of scramjets flying overhead.
Later that day, Team Five returned with information and a replacement
vehicle for Athan.
Morgana, Jasper, and Tree Nose returned with another travois.
Steve, heavily sedated.
Nobody said anything about the orgy in the pantry closet, although
several of them looked behind the curtain.
Yara decided it was time to go fishing.
Morgana sat with her. "Tough day?" she asked.
Yara grunted.
"You catch more fish if you call them."
"I'm pushing them away."
"I see that."
"Thank you for rescuing Steve."
"Easier than the last time. We bought him."
"Why did you sedate him?"
"So Tree Nose wouldn't kill him."
Yara snorted. She smiled. Then she sighed. "Brainwashed?"
"Gods, yes. I don't think he's ever been raped before. It broke him."
Yara nodded.
Morgana said, "I like the spellwork you did on the grass. With the
amulet. All of it."
"Necessity is a motherfucker. Will Lady Red be mad I modded her coin?"
"No data. The old ones are a twitchy lot. We're headed out. Erm. We're
not off to rescue Melissa. There's a war on. We're doing our bit to cause
troubles in the supply lines."
"Can I trade with the princess now?"
"Ask him yourself."
Jasper stood over them at the end of the dock. He said, "We're out. We're
taking Brother's corpse with us. We'll throw it in the Red wilderness.
He's infested. It's not safe to leave him here."
"I'd like to trade," Yara said. "Can we swap bodies again? Please?"
"No. I'm making a name for myself, Jas. Besides, that body is still
cursed."
Yara sat silent.
"I commend you for the progress you've made. Far and above what I
expected. We're going to tear up Red country. If we survive that, we'll
rescue Melissa. Then we can trade. Acceptable?"
If we survive that. Yara looked down at her body. She might be in it for
the rest of her life. She said, "Give 'em hell, Princess."
Jasper smiled. "Who you calling Princess, Princess?" He pulled Morgana to
her feet. They left with Tree Nose and Onsei.
Squick, Squelch, and Ick snuck up to the end of the dock, hiding in the
weeds.
"I can see you," Yara said without turning around. "You're louder than a
herd of galumphelants."
They padded out to the end of the dock. They sat on both sides of Yara.
"Ready to fold back in?" Yara asked.
"No, we'll be good," Icky said.
"Truly?"
"The scary man made us promise." Icky crossed herself. The imps did, too.
"Not sure I trust the promise of a demon."
"It's all you can trust, playgirl."
"Thank you for killing Brother."
"Didn't have the heart for it?"
"I have the heart for it. But I saw my friend's face. She can't kill
squirrels. What would she do if I choked a man to death? Or cut his heart
out?"
"She would kick him in the eggs again. Tell her not to do that. Blood in
the seed. Vile."
The water roiled. Yara reeled in her empty hook and bobber.
A sword rose up from the water. A woman's arm held it. Everything about
the sword glinted, as did the water on the arm.
"Impressive." Yara grinned. She handed the rod and reel to Icky. Then she
took the sword. It was a stabbing weapon, but she could slash with it.
She probably could fence with it. She slashed and lunged with the sword
while sitting. "A fine gift. Thank you, Lady."
The imps backed away on their seats.
Icky stared at the sword, jaw dropped. "Oathbreaker," she said.
A scabbard fell into Yara's lap. She read the runes on the scabbard.
Oathdrinker.
The Lady of the Lake rose from the water. She said, "In this modern age,
I wanted to give you firearms. This will have to do."
Yara rose. She sheathed the sword and bowed deeply. Then, unsure, she
curtsied.
The Red Witch was fierce and beautiful. Yara tried to speak. She found
she had no words.
The Lady of the Lake spoke. "You are no Guinevere, destroyer of kingdoms.
And yet." She pursed her lips. "All women cursed with the curses you
carry, indeed all the people so cursed will be released from service when
there are no Red princes left in any brane or world. Find them. Break the
chain." Then she turned to the demons, who sat silent.
The imps gabbled. "We'll be good; we'll be really, really good."
The Red Witch grunted. She turned to the succubus. "Never, ever return to
my plane while you have the stink of Hive on you. Any of you. I will not
be merciful."
Icky stood silently.
The witch said, "I rewrote that scroddle code you call a contract. Your
marriage dissolves the moment you touch Red soil."
"I was also supposed to teach her a new vocation," Icky said.
"Assassin?"
"Whore."
"I rewrote that bit, too." The Red Witch smiled.
"Mine is not the only copy of that oath," Icky said.
"All copies of your contract read the same."
Yara said, "May I ask the obvious question?"
The Lady turned to Yara.
"Why are you sending us in to destroy your people?"
"If the Hive overruns them, they were weak. If you kill them, they were
weaker, yet. Ask the master of this house for a sniper rifle. The bow is
a fine toy but a rifle has a longer bite. Avoid plasma guns and lasers.
They kill only the supremely incompetent."
"How do I find Melissa?"
"Ask around. Follow the slavers. Kill as many of those as you wish.
Beware, they are better armed than most royalty. The Gray One says that
your girl is in a place difficult to get into but Hell to get out of. Try
the capital city. Surveillance there makes law-breaking unprofitable and
oath-breaking suicide. Jasper. Stand before me."
Yara switched identities to Jas.
"Human, take your demons to the Red lands and my pact with you is
complete. I require nothing more. Return to me. I'll give you a man's
body. If you must play the hero, be smart and patient. You have an entire
fey lifetime to kill Red princes. You have but a human lifetime to
retrieve your girl. She may be beyond saving, Jas. A living husk. Or an
undying one." She glanced to the demons.
Jas asked, "Is the Green cause just?"
The witch laughed. "No."
Jas stood silent.
"Child, the Greens celebrate life. Why do they war? The Reds celebrate
death. Why do they breed? Power plays, petty grudges." She motioned to
the demons. "I turn their war weapons against them. If the Greens offend
me, I will do the same."
She sank into the lake.
Jasper called up the identity spell. He now had four choices. The new one
on his list?
Whore.
"Did you do this?" he asked Icky.
She nodded.
Jas examined the code. "Nice work."
"I try. You see, technically, I can say I completed that part of the
contract now." She smiled. "You know you're going to try it. At least
once."
"If you press me into it and I fall out of it, I'll kill you."
"If you kill me, you bind yourself to me anew."
Jas unsheathed his sword. He put it at her throat. "Something kills
demons permanently. Don't inspire me to search." He sheathed the sword
again. He called up the Yara persona.
Yara heard the sound of a motorcycle. She watched Steve ride away. Yara
blew out a breath. "Ass toad. Where does he think he's going? Without
Sheena?"
Yara found Team Five all huddled around Sheena. The room went silent when
they saw Yara carrying a sword in a scabbard.
Yara bowed before Master Hoose. "I've asked so much. May I trouble you
for a harness to hang this sword?"
"A harness fit for a princess." He bowed in return.
"I'd prefer something useful."
Master Hoose laughed. He said, "I am working on the other project but
there are problems."
"The rifle?" Yara asked.
"If you had your diplomatic passport, no problems. I could acquire a
license in your name. I could make anti-tank weapons if you needed them.
As a fugitive with no status? No firearms."
Yara nodded. "Okay." She sat next to Sheena. "Where is Steve?"
"He went to town. I need tampons."
Yara thought about the makers in this cabin. Didn't Tonbridge have a
fabblet for tampons?
Meh.
Sheena logged on to PASsport. "Let's do this," she said. She smiled.
Yara logged on, also.
Reflet found herself in an orgy. The imps were fucking her and the
succubus was sitting on her face.
"Really?" Reflet pushed away one demon, then the others. "Up, up. Gotta
go. Apartment block across the street." She pulled on panties and a
tunic. Her belly was huge again. She couldn't see to step into her shoes.
She managed, anyway. At the last moment, she grabbed her sword.
Reflet waddled across the street, her pregnant belly splitting traffic.
One of her imps was not so lucky. Or, possibly a driver aimed for him.
The imp folded into a glyph on her neck.
"Idiot," she said, and unfolded it again.
"Thanks."
"Watch where you're going, baka." She ran up a staircase, knocked on a
door.
4C.
"Shouldn't we go to 36D?" Squelch asked.
"Hush."
The door opened. Imps rushed out. Imps rushed in. A blonde woman a green
tunic greeted Reflet. "Okay, we can go," she said. "I'll put Jduli on
autoplay. I hate to do that to this girl." Jduli looked concerned.
"Better her than me, though."
Reflet watched Jduli's overmind log out. Jduli's face went slack for a
moment and then brightened. "Well met, stranger. I feel I should know
you. I'm Jduli, half-elf, ranger. You?"
"Reflet. I'm friends with your overmind. I have to log off also. My
avatar can explain. Sorry about the demons. You get used to them."
Yara stepped out of the game.
There was backslapping and congratulations.
She asked, "What did I miss?"
Sheena said, "No glyphs, no collar. We stranded the demons in the game. I
have to log on and play now and then but I set the game up to lag. I told
it I have a 6G network. That's effectively 1/64th speed. If I leave Jduli
on autoplay, I only have to log on once every two months."
"Seismic!" Yara eyed her own demons.
Professor Helfast grimaced. "It won't work on your demons. They've
already tasted the real world."
"Tenesmic." Yara sighed. "New order of business. I have a mission. It's
insanely dangerous. We're all likely to be killed. Or slaved."
Sheena asked, "Melissa?"
Yara nodded.
"I'm in."
"You might have to kill people."
Sheena smiled. "Slavers?"
"Them, too."
"Where's my bow?"
Master Hoose touched Sheena's elbow. "A word, young soldier."
She stopped.
"When targeting a fey, assume they have wards. No extreme distance shots.
Get closer than you like, but far enough away you can escape. If you
don't have an escape route don't take the shot. Overkill. Those dragon-
killers are intended for fey. Expect counter-fire. If you miss, the
return fire will not."
Team Five refused, reluctantly in some cases. Professor Helfast pulled
Yara aside. They went for a walk.
In the cemetery, the professor said, "Cast a silence spell, please."
"You know about that?"
"It doesn't work as well as you think. It works well enough, though."
Yara cast the spell. It took time to weave it through all the plants.
When it was 80% complete, she said, "We can talk."
The professor nodded. "Have you seen combat, child?"
Yara considered her answers.
"I know you are not the princess."
"I haven't seen combat."
"It's over quickly or it lasts until you wish for death just so you can
stop killing. It's bloody. It's horrible. It's personal. Are you
certain?"
Yara shook her head. "I have to try."
"Melissa. Who is this girl, to you?"
"My friend. We were engaged, once upon a time."
"That is the very worst reason for fighting. You will die early. Or get
enslaved. She will suffer the more for it."
"What do you advise?"
The professor leaned against a tree. "Do you follow orders?"
"I can."
"I can won't cut it. If I tell you to leave Melissa where she is and let
her suffer, will you do it?"
"Why would I do that?"
"I'm not trading three lives for one. If I tell you to sell yourself into
slavery, so I can trade you for Melissa, would you?"
"Um. Maybe. Probably not. This body has a long life."
"If it isn't killed."
"I could trade out a human lifetime, or two, and still get the better
deal of it."
"There. You just talked yourself into a deal-breaker for me. It's all or
nothing, Princess. Live free or die."
"I'm not a princess."
"I am aware. I'm not putting my neck in a noose for an idiot who would
sell her life to trade for another."
"I can follow orders."
"I'll hold you to that. Come. Let us see if your demons can follow
orders."
"They won't. But they have a mission of their own. I may not see them
again when we touch Red soil."
"Demons return to torment you further. Count on it."
"I have to go - to rid myself of demons I have to travel to Red Lands."
"Do you know anything about Red lands or Red society?"
"No." Yara shrugged. "I can read and write in Red. Morgana taught us
lore, folkways, customs. If we stick to small towns and villages, we
might get by."
"We're scouting. Then we're coming back."
"Okay."
"Look. If I don't like what I see, we're coming straight back. I won't
care if Melissa is two steps away. We abort."
At dinner time, Steve still hadn't come back from the store. Sheena tried
calling his phone. It went to voice mail.
"Do you think he got abducted again?" Yara asked.
"He's not abducted," Sheena said. "The fucker went home." She showed Yara
the Friends feature on her phone.
"Keep calling him. I'll find out if Tonbridge makes tampons."
Steve didn't answer his phone. And, yes, the house could make tampons.
Pads, too, but Sheena preferred plugs.
