Jas woke cradled in the lap of Master Hoose.
She wasn't sure how she felt about that. Horny, but that was the
influence of demons. Or the basic nature of the Princess.
She opened one eye and looked up at the hauswood monster.
He smiled and winked.
It wasn't much different than sleeping on any other hauswood construct, a
chevaline, for example. Except that this one had human form. And smelled
male.
She rolled over and went back to sleep.
She woke to pizza.
"Pizza Pizang," Jas said. "How did you know?"
*Trust me, sister,* the Princess said. *Everyone knows. Tentacles on
pizza? Bananas? Pineapple?*
"I like it."

"Roasted cattail is tasty."
*Crobback. Wake me when the awful bellyache begins. I wish to gloat.*
The next three days passed slowly. Quarantine ended when the Red Witch
expressed irritation.
The doors opened. A voice, machine-voice female, spoke. "You are free to
go. Thank you for your patience. Jasper Rostami, a word, please."
Jas stopped.
"Please read and sign." A legal notice appeared on the screen by the
door.
"No rips? I can't activate any pylon on Earth Prime? How am I supposed to
accumulate mana? Research spells? Coding and math only does so much."
"There is war between fey factions and the Hive. At the moment, no one
blames us for this war. However, it would be easy to blame you."
"They started it?"
"Not funny."
"How do I register my claim with the Reds?"
"Hop a commercial carrier like any other citizen. Emigrate."
"You know I'm not in charge of this body, now that it's real owner is
awake." Jas signed the document.
"We acknowledge." Another document replaced it.
The government had seized all of her inventions. She couldn't publish.
Official Secrets Act. "I'm not signing this. I can't patent? How do I
protect my work? Make money from it?"
"Apply for government grants through our office."
"This says I can't even contact a lawyer."
"We will provide a lawyer who has proper clearance."
"You voided my claim to Earth 127."
"Difficult to explain how you got there."
"Dog butt. Private researcher discovers the nature of rips. End of

"Science fantasy. As far as the public is concerned, wormholes and rips

that would occur if we acknowledge that last week's bug sighting was
real?"
"Wrong, wrong, wrongo! You need people working on these problems, freely
sharing information. A billion researchers working hand-in-hand with two
billion engineers. It's Zulus against the Boers, spears vs. gatling
guns."
"More like stones vs. antimatter bombs."
"Exactly! Yes, it's high-energy physics, but it's easy to do at the
quantum level."
"Don't poke a bear with a stick."
"That bear plotted our annihilation. I am the weapon that was supposed to
kill us all!"
"Casualty estimates range from forty to four thousand. We examined your
threat. The pylons you invented? Four million to four billion dead. A
combination of the two? Possible annihilation. Do you see the problem
now, Mr. Rostami?"
Jas signed the form. "I'll remove Hive frequencies from the pylons. How
are you going to stop other people from inventing the same tech? It's
stupidly simple."
"You had the advantage of knowing it was possible."
"Right. I suppose you're going to want the pylons I already made."
"Yes."
"Anything else?"
"Jobs are available with the Bureau. We could use you, Jas. Researcher,
Crisis Response Team, you could almost write your own job description."
"I might take you up on that. Um. Is there any effort to rescue my ex?"
"We are working to recover all one-hundred and four people who were
abducted from this country this year."
"Any luck so far?"
"Every year we repatriate a few."
Jas ran around the road train and found Master Hoose with the chevalines.
"Where is Zunrita? I wanted to thank her again."
"You thanked her twelve times, lass. She's off. Think long and hard
before ye accept a yoke from the bureau. There's enmity between them and
her. It's an old feud - sky and water."
Jas nodded. "Can I borrow a chevaline?"
"You can eat it if you like. It's yours. These other two are mine."
"Oh."
"You did well, child. You surprised us all."
"I was a bit overmatched."
Master Hoose nodded. "Plans?"
Jas glanced at the road train.
"They hear what they want to hear. No privacy on this planet."
"Friends to see again. Rescuing Melissa seems like a fool's errand. I
know nothing of Red culture. I speak the language but I don't even know
if I have an accent."
"You do."
"I have no money here or there. And no way to acquire it quickly."
"Not to mention the slave marks."
"I've been speaking with the princess. If I can rid her of her demons
again, she'll...."
"She'll take what's hers, lass."
"If she rescues Melissa, it's all good."
"You survived her awakening. Don't step into the void." He held Jas by
both shoulders and looked her in the eye. "That would disappoint many."
"Who are you?"
"A listening ear. Stop by before you go."
On the way to Steve and Sheena's apartment, the Princess took over. She
bought a burner phone at the truck stop. She pulled cash from an ATM. She
stopped by the same self-storage place that Jas was renting from. She
pulled a purse from storage and checked it. The purse was inexpensive,
unmarked leathereen, fabbed in a home maker.
It was full of credit spikes, bearer bonds, bullion, jewelry. Wealth.
She dropped the burner phone into her storage cube and picked out two
others, seemingly at random. She performed a few internet searches and
frowned.
*What are you looking for?* Jas asked.
*A new face.*
She stopped at the front desk. "Mr. Tarhee," she said, smiling. She
leaned over, dropping both boobs out of her vest. "Favor to ask."
He grinned.
Jas watched her cycle through spells. The only one Jas could identify was

Yara crooned, "I'm looking for the illegal weed." She handled her boob as
Tarhee watched.
"Cigarettes?"
Yara nodded. She stopped playing with her boob.
"Try the Rez."
"Not that kind of cigarette." She cradled Tarhee's chin with the hand
she'd just had at her boob.
Tarhee said, "I'm out of the life. Not connected anymore."
Yara gripped his chin. She cycled through more spells. "Who is connected?
Who's the biggest snake in this snake ranch?"
He glanced at her boobs. "Sister, this is a Free Charter city. Knock on
any door. They're in the trade, providing services for them, or paying
insurance money." He held up air quotes for insurance. "Or else they're
college kids, accumulating debt and favors." His eyes lost focus.
She snapped her fingers under his nose. "I'm out of patience, Tarhee. Who
is the crime boss in this backwater blight? Where is this person?"
"Brennan Giles. He's everywhere."
She snapped her fingers again.
"Try the casino in Two Lisa. Last stop in this world, sister. Gone-gone.
Hasta la bye-bye."
"Exactly the person I'm looking for."
"Hope you find him."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
Tarhee remained silent.
She rooted around in his brain.
"Ew."
She made a few adjustments.
After accosting two more seemingly random people on the streets, Yara
stopped at the Free Clinic. She breezed past the reception desk, getting
buzzed in automatically. She bypassed two other employees easily, and sat
politely, waiting for Dr. Bumbaco.
*It says something that the most resistant mind I meet here belongs to a
reformed criminal,* Yara commented to Jas.
*What did you do to Tarhee?*
*I blunted him. He'll be able to find love now. Less obsessive, less
prone to violence.*
*You did something else.*
*Only what he deserves. You saw what is in that mind.*
Jas remained silent.
A woman came out of Dr. Bumbaco's office. She was dressed in a candy-
striper's uniform. She straightened her skirt. Her bright, vacuous look
disappeared when she saw Yara. "May I help you?" she said brightly. She
resumed chewing gum and blew a bubble.
Yara stood. She brushed by the candy-striper and into Dr. Bumbaco's
office. He was performing a breast exam on a patient. The room smelled of
old-people's breath. The doctor had thick glasses.
Yara froze the doctor and patient. She examined the doctor, frowning.
*Not the person you're looking for?"* Jas asked.
*No.* Yara turned around. She saw the candy-striper, whose name tag said,
Nurse Cutie.
"Nice trick," the candy-striper said, glancing at the doctor and his
patient. "You going to leave them like that?"
"No." Yara released the others. She apologized and left the room.
"My office," Nurse Cutie said. She strutted away in heels and white
stockings that had seams in the back. She opened the door to Exam Room
Two. "This way, please." She popped the gum again.
Yara followed, puzzled.
Nurse Cutie closed the door behind Yara. She touched the intercom. "Hold
my appointments, please. VIP."
Yara sat in the chair.
"That's my seat, dearie. You sit on the padded bench with the stirrups
and the paper."
Yara hesitated.
"It puts the patient at ease, sitting at a higher level than the
attending. Also, I can see up your dress." She smiled.
Yara sat on the bench with her legs together.
Nurse Cutie remained standing. "You obviously can't be bothered with an
appointment. Spill. Thirty seconds before I frog-march you to the waiting
room and tell Darlene to put you at the back end of the list."
Yara attempted to freeze Nurse Cutie.
The woman shook her head and said, "No." She glanced at her wrist.
"Twenty seconds."
"Various minds in this town tell me this is the place I need."
"I wasn't aware we were for sale."
"Services. I need a new face. New bone structure. A superficial change of
DNA at common collection points."
Nurse Cutie laughed. "Expensive and illegal."
"But not impossible."
"Make an appointment at BT Organic Docs." Nurse Cutie touched the bench.
A tel-ID appeared on Yara's specs. "While I run your name and bio past
Interpol."
"I'd prefer you didn't do that."
"Oh, honey, don't be clueless. What if you're wanted by the Triad?
Certain people and organizations?"
"Bureau 13."
"Oh. You just doubled the price, sweets."
Yara shrugged.
"Lose the ride," Nurse Cutie said. "It's too easy to track. Come back
here on Monday."
"Tomorrow?"
"Monday. Unless you wish to skip the quality part of Quality Control."
She examined Yara's glyphs. "Tattoo removal. Extra."
"Don't worry about the tats."
Nurse Cutie popped her gum again.
Yara said, "Bone structure and DNA."
The candy-striper shrugged. "The customer is always right. Taller,
broader, smaller, shorter? Male? Hypersexualized? What do you want?"
"They're good at catching bodybuilder mods. You can make me smaller?"
Nurse Cutie nodded. "Good for disappearing. I can make you look like an
average person of almost any population. It takes time, though. Weeks.
Months. Our nanotech is not at your level."
"Average Meso-American. Female."
"Meso. Central American, or meso-morph?"
Yara consulted her specs. "Both."
"Extra curvy?" The nurse cupped imaginary boobs.
"No."
"You might get that anyway. The mods tend to conserve body mass. I'll
increase pancreas size so you don't get diabetes. We can correct other
genetic misfortune. Now's the time."
"I'm good."
Nurse Cutie smiled. "Last question. Chimeras?"
"Oh, gods, no."
"Lost in translation, I think. Genetic evidence that you've come in
contact with others. Sexually, assault, other intimate contact. I can't
conserve chimeras. You will probably lose them. If your on-board
factories rely on eukaryotic DNA, you might lose those. Bacteria are
generally unaffected. Viruses, some fungi survive. Plasm mitochondria
slip through on occasion."
"I just need to change sampling sites."
"You're getting a full-body makeover. A free rejuve while you're at it."
"Don't need the rejuve. Whose DNA?"
"Manufactured to spec. In theory I could remake you into a full-blooded
Denisovian, or a Neanderthal with small bones."
Yara smiled.
Nurse Cutie wanted cash up front.
Yara released her body to Jas. *Go play with your friends.*
Jas wondered about that. It seemed suspicious. But, ya know, gift horses
and ginger. And all that. She hopped on the chevaline. She found Sheena's
coffee cart.
"I'll have lavender Raf."
"Ooh, aren't we all swish."
"Feeling extra girly today."
"I heard you got out." She handed Jas a steaming mug of coffee. "What
took ya?"
"Quarantine."
"They didn't quarantine us."
Jas sipped her coffee. "Government. How's Steve? Is he still Stevie?"
Sheena chuckled. "Yep. She's been playing your avatar, as well as hers. I
think the demons adopted her."
"I should probably log on."
Sheena nodded.
"Can I borrow a key?"
"Stevie's home."
Jas, playing as Reflet, sat with Squick, Squelch, and Icky. She verified
that her glyphs and collar were indeed these three demons. Then they
fucked. After that, Icky led Reflet to her new job, working upstairs at
Goblin's Dungeon.
Jas minded Reflet for a full shift as a working girl. In return, the
demons agreed to leave her be in real life. For now.
"Why am I getting special treatment?" Reflet asked.
"We're setting you up for a special hell later," Squick said. He smacked
her arse. "Or, you can manufacture more pylons and port us back to the
Red lands."
"What do you have against them? The Reds."
"I've been breaking bimbos for generations. I'm bored. This place," he
gestured to the game world around him, "has real potential. So many new
toys."
Then Stevie left for her shift, and Jas rode out to April City.
