Jas made simple snow shoes for the two of them. It took a few tries to
get the bindings right. They headed west. Magnetic 'north' was south in
this world, so Jas's headed east, according to her compass. They moved
cautiously, weapons at ready. They didn't know what predators lived in
this forest.
Jas shot at a rabbit, and missed. It hared off, literally, the moment she
let her arrow fly.
She shot from behind cover when she saw another rabbit. She got that one.
They found deer tracks, and tracks that were either very large deer, or
wild cows.
They saw wolves. When the wolves saw her bow, they turned and disappeared
into the forest. Or, maybe they reacted to the sight of Melissa's
shotgun.
They ate rabbit that night, seasoned with plant matter she'd brought over
from Spider World.
They made a snow shelter. They stood watches that night. In the wee
hours, before it got dark, they talked.
"There are people on this world," Melissa said.
Jas said, "Ayuh. Something hunts."
"What do we do if we find people?"
"Better than them finding us."
Melissa sat silently.
Jas woke up to find a tugatong spider nestled in her cleavage.
"Eeyahhh." She tried not to panic. She pushed it away gently.
It crawled into her rucksack. It was a small one, smaller than any of the
others she'd seen.
"Got a stowaway," Melissa said.
"I'm afraid to open the bag."
"Might as well. Let's see how many are in there."
There was only the one. Jas checked her quivers. Her vest pockets. She
checked the bedding. She asked, "What do we do with it?"
"It's bad luck to hurt one. The meat is supposed to be cursed."
"I guess we're fishing at the next big stream."
"Where did you put the rabbit guts?"
"Burned 'em. Don't want things following us, thinking we have food."
Jas foraged for food as she walked. She found fungus, but she didn't know
if it was edible or not. They found oaks, but if there were acorns, they
were buried in the snow.
While Melissa fished, Jas made more lake salt. She also hunted. A wooly
deer came by, but it was more meat than she needed. She watched it for a
while. Soon she saw other deer.
The wind shifted and the deer alerted. Jas stood.
They ran.
Jas went back to the oaks. She hunted squirrels. She came back to camp
with three squirrels, and pockets full of ice-covered berries she'd found
hanging from some tree. She didn't know what kind of tree and didn't know
if the berries were edible or not.
They ate fish and squirrel and fed the offal to their new pet. Jas
collected salt from her hat and made another brick. She tucked the
leftovers from their meal in pockets of her rucksack. She didn't trust
the spider in the rucksack not to eat the food, or foul it somehow.
"That salt tastes nasty," Melissa said as Jas placed another brick of
salt inside her pack.
"The spell works better with ocean water."
Jas made tea with one crushed tree berry. She drank half of it, poured
the rest out.
"What are you doing?"
"Seeing if it's poisonous. It doesn't taste bitter. It isn't sweet,
either. Might be food."
"If it's poison?"
"Say hi to the locals for me." Jas found she could fit all of her arrows
in one quiver. She'd lost, broken, or abandoned many arrows on this trip.
She filled the empty quiver with water. It leaked. It sloshed. But it was
all she had.
They climbed a hill. They saw a village by the river. Smoke. People.
They made a cold camp that afternoon. They ate leftover fish and
squirrel. They drank water from the repurposed quiver.
Jas activated her pylon and checked to see if there was a world closer to
Earth Prime they could go to.
Nada.
While there was still daylight, they watched the village.
Something was different about the people down there. The men wore capes
and top hats. The women wore capes. But the children walked around naked?
In this weather?
"We should avoid the village," Jas said in the morning. "Two women
alone?"
"We need supplies," Melissa said. "Blankets, cookware. Shoes."
"I'll kill a deer. Plenty of leather."
"We have gold."
"I'm not inclined to show it. I have some smaller coins. They might be
trade items."
"Can you do that invisibility thing again?"
"Not in the snow. Footprints give me away." There was a way to erase her
presence from every mind in the village, but first the villagers had to
be infected with mana.
No mana here, except the stuff she brought with her.
Jas said, "This is a bad idea." But they trudged down the slope to the
village anyway.
The village was two long houses and a bunch of smaller snow-covered
buildings shaped like teepees. As they got closer they realized the scale
of the place.
The villagers were tall. Very tall. And hairy. Bigfoot hairy. And, yes,
the men each wore a a top hat and a cape.
A child saw them first.
The child was taller than Jas.
Jas knelt in the snow and spread rabbit pelts on the snow in front of
her. She stacked a few coins on one pelt and bricks of salt on the other
two pelts.
The villagers came out, armed. Atl-atls, spears, and bows. Stone axes. A
sling, maybe.
No firearms. None visible, at any rate. They formed an arc around Jas and
Melissa, weapons ready.
"Don't smile," Melissa said. "We're the only primates who bare our teeth
in a friendly way."
An old woman approached, wearing nothing but a fur-lined cape with a
hood. She ignored the coins. She touched the salt, scraped it with a
claw. She tasted her finger. Then she grunted and made hooting noises.
The weapons got put away.
The woman walked around Jas and Melissa. Without touching anything, she
looked at their clothing. She looked at Jas's bow and arrows. Her sword
in its scabbard. Melissa's kitchen knife and shotgun. Jas's rucksack. She
clapped.
She took one brick of salt.
They laid two capes in the snow in front of Jas. They were fur capes.
Soft and smelling of woodsmoke. These were made for children, perhaps,
although no child here wore a cape. One cape was made of wolf skins. The
other, Jas couldn't identify. But it was warm and soft.
Jas nodded.
The elder took another brick. Others laid two more capes in front of Jas.
Jas shook her head. "Bowl," she said. She cupped her hands. "For cooking
in."
It took a while, but they figured it out.
At the end, Jas traded four bricks of salt for two capes, a basket that
would hold water, and a woven frame pack that Melissa could carry. She
tried for a top hat but they wouldn't sell that.
Then the villagers invited the girls to the village and fed them. Fish,
pork, venison and berries that looked and tasted like the tree fruit that
Jas had collected. Something alcoholic. Jas didn't drink much of it. She
took a sip and passed it along. Melissa did the same.
Wine, maybe. Fizzy, though. With hints of acetic acid and vinegar.
The villagers provided a small hut for them to sleep in. The hut was a
teepee made of small trees and woven with bark. It had a bed-pile of
evergreen boughs. It was big enough for two or three of the big fellas to
sleep in.
Jas said, "Bigfoot. Who would have guessed?"
Melissa shook her head. "Taku-He."
"Which is?"
"A bigfoot with a stovepipe hat and a cape."
"Do they eat people?"
"They steal dogs and pigs."
"I saw dogs and pigs in the long house."
In the morning, Jas woke with the spider in her cleavage again. She put
it in her rucksack. "Sorry, guy. I don't have anything to feed you at the
moment."
The taku-he wouldn't let them leave without eating. After the meal, they
presented the girls with gifts. Food. Two water skins filled with water.
And a small, long wrap. The old woman patted her belly. Then she patted
Jas's belly.
"She knows you're pregnant, Jas."
"Am I showing?"
"Apparently."
Jas hunted through her things. She found the box of laundry soap. She
panicked when the harvestman baby crawled out of her pack, but nobody
here schitzed. Cool. She offered the tugatong to the old woman.
The woman huffed and bared her teeth. She backed away.
"Right." Jas coaxed the spider back into her pack with a piece of dried
fish. She took her cook bowl. She filled it with water at the river. She
threw a pinch of soap into the water.
The old woman tried to taste it. Jas shook her finger no.
Jas washed her hands, her arms, and her face with the soap. "Missy, hand
me your bra."
They'd been fascinated with Melissa's and Jas's bras the night before.
Jas washed the bra in the bowl. She scrubbed it clean. Then she rinsed it
in the river and hung it on Melissa's frame pack to dry.
The old woman huffed. She hooted.
The villagers brought over a baby wrap that smelled of vomit and pee.
Jas added more soap to the bowl, and more water. She washed the baby
wrap. She rinsed it in the river. Then she hung it up to dry. Then she
rinsed the basket and hung it from her pack to dry.
She gave half of her laundry soap to the old woman.
Jas and Melissa followed the river. It meandered west and north.
Taku-he followed them, or shadowed them from across the river.
At noon, Jas called a break. They broke two holes in the ice. Melissa
fished in one. Jas made salt in the other. She used Melissa's hat for
salt, and Jas's cap for drinking water. Then Jas scrounged for edible
bark. A taku-he appeared. The villager showed Jas two more kinds of trees
with edible bark.
Melissa fed the taku-he roasted fish. The villagers provided fresh
venison and something like pemmican. Then they left, disappearing into
the forest.
"That went well," Melissa said.
"We got lucky."
"When did you become a pessimist?"
"The worst monsters out here are on two legs."
"Testify." Melissa held up a hand.
There was no useful jump available at this location.
They made good time on game trails along the frozen river. It was much
faster than trudging through deep snow. They saw wolves, and a bear, and
some wooly elephants. Jas didn't know if they were mammoths or mastodons.
She just knew was they weren't gomphotheres.
No useful jumps available at the place they made camp.
"Are you making rock salad?" Melissa pointed to all the rocks in the
coals.
"I'm washing my hair," Jas said. "I'm washing my body. And all my
clothes."
"You're going to freeze to death."
"I have a wolf-skin wrap. I'll be fine."
"Wish I had gotten shoes."
"Nobody in that tribe wears shoes."
It took thirty minutes to brush her hair after she washed it. She dried
her hair and laundry over the coals.
Melissa washed and did laundry, also.
That night, Jas pulled Spidey out of her rucksack and kept it warm as she
stood watch.
"Wish I knew if you're a girl spider or a boy spider," Jas said as she
fed it more fish.
Melissa said, "If she plants eggs under your skin, she's a girl spider."
"Go to sleep. You're giving me nightmares."
That night, as the moon set, Jas saw something moving in the snow. It
looked like a small bear. Striped face.
Jas nocked an arrow.
It didn't come anywhere near, which was good.
The next day they found a jump. To Earth Prime!
They followed roads to a small town. Signs everywhere announced the
presence of a nearby landmark.
Devil's Tower.
The first three businesses that Jas stopped by were all automated.
Finally, she found a bar. It was closed, but a passer-by provided
directions to the police station.
Jas leaned her bow against the wall and had Melissa drop her packbasket
there, too - with the shotgun inside it.
Jas knocked on the door and opened it. "Is this the police station?"
"Sheriff. Can I help you?" Sheriff Hugao looked them over with concern.
Jas knew that look. She also knew they looked odd. Fur capes. Melissa was
wearing tattered clothes from a bordello. Jas's outfit under her cape
wasn't much better. "Sorry to bother you," Jas said. "I don't have a
phone."
"Try the public library."
"Right. Which way?"
"Three blocks north. Between the school and the sports field."
They sat on the steps to the public library.
Melissa said, "I'm hungry. How long are we supposed to wait?"
"We have food." Jas rooted around in her pack.
"I can smell bacon."
"And coffee." Jas shut her eyes and sniffed.
"Uh-huh. Lets find a restaurant."
"And pay with what? A gold coin? I don't know if these are real. They
said they'd send a car."
"From Fairview?"
"Dunno. Maybe Bureau 13 has an office here. Devil's Tower. We opened a
rip. Bet there are rips that open naturally."
Sheriff Hugao pulled up in her ATV. She rolled down her window. "Which
one of you is the fairy princess?"
"Weapons in here, please. Drugs in this box."
Jas put her bow, arrows, and sword in the gun safe.
"No ray guns?" Sheriff Hugao asked. "Magic wands?"
Jas grinned. "I'm told ray guns are easy to deflect."
The sheriff grunted. "Learned something. Huh."
Jas pointed to the sword. "That is a genuine magic sword."
"What's it do, Princess?"
"Cuts through armor and protective spells like ... magic. Spines, too."
Sheriff Hugao sighed. She said, "Let's file that under diplomatic
immunity. Princess. Is that gold?"
"It's supposed to be. I haven't had it tested."
"In with the weapons, please. I don't have a safe."
Jas put her gold in the gun safe.
Melissa put her shotgun next to Jas's gold. "Kitchen knife?" she asked.
"In the lock-up. Fish hooks, too. Drugs in the box, please."
Jas said, "No drugs."
"With respect. Princess. I can see it." The sheriff lifted an eybrow.
"What? No. That's salt. Unless you're talking about my laundry detergent.
Or the fruit."
"Salt?"
"Yuh."
"In the drug box. Put your laundry detergent in there, too. What kind of
fruit is this?"
"Dunno. Just figured out it was edible ... yesterday? Two days ago."
"Did it pass ag inspection?"
"No."
"Zirlok. Double zirlok." The sheriff handed her bags. "Put it in the
biowaste. What kind of fish is this?"
"Dunno."
"Local caught? The meat? The, er, jerky?"
"Not local."
"Bag it. Toss it. Anything else I should know about?"
"One alien life form."
"Of course. Where is it, ma'am?"
"In here." Jas opened her rucksack. She pulled out Spidey.
The sheriff stepped back. "What is it?"
"Friendly," Jas said. She cuddled Spidey. "Unless you rile it."
"Put it back, please."
Jas smiled. She put the tugatong back inside her empty rucksack.
Melissa said, "It's a baby dogwalker. I thought it was a tugatong but now
I'm thinking maybe tullabong?"
"Rrr-right." The sheriff crossed herself. "Biggest daddy longlegs I've
ever seen."
Melissa said, "The tribes have legends about them. Seven meters tall."
Sheriff Hugao nodded. "Not doubting that for a moment. ID, please. Oh,
hey, you have ID. That was ... unexpected." She examined Yara's passport.
She handed it back. "Never heard of this country."
"It's not on this Earth."
"Imagine that. I got a call from the FBI. I had to verify the call was
legit. Fairy princess. We get some whack jobs out here by Devil's Tower,
but you guys. It'll be a few years before someone tops this."
"Fey, not fairy. They get upset when you call them fairies."
"Of course. Does the other fey princess have ID?"
Melissa explained that she wasn't fey nor royal. That she had ID but lost
it the night she was kidnapped. She recited her address, date of birth,
social insurance number, and tel-ID.
The sheriff perked up. She tapped her specs. "Kidnapped. Details, please.
Names, dates, places. Witnesses."
"April City. Sunrise Motel. They took me off-world. Auctioned me off with
two of my friends. Sex trafficking." She indicated the clothes she was
wearing.
The sheriff tapped her specs again. "Off world. Like ... UFOs?"
Melissa shrugged. "Didn't see any UFOs."
"Dimensional rip," Jas said. "Portals between worlds."
"What these thingies do." Sheriff Hugao pointed to the pylon and the
pylon parts on the counter.
"Yes."
"Stick with UFOs, dear-heart. It's more believable."
Jas cradled a paper cup of instant coffee. She inhaled the aroma.
Melissa chuckled from the other cell. "Never thought I'd be grateful for
Sanka."
"It's the little things," Jas said. "Makes you realize you're home."
"We're not home yet."
Jas nodded. "Quarantine. I hope they don't put the sheriff in with us. I
can't imagine sharing a trailer with her for forty days."
The sheriff unlocked the doors. "Burgers are here." She handed a bag from
American Beefy to each woman. "What's this about quarantine?"
"Contact with an alien species. You didn't touch the spider, did you?"
"No."
"I think you're good."
"Well, girls, they're sending a blimp. La-ti-da. The royal treatment,
princess. You'll be back in your palace in an hour."
Jas chuckled. "Hey, I know you don't believe. That's okay. Appreciate the
burgers and coffee."
"The feds are paying for it. Gotta say. Lots of people looking out for
you, Princess."
Jas watched her leave. She said to Melissa. "Starting to understand why
Good Tom never speaks to anyone before he infects them."
"Mind control?"
Jas sighed. "Not worth it. Hey!" Jas yelled. "Don't play with that! Don't
... ah fuck nuggets." Jas opened the locked door on her cell. She opened
the other door in the lockup. "Gimme that." She took the pylon from the
sheriff and turned it off.
"How did you get out?"
"Magic. You opened a rip. You're lucky nothing came through it and ate
you."
"It was snowing. I saw trees."
"Yah. It's winter here in most worlds. Wild in some of them."
The sheriff shivered. "Is that where you came from?"
Jas checked the coordinates. "Yes. Bigfoot World." Two percent charge.
Not enough mana to open another rip. She disassembled it anyway.
"Is that where the spider comes from?"
"Nah. We've been dimension hopping, trying to escape a war. People
chasing us. I promised not to open rips on this world. Don't play with
these, please. Don't play with the shotgun, either. It doesn't have a
safety."
Jas went back to her cell.
