Icky looked around. "Who says sex is dead in the States? Right, it's just
dead with you people. Okay, let 'er rip. Pun intended. Open a rip. It's
time to finish our contract." She kissed Yara on the lips. "You've been
fun." She tapped Yara's forehead.
A name reverberated in Yara's Audio2.
*Betheoate.*
Icky said, "If this goes well, I won't see you again outside of the game.
If you need me, call. That's my summoning name. Call if you're in
trouble. Call if you're bored. Or broken-hearted. Or horny. You can call
the boys, too."
The imps smiled. "Yeah, fat girl," Squick said. "Any time. Put two
fingers on your lips and blow." He glanced down to tell her which lips
she should finger. Each imp touched her. For the first time since she had
met these demons, they touched her appropriately.
Names rang on her Audio2.
*Sale Bias,* and *Yeech, not Yecch, love. See you when you log on.*
The professor watched as Yara snapped components together. She said, "One
sniff of trouble, we double back. And you close that rip. You can close
rips? Correct?"
Yara nodded. "I can close a rip."
"No troubles," Icky said. "I looked ahead. Okay, guys. You head west,
we're going north to the port city."
The professor asked, "What exactly do you plan to do?"
Icky smiled. "Normally I charge for information. Our contract." She held
up a finger. "Soften her up to the life. Done." She held up another
finger. "Whore her out in the Princess body and record it. Done."
Yara startled. When had she done that?
"My original orders have changed. I think I remember something about
Hiving the Green lands and then the human world." She shrugged. "The code
got corrupted somehow. I seeded the PASsport realm and now we're seeding
Red lands. I advise you to keep moving for at least two days. Because
once Hive rips start opening behind us, a bug version of the Apocalypse
starts. They move ten leagues a day on roads, something less than that in
trackless swamps." She held two more fingers up. "Seed two realms and
start a war. Good luck, Princess Jasper. I hope you find your damsel. Try
the local equivalent of St. Louis. Big slave-trading center. They keep
records. Maybe you can bribe someone or suck him off."
As Yara snapped together a Green pylon, Icky leaned in. She spoke to Yara
on the Audio2. *A word, Princess. Don't ever ask a demon or a bitch-
goddess-princess, 'What can I do?' You get what you deserve. I'm letting
you off light because that slippery fucktwat pulled a charlie on both of
us. Let her know I'm registering the deed and will seek to rebalance.*
As the rip opened, Icky yelled. "Someone owes me alimony!" Then she
stepped from swamp onto dry gravel.
Yara followed the other two through the rip. She bent down to fit through
the rip while riding her chevaline. She heard the sound of crunching
gravel. The sky was a brilliant blue, tinged with brown haze.
Before them stood a young woman wearing nothing but a loincloth and a
slave collar. She was a plain-looking girl, with a shaven head and slave
glyphs. She was dirty. Her feet were battered and bloody.
Obviously a Green, from her skin color and body hair.
The girl curtsied and held one finger to her cheek. "I am a poor, escaped
slave girl," she said, "making my way north to the port city. Whatever
will they do to me?"
"Icky?"
The girl nodded.
"I hope your glamour passes inspection."
"It's not glamour, playgirl. Close that rip. Chop, chop. First responders
are on the way. ETA, twenty minutes. You picked a good crossover."
Yara yanked on the cord. She pulled the pylon through the rip. She shut
the rip and pulled the pylon apart. She reassembled it quickly, after
snapping off two parts. The pylon now resembled an egg. Icky took it from
her hands.
The succubus said, "I'll drop this where it will do the most damage. Go.
You can ford the river anywhere in this gangue." Then the succubus
trotted north. She called out. "Don't drink the water!"
She moved deceptively fast. In just a few seconds, she was up and over a
mound of gravel. Yara lost sight of her.
The party galloped on gravel for a few kilometers. Then the gravel gave
way to marshy land. It smelled of muck and sulfur. Professor Helfast led,
walking her chevaline carefully across the muck. Then they came to brushy
land and a fence. The professor called out, "Trahit!" and all three
chevalines started trotting.
Farmland on the other side of the fence. There was a road, of sorts, on
this side of the fence. It was overgrown, but the chevalines had no
troubles.
They heard a distant roar from behind them. Yara looked back. She saw a
fireball descend in an arc from the south, near where they had appeared
in this world.
The professor stopped her chevaline and crouched it. The other chevalines
did likewise. The chevalines' awnings all swiveled to block their
passengers' views of the fireball.
"Wisp," the professor said quietly. "You'd think they'd send something
more aggressive to investigate a rip."
Yara was tempted to look around the awning. It depaqued somewhat, reading
her intent. She saw a foggy view of the east.
The wisp rose and started circling, in ever-widening circles. It spiraled
counterclockwise. At one point, it passed almost overhead. It paused over
their tracks in the muck. Yara hid under her awning. The wisp paused
overhead and started to descend but then it rocketed northwards.
"That's our cue," the professor said. The chevalines rose and moved
quickly through the brush.
They crossed a farm road. The professor stuck with fence roads. The land
was a patchwork of farmland and wetlands. After a few kilometers, the
professor stopped. She said, "My map is nearly useless. Topography is
similar, but they filled in most of the wetlands. She unpacked a small
drone. "I really hate wasting one of these."
Yara looked up. She saw turkey buzzards, circling. She tried a script
kiddie spell from her Seduction list.

Three of the buzzards flew closer, circling directly overhead. She
selected one at random.
Bind Familiar.
And now she had another set of eyes to see from.
Turkey buzzards lived in a world of smells.
Yara nearly retched. She sent the buzzard spiraling ever higher. That
provided some relief from odors. "Okay," she said, "I have use of a bird.
What are we looking for?"
"Describe what you see."
Yara grunted. It wasn't vision in the human sense. She sent the images to
her Viz2 module. Then she hooked that to her specs. She tried sending the
data to the professor's specs, but it wouldn't go.
No aerostat coverage in the Red lands. Wrong frequencies. She hadn't paid
her Turtle Island Semaphore and Speaker-can phone plan. Something. She
handed her specs to the professor. "Is that helpful?" she asked.
Professor Helfast swapped out specs. She squinted. She checked her maps.
"Northwest. Send the bird northwest."
"Which way is northwest?"
"Away from the sun."
Yara steered the bird away from the sun. The other buzzards followed
Yara's bird but soon abandoned it.
The three of them avoided a nearby city, picking their way across feral
land. They crossed under a road that looked like a railroad, corduroy
with timbers, but without rails. As they trotted into the brush, Yara
heard a horn, like a ship's fog horn. She looked back. A road train
rumbled by on giant rubber tires. The train of self-powered cars looked
to be more than a kilometer long.
Yara lost the link with her bird as they entered a forest of winter-dead
trees. The bird got tired, it slipped out of range, or the spell wore
off. Something.
Yara felt a tug. Her skin itched. Then she felt heavy and infested.
First one, then the other slave glyph appeared on her skin. A short while
later, the collar appeared.
Yara excorporated the demons. They unfolded on her chevaline.
Icky appeared in the same body she'd adopted ninety minutes ago. She
said, "Those fuckers ate me! I'm spreading their seed and they treat me
like food." She spat. "Idiot hive monsters." Then she looked around. "How
far?"
Professor Helfast said, "Forty five klicks, by the rhumb line."
"Not far enough! You're at a trot? A fucking trot?"
The professor sighed. "Avoiding checkpoints. They're mobilizing the
response to the Hive invasion. This whole area will be under quarantine
soon."
"Then fucking move!"
The professor glanced at the demon. She shrugged. She moved from a trot
to a canter.
"Fucking fuck! Do you see what's behind us? Wasps."
"The demon is afraid of bugs?" Professor Helfast asked.
"Fucking wasps fucking sting! It immobilizes you. The larvae it plants
eat you from the inside out." She shuddered.
"I need eyes ahead," the professor said.
"Searching," Yara said. "Anybody see a bird?"
"How about a fucking wasp?"
Yara glanced back. The wasps were too far away to capture.
Probably good, that.
A swarm of buzzing fireballs flowed at treetop level from the northeast.
They swarmed the wasps.
The professor said, "Airbase that way. Or the rapid response force."
Icky said, "It's a university."
Professor Helfast arched an eyebrow.
"Drop us off here. College boys love to fuck." The imps folded onto
Icky's skin. "Can I have one of your pylon thingies?"
"No." Yara only had five of them left.
"Gimme." Icky rummaged around in one of the cargo bags.
"Other cargo bag," Yara said. "No, one of each type, transducer,
distributor, battery. Go."
The succubus hopped off of Yara's chevaline and into the forest.
Professor Helfast watched Icky go. As soon as she lost sight of the
demon, she turned her chevaline, heading south.
Sheena said, "The demon said to head west."
"Do you follow the advice of demons?" Professor Helfast found a trail.
She consulted the map on her specs. "This way."
They headed upslope. Just before they got to the top of the hill,
Professor Helfast stopped. She pulled out a monocular. She took a look
around.
"Roads are closed," she said. "Clogged with refugees. Hive activity in
the mob." She put away her monocular. "This is too hot. Take us home,
Princess."
Yara had already snapped a module together. She activated it. The green
light lit for a moment. Then it went yellow, then red.
"The branes are too far apart here." She swung the pylon around, like a
directional antenna. "There. That way. Down the hill. Follow the road."
"Lead on."
Yara sped down the road at a gallop
Sheena yelled. "The Hive is here!"
Yara saw another swarm of fireballs.
The professor yelled, "Asap, Princess. Soonest. Open that rip."
Yellow.
Red.
Yellow, red.
It was a narrow, twisty road. At least the road was hard-pack.
A bug shaped like a raptor started chasing them. Soon they had a pack of
raptors chasing them.
"Any time now," Professor Helfast yelled.
Yellow. It flickered to green.
Yara opened the rip. She stopped her chevaline and pulled to one side,
letting the other two gallop through the rip.
A raptor jumped on the hind quarters of the chevaline. It nearly ripped
off the cargo tray. It bit the chevaline.
"Go, you idiot machine, go!" Yara kicked the chevaline with both feet.
Through the rip. She yanked the pylon through and closed the rip behind
her.
Forest. No road. The chevaline jinked, avoiding a tree.
A massive tree. A whole forest of massive trees. The chevaline jinked
again.
The raptor held on. It scrabbled with its hind legs, twisting around,
trying to reach Yara.
Yara pulled out her sword. The chevaline faltered, nearly throwing Yara
off of it.
It stopped.
Sheena hit the hive monster with three arrows. She hit Yara's chevaline
with two.
The professor stuck a bangstick against the monster's head and pulled the
trigger. She turned to Yara. "Turn that beacon off."
"Right." Yara turned the pylon off. She disassembled it to be certain.
Professor Helfast reloaded the bangstick and looked around. "Where are
we, Princess?"
Yara took a wild guess. "Earth?"
"Not the Earth I know." The professor turned her chevaline. "We should
move away from our entry point. But we need to burn that body." She
thought for a moment. "If the Hive was going to follow us, they'd be here
already."
Sheena said, "The Reds are probably busy for the moment."
The professor nodded. "Right. I'm up the hill to see what I can see. You
two burn the body. Big fire. Cremate it, okay? Don't set the forest on
fire."
They found a clearing that was clear of undergrowth. One of these giant
trees had fallen recently.
They gathered dead wood. Then they dragged the raptor's body to the wood
pile. They used Sheena's chevaline to tow it.
Professor Helfast showed up, drone in her arms. She smiled sheepishly.
"Sorry. I got lost. Forest as far as the drone can see."
Yara asked, "Green lands?"
"Don't think so. I didn't see any settlements. No sign of humans of any
kind."
The fey were human? Yara considered that. It seemed more reasonable than
the alternative.
Yara lit the fire. She watched the smoke. Gray skies. The smoke rose but
then flowed with wind shear just above the tree tops. Bare trees. A few
red or yellow leaves hung on, but most had fallen.
They added wood to the fire as needed. The bug smelled sweet as it
cooked. Fatty. It burned nicely. Eventually, only the carapace remained,
and some twisted bits that looked like webbed bone.
While the fire burned, Yara examined her chevaline. The back end was
shredded, especially where the sex organs would be on a horse. Both cargo
trays were detached. Damage to both legs. The chevaline had four puncture
wounds on both sides of its spine, and two arrows stuck in its right hind
haunch.
Professor Helfast asked, "Is it infested?"
"How do you tell?"
"If it explodes and a swarm of baby bugs boil up from the goo, it was
infested."
"Ew." Yara examined the puncture wounds. "Seriously. How do you tell?"
"Might be time to read the owner's manual, sweetheart."
It was infested. They used a bow saw and a knife. They cut three wedge-
shaped sections from the back right haunch. They threw those bits on the
fire.
The chevaline's back right leg was useless. The left leg was also
damaged. It could walk, but not quickly. They patched up the shredded
flesh to keep flies out of the wounds. They used one of Yara's blankets,
and some of Professor Helfast's tape.
"Know any repair spells?" the professor asked.
Yara almost giggled. "I know a heal spell. It involves sex. I don't know
if this is a boy or a girl chevaline and I don't wish to find out."
"It's a boy," the professor said.
"Is it in pain?"
"It's biomechanical. They feel pain, but not the way we do."
"I've got to learn shipwood spells."
"This is hauswood. Tonbridge hauswood."
"Shipwood, hauswood, same-same. I have spells in my library. They are ...
advanced."
They crouched the chevalines by the fallen tree and raised the awnings.
Mosquitos buzzed. The professor passed out mosquito repellant. They
watched the fire burn down. Professor Helfast gathered water from a
nearby stream with a 20-liter water bag. When the fire burned down
enough, she heated MRE packets in Sheena's Dutch oven.
"I have twelve of these," the professor said, indicating Meals, Ready to
Eat. "After that, we find out what is edible in this forest."
And what isn't. Yara searched for Edible Plants of New England and drew
no hits.
Right. No internet. Duh.
They ate. After dinner, Yara cobbed together a low-power infrared network
that allowed them to pass information from person to person, via their
specs. They could also transfer data via the chevalines.
"We're transmitting," Yara said. "8G."
The professor considered that. "Earth Prime frequencies. I wonder if the
Reds picked it up." She tapped her specs. She turned off the phone link
but enabled the wifi. "Been out of the game too long," the professor
said. "I should know better."
They all turned off their phone links. They shutdown the aerostat links
on each chevaline. They doused the fire.
Yara slept fitfully. She'd argued that they should set watches.
The professor nixed that idea. "The chevalines see and hear better than
any of us."
"What if a rip opens?"
"We die. If the bugs come through in numbers, there's no place in a day's
ride we could hide." She nodded at Yara's chevaline. "Especially with a
lame beast. Look. If they were coming, they'd be here already."
Yara looked around nervously. "The Reds?"
"A problem for another day. Even if they win decisively, tonight, this
will be a low priority investigation. Someone ripped out after
encountering bugs. Near the university. I imagine a few people hopped
out.
It rained. Yara listened to sounds of rain hitting the awning. She
wrapped up in Jas's winter coat. Gusts of wind sometimes sprayed rain on
her face. Mosquitos buzzed her ears.
At two in the morning, something large crashed through the forest on the
other side of the ridge. Yara woke with a start. She checked the scans.
Nothing larger than a opossum on this side of the ridge. She laid there
for a while, listening to the rain.
"Can't sleep?" Sheena asked.
"Meh."
The professor said, "Voices carry. Hush."
Yara checked the scans again.
She eventually fell asleep.
