Jas made it to Lake Champlain by mid morning.
It didn't look like much, at this end.
Jas snapped a pylon together to pirate Red Witch mana. She sent a text
message to Sheena and Professor Helfast.
*New camp at Location 5. Will grow mana here when I can.*
She cut off the tiny rip that allowed her to make phone calls but
continued to port in Red Witch mana.
Yellow, and the transfer rate was slow. This would take a while.
She pulled up one of her other pylon kits. On a whim, she snapped it
together to form a green pylon.
It activated.
She dialed in coordinates for Earth Prime.
Green lights - and accumulating mana quickly! Lo batt no more.
She could go home.
"Oh, wow." Jas smiled. She sighed. She had to wait for the pylon to
charge somewhat, but should be able to open a rip in just a few minutes.
She could bring all her chevalines.
"Everything except the shotgun," she said aloud. She hunted through her
cargo. She found her purse on another chevaline, found her wallet and
Jas's ID. She prepared a glamour spell so that she would look like Jas
when she crossed over.
She was cinching up cargo bays, standing in snow, when a rip opened up
behind the chevalines.
"Gah." Jas's heart hammered. Where was her bow? Her shotgun?
No time, no time. Soldiers had already ported through. They had weapons
trained on her.
Firearms and crossbows. Odd-looking armor and helmets.
Fey.
Jas called up a shield spell. She drew her sword.
One of the fey spoke. From his uniform, he was an officer. "Lady. We are
your personal guard. Do you not recognize us?"
He'd spoken in Eradi.
Jas replied in the same language. "A guard betrayed me. Stand back."
The queen stepped through the rip. It closed behind her. "I betrayed
you."
Oh, great. Now, what?
Glamour, glamour, glamour. Did she have a spell to see if this was
actually the queen?
The queen laughed. She blew away Jas's shield spell with a flick of her
finger.
A spell added itself to Jas's library.
True Sight.
"I am who I appear to be," the queen said. "Check it."
Jas scanned the code on the spell. It seemed to be what it was labeled.
She activated the spell. Nothing changed. She sheathed her sword.
"Fine toys," the Queen said, inspecting the chevalines. "But they stink
of Hive."
"Not hive, Lady," Jas said. "Similar engineering, though."
"Have you forgotten your manners?" The Queen peered distastefully at Jas.
"Actually, Lady, yes, I have." Jas bowed. Then she curtsied.
"Who are you?" the Queen asked. "No matter." She touched Jas's forehead.
Yara woke up.
Jas expected oblivion at that moment. She was surprised to see that she
was still conscious.
But not in control of this body.
Yara bowed deeply, touching the snow with her nose. "My queen," she said
in Eradi.
"You have caused us unceasing trouble. How ever did you escape?"
Yara rose. "He put me in a brothel and whored me out as a common slave."
"You will learn your place. How did you rid yourself of curses?"
"I did not. My champion freed me."
"A human?"
"Yes, mother."
"You share minds in this body?" she asked.
"Actually, I was sleeping."
"I will have this human flayed alive. He dares?"
"No, mother. I agreed to it. He served me well."
"He started a war. It was supposed to be a limited war. A diplomatic
incident. Gain a world there, lose a world here. Skirmishes."
"The Red Chancellor bargained faithlessly."
"Ever and always."
"Do you find your lands invaded by the Hive?"
"No. The enemy was invaded. Why?"
"He bargained with the wrong hive mind, I suppose. I was cursed to open
portals in our lands. Also the human worlds. Me. They used my body as a
hive brood."
"Unproven."
"You are willfully blind, mother. You want a child? I'll farrow children
until my bones fail. But the Red Chancellor is ever the Red Chancellor.
He seeks to end us all. The hive will feast on all our corpses."
"You will go home now. We will stop this war."
Jas struggled to give voice to her emotions. She spoke with Yara's mouth.
"It's a trap. She cannot go home!"
Yara held hands to her mouth. She smiled.
"Filthy beast," the Queen said. "Get out of my daughter's mind."
"Wait," Yara said. "Let him speak. It seems important." Yara stepped
aside, inside her own body.
*Speak,* she said.
Jas took control. "The demons left warning. They registered the deed and
will seek to rebalance ... something. I believe the contract will renew,
the curses will reappear and Hive portals will open in your world."
The queen sneered. "I can deal with demons."
"Pardon me for asking, but can you deal with the Hive? In great numbers?"
"I can. We are providing aid to the Narwa as we speak."
Narwa, red.
"Narwa," Jas asked. "Tsurgi?"
"That is their name for themselves."
"If you bring her home, your lands may be invaded, also."
"Be gone, champion. You have done your deeds. Go to your reward." She
reached out to touch Yara's forehead.
They heard a voice in the still air. "Hold!"
Jas heard the rattle of weapons behind. She felt Yara take control again.
The soldiers lined up. They stood on the beach now, between the lake and
the chevalines.
A woman rose from the lake. She bowed slightly.
"Cousin," the Queen said. "Well met."
The Lady of the Lake asked, "Has your house lost its honor? Is the word
of a royal not binding?"
"What word?" the Queen asked. She turned to Yara. "Child what have you
done?"
"A simple contract," Yara said. "A body for a body."
"I will pay the blood price."
The Lady of the Lake spoke. "Oh, Nunu, please reconsider."
The Queen hesitated. "What have you done?"
"He still has quests. If you pay his blood price, you accept his
obligations."
The queen turned to Yara. "What is this quest?"
Jas spoke. "Two quests. Free a specific human woman. Return her to her
world. Unbind her from her demons."
"Easily done. Who is it?"
"Her name is Melissa. She was my betrothed."
"Not worth my time. Where is this person?"
"The princess knows. Not this princess. The other."
The Lady of the Lake spoke. "Nunu, hear his second quest before you
accept his obligations."
The Queen sighed. "I am reduced to gift-giving and wish-granting. List
your second quest. Human."
"Kill all the Red princes."
"All of them?" The Queen looked concerned.
"That's my understanding."
The Lady of the Lake spoke. "This includes those in Green lands who hold
a Red title, babies and the yet-unborn, and also those who entertain
claims of royalty."
"What makes you think you can kill even one Red prince?" The queen
examined Yara-Jasper.
The Lady of the Lake spoke. "Sixty percent of the royal houses report
loss. Yet his focus is still on the first quest. Those he killed are
byloss. Incidental. Diversion from his true purpose." The Lady of the
Lake stood beside the queen. "I present Jasbinder, destroyer of kingdoms.
He was on his way to check the slave registry in Two Waters when war
broke. He escaped here to save his fellows and was stranded when you cut
off the colonies from all source mana."
"I am fighting a war."
"When the Eradi mana fountain failed, he created his own sources. He was
on his way to finish his quests, albeit after a short delay."
"A human started this war?"
"You started this war when you cursed your own daughter. She swapped
bodies with a champion and carried the war to your enemies. She still
fights in his body, harrying supply lines. This champion shed your curses
like so many fleas and then also carried the war to your enemies."
"A human broke my curses and created mana?"
The Lady of the Lake nodded. "That reminds me. If you erase him, you take
on the demon contracts yourself. This champion is in the middle fifty
percent by every measure his society values. The mana he creates is
better than yours. He seeded this world with three varieties of it. He
named this world. It is his to claim."
"That makes him dangerous."
"The Tsurgi agree. That's why they gave his world and his kind to the
Hive - or attempted to."
"You've ever had a soft spot for humans."
"I taught them no magic. I abide by the treaties. You do not. Two realms
fell to the Hive, or will soon. Add your home to the fallen, as you will.
My home will not fall."
Master Hoose appeared by the chevalines. He didn't come in through a rip.
He rose from the ground.
The Queen turned to Master Hoose. "Who are you? What are you?"
"I am master of this house. I knocked down the forty oaks. They stood
against your daughter and fell before me." He patted a chevaline. "Did I
hear correctly? You betrayed your daughter?"
"A mother must correct her child."
"Pardon me for speaking plainly, but how many enemies does a queen need
while conquering Red lands and standing against the Hive?"
The Queen turned to Yara. "Child, come home."
Yara hesitated, then shook her head.
"You defy me? I disown you. Banished. Do not return home. Denatured. Do
not use our magic, forever more."
The lady of the lake spoke. "Did you not hear? She doesn't need your
magic, Nunu. Hers is more advanced than yours."
"Bah." The Queen opened a rip. She stepped through it.
Her guards followed.
The lady of the lake turned to Yara. She said, "You should rewrite all
that code. Even the comments. Nothing should remain in Eradi, or Eradi
script. Rewrite the Tsurgi code, too."
Princess Yara said, "I cannot."
"The one within you can."
Jas struggled to speak. She said, "I'll set my secretary on it. Do they
have copyright, or copyright protection?"
The Lady of the Lake sighed. "Lawyers are a blight on every world. But I
wouldn't worry about copyright, unless you're selling it back to them.
Come, young adventurer." She held out her hand. "Or do you prefer this
world with its muddy roots?"
Jas turned the green pylon off. She disassembled it. Then she stepped
back and let the princess take the hand of the Red Witch.
The Red Witch studied the princess. "Two natured," she announced. "Does
your other self have troubles with the landlord?"
"I'll ask her when I see him. Apologies, cousin. I just woke up." Then
Princess Yara grunted. She examined her body. "Pantalons? I suppose they
are practical for riding. What did you do to me, human? I look like a
cow."
*Eh?*
"I have teats." She felt her hips and arse. "You've been overeating."
*I dosed you with valentine, so you won't get pregnant with Hive brood.*
"That is a possibility?"
*Nearly certain without valentine.* Jas groaned internally. *I think it
has side-effects.*
"Explain."
*Your demons are hybrids. They look and behave like demons but sire Hive
monsters.*
They arrived just outside of Fairview. Master Hoose stopped the chevaline
he was riding and motioned for the others to stop. "Customs inspection,"
he announced.
Jas glamoured up as himself.
The slave glyphs and the collar manifested. Jas sighed.
The glyphs were covered by clothing. She made no attempt to uncover them.
Almost immediately, the imps started molesting her, unseen and
discorporated.
She would shudder through an orgasm soon.
Jas used a charge of her coin.
Yara took control for a moment. She tugged at her collar. "I thought I
was rid of this."
Jas spoke internally. *The demons released me from your obligations. Not
you.*
First they were buzzed by a drone. Then an airship parked overhead. A
brush truck came calling next. A woman stepped out of the truck. She was
dressed in an Americana three-piece suit.
Jas said, "Men in Black? Truly?"
The truck trained an antitank weapon on the middle of the three visitors.
Jas.
The government employee said. "Bureau 13." She showed a badge. "Names,
origin, purpose of visit."
Master Hoose placed both hands on the broken steering bar of his
chevaline. He glanced up. "Park that airship a skosh to one side. That
way you can drop javelins as needed."
"You. The one who released three javelins from orbit?"
"Only needed one, as it turned out."
"We've been waiting to speak with you."
"I had business off-world. This person has a claim to stake, I believe."
He indicated Jas.
Jas handed the woman her ID. "I am Jasper Rostami."
"No you're not."
"Actually, I am. In part."
"Drop the glamour, Princess."
"Okay, true story. I am Jasper Rostami. This is the Princess's body. I'm
riding it, for now. She's also in here. It's complicated?"
"You'll have to provide proof."
"I'm not sure how, but sure."
"Origin?"
"Earth 127. I call it Oz. I've been told by these people, and others,
that I can lay claim to it. I also have patents to file."
"We are aware. What inspired you to rip to Earth 127?"
"A math error?"
"Why is it yours to claim?"
"I seeded it with industrial seeds. Three types of magic."
"Four," Master Hoose said, "If you count Earth Prime tech. His beastie
dropped seeds in two river systems."
"Hauswood seeds?"
"Shipwood, actually."
"How difficult is the hop?"
Jas said, "Costly. I drained four pylons getting two people over. The
branes touch, though, in at least one place."
The Red Witch said, "Verified." She handed over ID. "We registered a
claim with the Eradi. The Tsugi may contest the claim, but they're at
war. I'm not traveling there to register."
"You ported in from Glastonbury."
Jas said. "No. Glastonbury is a poor match. Porting from there is
possible but costly. I found a better hop."
"Location Five?"
"Yes." Jas felt a stab of annoyance. "Did you debrief the other two? Are
you monitoring my comms?"
The woman nodded.
"Then you know who I am."
The woman checked her specs. "You check clean. No Hive contamination."
Jas smiled grimly. He glanced at Master Hoose and the Red Witch.
No reaction from either of them.
Jas shook his head. "Wrong. You need to update your equipment. I'm
infested. I'll teach you how to look for it."
The woman from Bureau 13 blanched. She spoke rapidly to her specs.
"Oh now you've done it," the Red Witch said. "Quarantine. Or worse." She
looked up. "They're moving the airship, you idiots."
Master Hoose said, "I have a backup at a secure location. It will be but
a brief pang."
The Red Witch nodded.
Jas said. "Guys, they need to know. If they find out later that I hid it
from them?" Jas giggled nervously. "I don't want to deal with that.
Everyone I come in contact with will be burned out or quarantined. Lady?
Agent? Yoo-hoo. Bureau Five?"
"Thirteen."
"Agent Thirteen, the Hive I carry is encapsulated. I carried it here
before I knew its nature. Nothing here was infected. It's set to trigger
on other worlds."
"How do you know this?"
"I examined the code. Burn me out or study me. Personally, I'd prefer you
study me, because I don't have a backup. Or, ya know? I can leave and
take my biotech with me. You'll never see me again."
"Don't move. Keep your hands where I can see them."
"Right. If you're dropping a javelin on me, step away. I've seen what
those do. I have several items in my cargo bays. Bridging tech between
human and fey. Professor Helfast insists that I patent them. Pylons,
industrial seeds, a small library of spells. I can teach you how to
create mana, instead of importing it via pylon. Green and Red. I
understand how portals work, Red, Green, and Hive. I know a bit about
demon tech. Tell you what. I'm going back to Earth 127. Let me know when
I can return."
"Stay where you are."
"Oh, please. I'm not getting turned into plasma for your entertainment."
Jas reached into her cargo bay. "If I'm not around to explain, be careful
how you snap these together. They open portals to God knows where."
"Wait. Do you agree to quarantine? Can you wait for a quarantine truck?"
"That bush truck is not equipped?"
"It's not rated for Hive."
"Sure. I can wait. These other two are not contaminated, as far as I
know. The vehicles, cargo, all of it. Clean. Just me, personally."
*What the fuck?* The princess bubbled to the surface. She said,
"Gentlepeople. One of the two souls in this body is Princess Yara from
the Green lands." She tapped the display on her chevaline. *What is a
javelin? Where will it come from?*
*Orbital weapon. Kinetic. Impact is Mach 10, plus.*
*Speak in Calen.*
*Green?*
*Yes.* Yara set the lidar and radar to look up. She spoke aloud, "I have
a backup body, but it will cause an interworld incident if you nuke me."
Jas explained what an orbital weapon was and was not.
*Open the portal,* the princess said.
*They'll fry us where we stand.*
*Open the portal!* She started snapping pieces together.
*No. Wait. That's Hive. Don't snap it together that way.*
*What! Hive? Why in the hells did you make a Hive portal?*
*To open them in Red lands.*
*That's horrible.* She dropped the pieces.
*Your other self is inciting a war. Is that any less horrible?*
*Yes!* Princess Yara spoke. "Maybe you should nuke us. My other self
informs me that we carry A and B components for a Hive portal."
*A, B, and C, actually. And you have to snap off a piece as a safety.*
"Shut up!" Yara shook her head violently. "Sorry officer, I was speaking
to my other self. If you kill us, don't use the equipment we carry until
you understand exactly what it does. Or nuke us. Personally, I would
order us off-planet and then nuke the spot I stand on."
"We have experience with the Hive."
"And you survived?" Yara sat tall. "I salute you."
"What is the nature of that portal?"
"Right. Hang one. Let me trade out personas. Jas, you're up."
Jas spoke. "A, B, and C components. Depending on how you snap it
together, you get a Red portal, or a Green one. If you snap off one of
the safeties and assemble it a third way - to make an egg - you open a
Hive portal. They flood the area in large numbers almost immediately."
"How did you make this? When did you make this?"
"I used a Tonbridge maker. Any household maker will do, though. If you
can make a sewing machine, you can make a portal."
"Command wants to know why you made a Hive portal."
"Oh. Initially I wanted to see how they worked so I wouldn't make one by
accident. Then, ya know, as a bit of misdirection. I had one, may as well
use it. I used a Green portal to enter Red Lands. After we ripped, I
reconfigured it to Hive. I didn't want the Reds looking for Green magic.
I don't know if they can backtrace the signal here...."
*They can. Instantly.*
"The Reds cursed this body. I was originally programmed to open Hive
portals on Green lands and on Earth Prime. That pissed me off."
The agent listened to her specs. "You reprogrammed the curse? Return to
Sender?"
"I can't claim credit. I met someone important. They flipped the curse.
But I fabbed the Hive portals."
*Champion, we need to talk.*
While they waited, Jas unpaused her demons. She stripped down and changed
clothes. She wore the vest and skirt instead of pants and blouse. She was
fully aware of the cameras on the bush truck, and the agent's specs. It
embarrassed her, but changing clothes seemed preferable to having to
explain a string of orgasms.
A road train with five cars rumbled onto CR 616.
The agent from Bureau 13 spoke. "In. All three of you. Vehicles and
equipment, too."
The inside of this armored car had seen heavy use. There were scratches
and dents in the walls and the floor. Evidence of acid damage and fire.
Sections of the floor and wall had been replaced.
It was a surprisingly comfortable ride - to wherever they were off to.
There was an office with three cubicles at one end of the car. Each cubby
had a seat and comm equipment.
Jas spent the next six hours in one of the cubbies. She answered
questions. She tried to remain patient when they asked her the same
things again and again.
She showed them the glyphs and the collar, and how Hive code was hidden
in the folded demons.
Jas also showed Bureau 13 how she had stranded demons in the game
universe, and how that universe was now infested with Hive monsters.
"It fulfilled part of the contract," she said. "The game universe is part
of our brane. I wish I could claim credit for this but I had help. JL
Recovery Services, among others."
"How dangerous is this infestation?"
"It uses stock monsters they already had on file. I think any of the
demons could invent new monsters but they seem content with the status
quo. As long as we keep playing the game."
"We would like to speak with your demons."
"I can manifest them here."
"Um, no? This containment is not rated for demons."
It wasn't rated for Jas, either. She saw several flaws in their security.
She could walk out at any time. Instead of pointing this out, though, she
said, "Okay. Log on to our game universe. Um.... Look for a server named
Ventures Limited. Eight of the nine demons I've had the misfortune to
meet are on-line. My three have Hive connections. The others are typical
demons, I'm told. Dangerous as hell." Jas smiled briefly.
They also interviewed the Princess. She was considerably less chatty. She
stuck to her story, that she'd only been awake and aware for a few
minutes before they ported here from Oz.
Jas listened to her interviews. Nothing else to do in this body,
especially when she wasn't in charge of it. When the interviewers started
asking the same questions again and again, Jas tuned out.
She worked on rewriting her spells list. She noticed a time lag whenever
she spoke with her secretary. Someone was listening. Bureau 13, her
demons, the Princess. Perhaps all of them.
Let them listen.
She also examined the spells that opened a rip. Her understanding was
that rips opened between equivalent places on world maps. April City on
Earth Prime and high plain on the Red world. Bridgewater Triangle here
and a gravel wasteland on Red Prime. Diamond Hill, and its equivalent.
But the Red Witch had ported out at Lake Champlain and arrived here. The
Greens had ported in from someplace. It seemed unlikely that they had
assembled at their equivalent to Lake Champlain. The Hive had ported in
from wherever, also. It seemed.
Teleporting? Could you jump from thin spot to thin spot? Could you open a
rip anyplace?
It should obey speed-of-light limitations. Was there a measurable delay
at the rip? Jas checked the recordings on her specs.
Yes, there were delays. Each of the rips she'd traveled through had an
associated time delay. Fifteen milliseconds for green-lit rips, thirty-
five milliseconds for yellow-lit rips. Plus or minus five milliseconds.
Adding 2600 km ... no measurable difference. FTL? Maybe not. There was a
ten millisecond window of uncertainty. Just large enough to account for
signal lag across 2600 kilometers.
FTL? That implied time travel. Could Earth Prime synch with itself across
time? That would explain some legends. She mused aloud. "I need precision
equipment."
That woke her interviewers. They asked her to explain.
"Reviewing the data from each of the rips. My specs aren't precise enough
to answer basic questions about the physics."
"What are you looking at?"
"How long does it take to travel a rip? Can I contact Team Five?"
"No data transfers in or out. Not until we validate your claims."
"What do you need to validate - that my Hive connections are dormant?
Right. That's important. Can I order pizza, though?" Jas asked. "And
Shaker rice. I would kill for some Shaker rice and maker meat. I've been
hunting and gathering for a month. I'm hungry. Mind if I lay down
someplace? I've been living on cat naps."
"Please don't leave your cubicle."
"Does this seat recline?"
It did not.
Jas slept on the floor.
