Maggie let the last word drop, not finishing the line of the song. It was
a deliberate choice on her part, and always seemed to draw the audience
into the final guitar solo of "Guitar Witch." It was a slightly angsty
piece, and Maggie felt it might be a little too adolescent, but it fit
right in with the crowds that she played to.
It was a good song to finish the set with, and she looked around the
small bar where she and the other members of her band were playing. It
was almost time for summer vacation, and the few months that the band had
played together had seemed like a brief instant. It had seemed almost
dreamlike, how easy everything had become for her. Ever since she and
Mallory...
The thought of Mallory caused her to look over into the audience. Mallory
was sitting near the front, accompanied by her boyfriend. She assumed
that tonight was the night that she was planning to break up with him,
since for the past few months she hadn't been seeing him as much as she
used to. And then of course there was the OTHER thing...
Maggie smiled over at Sherrie, who was merely basking in the scattered
cheers of the audience. It agreed with her, this success. She seemed less
angry, more willing to forgive. Of course that could have been just
Maggie's imagination, since she still had an ashtray mouth.
She gave her final bows, and began to pack up, along with the rest of the
band. She no longer needed to lug her amplifier everywhere, since most of
the places she now played had an actual sound system.
"So, you coming back to the house?" Sherrie asked, her arm around Seth.
The two of them had hooked up only about a month after the band had got
together. Seth's slightly nerdish behavior was an interesting
counterpoint to Sherrie, and they complemented each other well.
"Naah, gotta see..." Maggie nodded her head towards the table that
Mallory sat at. "I think tonight's the night."
"Oooh, drama. We're fucking outta here," Sherrie laughed, dragging Seth
by his arm towards the exit. Maggie watched them go, then, slinging her
guitar, moved towards the table where her friend sat. She politely
rebuffed the various members of the audience who wanted to talk to her,
using the standard "I'dlovetobutI'mkindabusyrightnow" excuse.
"Hey Witch." Mallory's face was rather detached, as she looked up at
Maggie. "I uhm, need to talk to you."
"Yeah?" Maggie grinned, sliding herself into the seat across from Mallory
and her boyfriend. They were holding hands, she noted.
"It's kinda... Well, first off you know Sam, right?" She motioned towards
the smiling man with a WASU t-shirt on. He wasn't bad looking at all, she
noted with some slight pleasure.
"Hey Sam." She smiled at the man, who looked far too confident. Something
was wrong.
"Look Maggie, I like you." Mallory took a deep breath before she
continued. "As a friend."
"A... what? Wait a second, I thought..." Maggie turned to look at Sam,
then back at Mallory. This wasn't right. This was supposed to be the part
where Mallory broke up with him!
"It was fun! Really, I just..." Mallory began, her fingers interlacing
with her boyfriend. "I didn't think you'd get so serious about it."
"Serious? I love you, Mallory, I told you that!" Maggie gasped out.
"I know, and that's why... That's why I wanted Sam here. I'm not ready
for that yet." Mallory explained, her grip on Sam's hand tightening. "I'm
not ready for a commitment, and you sure as hell aren't. Maggie, I know I
was your first, but you can't just fall in love with me for that."
Seventeen. There it was again. She was in love, and knew she was in love,
but that age factor made others believe that she was just fooling
herself.
"Hey Witch, I'm not mad at you either." Sam's voice, a soft pleasant
baritone, cut in. "I mean Mallory and I had an understanding, so it's not
like she was cheating on me. "
Maggie didn't know what to say. She felt like a block of ice was sitting
on her chest, crushing her heart. She had fallen for Mallory, big time,
complete with sappy poetry and the desire to see grandkids.
"I still want to be friends. I mean, we've had a lot of fun." Sam grew an
embarrassed blush at that point, and Maggie realized that Mallory had
probably filled him in on details.
"Just not..." Maggie asked, knowing what the answer was, but wanting to
hear it from Mallory.
"No. I'm with Sam. I'm transferring to Wazoo next semester. Ok?" Mallory
looked at Maggie with a slightly regretful expression on her face.
"Ok." Maggie sighed. It wasn't ok, but she would have to make it that
way. It hurt. It hurt like being tossed out of her fianc?e?s parents home
one and a half subjective years ago. She stood to leave.
"You sure you're... Witch? Maggie?" Mallory's voice came to Maggie's
ears, but she didn't turn around. She left the small bar where she was
playing, yanking the "Under twenty-one" wristband off at the door, and
throwing it to the ground.
What did it mean? Why had so many things gone right, to fall apart
completely at the very end?
Instead of walking back to her dorm room, she walked across the campus,
towards the small, well-maintained arboretum. The trees were dark, the
moon the only light in the area, save the small reflected light from some
of the streetlights.
She wanted to be alone. She did not know why, but alone seemed the best,
only option at the time.
A light gust of wind blew through, rustling the new leaves that many of
the trees bore at the time. She inhaled deeply, the scents of the trees a
calming sensation to her frazzled nerves. She moved between the trees,
her feet making soft imprints in the soil.
"You're not as entertaining as I hoped."
The voice was there, the pastiche that she had heard twice before. Over
the months she had paid little thought to the spirit, whatever it was,
that had caused this. Now, she spun, making out the now familiar vague
shapes.
"I'm happy to disappoint you," Maggie smiled, her eyes squinting at the
form, with it's many shapes and faces coming forth once again. "Now leave
me the fuck alone. I'm done with you."
"Oh, but I'm not done with you." The pinched features of a man came
forward again, before melding into that familiar coyote shape, the one
that she most identified with this thing. "I have another chance to offer
you."
"No." Her voice was unsure, but more firm.
"I was a bit unfair on the change." The monkey jabber, the ape with a
crown. "I want to offer you the same chance as before, but nothing
changed."
"Nothing changed." To be a male again. James...
The small part of her mind pleaded with her to accept. He wanted to be
himself again. She thought over the last year, the danger, the heartache.
She ached to feel that people were safe again, that the world was not
looking to take advantage of her.
"So much easier to be a man in this world." The face of a snake came
forth. "So much so, that I think you deserve another chance."
Maggie thought again for a long moment. Yes, it was hard. There was no
doubting that. She had fought for everything, and that, she realized, had
been the difference. It was the struggle that made the winning all the
sweeter.
"Fuck you." She turned, trudging away. The spirit did not follow her,
there was merely a haunting laugh that echoed through the small forest.
She wondered for a moment if she had done the right thing. She could have
had it all back. Then she thought of her mother, her sister. She thought
about Mallory. Even through the pain, she knew that she had made the
right choice.
