Of all of the reasons not to get into a sorority, James had to
admit that death was a pretty good one.
James sat in a dorm room. It was her new room now, still lacking
all the little touches that made it home, but hers. It had been a pain
and a half dragging all of her stuff from the truck which the sorority
had graciously offered to let James use, up a flight of stairs to an
elevator, then down the hall to her new room. The dorm itself was
known as "the tower." It was female only, complete with a card key
lockout and a chaperone at the front desk. James had recalled that
while she had been inside this place exactly once before. It was for a
class project on her last run through, and she had been chaperoned by
two people, not counting the girl whose room they were working in.
Altogether, security was tight, as in nobody could get in without
knowing winks.
James looked about the room while she reflected on the last week.
It had started off great, with a nice dinner at the Kappa house. James
had taken an instant liking to the girls at the house, since they
didn't fall into any stereotypes that she had previously held. It was a
collection of individuals, like any group. There had been a few she
could have done without, but altogether, James had been looking forward
to spending the school year with them
The feeling had seemed to be mutual. Several of the older girls
had looked at James as a little sister. Despite her young age, they had
made her feel welcome. So many new faces, and plenty of other girls to
talk to. James had never really realized how little she had socialized
in her previous life, until she went through this. Conversation,
dinners, house tours. It had all been a whirlwind of experience,
culminating every night with James returning to the Kappa house to
sleep. She hadn't planned it that way, expecting to spend each night at
a different house, as many of the other girls were doing. She had made
some very good acquaintances, that she knew that if she gave it time
could develop into friendship.
James had felt attraction to the other girls. On a mental level,
she found herself practically drooling each time one of the girls
inadvertently displayed some skin, or brushed against James in a manner
that was meant to be friendly. Keeping those feelings hidden had been a
definite challenge, especially when one of the sisters had asked an
opinion on the fraternal streaking tradition. James had wanted to
explain that she found it not the least bit attractive or cute, but
then had relented slightly when she had observed the strong lines of
some of the frat boy's bodies in the photo albums. That had shook James
somewhat, considering her memories.
Then it had happened. James had said that she was thinking about
pledging Kappa. The announcement met no surprise with the sisters, who
took the news with great acclimation. The next day was the final pledge
acceptances, and James called it a night early instead of going to a
party, since she had mingled at several of the parties the night
before. Those had been interesting, considering that they had been held
at frat houses. However, the fraternity members who had been present
had not made any passes at James, or even talked to her much. It had
been a relief, since that had been the last thing she wanted to deal
with at this time.
The next morning, James had been called into a separate room by
the house mother. Quietly and in no uncertain terms, James was informed
of what had happened the previous night. Apparently one of the eighteen
year old Tau pledges had had a lot to drink at the Delta house. A lot
to drink. So much in fact, that she had died in the ambulance on the
way to the hospital. Several other pledges at the party had been in
quite bad shape as well, resulting in a very nasty black eye to the
campus sororities.
There was really no way that the sorority could accept a sixteen
year old girl under those circumstances. There was obviously going to
be an investigation into the campus Greeks, and the Kappa house
couldn't afford the hint of impropriety.
The house mother was apologetic, but firm. She informed James
that the house had voted to accept her, but that under the present
circumstances, there really was no way that she could pledge. That was
when they offered to take her stuff over to the dorms.
James continued to unpack as she thought bitter thoughts. She had
done everything right this time too! She had schmoozed, flattered. She
had done everything she could to make the sisters accept her.
"And then that little idiot has to go and drink herself to
death." James spoke quietly, as she plugged her guitar into the wall.
The Resident Assistant had arrived early to college as well, for
girls in James' situation. The hall wasn't empty, several rooms filled
with the sororities rejects. There had been quite a few younger girls
moving in today, since the incident had prompted a purge of many of the
younger members of the pledge class.
Angrily, James began playing a punk riff. Hard and fast was the
emphasis. She glanced out the window as she did so, noting the empty
cement clearing between the tower and the hall she would have to go to
for meals. It wasn't too far a walk, but it would get cold this winter.
Her mother had been understanding over the phone, vacillating
between concern and grief at the incident. Fortunately, she hadn't
insisted on James returning home, and had made all of the arrangements
for the dorms over the phone. Elaine had been disappointed as well,
regarding the decision as "total bullshit, sorry mom!"
A knock on the door of the room broke James recollection. She
dropped her guitar on her bed, and took three steps to the door. She
glanced through the peephole, noting a slim girl on the opposite side
of the door, before opening it.
"Yeah?" James blurted angrily. She really wasn't in the mood to
talk right now.
"Uh, was that you playing?" The girl asked, with a oblivious
smile on her face. James' eyes wandered over the girl, noting the slim
body encased in shorts and a tank top. Red hair, not too much up top,
nice blue eyes.
Slowly and calmly, James changed her expression of anger into one
of amiability.
"Yeah, I play. Name's Maggie." James pushed the door open wider,
revealing the suitcases and boxes piled in the center of the room.
"Just moved in today."
"Hi. I'm Mallory." James smiled at that. With that milky white,
freckled complexion, of course her name had to be English. "That's
kinda cool. I just moved in too, so I'm just seeing who's on the hall."
"Well, uh, you're the first person I've met." James tried to keep
her eyes from wandering down to Mallory's small chest. Memories of how
uncomfortable Randall had made her feel ran through her head, and she
concentrated on looking the girl directly in the eyes.
"You play really well." Mallory said, pointing to the guitar that
lay on James' bed. "Are you in a band?"
"Uh, no." James said, looking up and down the hallway. "Hey, uh,
you want to come in?"
"Sure! I already finished unpacking so maybe I can help you."
Mallory offered as James ushered her into the room.
"Just a few boxes of stuff." James said, pulling one open with
her hands. She pulled a novel out and handed it to Mallory.
"You've got a lot of books," Mallory commented as the two girls
began to fill the small bookshelf with James' books.
"Well, I read a lot."
"Hey, uh Maggie, don't mean to be rude or anything, but weren't
you going to be pledging Kappa?" Mallory asked as they finished with
the box.
"How'd you know that?" James asked, as she began to fill the
dresser with clothes from one of her suitcases.
"I saw you at the house every time I was visiting it."
"Oh, you were doing rush too?"
"Yeah, really sucks about that stupid Tau chick." Mallory
groaned. "The house I was pledging said that they were being really
careful about appearances."
The conversation continued, the two girls working carefully as
they complained about the bad luck that they were dealing with. James
liked Mallory. She was exactly the type that James would have gone for
as a man. Fun, intelligent, and helpful. When they had completed
unpacking, James noted that the room looked almost like a home.
"You need to decorate a little. Didn't you bring any posters or
anything?" Mallory asked, noting the exact same thing that James had.
"Not really. I kinda expected..." James let the comment linger in
the air.
"Yah, me too. Hey, you want to grab dinner?" Mallory asked,
changing the subject.
"Sure." James fished in her pocket for her meal card. "All set."
The two headed for the elevators at the end of the hall. James
couldn't help but look at Mallory's shapely rear as she led the way.
There was some definite attraction to her on a level that wasn't just
friendly.
The first week of classes came soon enough. While sitting through
the tedium of English 101 wasn't ideal, it was necessary. One of James'
biggest mistakes during her college career had been not attending
class. Crammed in a lecture hall with a hundred other students, it was
easy to recall why she had skipped. The masters student teaching the
class didn't want to be there. The students would rather be out doing
something else.
Blessedly, sitting through an hour was much easier than it had
been when she had mentally been sixteen. There were plenty of beautiful
women to fantasize about...
James had come to grips with that. Despite now being a woman, all
of her sexual fantasies still revolved around taking a beautiful girl
to bed. Not that she had done anything about her fantasies. James still
didn't feel comfortable with her body, and the weird mixed signals it
kept giving her. She would occasionally find her vision drifting to a
male in the class, before she would forcefully drag her gaze back to
either the teacher or one of the little hotties in the front row. She
didn't want to be a straight woman, or even a bisexual one for that
matter. If she had to be a woman, she would be a lesbian, and that was
just fine by her.
The class ended, and James grabbed her notes, stuffing them into
her battered backpack. She grabbed her jacket off the seat next to her
and headed towards the door. Despite her mother's insistence, she had
taken her leather jacket to school and still wore it constantly. It was
a pleasant reminder of her old life.
What was her next class? James glanced at her schedule, which she
had not yet memorized. Physics. It was only one building over, and she
had plenty of time to get there. James smirked as she remembered how
she had deliberately avoided "Hard" classes as a youngster. At least
Physics had the virtue of being new to her, as opposed to many of the
other choices on the science requirement.
"Excuse me?" A voice at her shoulder asked. James turned to see a
youngish looking dark-haired man wearing a flannel shirt. Damn Nirvana.
Half of the student population was looking like a lumberjack, while she
had deliberately stuck to her old style of dress. It tended to make her
stand out a bit.
"Yeah?" James asked, looking directly into the eyes of the man.
She had found that staring men in the eye tended to be slightly
intimidating if it was carried off with enough confidence.
The student ran his fingers through his hair, nervously, before
speaking.
"Hi, I'm uh, Tom."
"Hi. What do you want?" James really wasn't in the mood for small
talk. She had found that an aggressive tone and straightforward style
had tended to cut down on the amount of boys trying to hit on her.
"I just wanted to ask your name." Tom asked, shrugging his
shoulders.
"You can ask." James replied, before walking off. She didn't like
shutting down guys that hard, but she had found it got them off her
back. She had lost track of the number of men who had tried to turn
innocent conversations into discussions of bedroom behavior in the past
week. Was college just a big dating pool to these assholes?
"Hey, that wasn't nice." Tom's voice came from her left, and she
turned her head to note that he was following her.
"I'm not nice." James stated. "Now leave me alone."
"At least give me your name." Tom tried again, a look of pleading
on his face.
"Fuck off."
The comment got through, and Tom walked away, a look of anger on
his face. James felt a twinge of guilt. The guy very well could have
just been trying to start up an innocent conversation. From the way he
had looked at her, that wasn't likely, however. Right now, that wasn't
why James was coming to college. Shrugging, she walked to her next
class.
At the end of the day, James returned to the tower. She rode the
elevator to her hall, and was about to open her door when she noted the
sock tied around the handle and a pillow and blanket on the floor.
James groaned, realizing that her roommate had decided to exercise
roomie exclusion.
It was funny really. James' roommate was a sophomore named
Patricia. She was a walking stereotype of a college coed, complete with
the huge collection of college t-shirts and boyfriends. With her long
blonde hair and dynamite figure, Patricia (never Pat, never Peggy,
never Patty) was everything that the local farm boys found
irresistible. She hadn't declared a major yet, blah blah blah. James
hated her on sight. The unwritten rule of dorm rooms was that if
your roommate had a sock on the door, you went and slept somewhere
else. James had only exercised that once in her entire college career
as a guy. From the quiet sounds of gasping behind the door, Patricia
was heavily exercising it.
James rolled her eyes, trying to think what to do. It was only
six thirty, and she had already eaten. Several of the other girls in
the hall often left their doors open, in the hopes that somebody
passing by might stop in for a conversation.
Smiling softly, James wandered down to the corner of the hall and
turned it, finding Mallory's door wide open with music playing. She
looked inside, to see Mallory lying back on her bed, with a book
propped open. James knocked softly, and Mallory looked up to smile at
her.
"Hey, Maggie! How was class?" James and Mallory had spent a lot
of time together during the last few weeks. Although James had not
acted on her feelings, she had truly enjoyed the time that they had
spent. Mallory was a lot more fun than Patricia, and had the good
fortune not to be assigned a roommate. How she had managed that, James
had no idea.
"It was cool. Hey, uh, you want to do something?" James tried.
She really didn't want to spend the rest of the night bored out of her
mind.
"Nah, thanks tho." Mallory lifted her book. "First fucking week
and the prof wants to give us a quiz."
"Ouch." James sighed. "Good luck with that."
"Thanks. What's up with you?"
"Nothing much. Patricia's got one of her boyfriends over."
"Again? This is like the third time!"
"Yeah, in two weeks. I'm thinking about complaining to the RA."
"You probably should. She's not supposed to be fucking guys in
your room."
"I don't want to narc on her though." James might not like
Patricia, but having men in the room was supposedly an offense that
could get you thrown out.
"Hey, do you like sleeping in the hall?"
"Not really. I think I'm gonna go catch some tube." The end of
the hall had a communal television that was usually not in use. Many of
the girls had their own sets, so there was little need.
"Well, if Patty doesn't take the sock off your door before the
morning, I'm gonna complain. I don't like seeing my friends on the
floor."
"I put in for a roomie transfer. It's cool."
"Don't be a doormat, Maggie! It's your room too." Mallory had sat
up and was no longer reading the book.
"I know, I know. I just.." I just don't want to deal with the
fact that she's having sex with men in my room, James finished the
thought to herself. "...I don't want to deal with the drama."
"Hey, you want to deal with this, right now?" Mallory smiled
softly as she looked at James.
"I don't want to rat on her."
"You aren't. I am." Mallory stood, and James felt her gaze run
over her body unconsciously. It was almost magnetic how Mallory's body
attracted her. She's a friend, dammit, James reminded herself. Don't
ruin it by trying to fuck your friend. For crying out loud, you don't
have anything you can do with her anyway.
The final thought brought back that last aborted self-exploration
in the shower. It had been almost a month since then, and James had
fought every desire to repeat the experience. It wasn't easy,
especially during the sorority rush, and the communal showers here in
the dorms, but she had done it. The thought of Mallory touching her
like that was downright frightening. The same could not be said for how
James felt about the thought of touching her.
James followed Mallory around the outside hall to a small door
with a dry erase board on it. The Board had "In" written on it in nice
big letters, and Mallory wasted no time rapping her knuckles on the
door. After a few moments, the face of the RA appeared, looking far too
tired, too early.
"Yes, What is it?" The woman asked. She was older than most of
the students here, which of course was one of the main reasons she had
been made an RA.
"Maggie's roommate is screwing a guy in their room." Mallory said
the accusation with a grin and a upward lilt to her voice.
"Do you really want me to do something about it?" The RA asked
with a tired expression. It was obviously not something that she wanted
to deal with.
"Well, if you don't want to, can you hurry up Maggie's room
change?" Mallory asked, surprising James with her agile mind.
"Please?" James asked, thinking about how nice it would be to get
away from the constant discussions of boyfriends.
"I have to wait until they match her with another girl." The
woman explained again, moving to close the door.
"How bout my room?" Mallory suddenly suggested.
"Huh?" James was suddenly struck by an image of being that close
to Mallory on a regular basis, watching her dress and undress. It would
make the friendship very hard to keep platonic. "Maybe that's not such
a good idea, Mallory."
"If you want to do that I can move you tonight." The RA said,
looking to her left. "I can just switch the open room so the person
who's coming in late moves in with Patricia." "Great! Maggie, give
her your key!" Mallory said, looking at James expectantly.
She was right, it was an ideal solution. James just worried. She
knew that the fastest way to get someone to hate you was to move in
with them. She liked Mallory, and really hoped that they wouldn't end
up trying to kill each other.
James passed over her key, quickly taking the one from the RA,
who nodded, then shut her door, seeming glad to be done with the whole
mess.
"So, we're off to move you." Mallory laughed, tearing off down
the hall.
"Wait! Not NOW!" James shouted after Mallory, chasing her as she
dodged past another resident who had entered the hallway.
Mallory had too much of a head start, and banged rapidly on the
door of James' former room.
"Go away!" The muffled shout of Patricia from within was followed
by faint masculine snort of amusement.
"Mallory, we can do this later!" James tugged on her arm, trying
to get her to move away from the door. "I can do it tomorrow after
class."
"No, because then we have to wait until after class tomorrow. I
want to get this done!" Mallory banged again on the door and did not
let up until she heard a scrabbling at the door. She waited a moment,
and then Patricia's tousled head appeared.
"What?" Patricia growled. From behind her they could hear another
person dressing rapidly.
"I'm moving." James answered, wishing that Patricia would just
open the door so she could move her stuff.
"Can you come back later?" Patricia sighed, looking back over her
shoulder at something.
"Yeah, sure but..." James began before being interrupted by
Mallory.
"Wrong. No way, because I have to study, and Maggie has homework.
Plus, you aren't doing anything too important in there."
Patricia sighed, then with a final look back over her shoulder,
swung the door open. James was rather shocked at what he saw. It wasn't
the guy that made her uncomfortable, since he was wearing clothes and
looking a tad embarrassed. It wasn't the fact that both of them were
obviously still sexually aroused. The problem was the beds. James noted
quite angrily that Patricia's bed was still perfectly made up as it
always was. The other bed in the room was in shambles. Obviously
someone had been having quite a large amount of sex on it very
recently. James' bed.
James didn't say anything. The male in the room tried to smile
and be friendly, but James ignored him as she picked up her guitar.
Time to move. The bitch had been fucking on her bed! Had she done it
before? James stormed from the room, possessions in hand. She rapidly
returned to the open door of Mallory's room and dumped her stuff on the
unoccupied bed.
The rest of the move went swiftly. Mallory took a few minutes to
convince several of her acquaintances on the hall, of which she had
many, to assist in moving James' stuff. The entire process took about
half an hour with the help, and the man in the room spent the entire
time staring at Patricia and the other girls, and whispering things to
Patricia that made her snicker. When it was done, James felt no remorse
whatsoever about slamming the door behind her.
"That was kinda gross." Mallory sighed, as she watched James
begin to sort out the pile of stuff on the bed and floor.
"My bed. That's what really pisses me off." James growled,
sliding a book into it's new position.
"You wanna make some rules?" Mallory asked, lying back on her bed
again.
"Sure, mind if I close the door?" James asked.
"Nah, go ahead."
James closed the door with a quiet clunk. She liked the view from
this room much better than the other, since there was no dorm across
from this side.
"Okay, no lockouts without notice." Mallory laughed, commenting
on the recent events.
"Fine. You have to let me practice at least one hour a day on my
guitar." James said, gesturing towards her pride and joy.
"Can I be here when you do?" Mallory grinned, brushing her red
hair back from her pillow.
"If you like." James smiled back, folding a shirt.
"Not on my bed?" Mallory asked.
"Huh?" James wasn't sure what Mallory was asking.
"You promise not to do any guys on my bed." Mallory explained,
pointing in the direction of James' former room.
"No problem. That's not going to happen." James said quickly.
Hell, she wasn't going to fuck any guys, period, so location wasn't a
problem.
"And vice versa." Mallory laughed. "I promise. That was gross."
James continued to arrange her possessions as they talked. They
hammered out various small points in their roommate relationship,
enough so that James felt much better about this new experience.
Finally, things were starting to come together.
