I was distracted that day when I sat down for lunch in the high school
cafeteria, but not too distracted to recognize trouble when I saw it.
"Bitch alert," I said, nodding across the room behind my two friends.
"Brace for impact."
The two brothers who were about my only friends in the hell that was the
DeSoto High school, craned their heads over their shoulders for a look,
then turned back to me with mournful expressions.
"Maybe she's coming over to pick on some other poor bastard," said Dave.
"You kidding?" asked Cody. "Who else but her favorite punching bag here
would she condescend to talk to on this side of the room?"
"Gee, thanks," I muttered.
Allison materialized at the table, flanked by two of her air-head drones.
"Yeah?" I asked.
"Mike, I just want you to pass on a message to your whore. The next time
you get together for a little vomit inducing grind, tell her me and the
girls had a meeting, and we've decided that Julia just doesn't have what
it takes to be part of the squad, especially since she hasn't bothered to
show up for practice for the last two days. Got that, pretty boy?"
"Don't call her a whore, you bitch," I growled.
"Oooh, Touchy. Where has Julia been, anyway? Off getting an abortion in
some clinic after you got her pregnant with your deformed monster? Or has
she left town in shame now that you've shacked up with that new little
faggot, what's his name, Jerry?"
"I don't know," I mumbled.
And the humiliating thing was I didn't know. This was the third day that
Julia hadn't attended school, I hadn't been able to reach her on her cell
or email, and both times I'd dropped by her house it had been empty. And
she was right about there being something off with Jerry. He'd shown up
two days ago, new kid, and right off he wanted to be my best friend or
something. That was weird as all get out by itself - pretty much no one
wanted to be friends with a geek like me except another geek, especially
not a handsome muscular fellow like Jerry, but Jerry was more than weird.
He tried to accompany me everywhere, had even followed me when I dropped
by Julia's house, and he seemed to know all about my life. Like, intimate
stuff, stuff I'd told almost no one. And he didn't act like a guy should.
He was always touching and laughing oddly and...
Well, all in all I'd come to a conclusion, the same one that Allison had
obviously come to. Not that I had anything against that kind of thing. I
just didn't want to associate with it, was all. I'd been planning on
telling him off today, but thankfully he hadn't shown up.
Allison was flouncing off followed by her entourage, not having waited for
a reply to her last crack, and I returned to my platter of the days
tasteless franken-food.
"What is up with Julia, anyway, man?" asked Dave. "First you take your
life in your hands to be with her, then she vanishes?"
"Beats the hell out of me," I said. "I guess I'll drop by her place again
later today, after the 'rents get packed up. Thank god they're letting me
stay with your family for the trip. I don't think I could take another
year at Aunt Livia's. You've probably saved my life."
"No problem," said Dave.
Julia, Julia, where's my Julia Set. "Julia Set" was my pet name for her.
From the fractal, you know. Not that I'd dared to call her that yet. I
didn't want to give her an excuse to break it off sooner than she was
planning. Just being able to be around a pretty thing like her was
intoxicating. I'd had a crush on her from the first day I saw her, had
mournfully watched her entanglements with the knuckle dragging
footballers, had dreamed about her and masturbated to her imagined form.
And then one day the unthinkable happened. She asked me to go out with
her.
I'd known it was some kind of joke, of course, a put on or put down that
would end with me stripped naked and left along side the road at the edge
of town, or something equally humiliating. There was no way a goddess like
her could be interested in a geek like me.
But it was Julia. No matter how bad it was going to get, just having her
talk to me was worth it.
And it hadn't been bad. It had been wonderful. She had asked me to ask her
out to a movie, and we sat together, and she held my hand, and she talked
to me, and she had even laughed and agreed when I untied my tongue enough
to make some comments on the film. And at the end she kissed me, and let
me walk her home. And the next day she had talked to me again, and I'd sat
in passenger seat of the old blue pickup her dad let her drive on the way
home, and she invited me up to her room and showed me her photography
collection. And I'd been able to talk to her, to tell her about myself, my
likes and dislikes, my dreams. I'd made an ass out of myself I'm sure, but
she hadn't pointed that out.
And it had gone on like that for a week - before she disappeared. Now the
other shoe was getting ready to drop.
You see, I'd come to the conclusion that the whole thing must be a
complicated "Screw you" to her boyfriend on the football team, Jack. Just
before she picked up with me something major had happened between them,
that much was obvious, and now she had some kind of plan to get back at
him. Not that I was complaining, of course. No matter how awful it was
going to turn out, it was worth it, just like it was worth the daily
barely avoided beatings from Jack and his friends, and would probably be
worth it when my luck ran out and he finally caught me. Because I loved
her.
I'd always been good at running and dodging, and amazingly I'd been good
enough to avoid the footballers. Couldn't last, of course, but I was damn
proud to have lasted as long as I had. And Dave and his brother Cody had
proved their loyalty beyond a doubt, sticking with me through it. Cody
still had the black eye and bruises on his face from when Jack had caught
him a day ago. Thank god a teacher had broken it up before it got really
ugly.
Lunch ended and the school day dragged to a close, boredom punctuated with
spikes of brief panic as we kept out of sight of Jack and his knuckle
draggers. This was Friday, so I would have the weekend with no parents to
look into whatever Julia was planning. Maybe I could even give her a hand.
She had sure fulfilled *my* dream for the last couple weeks.
First I had to get home in one piece, though. Easier said than done.
"What dya think?" asked Dave. "Old man Hutchison's back yard, the direct
way, or around through Piedmont?"
I surveyed the high school parking lot from my place near the door. It was
filled with the usual crowd of kids filing out to their cars and queuing
up for the bus. The football team's unofficial club vehicle, Jack's big
red pickup, was already missing. Ominous.
"Hutchison's back yard," I said. "That way we'll be covered most of the
way. Just the last street in the open."
"Okay, then. Let's do it."
We darted out the door in single file and jogged across the parking lot
and onto the green lawn that bordered it. The sun was hot, and the air was
full of the smell of freshly cut grass and the sound of buzzing
grasshoppers. Beyond the expanse of lawn was a high board fence that
marked the beginning the ranked houses of the Lakeview subdivision, almost
identical white and tan homes with small yards set on narrow winding elm
tree shaded streets. I lived about a half mile in as the crow flies, and
the two brothers lived three houses down from mine on the same street.
We came to the fence and I boosted the brothers up one at a time, first
Cody then Dave, then slid my fingers and toes into the knotholes and
cracks and pulled myself to the top as the first fusillade of barking rang
out.
This route home was named after the owner of the first house; sleepy,
grouchy old Hutchison. He'd probably never even notice our invasions of
his back yard, if it wasn't for his two dogs. Foxy and Pug, a big blond
golden retriever and a small brown poodle, respectively. Their favorite
diversion on a school day was to chase after me and my friends as we made
our way home.
When I got to the top of the fence I could see that Cody and Dave were
already halfway across the yard, pursued as usual by the dogs, barking fit
to raise the dead, big deep woofs from Foxy and sharp high yips from Pug,
their tongues hanging out and their tails wagging furiously. They knew us
of old, and bore us no ill will.
I dropped to the ground and trotted across the yard, the sun hitting me
with an almost physical impact as I came out of the shade of the peach
tree that grew at the corner of the yard. Ahead my friends scaled the
further fence and the two dogs wheeled and charged back towards me, long
streamers of drool trailing from the corners of the golden retriever's
mouth as he came, the little poodle tripping over his own paws his effort
to keep up. They separated to let me through and turned to follow me
again, barking deliriously.
At the far end of the yard I parted the tomato plants, the cloying green
scent of the vines almost overpowering in the heat, and took a tight grip
on the splintery crossbeams of the old board fence. Unlike the outer wall,
these boards were split and slightly sagging, a condition likely not help
by frequent climbing.
Faintly, through the barking of the dogs, I could hear the rusty squawk of
the screen door opening, and I glanced back over my shoulder as I pulled
myself up. Old man Hutchison was standing braced against the door frame,
one shaky, gnarled hand holding his cane out towards me like a gun.
"I told you to stay the hell out of here!" he yelled. "D'ya hear me? Stay
the hell out!"
"Sorry, Mister Hutchison," I called as I swung one leg over the top of the
fence, feeling the entire structure shift under me. "Kind of an
emergency."
I got the other leg over and dropped between my friends, who were hunched
down in the shade behind the fence. Dave was grinning at me, while Cody
crouched over on all fours, breathing in great gasps. He always tired
quickly. Asthma, you know.
The fence wobbled and creaked before stilling. It looked like it was in a
bit different position. Hutchison was cursing his dogs into silence.
I returned Dave's grin. "We better give this route a rest. Either that or
help old man Hutchison shore up his fence."
He nodded. "Right. It's not going to be safe much longer anyway. Those
bastards have probably seen us use it a couple times by now."
They probably had. I helped Cody up. He was ashen faced and gasping.
"You alright, man?"
Dave reached into Cody's pocket and pulled out the aspirator, then pressed
it into his hand.
"Take a suck on this before you croak," he said.
Cody brought it to his mouth and triggered it. We waited a minute while
his airways cleared. This yard belonged to some workman whom we had never
seen.
Finally Cody nodded, put the aspirator away and grinned weakly. "Sorry
bout that. I'm ready."
We took the rest of the way slower. Cody's attacks tended to come close
together and there was no sense triggering another for no reason.
When we came to the last cross street before our drive, we emerged from
the bushes and walked along the sidewalk, checking cautiously for
approaching cars. No one. It was probably safe. Jack and his gang were
probably drinking, or bullying some other helpless kid, or whatever other
disgusting things they did with their free time.
We rounded the bend onto our drive, and came to and abrupt stop. There,
parked beside the curb, gently idling, was Jack's big red pickup. Beside
it stood Jack himself, with one of his buddies, grinning broadly.
"Hi there, you little fuckers," he said.
"Shit!" I said. "Turn back."
We turned to run, and two of the footballers stepped out of the bushes
behind us. One of them was Todd. He was a great big guy, sloping forehead,
and mean as a rabid dog. We'd always believed he was retarded.
"Other way!" I yelled.
Todd and the other one grabbed for me, and I jumped back and ran, Dave and
Cody right beside me. Jack's grin vanished into bared teeth lunged
forward. I dogged left, Dave dodged right, and we were by him and running
for our lives. You might think running from the football team would be
rather pointless, but ours was never a very good football team. Big on
brawn, short on brains and speed.
We had gone nearly a hundred feet, and my house and safety was only four
hundred feet away, when I heard a pain filled yell behind me.
I looked back over my shoulder. The jocks had come to a stop in a cluster
around Jack, who was holding Cody in a headlock with one arm twisted
painfully behind his back. It was he who had yelled.
"God damn it!" I heard, and realized Dave was beside me.
Cody screamed softly as Jack twisted his arm further back. The scream was
soft, I knew, because he was having trouble getting enough air into his
lungs.
"Come back here, motherfucker!" yelled Jack. "Or I'll twist this little
pricks arm right off and stuff it down his throat!"
"Let him go, damn you!" screamed Dave, taking a step towards them, his
fists clenched. I could see he was about to run forward and attack them in
blind desperation.
And his reaction was appropriate. His brother could very well die of an
asthma attack right here.
"Stop," I said coldly, laying a hand on shoulder. "Run to my house, tell
my parents what's happening, emphasize that his asthma attack is life
threatening. Those bastards want me, they'll probably stop picking on him
long enough to beat me up. Go!"
"You hear me you little fucker?" yelled Jack, pulling Cody's arm up even
further, eliciting another thin screech.
"I hear you," I yelled back, walking slowly forward. "I'm coming."
Dave looked at me for a moment, his face white with his terror for his
brother. Then he turned and ran.
When I was about ten feet away from the knot of jocks Todd lunged for me.
I dodged under the retard's grab and came up in front of Jack.
"Here I am," I said. "Let him go. Or are you not man enough to beat me up
yourself? Guna let one of your boyfriends do it for you?"
I was about to die, most likely. I'd be in the hospital for a month if I
survived. So much for Julia. She wouldn't even look at the bloody lump
that would be all that was left of me. So much for summer vacation,
climbing trees, playing baseball with my buddies, late nights of gaming in
my room. Hell, so much for walking ever again, probably. I was screwed.
Couldn't let Cody die for my idiot crush on Julia, though. Couldn't.
I saw fury flow through Jack's eyes at my taunt. He threw Cody to the side
like a dummy, and out of the corner of my eye I saw him land in a sprawl
on the lawn as Jack swung at me. I started to dodge and felt unyielding
claws clamp down on my arms. Todd was holding me for Jack. Vaguely I heard
a motor revving in the distance. It sounded familiar.
Pain exploded along the side of my face and jaw as Jack's fist connected.
I could taste salty blood from where my teeth had cut into my cheek. He
grinned and swung again, connecting with my other cheek, making my head
ring like a bell and bright points of light explode in front of my vision.
Then suddenly there was a squeal of brakes as something struck me from
behind, pushing me bodily forward into Jack. We went down in a sprawl.
Something heavy was on top of me, I could barely breath for the weight. I
thrashed weakly. What the hell had happened?
A male voice was calling my name frantically. "Mike! Mike!"
The weight eased as someone rolled the body, Todd's I guessed, off of me,
then grasped me under the shoulders and dragged my backwards, off the
sidewalk out onto the street.
I blinked and shook my head, trying to recover from the blows Jack had
dealt me.
"Mike, talk to me! Are you alright?" The scene came into focus. Jerry was
crouching over me, looking down at me with deep concern and cradling my
head tenderly in his arms. Oh, crap, I thought. Or, well, maybe not crap.
Better having Jerry acting weird than be beaten to death by Jack.
"I fine, I think," I said. I slowly rose to a sitting position and looked
around. Julia's old blue pickup was idling beside me, the driver's door
open. That must have been what pushed me forward. Julia must have run into
Todd when she saw what was happening.
But where was Julia? All I saw was Jerry and the jocks. And Cody. He had
made it to his feet and was limping up the street, respirator in hand.
Good, he'd probably be all right.
Jerry was driving Julia's pickup? What the hell? Did he know her?
Time for that later. The jocks were shaking off their shock and scrambling
to their feet. I felt Jerry slip an arm around my shoulders and lift me
up. I was dizzy, and leaned on him, grateful for the support, whatever the
source.
Jack stepped out of the knot of cursing jocks and advanced threateningly.
"What the fuck do you think you're doing, motherfucker!" he screamed.
Jerry made a motion with his hands, and I straightened up to give him the
freedom to act. Glancing at him, I noticed with a sense of unreality that
he had Julia's purse slung over one shoulder. He was rooting in it, for
all the world the way I'd seen Julia do when she was looking for
something, and for a moment the resemblance was uncanny. I shook my aching
head slowly and swallowed a mouthful of blood. My teeth felt strange under
my tongue. The punches must have knocked them out of place.
Jerry withdrew two black and yellow pistol like objects from Julia's purse
and pointed them at Jack, one in each hand. Jack stopped abruptly. I
recognized the objects, of course. Those were Julia's tasers. She had
shown them to me and let me handle them. Military issue M26 tasers, a gift
from her generally absent father. Range, about thirty-five feet. Laser
sights.
Jack looked down at the small red points of laser light dancing across his
shirt. "What the fuck?"
"Back up, Jack, unless you want to spend the next five minutes writhing in
agony on the ground," said Jerry. He glanced at me. "Get in the truck, if
you can."
I started to nod, then stopped at the rush of dizziness it brought on and
turned toward the pickup. It took me two tries to scramble up into the
cab. Jerry followed right behind me, still holding the tasers on Jack.
"Don't think this is over, you fucking faggot," said Jack. "What the hell
are you, Julia's new fuck toy? I'll get both of you. And Julia. I'll do
her good. That bitch won't give anyone no lip after I'm through with her."
Jerry slammed the door and reversed in a half circle, then roared off down
the street. I supposed I should wonder where he was taking me, but all I
really felt like doing was laying half slumped across the seat, waiting
for my head to stop pounding.
Jerry glanced at me as he stopped for the intersection. "You really
alright? If you can just hold on, I've got something at home that will fix
you right up, better than any hospital. Just keep it together till then."
"I'm fine," I mumbled, only half listening. "Just give me a minute to get
myself back together."
