eyes. My heart sank. I had to get her to stop being afraid of me, to put

She turned away. "Anyway, don't change," she said as she rummaged in the
closet. "You look perfect just the way you are."
Sighing, I found a purse in the closet and put my wallet in it, along
with a few of the syringes I had stolen from the hospital. Just in case.
Then I stuffed the hospital bag with the gun and syringes in it under the
bed, out of sight. I'd have to find a better place to store things like
that in the future, I thought.
Fourty minutes later I followed Julia through the crowd in the food court
at the John Bros mall, a pizza in my hands, as she navigated her way to
an unoccupied table. Every male eye seemed to be on me, ogling my breasts

Julia pulled the pizza across and lifted a out a slice. We had
established that I could heal obesity on the ride over here, and she'd
seemed quite gleeful when she ordered the pizza. I probably would have
found it more funny, if the sales person hadn't spent the whole time

"Oh come on, Mike. It's not that all bad. You're the center of attention.
You wield power over all these people. Or the men, at any rate. Ask one
to do something, and he'll do it, just to please you."
"Please me?" I said, taking a slice. "Please me? To screw me, you mean!
It's disgusting."
She grinned around her mouthful and I shot another glance at the middle
aged man. He was looking at his plate studiously, and now his wife was
the one staring at me. Staring disapprovingly. I rolled my eyes and gave
a guilty shrug, but that didn't seem to soften her displeasure. And now
her daughter was looking over to see what all the interest was. I averted
my eyes quickly.
I started to eat my slice of pizza, and felt a hand give my butt a
squeeze. I turned indignantly, and saw two muscle bound guys walking
away. One of them glanced back and said, "Lookin good there, babe."
It took all my self control not to scream obscenities after the bastard.
I felt him flash before my mind's eye, complete in every detail, fading
as he walked away, just waiting for me to push my fury into. This was how
it happened with Julia, I realized. The restraint from physical action,
the freedom to concentrate - that ass was moments away from being turned
into a smear in the floor.
I hastily shifted my attention, concentrating on the table in front of
me. I felt it, both under my hand, and in my mind. And I could feel the
table vibrating through my hands, as it shifted back and forth a few
inches as though the floor were unstable.
Fortunately Julia didn't notice, or if she did, put it down to the press
of the crowd. She was eating a second slice, and grinning at my
discomfort. "Give em hell, Mike."
"I'd like to give him a knuckle sandwich, that's what I'd like to give
him," I growled.
"Now, now," she said, waving one finger at me. "Mustn't do that. It's not
ladylike." And she broke down in peals of laughter. I fixed her with an
ice cold stare. She seemed to have lost her fear of me now that we were
among other people. I was starting to doubt the wisdom of my wish to put
her at her ease.
"But seriously," she said, regaining control over herself. "Haven't you
ever looked at a woman? I was sure I noticed you making eyes at me at
school."
The question took me aback. Was I really like these men?
"That's different," I said. "I never grabbed you or anything."
"No, but you wanted to."
I shook my head and she looked at me, head cocked at one side, wicked

I suppressed a smile, shook my head innocently. "Me? Hardly. I was just -

"Uh huh."
There was a large crowd gathered around TV's. The TV display at the
electronics store was one of the nicest spots in the mall, and it
commonly had a crowd, though usually a smaller one. The owner of the
store always played the sports and news channels, and when something
interesting was on, I and my friends would loaf around watching and
eating something from the food court. This time of night they would be
tuned to the Nifty News Fifty broadcast, and I thought I could guess what
had drawn the crowd.
"I want to see this," I said, and pulled Julia into the press by her
hand. It took me a few minutes of pushing and shoving to make it to the
front where I could see, and I accumulated a fair number of 'accidental'
gropes in the process. Presumably I was related to some kind of fruit
which needed vigorous squeezing to ascertain ripeness.
People did get out of my way more willingly now, though. Of course if I
hadn't made myself shorter than Julia I wouldn't need to get to the front
in order to see. Talk about being an idiot. It was my fault for thinking

The news ticker said, 'Healing Miracle at Kaiser Hospital baffles
doctors, scientists.'
"And back to you, Monica."
"Thanks, Tom. For those of you just tuning in, I'm Monica Lewinsky with
Nifty News Fifty bringing you the latest reports on what some are calling
the 'Kaiser Miracle.' Earlier today every patient in the Kaiser hospital
in the city of Broadfield, Southern California, was healed of all
physical ailments, including old age. I know how this will sound to most
of our viewers, but what I am saying appears to be completely accurate;
these people, some quite elderly and in extremely poor health, are now
young men and women in peak physical condition.
'Doctors are at a loss to explain the strange phenomena, and authorities
have been able to offer nothing beyond the fact that all those affected
appear completely healthy and that they are investigating further.'
I raised my eyebrows at Julia and smiled. "What do you think, darling?
Good work?"
She put her arms around me and hugged me tightly, gave me a kiss on the
lips. I thrilled at the sensation of her breasts pressing into mine.
"It's amazing! I know you said, but it wasn't quite real until -"
"Shhhhhh!" hissed a woman standing behind me. I heard her mutter under
her breath, 'Damn lesbians.'
Julia looked at the floor, blushing prettily, and I put one arm around

"Thanks lady," I said in a polite tone of voice. There was a disgusted
snort behind me.
A man was on the screen now. The ticker identified him as Professor of
Astrobiology, Gregory Fairchild of the University of California,
Berkeley. He was sitting in a chair in a comfortable looking wood paneled
room and speaking in a slow, precise, weighty voice.
'Yes, Monica, this is one of the ways I might conceive of first contact
with extraterrestrials. Not an invasion, or the popular conception of a
giant ship hanging in the skies, but something more intimate, a sort of
offering of good faith.'
I grinned as he proceeded to expound at length. Yes, there were aliens in
the mix, but their contribution was an accident, if I guessed right.
Monica was back. It looked like details were rather thin on the ground if
Nifty Fifty was turning to random talking heads for filler. 'And for an
opposing view we have Nathan Samuels on the line from Los Angelus. Nathan
runs a popular web site on flying saucers and 'reptilian' aliens' - the
web address scrolled by in the ticker - 'and has allegedly been abducted
multiple times and subjected to bizarre experiments. Nathan?'
A high breathy voice with odd register break points. 'Yes? Monica, can
you hear me?'
'We can hear you Nathan. You are currently on the air. Do you have any
comments on the events in Broadfield?'
'Yes I do, Monica.' The words brought to my mind images of someone pale
and overweight, poised in front of their computer with one hand on the
keyboard and the other... well, you know.
'And this is very, very important that you understand. These aliens are
not our benefactors. Quite the opposite in fact.'
'Our benefactors?' Why did that sound so.... Oh, right. He was quoting
Dr. Breen's line from Half Life 2. Even had the same vocal inflection.
'This healing is due to the fact that these people have been secretly
impregnated with Reptilian eggs. This is the start of invasion. They will
look and act like normal people, but actually the developing Reptilian
embryo will control their every action via the implants in their spinal
columns. Soon they will start to take over the govern -'
He was abruptly cut off. Monica's smile was wider and stiffer than usual,
not reaching her eyes, which were looking angrily at something or someone
off camera.
'Yes,' she continued smoothly after a beat's pause. Several of the people
around me chuckled. 'A very interesting viewpoint indeed. Yes. Um, next
we have Stone Johnson from the James Randi Educational Foundation.
Stone?'
The image shifted to a grainy feed of an older man with a moustache
sitting in front of the camera. A webcam, I suspected.
'Hello Monica,' he said.
'Hi Stone, and welcome to Nifty News Fifty. Can you give us your opinion
on the alleged miracle healings in Broadfield?'
'Thank you, Monica, and hello to everyone watching.' The man's voice was
so dry I was surprised that I couldn't see little puffs of dust coming
out of his mouth with each word.
'I'm a spokesman for the James Randi Educational Foundation, which is
dedicated to debunking paranormal claims and charlatans, and encouraging
rational thought. The Foundation was founded in 1996 by magician and
skeptic James Randi, after the great success of his Million Dollar
Challenge in weeding - '
'Yes, yes,' interrupted Monica. 'But regarding the healings?'
'I was getting to that. Yes. Well, as anyone with *my* level of
experience in these things can tell, this is obviously a fraud. Someone
is attempting to deceive -'
She interrupted again. 'But Stone, I think we can agree that this is well
beyond the realm of unsupported claims. The authorities have the whole
facility under quarantine and have issued statements that this is very
real, and -'
'That's a mistake a lot of people make, Monica. That assumption that just
because people in an official capacity have been deceived that it must be
true. It's not. If you knew the list of things which intelligence
agencies and scientists thought were 'very real,' you would be aghast,
simply aghast. Why, did you know that the government had something called
'Project Stargate' - an intelligence program, not the TV show - where
they believed that they had psychics who could 'remote view' things in
other countries, like for instance Russia, and that this continued for
twenty-three years; that they were actually putting men at risk based on
these fantasies? It really shows you why they call 'military
intelligence' an oxymoron -'
'So you're saying it's all a hoax?'
'That's right, Monica.' I noticed that the people being interviewed
seemed to say her name an awful lot. I guessed it made them feel
important to be talking to someone as important as Monica Lewinsky. 'It's
all completely impossible. If you'll -'
They continued to argue back and forth for a while, then Monica
interviewed a Jehovah's Witness minister who thought it was a portent of
the rapture (like there was anything he didn't think was a portent of the
rapture) and a new age Baptist priest who thought it was the
reincarnation of Christ. I was about to follow Julia, who was tugging on
my arm, back out through the crowd, when someone interesting came on.
It was an interview with an old woman, who was the wife of one of the
patients in the hospital, and it was mostly made up of her thinking God
for what had happened and hoping that she would get to talk to her
husband soon, but there was one thing more. She was obviously scared of
what would happen when her husband came home a young man. What would he
think of her, old and shriveled up and two steps from the grave?
I smacked my forehead with the palm of my hand.
"What is it?" asked Julia.
I shook my head ruefully. "Consequences, more consequences, unintended
consequences. I can't stop with just the people in the hospital, not
without causing pain to people like that woman. I have to do her, too.
Her and people like her."
"Come on, Mike. You haven't hurt that old woman. You heard her. Her
husband probably would have died in a few weeks. You've made things
better, not worse."
"But don't you see? How can I do one and not the other? How can I ever
stop with someone, without doing everyone connected to them?"
"Quiet," she shushed me. "This isn't the place for it. Come on."
I turned back to the TV's. The camera was now showing a shaky view of the
cordon around the hospital, with Monica narrating. Searchlights stabbed
at the darkness, as men in uniform walked past.
'We're seeing a high turnout from the various letter agencies, the FBI
and NSA and so on.' The camera swung around and zoomed in on a pale man
in a black suit getting out of a limousine. Guards surrounded him as he
walked toward the cordon. He glanced towards the camera and gestured. A
trio of guards detached from his entourage and started over.
"Come one," said Julia, tugging on my arm again. "Let's go."
That was the first time I ever saw Tom Craslin. If I'd known then what he
was, or if I'd been intelligent enough to add precognition to the talents
I'd gotten from the MAU, I wouldn't have docilely followed Julia out of
the mall and driven off with her to her stupid night club. I would have
dropped everything, gone out to that hospital, broken through the cordon,
and I would have found something sharp, an ice pick, say, and I would
have jammed it into that fucking bastard's skull and turned his brain
into mush before he could get a chance to hurt anyone else.
