I stood on the sidewalk in front of my house, waving after my Mom and

better. If the device could make the kind of changes I had seen it make, a
smart person should be able to figure out how to improve the human form
beyond the flawed efforts of Darwin. "Intelligent design" would finally be
true, at least of me.
But first things first. Julia's questing hand was exciting me mentally,
the only way I could be excited now. I had to get my manhood back.
To an outsider we would have looked like the perfect couple, two young
people standing there in the evening light. They would probably also have
thought me incredibly lucky to have snagged such a beauty, despite my
relative lack of good looks.
What an onlooker would not be able to see, unless he happened to be
related to Clark Kent, was that the only things hanging between my legs
were Julia's hand, and empty air. And unless he could read minds, he would
be unaware that the only reason this beautiful young woman was interested
in me was because I lacked my male genitals.
Gee, looks really can be deceiving.
I knew I should be rushing for Julia's house, hell bent on regaining my
masculinity, but now that the way was clear, the truth is I was
momentarily afraid to try, afraid of failure, afraid of losing Julia.
So I spent a few moments standing there while Julia rubbed my empty
crotch, enjoying attention of a kind that she would probably never give me
as a male. I put my arms around her, and she melted against me with a
little "Oh!" as I brought my lips down and kissed her deeply. There was
none of the stirring between my legs I'd always imagined should accompany

When I released her she looked at me for a few seconds before saying
anything. "I suppose you want to go get your man parts back now, Mike?"
"Yes." An edge crept into my voice as I spoke. "I would like to be able to
do more than look and touch, unable to feel anything physical."
She looked at me with hurt in her eyes, then climbed into her pickup. I
went around to the passenger side, and we pulled out.
There was a minute of silence, the only sound the revving of the engine
and the faint squealing of the power steering belt as we passed through
first one and then another stop sign. Finally she glanced over at me and
asked, "You really don't like it at all? I mean, I find it hard to believe
a teenage boy would imagine himself without genitals. Didn't you have any
kind of urge, even unconscious, to be this way when you were programing
the machine?"
I felt a surge of anger at the suggestion. She was actually trying to
imply that this was intentional, that I'd done this to myself on purpose?
"There was no 'urge,'" I said harshly, crossing my legs. A little voice
qualified that statement. In some ways I did like it, slightly. I liked
how I was able to cross my legs. I liked the way it felt to walk. But only
because it was a novelty. "It's just the way I think when I imagine a male
body."
She lapsed into silence again, leaving me to my thoughts. Which turned to
why I thought of males like that. I certainly didn't filter out that part
when I thought of women.
I was silent a while longer before I finally said, "I think it comes from
my Dad. He told me once, when I was young, to try to avoid any sort sexual
feelings or thoughts about other males. He said he had nothing against
people like that, but he thought it wasn't good for a someone if they
could avoid it. I guess ever since then I've sort of filtered my thinking
for anything that could be construed like that. Kind of a homophobia."
Julia nodded, but didn't say anything. I wondered what she was thinking.
Was she ashamed that she had taken pleasure from my frustration? Thinking
of dumping me now that she knew that I wasn't into her kink? Mad at the
way I had spoken?
Well, she had just opened the door for me with her question. "What's up
with you, then," I asked. "Why do you like men who don't have genitals?"
She winced, but didn't say anything. When I'd about come to the conclusion
she wasn't going to answer, she finally spoke. "It's not men without
genitals so much, Mike, although I do like that. It's sexual contact
without any masculine parts to get in the way. Or to get in me. I don't
like the idea of a man inside me. I don't know how you'll feel about this
if you're homophobic, but I think I'm kind of a lesbian."
Hmm. Well, I had to give her points for being honest about it. I grinned
at her reassuringly. "As you probably know, most men find lesbians
exciting. I'm the same way. Except," my grin turned wicked, "for not being
a man at the moment."
She giggled. "You devil!" She made a grab at my crotch and I swatted her
hand away.
"I aim to please, Ma'am," I said in a false John Wayne accent. She laughed
outright at that, a wonderful sound.
"So," I said when the laughter had died down. "Is that why you went with
me after Jack got to be too much for you? I'm not exactly a girl, but
closer?"
"Hey! That's not fair. I like you, Mike. And I've known you had a crush on
me for ages. Yes, there's some of that to it, but I also really like you."
We had arrived at her house. It was dark out, and all of the houses on the
street except Julia's had lights on. Three houses down, and across the
street there was the sounds of music and laughter and squealing children.
Probably a BBQ from the smell. My stomach growled.
"Cmon Julia. Lets make sure the MAU's still here."
She shook her head and killed the engine, got out. "I don't see why
anything would go wrong with it. It's worked perfectly for three days
now."
"Uh-huh," I said. "All kinds of things could happen. Batteries. The aliens
could show up and reclaim their misplaced property, keeping the Prime
Directive intact and all that. Hell, your father might make one of his
monthly visits and cart it off to his cronies in the government. You've
never told me what he did."
She shrugged mysteriously as she unlocked the front door. Something
secret, I'd decided.
As soon as she got the door open I dashed upstairs, barely pausing to
switch on the lights. It was still there, looking just the same as before,
and when I touched the crystal the screen lit up to show my present body,
naked, also just as before.
Whoo! I breathed a sigh of relief and set about adding my missing parts
back onto the picture. I resisted the urge to make them larger or better
in any way. Right now I just wanted them back the way I remembered. And...
I had to pee. Not something I wanted to try without my little buddy.
Julia had come in and was looking over my shoulder. When I had finished
programing it and was about to command the door to open she cleared he
throat.
"You know, Mike, there's a way you could be with me and so that I'd like
it. Instead of putting that thing back on yourself, you could become
female. Pick a girl you like. Any girl. I've seen your Xena collection,
wondered about it. If you like lesbians, I understand why you have it. You
could turn into a character from the show, Xena or something. Then we

I turned, looked at her. It wasn't a bad idea. Not Xena, I found the idea

probably the only way it would ever happen. And that was something that

But right now I wanted some time with the genitals I'd been born with.
Time to reassure myself I hadn't lost them forever, to reassure myself I
was still the Mike I'd been this morning, not some sexual deviant. That I
wasn't one of those people Dad had nothing against, but didn't want his
only child, his son, to turn into.
"If you still want to, Julia, I'll do that later. But I need to have those
for a while -" I jabbed a finger at the representation of my missing parts
on the screen - "or I'll go crazy."
She raised her hands. "Of course, Mike. I just wanted you to consider it."
I willed the MAU door open, removed my fingers from the crystal.
"Tell you what," said Julia. "I'll go down to the kitchen, fix something
to eat, and you can get reacquainted with your penis. Okay?"
"Good idea," I said. "I'm starving."
And I stepped into the MAU.
