The First Kiss of Dawn
Year 1 A.S. Day 228
Day 273 of Jenny's Pregnancy
8:30 A.M.
One hundred and sixty pounds. That was about how much her ruck had
weighed after she had crammed gear, twenty-four MRE's, an anti-tank
mine, a thousand rounds for her SAW and an M-72 anti-tank rocket into it
when she climbed onto a UH-60 Blackhawk and they sent her against the
Iraqi army.
One hundred and fifty pounds was what she had used as her average set
when she worked out at the gym when she was James. One hundred and
fifty-four pounds was what Dr. Waverly had told her she weighed during
her last visit yesterday. When she first shifted into Sonya's body she
had only weighed ninety-seven pounds. She still weighed seventy-five
pounds less than she did when she was a man, but it felt so much heavier
to her now.
Grandma had gone with her and Derek to her appointment. He didn't go
into Java Jolts now unless he had to. Derek had hired Whitney just after
the restrictions imposed during the crackdown on Brother Paul's cult
were relaxed. Whitney was working out all right so far. Mindy had taken
her in hand and she was turning into a decent barista. It was still odd
to hear her Puerto Rican flavored Spanish coming from the mouth of a
forty-two year old Caucasian woman, but it was no stranger than anything
else you would hear from someone who lived in the aftermath of the Great
Shift either.
This was Whitney's first real job. She had graduated from high school
and was taking a gap year before going to college. She seemed to be
adjusted now, but Jenny knew too well that what you saw outside really
told you nothing about what was going on inside of someone; just like
before the Shift. It was just more obvious now. Jenny told Derek that he
didn't need to hire someone else yet. Grandma was here and even if most
of the family had returned back home, they were still constantly coming
down to spend time with them. Apparently they had worked out a rotating
schedule so that someone was always there with her besides grandma and
Derek. The last three days it had been George and before that it was
Kira and Dianne again.
She knew saying that to her husband was just her talking though. He had
already firmly told her that Mindy could take care of running things
while he was gone. He also made it crystal clear to her that he was
going nowhere and she would just have to accept that until she had
recovered from having the twins he was going to be right here beside
her.
Dr. Waverly told her that normally she would have expressed some concern
over her weight gain if this was a single birth, but she was still
within the accepted limits of a woman her size who was having twins. She
did express some concern over how much difficulty that Jenny was having
getting around now and had confined her to either her bed or on the
living room couch. It didn't matter which one it was as long as she was
off of her feet.
Jenny was glad to comply with that order. She would have been doing it
even if Dr. Waverly hadn't told her to do so. Her belly had swollen now
to limits that she didn't think were possible for a tiny woman like
herself to contain and not just split open when she managed to get
herself onto her feet. On top of all of the physical discomfort, she had
spent the last week or better in a haze of anxiety as well. It wasn't
over anything specific, but it did come into sharp focus for brief times
over one point or another. It depended on what held her attention at the
moment.
Mostly it was the rapid approach of her due date. Every moment of the
last two days she had been living in a state of suspension that she just
wanted to be over. She was so tired of being pregnant and she was so
scared of what she was going to have to go through to end it. Just
waiting for the first real pain to hit her and let her know that it was
really time to do this was becoming torture for her. Each time she felt
contractions start she wondered if it was real or if it was another
attack of Braxton-Hicks contractions like those that had already sent
her to the hospital five or six times so far. The only real thing that
was a relief was that she was breathing much easier now.

Year 1 A.S. Day 237
Day 282 of Jenny's Pregnancy
9:00 A.M.
The house was so full of people. The entire family was down here now. It
was four days before Thanksgiving and two days past her due date.
Grandma Amelia had told her and Derek that they were already planning on
being here unless he had some strong objection to it. Derek had told her
that since she had bothered to ask such a question in the first place
maybe she really hadn't accepted that Derek and Jenny were married now.
When she crooked her eyebrows at him for saying that he started laughing
at her. He said that he didn't expect anything else from his new in-laws
and if she hadn't mentioned it he was already going to insist they do
so.
Trisha and Arnie would be coming as well in a couple of days and so
would Mindy. Jenny had already asked Belinda and Kyle if they could
come, but she had merely said that she was going to be with her family
and they would try to stop by. She had called Dr. Min as well but she
had declined. She said that she already had been invited to another
dinner with Mika Nakamura. Jenny told her that she understood and if she
could she was welcome to come by afterward. She had wanted to talk to
Mika about having J.L. with them, but Mika still had some reservations
about him making an excursion outside of the controlled environment of
the institute just yet.
Mom and dad were going over the shopping list in the kitchen. They were
talking loud enough that she could hear them clearly from where she was
resting on the couch. They yelled a question to her through the open
doorway and she told them that what they were talking about sounded good
to her.
Last night after everyone had arrived and gotten settled in she had
asked Derek while they were lying in bed together if he was really all
right with being swamped by her family this way. Derek looked at her in
the shadows of their room and told her that she didn't need to even ask
him about that. His parents had virtually cut everyone other than his
grandparents out of their lives and he didn't really know what a family
holiday like this could be like until after Aunt Dina had taken him in.
He told her that when Aunt Dina was alive she never missed an
opportunity to do something like this. Every holiday that called for
some kind of gathering would see the house filled with everyone that
meant something to her. After she had died he had gone to some
gatherings with those who had come here before, but it wasn't the same.
Dina had been the heart of those gatherings and without her it wasn't
the same. After that he had drifted into a state of isolation to a
degree. Vicki hadn't really been interested in doing things like that
the same way he wished he could again. Her idea of that was for them to
be immersed in whatever the church had arranged and Mindy's family
didn't really do things like that as much.
He told her that he wanted this with her. He wanted her family, their
family around them for this, especially when the family was going to be
larger any day now. He put her hand under his on her belly. When he said
that to her she could feel one of the twins move beneath her skin as if
in agreement with what he had to say. Even after he went to sleep she
lay there in his arms and tried to think if she would have felt any
differently if it was Sonya lying here with her. She didn't think she
would have and that gave her a deep feeling of satisfaction as she went
to sleep.

10:30 A.M.
Derek was out with Kira and George picking up a turkey and a ham. Since
there were so many people here, it was going to have to be a full
spread. Mattie and Jake were not in here right now, but they drifted in
to check on her between playing whatever game they were playing on their
phones. Amelia and Dianne were bustling around the house cleaning it up;
Jenny thought she heard them take some wash out to hang on the line a
few minutes ago. She felt something wet start to soil her underwear and
started to lever herself off of the couch. She just knew she was going
to piss herself again. She felt the rush of the fluid moving out of her
and soaking her inner thighs and understood that it this time it was
much more than her losing control of her bladder.
Danny heard Jenny call for him to come right now and he put down the
list he and Sam were working on. They figured that they would have to
start getting everything started sometime tomorrow morning if they were
going to have everything ready for when they wanted start eating. They
wanted to make a real effort to show Derek how they truly felt about him
now that he and Jenny were married. He walked into the living room and
saw her struggling to get up. He thought at first that she had another
accident until he saw how much she had saturated the couch cushion.
"I think I ruined the couch mom," she said to him.
Danny called to Sam to come here right away and as she came through the
door and saw them she gave a low whistle at the sight and said that she
would go outside and get Amelia right now.
Danny helped her into the toilet and yelled for Jake to get his aunt
some dry clothes. When Jake popped his head into the bathroom to ask
why, he told him that she was going to have the twins now. Jake's eyes
goggled out before they got him to understand that it was just starting
and the babies weren't going to be here right this second. He dashed to
Jenny's bedroom and then came back a moment later to ask her where what
she needed was kept.
After Danny had helped her get cleaned up and changed they helped her to
the car. Amelia told her that she had already called George and Kira and
told them to bring Derek to the hospital as soon as they could come.
Jenny felt her first strong labor pain hit her; she let out a groan from
the pain. Danny was in the back seat with her and started timing it.
Dianne was following them to the hospital with Mattie and Jake in the
car behind them.
She felt a few more strong pangs hit her on the way there before she was
wheeled into the hospital and up to maternity. Danny was with her while
they were changing her into a hospital gown. One of the nurses asked her
if he was the father and she shook her head no. Danny told her that he
was her mother and that Jenny herself was the father. The nurse's eyes
got a little big hearing that, but not as big as Danny thought they
would. This nurse had, in all likelihood already seen some situations
like this pass through the doors here.
They had her hooked up to the fetal monitor and were starting to track
her contractions when Sam came in and told them that Derek, Kira and
George had just came in. Dr. Waverly had phoned to assure them that she
was on her way as well. Jenny said she was thirsty and scowled when
Danny handed her a cup of ice chips. She took them anyway and turned
back to watching the door while she sucked on them and waited for Derek
to get here.

10:45 P.M.
Derek sat in the waiting room with George and Kira. It had already been
twelve hours since Jenny had started labor. At first he had stayed with
her from the moment he got there. When they suggested that it would help
speed things along after ten hours he had walked with her each time that
she found it in herself to get out of the hospital bed and walk the
floor. The last time had been over an hour ago and once she had gotten
back into the bed they had given her an epidural.
The family had been taking turns cycling in and out while Jenny
continued inexorably toward the moment that would end her ordeal. He had
overheard Kira and Dianne talking quietly together earlier. Dianne had
just come from her watch and was telling Kira about it. Kira was visibly
shaken by it as well. They held each other's hands while they talked.
Derek was thinking that it was just as much what Jenny was going through
right now in Kira's mind as it was the reality that she was looking at
her own future when she was in there as well.
Dianne was trying to reassure her wife, but Derek was pretty sure that
it wasn't working so much.
"I've always known my entire life that I would have to face this as a
woman," she said to her. "I knew that when I did have children that it
would be what I had to do. When you and I started trying to have a baby
before the Shift I had a good idea of what it would end up as and I
didn't really know if I was ready for it."
"I didn't expect for it to be like this though," she said. "My sisters
didn't spend this long in labor when they had their kids and I thought
when I had ours it would be about the same. But this isn't like that."
Kira asked her how she thought Jenny was holding up and Dianne told her
that she thought she was hanging in there so far. They had just moved
her to the delivery room and she had just really gotten started now.
Derek heard Kira ask her if she thought that Jenny would be able to
handle what was happening to her after it was over with. He heard Dianne
answer her that she didn't see how she could be the same after this.
There was no way that she could go through labor and give birth and hold
onto even a scrap of what masculine identity she had been able to retain
after going through this.
"She'll be a woman after this Kira," she said. "No matter how she tries
to hang on to it there won't be any way for her to be anything else.
This is the most female thing any woman can do in her life and anything
male left over inside of her from before this will be scoured away. She
won't be able to keep it from happening."
He saw the look on Kira's face when she said that and he could tell that
she was also thinking of herself when she heard Dianne say that about
Jenny. He turned away. He needed to go in there soon, but in addition to
how anxious he felt about what was going on now, he still felt some
guilt over what he had done too.
Danny finally came out and told him that it was time for him to go in
with her. Jenny was his wife and regardless of whatever misplaced guilt
he had about what happened before she needed him in there with her now.
It didn't take long to convince him to set aside the guilt dogging him
and go in and let his wife break his hand while she held it. She watched
him go in and went over to sit with the rest of the family to wait.

Year 1 A.S. Day 239
3:00 A.M.
Jenny lay in the bed exhausted. She had never felt any pain in her life
like what she had just finished enduring. Every muscle in her body was
literally screaming at her from the effort that she had just undergone.
She could barely feel the pad that was lodged in her underwear to arrest
the leaking from her abused vagina now that it was over.
It had been a long sixteen hours and just when she thought she would
have to die for it to be over Dr. Waverly told her to give a hard push
and she felt her daughter finally moving out of her. It wasn't over yet,
but just reaching that point was some degree of relief for her. She felt
the waves of pain from the next contractions hit her after Amelia took
her great-granddaughter from the doctor's hands and handed her to the
neonatal nurse.
Her son was born less than ten minutes later and she had just enough
energy left after they told her that both of them were perfectly fine to
tell Derek that if he pointed his dick anywhere near her anytime soon
that she would rip it off of him. Derek heard the staff in the delivery
room give a chuckle as they wheeled her out of there. As they took her
to recovery Amelia told him that every woman in that room has said the
same thing or something very much like it to the man she was with.
Amelia told him to go to be with her. She would go and let the rest of
the family know.

3:45 A.M.
Jenny was almost alone now. Derek was sleeping in the uncomfortable
hospital chair in the room with her. They had brought the twins in to
her and they were sleeping in the hospital cradles beside the bed. She
looked at them and saw herself and James in their faces. They were still
red and worn out from passing out of her and they moved fitfully in
their blankets with faint brief cries as they adjusted to their new
environment.
The little boy had much more hair than the girl, but both of them had
thick black hair. She named the boy Sammy Yuhua. She had been thinking
long and hard about what she should do as far as that was concerned. She
didn't have any idea which one of them would prove to be Sonya. Even so
she wanted to have her carry part of what she was with her when she
could tell them where she was.
The little girl she named Sonya Danielle. It just seemed the natural fit
to her and Derek agreed with her when they had talked about what she was
going to do when both of the twins were finally here. She had asked him
about what they should do as far as what to call the twins after he
asked her to marry him. He had insisted that she not change what her
plans were for the children. She reminded him that even if he had not
put these children inside of her that he was still going to be their
father and she felt he should have a little say in the matter.
He did agree with her about that. He agreed that he was going to be
their father when they got here, but he still felt that she had made the
right choice when she told him how she wanted to name them. She told him
then that even if she would not take his name she would give it to them
if he would let her. Derek agreed with her when she said this. He didn't
say anything to her, but her doing that meant much more to him than she
might suspect. But he could be wrong about that he thought later. Jenny
knew how he would feel as a man in this situation he reminded himself
and was even more grateful to her for doing this for him then.
Jenny looked at her belly. For the first time in months she could see
her feet under the sheet at the end of bed. For the first time she
didn't feel the same way that she had felt since she had first sensed
one of the infants inside her moving. For the first time in her female
life she was truly alone in her body. She slowly scootched up in the bed
and winced from the after effects of going through labor. She touched
both of the tiny hands of her children. One of them was Sonya, it didn't
matter which one right now because both of them were hers. She looked at
their pinched faces in the dim hospital light. Little Sonya opened her
mouth and yawned a toothless yawn while she stretched her arm. Jenny
extended her finger and felt the tiny fingers of her daughter
reflexively wrap around it and grip tight.
When the duty nurse looked in on them just as dawn was creeping through
the hospital window she was still doing that as she slept. The nurse
moved Jenny's hand back into the bed and turned off the light. She
walked quietly out of the room and left the family sleeping together for
as long as the growing dawn that was lightening the sky outside would
let them.
