She is 5'4'' very slender with long thick black hair that initially fell to mid shoulders, but has since been cut to shoulder length. She weighs about 98 lbs at the beginning of the story. She has an oval face with big dark hazel eyes and a small cupids bow mouth. She wears glasses and is nearsighted. She has small breasts barely an A cup with large prominent sensitive nipples. She has a regular length torso but her legs are short which gives a false sense that the body proportions are off. Before the shift he was a 37 year old man. He was the middle child. He was 6'4" tall. He had sandy hair starting to show some grey. He is not in peak condition but he is in good condition. He has grey eyes a sharp straight nose and thin lips. He is strong but not heavily muscled. He weighs about 225 lbs. He enlisted at 19 and served on active duty until 25. He served in IRR (Inactive Ready Reserve) until 27. He does have a minor disability for slight hearing loss/tinnitus and had suffered an injury that later mostly healed on his final jump. He studied ESL at UNC from 26 to 31. on the GI Bill. He worked in China as an ESL teacher from 32 to 37. The years in between he worked with his father at the garage his father owns. She is currently unemployed, but has enough money saved and a per diem for expenses for cooperating with this medical research. He switched in Shenzhen, China where he had worked as ESL teacher for 5 years. He attended UNC after he left the military. He served for 6 years on active duty, reaching the rank of sergeant. He is a veteran of the 82nd ABN Div and served as a parachute infantryman (paratrooper) in the Persian Gulf War and in the Panama Invasion. He is proficient in the M16A2, the M249 and the M9 Berretta. She owns the last weapon and has a concealed carry permit. In China he studied T'ai Chi after his girlfriend Sonya got him interested in it. He also was proficient in hand to hand combat from his military training including using knives and rifle/bayonet. He fishes, continues target shooting and had been in the middle of hiking the Appalachian trail with family members. He/She is a good cook and had been taught to do this by his parents. All of his siblings learned this. His/Her cooking skills are enhanced by living in China and learning to make many things from scratch. He met Feng Yuhua (Sonya Feng {pronounced fung}) in China after she graduated at 21 and started working in Shenzhen. They were together for 5 years and he was going to marry her. He loved her deeply. He had attempted to take her home with him for a visit three years before the Shift but the visa was denied. He was planning to ask her to marry him the year the Shift occurred and stay in China until he could get her permission to return with him. She finds out she is pregnant during identity verification at the embassy. At the beginning of the story she is 6 weeks pregnant when she switches with Sonya during a sexual encounter. She later finds out that she is having twins at least one of which is a girl. She thought that this idle sex wish was the trigger for the shift. She has a tremendous amount of survivor's guilt and is mostly initially dressing as Sonya would dress as a mourning/memorial for her. After an intervention with her mother she is forced to face that and begins to craft the kind of woman she will be. At this point her development begins to mirror that of a teenage girl in regard to dress, grooming, cosmetics, etc. She mostly appears to be in control and to be adjusting to the Shift, but beneath that she is terrified of losing her sense of self and becoming someone she is not. She did have to some degree a sense of traditional family roles but was not bound to them entirely. She is not religious. She had been raised with a strong male figure and had integrated that into her personality, after the Shift she is struggling to reconcile how she will become the female half of that outlook. She does not regard that as a lesser position but is completely at a loss as to how to fill that sort of role. She is also struggling with her own feelings brought on from what she experienced. She has striven to attempt to imitate her mother's role in the family to some degree after she started her romantic relationship with Derek, since that is the family template she has already internalized. She does know she is straight but has felt her sexual desire returning since the mentally let go of Sonya. As she feels increased pressure on her from this new aspect of herself initially she chooses to satisfy this need with the use of a vibrator and later by entering into a romantic relationship. She started speaking regularly with Derek when she was left alone while her mother returned to deal with a family crisis. She liked him as a friend and including him in her life as a confidant and companion. They are going out with each other, but she did not consider it in any way as romantic even though there are overtones in it that come into play. She was treating him as she would have treated a friend before the Shift and did not consider how what they are doing could be viewed as a form of courtship since it is how she would have treated the same person before the Shift. She didn't make this connection because she didn't see it as even a possibility. When Jenny does realize that she is attracted to Derek and has already fallen in love with him she moves quickly to be with him. After their first night together she stays with him for several days. This is like what happened between James and Sonya. It is a part of the female template she has adopted to guide herself. She loves him so she should just be with him. Dr. Warren speaks with her about how the women that he has loved and respected in his life have become his guide to being a woman herself. Shortly after she and Derek become a couple she is visited by Brother Paul who drugs her and places a suggestion that she keep using this drug. She believes it is a pre-natal vitamin. During Derek's absence to go to an old friend, Brother Paul and Madeline use that opportunity to get close to her and continue to drug her while using the trance state to reshape her mind. After Derek returns she moves in with him permanently and continues to spiral down into the directives that are imposed on her. With each subsequent encounter, Brother Paul and Madeline use their access to her to warp her behavior into what they view as proper female behavior. This is an experiment with using this drug as a means of influencing others and recruiting in a clandestine fashion. Jenny is a tool for Brother Paul to reclaim Derek for the Church. After he can get them both to enter the camp he plans to have Derek marry a previous girlfriend and he intends to punish Jenny by handing her over to Cody and Stephen as compensation for her beating them after she has been mind wiped. When she has completed this 'penance' she is to be married to another shifted man that he has not yet chosen and used in the church's breeding program. He has used her to begin introducing the drug into Derek already. He also intends to take her children and give them to other cursed parents to be raised separately. When Jenny is given the trigger command to take her next dose and that dose is not taken she is able to recognize clearly the things that have been done with her and reacts in rage that she initially directs at Derek. After seeing Dr. Warren she begins to make a start at undoing what has been done to her, but the status of her relationship with Derek has taken some damage and is in limbo to an extent. She is trying to determine just what that status will be now. After realizing that she may have to leave Derek to have some chance to be the kind of woman she wants to be, she speaks with a blind woman who helps her realize that does not have to be so. When she speaks with Derek and tells him everything he asks her to marry him. She agrees with some conditions. She won't take his name and their wedding will not be like her dream. She wants to use the ring she bought for Sonya and he agrees to this when she explains why. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- - Kira Greg Minton/Gregory Minton: Kira is now Jenny's sister. She is a 32 year old African-American woman. She has short curly hair. She is 5'10" and fairly fit. She is the shade of coffee with a hint of mocha. She is rather ordinary in appearance, not really out of shape or overweight. The bridge of her nose is a little wider and she has thin lips and high cheekbones (think Grace Jones) Her buttocks are larger with slightly wide hips but not overly so, she does not have a bubble butt. She does have breasts on the small side of a C cup. How Greg looked before the switch is not described. Greg Michael was 35 years old and the youngest child. He married Dianne two years ago. He works at the same bank Jenny uses. He is a loan officer and has worked there since graduating from college at 23. He fishes on weekends and owns a boat and a pop up camper that was used for family trips. He switched with a random woman 30 miles away. This woman had three children. Greg (Kira) and Dianne have not yet had children but had been trying for a baby at the time of the shift. He is a Star Trek fan, particularly of DS9. He has done cosplay at trek conventions before, usually as a redshirt. He decided that he would use Kira as a female name after his favorite female DS9 character. He was part of the family group hiking the trail with James. She is trying to maintain her marriage and loves her wife deeply. She knows that she is straight and no longer had a sexual attraction to her wife. This was a cause of deep distress to her as she is trying to hold on to their marriage but they have since resolved that issue. She initially did not know just what her personal desires are since she had done nothing more experimental than masturbation. An attempt at having lesbian sex with his wife failed and this weighed on her. She has become aroused by men several times already. After Dianne catches her looking over a man in the grocery store she surprises her by initiating and successfully having a three way sexual encounter. She finds that they are able to reconnect with each other sexually in this way. This lifts a great deal of her mental burden and she and Dianne grow even closer together as a result. She is very close with Jenny and is deeply concerned for her loss and for how she will deal with her pregnancy. She tries to help in any way she can. She also is willing to offer help to strangers and loves kids. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- - Dianne Minton: She is Greg/Kira's wife. She is a 29 year old woman. She is relatively unchanged. The woman she switched with is similar to her in body type. The woman had been a stripper and had large E implants and dyed her hair blonde. Dianne, before the switch was a natural blonde and she barely had natural D cups, more of a high C cup. The woman she switched with worked at a strip club named Ho-ho's. She didn't know this woman even though she worked in the club as a bartender in college and this was where she met Greg. This makes it a bit of a joke on Greg that Jenny finds funny. Dianne is a lawyer with a small local firm and was on the fast track to be made a partner. She does not know how to admit that she no longer has any desire for Kira because she is heterosexual. She was willing to try a lesbian encounter again and should Kira have asked her, she would try to have a sexual experience. After realizing that both she and Kira are attracted to the same type of man physically, she impulsively arranges a three way with the man they had been watching. The success of this gambit goes a long way toward restoring their ability to have a sexual relationship again. They were still together based on the strong marriage and relationship they had built, but since this they have found their relationship strengthening even more. She, like Kira feared that they may end in divorce, but now that fear has gone away. She is developing a strong female friendship with Jenny. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- - Kim Reynolds: (In the camp renamed Kim Minton, then Joshua Minton) Kim is Jenny and Kira's oldest sibling. Kim switched with her husband Jake. She is now a 39 year old man. He has not had as much of an opportunity to deal personally with how the shift affects his development because he is dealing with family issues first. He works at home with Jake as they had done before the Shift. He was not weak willed, but did tend to go along and give in rather than deal with conflict unless it was absolutely necessary. Jake used this to get his own way. They have two children Mattie and Little Jake. Their income comes mostly from speculation in the stock market so they spend most of their work time related to this. He is 6'2" with just the beginning of a beer gut. Before the switch Jake would insist that she exercise with Jake and for the time being they have kept up their training program. Kim still fills the role he filled before the switch but is starting to question a lot of things about what they should do. After Jake's actions went too far he presented him with an ultimatum to either get help or he would leave and file for divorce. Jake found a treatment program, but insisted that Kim come with him. They left the children in the care of Danny and Sam. During their entrance into the program they were both drugged. Kim has taken the name Joshua. His mind has been shaped to what the church considers to be what a man should become. He now has internalized the church's positions of women, how they should behave and the absolute superiority of men over women in an extreme patriachical view. He has been blocked from getting LJ and Mattie and during a discussion with his parents they observe him taking the drug and receiving instructions. During the strike against the organization of the Church as a whole during the re-imposition of martial law, both he and Amy are taken into protective custody and placed in a government deprogramming program. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- - Jake Reynolds: (Briefly Amy Reynolds, then Amy Minton) Jake switched with his 38 year old wife. She is not dealing with the changes at all. Jake was a very domineering man and had set that pattern very early in the relationship with Kim. Jake had strong views about traditional roles, much stronger than Kim's family had, and has used that to exercise control over the family. He did not abuse Kim but he did dominate her and the kids. This air of superiority over women that he unconsciously adopted is now in complete conflict with becoming Kim. He holds reactionary views politically and frequently spouted off. He believed that this is a terrorist attack by gay rights groups to force being homosexual on everyone. She refused to change in any way or acknowledge that she needed to. She did not wear anything that Kim possessed and insisted that Kim continue her role despite now being male. She was particularly hard on Mattie and was trying to mold his daughter into being a boy by doing so. Jake was slowly coming apart. He contacted the organization behind the idea that the Shift was caused by gay rights groups and arranged for herself and Kim to meet with them. During the interview Brother Paul used a powerful hypnotic drug to begin reshaping her mind and to rename her Amy. He ended the interview by raping Amy before sending her under the drugs influence to be remarried to Kim as a woman. Amy has returned from the camp with her mind completely reshaped according the dictates of the Church of the Blessed. She is three months pregnant and operated almost entirely on what they have created her to become. There is very little of Jake left in her personality. She is extremely submissive, has an internalized view of the inferiority of women and is directed by an extreme version of fundamentalism. The church's program has crushed her inner being completely and she will have to have professional assistance if she is to ever have even the slimmest chance to rebuild herself as a woman independent of what the church has made her into. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- - Mattie Reynolds: (Matilda) was Jenny's sixteen year old niece. She and her fraternal twin brother Little Jake were in school during the Shift. She switched with a four year old boy who was at a nearby preschool. She turned five just before school resumed. She is barely hanging on psychologically. Not only is she dealing with the changes inflicted on her (loss of age, sex, and self) she is also dealing with losing her boyfriend. His body is occupied by one of the junior coaches at school and he has not been heard from since. He is presumed dead in one of the accidents Her father is also putting pressure on her to make her be a boy and later a man as she defines it. After his father's meltdown, he and his brother are living with their grandparents. Danny has removed him from school for the time being and has entered him in a counseling program with a colleague of Dr. Warrens. Now that Jake is no longer harassing or actively blocking him, he is starting to take the first steps to recovery, but is still very fragile. During his parent's return Mattie started to relapse due to the reintroduction of the pressure from his parents, but that has started to ease since they have been taken into custody. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- - Jake Reynolds Jr.: Jenny's nephew. Jake is Mattie's 16 year old fraternal twin, often referred to as Little Jake. He switched with a 23 year old Honduran custodian. Everyone in school called him Mr. Emilio. Emilio Gutierrez was in the country illegally. He was working in the admin building in school. For him it has been somewhat exciting. His parents return has frightened him very much and he would prefer to remain with his grandparents. He had intended to try out for the football team but with the uncertainty of what is happening he has made no decisions yet. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- - Jenny Amelia Minton(nee' Stanton): She is referred to in the story as Amelia to avoid confusion but before the Shift she was Jenny. She was 73 years old, but looked in her early 60s. Jenny's grandmother. She is the woman that James's mother would have named James for. She and James's mother have had an extremely close relationship for many years. Amelia Minton's body died of heart failure during switch. It was thought initially that she was missing but that was not the case. She switched into a 19 year old intern who had a fondness for piercings and outrageous hair dye. Amelia had been putting off retirement out of a sense of devotion and not wanting to give up her profession and its place in her life. Her devotion stems from personal experience. Her father was badly burned as a tank commander in WW2 and her grandfather died of complications after surviving inhaling mustard gas as a marine in WW1. She married Lloyd Minton, a Korean War vet who had been a medic and later a doctor. They were married for 50 years and Lloyd died a few years before the shift without retiring. She has worked at the VA for most of her career but recently decided to retire mainly because of heart related reasons. She managed to keep that from the family and was planning to break the news after her retirement. At the moment she is spending a lot of time with her Grandson George helping him to adjust to his changes. Amelia is one of the first to recognize that the relationship Jenny is forming with Derek has tremendous potential to become more. She tests Derek during a visit with suggestive comments and body posture and is satisfied that he is interested only in Jenny from his response. She is encouraged by this development for Jenny but is still reserving judgment on Derek. Amelia is alarmed at the changes in both Joshua and Amy. She identifies the drug as an unknown type and advises Danny and Sam to take it to a higher level. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- - George Minton: George was a 27 year old man. George was an only child whose parents (Sam's sister) had died in a car accident when he was 14. Sam and Danny have been his surrogate parents ever since. He took the family name Minton adding it to his father's surname. George did serve as a combat engineer. He had been inspired to do so by James and by the family tradition of military service. He looked at James as an older brother and role model. He volunteered at 18 for three years and served multiple tours before mustering out and going to college. He also suffered from hearing loss and tinnitus. He had just finished college with a degree in teaching mathematics. He had just finished his first year as a high school teacher. Cousin George switched with a man in the VA. Paul Jacobs a 66 year old double amputee Vietnam vet while visiting Grandma Minton. Paul had lost both of his legs during his third tour in the area called the iron triangle. He was a ranger on a LRRP (long range recon patrol). Before the Switch George had been active. He loved to fish and often went with Greg and James. James and he would go to the shooting range as well. He had been a long distance runner and was training to run the Boston Marathon next year. Three years before James, Greg and George had started hiking the Appalachian trail in stages and had intended to resume where they left off the next time that James came back. Kira intends to encourage him to do so when he has adjusted to his situation. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Danny/Danielle Marie Minton (Maiden name not given): She had been a 57 year old woman. She is Jenny, Kira, and Kim's mother and George's aunt and foster mother. Jenny's mother was switched while visiting Sam at his business. Danny was also a nurse and met Sam through her friendship with her friend and mentor Jenny Amelia Minton who worked with her. Danny later changed jobs to work with children and was working for the school district as a nurse at the time of the Switch. They live in a rural area outside a small town. Danny has lots of time right now due to the schools being closed for the time being. He is very perceptive and see right away that Jenny is using busywork to avoid dealing with her changes and the loss of Sonya. Danny has always been the anchor in the family and has not allowed himself to walk away from that role particularly now. He felt great anger about Jake's behavior and holds little faith that this program will help her. He has not heard from Kim or Jake since they arrived to begin the program and is starting to worry. He also has noticed the attention that Derek has paid to Jenny and her reaction to it in their friendship. He has already seen things from what she has said and done that remind him of when he and her father first began. He has chosen to not say anything yet and see what develops. As Jenny and Derek's relationship has developed Danny has been very supportive of her and told her that everyone could see this step coming far sooner than she did. When Joshua and Amy return from the camp their odd and disturbing behavior sends him searching for answers. He finds out that the two of them are firmly under someone else's control and after witnessing this trance he goes to the authorities. He and Sam are nearly detained, but work out an agreement with Agent Kellerman to go free so they can get Jenny out of this danger she is in. During this confrontation martial law is re-imposed to crush the cult's capabilities and prevent their leadership or membership from escaping. Agent Matthews who accompanied him to bring back Jenny gave him a pass to leave the occupied zone and he has not yet been able to return even thought he intends to bring as many family with him to support her during this time as he can. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Sam Jacob Minton/Jacob Samuel Minton: Sam was a 57 year old man. He is Jenny, Kira, and Kim's father and George's uncle and foster father. He learned to be a mechanic while serving as a mechanic in the motor pool in the 5th Infantry Division stationed at Ft. Polk, LA. Sam is of the generation that kept problems to himself and internalized it to keep in control. A lot of Jenny's example of how to deal with things comes from him. Sam has not been overtly shaken by the changes in front of the family, but privately with Danny, Sam has revealed everything that is dogging her about it. He owns a small garage that is large enough for him to not be a mechanic if he doesn't wish to and the last few years has moved more into a management role. For the time being he has closed the business but plans to get it back open in a couple weeks. For now she is dealing with her own changes. She was completely unprepared for James's announcement and has no idea how to deal with it. For the time being Sam is letting Danny take the lead. He still loves Danny just as strongly as before and their marriage has not been weakened by the changes, but they have not had many sexual encounters since the shift and she is beginning to dread the possibility of not being able to overcome it. She did initiate resuming sexual relations with Danny and has been able to start adjusting somewhat to being the female part of her marriage by seeing what James has done even though she knows the reasons for Jenny's decisions through personal observation and speaking with Danny and Amelia. She and Danny often cook together as they have done throughout their marriage. She is very involved with helping Mattie recover since they moved in with her and Danny. Amelia and Danny are keeping him posted with the developments in Jenny's life since she does not go down there as often. When she witnesses the changes in Joshua and Amy she goes with Danny to the authorities and is told the background of the group responsible for that. Sam cared for her grandchildren Mattie and Little Jake while Danny was away to try to retrieve Jenny. She intends to leave the operation of her garage to her shop foreman and take them with Danny when he is able to get them down to her. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- - James Lloyd (J.L.) Minton: [James's body] James is currently under close supervision and care with his mental development being closely observed by Dr. Nakamura and Dr. Min. Jenny had not seen him since the embassy, but now has started having daily interaction with him as part of experiment they are in. It is believed that he is one of the fetus's inside her and that he shifted into this body. That idea was confirmed by observation of his development. He is currently mentally about twelve to fourteen months in his development. He is beginning to walk and has begun to speak in a incoherent halting way. Jenny has named him James Lloyd after his father and grandfather. The family refer to him as J.L. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Characters: Java Jolt's Derek Peterson: Derek becomes Jenny's first post-Shift friend, her lover and finally her husband. Derek is the unshifted 27 year old owner of Java Jolts, the coffee shop that is near Bob's country kitchen. He is 6' 1", in good condition although he is not as heavily built as James was. He has black hair and blue eyes. He has regular features and is fairly handsome, but not unusually so. He notices Jenny the first day that she began her participation in the government research project and they became close friends and often spent a lot of time together socially. He and Jenny often talked when she spent her free time at his coffee shop. He is attracted to her but he restrained himself from doing anything about it. Jenny began to taking him into her confidence more often and that developed into a romantic relationship. His parents had started the shop as a Christian bookstore, but after their deaths in a collision with a police officer while he was engaged in a high speed pursuit of a suspect, he was cared for initially by church members and later by his lesbian Aunt Dina. Derek does not tell anyone that his parents were coming back from meeting with a group to plan a series of bombings of abortion clinics and their doctors and employees homes. His Aunt Dina closed the bookstore and turned it into a coffee shop. He had inherited it after her death. He had been cared for by his lesbian aunt after his parent's deaths when he was eleven. The church had opposed her doing this, but were unsuccessful in blocking her from being his guardian. His parents had been members of the original church of the blessed before the Shift and he still had maintained intermittent contact to it through friends. Derek had long ago grown disgusted by fundamentalist groups like the COTB, because of their pious behavior in the walls of the church and their hateful attitudes the moment they walked out of the doors. He does not have an animus against religion in general, but he has no use for it in his life. Derek had performed every job in the coffee shop growing up and had worked there while attending USC. His sole remaining close relative, his aunt had died when he was 26 from colon cancer. She was just over 50. Derek is a supporter of many cancer related charities and groups because of this, the coffee shop always has several things posted in support. He does play baseball with a local pick up league. Derek did arrange the confrontation with Jenny as a means of getting past her guard in a way that would let him meet her. He did not intend to have them do what they did. His idea was for them to make a nuisance of themselves so that he could make them go away. Under orders from Brother Paul they escalated it. Derek does not have any real skill in cooking, since his mother was an indifferent cook at best. He is surprised at what Jenny can do in contrast to her. He has been fishing before, but nothing like the level that Kira, George and Jenny show. He does play the guitar and the bongo drums. He teaches Jenny how to play the spoons so that she can join in during their impromptu jam session after they return from fishing. His similarity to the type of character that James had been as he was is what first attracted Jenny and to him and then had her fall in love with him before she realized it. He is a little in awe of Jenny. He knows that she can physically take care of herself and would not hesitate to do what is necessary, she continues to surprise him with what he sees her do as she feels her way into becoming the woman she is and thinks privately that she, like all of the shifted, are much stronger than unshifted like him. He did restrain himself in regard to his feelings to her, but now that she has invited him into her life he has moved completely into showing her exactly how he feels about her at any time he can. He has taken a more dominant role, but that is misleading. He only allows himself to do so in areas that she has clearly indicated to him that she would accept him doing so. He was intrigued by Jenny from the beginning and placed himself at her disposal often in his goal of getting close to her. He eventually hoped that they could become much more, but was aware enough that he knows that she will have to make that decision for it to have any success. He grows quickly devoted to her seeing the strength in her that his aunt had shown him growing up. After they become sexually involved he also recognizes that he already loves her deeply. Derek also has a weakness for women who are somewhat dominant and strong, particularly if they express that through ruling the house in the somewhat traditional fashion. This is part of his early legacy from his birth parents and later from his aunt who was in control after that. It has manifested in how he responds positively to women who take that role in his life now. Since Brother Paul and Madeline have started to use their influence on Jenny he has started to question if this version of her is what he wants to be involved with even though Mindy has told him that it may be a phase of her pregnancy. Despite finding out from Dr. Warren that Jenny is responsible for giving him the church's drug, he does not hold her in any way to blame. Instead he places his animus on Brother Paul and the kind of people that he represents and this has caused his feelings toward this form of religion to harden far beyond what they were. He is torn by the fact that this scheme by Brother Paul may have irreparably damaged his relationship with Jenny. He is doing what he did before, backing off and letting her work through what she intends to do, but the uncertainty of it is preying on him. After she spoke with him and told him everything that she had that was plaguing her, he asked her to marry him. -------------------------------------------------------- Aunt Dina: Derek's aunt. She started Java Jolt's. She was a lesbian and a foster mother to Derek. The church tried to block her and take Derek themselves, but as his only close living relative the courts refused them. She turned the Christian bookstore his parents had started into a coffee shop and made it very successful. She died of colon cancer a little over a year before the Shift. She played the flute and was a talented musician and had encouraged that interest in music with Derek. She was involved in a serious relationship with Trisha McGillan ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Mindy: (no last name given) Mindy is Derek's former girlfriend. They had only been dating a few weeks when the Shift happened. Mindy shifted into the body of a red haired man who was only a few years older than she was. He works at Java Jolts with Derek. They mutually ended their relationship and have remained friends. Mindy is pushing Derek to get involved with Jenny because he recognizes that Derek is attracted to her. Mindy did love Derek, but that love has changed into a close male friendship in the aftermath of the Shift. Regardless of their previous relationship he wants Derek to be happy since he is one of the few unshifted people remaining and he knows that Derek is at a bit of a loss for what that means to him. He likes Jenny and sees her as what Derek needs in his life. He also recognizes from her actions that she is drawing closer to him from her experience as a woman before the Shift. He and Derek would often play music together. Mindy maneuvered Derek into asking Jenny out officially after steadily pushing him to first get involved with Jenny and later to make the step into becoming her lover. He did this for two reasons. First because he recognized that Derek was already much more in love with Jenny than he had been with her and second to win the monthly betting pool on when the two of them would get together. The new pool is when they will be getting married and now includes the staff at Bob's country kitchen as well. The pool restarts every month. Teddy: Teddy had been a tall thin man with a slight stutter before the Shift. He switched into a very short black woman. She is also very fine boned and has a thin narrow face. She speaks with a very high pitched voice. Mindy calls her 'Tinkerbell' sometimes. They get along fairly well. Teddy works the day shift at Java Jolt's as a barista and usually spends many of her evenings there with friends after work. Jamaal: Jamaal is a new hire at Java Jolt's. He shifted into the body of a thirteen year old Korean-American girl. She is even smaller than Jenny is and at first thought that Jenny was Derek's wife. She had been a black twenty-two year old first string linebacker on an athletic scholarship before the Shift. After the Shift she was dropped, but she is still taking classes. The university has been forced to make arrangements for students like her until more permanent decisions can be made. Derek hired her when taking care of Jenny began to be one of his priorities. Whitney: Whitney is a 42 year old white woman that Derek hired as a part time employee when it became apparent that he would need to spend even greater amounts of time at home to tend to Jenny in the last few weeks of her pregnancy and just after the twins are born. Whitney was a 19 year old Puerto Rican girl who had just graduated from high school. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Bob's Country Kitchen: Bob Desouza: The unshifted owner of Bob's Country Kitchen, the restaurant where Jenny often goes. He develops a fatherly interest in Jenny since she has become a regular at his restaurant during her time at the medical complex. They often have brief friendly conversations when she visits alone and he is guilty of sometimes telling her it's on the house or slipping her an extra portion. The family likes him. Cindy: Cindy was a woman in her late twenties, she shifted into an obese woman in her mid thirties. She works as a waitress at Bob's Country Kitchen. She is making a serious effort to shed the weight and making good progress so far. This makes her very happy. Clarice: Clarice works as a waiter at Bob's. She had been a woman in her early fifties but has shifted into the body of a man in his mid forties. He is balding and very sympathetic to Jenny in her present situation. ------------------------------------------------------------------ The Church of the Blessed: Brother Paul: Brother Paul is known to Derek. He was a leader in the fundamentalist church that his parents had attended before their death. Brother Paul is not his name, it is a title of leadership, but this is not widely known outside of the leadership ranks. Brother Paul is now the main leader of the Church of the Blessed. He was trying to get Derek to return to the Church of his own free will before and had attempted various gambits with him to achieve that. He was also is involved in the attempted assault on Jenny. He is a petty man and resents that Derek's aunt Dina was able to successfully get custody of him after his parents died. It is a personal project for him to return Derek to the Church. He intends to reclaim all the members who have left the church at any time no matter how long ago. He views them as possessions that have been taken from him. He met with Jake when he came to them for help with his difficulty to adjust and he believed that the church could reverse the Shift. Brother Paul used the drug Stromiumhypnol in a successful effort to gain control over Jake, who he raped and renamed Amy and Kim Minton. He is married to Madeline. He has used the drug on her to reshape her into the kind of woman the church believes is proper. He attempts to manipulate Derek and Jenny using drugs and hypnotic suggestion. He is please with the success of his experiment with Jenny, but has no intention of allowing them to remain together after he gets them to go into the camps. He intends to use the drug and brainwashing techniques that they employ to transfer Derek's feelings to his former unshifted girlfriend and cult member Vicki Matthews. He intends to have Jenny mind wiped after she has her children. The children are to be given to separate cult parents and Jenny is to be given to Cody and then Stephan for seven years in recompense for the beating she inflicted on him. She is to be made to serve them as a concubine during that time. Brother Paul also considered either having her spayed and kept as a concubine and later a servant or later giving her mind wiped body over to another uncursed man as a wife. He has decided that she will begin serving her penance with him first and after that has been completed she will be married to another and used to breed a lower caste of people. He is captured by Col. Schmidt's 6842nd Infantry Group during the assault on Easton Salvation Camp. Madeline: She is Brother Paul's secretary and assists him in his conspiracy. Madeline was the former Brother James. Brother James shifted into the body of Brother Paul's wife. She was one of the first victims of the Church's method of conversion. After they began to reorganize after the Shift one of the first decisions that the leadership made was that even if God had chosen to mix the souls inside the bodies that did not negate the marriage and she was compelled to remain Brother Paul's wife. She has now been so thoroughly brainwashed that she no longer even thinks of herself as ever being other than his wife and a devoted servant of the Church. If she is confronted about being a man previously she falls back into saying it was the Lord's will that she be a woman and she has accepted it. Sister Mary: An unshifted woman who is in charge of converting men who have shifted into female bodies to what the church has decreed is proper behavior. Vicki is currently assisting her in this after failing to recruit her brother to the church. Brother John: A high ranking member of the Church of the Blessed. He works with and is subordinate to Brother Paul. He was a mid level member of the KKK before the Shift. He is responsible for recruiting specific people who would have influential positions that they could turn and harness to their goals. Brother Luke: A high ranking member of the Church of the Blessed who is responsible for creating the drug Stromiumhypnol also known to them as the 'Water of Truth' that is used by them in their program of brainwashing. Brother Judas: A former member of Long Knives, an Aryan Nation splinter group. He heads the enforcement arm of the church and is responsible for whatever dirty work is required. Brother Thomas. An unshifted member of the original church of the Blessed. He is the enforcer of doctrine so there will never be doubt again in the future. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The Medical team Dr. Pritchart (no first name given): Dr. Pritchart was a 67 year old General Practitioner. He is the senior partner and founder of his practice. He switched with a 15 year old boy and is amused that people think of the TV character Doogie Hauser when they see him now. He is Jenny's primary care physician. Timothy Maria: A nurse that works in Dr. Pritchart's office. She had been switched with a large beefy man, think very large biker. How often she comes into the story depends on how it develops Dr. Melinda/Dan Waverly: Jenny's OB/GYN, she has had a professional relationship and friendship with Dr. Pritchart for over 40 years. She was a 69 year old physician who had retired but has resumed her practice after becoming a woman in her early to mid fifties. Dr. Warren (first name not given yet): Jenny's psychiatrist. He is unshifted and is very warm and is able to establish rapport very quickly. He does have a manner of speaking that suggest that he is English but he is not. (for some reason he sounds like Basil Exposition {Austin Powers films} to me when I write him.) Dr. Min Luo, (pronounced Min Low): Renmin University Beijing. Dr. Min's family apparently died during a bus crash at the time of the shift. Dr. Min is part of the team researching the effect of long term memory and how it can be accessed. She thinks that is like having the slots where the words were wiped away but the places remain. When the words are heard again and the meanings understood, they fit back into the slot and are identified by the mind. Once the pieces all fit back together it is like reassembling a puzzle. She was male but had switched into the body of a tall Congolese woman who had been studying in Beijing. She laments that she is now a lauwei (foreigner) for the rest of her life back home and is considering staying in the US if possible to continue her research. Jenny invites her over for dumplings. She enjoyed doing this and it went a long way to making her feel not so far away from home. Dr. Mika Nakamura: Mika was Mike Nakamura. Dr. Nakamura is the great-grandson of Nisei in the 442nd RCT, She is the behavioral psychologist overseeing J.L.'s team. She is a is a female dwarf about 32. She has pale skin like milk and bright red hair, she has a strong Irish contribution to her physical heritage. She was a homosexual man before and has been able to adjust to being a woman fairly well. She also has a good sense of humor and tells Jenny that she is magically delicious. People that have come into their lives (In order of appearance) Karen Wells: The interviewer at the embassy in Guangzhou. She switched into an Indian man on a trip to Hong Kong and finally gets Jenny to reveal the exact details of the night she switched with Sonya. Her male name is not used with interviews and it is never given. Lui Hong: (pronounced Lew Hong) Hong is a close friend who worked with James for several years when he was in China, he switched with a man he knew who lived in the same apartment complex and that he knew from the same gym. His age is about the same. He helped Jenny close down her home before she left and she has kept in regular touch with him since she has returned. Jenny has him send her some clothing she had bought on Taubau when she out grew the clothing she had. Kyle: (no last name given) Mattie's missing boyfriend. Coach Ramsey, one of the junior coach's at their school shifted into his body. Kyle is missing and presumed dead. Judge Gillespie: A unshifted judge that is mentioned but does not interact with Jenny. Judge Gillespie is a former marine and very protective of his fellow veterans. He was involved in George's court case before it was settled. He later gave the family advice on how to delay and possibly get Amy's restraining order made permanent as long as she was under the church's control. Belinda Wilkes: A fifteen year old woman who has a fourteen year old son Kyle. She was 21, he was 3. She switched into her younger sister Heather and he into her boyfriend. Kira meets her in a grocery store and helps her. She and Jenny have been talking and spending some time together since they have the same situation with their children. She and Kyle will be invited to their cookouts several times starting in Jenny's 2nd trimester. Kyle Wilkes: Belinda's fourteen year old son, inside he is the same three year old boy. Ann Kirby: No previous name given Ann Kirby owns the sex shop and the drive-in theater that Jenny visits. She shifted into the body of the leader of a morality group that was trying unsuccessfully to close her down. She is trying to design replacement tattoos for her new body. Krystal: A man who shifted from a woman. The man had been really involved in working out before the Shift. Krystal continues to do so, but not as much. He is single and meets Kira and Dianne in the supermarket when they invite him to take part in a three way with them as a means of restoring their own sexual relationship. Dou: A female friend of Sonya's. She is mentioned in the conversation about Sonya with Derek, but doesn't enter into the story more than that at this time. Cody and Stephan: These are the unshifted thugs that Brother Paul dispatched to take Derek's staged harassment and make it real. Cody had been asked by Derek to help him do this as a way to create a means of getting to meet Jenny. He did not want any of what they actually did to take place. He had more in mind for Cody to make a nuisance of himself before being chased away. They both serve under Brother Judas and were also responsible for attacking Trisha in Asheville. Trisha McGillan: Trish was a lesbian lover of Derek's Aunt Dina in her mid-forties. They were very close and after Dina died she moved to Asheville, N.C. She switched into a 38 year old black man who was also homosexual. Brother Paul arranged for him to be assaulted and badly beaten to get Derek to leave Jenny alone so he could have access to her and further her conditioning while Derek was away. In the attack he lost sight in his right eye and most of the use of his left arm. Trisha is in a new relationship with a man named Arnie. Vicki Matthews: Vicki was the woman that Derek was seeing before Mindy. She was one of the young women that he met through his intermittent contact with the church. He has known her since he was a child. After his aunt died she used this as an opportunity to successfully become part of his life romantically. Other church girls had been trying to get into Derek's life, but his wariness over the church and their submissive attitudes had not allowed them the chance to establish a relationship with him. Vicki's mix of dominance in traditional areas along with the emotional opening Dina's death created was her success. In some ways, Jenny is like Vicki. Vicki and Derek's relationship ended because of friction between them over her insistence that he return to the church with her and her inability to mask her disdain for people like his aunt Dina. Agent Miguel Fetterman (was Maria Fetterman nee' Lopez) Maria Fetterman was a married woman, she was Hispanic. she had switched with a prisoner just after completing a prisoner transfer. She is now a white male who is heavily tattooed with Aryan Nation symbols. She had been used already to infiltrate some groups under deep cover and is currently in charge of the task force investigating the Church of the Blessed. Her daughter had switched into the body of a member of the Church of the Blessed. After she was compelled to join the group she attempted to use Stromiumhypnol on him. His daughter is currently in FBI custody. Brandy (Brandon) Matthews: Brandy was the brother of Vicki. He left the church when he was a young adult. He was an FBI agent and shifted into the body of a black woman in her mid thirties. As part of the COTB's plan to reclaim former members, Vicki attempted to use Stromiumhypnol on him to get him to return. This attempt failed and he reported it. Along with other attempts that were made on relatives this alerted agencies to the threat posed by the church. She has been working with the task force assembled to take this group out. She was to be working undercover as George's live in physical therapist since Danny and Sam contacted the DEA about the drugs they found. She also knows Derek from when they were in the same group within the church. During the trip to get Jenny out of Derek's home she witnesses Jenny's reaction and calls in for her back up team when she heard that both of them were to be going to the camp that day. During this call she was informed that the go order to take down the group had been given and additional agents were dispatched to her to both protect them and use them for bait if church agents made a further attempt on them. After the church is crushed she and the other agents depart to assist in that task. Heather (Homer) DeChamblais Heather is a 32 year old blind woman. She was a 64 year old French- Canadian man named Homer. Even though he had lived in the US for many years he had never lost the accent or the figures of speech that he learned in Quebec. Homer had also been an English literature teacher before he retired just before the Shift. She meets Jenny in City Park. Heather was his deceased wife's name and he took it as a way to keep her with him still. She had come to the park with a group from a home for the blind and had gotten separated from them. She senses that Jenny has a deep problem and starts talking with her. As they talk they discuss what love is how it is part of you this conversation goes a long way to helping Jenny come to terms with what she will do in her relationship with Derek. Lt. Colonel Archibald Schmidt: Col. Schmidt was a ninety-five year old World War Two veteran. He had used his Four-F brother's birth certificate to volunteer for service in 1943 at the age of sixteen. He was one of the troops who participated in the liberation of Buchenwald concentration camp in 1945. He was recalled to active duty for the Korean War and when he was to be demobilized afterward he revealed his deception and was successfully able to enter the service for the remainder of his career. He had earned a battlefield promotion to 2nd Lieutenant in the last days of the war, but because of his previous deception promotion for him was delayed and he retired at the rank of Major. He is currently in the thirty-six year old body of a Pakistani woman. She presented herself as a volunteer in the days immediately after the Shift. She was mustered into service with an emergency rank of Lt. Colonel in command of the 6842nd composite infantry group. A unit made up of others like herself who found themselves in younger bodies of both sexes. She commands the assault on Easton, the salvation camp where Brother Paul is hiding. What she sees there brings back Buchenwald to her in glaring screaming flashback and she nearly gives the order to massacre the entire staff of the camp. First Sergeant Herman Mullens: First Sergeant Mullens was a career soldier who had been gravely wounded during the Tet Offensive. He had been drafted during Korea and had remained in the service. He was serving as a platoon sergeant when he was wounded. He was of Scotch-Norwegian heritage, but shifted into the twenty-four year old body of a black ambulance driver who was picking up another patient at the home he was staying in. He was also offered a commission, but convinced them to make him a First Sergeant instead reasoning that good senior NCOs were of more value. He is Col. Schmidt's Top.
