Wish Shift: Chapter Two Deflection Year 1 A.S. Day 32 No one laughed when Kira said that to her. Not that it wasn't just like something she would say and that it wasn't amusing in its own way. Jenny was mostly sure it was because none of them really knew what to say. Like her mom had said to her in the restroom, it was just something that he never expected to hear from her son, even if her son was now her daughter. She supposed that it also brought home to her sister Kira and her dad that due to their own changes it could be very likely something that they would also find themselves revealing in time and for Mattie and her mom it was something that he would never say for the first time or ever again. It was just too big and yet so intimate for all of them. As much as Kira could try to cut it down with humor, her wit really wasn't up to this task. "I suppose that we should be moving along dad," Jenny said. "I've got everything and if you don't mind I could really use something to eat before we get on the highway." Bringing it back to practical things that she could do something about did what Jenny hoped it would with her. She asked Jenny if there was any place in particular she fancied. Jenny was not in any degree picky though and told her anyplace would be fine. The truth was that she was not hungry until after the words were out of her mouth. Now that this was out in the open and she had them focused on something else she realized that, without warning, she was ravenous. Little Jake picked up her biggest suitcase when Jenny offered it to him. He only grunted a little, though it was packed to the weight limit. She thought she detected a little pleasure in his eyes at how easily he was able to carry it once he had plucked it from the trolley. Jenny handed out her other things and they made their way to short term parking. Once they got on the road, Jenny felt there was one more thing she had to say. "I know that this is pretty big to hit you with right off the plane. And I really wasn't going to let you know like this. But can you just be patient until we get home? I really would like everyone there so I can go over everything with you once we're all together, if that's all right." Dad made the non committal grunt she had managed to keep sounding exactly the same even though it welled from another source. Jenny relaxed a little. Everyone else murmured a quick agreement and concentrated on small talk that wasn't intended to do anything other than take up time as the miles rolled behind them. It usually took about five hours on a good day to get home, but mom had been right when he said that traffic would not really be all that much of a problem. The normally infuriating Atlanta traffic was minimal and even though there were even less people on the interstate and more checkpoints, they still got out of the city fairly quickly. Dad customarily didn't speed, not because she was fanatical about following traffic laws, but because she didn't want to give the highwaymen the opportunity dip their hands into her pocket. At least that is what she had always said. Regardless Jenny thought that they made it home pretty quickly. It was about two hours till dusk when they turned into the driveway. Jenny didn't expect to get much sleep. Jet lag was in full effect and she didn't think she would even be able to lie down until just before everyone else would be getting up sometime tomorrow. She could see from the cars parked around the yard that Kim and Jake were already here and George's old battered Taurus peeked out from around back. Grandma's car was up by the door, but from what they said about her watching over George that wasn't any surprise. Her travel trailer was pulled away from the side of the garage where they normally kept it when Jenny was away and her old black Silverado had been moved out of the garage as well. She could see the water and power lines snaking across the back yard to their hookups. When they got everything deposited inside, she flipped on a light for later and went into the house. George was in a wheelchair pulled up at the edge of the kitchen table. Mr. Jacobs had avoided them as often as possible, preferring to submit to them only when he couldn't avoid it, but he had years of practice that George lacked. Jenny had gone in last this time. She wanted all of them to get settled before she started in with this conversation. Mom and Mattie had already gone in while Kira, Little Jake. and Dianne helped her download the car. Kim and Big Jake were quiet and that was a big change for Jenny. Jake was usually a very opinionated and domineering husband. He had never mistreated Kim, but it was plain to see on her face that she was still in shock every time she looked at what had been her face. Jenny could tell that her sister and his new role as Jake's husband was something that Jake had not even begun to accept and only faced it because she couldn't avoid or ignore it. Jenny made a mental note to only use her male name with her for the indefinite future. The nineteen year old girl sitting beside George she figured was grandma. Her hair was shaved close to the sides so you could see the scalp. There were several empty holes in her nose and ears that had held piercings. Right now she only had one earring in each lobe though. Jenny looked over at Kira knowing that she had left these things out, as well as the brick red dye job grandma was sporting just to mess with her. She shot her a dirty look and Kira stifled a giggle. She made her greetings, but it was nothing like what would have been normal. When the standard questions about her trip were out of the way she took a deep breath and decided to not delay it any more. "I've got a couple of things I need to tell you," she started. "Mom, dad and everyone who came to pick me up already know one, but only because it couldn't be avoided." "Are you coming out on us now?" Jake managed to make what had been her sister's voice sound gravelly. "No Jake, I'm not coming out," she shot back. Privately Jenny had the idea that Jake would be though. If she tried to maintain what she had been, Jenny could see her becoming a butch lesbian pretty easily. "What I have to say is that I'm pregnant," Jake's eyes flashed at her and she held up her hand to keep her quiet. "Let me finish, Jake," she said to her before she could even get started. Jenny didn't have to even speculate that she wouldn't like being told that by her one bit. "I found out from the embassy. They told me when I was at the end of my interviews. I know that you might not recognize me, specifically because I don't do things the way she did, but I switched with Sonya when it happened. They told me that, when it happened, she was already about six weeks pregnant and probably didn't even suspect it herself. From what they told me I'm almost ten weeks now." "Where is Sonya?" Kira asked. She was being very serious now, her version of dad mode. "That's the tricky part," Jenny answered. "The fact is they don't know." Mattie gave a half gulp/half shudder making Kim lean over and draw his small form close to him. "They don't know if she went into someone near or far or into someone who...didn't make it." Jenny stopped for a second and unclenched her small hands. She had been clenching them so hard that the knuckles blazed white through the skin. She hadn't even realized that she had done so. "Even though they don't really know, they did tell me what could have happened though." This part was going to be harder than she thought, Jenny realized. "They think Sonya might be...here," she said bringing her hands back from the table to rest on the slight swelling of her belly. "Oh you poor girl," she heard grandma exclaim in her strange young voice. "What made them think that? How could they even think that something like that even would happen?" Jake demanded. "They thought that, because of the other thing I have to tell you all," she said, bracing herself for what was coming next. She had everyone's complete attention now, not that she ever thought she was lacking it before. "I asked them not to tell you this, because I didn't want you to get the wrong idea. You see when...it...happened, the first thing I thought was that Sonya had switched into me. But...he...didn't respond to anything I did. He just lay there until the retrieval team from the embassy came for us." "Oh, my God," she heard Kim say softly. "I can't imagine what that was like for you." "They took us both to the embassy compound and I didn't see him again until just after they confirmed that I was me. I asked them not to tell you about it, because I didn't want you to think that I was in a coma or something. The truth is they think that Sonya and the baby switched when we did. At least they're mostly guessing that's what happened." "And what happened to your body then?" Dianne asked. "Did they just leave it there? What are you going to do?" "They had him transferred to Midland's Memorial just before I got on the flight to come home. They told me that they would contact me once the transfer was finished, but I don't expect to hear from them for a few more hours." "What was their reasoning for telling you this?" George said, speaking for the first time since she had come in. "They won't do it for shits and giggles," Jake added sourly. "They told me that while they were keeping my body under observation, that he was starting to move in a way typical of a newborn. There was nothing about his actions that suggested that he was comatose. They want to keep him under close observation for the next several months." "Jesus, that's gonna cost you a fortune!" Kira blurted out. "No, they're picking up the tab on this," Jenny answered. "This is research to them. One of the things that they told me was understanding things like what was happening to us was a top priority. And our case is of particular interest to them." "And you believed them? Jake said shaking her head at what she was indicating by her action as disbelief at Jenny's newly gained female gullibility. "Jake, I don't really have a choice in this now do I?" Jenny answered back. She didn't want to have it out with Jake right now. That kind of unpleasantness was not on the menu as far as she was concerned. "I guess not," she grudgingly agreed. "Anyway, as soon as they get in touch with me, I'm going to hook up the travel trailer and I'm going to go down there for the next few weeks. They want to evaluate us both, we're kind of a special case so they fast tracked it. I've already got a series of appointments with a slew of doctors down there. I don't really know how long I'll be there though." "Sounds like you could use some company," Kira said after a minute. "You want Dianne and me to come down there with you?" "You know I would, but I wasn't going to ask you tonight," she answered. "You sure it's not a problem Dianne?" "You know you don't even have to ask that," she answered right away. "But you might have to give us a day or so to get things straight here. We might have to drive down after you leave if you have to go before then." "Or I could ride down with her and you can follow when things get set," Kira said. "We'll see," Dianne answered. "So is that everything? Or is there something else," dad said. It was the first thing she had really said since Jenny had started telling them about what had happened over there. "No, that's it," Jenny answered more than a little relieved that this particular part of the conversation was over. She had no intention of telling any of them just how female she had become since the Shift and definitely not why that was. As it was she planned to keep that to herself while she was working it out a little more before broaching that topic. "There is one thing that I'd like to know," her father said. "And that is what do we call you. You still haven't told us. Your mother and I both already had names that either one of us could use and your brother changed his to that trek girl he had a thing for." Kira shook her head in bemusement at that. "The rest of us are pretty much the same as before." Jake scowled at that last part and Kim just looked uncomfortable. "So how about you?" "It's Jenny," she answered. "Jenny Sonya Minton." She watched her mom and grandmother's slow smiles from across the table and knew she had made the right choice. She was finally official. ---------------------------------------------------------- Year 1 A.S. Day 33 Jenny had bought her travel trailer shortly after she moved to China for work. It made sense to do that. She didn't have a house before she left and most of her possessions could easily fit in it. It made it easy to store her stuff out of everyone else's way. It wasn't that she couldn't stay with family when she was back. She often did that already, but the 10'X40' foot trailer gave her options just by having it and she liked that. She'd bought it secondhand her first visit back and had spent the better part of a month renovating it with dad and Greg. It made a handy thing to have when she took a trip and she had planned to use it to stay in when she came back for good to ease the transition financially. The old black Silverado she had owned since college. Between her dad, Kira and George it was in good shape. They were pretty meticulous about keeping it in good condition while Jenny was away so she didn't have any misgivings about using it for this trip. She knew that they used both the truck and the travel trailer occasionally while she was away, but she had never had any problem with them doing that. She knew that they would look out for her things like they were their own and would treat them with respect. She wished she could say the same for Jake. After everyone else called it a night, she retreated to the trailer. It would be several hours before she would even attempt to call it a night. She really wasn't looking forward to the next couple of weeks of jet lag. She was just about to get settled when she got the call from the hospital that the transfer was completed. She confirmed her appointments and then sent Kira a quick text. The family knew that she would keep weird hours for the next few weeks, so she knew that Kira would not think anything strange about getting a text from her at zero dark thirty. She lay back on the mattress and got back to sorting herself out. She was glad that this part was done with, but there was still so much else to knaw at her mind and she really hadn't even started. Odd thoughts kept popping into her mind and she wasn't even aware of just when she drifted off because of it. Kira was already back from her and Dianne's place when Jenny woke up a few hours later. Jenny didn't know just how long she had been waiting for her to get up. Jenny had not bothered to unpack very much last night so she just fished a few things out of the suitcase to get her through today. She had on the black and white sleeveless striped dress that Sonya had loved wearing and a pair of white running shoes. She had bought it for Sonya for her birthday shortly after they started dating. She had pulled her long thick hair back into a loose ponytail and had put on a little pale pink lipstick. She still had no real skill with cosmetics, but she was going to the DMV today and she didn't want to let Sonya down by looking like shit. She looked into the mirror for a long few minutes afterward and then looked down at the faint bulge of her growing belly. "I miss you baby," she said quietly. "Holy shit," Kira said when Jenny walked into the kitchen. "That is the last thing I thought I would see you wearing this morning. And are you wearing lipstick already? I didn't see that coming." The smell from the coffee made her stomach give a quick lurch and Jenny braced herself to run to the toilet down the hall, but it settled and she relaxed a bit. Kira looked at her concerned. "Anything else making you hurl yet?" Jenny shook her head and dosed her cup of coffee with lots of cream and sugar. She didn't drink it like dad anymore. Sonya's taste in coffee had stayed with Jenny it seemed. "Not yet, but anything can set it off. I hope I don't have the same problem with bacon that Kim had." "No shit," Kira answered. "I'm surprised she didn't puke the kids up since she was craving it the whole damned time as well." "So why'd you wear that today? It looks good, but I damn sure wasn't expecting it from you," she said. "I have to go to the DMV today. I want her to look nice," Jenny said and left it at that. She didn't feel like going into the fact that since that first night she had felt less and less like the man she had been before. She had noticed that everyone in the family and for that matter most of the people she had seen since the Shift tended to dress in ways that did not lean either overtly masculine or feminine. Kira was a good example of that this morning. She was wearing a pair of tan cargo shorts and a baggy T-shirt she had bought a few years ago. She wasn't wearing any make up or jewelry either. Last night Jake had been wearing new clothes. She also had clearly not been wearing a bra and Jenny was certain that she had absolutely refused to wear anything that Kim had owned before unless she had to. She had even made Kim wear his delicate wedding ring on a thin feminine chain around his neck while Jake had her own suspended from a heavy one around hers. "Mom and Dad still here?" she asked. "They went out about an hour ago. George needed them to help take him to his physical therapy. They should be back in a little while," she answered sipping her coffee. "Did Grandma go with them?" Jenny asked stirring her coffee. "No, she had to go to work this morning, but she'll probably swing by here when she's done. You up for a cookout tonight? The thought of dad's BBQ ribs flashed in Jenny's mind and she felt instantly hungry. "You bitch," she said to Kira, "now I'm starving." "That's a yes then," Kira said. Jenny ignored her and started pulling out the ingredients for a monster omelet out of the fridge. "So what's the game plan? You said DMV and I got your text when I woke up so what's the deal?" Jenny started dicing vegetables and ham. "DMV for my license and registrations and police department for my CCP. I want to get all of that stuff out of the way before I head down there. And I have to call a couple places to rent a lot for the trailer while we're there as well. You going to bring your pop-up or are you and Dianne gonna squeeze in with me?" "We talked about it on the way home, I'm gonna ride down with you and she'll get the pop-up and follow us down in a couple days. Anything else?" Jenny added the diced meat and vegetables to the omelet and started shredding some cheese over them. "I probably need to hit the bank to get things straight with them if I can today." "Not today you're not. They won't open for another week. You ok for cash?" Kira would know better than most Jenny thought since she worked at the same bank Jenny used. "Yeah I'm good, I closed out my Chinese bank accounts and converted it all before I left." She put the omelet on a plate and started dousing it with Tabasco. "You finish then and we'll get going," Kira said while Jenny dug in. After Jenny fished out the papers she needed from her safe, she put them in the thick folder holding her new passport and all of the other documentation that the embassy had given her. She slipped it into the backpack along with some emergency clothes. She had no intention of walking around wearing this if she couldn't make it to a toilet like had already happened to her a couple of times in China. "You and that damned backpack," Kira said to her as they walked out the door to the truck. "What?" she asked. She knew what she meant though. Jenny had gotten used to hauling the backpack around where ever she went in China and even when she came back to the US she still did it without thinking. Kira just rolled her eyes in mock exasperation. She opened the door to the truck and threw the bag in before climbing in after it. The truck was so much bigger now. She needed to grab the steering wheel to help swing into the driver's seat. She leaned over and rooted around in front of the seat, found the lever and started to slide the seat forward. When she got it adjusted she settled in behind the wheel. "Crap," she said. "What is it?" Kira asked "I feel like I need a goddamned booster seat." "You want to take my car?" Kira asked. Jenny looked over at her. Kira's legs were pushed up a bit by Jenny moving the seat so far forward. "No," she said after a minute "but you should probably drive this time," Kira agreed and they took a few minutes to switch out and readjust the seat. Kira cranked the engine and pulled the big truck out of the drive. "I can already see a new set of truck seats," she said. "Yeah this bench seat just won't cut it for everyone else when you drive," Kira answered. The DMV was packed. Jenny was expecting this and spent the time waiting talking with Kira. They didn't get into anything personal, too many people around for that kind of talk and just hearing her brother talking about inconsequential things was soothing in its own way. She eventually got to the counter and after wading through the stack of paperwork the embassy had provided she got the truck and the travel trailer's registration changed and went back to sit with Kira to wait for her turn to get her driver's license photo changed. She had another attack of morning sickness while they were waiting, but she got to the toilet in time and didn't have to do anything other than use some mouthwash and put on some more of the lipstick for the photo. There were less people in line at the police station. She got through that pretty quickly and with all of her documentation there was not any real trouble getting her concealed carry permit updated. She did have to go through a qualification course soon, but that was not anything she considering unexpected. She made a mental note to swing by the range and get some practice time in before she went down for her appointments. She considered asking George if he wanted to come with her. She figured he would since it was one of the things they did regularly before. But she decided to wait until later to ask him. ---------------------------------------------------------- Year 1 A.S. Day 38 The night before she was to leave mom pulled her off to one side after dinner. "I know what you're doing Jenny," he said when they were alone. Jenny looked back at him and didn't say anything. "You're being in control the same way you always do when things are falling apart. You do the same thing every time. I've been watching you running around, checking things off your list. Keeping in control. Keeping busy so you don't have to deal with the rest of your life. You need to quit it." Jenny started to open her mouth to say it wasn't like that and just stopped instead. "Don't talk, just listen ok? mom said. "You need to do these things, I know. But you've been burying yourself in details since you got back. You need to back up and take some time to deal with what you're ignoring or you're going to be a basket case when you run out of things to do to avoid it. You keep trying to be a rock and it's going to break you." "I have to do this mom," she started to say. But mom just nodded and stood up and motioned for Jenny to come with him. They walked down the hallway into the bathroom. Mom closed the door behind them. He stood behind Jenny in the big mirror. "I've been watching you every day," he said. "You haven't been wearing anything but dresses and a little makeup and you look beautiful. You look like you're handling it, you really do even though you only go so far. She was lovely, I can see why you fell for her." He pointed at the mirror. "That's not her anymore, it's you. You're not honoring her when you do what you've been doing, you're embalming her. You can't play dress up the rest of your life. I've been watching Jake do it since the Shift and honestly I'm worried about her and what it could mean for Kim and the kids." He motioned for Jenny to sit down. "That woman in the mirror is you now. She's going to be you tomorrow. She's going to be you the day after that and every other day that follows. Mom placed his hand on her stomach. "If they are right, that is her now. You are going to be this baby's mother for the rest of your life and it doesn't matter who she was before." "I know you said that you are wearing these things because they fit you and they were hers. But they're not anymore. These are your clothes now. You need to accept that when you put them on it's because they make the woman you are now look beautiful. You need to wear them because you want to wear them. When you put on makeup it should be because you choose to, because you want to look good as a woman, not because she did that." Mom looked her in the eyes. "Sonya is gone Jenny." Jenny collapsed against her mother's chest. "I miss her," she said over and over through the tears. Her mother didn't say anything else as he held her and let her wallow in her loss.

Wish Shift Dreamscapes

Wish shift: Dreamscapes 1 A.S. Day? The first thing I noticed was the reek all of the flowers. The smell of them made the air noxious with their scent. It surrounded me and seemed like it was impregnating even my clothes. It was in my hair and lingered like a thick blanket in my nose and mouth. It was sweet and warm. I could feel soft satin covering me entirely except for my hands. My fingers are bare. I wondered where it came from. I didn't own anything in satin. But it's here now,...

Wish Shift The Sand Between Her Toes

Wish Shift: Chapter Twenty One The Sand Between Her Toes Year 1 A.S. Day 115 "Hang on I want to ask Derek if he can get away," she said. Jenny quickly dialed Derek and talked to him for a few minutes and then hung up. "Derek can't come," she said obviously disappointed. "He can't get away from the shop today. If you had given us more notice he probably could have," she said turning back to packing her beach bag. Kira glanced at Dianne. She'd noticed the us in that sentence...

Wish Shift Pathways

Wish Shift: Chapter Eight Pathways Year 1 A.S. Day 46 Jenny heard the car pull into her lot in the dim glow of light just before dawn. She had been up until almost midnight the night before and had needed to rush to the toilet sometime in the early morning hours to deal with a bout of morning sickness. Those had been coming less frequently this last week and she was starting to hope that she may be close to parting ways with this particular aspect of being a woman soon. Leaning...

Wish Shift Adjustments

Wish Shift: Adjustments 1 A.S. Day 147 When Derek got out of the shower, he was still half in amazement at Jenny. He toweled himself dry and wrapped the damp towel around himself. He figured he might as well make the bed after he put some clothes on. He really wanted to do something nice for Jenny today, but right now he couldn't think of what it should be. He found himself thinking about what she had told him about Sonya and that brought him back to last night and what she said to...

Wish Shift Tabula Rasa

Wish Shift : Chapter Ten Tabula Rasa Year 1 A.S. Day 56 Before they went to Dr. Waverly's, Kira and Dianne took her to get a couple of new sets of clothes. Jenny had already apologized to them for being angry with how they reacted to her risking herself and the twins, but there were still some dark feelings swimming around them. She was still out of sorts herself as well. She was wearing the last of her inherited bras and in the last couple of days it had been much too tight for...

Wish Shift Template

Wish shift: Chapter Six Template Year 1 A.S. Day 45 Danny had just finished sliding the last of the cubed potatoes off of the cutting board into the pot of boiling water. She glanced across the kitchen at Sam. She was slicing tomatoes and laying them out on the split loaf of Italian bread over the lettuce. Danny reached for an onion and started dicing it. Danny was more than a little proud of Sam the last couple of weeks. Jenny coming home had been a good influence on her in some...

Wish Shift Revelations

Wish Shift: Chapter Twelve Revelations Year 1 A.S. Day 65 Sam looked around the outside dining area at Java Jolts. "You know I don't usually go to places like this," she said. The outside area was pretty simple, just some small white painted metal tables with some white wicker chairs around them. The tables were pulled up close to the plate glass of the front window and on the edge of the sidewalk there were some planters with greenery spilling over the concrete sides. "I know,"...

Wish Shift Two By Moonlight

Wish Shift: Chapter Eighteen Two By Moonlight Year 1 A.S. Day 92 Jenny slowed the truck down and stopped. The little ticket booth at the gate had peeling white paint on its wooden walls and there were a few scattered weeds growing at the base of the small building. Jenny leaned out of the window slightly and handed over the twenty-five dollar admission to the sixty year old man who was bouncing up and down to whatever was on his I phone between cars. He took her money and she...

Wish Shift The Fire That Burns You

Wish Shift: Chapter Thirty-Nine The Fire That Burns You Year 1 A.S. Day 209 Day 254 of Jenny's pregnancy Sleep was constantly avoiding coming to her. Between her now frequent trips to the bathroom, the movement of the twins and the pain from the various parts of her body, it was a wonder that she got any sleep at all. And that was before she even factored in the emotional toll of the last few days. The rage that had been released when the full scope of what had been done to...

Wish Shift Reunion

Part One The Winter of her Heart Wish Shift: Chapter One Reunions 1 A.S. Day 32 She was still trying to sleep. It wasn't her first international trip. The problem was, even with all of the shades down on the windows, you could still see the outline of daylight around them. This made it difficult for her to get relaxed even in ordinary circumstances. Her only consolation this trip was that, for once, the seat was roomy enough. But considering what made that extra room...

Sometime after four p.m., when Kira and Jenny were lighting the charcoal in the small portable grill, Kira's phone started ringing. While Jenny busied herself with using the hand cranked fan to get the coal bed well fired, Kira answered it and started laying out the directions to where they were. Wish Shift: Chapter Fifteen Intake Year 1 A.S. Day 86 Brother Paul sat in the comfortable leather chair in his office. He had striven for the impression of a manager's office rather than something more exalted like the head of a corporation. The lessons she had been getting from mom when he came down to visit and all the practice she had recently was starting to really pay off. The Great Shift Healing Hands

The Great Shift: Healing Hands By Johnny Girl ([email protected]) I stared down at my hands. My hands. I still had trouble believing they were really mine. They were long and slender and delicate and feminine, wearing rings and bracelets, the fingers tipped with sparkly purple fingernail polish. These weren't the hands I was familiar with. They weren't the rough and strong and calloused hands I'd been so dependent on; they were weak and soft and smooth and small and useless...

The Great Shift Summers End

The Great Shift - Summer's End By Limbo's Mistress "Dad, I'm home," a voice from the front of the house called right before I heard the slam of the front door. Then she walked over to the opposite side of the counter and leaned against it, grabbing an apple from...

* Warning, this story uses the events that happened on Sept. 11, 2001 as a loose model in trying to give a feel of the carnage that'd happens during a massive calamity. If you feel this depiction is too traumatizing in bringing up memories, or if you have PTSD issues, you may not want to read ths story.* The Great Shift (Origins) I like many have enjoyed many a story of the fun and mayhem of that fateful day that the world was turned on it's ear, and many a men had to learn...

The Great Shift The Empty Place Inside Part 1 of 2 revised

The Great Shift: The Empty Place Inside by BlueshifTG Part 1 The straps were loosened on the black 1" heel shoes tumbled under the desk. One stockinged foot was on the floor, the other unsteadily balanced on the plastic trash can; the position pulled the leather skirt tight above the green-nailed fingers that absent-mindedly rubbed a spot on the outside of the right knee. The Wish Shift Part One The Winter of Her Heart

The Wish Shift Prologue Year 1 A.S. Day 16 The office had very little decoration. A couple of framed prints on the walls of mountains that could be from anywhere in the western U.S. but existed only in the printmaker's imagination. There were no family pictures on the desk's surface so the young Chinese woman who was presently sitting in one of the two chairs facing the desk knew that this was no one's actual office. It was just an interrogation room. Small, windowless and...

The Great Shift Summers End Part 2

Once upon a time, I used to be the type of guy who firmly believed women could never get ready on time because they could never decide what to wear. I mean, what guy hasn't watched any number of sitcoms or romcoms where the husband/boyfriend continually looks at his watch, becoming more and more exasperated and impatient, while his darling dear tries on an entire wardrobe's worth of clothing? No matter how relaxed the dress code of the event they are attending, the woman has to make...

The Great Shift - Summer's End (Part 4) by Limbo's Mistress Tyrone began to stir about three minutes before the police arrived. I noticed it first, the twitch of the fingers of his left hand. As if I were reliving it all over again. Huddled beneath the blanket, I curled tighter in on myself, and a...

The Great Shift: The Empty Place Inside by BlueshifTG Part 2 The young woman opened her eyes. What she saw was all white, slowly resolving into different shades of white, and two corners. Great Shift The Best Day

Great Shift: The Best Day By Morpheus It was the best day of my life and I was almost ready to burst from pure happiness. Never before had I even imagined that I could be so happy, that anything could be so perfect. Or that I would have the perfect someone to spend the rest of my life with. Just a short while earlier, I had married my beloved Keith, in the most beautiful ceremony that I could have imagined. It was fairly small as neither of us had any family, though there...
