Wish Shift: Chapter Twenty Two The Sun Shines on My Face These things are good: ice cream and cake, a ride on a Harley, seeing monkeys in the trees, the rain on my tongue, and the sun shining on my face. These things are a drag: dust in my hair, holes in my shoes, no money in my pocket, and the sun shining on my face. -Rocky Dennis Year 1 A.S. Day 120 Jenny was slowly pulling apart a cinnamon roll. She had bought a package of them with her from home and was taking her time demolishing them as she sat drinking her tea after she finished with J.L. earlier in the morning. "So do you think you can get away for the day next weekend," she asked Derek. "I can probably arrange something," he said looking in the shop at Mindy and covering his ear. "So what do you have in mind?" "It's Kira's plan," she said, "I'm just as much along for the ride as you are if you can come." "So what does she have in mind then?" he asked. "Since she said she was bringing George, I would suspect that it involves her boat, the lake and being knee deep in fish for the day," she said. "She's been saying we should do that when things get settled a bit since I got back." "I haven't gone fishing that way before," he said. "My dad took me bank fishing for crappie at a creek near the river, but that was a long time ago." Derek looked back in the shop and sat down. Jenny had stopped noticing when he did that. It was just him keeping an eye on things inside, even though he was giving her most of his attention at the moment. "So which one is George again?" he asked. Jenny slipped a marker on her page and put her book on the table. When Derek had come up she had laid it down on top of her belly, but that started the twins kicking. "That's right you haven't met him have you, you've just heard us talking about him," she said. "Actually you have something in common," she peeled another layer off of her cinnamon roll. "What's that?" he asked. Jenny looked at him. "His mom and dad died in a car crash too. They got hit by a drunk driver and my parents have been taking care of him ever since he was fourteen. George is actually more like my youngest brother than my cousin. He and Kira have always been closest though. George has been having a hard time of it since the Shift," she said taking another roll out of the package and licking some of the icing off of it. Derek looked hard at Jenny. "Considering that what you have on your plate since the Shift, you saying that he is having a hard time of it does not bode well." He leaned back in his chair and sipped some of his iced mocha waiting for her to continue. "George lost his legs and forty years Derek. He's older than my mom and dad now. Dianne said that he's finally started to be able to walk again. So yeah, I'd count that as a little harder than the hand I got dealt," she said. Derek didn't say anything. She was right, that was a hard deal. "So you guys used to do this all the time then?" he asked. "Whenever I was back after I went to work in China. Fishing on Kira's boat, camping sometimes while we did that too. We started hiking the trail up to Canada a couple of years ago. We're probably going to see about doing that again sometime next year," she said finishing the roll. "So can you come with me when she gets here?" Derek looked at her. Her wanting him to be there for this was written all over her face and he wanted to do it as well, even if he wasn't very good at fishing. "Of course I will," he said. He was going to have to find some way to make this up to Mindy later when he could. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Year 1 A.S. Day 126 Just before dawn. Derek had gotten to Jenny's house pretty early, it was still dark out. She was awake already, she tended to be an early riser even now with the twins becoming more active. She had told him that Kira would be coming up early in the morning and that they would probably just stop by long enough to pick them up before heading straight to the lake around dawn. Derek was looking forward to this. His dad had never been more than an occasional fisherman and aunt Dina didn't do it at all. He had done a little fishing with some of the guys growing up, but that was just as intermittent. When he told Mindy that he was going to be away for the day he laughed and told Derek that he was glad that he learned his lesson since last time. Derek laughed about that with Mindy, but if it had been anyone else other than him, he would have probably fired them for that towel stunt. But then only Mindy would have done it anyway and he hadn't started that playful habit, until after they had gotten romantically involved a few weeks before the Shift. But it since it was Mindy that did it, he usually gave him a lot of latitude since the Shift had ended their romantic relationship. He hadn't seen Mindy's original body since the Shift happened while they were at Java Jolts. Derek didn't remember the name of whoever was in there now and she had only stayed around for a little while. After the initial shock, she had left and not returned. When Mindy had come into the back office/cum storeroom a few weeks ago and told him his girlfriend was back, and she was asking for him, AND that she was pregnant; he had walked out expecting to see Mindy's body on the other side of the counter and not the pretty Chinese woman that Mindy had been teasing him about having a thing for. It had been a lot rougher driving Jenny around now than he told her it would be as well, but Derek didn't mind doing it. Mindy had been after him to get involved with her from the start. Since he saw how much attention that Derek was paying to her from the first time she walked by, he just wouldn't let it slide. Only when he saw Derek get involved with Jenny later did he stop pushing him about it. And he had been going out of his way to smooth the path between them ever since. In some ways he thought it was Mindy's way of making up for how they couldn't stay together now after the Shift. He gave a quick knock on the door and opened it saying that it was just him as he entered. She was wedged behind the little counter in the kitchen alcove making up a couple of thermoses of coffee and tea. She handed him a mug, smiled and told him good morning. Derek picked it up from the counter and took an appreciative sip. She had dosed it just right. After picking her up every morning she didn't need to ask how he wanted it anymore. She had on some long shorts that ended just below her knees and one of her baggy t-shirts today. "No T'ai Chi this morning?" he asked her. She shook her head no and said that with Kira and George due any minute that she was just going to skip it today. She passed him the sealed thermoses under the overhead cabinets and he slid them over to the living room side of the counter. She started to move out from behind the alcove. He could see that her size was starting to be a problem for her in such a little area and when she brushed her side against the counter passing it she winced a bit. Derek asked her if the baby was kicking her again, but she just shook her head no and told him that her sides were just sore from the pregnancy and not to worry about it. They heard a truck engine pull up outside. Derek got up to look out the window and said that they were here. He stowed the coffee and tea in a bag and then helped her down the steps to walk over to where Kira had stopped her truck. These two had a thing for Chevy's he thought. Kira's truck was newer and she had a crew cab instead, but he could see that she shared Jenny's preference in this regard. The black woman had the window down and was leaning out of it as they walked up. She greeted them and asked if they were ready. Derek said hi to her and the older man inside and passed the bag with the thermoses in to her. That must be George he thought. He turned back to Jenny and asked her if that was all she had. She nodded yes and Derek opened the door and helped her into her seat before going around to get in the other side. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- George watched them come over to the truck cab just after they pulled up. "Damn she's gotten big," he said to Kira. "You sure she can do this?" he asked her. Kira looked over to him in the early morning light and said that she could just ride along if she wasn't up for more than that. She rolled down the window, leaned out and greeted them. When the bag with the coffee in it was handed to her, she passed it over to George and he stowed it between the metal feet of his prosthetics. The door opened and that Derek guy helped her climb up into the crew cab. He knew that this woman was James inside, but seeing her like this gave him more than a bit of mental collision at the same time. He murmured good morning to her and told her that she was looking good this morning and the truth was that even with how much she had physically changed since he had seen her last; she did look good. George thought that she looked a lot happier and more settled than the brittle woman who had stepped into Danny and Sam's kitchen a little over four months ago to tell the family that she was pregnant. George heard the door behind him open and felt the truck shift slightly as the man she was with got in. George half turned around in his seat and offered him his hand. Derek told him it was good to meet him too and then he turned back around as Kira put the truck into gear and drove down the road. The traffic across the top of the Dam was light at this hour. There was a thin scattering of lake fog hanging just over the water now, but that would burn off once the sun warmed thing up. George asked Kira where they were going launch from and she said that Turner's Landing was probably their best bet considering. Derek leaned forward and asked where that was. Kira told him it was on the far side of the lake and from there they could get to where she was thinking of taking them today. George asked Derek if he had ever been on the lake before and heard him reply that he hadn't gone there to fish before, but he had been to the swimming area on the west side a few times over the years. Turner's Landing was on the south east side of the lake. It was just past the dam so even with the check point on both sides after they got across, it was only a few minutes before they pulled into the big parking lot. George watched Kira back the boat up to the ramp sloping into the water behind them. Jenny and Derek had gotten out and Jenny was having Derek relay directions to help Kira back the boat into the water. When the trailer slipped under the water enough for the boat to start floating free. She and Derek used the guide lines to hold it still, while Kira started cranking it off of the trailer. They drifted it back completely off the rollers and tied it up to the dock. Kira and Derek started transferring gear into the boat while George and Jenny waited on them. George heard Jenny asking Kira if she wanted her to go and get some stuff from the bait shop while the two of them were setting things up. She nodded yes and told Jenny to just get Kira what she always used. George opened up the passenger door and grabbed his canes. "Hold up," he said, "I'll come too." He and Jenny started slowly walking over to the bait shop. George could hear James in her voice. It was Sonya's voice speaking, but as they caught up while they were going through the shop he could tell that even with her pregnancy and all of the other changes that she had passed through, that this was still the same person that he had grown up with. George didn't know quite what to think when Kira had laid out this trip earlier this week. He was looking forward to it more than she knew, but he wasn't quite sure about what it was that Kira and Dianne were interested in finding out when they asked him if he would give them his opinion of how things were between Jenny and Derek when they got back. They had been kind of quiet about that, wanting him to make his own judgment. He did know that he was sick of people pitying him. He figured that if he sat down and talked this over with Jenny sometime, just the two of them, she would understand much more than the others could. As far as George was concerned this was not as bad as it could have been. It probably would have surprised the others to know that if George had had a choice he would have considered what happened to him easier than what had happened to Jenny every time. It hadn't been that long since he had finished his last tour in Afghanistan. And after he had left for good he looked at every day after as a bonus that he didn't expect to have in the first place. As for losing his legs, he'd already expected having something like that to happen to him while he was in country a strong possibility and having it come to him this way was just a detail. As far as he was concerned he was going to do what he already planned to do before, the only change was now he just had to be a little more careful about how he did it. As for Jenny he really didn't know what to expect at all. She had surprised him when she had started dressing the way she had right after she got back. He hadn't seen that one coming at all. And when the others started talking about this Derek character he didn't really know what to make of that either. But so far all he was seeing was Jenny and what looked like a close friend. He would admit that the two of them seemed awfully close for only being around each other for just a few weeks, but under the circumstances that wasn't really that surprising to him when he thought about it. Jenny carried most of what they had picked up back to the dock. George was still having to use a pair of canes to walk with, but he managed to suspend one of the lighter bags from the grip and maintain his balance. He started telling Jenny about grandma starting to see some guy at work the last week or so. Nothing much really, just them having lunch and George thought that they might have been out on one date, but he wasn't sure about that. Grandma was kind of keeping a lid on it for right now. He could tell that Jenny was a little surprised by it and when they were handing the bags to Kira to put in the boat she asked Kira why she hadn't given her a heads up about it. Kira told her that she wasn't going to say anything until grandma said there was something to say. She called George a blabbermouth, but George knew that was just Kira being Kira and shrugged it off. Her and Derek helped him and then Jenny into the boat. Once they were seated, Kira cast off the boat lines and coiled them on the deck. She started up the engine and they slowly pulled away from the dock. George looked toward the back bench. Derek and Jenny were sitting close together. As the wind started to pick up from Kira throttling up he saw her shift a little closer to him against the chill of the increased breeze. "Did you get me minnows or worms?" Kira asked over the sound of the engine. "Both," Jenny shouted back at him. "I figured that you and Derek could share. Where we going today?" she asked. "Over by Bomb Island," Kira called back and turned the prow of the boat in that direction. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bomb Island was in the center of the lake. It had been used as a practice target by the Army Air Force during World War Two. There had never been any explosives used on it, but the waters around there were littered with the heavy practice bombs that had hit the lake and couldn't be recovered. Kira loved coming here, all of those clumps of dummy bombs on the lake bottom made excellent structure for them to fish over. George watched her throttle down as they got close to one of her spots and then cut the engine. Jenny moved to one side and Derek got up walking very carefully out of Kira's path while balancing against the rocking of the boat. Kira raised the engine and dropped the trolling motor into the placid water of the lake. She asked Derek if he would help her set up the swivel seat on the front deck. While they were doing that George watched Jenny. Usually she was the one Kira asked on these trips to do the set up, but right now she was just sitting. He could really see why though. She was as off balance right now as he thought she would be. Now that the boat was no longer moving she had put on a wide brimmed floppy beach hat to shade her from the sun and was watching Kira and Derek. George didn't see her doing very much fishing today. It wasn't just the swell of the babies pushing her belly out so much, it was also the rest of her changes. The weight she had gained had widened her all over as her body met the demands of the growing infants inside her. Her whole body had broadened now. Her legs were still thin, but they had noticeably thickened in her upper thighs. Her sides had rounded out as well. The increase in the size of her breasts also was throwing her balance off. When they were getting supplies in the shop, he had noticed that she was starting to lean back while she walked, compensating for the increasing size of her belly. There was no way she would be fishing today in any way that didn't involve sitting down, she was too off balance. Kira started handing over rods and tackle to them. Usually she wouldn't do as much as she was doing this trip, but with both of them too off balance; Jenny from her pregnancy and George from his legs, Kira just made what needed to happen, happen. Derek moved carefully past George back to where Jenny was sitting. He asked her if she was going to fish and she said no and that she was just going to hang out near him and give him a hand if he wanted it. Kira had already baited her rig and made her first cast. George sent his over a patch of weeds and started jigging it back to the boat. "So how do you want to do this?" Jenny asked Derek. Derek said he really didn't know what she meant. She asked him if he wanted to use live bait or lures since he really hadn't fished this way before. Derek gave her a wry smile and told her that he really didn't know what he was doing. When he had gone before, all he had used was a worm on the hook. She clucked her tongue at him and told him he would have to learn to do better if he was going to be with this crew from now on. "Kira over there," she said as Kira made another long cast. "She favors live bait mostly, but she'll switch to crank baits mostly if she doesn't get any action. George now," she said nodding to him "George is the one who uses all of the spinner baits." George tipped his head in her direction. "They work and they're fun to use, I told you that before," he said back to her, "I'll set you up with the rig I use then," she said to Derek, reaching into the tackle box. Derek watched her pull one of the big pink plastic worms out of a package and start putting the lure together with the hook buried in the plastic and a bullet weight at the head to hold it down. She cast it into the water and let it sink to the bottom. George watched her hand the rod to Derek and begin talking him through what he needed to do to bounce it off of the bottom effectively. After he stopped rushing it back to the boat and started to get the hang of it, she started talking with George while giving Derek pointers. George had already gotten a strike, but it was too small to keep, so it was already back in the water. Kira was slowly moving the boat along the shoreline of the island with the foot control of the trolling motor from up at the bow seat. She and George were talking about what he was going to do now that he was out of the wheelchair. Derek was listening to them while he concentrated on doing what she had been telling him to do. When he heard George start telling her about how he was still going to run the Boston Marathon as soon as he could start training for it he had to look over to the older man. Derek didn't think that he would have had it in him to attempt that if he had ended up like George. He was so distracted listening to them that he was caught a little off guard when his line snapped taut from the bass strike. Jenny turned back to him and started coaching him through it. When he landed it, she freed it from the hook, dropped it into the live well and talked him through setting up his rig again before resuming his casting. George could see that she had a lot of her focus on Derek, she kept up their conversation, but most of her time was spent walking him through what he needed to do. From snippets of the two of them talking there were a lot of things that they said that jumped out at him in a good way. Kira was right. This was a different Jenny. More at ease with herself. And especially at ease with this man she was speaking with in such a comfortable, familiar fashion. George was reminded, as he watched her walk Derek through the different steps, of when she went over them with him when he was a kid. He could see her using that same level of patient coddling with Derek until it wouldn't be needed by him anymore. George leaned back in his padded chair and asked Kira what she thought about resuming the trail once he finished the Marathon and Jenny had her babies. Kira said she was already looking into it and started reeling in the fish that had hit her bait. George turned back to Jenny. Kira was right he thought again. Those two were too close to just be buddies, even if they denied it. If he was just a casual observer he would have been certain that they were a couple already. He was going to watch Derek the rest of the trip. He had all he thought he needed to know about them together, now he wanted to know about him. It seemed to Jenny that they caught a lot more this trip. When she mentioned this, Kira said it probably had something to do with not so much pressure on the local fish population since the Shift. When the conversation turned back to what Kira was looking at doing when they resumed walking the Appalachian trail, Jenny suggested that Derek join them, if he could get away from the coffee shop long enough to do it. Kira said that she didn't mind and asked George what he thought. He didn't have any objections but he made sure that Kira caught the glance he sent in her direction when Jenny suggested it. When they finally decided to wind down the trip they went through their catch and threw back all but about a good half dozen to keep when they went back. Those stayed in the live well for the trip back home. Derek suggested that they head over to his place since he had a bit more space there. They decided to leave Kira's rig at Jenny's and take her truck there. When they made the swap, Jenny slipped into Derek's jeep while George and Kira followed them. On the way to his house Derek stopped for a couple of pizzas and some beer. It was a short delay and they were back on their way before long. When they pulled into the driveway of his house Jenny looked over to him in the driver's seat. "You lied to me," she said, "this place is in no way on the way past my house." "It is for me," he said getting out of the Jeep. It was still a bit warm out after they finished the pizza. They sat on the porch and talked while making their way through the twelve pack that Derek had picked up. Jenny started on one. When Kira shot her a look, she told her that one beer wasn't going to hurt. It wouldn't have mattered anyway. Derek noticed that she didn't drink too much of the one she had. She said that it just didn't taste right and left it half finished. Derek excused himself after a while and went inside. He came out a few minutes later with his guitar and a pair of bongo drums. Kira told him that he probably didn't want to give those drums to Jenny since rocks had more musical ability than she did. Jenny flipped him a bird while George nodded agreement. George watched Derek hand Jenny the drums, he already knew it was a mistake, but he kept his tongue. Let Derek find out on his own just how bad it was going to be. He was just going to sit back and watch the show. He had a comfortable warm feeling from the beer and he knew what was coming even if Derek didn't. He thought that Derek played pretty well, he wouldn't be up on a stage anytime soon, but he seemed comfortable with what he was doing and was enjoying himself. After Jenny murdered the drums he stopped and looked at her. "They're right," he said to her, "you are awful." "At least she didn't sing," Kira said. "Her singing has been known to make cats throw shoes at her to make her stop." Jenny handed the drums to Kira and told her to do better if she could, but it was an empty gesture. Jenny knew she was awful and moreover really didn't care. She was comfortable with it and just owned it. Derek said he had an idea and ducked back in the house. He came back a few minutes later and handed her a pair of spoons. When she asked him what she was supposed to do with these he took a few minutes to show her how to play them and even though she was still awful it kind of worked with what they were doing. George watched them some more. Derek seemed like a pretty good guy from what he could see. He wasn't trying to suck up to Jenny or talk down to her and he gave her just as much shit as she gave him. He was starting to like the guy and he realized that the two of them seemed to fit together pretty naturally. George decided that he was comfortable with that and spent the rest of the evening belting out bawdy songs to go along with the general screwing around that they were doing. When it was time to call it quits for the night, Derek suggested that George stay here at his place and he run him over to Jenny's in the morning. It made sense to all of them. It would be easier for George here than trying to squeeze into the trailer or the pop-up camper. They thanked him for doing that and Jenny and Kira got into her truck and headed back to her place. George followed Derek into his house after Kira drove away. Derek showed him the spare room and went to get George something besides the single sheet over the mattress to sleep on. While he was taking his prosthetics off, Derek and he were talking about today. George told him that he hoped that Derek didn't feel too left out during their time on the lake, most of the conversation there had been between Kira, George and Jenny. Derek told him that it really hadn't been a bother to him. He told him that he liked being around her family when they were down to visit her. He said that anyone could see that they were a close knit bunch and he just appreciated the offer they had given him to spend time with her today while they were here. George didn't mention anything about the way that he phrased that and it pretty much matched what he saw between them. He also saw pretty clearly when it was time to leave that Jenny was noticeably reluctant to go. She kept bringing up a lot of different things with each of them until Kira finally got her into the truck and on their way. He shifted around on the bed and went to sleep after a few minutes. The trip had tired him out more than he had let on to them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Year 1 A.S. Day 127 They headed back home after getting something for breakfast at Bob's. Jenny had rode again with Derek in his jeep and after Kira and George got into Kira's truck to start heading back they watched her and Derek walk together slowly to Java Jolts at the end of the strip mall. She was walking close to him, she was not touching him in any way, but you could see her being drawn physically close to him as they made their way to the coffee shop. Kira carefully pulled the boat onto the road and started heading towards the highway. "So what did you think?" she asked him. George looked over at her. "I think they fit each other pretty good," he said. "And I see what you and Dianne were saying about how much better she is now. She's still the person she was before, but she is just so much more comfortable being herself now. I'm happy for her." "What about her and Derek?" she asked checking the mirror as she changed lanes. "Oh, they're together all right," he said. "They may not call it that, but they have everything else that matters going on between them. And I think being his girlfriend makes her a lot happier than she knows it does." "So you see it too?" Kira asked. George nodded. "Yeah, I do, but for the life of me I don't see how it's in any way a bad thing. I think she needs him and not just in a drive me around someplace way. I like him and I think that them being with each other works for both of them. I hope when she figures out what it really is that she doesn't try to back off." "Me neither," Kira said, "me neither."

Wish Shift The Wind in Her Hair

Wish Shift: Chapter Twenty The Wind in Her Hair Year 1 A.S. Day 112 Jenny was sitting outside at her usual table when she finished up at the institute. It was getting pretty hot, but there had been a nice wind blowing today so she just decided to walk to Java Jolts instead of calling Derek to let him know that she had finished a little earlier than she expected to. She had seen when Mindy had ducked back into the office to let Derek know when she sat down out front and he was out...

Wish Shift Reactions

Wish Shift: Chapter Seven Reactions Year 1 A.S. Day 45 Kira saw Jenny's big black truck pull up outside the restaurant. Bob's Country Kitchen was a small local chain that specialized in quick lunches, but served breakfast and dinner as well. The menu was a regular rotation of specials with a standard menu that didn't vary much. Between the prices and the general quality it had been a successful enterprise for the family that owned it. They had decided that they would meet there...

Wish Shift Dreamscapes

Wish shift: Dreamscapes 1 A.S. Day? The first thing I noticed was the reek all of the flowers. The smell of them made the air noxious with their scent. It surrounded me and seemed like it was impregnating even my clothes. It was in my hair and lingered like a thick blanket in my nose and mouth. It was sweet and warm. I could feel soft satin covering me entirely except for my hands. My fingers are bare. I wondered where it came from. I didn't own anything in satin. But it's here now,...

Wish Shift: Chapter Forty-Three Epilogue Year 1 A.S. Three Months later February Jenny held Sonya while Derek was holding Sammy. Both of them were sleeping right now, but she wouldn't put it past either of them to wake up at any moment. Kira and Dianne were standing together in their wedding dresses just to their left. Jenny had never thought that she would ever be a bridesmaid, but she had never thought that she would be a wife or a mother either just over a year ago. She...

"Just take a slow step, you can do it J.L." Jenny was across from him sitting in a chair on the other side of the exercise room that they had set up to work with their charges. Wish Shift When Shadows Burn

Wish Shift: Chapter Thirty-Seven When Shadows Burn Year 1 A.S. Day 192 Day 237 of Jenny's pregnancy Brother Paul kept driving past Derek's home. Derek's jeep was there parked under the carport, but it was the other car there that made him abandon stopping in as an option. He fumed as he drove down the road. Who could that possibly be that was there? And why were they here now of all times? He sensed the hand of the devil in this and considered that he might have to call Brother...

Wish Shift A Woman Named Amy

Wish Shift: Chapter Thirty-Three A Woman Named Amy Year 1 A.S. Day 170 Amy had a busy day. They had left the camp earlier this morning and gotten on the road to go home. The other ladies there had gathered around her before they left, to pray the Lord strengthen her and her husband, as they ventured out into the world of the tribulation. It would not truly be safe for the Lord's people yet, but it had to be done. While she and her sisters in faith prayed, Joshua had gathered with...

Wish Shift: Chapter Eleven Zai Jian Year 1 A.S. Day 58 Night Jenny sat in her room. She had taken all of the clothing that she would not be wearing anymore and piled it on the bed. She reached for the first empty box and started to fold pants and t-shirts and carefully put them away. It was quiet now. Mom and grandma had already gone out the pop-up to go to sleep. She was by herself now, there was only the light in the room and the darkness outside her window to keep her...

Wish Shift Crossing the Rubicon

Wish Shift: Chapter Nineteen Crossing the Rubicon Year 1 A.S. Day 103 Bob's was a little bit busy this morning for a Thursday. Derek had picked Jenny up at her house at the regular time for her appointment, but they still had more than an hour or so to kill when they walked into the restaurant. Bob waved to Jenny and Derek as they came in the door, but he didn't come over. There were too many people cycling through the place at the moment. Jenny was pretty sure that if he got a...

Jenny quickly dialed Derek and talked to him for a few minutes and then hung up. "Derek can't come," she said obviously disappointed. "He can't get away from the shop today. If you had given us more notice he probably could have," she said turning back to packing her beach bag. Kira glanced at Dianne. She'd noticed the us in that sentence...

"It was your grandmother who pointed it out to me," he said after Jenny's tears ceased and she calmed down again. Wish Shift Pathways

Wish Shift: Chapter Eight Pathways Year 1 A.S. Day 46 Jenny heard the car pull into her lot in the dim glow of light just before dawn. She had been up until almost midnight the night before and had needed to rush to the toilet sometime in the early morning hours to deal with a bout of morning sickness. Those had been coming less frequently this last week and she was starting to hope that she may be close to parting ways with this particular aspect of being a woman soon. Leaning...

Wish Shift: Adjustments 1 A.S. Day 147 When Derek got out of the shower, he was still half in amazement at Jenny. He toweled himself dry and wrapped the damp towel around himself. He figured he might as well make the bed after he put some clothes on. He really wanted to do something nice for Jenny today, but right now he couldn't think of what it should be. He found himself thinking about what she had told him about Sonya and that brought him back to last night and what she said to...

Wish Shift : Chapter Ten Tabula Rasa Year 1 A.S. Day 56 Before they went to Dr. Waverly's, Kira and Dianne took her to get a couple of new sets of clothes. Jenny had already apologized to them for being angry with how they reacted to her risking herself and the twins, but there were still some dark feelings swimming around them. She was still out of sorts herself as well. She was wearing the last of her inherited bras and in the last couple of days it had been much too tight for...

Wish Shift: Chapter Thirty-Nine The Fire That Burns You Year 1 A.S. Day 209 Day 254 of Jenny's pregnancy Sleep was constantly avoiding coming to her. Between her now frequent trips to the bathroom, the movement of the twins and the pain from the various parts of her body, it was a wonder that she got any sleep at all. And that was before she even factored in the emotional toll of the last few days. The rage that had been released when the full scope of what had been done to...

Part One The Winter of her Heart Wish Shift: Chapter One Reunions 1 A.S. Day 32 She was still trying to sleep. It wasn't her first international trip. The problem was, even with all of the shades down on the windows, you could still see the outline of daylight around them. But considering what made that extra room...

He had striven for the impression of a manager's office rather than something more exalted like the head of a corporation. The Great Shift Togetherness

The Great Shift: Togetherness By Ran Dandel It was always good to close the agency in the evening and start to unwind. Most days weren't too bad, but this one was a doozy. Since deregulation, the airlines had gone to central hubbing of their flights. It made making itineraries quite a hassle. Especially since many of the feeders arrived very close to the departure times of the main airlines'. Of course, being a travel agent wasn't all bad. After all, if you were able to make...

The Great Shift The Theater Experience

The Great Shift: The Theater Experience by Brad Miller I was talking to my friend Sarah on the phone. We were discussing plans to go to the movies later today. Sarah was such a sweet girl. People were always saying that we should hook up, which is something I wouldn't mind doing, but she's not attracted to me. I really like her. I like her a lot. I mean I've met some girl in my life but if there's anyone I like the most its Sarah. We can talk on the phone for hours about nothing....
