The Wind in Her Hair
Year 1 A.S. Day 112
Jenny was sitting outside at her usual table when she finished up at the
institute. It was getting pretty hot, but there had been a nice wind
blowing today so she just decided to walk to Java Jolts instead of
calling Derek to let him know that she had finished a little earlier than
she expected to. She had seen when Mindy had ducked back into the office
to let Derek know when she sat down out front and he was out in a few
minutes to check on her.
She had a pained look on her face when he came out the door.
"You ok?" he asked her a little concerned. He hadn't seen her make a face
like that before. She stretched her neck up a little with her teeth bared
and looked down at her belly. "Quit it you kids," she said to her belly.
She looked up at Derek. "I'm fine, really," she said. "One of the kids
decided to use my insides for a football is all. They started doing it
earlier this week and they haven't quit since."
"So is it Sonya or the other one?" he asked.
"I'm beginning to suspect that when it's here, it's probably Sonya," she
said.
She winced a second time and told her belly to quit it again.
Derek sat down. "You haven't told me that much about her. I wish you
would," he said. "I got some time if you want to. That is, if you feel
like it."
"Yeah," she said. "I can do that. You told me all about you, so it's only
fair I suppose. Can I get a tea?"
"Sure," he said. "Gimme a minute and I'll be right back."
Even though the people who usually drifted in after lunch were not there
yet, she could see that things were going to get busy soon. There would
be the staff from the hospital across the main road of course, as well as
everyone who worked in the Medical park that stretched around them coming
in as well. There would be family and out-patients stopping by both here
and at Bob's. The long parking lot that stretched oblong in front of the
little strip mall was going to get crowded soon.
And then there were the regulars that were always there. When Derek said
that he would have a few minutes, he was probably being literal, even if
he was trying to make time for her. She noticed that he had hired someone
else as well in the last couple of weeks. Ever since he had taken over
shuttling her around to where she needed to go to and some of the places
she wanted to go. She knew that if they hadn't gotten so close as friends
and he hadn't given over so much of his time to her that he probably
wouldn't have done that.
The new barista was a thirteen year old girl named Jamaal. She only
worked evenings and on weekends usually. She was a pretty Korean-American
girl almost as petite as Jenny. She had seen Jenny when she came in her
first day to start training and couldn't take her eyes off of her. Jenny
had to admit that she had spent a bit of time taking more than one look
back. Jamaal was the only one she had seen recently that was almost as
small as herself. But from the big eyes that she made Jenny figured that
her reaction was probably more related to seeing how pregnant Jenny was
already and imagining that it was her instead.
Jenny didn't think that Jamaal liked that idea much because she could see
her shuddering after she did that. Jenny didn't blame her. If she was in
Jamaal's place she would have done the same thing. "Not yet doll," she
said to herself watching Mindy going over how to do something with her
while Derek was making her tea. "Your turn'll come though," she said to
herself and winced as she felt the babies kick again.
Derek came back outside with Jenny's tea and saw her watching Mindy and
Jamaal. "What's her story?" she asked him.
"She was a linebacker on an athletic scholarship when it happened," he
said. "After the Shift, when she got some things sorted out she found out
that she had lost her scholarship."
They watched her and Mindy fill a couple of orders and hand them to the
customers to go. The door opened and a waft of the air conditioning
inside passed over them before the door closed.
"So what's she going to do? Besides work here I mean," she asked.
"She's back in classes now. The university has suspended asking for
payment for tuition for the time being. She's using the chance to build
up enough of a cushion for when they have things sorted out on a more
permanent basis. Besides she's going to my old alma mater and I had to
give her the job. You know school connection and all that," he said
looking back in at them before turning back to her.
That was one of the more recent changes that Jenny had approved of. There
was a big push from the government to try to restore some degree of
normalcy ever since the Shift had occurred. So much of the Armed Forces
had been withdrawn, except for carefully chosen cadres that were still
capable of serving, back within the national borders to maintain order
and return citizens home.
Without having to spend so much on that, there was a shift in priorities
to stabilizing everything here first that doing things like what had been
done for people like Jamaal were suddenly possible. It's not that the
world had suddenly calmed down, but with other more important concerns,
so many of the big international brushfires were now banked for the time
being. Jenny figured that they would be coming back sometime or other,
but she was grateful for now that they were quiet.
She looked over at Jamaal again. "She has hair like Sonya did," she said
to Derek. Derek looked over at the black haired girl again. Her hair was
gathered into a pony tail at the nape of her neck and hung down thick
like black silk to halfway between her shoulder blades and her buttocks.
"So where did you meet her?" he asked.
"Jamaal? Right here when she first started," Jenny said looking back at
him.
"No, Sonya. Where did you meet Sonya?" he asked.
"Standing in line at the bank a couple of months after I got the job in
Shenzhen," I was short of money and had my brother wire some to me to
tide me over. She was standing behind me. She said she wanted to ask me
about some things, so we talked for the rest of the time that we were in
line until it was my turn. After that, I waited for her to do what she
was there for and we spent the next three or four hours talking," Jenny
said.
A short convoy of four military vehicles still painted in desert colors
passed by on the road in front of the hospital. It must be time for the
changing of the guard Jenny thought. The National Guard camp was just
down the road in a high school football field.
"That must have been some conversation," Derek said watching them go
past.
"You know I really don't remember what we talked about exactly," Jenny
said. "But I do remember that I didn't want to be anywhere else and I
couldn't wait until I called her again after work the next day."
"So what happened then?" Derek asked her.
"We spent every day together unless we were at work. Sometimes I'd get
home the first few days and just as I was reaching for my phone to call
her, there she would be, already on the line for me. She'd ask me to meet
her somewhere and the first time I got so lost doing it I thought that I
might not make it back to where I was living at."
"Was the city really that big there?" he asked. Two or three cars slowed
down and turned into the parking lot. One pulled into the space right in
front of them and the others went further down and went into Bob's.
"There are bigger ones there, but that one was big enough for me," she
said. She looked over at the city center in the distance, but it was not
the same at all. There were only a few skyscrapers clustered there in the
distance and there was so much greenery between here and there that it
looked like they were outside of the city rather than in it.
"So what happened?" he asked.
"I called her up and told her how utterly lost I was. Then she started
playing with me," she said. She smiled as she thought of that. She had
really not expected that aspect of Sonya, that she could be playful that
way.
"How do you mean play?" Derek asked curious as to what she meant.
"She told me to take a taxi to this big shopping mall. She had me give
the phone to the driver for directions and when I got there she started
playing tag with me," she said.
"What do you mean Tag?" he asked.
"She'd give me a clue and I had to find her," Jenny remembered hunting
for her up and down the different floors and trying to figure out just
which store she meant while weaving in between the crowd that was moving
in every direction on each floor.
"And did you?" he asked her.
"No, but I ran into her by accident when she was changing stores. She
thought it was funny. I thought it was cute at first but after four or
five misses I was starting to not like doing this with her."
"I can see that," he said watching another pair of cars come in and head
over to Bob's.
"She made it up to me though," she said. "That was the first night we
spent together and we didn't separate for the next four days except for
when we had to go to work."
"Now that sounds pretty intense," he said.
"It was," she said. "She was practically living there after that and I
didn't want her to be anywhere else," she also hadn't wanted to leave the
bed any more than James had wanted to, but she had no intention of
sharing that detail with Derek.
"She didn't move in with me officially until about two months later
though, even if we were together most of the time. She was living with a
friend of hers in a small apartment splitting their expenses. I met her
right away. Her name was Dou. She was a real nice woman, but I didn't see
her that often when we first started going out."
"Did you ever meet her family?" he asked having a quick look inside the
shop to check on how Jamaal and Mindy were doing. They looked like they
were fine, so he let them handle it for now.
"Some of them. I went to dinner with her uncle and her a few times and
her sister and niece came to stay with us several times, but I didn't
meet her parents."
"Why not? I would have thought that as close as you're talking about that
she would have wanted you to do that," he said thinking about what aunt
Dina would probably be saying to him right now if she were here.
"Her family was kind of traditional," she said. "Meeting the parents for
them was a serious step."
"How serious?" he asked.
"For where she was from there, meeting her parents would have been a
declaration to them that we wanted to get married," she said thinking
about the discussion that she and Sonya had after James had found out why
he had not been taken to see her parents after they started dating, even
though he had introduced his to her on Skype.
"That's pretty serious," he agreed.
"That's why I was meeting other members of her family like that. I didn't
know that at the time. She told me later though and I agreed with her
that meeting them was something that we should put off for now," Jenny
said. "After what happened there were more than a few times that I wish
we had done it sooner."
"So you did meet them then?" he asked.
"We were making plans to do that just before the Shift hit," she said.
"She had already called them to let them know we both were coming to see
them during the next holiday so they were expecting us already," As she
answered she thought of how Sonya was putting so much effort into
organizing their trip just before it happened. She was going to go and
pay for the train tickets the next morning. Their lovemaking that night
had been in a way a celebration of the step that was coming next.
"So what did you do there?" he asked.
"Before I got together with her, I pretty much stayed close to home. I'd
go out and there were things that I could do still, but after I started
being with her, everything just opened up for both of us," she said
thinking about the difference in how she lived before she met Sonya.
"How do you mean opened up?" he asked.
"Well for one thing she was my voice," she said. "If we needed to do
anything that involved speaking she was the one to do it. But that was
just the beginning."
"How?" he said.
"Now when I went out, if I didn't understand something I asked her and
she filled me in. Now it was kind of fun before. I'd tell stories to
myself while I was out about what people were doing but I really didn't
know. After that I did," she said.
"Did you ever tell her some of those stories?" he asked listening
closely.
"Sometimes when we went out walking in the evenings I'd tell her a story
based on what I saw and when we turned around to head back she would tell
me what she knew from overhearing people talking. Sometimes I even got it
right. Not the words of course, but the meaning of it," she said
wondering if she should mention some of those stories that she had made
up on the spot to someone. Even though she was way off base more often
than not Sonya had thought some of them were pretty funny.
"Did you go out often like that?" he asked.
"Almost every night. A lot of people do that there, they don't stay home
as much as people here do. That was kind of surprising to me." She looked
at the empty streets around them. Even with martial law relaxed there was
still a lot of emptiness there and she found herself missing the bustle
of the crowded streets she had lived in before. She couldn't help
contrasting it with what she remembered. She thought about calling Hong
and asking him how close to normal things there had returned to next time
that they talked.
"Then there were the times she liked going out for KTV," she said.
"What's KTV?" he asked.
"That's one of the really popular activities there. You go to this
business that runs it and rent a whole room with TV's and sound system
and you just stay the rest of the night there eating and drinking and
singing. It's like a karaoke bar here, but it's more than that," she
said.
"Did you ever sing?" he asked.
"More than she did. I was ok but I would have liked to hear her sing more
often. Most of the time she just sat with her friends. She liked to
listen to others and just be there more than the singing itself."
The truth was that Sonya loved to sing, but she was so self-conscious
about it while she was doing it. It took three or four drinks to get her
loosened up enough to really cut loose and not care if she mangled
whatever she was singing. Not like James. James could murder a song with
the best of them and not show that he was embarrassed.
"Do you miss it?" he asked.
"I really do sometimes," she said. "I've been thinking about asking Dr.
Min to go out to do something like that but I don't think it would be the
same. I'll probably do it anyway though," Jenny wondered if Dr. Min would
do it though. She seemed to have poured herself completely into nothing
but her work even if she had been showing some cracks in her serious face
lately.
"So that thing I see you doing in the mornings? Did she teach you that
too?" he asked.
"T'ai Chi?" she said. "No, she didn't teach me that. She did get me
interested in it though. We used to go with a group of people most every
morning and practice with them. Now that is something that I miss doing.
I can do it by myself, but when you do it with others it's much more
focused and intense somehow."
"Did you guys go anywhere else?" he asked.
"We used to go to this beach across the harbor from Hong Kong a lot. It
was close by and the summer was really hot, so we went there constantly.
But even if she did that every day she wouldn't have wanted to get a tan.
She was pretty fanatical about not getting dark. She'd spread on the
highest level sun block she could lay her hands on when we would go," she
said, although actually Sonya had gotten the higher blocking formulas
from James when he visited home and brought them to her when she found
out that she couldn't buy them there.
Derek looked at Jenny. "I don't see how that would be a problem, don't
take this wrong, but I think you would look pretty good with a bit of a
tan."
"I told her the same thing," she said, but for her it was a cultural
thing, they don't like tanning like we do here." She shrugged and drank
some of her cooling tea. "Maybe I'll see about getting one later on," she
said.
"Any place further than that?" he looked back to the highway. The guard
must be changed, the four vehicles were heading back to their bivouac
down by the high school.
"We took a fast train up north once. There were a party of her friends
that set the trip up. We went up to a place just outside of Beijing and
went skiing with them," she said, thinking of that trip. The train had
been so much nicer and quicker than she had expected. She would have
liked to do that here sometime in the future.
"I've never been skiing," he said. "How was it?"
"Well I didn't know what I was doing and I never left the beginner's
section, but I had a great time even if I ended up sliding down on my ass
and eating snow more times than I spent doing it even halfway right. If I
ever go again I think I'd go for snowboarding instead. I think I would
have had better luck with that. But it was fun either way."
"Did you stay long?" he asked.
"We stayed a little while and after we finished with the slopes there we
did some sightseeing. Went to the Great Wall, saw some of the tourist
sites in Beijing. It was a fun trip," she didn't mention to Derek just
how much her legs had been shaking after that visit. Some of the roadway
on the top of the wall had gone up sheer angles and you had to take it
slow so you wouldn't go tumbling down.
"Sounds like it," he said.
"You know what I remember most about it though?" she said.
"What?" he asked.
"It was her hair. She never did much with it when we were together. Sure
she styled it and she got real creative with what she did, but she never
cut it more than she had to. And when we would do things like this. I
could always see her no matter where she was. I'd see the wind pick up
her hair and blow it around her face like a cloud and I'd just stop and
watch it. It didn't matter if she was wearing a hat when it happened or
just hanging free, it was the most beautiful thing about her that wasn't
inside of her."
"I can see that," Derek said looking at her and then turning away to look
back into the coffee shop. More people were coming in now. He'd have to
go back in soon. Bob's little end of the parking lot was already almost
full and soon the cars would be spilling this way.
He turned back to Jenny. "Did you ever try to take her here with you?"
"I tried about three years ago," she said. "They wouldn't give her a visa
so she had to stay behind when I went back that trip. I really wanted to
take her too. And when my brother got married the next year I decided
when I came back from that I would just stay there with her until there
was no way for her to be blocked from coming with me," she also had cried
for a while as well. She had really wanted to go with him, not so much to
see where James came from as to be with him while he was there.
"That's when I started making plans to visit her parents with her. I
already bought the ring and I was going to ask her when we visited them.
Everything was already in motion and then the Shift happened and it was
all over with before it began."
Jenny took another drink of her tea. "I still have the ring. I keep it in
its box back home. I didn't tell her that I already had it. I was going
to surprise her with it there and ask her parents the traditional way."
Derek looked around at the cars starting to come in and the people
heading for them. "It sounds like she meant everything to you," he said.
"She did," Jenny said looking down at her belly and wincing as the babies
kicked her again. A half a dozen people went into the shop and the air
conditioning passed over them again. It felt nice to her, the heat was
really starting to make her a little uncomfortable.
"They look like they're really active," Derek said.
She nodded. "They are," she placed her hand on her belly and began to rub
it in a slow circle. "I think they're making up for lost time." The
babies inside her kicked a few more times and then settled down as if
they could feel her rubbing them from outside.
She looked up after a couple of minutes of that. "But all of that still
doesn't change how things are now. It doesn't matter which one of these
babies has Sonya inside them. She is gone now, even if she remembers
everything she might as well be dead to me. We won't ever be together
like that again and we both have to live with it and wishing it were
otherwise won't change that."
The baby kicked again. "Settle down," she whispered and went back to
rubbing the slow circle on her belly.
Derek looked back in the shop and turned back to Jenny.
"So we should probably talk about what you have for next week sometime
today. Do you think that your family will be coming down later?"
"Probably," she said. The surprise would be if someone didn't in Jenny's
opinion.
Jenny sipped her tea before she answered him. "Look Derek. Maybe we
should just get a pizza after you close up and when we get to my place
tonight, we can go over what I have coming up for next week. I don't
think we can talk about that right now, you're getting pretty busy in
there."
"That's probably a good idea. Extra-large pepperoni ok?" he asked
starting to stand up to go inside.
Jenny looked back at him, her brow wrinkled in that way he thought was
cute when she was kicking around an idea. "Better make it two," she said
after a moment. "You might get some that way."
Derek could see the exact moment that she realized what she said. Her
eyes got real big and her mouth made an 'O' as she sucked in a breath. He
didn't know she could turn that red either, but she managed to bring a
full body blush to the table.
"You might get some pizza that way I mean," she said quickly and turned
her face away.
"I knew what you meant," Derek said forcing himself not to laugh at her
embarrassment.
"Go away," Jenny said covering her face with her hand. "I can't look at
you right now."
Derek shrugged and walked back into Java Jolts. Jenny kept hiding her
face. She thought she could hear Mindy laughing all the way from behind
the counter inside.
