Wish Shift: Chapter Five Examinations Year 1 A.S. Day 43 Dianne didn't arrive the next day, but she did show up the day after that. Sometime after four p.m., when Kira and Jenny were lighting the charcoal in the small portable grill, Kira's phone started ringing. While Jenny busied herself with using the hand cranked fan to get the coal bed well fired, Kira answered it and started laying out the directions to where they were. After they finished talking Kira told Jenny that Dianne would be here in under thirty minutes and she was going to take the truck to run and pick up another steak. Jenny started to protest that they had enough, but Kira's raised eyebrow made her realize that might not be the case considering her appetite over the last few days. Already some of the smaller size pants that she had brought back with her were becoming uncomfortably tight to wear. She realized that was another reason she found herself spending more and more time wearing the dresses she had favored when she got back. Certainly it was just as mom said to her when he made her face that unpleasant realization, but also because she realized that she had greater comfort wearing them as well. She went into the travel trailer and fished the keys out of her murse. She leaned out of the door and tossed them to Kira. As she ducked back in to pour herself some tea before going back to fanning the coals, she heard Kira shout that Dianne would call her if she had any problems finding the lot. She heard the truck's engine roar as Kira started it up and then pull away. Jenny looked over the coals when she came out, they were starting to burn hot enough that she didn't need to use the blower any more. She ducked back into the little kitchen area and started prepping potatoes. The olive oil and herbs were already soaking into the skins when she started lancing them with a fork. She had just finished wrapping them in aluminum foil when her phone started ringing. Wiping the oil off her fingertips, she answered and found that Dianne was closer than Kira estimated. She confirmed the directions Kira gave Dianne and told her that Kira would be back from the grocery soon. She leaned outside the doorway after hanging up and checked the coals. The fire was already starting to die down, but the flames were still too high for her to start the potatoes yet. She picked up her tea and the phone and went outside to sit in one of the folding camp chairs she kept with the trailer. She was just about to get up and get the potatoes and the other foil wrapped vegetables and put them on the grill when Dianne pulled into her lot space. She dropped the cover on the grill and walked over to help Dianne back the pop up camper into the space that she and Kira had left clear. It didn't take long to get it in position. The travel trailer was much more trouble to back up. After she dropped the stabilizer legs and adjusted their height, she started cranking the hitch off of the tow ball. Dianne pulled the car forward and parked in front of the travel trailer just under the tree that shaded the front half of Jenny's little home. As Dianne came toward her, Jenny had a moment's hesitation. Usually she greeted her sister-in-law with a warm hug before the Shift, but ever since she got back she had felt awkward doing so. The woman inside was the same, but the stranger's face made doing that still feel not quite right. She took a deep breath and mentally chastised herself. This was her sister-in-law, not some stranger. She had known her for over four years now. She told herself to stop being an inhospitable fool. Dianne's eyes widened a little at the embrace and after she pulled back a little to look at Jenny. "I have to say that is the warmest greeting you've given me since this whole thing started," she said. "I know," Jenny answered, "I'm sorry I didn't do it sooner." Dianne told her not to worry about it, but Jenny thought she detected something in her eyes that suggested that it was more than the right thing to do. She asked Dianne if she wanted some tea and when she nodded Jenny waved her inside after her. It was definitely starting to get pretty warm the last couple of days, but so far they had not had to extend the travel trailer's shade or turn on the small roof A/C unit. She handed Dianne a glass with ice sweat already trickling down the side, poured her some tea and started piling the potatoes on a plate to carry outside. Dianne insisted on helping her so it only took one trip instead of two. After the grill was loaded and the cover dropped down again Jenny pulled out another camp chair and they both settled in the shade to wait for Kira to come back. "So do you know how long they want you to stay down here?" she asked Jenny. "Nothing definite yet," Jenny replied. "All I know so far is that it will be longer than two months for certain." "Can you go that long without going back to work?" "I'd have to anyway," Jenny said. "Schools are going to be closed until at least the end of summer and when I called they could only take my application right now." "But don't worry about me," she said quickly, "I still haven't touched what I have in the bank here and they promised me enough of a per diem while I'm here to cover what I'm spending on this place. Plus I still have quite a bit that I brought back from Shenzhen with me." "Well I'm glad to hear that," Dianne said. "Even so, your mom and dad are both worried about you being down here." "Did they say if were coming down anytime soon?" "Your mom mentioned something about coming down around the time we have to be getting back, but I think your dad said she had to reopen the garage pretty soon." "So how long do you plan to stay?" "Tired of us already?" Dianne said in a lilting, mocking tone. And then added quickly, "Relax, I know you're not." "Kira and I are going to stay for about two weeks," she said. "I may have to get back sooner to work on George's case, but I'll try to stay as long as I can. I know that Kira took some vacation in addition to the time the bank is going to be closed, but she still needs to get back around that time." "What case do you have for George?" "Just came up, literally the day after you left," she said her brow darkening. "George got a letter from the VA basically telling him that they are cutting his disability back to what he had before the Shift." "What? Why the hell are they doing that?" "They are claiming that regardless of the outcome for him because of the Shift, his service records don't justify it," she said. "That is grade-A bullshit," Jenny spat angrily. "I agree," she said, "I would have taken this case pro bono even if George wasn't family. More importantly Judge Gillespie agreed with our petition and issued an injunction." "Nice to see someone in authority doesn't have cranial-rectal inversion." "What?" said Dianne. "His head up his ass," Jenny said, taking a deep drink of her tea. Dianne laughed. "I'll have to remember that one." "So how's it look?" Jenny said, dropping her glass into the pocket in the chair's armrest. "I think we have a good case. I argued in his petition that the result for George was only a matter of semantics. His injuries were caused by wounds sustained in combat. They were thoroughly documented and that the circumstances resulting from the Shift should not invalidate the nation's obligation. It should not make any difference that Paul Jacobs suffered the injury, George is the one who has to live with the consequences. He is as much a casualty now as he would have been if it happened to him during his time in either Iraq or Afghanistan." "Damn right he is," Jenny spat. "Excuse me," she said and flipped the lid of the grill open to rotate the potatoes and corn on the cob. When it was done she sat down again. "Do you think they will back down or dig in?" she asked taking another drink of her tea. "Oh they're gonna dig in," she said, "backing down sets an enormous precedent and they won't let that happen if they can avoid it. It's possible this may get kicked up all the way to the Supreme Court." "Shee-it," Jenny said dragging the word out, "not bad for a small town lawyer." She looked at Dianne. "You might have to take me on for the same reason you know. If they try this with George, I wouldn't be surprised if guys like me with small disabilities get wiped off the board as well." "I don't think you can Jenny, you shifted into Sonya and she never served. She wasn't even a U.S. citizen. It's completely different circumstances." "I'm not concerned about me, I'm thinking of what is probably my baby in my body right now. I'm pretty sure that some little bean counter is thinking that just because my kid started life with his ears ringing all the time that they would consider it normal since he always had it and that since he didn't serve, he can be cut." "That's something I hadn't even thought of, I was so focused on things with George I hadn't considered that aspect. I'll tell you what. You get anything like that, you bring it to me and I'll put it before Judge Gillespie. He was a Marine and he does not like it one bit when vets get screwed." "I'll keep you posted then," Jenny said looking up at the sound of a truck coming down the road. "Looks like Kira's back," she said. "We should get the pop up set up for you guys while she gets those steaks in the marinade." It turned out that it wasn't Kira, just another neighbor coming back from where ever. They settled back down to finish their tea. Dianne looked at Jenny. She looked like she had more on her mind than George's case. "Can I ask you something Jenny?" "Sure," Jenny said. She was really not sure, but being uncomfortable about so many aspects of yourself and others that had changed was starting to be a way of life the last few weeks. She hoped that mom was right, that eventually she would move past it. "I know you have a lot to deal with, we all do, but you seem like you are handling it so much better." "How do you mean?" Jenny asked, even though she was pretty sure she knew what Dianne was going to say. "I look at you and with all that's going on, the only ones that seem to be handling it as well are Little Jake and Grandma." "I wouldn't go that far," Jenny said quietly. "I've got just as many things hounding me as they do. And mom pointed out some things to me before I left; some things I needed to hear." "It doesn't look like it," she said. "You, Jake and...and Kira. Out of the three of you, you are the one who seems most comfortable with who you are now." "I'm not," she answered. "There is so much that you have no idea how not comfortable I am." "You may say that," she answered, "But you're looking more comfortable than you think. You are the only one that dresses the way you do. You're the only one wearing even a little makeup regularly. The only one using a purse. The only one making the effort it seems like to become what we used to think of as how a woman presents herself. Maybe I'm just stuck in thinking like before, but you're the most feminine changed man in the family. And I'm not saying that to bait you. I'm just surprised that you did it considering how masculine you were before." Jenny took a deep breath. Halfway through Dianne's talk she had started to feel flashes of anger. Initially she felt that she was being put down by compliment. She had been getting angry more often. The book she got said she could expect that from her changing hormones so she backed it down and took what Dianne was saying as she probably intended it. "Has mom talked with you about me?" she asked. "Yes, in general. He said that if I wanted anything more to talk with you myself. He's gotten a little guarded when talking about others since it happened." Jenny started telling her about the conversation that mom had with her. She didn't go into all of the details, but there was enough there for Dianne to go quiet over. She also decided to share with her the 'G' rated version of what happened to her during the Switch. She and Kira were married so they would in all likelihood have shared it sooner or later anyway. She was going to leave it in Kira's hands to do that, but since they were having this conversation she decided not to. When she finished talking Dianne looked at her. "That is such a lot to be carrying around inside. But that just makes me want to stand by what I said even more. You have all of that going on and you still are dealing with it better than any of them." "Maybe I am," Jenny said. "It doesn't feel like it though." "I still can't believe you had sex as a woman. Could you doing that so soon after it happened have anything to do with how you are adjusting as well as you have? "Maybe," Jenny answered. "But I think it's more because of this." She looked down at her belly. She now had a pronounced curve to her stomach. A month ago when she found out it was imperceptible. Now the swelling from the baby inside was becoming more obvious if you were looking at it. "It's harder to hold on to the idea of being the man you were, when morning sickness has you by the throat, or the baby kicks, or when you reach for a pair of jeans and find out that they don't close anymore because the baby inside you had a growth spurt in the last two days." "I do know that I'm a straight woman now. I look at women that I see and I know that before I would think of them as sexual partners or romantic partners or just women I wanted to get to know better, but I haven't done that once since then. Granted I've seen men looking at me and I haven't felt any response to anyone yet, but it doesn't bother me and I know I don't look at them the way I look at other women now." "Mom told me that I need to face the idea that I probably am going to be with someone else in the future, but since it happened I haven't done anything, not even with myself. The closest I've come to that lately is looking in the mirror and touching myself and telling myself that the woman I see there is me now." Kira and I have barely touched each other since it happened." "Do you want to?" Jenny asked. "I want to be with the person I fell in love with," she said. "It shouldn't matter, but to me it does. I love...Kira. But I just can't find it in myself to want her." "She loves you too. Desperately. She's terrified of losing you." "I know, I am too. But I don't know what to do." "Do you think you will have to separate?" "I don't want to. I really don't." "Then how far is it that both of you are willing to go to be together is what you have to come to terms with, not being straight," Jenny said quietly. The sound of a truck engine started coming closer. Jenny was pretty sure that this time it was Kira coming back. "I think there is just about anything I'd do to stay with Kira," she said. "Then do that," Jenny said as Kira pulled the black truck in beside Dianne's car. ------------------------------------------------------------ Year 1 A.S. Day 45 The sound of subdued knocking on her door around 6:30 didn't wake her up. Jenny was still getting up a little after five, so she figured that it was more a warning that Kira or Dianne were coming in. She hollered at them to come in and went back to looking over everything she knew she had today. Dianne was the one who came in. Jenny had thought it would probably be her since Kira wasn't often up this early. Over the last couple of days Dianne had gotten into the habit of coming over before Kira got up to talk with Jenny and have some tea. She looked over the spread out papers that Jenny had been going over. "Today's the big day, huh?" "Yup." "When do you have to be there?" "I've got a nine A.M. for the first one. I think he's a GP. Then I have to meet with an OB/GYN and a psychiatrist." "Will you be seeing yourself anytime today?" Jenny gulped a bit. "Maybe." "You want us with you for that?" "Definitely," she said passing Dianne her tea. "I'm thinking maybe we should take you out for dinner tonight. In honor of the occasion," she added. "What occasion?" Jenny asked her. "The birth of your dislike of speculums," Dianne said ominously, already ducking. Jenny threw a potholder at her. "You've been around Kira too long," she barked. Dianne raised up from behind the counter. "Nope. Not long enough," she said with a big grin. They sat down. Jenny started shuffling the papers she had into a folder. When she was done she slipped it under her murse. "That is the ugliest bag I have ever seen any woman carry," Dianne said, "Maybe I should take you to shop for something else when you have some time." "Don't knock my murse," Jenny said. "But it's hideous, it's just a fat black satchel. You deserve something better than that, something prettier." "Maybe some other time," Jenny said. "I bought it in China after I lost my wallet a few years ago. I carried it all the time over there. It's one of the few things I have left that are the same right now." "Oh," Dianne said. "Forget I said anything then." "Don't worry," she said. "Murse forgives you." Dianne mimed throwing something at Jenny "And you say I've been around Kira too long," she said feigning outrage. Kira was just getting up when Jenny had to be getting on the road. Instead of waiting, she and Dianne just told her to take her time and meet them later after Jenny had her first appointment. Kira grunted something indecipherable and waved bye to them while fumbling with some instant coffee. The medical park was across from Midland's Memorial. It was a sprawling collection of small offices separated by landscaping. There were few trees though and in the summer Jenny was pretty sure that she'd spend more than a little time hunting for a parking place that wouldn't turn the truck into an oven while she was parked. She and Dianne didn't have to hunt for the doctor's office for very long. It was close to the front and they got lucky finding a parking place. Jenny shifted to one side and used the handhold to swing herself down to the step. "You know you probably won't be able to keep driving this for too much longer," Dianne said watching her. "I'll deal with it then," she said closing the door. The sign outside the office was white on green. It had a scrolled legend saying "Pritchart and associates" with the building number in one corner. The waiting room was mostly empty. They walked up to the nurse at the sign in desk and told her who she was. The nurse looked up at her and asked to see her I.D. Jenny fished her driver's license and her passport out of her murse and handed it over. The nurse checked it against her register, found her name and looked up quickly. "Oh, she said, "you're that one. Dr. Pritchart wanted to see you the moment you checked in. Just hold on a second and I'll let him know you're here." She picked up the phone, dialed a couple of numbers and started talking quickly into it. After a minute there was a buzz of an electronic door unlocking and a heavyset man in scrubs waved them in. He held out his hand to Jenny. "Timothy Maria," he said in a deep rumbling voice. "Dr. Pritchart wants me to take you right back to him." The big man's hand closed around Jenny's and she watched it disappear into his massive paw. He was very gentle with her though, she barely felt his fingers around her hand. They went into the small side room and he started with the usual things, writing down the information in surprisingly delicate script on the form. When he finished he ushered them into an examination room and told them he was going to get the doctor now. A couple of minutes passed and he came back with a fifteen year old boy in a long white coat. The stethoscope hanging out of one pocket made it pretty clear that this was Dr. Pritchart. He greeted both of them and asked Jenny a couple of routine questions, making notes on the form. After a few minutes of questions he asked Jenny if she had her medical records from the embassy. Jenny told him she had an abbreviated copy, but as far as she knew the full records were already supposed to have been forwarded. Dr. Pritchart excused himself and asked them to wait a few minutes while he checked with what he had now against what they had sent. He left the room and closed the door quietly behind him. Jenny and Dianne looked at each other for a long dragging minute before both of the burst into whooping laughter. When they both calmed down enough to gasp for air, Dianne looked at Jenny again. "My god, your doctor's Doogie Houser," she said before convulsing in laughter again. Jenny rolled back on the examination table and laughed until her sides ached. When she finally subsided from the laughing fit, she turned over and looked at Dianne. "Kira is just going to be so sick that she missed this," she said watching Dianne start laughing some more until she had to stop and wipe the tears from her eyes. They were both chuckling still when the nurse opened the door to tell them that the doctor would be back in a couple of minutes. Just before he closed the door, he leaned back in and whispered. "You ladies don't have to try so hard to hide it. Dr. Pritchart knows what you're doing. Don't feel bad either. He always leaves to 'find records' now so you can get it out of your system. He thinks it's funny as hell too by the way." He gave them a quick wink and shut the door. The rest of the exam was pretty routine. Dr. Pritchart was mostly just repeating the physical she had gotten at the embassy, but when he started asking about her pregnancy his questions became a little more probing. Jenny asked him if he thought that there was anything wrong and he shook his head and said he didn't think so. He said he was surprised that Jenny had gained just about twelve pounds in the six weeks since the embassy had done their initial examination. She asked if that was unusual and he just shook his head. "It's an outlier, but you're well within reasonable limits," he said. Jenny was relieved, when he had remarked on how much weight she had gained for a moment she had a flash of fear that something might be wrong. He asked her who her OB/GYN was and she told him she had an appointment with Dr. Waverly right after she left here. Dr. Pritchart cocked his head. "Dan Waverly's a damn good one, I've known him for forty years." He checked himself. "She'll take good care of you, don't worry miss." He thanked her for coming in and asked the nurse to take them to the station to get her blood work started so she could get on with her next appointment. When they left they still had about twenty something minutes before they had to be there. The big nurse had told them the office they wanted wasn't too far away and pointed it out on a map for them. They decided to walk rather than mess with re-parking the truck. They took their time walking. It was a clear day and the breeze washing over them was warm without the hint of summer's heat that would be coming soon. Dr. Waverly's nurse also hustled them into the examination room shortly after they got there. "I guess they weren't kidding when they told you they were interested in you," Dianne said after the nurse closed the door. "I wonder if this is what it's like being rich?" Jenny said absently. Dianne pointed evilly at the stirrups on the examination table. "It's almost time," she said. Jenny couldn't help shuddering which made Dianne fail to stifle her laugh. "Bitch," Jenny said to her. Dianne just laughed more, but Jenny could tell that there was no malice in it so she stuck out her tongue at her sister in law. "It could be worse, you know," she said. "How?" Jenny asked almost dreading whatever was coming. "Your OB/GYN could be Punky Brewster," she said before collapsing into sputtering laughter. Jenny doubled over with laughter. "Please stop it," she said between laughs. "You're gonna kill me with that shit." "Ok...Ok," Dianne said. "No more for now." Dr. Waverly came in about a minute later. She was a slim blonde woman in her early fifties. Her hand was warm and she smiled in such a way that Jenny felt some of her trepidation about this appointment subside. After she went over some of the things that Jenny could expect in the next few weeks she started asking her about her exercise regimen. "I practice T'ai Chi almost every day," she said, "usually in the mornings, but sometimes in the evening." Dr. Waverly made a note on her chart and murmured approvingly. "You should be able to continue doing that until just before your due date. But I'd suggest that you stop a couple of weeks prior." "I also have started walking a couple of miles a day since I got down here and I've been thinking of finding a gym," Jenny finished. "I'd recommend that you limit your time on exercise machines and as your pregnancy advances you would benefit from water exercises more than other programs." Dr. Waverly gestured for her to get on the table. She turned and started adjusting the stirrups. "It's time," Dianne said in a movie monster voice. Dr. Waverly turned back and tossed her head at Dianne. "Is this the father?" she asked. "No, that's my sister-in-law, the troll," Jenny said giving Dianne a dirty look. Dr. Waverly settled Jenny's legs into the stirrups. "Did they include this in the exams you did at the embassy?" "No, Jenny said, "This is my first time," she added nervously. "I'll try to be kind then," Dr. Waverly said. Jenny still winced, but thankfully the doctor didn't take more time than was necessary. She finished up and helped Jenny get her legs out of the stirrups. "Everything looks normal. Have you had an ultrasound yet?" "No," Jenny said, "I'm almost afraid to, to tell you the truth." "Nothing to be afraid of." She asked her to relax while she got the equipment. "You just took a giant step into being a woman today sister," Dianne said when she left. "Kira hasn't even done this yet." "Is it always that uncomfortable?" Jenny asked. "Every damned time," Dianne said shaking her head in sympathy. Dr. Waverly wheeled in the monitor and turned it on. She pulled the gown away from Jenny's stomach and started spreading KY jelly. The machine hummed as she applied the fat white wand to her stomach. She started moving it around until she had a good image and then she did a screen capture. "Well, Miss Minton, you'll be pleased to know that I have good news for you. Your babies look perfectly normal from what I can tell. Jenny's head bobbed up. "Babies?" she asked. "Yes," Dr. Waverly answered. "From what I can tell it looks like you're going to be having twins. Is there a history of twins in your family?" Jenny nodded. "My sister Kim had fraternal twins, a boy and a girl." She gulped. "I'm the father, I switched with my girlfriend." Dr. Waverly nodded. "I read that in the information they sent. I understand that they have a strong suspicion that your girlfriend switched into your fetus? "Yes," Jenny nodded. Dr. Waverly started moving the wand again pointing out different features as she passed over them. "Would you like to know the babies sexes?" she asked. Jenny swallowed hard. She had been dreading that question ever since Mom had brought it up. She almost didn't want to know, but she had decided that it was better to get it over with. "Yes," she said in a subdued tone. "I want to know." Dr. Waverly moved the wand some more finally freezing the frame again and pointing. "This one is a little girl," she said finally. "Hold on, I'll try to get a good shot of the other one." She kept at it for a while and finally pulled the wand away. "I'm sorry, this little one just doesn't want to cooperate I'm afraid. We can try again during your next visit. Maybe we'll have better luck then." She gave Jenny a towel to clean up with and gave her some final advice before leaving. She had been very kind and her manner had gone a long way toward putting Jenny at ease. But she still was in a daze leaving the office. Dianne helped her walk back to the truck. "I never even considered twins," she said quietly. "Do you want me to drive to go meet Kira?" Dianne asked her. Jenny nodded and let her help her into the passenger seat.

Wish Shift Dreamscapes

Wish shift: Dreamscapes 1 A.S. Day? The first thing I noticed was the reek all of the flowers. The smell of them made the air noxious with their scent. It surrounded me and seemed like it was impregnating even my clothes. It was in my hair and lingered like a thick blanket in my nose and mouth. It was sweet and warm. I could feel soft satin covering me entirely except for my hands. My fingers are bare. I wondered where it came from. I didn't own anything in satin. But it's here now,...

Wish Shift When Shadows Burn

Wish Shift: Chapter Thirty-Seven When Shadows Burn Year 1 A.S. Day 192 Day 237 of Jenny's pregnancy Brother Paul kept driving past Derek's home. Derek's jeep was there parked under the carport, but it was the other car there that made him abandon stopping in as an option. He fumed as he drove down the road. Who could that possibly be that was there? And why were they here now of all times? He sensed the hand of the devil in this and considered that he might have to call Brother...

Wish Shift Standing At The Roads Fork

Wish Shift: Chapter Thirty-Eight Standing At The Road's Fork Year 1 A.S., Day 193 Afternoon Dr. Warren looked at Agent Matthews in the chair across from him. Jenny had already left with Danny and the two other agents. Derek was sitting outside in the waiting room. Usually he was against involving others in his therapeutic method, especially those who were romantically involved. He disliked relationship counseling, there was always the feeling in one of those kinds of sessions...

Wish Shift A Woman Named Amy

Wish Shift: Chapter Thirty-Three A Woman Named Amy Year 1 A.S. Day 170 Amy had a busy day. They had left the camp earlier this morning and gotten on the road to go home. The other ladies there had gathered around her before they left, to pray the Lord strengthen her and her husband, as they ventured out into the world of the tribulation. It would not truly be safe for the Lord's people yet, but it had to be done. While she and her sisters in faith prayed, Joshua had gathered with...

Wish Shift To See Beneath The Skin

Wish Shift: Chapter Thirty To See Beneath The Skin Year 1 A.S. Day 169 Dr. Nakamura leaned over J.L. helping him slowly move forward a step. "That's it," she said encouraging him. "Just take a slow step, you can do it J.L." Jenny was across from him sitting in a chair on the other side of the exercise room that they had set up to work with their charges. She was making come to me motions with her hands and calling for J.L. to reach her. J.L.'s tongue moved in his mouth and he...

Wish Shift Zai Jian

Wish Shift: Chapter Eleven Zai Jian Year 1 A.S. Day 58 Night Jenny sat in her room. She had taken all of the clothing that she would not be wearing anymore and piled it on the bed. She reached for the first empty box and started to fold pants and t-shirts and carefully put them away. It was quiet now. Mom and grandma had already gone out the pop-up to go to sleep. She was by herself now, there was only the light in the room and the darkness outside her window to keep her...

Wish Shift: Chapter Three Armistice Year 1 A.S. Day 38 Jenny didn't know how long she was leaning against mom crying. Mom just let her lean against him until her tears stopped. "It was your grandmother who pointed it out to me," he said after Jenny's tears ceased and she calmed down again. "She said to me a couple of days ago that you were acting just like a couple friends of hers had after their husbands died. She said that they tried to freeze as much of their life as...

Wish Shift Crossing the Rubicon

Wish Shift: Chapter Nineteen Crossing the Rubicon Year 1 A.S. Day 103 Bob's was a little bit busy this morning for a Thursday. Derek had picked Jenny up at her house at the regular time for her appointment, but they still had more than an hour or so to kill when they walked into the restaurant. Bob waved to Jenny and Derek as they came in the door, but he didn't come over. There were too many people cycling through the place at the moment. Jenny was pretty sure that if he got a...

Jenny quickly dialed Derek and talked to him for a few minutes and then hung up. "Derek can't come," she said obviously disappointed. "He can't get away from the shop today. If you had given us more notice he probably could have," she said turning back to packing her beach bag. Kira glanced at Dianne. She'd noticed the us in that sentence...

Wish Shift Pathways

Wish Shift: Chapter Eight Pathways Year 1 A.S. Day 46 Jenny heard the car pull into her lot in the dim glow of light just before dawn. She had been up until almost midnight the night before and had needed to rush to the toilet sometime in the early morning hours to deal with a bout of morning sickness. Those had been coming less frequently this last week and she was starting to hope that she may be close to parting ways with this particular aspect of being a woman soon. Leaning...

Wish Shift: Adjustments 1 A.S. Day 147 When Derek got out of the shower, he was still half in amazement at Jenny. He toweled himself dry and wrapped the damp towel around himself. He figured he might as well make the bed after he put some clothes on. He really wanted to do something nice for Jenny today, but right now he couldn't think of what it should be. He found himself thinking about what she had told him about Sonya and that brought him back to last night and what she said to...

Wish Shift : Chapter Ten Tabula Rasa Year 1 A.S. Day 56 Before they went to Dr. Waverly's, Kira and Dianne took her to get a couple of new sets of clothes. Jenny had already apologized to them for being angry with how they reacted to her risking herself and the twins, but there were still some dark feelings swimming around them. The problem was, even with all of the shades down on the windows, you could still see the outline of daylight around them. The Great Shift Healing Hands

The Great Shift: Healing Hands By Johnny Girl ([email protected]) I stared down at my hands. My hands. I still had trouble believing they were really mine. They were long and slender and delicate and feminine, wearing rings and bracelets, the fingers tipped with sparkly purple fingernail polish. These weren't the hands I was familiar with. They weren't the rough and strong and calloused hands I'd been so dependent on; they were weak and soft and smooth and small and useless...

The Great Shift The Empty Place Inside Part 1 of 2 revised

The Great Shift: The Empty Place Inside by BlueshifTG Part 1 The straps were loosened on the black 1" heel shoes tumbled under the desk. The Wish Shift Part One The Winter of Her Heart

The Wish Shift Prologue Year 1 A.S. Day 16 The office had very little decoration. A couple of framed prints on the walls of mountains that could be from anywhere in the western U.S. but existed only in the printmaker's imagination. There were no family pictures on the desk's surface so the young Chinese woman who was presently sitting in one of the two chairs facing the desk knew that this was no one's actual office. It was just an interrogation room. Small, windowless and...

The Great Shift Summers End Part 2

Once upon a time, I used to be the type of guy who firmly believed women could never get ready on time because they could never decide what to wear. I mean, what guy hasn't watched any number of sitcoms or romcoms where the husband/boyfriend continually looks at his watch, becoming more and more exasperated and impatient, while his darling dear tries on an entire wardrobe's worth of clothing? No matter how relaxed the dress code of the event they are attending, the woman has to make...

The ArrangementChapter 6 Conversations and Examinations

After reading the FAQ (three times!) I leaned back on the sofa and exhaled sharply. Part of me couldn’t believe this was real; another part of me was thrilled and hoping against hope that it was genuine. It seemed too good to be true, ridiculously so. I thought about the entire thing for a couple of minutes, turning the pros and cons over in my mind. I quickly realized I didn’t even want to consider any other option -- I was going to assume that this was legitimate, and see it through until...
