Wish Shift: Chapter Thirty To See Beneath The Skin Year 1 A.S. Day 169 Dr. Nakamura leaned over J.L. helping him slowly move forward a step. "That's it," she said encouraging him. "Just take a slow step, you can do it J.L." Jenny was across from him sitting in a chair on the other side of the exercise room that they had set up to work with their charges. The two big men who helped him to his feet were standing quietly to one side. Once J.L. had gotten the idea into his mind of what to do they were able to leave off of him a bit and let him take his own weight. A few more steps and he was almost within reach of her and he stopped. She urged him on for just one more step and he just wouldn't do it. He started leaning back and then sat down. He looked up at her expectantly. Jenny told him that he was doing fine and looked over to Dr. Nakamura. Mika nodded, her curly red hair bobbing when she did. Mika had gotten a permanent over the weekend and Jenny was still getting used to the difference in how it made her look. Jenny reached into the cooler beside her and retrieved the long plastic tube holding the grape ice pop that she had shown J.L. earlier. When she and Mika had been discussing how they could do this Jenny had just said that when she had been a kid he had loved them and there was no reason for the kid inside of her old body not to love them as well. She joked that one of these mornings that she would be woke up by whichever kid it was using Morse code. Mika laughed a bit about the last part. She said that if something like that happened Dr. Min would probably have her head explode in excitement. Mika looked to J.L. again and said that she was sure that when he did begin to seriously talk, and in her opinion it would be really soon, that he would absolutely flood them with whatever chatter he came up with. "He's kind of mixed now," Mika said, "Mentally he's about maybe twelve to fourteen months I'd venture to say." Mika laughed when Jenny said that and then said that she knew that feeling all too well. Jenny started to stand up and when she got to her feet, she asked Mika if she knew where Dr. Min was. Dr. Nakamura said that she thought that she was in her office. Jenny came back to Dr. Nakamura down in the exercise area. She asked Mika if she had anything else scheduled for J.L. for the day and when Mika said no she said she should probably go home then and get some rest. She admitted that even with being in a larger home and having Derek around her all of the time to help her she was definitely starting to feel much more tired even more often than before. Mika said that she had been thinking about this and didn't see why she shouldn't bring it up now. Jenny's advancing pregnancy had been a frequent topic of discussion between Mika and Dr. Min. When Jenny had to beg off most of last week they had already decided to reduce her participation in the project as much as possible until Jenny was able to resume her level of regular involvement. Dr. Min had already mentioned to Jenny about suspending their writing experiment already. Mika suggested now that Jenny should be spending a little less time with her as well. And that when she came she should focus more on being J.L.'s mother than anything else. "So I'm on visiting hours now Mika?" she asked. Mika looked up at her. "Just till you can't physically come anymore," she said. "When you can't do even that, we'll put your part of this on hold until after you have your babies." Jenny thanked her for looking out for her and said she was going to go home now. Mika told her to get some rest now and she would see her when she came back. Jenny made her way to the front doors of the institute. As she walked she reached into her purse and fished out her phone to call Derek so he could come for her. It only took him a couple of minutes to get there. She sat on one of the benches out front and enjoyed the shade. It was cooling off, but summer was still here even if it was taking it's time leaving for the year. Derek's jeep swung into the traffic circle in front of the doors and stopped. By the time she had gotten up and started moving, Derek had already killed the engine as was coming to help her into her seat. She told him to quit it, that she was not that feeble yet. He answered that he was just getting into the habit for when she was. Jenny didn't have an answer to him for that and just told him that she was going to be coming here a little less often for now. He asked her if she wanted to go home now and she felt that little glow that knowing he was talking about their home rather than hers alone suffuse her. She said that she probably should go to Java Jolts with him but she would rather go home for now. He leaned over the gearshift and kissed her and told her it was ok. On the way to the house she asked him if he would mind having Dr. Min over for dinner on Friday. Derek eyed her while keeping the jeep on the road and asked her what she had in mind. When she told him last weekend that she wanted to ask Dr. Min over to make some pork dumplings with them soon, she could see him visibly relax a little. When she asked him about it, he said that he was wondering if she meant having Madeline over instead. When he said that, Jenny just said that she liked Madeline automatically and that she had been a big help to her while he was gone. Derek had asked her then when it was that she wanted Dr. Min over. Day 172 Derek watched Jenny start laying out what they needed on the counter. She had asked him to go to the supermarket earlier to get what they would need. After that she had him take her to Shifa, the Asian supermarket across town, to get the dumpling wrappers. That had been an interesting experience for Derek. He'd never been in any ethnic supermarket before and it was strange for him to walk in the aisles filled with different products labeled in Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai and Japanese. He watched her scoop a small yellow box off of one of the shelves and into their cart. There was a cartoon character that looked like he had a mushroom on his head there. He asked her what that was and she told him that it was a snack that she had gotten fond of while she was living in China. He saw her grab a few other things as well before they got to the back and went over the cold case. She looked over the contents, reached inside and picked up a tubular sac that looked like it had small thin flour pancakes inside of it. When he asked her if that was what they had come for, she told him it was and that she was glad that they could find it here. If they hadn't, then she would have either had to see if the lady at King Wok would sell her some or they would just have to make them from scratch when Dr. Min got there. She told him that it wouldn't have been much of a hassle, but it would slow them down. They went over to the freezer section and she picked out a bag of what looked like were small white balls. On the package was a cutout of one of the balls with some kind of filling. She told him that they were good and that he would probably like them. She found a few other things as well before they went up to the register. When he asked her about the large dark bottle of soy sauce she had picked up she told him that it was vinegar, not soy sauce and opened it for him to smell. He wrinkled his nose at the pungent odor and she told him to just keep an open mind for now. On the way home she reached into the bag and fished out the yellow box and opened it. She pulled out one of the smaller foil packets inside and tore it open. She handed one of the pieces inside to him. "What is it?" he asked. "It's a cookie," she said, "It looks like a mushroom, but the cap is chocolate and the stem is the cookie. They're good," she said popping one in her mouth. Derek took a bite. "Those are pretty good," he said holding out his hand for another. She dropped a couple more in his hand. "I used to get these all the time from a little shop on the first floor of my apartment," she said munching happily. "So that was like a Chinese supermarket then?" he asked turning onto River road. "Not really," she said, "they had a few of the same things, but it's really more like the import food section you would find there. "So what was missing?" he asked. It had looked pretty well stocked to him. "Well for one thing there wasn't any table with flat dried chickens hanging overhead." "Dried chickens?" he asked. "Yeah," she said, "markets there have a lot more dried foods than you find here. It's part of what gives them the smell of a supermarket there. That and they don't have huge tanks of fish in the corner," Derek didn't say anything. He was trying to imagine what it was like and he kept failing to visualize it. He looked over at her eating her package of cookies and he realized again his Jenny had a deep well of experiences inside of her that he had only begun to plumb the depths of. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jenny reached over and picked up the fat white vegetable and put it on the big wooden cutting board. The cutting board was new. They had gotten it when she told him that she needed to overhaul the kitchen. He had just used the counter before, but she had insisted he get this one instead. "I've seen these in the market, but I've never had them before," Derek said. "It's a Daikon radish," she said. She handed him a knife and asked him to cut it into chunks while she set the other things out. There was a big chunk of pork in a bowl in the sink and she was taking the chunks as he cut them and putting them into another big bowl. When he finished she handed him the pork and told him to do the same with that. He started slicing the meat. Her phone started ringing and she wiped off her hands and reached for it. While Derek finished up he heard her talking with Danny. "So are they coming down too?" Derek asked her when she hung up. "I wish, but no," she said, "Mom called to tell me that Kim and Jake came back the other day and he was just letting me know." "And is Jake better?" he asked slicing the last of the pork into chunks. "I'm not sure," she said. "Mom said she's not the same." "That was the point wasn't it?" he asked. "Not this way," she said, "She's calling herself Amy now and mom said that she is pregnant." "I guess they helped her to adjust then," he said. "Maybe," she replied, "but mom said that there was something really off about both of them. Her phone rang again and she reached for it to answer. She started talking in Chinese for a few minutes and then hung up. "That was Dr. Min," she said. "She said that she should be here in a few minutes and wanted to double check so she didn't get lost." She reached into the drawer and pulled out a big cleaver. The cleaver was new too. Derek had never even tried to use one before. "That damned thing scares me," he said as she handed it to him. "It's just a big knife," she said. "Some people in China use only this for just about everything big." She took it back and started using it to chop some leaks. Derek just watched her as her hands wielded the big cleaver with deliberate skillful strokes. "I'm surprised you have all of your fingers," he said watching her. Once she finished cutting the leeks into chunks she divided them into two piles and started using the cleaver to chop one pile into a fine mush. He watched her reduce the pile of leek chunks to a finely cut pulp and then she handed the cleaver over to him. She asked him to do the same to the pork and the radish. As she watched him her phone rang again. She kissed him on the cheek and told him to be slow and careful. She went out to meet Dr. Min. Derek concentrated on doing what she told him. He heard the two women walk into the kitchen behind him talking to each other in Chinese. It really wasn't as dangerous as he thought it was. Dr. Min watched Derek chopping the pork on the cutting board and asked Jenny if she would like for her to do that. She said she really didn't feel right just standing around. Jenny told her that there were a couple of other things that she could do while she walked Derek through this if she wanted to take care of that, but she really wanted for Derek to learn how to do this the slow way instead of relying on a food processer or a blender. She handed Dr. Min the potatoes that they had already cut and asked her if she could start on those. Dr. Min asked her how spicy she wanted them and started cooking the matchstick potatoes in the wok while Jenny watched Derek and talked with her. Jenny asked her if she would be returning to China when they had finished at the institute. Dr. Min told her that she really didn't know what she was going to do. Her parents had died before the Shift and in addition to her wife and children dying during it, her brother was still missing and probably would never be found. She also was starting to feel anxious about what would happen when she went back as well. She told Jenny that even though she was a foreigner here she felt like a foreigner back home as well now. "Even though everyone is just as mixed up there as any other place, there are still so many that just look at me and assume I'm what they see. I had so many negative experiences with people who made it clear that I didn't belong there before I left. That was one of the reasons that I wanted to come here for this project," she said. She told Jenny that even with the changes since things had started to settle now, she wasn't sure if she wouldn't see if she could just stay here or not. There wasn't any hurry to decide what she would do and the prospect of being treated like an outsider in the one place she shouldn't be was in no way appealing. The project would be ongoing for several years to come, even when Jenny finished her part in it. And even then there would be so much to do to try to translate the data that they were gathering into a workable program just to begin. The two of them chatting in Chinese while he was off to the side also gave him a bit of a strange feeling. He knew that they weren't talking about him, or at least not exclusively about him, but while they were doing it he thought about some of the things that she had told him about living over there and after today he thought that he had just a little taste of what it was like for her. He knew that she wasn't doing this for that reason. But he couldn't help feeling out of place while they both seemed completely at ease. It was also a lot more and at the same time a lot less effort to put these dishes together. When she had taken him to King Wok and gotten them to get those off menu items for them it had been surprising to him. He had just thought that what you got there already was Chinese food, but after that and especially after tonight he thought that he was starting to know a little better. It made him look at Jenny with new eyes. She wasn't a Chinese woman, but her years there, even living as an outsider had made her into a melding of both cultures in so many small ways. It reminded him that even with the changes the Shift had wrought how much the sum of your own experiences marked a person. Jenny was saying goodbye to Dr. Min while he started collecting the dishes and taking them into the kitchen. When she came in to help him load the dishwasher he leaned over and kissed her. Day 172 Brother Paul reached into his pocket for his phone. As he did so he frowned at the silent door in front of him. Until now that mud woman was here where she needed to be when he came, but not today. He looked through the list of numbers and found hers. Quickly he typed her a text that it was time for her to take her vitamins and waited until the program that one of the tech people had installed on the phone told him that the message had been read. He went back to his car and started a timer. When it ran out he called her. As it rang he thought about how he should word this. Her inappropriate behavior in leaving the home would have to stop now. She should not have put him in the position of having to make adjustments to her in this manner. Brother John was interested of course in this sort of application, but Brother Paul mainly saw it as an unacceptable risk right now. He heard the click of her answering him and after he had given her greetings he had never felt, he asked her if she had taken her vitamins yet. He heard the slight slur in her voice that told him she was in the early stages of the drug taking effect and suggested to her that she go somewhere private so that she could sit and speak with him undisturbed. After going through all of the previous commands again to put her in a receptive frame of mind he had her agreement to take her pill and call him when she was away from others if she was outside of the home from now on. That was not a really difficult loop to create in her mind, but he did find having to go over the same ideas to reinforce them to be tedious. He listened to her dead voiced affirmation on the other end of the connection and decided that it was time to begin nudging her toward staying in the home as she should have done from the beginning. As she listened he started by suggesting that she should take more time to stay home now that her delivery date was approaching. That was accepted with no resistance from her. He added a few more comments to reinforce that idea for now, but he wanted to wait until they were speaking in person before he nailed the idea down in her mind. As her voice began to lose that slight wooden quality that all of them had while they were under he reiterated to her that she should not bother her husband while she was doing this. It took only a little bit of verbal gymnastics but finally her answers to his lead made him confident that she would actively conceal how she was like when she took these pills from others. He hung up the phone after he could tell she was starting to actively come out of it. He made plans to see her soon. This inconvenience she had imposed on him was unacceptable and he would see to eliminating it starting with their next meeting. He started the engine and began driving to his next action item for today. He would be early but that wouldn't matter. It would give him some time to think about how this whole thing should play out. This mud woman that Derek had gotten involved with was obviously unacceptable in a permanent way, even if she had served her present purpose well. Brother Paul thought about where she was realistically in her education and tried to calculate the minimum time it would take to put her in a proper frame of mind and bring Derek home. As much as he regretted it, he realized that Brother John was correct. They would have to be much more active in using the Water of Truth on the Blessed as well as the cursed. It was more important that they take their proper place as Levites as soon as possible. Brother Paul realized that once she had brought Derek into the camp they would have to be separated immediately. He made a note to himself to have Sister Mary tell sister Vicki that it was almost time for her to be moved into the mud woman's place in Derek's mind. It was imperative that his feelings for her be transferred to another appropriate member of the Blessed. But what to do with the mud woman though? Of course he didn't have to concern himself with keeping her feelings for Derek intact, the round the clock dosage she would experience when she was undergoing treatment would take care of that. And it really didn't matter about what she felt before so long as she was obedient when she completed her course of instruction. Since she was of the cursed he was initially just going to assign her to the general breeding pool and place her with another cursed as a wife, but after finding out that she was the woman that had beaten Cody and Stephan so badly he had considered other options as well. It would be appropriate he thought, to have her service one or both of them as a concubine perhaps that would suffice as a penance for a time. Brother Paul was certain that after she had her litter, both of them would welcome that opportunity.
