Wish Shift: Chapter Twenty Eight Walk The Line I keep a close watch on this heart of mine I keep my eyes wide open all the time I keep the ends out for the tie that binds Because you're mine, I walk the line- Johnny Cash Year 1 A.S. Day 158 Trisha still was unconscious most of the day, but in the evening he started to truly come out of it. He was still under heavy pain meds, but the doctors were expressing much more confidence about his condition now. That was a tremendous relief to Derek. Arnie was sitting beside Trisha. He has spent most of the last thirteen hours here after Derek had come and Derek could see that, if he had gotten any real sleep, it hadn't done him any good. He knew that Trisha had shifted into the body of this man already. Trisha had called him to let him know what had happened after things had settled down a few weeks after the Shift had passed. After aunt Dina had died, Trisha had become kind of a surrogate aunt for Derek and they had kept in close contact. He really had wished that Trisha and aunt Dina could have gotten married a long time ago. Aunt Dina had been close with a lot of her girlfriends, but Trisha was different. If aunt Dina hadn't gotten cancer he was pretty sure that they would have still been together in some way today. Trisha had also been one of those telling him that his relationship with Jenny was not just a friendship when he spoke with him about it. But unlike Mindy, who was constantly pushing him toward her, Trisha had been the one urging him to let her set the pace. She would let him know when and if it would be more than it was going to be was Trisha's opinion. That was his advice for Derek and after Jenny had done just that, he was glad that he had been smart enough to listen to him. Trisha was one of the first persons Derek had called to break the news that he and Jenny were together now after she had moved in with him. He didn't think that aunt Dina could have been any more approving than Trisha was and he had asked him to come down and meet her. When Derek told him that she had just never left after their first night together, Trisha laughed and said that he had been around lesbians too long. When he asked what he meant by that Trisha said that it was because they were bringing a moving van on their second date. Derek laughed it off, because he knew that he didn't mean anything bad by it and asked him when he could come down. He wanted Trisha to come and meet Jenny. Trisha said that he'd do it soon and would call him before they would come. Then Arnie called him at Java Jolts and told him what had happened. Trisha had been getting some money from an ATM. The two men who did it had stepped up to him and just started beating him. They hadn't said a single word while they were doing it. Only after he was unconscious did they bother to take out the limit from his account. The police didn't have much to go on either. Both men had worn gloves and covered their faces during the attack. Derek told Mindy after that call that he would be outside for a while and that Mindy might need to call in Teddy or Jamaal to cover for him for a couple of days. He went into the office and got the fifth of bourbon that he kept in the file cabinet and went out front to the outside tables to have a stiff drink while he worked it through in his mind. That was where Brother Paul found him, sitting at one of the white metal tables nursing a heavily whiskey laced cup of coffee. He really didn't feel like dealing with Brother Paul today and considered asking him to leave, but unlike his previous visits Brother Paul just said that Derek looked very upset and asked if there was there anything that he could do. When Derek told him about the attack it was one of the few times that he could hear him actually sound like a regular person and not a sanctimonious prick. Somehow during the conversation he found himself agreeing that he must go to see Trisha right away. It made sense to him, that was mainly what he had come outside to work out the details in his mind as well as to let his mental state settle a bit before calling Jenny and seeing if she could come with him. He wasn't quite sure when Brother Paul left, but after he did, Derek went in and told Mindy that he needed to call one of the guys now and see if they could come in. If they couldn't then it would be best to close the shop for a couple of days while he was gone. Mindy told him that wouldn't be necessary and that he could handle it even by himself if he had to. He had met Trisha a few times when she dropped in before the Shift and was concerned about what had happened to him as well. Derek wasn't sure just how, but even though he would have preferred for Jenny to come with him, he also had the idea in him that she would be better off staying at her place while he was gone. Trisha stirred in the hospital bed. Arnie leaned over him and whispered that he was here. Derek saw his one remaining good eye move from Arnie around the room and light on him. He reached for Trisha's hand and squeezed it to reassure him. Derek let out a mental breath that he had been holding. "I'm here for you too, Trisha," he said. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Year 1 A.S. Day 160 Mindy came out to check on her while she sat out front of Java Jolts. Jenny had been lounging at her usual table enjoying the cool respite of evening after the heat from the day. Even though it had started being noticeably less hot, it was still enough to drive her inside most of the time. But the a/c was too cold for her after a little while so she found herself drifting between the inner and outer seats in a futile effort to find some sort of balance . Mindy didn't stay and talk with her like Derek did, but he still kept tabs on her while she was there. He asked her about the latest from Derek about Trisha each time he came over. She told him that Derek said that it was a bad as they thought it would be. Trisha would probably never regain full use of her arm again. It had been shattered in too many places while he had been using it to shield his head from the two men's blows. She told him that Trisha would be released from the hospital in a couple of days and be treated as an outpatient after that. Derek told her that he was just going to stay long enough to make sure that he would be all right before coming home again. He asked her how she was doing and Jenny told him that she was managing. She had gotten them to reduce her schedule with Dr. Min a bit this week. That had not been much of an issue. Dr. Min had said that it would be good to monitor her learning of written Chinese with a less intensive schedule so they could see how that affected their results. Dr. Min also brought up that since she was well into the beginning of her third trimester that they would have to be taking a break from their work together soon anyway. Dr. Nakamura was also wanting her to back off a bit and suggested that she just spend more time with J.L. as his mother rather than as just another person who was helping him to progress. She told him that J.L. had started talking recently. Nothing complex, but there were clearly words coming from him now. Derek told her that he was glad that his absence hadn't caused her too much trouble. She told him that mom had offered to come down, but she had told him that she would be fine until he got back. She told Derek that she was spending more time just at home if she wasn't at Java Jolts. She told him it was getting a little more difficult to move around in the kitchen and she had taken to getting delivery and take-out since he had gone to Asheville. He told her that he would be home soon and they talked some more until the charge on her phone started getting low and she had to hang up. After the taxi came for her and she got home she plugged it in and looked around at her little trailer. She had been shading the truth a bit from him. Getting into the kitchen now was an effort in manipulative navigation. The bathroom was just a tight fit and worst of all the emptiness of her bed now after having experienced him lying next to her the last few days was something only to be endured. She had just finished her take out from Bob's and put the trash in the bag by the door when she saw a dark grey sedan pull up outside. It was Madeline. Since Brother Paul had brought her with him that first day when he dropped in on her, she had stopped by just about every night. Brother Paul didn't come by often now but she did. Jenny could almost set her watch by her arrival. Jenny put that down to his reluctance to being seen alone with her in her home. He really shouldn't have worried about it she thought. Both he and Madeline were welcome in her home and she made sure to tell them that when they came by. Derek trusted them after all and a good wife should trust her husband's judgment. Madeline came inside and started asking her about how she was doing. Jenny thought that it was pretty good of her to be so concerned with the well-being of someone that she had just met a few days ago. "So do you still need me to take you to your OB/GYN on Thursday?" Madeline asked her. "If you don't mind," Jenny answered, "but I have to go to Dr. Pritchart's office before that. I have a physical checkup in the morning with him and he said it's time to do some blood work again." "That sounds like you should be pretty careful the night before you go." Jenny wondered what she could mean by that and was about to ask her when she reminded her that she should take her pre-natal vitamins. Jenny didn't know how it was possible for her to keep forgetting to take something so important but she managed to do so. It was lucky for her that Brother Paul and Madeline had her best interests in mind and kept reminding her. Jenny put the question she had for Madeline out of her mind and went to get them. She wanted to be a good responsible mother and a good mother would be sure that she didn't neglect her babies health by not taking them. Madeline watched her swallow the capsule and kept her busy with small talk until she was under. "Jenny," she said. "Yes," she answered. "It's important for your babies to be healthy isn't it?" "Of course it is," she said. "And you should make sure that you are ready and prepared when you go to see your doctors shouldn't you?" "Yes, I should be," she said. "So on the days that you see your doctors you should make sure that you don't take your pre-natal vitamins," she said steadily, watching Jenny as she spoke. "Why not? I want them to be healthy," she said. "They will be, but you know the doctors have to have a clean sample when they test you so they know how the children are developing. You can take your vitamins in the evening after they do their tests. That's what a good mother would do," she said "I want to be a good mother," Jenny echoed. Madeline told her that she was being a good mother and that she would be there to pick her up on Thursday morning. She left Jenny in the silent trailer and went out to her car. When she got back to the camp she would tell Brother Paul that it was done and that Jenny would not be taking her pills on the days when she would be seeing her doctors. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Year 1 A.S. Day 161 Derek called her in the morning. Trisha would be released from the hospital late in the afternoon and he would be staying with them until the next morning. He wanted to get him settled before heading back to her. He said that he would be leaving in the morning so he could get a fresh start and would be back at her trailer sometime in the early afternoon. When he said that Jenny almost told him how much she was looking forward to having her husband back with her, but she didn't. She wanted to be a good wife, but she knew that it wouldn't be the right time to say something like that to him yet. She told him that she missed him and would be waiting for him to get back with her. He told her that he felt the same and she felt her heart lift when he did. After they talked she considered calling for a cab and going to Java Jolts, but decided that she would just stay here instead. It had rained last night and the day was mostly cool rather than humid. She reached in the little freezer and took some hot dogs out to thaw for her to use on the grill later. She took a pitcher of iced tea out of the fridge and went outside to read for a while since it was nice out now. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jenny was outside of her trailer when Brother Paul parked his car in her yard. She was grilling out and he could see from the things scattered on the small table by the lawn chair that she had been outside for most of the day. She waved at him and told him hello as he got out of the car. She was really quite friendly he thought. It would be a good foundation for her when she was properly guided into the role Brother Paul had in mind for her later. She offered him some tea and asked if he would join her for some the hot dogs she was grilling. He shook his head and told her that regrettably he couldn't do that today. He was just here to check on her and see if she needed anything was all. He said that perhaps when Derek returned they might have him over another time. She said she'd mention it to Derek when he returned tomorrow. Brother Paul asked her if things were better than before with Derek's friend. She said that he was out of the hospital now and he seemed to be doing all right for the time being, but that he would have a lot of physical therapy before he would even start to be normal again. Brother Paul said that was excellent news. He said that it was good to hear that even with that tragedy that Derek's friend would be recovering. He asked if there had been any leads from the police on them catching the men responsible. Jenny said that Derek didn't mention anything about that and she didn't think that they knew anything more now than they did at the start. Brother Paul knew that they wouldn't. Cody and Stephen had been very careful when they went up to Asheville to take care of this. They had even had film of the two of them roasting a pig for a church supper ready as an alibi, if it was necessary. They had taken back roads all the way to Asheville and had avoided the checkpoints so there was not much of a chance that the authorities would be looking for anyone outside of the Asheville area. He told Jenny that he hoped that those responsible for such a terrible action would be captured soon. She thanked him for the sentiment and used a fork to turn over the hot dogs she had on the grill. He waited for her to finish cooking and take the hot dogs into the house before he asked her if she had taken her vitamins yet. She told him no and immediately went in to get them. It still made him marvel at how effectively that the initial instructions that she had been given were still holding. This was truly a powerful weapon the Lord had provided for them. She took them with her tea and started to slowly eat after asking him again if he would like some. He again politely refused. He kept up a patter of small talk with her until she started to fall under the drugs influence. He watched her start to move slower and then stop. He waited another minute before beginning. He wanted her fully under for this next step. "Jenny are you comfortable here?" he asked her. "What do you mean?" she answered. "It can't be very comfortable here for you," he said. "You must have a hard time moving around in your little trailer." "It hasn't been very easy on me," she said. "Was it easier for you when your husband Derek was here? When you were just being his wife in his home?" he asked. "It was," she answered. "It was very comfortable and much easier to be there as well." "And what made being there easier?" he asked. "Derek's home is bigger," she said. "And was that all?", he asked. "Was it just the size of the home that made the difference?" "No," she said, "it was having him there. That made everything easier for both of us." "And now you find yourself missing him now that he is away?" he said rhetorically. "Yes," she said, "ever since he had to go, I've just missed him more the longer he's away." "You shouldn't be away from him then," he said. "A wife should be with her husband. It would be wrong for her to be separated from him." "Yes," she agreed, "we should be together." "You should be there from now on then. Your place is in the home, isn't it?" he said. She hesitated in answering him. "I want to be with Derek," she finally said. "Yes," he said, "Derek needs you in his home doesn't he." "Derek's a grown man," she said showing some confusion now. "He doesn't need me to do things for him." He could tell from her response that his words were up against a firm wall of belief. Brother Paul decided to shift his approach slightly. "Are you a good cook Jenny?" he asked her. "Of course," she said, "Derek loves when I cook. I'm very good at it." "And is Derek much busier than you isn't he?" "Yes, he's spending so many hours at work usually. At least he did before we became a couple," she said. "And do both of you live better now that you are together?" he asked. "Of course we do," she insisted. "And does he take care of you?" "Yes, he takes good care of me. He's very attentive." She was falling into that pattern of automatic response. Brother Paul was pretty sure that he had gone around that mental wall she had inside now. "You should be with him then, you should be in the home being his wife then," he said more firmly. "I want that," she said in a hazy way. "Of course you do," he said, "you want to be a good wife." "I want to be a good wife," she echoed. "So when Derek returns you need to go take your place in his home." "I want to be in our home with him," she said happily. "And when you get in the home, where you belong, all you really want from now on is to be a wife to Derek and a mother to the children." "Yes," she said. Brother Derek could see that she was now in the most suggestible stage. For the next few minutes she could take instructions without questioning them. "Once you are in the home you don't want to leave it again," he said. "No, I don't." "You won't need anything else wasting your time like jobs or careers. Those things interfere with being a wife and mother and that is the only thing you want to be from now on." "Yes, it is," she beamed. And sister Madeline is who you should listen to when you think of how you should behave as a wife from now on." "I like Madeline," she said. "When your husband returns you should make faith part of your marriage as well. You'll talk to him about that won't you?" "I will," she said in a faint hollow response. "I have to go now Jenny, but I'm sure that you want to use the time that you have now to reflect on what it is that you should do as a wife after you are back in your husband's home where you belong." He got up out of the seat and went back to his car. He watched her sitting in her little home by the window. She would be having his directions to her ricocheting around her mind for a while until they settled. He would have to make sure that he and Madeline visited her and Derek as soon as they were home. Derek should not object to that visit very much. When he had resolved to use the Water of Truth on him Brother Paul made sure that there were a couple of important ideas left in Derek's mind placed there to guide him as well. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Year 1 A.S. Day 163 Jenny was hyper all morning. Derek had called her shortly after she was awake and told her that he would be leaving Asheville as soon as he got something to eat and got everything loaded into his jeep. She told him that she would be absolutely waiting for him and to hurry home to her. He said he would and how he said that made her feel both warm from her emotions about him and cold that he was not here yet. She looked around her little trailer. The last couple of days had been gradually more uncomfortable for her. It wasn't just the physical cramping of being so ungainly in such a small space. It was more than that. She looked around at the cramped environs of her trailer and understood deep inside her that she just didn't belong here anymore. It wasn't that it was any less hers now, it was that when she went home with Derek the next time she felt that she shouldn't come back here again to live. Her place was in Derek's home from now on and she had a lot of work to do there. She was his wife and she needed to show him what that meant so that he would recognize it to and marry her as soon as possible. She squeezed into the passage that led to her bedroom and started packing as much as she could into the bags she had available. She piled them on the bed when they were full. She would wait until he agreed that this was the right thing to do before showing the bags to him. She sat down and started to read her book again, but she kept putting it down over and over to drift off in her thoughts. She had to figure out what it meant to be a good wife. She thought she had some idea of what that should before. When she considered what she was doing while she had stayed with him she was satisfied that some of what she should be doing she had done, but when he took her home this time she wanted to do better. Perhaps she should ask Madeline, she wondered. True, she really didn't know the woman, but for some reason she thought that as a married woman herself, someone who had known Derek before, she would be better able to help Jenny to see what it was that she should be doing. She made a mental note to do that when she came back next time and turned back to reading her book for now. She took a deep breath while she did that and shifted about in her chair. She wanted to go outside, but the lingering summer heat was still doing just that. Lingering like an unwanted telemarketer who just wouldn't go away until you slammed the phone down and put an end to it. She knew that the heat would ease back about mid-September, but that was still too far away it seemed to her. The twins started kicking her hard again. She noticed that they always did when Brother Paul visited as well. She closed her eyes and grit her teeth at the internal abuse the two infants were inflicting on her. When they finally eased down she let the breath she was holding go. She looked down at her twenty-eight week belly. "I may want to be a good mother to you two," she said to them, "but you kids are running up such a tab that you owe me for." She heard an engine get close and then slow down. She waited until she heard it stop in her yard and heard the jeep door open before she levered herself up out of the chair. Derek was already walking toward her door when she opened it and leaned out of it a little. She felt her pulse speed up. She was so glad that he was back. Derek heard the door open and saw her duck out the door to greet him. He had only been gone a few days, but it struck him how much larger she was now. As he kissed her and felt her enthusiastic kiss in return. He stepped inside and saw how much smaller the trailer seemed to him with her in it now. She shouldn't be here anymore, he thought to himself, this isn't the right place for her, she should be with me. As she talked to him and he answered what questions she had about how Trisha was doing he looked over at the small kitchen area and realized that there was no way that Jenny and her very prominent seven month belly could even fit behind that counter anymore. He knew that this was her place, her home, but he had the strongest feeling again that she didn't belong here anymore. She saw him looking around and asked him what was on his mind. "Jenny I don't think you should stay here anymore," he said deciding to just bring it up with her. "And where should I stay Derek?" she said to him. He was pretty sure that he thought he heard a hopeful hint lingering in her voice. "Jenny if you weren't pregnant the way you are I wouldn't even consider saying this right now," he started to say. "I mean, yeah we've known each other a while now and yes we love each other but it's only been a couple of weeks since..." "Shush," she said putting her finger on his lips. "Are you asking me to move in with you for good?" she said. "Yes," he said, "I think you should. I don't think that you should be here all cramped up the way you are anymore. I think you should be home with me from now on. At least until after the babies come anyway." She didn't answer him. She went back into the bedroom and started pulling out a drawer. He followed her, but she turned around in the passageway and met him midway. "It'll have to be a little longer than that I think," she said. "The drawers here aren't big enough for them to sleep in for very long and I don't know where to put them after that." For a moment Derek thought that she was being serious when she said that. Sometimes she would say something off the wall in such a deadpan way that he wasn't sure that it was a joke or not. She leaned into him in the narrow hallway. "Yes, I'll move in with you Derek. I should be with you now," she said to him. "And I should be with you after the children come too." That sounded much more permanent to him the way she said that. He had a moments doubt flash through his mind about it and dismissed it just as quickly. The moment for that kind of doubt was before he had opened his mouth. Now that the words were out he needed to step up and walk all of that road and not quibble over it again. And he was all right with that too. She leaned up to quickly kiss him again. "Now take me home," she said to him. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Jenny looked at her empty blue bag on her and Derek's bed. After he had taken her home she had thrown it into their bedroom and left it there until that evening. She was a bit tired from all of the kicking the twins had done, but since Derek had gotten her home they seemed to have settled down a bit. She figured that they felt how she did about taking this step. That they were supposed to be here now and were much more settled as a result. After she had agreed with Derek that she should move in with him she had asked him what she should do with her trailer and everything that she had here. He suggested to her that she just move it to his house the next day. After all he had a garage behind the house as well as the carport that had been included when the house was built. He didn't see any reason why she should not just move them there until she could make a decision later about what she wanted to do. Of course she had told him yes again about that. She really didn't have any intention of doing anything else. She was his wife now and she belonged in their home. She didn't bother to say what she was going to do later when their children were born because as far as she was concerned she wouldn't be going anywhere then either. At least that was the thought that kept resurfacing in her mind when she considered this. While he went over suggestions with how they could do it, she made something quick for them to eat. He was suggesting that he just ask Mindy to join him after work the next day and between the two of them they could ferry everything she had at the trailer lot over here in one trip. She told him that sounded like a good plan and to do that. When he asked her how she wanted to do it she looked him in the eyes and told him doggy style in a sexy voice. She enjoyed watching him sputtering for a minute as his mental train was derailed. She turned over what she said to him around in her mind and decided that she wasn't joking with him in their kitchen. She smiled and told him that what they had decided so far was fine with her and now it was time for him to show her how much he had missed her. She reached over and set the timer on the oven and told him to take her to bed right now. The bag on the bed could find some other place to be. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stepbrother Sleepwalking Surprise

“Fuck me!” Nicole couldn’t believe it; she had slipped on the icy path leading up to her house, her ankle had twisted painfully, and then she had heard (and felt!) the crack of her wrist as it hit the pavement. She was overwhelmed by dueling pain sources. “Mom! MOM!” she cried out desperately. Finally her stepmother and stepbrother Cam came out and helped her inside. 4 to 6 weeks, the doctor said; that was how long she’d have to remain bedridden unless her family practically carried her...

Wish Shift Home Sweet Home

Wish Shift: Chapter Four Home, Sweet Home Year 1 A.S. Day 41 Jenny shifted a little on the new fabric. She was still not used to the truck's new seats. It had taken some effort to find a body shop that was open, but it wasn't impossible. One of the guys that dad used to work with at her shop had started his own place after he left and they threw each other work from time to time. The smell of the new upholstery flavored the interior of the cab now, giving it a whiff of new car...

Bob's Country Kitchen was a small local chain that specialized in quick lunches, but served breakfast and dinner as well. Wish Shift Dreamscapes

Wish shift: Dreamscapes 1 A.S. Day? The first thing I noticed was the reek all of the flowers. The smell of them made the air noxious with their scent. It surrounded me and seemed like it was impregnating even my clothes. It was in my hair and lingered like a thick blanket in my nose and mouth. It was sweet and warm. I could feel soft satin covering me entirely except for my hands. My fingers are bare. I wondered where it came from. I didn't own anything in satin. But it's here now,...

Wish Shift Epilogue

Wish Shift: Chapter Forty-Three Epilogue Year 1 A.S. Three Months later February Jenny held Sonya while Derek was holding Sammy. Both of them were sleeping right now, but she wouldn't put it past either of them to wake up at any moment. Kira and Dianne were standing together in their wedding dresses just to their left. Jenny had never thought that she would ever be a bridesmaid, but she had never thought that she would be a wife or a mother either just over a year ago. She...

"Just take a slow step, you can do it J.L." Jenny was across from him sitting in a chair on the other side of the exercise room that they had set up to work with their charges. Wish Shift A Woman Named Amy

Wish Shift: Chapter Thirty-Three A Woman Named Amy Year 1 A.S. Day 170 Amy had a busy day. They had left the camp earlier this morning and gotten on the road to go home. The other ladies there had gathered around her before they left, to pray the Lord strengthen her and her husband, as they ventured out into the world of the tribulation. It would not truly be safe for the Lord's people yet, but it had to be done. While she and her sisters in faith prayed, Joshua had gathered with...

Wish Shift: Chapter Eleven Zai Jian Year 1 A.S. Day 58 Night Jenny sat in her room. She had taken all of the clothing that she would not be wearing anymore and piled it on the bed. She reached for the first empty box and started to fold pants and t-shirts and carefully put them away. It was quiet now. Mom and grandma had already gone out the pop-up to go to sleep. She was by herself now, there was only the light in the room and the darkness outside her window to keep her...

Wish Shift: Chapter Nineteen Crossing the Rubicon Year 1 A.S. Day 103 Bob's was a little bit busy this morning for a Thursday. Derek had picked Jenny up at her house at the regular time for her appointment, but they still had more than an hour or so to kill when they walked into the restaurant. She had been up until almost midnight the night before and had needed to rush to the toilet sometime in the early morning hours to deal with a bout of morning sickness. The Great Shift: Togetherness By Ran Dandel It was always good to close the agency in the evening and start to unwind. Most days weren't too bad, but this one was a doozy. Since deregulation, the airlines had gone to central hubbing of their flights. It made making itineraries quite a hassle. Especially since many of the feeders arrived very close to the departure times of the main airlines'. Of course, being a travel agent wasn't all bad. After all, if you were able to make...
