Wish Shift: Chapter Twenty Seven The Things That Bind You Year 1 A.S. Day 157 Jenny looked up when Derek opened the front door. She was in the kitchen going over some of what she wanted to do with him during the next week. She put down the pad of paper that she had been writing ideas on down on the counter and walked into the living room to see why he was back so early today. She had been busy over the last few days. In fact she had only really left the house when she had to. As much as Derek would have liked to, he couldn't stay here with her every day and Jenny did go to Java Jolts with him a lot of the time, but since they were together now she also spent more time at home. She felt she needed to get things in order there too. She needed to be a good wife. She didn't know where that thought had come from or the source of the strong inclination it produced in her, but it seemed a natural enough extension of what she had recognized about herself and Derek after she had that dream. Mindy had been lying in wait for them when they finally came back from their first two days together. He had told Derek bluntly to not bother coming to work for a couple of days when Derek called him after Jenny told him to do so that first morning. When Derek told her about it later he said that was why he told Mindy to bite him. Derek told her after he got off the phone, that he had the feeling that it was more like talking to his boss than to his employee. Jenny laughed at that. She impishly reminded him that not that long ago, while they were dating, Mindy had been his boss in some pretty important ways. Then she came up to him and leaned into him and kissed him. After she finished she said in a mock serious tone that he had a new boss now though and then turned back to finish what she was doing. She liked the look on his face when she did that. She thought it looked like it was a cross between being hit between the eyes with a two by four and some degree of rapture at the idea. She giggled to herself privately, she had already experienced that sensation as both a man and a woman so she could relate all too well with it. They spent the next couple of days completely insulated from everyone with only each other and for the two of them it was right. They had to leave the house eventually though. Even though Jenny had arranged to have her schedule at the institute cleared for a few days, she still had to go back for her other appointments. Her next appointment with Dr. Warren wasn't going to go away and she really needed to talk to him about being with Derek. Even though she felt like she was walking around after winning the lottery the last couple of days there were some things she wanted to discuss about it with him. She knew that he had seen the difference between her feeling toward Derek when they came into his office, even before she passionately kissed him before going in. She wasn't so besotted by with being with Derek as his girlfriend, that she was unaware that just walking beside him now was completely different to even the most oblivious stranger. They started into talking about it right away and after the session she felt a whole lot better about what she had been feeling. The idea of becoming a woman like her mother was something that she could be happy with. And it was an easier idea for her to accept. Like all ideas that you had already found a place for inside of yourself, defining it only made putting it into the overall context of your life less complicated. She said goodbye to Dr. Warren after their session concluded and took Derek's arm and leaned into him for the rest of their walk to his Jeep. She didn't have anything she needed to do for the rest of the day and even though he wasn't going to stay for very long, Derek wanted to go to Java Jolts to check up on things before he took her back to the trailer to get a few more of her things for the next couple of days. They walked into Java Jolts and hadn't taken more than two steps inside before Mindy and some of the other regulars there pulled out some noisemakers and small horns left over from New Year's and cut loose at the same time. It was an incredible din and casual customers looked startled as they were taken unaware by the sudden disturbance. Jenny could feel confetti and balloons dropping from a sheet attached to the ceiling above them while the celebration echoed in the room around them. Jenny felt her face reddening even though she was kind of pleased that they had gone to this little extreme. She looked up at the homemade banner that had unfurled behind them after it had released the confetti and balloons. In big red letters someone, probably Mindy, had written 'About time! Congratulations Derek and Jenny' on it. Some of the other customers that were not regulars were kind of out of it since they didn't know what was going on, but they had joined in with the general noise the regulars were making anyway. Derek looked back at the banner and then down into Jenny's eyes. He brushed some of the confetti out of Jenny's hair. "Mindy killing time?" she asked him looking up at him with a big smile on her face. "Mindy killing time," he said back to her. They both started making their way through the small crowd aiming for the laughing redhead behind the counter. Derek flipped up the walk through section and made a half bow to her. "Ladies first," he said as she went behind the counter. "Rangers lead the way," she said back to him with half wink and a little smirk. Mindy didn't even bother trying to run. He just started applauding them with the rest of the regulars joining in as well. He gave Jenny a quick hug and then stepped back and asked Derek when the wedding was going to be. Derek told him to bite him again and as things started to settle down a bit Jenny realized that Derek had not said anything back to Mindy that denied that there would be a wedding. And she was good with that. She didn't go back to Java Jolts for the next couple of times after that though. She needed to get settled into what she and Derek were going to become together now that they had stopped being just friends. As she spent the next few days at their house. She thought about how that this was almost exactly a repeat what she had done with Sonya when they first started being together as a couple. She felt that same euphoria and even though she was on the woman's side of this relationship, the same warm glow she had felt as James gave her an inner comfort that this was exactly the right step for her to take for them. It just felt right for both of them and they fell naturally into it even thought there was no discussion by either of them about whether or not this just staying together like this the right thing to do. That discussion was over in the moment their eyes met the morning after they woke together. They had both just accepted that this was how things would be now and the way they both felt at the end of the day when she curled up against him in their bed confirmed it for them. He wanted her here and she wanted to be here and that was enough. But the bachelor kitchen wasn't the only thing that had to go she decided while she was settling in there. Now that she was going to be part of his life she was going to do it completely. Derek had lived in this house all of his life. His parents had left their mark on it, his aunt Dina had as well and Derek had made it his own after she was gone. But that needed to change now. Jenny wasn't going to overhaul his whole house, she had always hated that when a new girlfriend did it to her. It was annoying after it got past the 'oh that's cute phase' and she had no intention of remaking what was his just to suit her, but she was going to make a place for herself here. She spent more time familiarizing herself with how he had set things up rather than making it over in her image. But for some reason though, especially over the last couple of days, she found herself kind of focused on being a good wife while she was doing this. She didn't know where the thought had come from. She had just been happy with the idea that they were together and she was his girlfriend now. As much as she reveled in being here with him she knew that she wasn't going to be here all of the time. And toward the end of the week she was looking with regret about when she would have to go back to her trailer and get back into her paused routine. Then for some reason, she didn't know why, she found that she couldn't think of herself as anything other than Derek's wife now. She knew that she had said that she wanted to marry him to her mother and she still remembered the intensity of how that realization had gripped her after having her own feelings come into crystal clarity. But it felt different to her now, like it was already an accomplished fact. She had a certainty of its actuality stemming inside of her and she didn't know where it had came from. She knew she wanted this, that wasn't the problem. And she knew that it would likely be before them as the next step as well, but she also knew that she shouldn't even be thinking about that the finality that she was right now. She knew she loved him and she wanted to be with him, but she also knew that they had just started this part of their relationship. It was too soon for her to be having that kind of thought about them, even if it was just her flittering daydream of that future life looping and fluttering in her mind like a playful bird. Sure she had already told mom that she wanted to marry him. If he decided to ask her the way she felt already she was pretty sure that she wouldn't hesitate too long before saying yes. But the last couple of days, when she was thinking of their relationship, it was as if being married to each other was something that was already done and she didn't know where that certainty had come from. And it should have bothered her, but the same certainty was also telling her that it was not worth worrying over. Derek stepped through the door and closed it behind him. He looked seriously bothered when she came up to him to kiss him hello. She saw the look on his face and knew that something serious had happened even before he said anything. She didn't let him try to stumble his way over how to bring up what was bothering him and asked him what it was. Derek asked her to sit down and when they had done so he said that he needed to go to Asheville right away. He would be leaving as soon as he could get his things here in order for the trip. "Why do you need to go to Asheville?" she asked him, a little thrown aback by how upset he was. Jenny had never seen him like this the entire time she had known him. "Is it something to do with someone in your family?" she asked hoping that it wasn't too bad. Derek nodded and said it was family, but not the blood kind. He said he was sorry, but he had to go immediately and got up from where he was on the couch. Derek had already walked into their bedroom and had started putting clothes into a small travel bag while they were talking. Jenny was getting worried for him, she followed him back there and sat on the bed listening to him as he packed. "It's Trisha McGillan," he said reaching into the closet for another pair of shoes and stuffing them into the bag. "She was the last woman that my aunt Dina was in a long term relationship with before Dina died." "Were you that close with her then?" she asked reaching into a dresser drawer to hand him some socks. "She was almost like my other aunt," he said taking the socks and stowing them away. "So what happened to her?" she asked. "Him," Derek corrected her, "she shifted into a thirty-eight year old black man," As they talked while he threw more things into his bag she found out that Trisha had moved to Asheville after Dina's funeral and had kept in touch with Derek pretty much afterward. Trisha had also changed from being a gay woman to being a gay man as well as becoming slightly younger and black. She asked him what had happened. He told her that Trisha was in the hospital now. Someone had attacked him last night and had beaten him severely, robbed him and left him for dead in the bushes behind the ATM. "I'd like you to come with me," he said finishing packing the bag and zipping it closed, "but I'm not sure that you could. I'm going to be staying with Arnie at their place and I don't know how much room they have. I haven't met him, but I'll probably be couch surfing as it is while I'm there." Jenny did want to go with him. She could see how much this had affected him and she wanted to be there for him like he had been there for her already in so many ways. She told him that she didn't mind doing that to be with him for something like this and reached for her blue bag. "Are you sure?" he asked. "I'm kind of leery about traveling too far from your doctors. You're pretty far along and what about J.L.?" he asked her. She put the bag down and admitted that was something to be concerned about, but she wanted to be with him for this. Derek told her it still concerned him and she said that if it really was on his mind that way that she could just stay here for the few days he was gone and get a taxi for what she needed to do. She didn't want to be a bother to him. He stopped cold. "Don't ever say that you're a bother Jenny," he said. That is the last thing you are. I just am worried about Trisha and I don't want anything to happen to you." She told him she would be all right and said that he should get finished packing while she got some of the perishables out of the fridge to take to her trailer while he was gone. They stashed everything in the jeep and left after locking up the house. The rest of the way back to the trailer park she tried to reassure him that she would be all right and that when he got back it would be okay for the both of them. She finally got him to settle down about her and focus on what was important right now, but she could see that he was torn about leaving her behind and at the same time he couldn't not go. He dropped her off at her place on the way to the highway and gave her a deep kiss goodbye. He promised to call her as soon as he got there and keep her posted as soon as he knew what the situation there was. She watched him pull away and stood by the roadside until the red taillights of his jeep turned at the top of the hill and disappeared from sight. She carried the bags of perishables into her trailer and started putting them into the fridge. She was already missing him. By the time she had gotten ready to slip into her bed that evening, Derek had already called her to let her know that he had gotten to Arnie's place in Asheville safely and would be going to the hospital with him in the morning. The only good thing she could see about something like this happening now, was that it was easier to move around between cities with martial law finally being relaxed to a degree during the last couple of months. Derek didn't need to go to the military provost for this sector and get their countersignature for him to get on the highway and go on his way now. The checkpoints on the interstate would log his passage and he would be asked a few questions, but it was something that most people put up with out of necessity for the moment. There was already pressure from the population now that most people had already been accounted for and could be reasonably identified as to who they now were to end it. But inertia had set in and there was still a way to go before this unwelcome change spawned by the Shift had passed. For now there were still checkpoints and inquiries made that slowed down a traveler's free movement along the highways. Even with the reduced traffic on the highways it had still taken Derek nearly six hours to get there. He had gone directly to the hospital as soon as visiting hours opened for them. Arnie told him that they had let him stay there the first night after Trisha was brought in, but the staff made him go home and get some sleep after it was clear that Trisha had stabilized. It was pretty bad. Arnie told Derek that Trisha had lost her right eye and most of the use of her left arm in the attack. "It wasn't a robbery," he told her when he called Jenny. "They may have taken his money, but what they wanted was to do what they did to him," he said. She could hear his cold anger over the phone and she shared it. She told him that she loved him and she wished she had come with him there anyway. He told her he loved her as well and he would be back as soon as he could. She thought of the two scumbags who had tried to rape her. True she had met Derek that way, but considering what it had almost cost her she still had some regrets sometimes about not just putting them down. She tried to put that thought out of her mind and eventually slipped into sleep. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Year 1 A.S. Day 158 Jenny called a taxi in the morning. She didn't have much to do that day, but even as she worked her way through what she was needing to do she still couldn't really focus as much on that. She had never been one of those people who spend most of their waking moments glued to the screen of her smart phone. She actually thought that was kind of a bad contradiction to be connected to so many and isolated at the same time. She had ridden the subways in Shenzhen and watched the people around her doing that while they blocked out the world around them and had its confines shrink to the tiny screen in front of them. It wasn't that she hadn't caught up on the news or read a book or played a stupid little game herself, she did like everyone else had done when they had time and that particular outlet at her disposal. But she had also spent time just riding and watching the people around her as well. Maybe that was just who she was or maybe it was a result of living there as a foreigner that made her more willing to look up at what was around her. This was really the first time though, that she felt compelled to spend every little bit of time that she had to occupy her attention with constantly referencing her phone. When she thought about it she seemed to spend a lot more time checking her phone for texts from Derek and sending him texts of her own today. Derek didn't mind her constant stream of messages though and he was keeping her posted as much as she found herself asking about it. It still wasn't that good. Trisha had been taken off of the critical list shortly after he was admitted, but he was still in ICU. The doctors didn't want to move him until he had fully regained consciousness, but Trisha was still out of it. He had drifted back into consciousness for a few minutes late last night, but the pain meds they had him on put him right back under before long. She thought about going to Java Jolts for the rest of the evening, and had gotten a taxi to take her there, but once she got there she couldn't stay for more than a couple of hours. She was just too restless and being there while Derek was away just reminded her of that, rather than letting her relax and not be by herself. Mindy and Jamaal were behind the counter and they both asked her what the latest was from Derek. Mindy had met Trisha a couple of times when he passed through town and had stopped in to visit Derek before the Shift. He was more than a little bothered that something like this had happened to him. He thought that Trisha was a good person and didn't deserve what had been done to him. He asked Jenny what she was going to do to get around while Derek was up in Asheville. She told him that she had gotten them to reduce her sessions at the institute and was just relying on a taxi for a couple of days until Derek got back. Mindy made her promise that she would call him if she needed a ride. Jenny appreciated the offer and thanked him and told him she would if she needed one. She had wanted to spend much longer there, but with the heat from the slowly fading summer and her own feelings of restlessness piling onto her she called a taxi early in the afternoon and was home not long after it picked her up. Even though the summer heat had started to ease off over the last week or so it was still pretty hot most days and she could feel the heat's effect on her when she went out. She went into the small common room of her trailer and turned the A/C on and settled into the chair to read for a while. The knock on her door pulled her out of the middle of where she was in 'The Maltese Falcon. She had seen the movie on one of the classic movie channels and had made a point of putting reading it on her list of things to do when she had the chance to do so. She slid a slip of cardboard that she used as a bookmark in between the pages and put it on the counter before she stood up and walked to the door. "Good evening, Jenny," Brother Paul said when she opened the door. "Derek called us and asked if we could find the time to check in on you while he was away attending to that terrible business in Asheville. May we come in?" he asked. Brother Paul was accompanied by a woman only a little taller than Jenny. She stood silently to one side of Brother Paul and had not said a word yet. He wasn't a stranger and she did know him to some small degree. She knew that he had been at Derek's house to talk with him there once while Derek was out, but she didn't really remember too much about his brief visit. It must have not been that memorable she figured. And Derek hadn't mentioned anything about this to her, but it may have just slipped his mind because of everything else that was going on. Jenny stepped back and let the both of them come into her small room. "Derek didn't mention anything about him asking anyone to check in with me," she said to him. "Brother Derek called me a short while ago. I apologize for not getting here earlier to check on you, but I thought it best to wait until sister Madeline was able to come along with me." He indicated the woman beside him. "After all, it would not look right for me to be visiting a young woman such as yourself without another woman present." Jenny didn't care about that one way or the other. She may be a woman now, but she still didn't think that being concerned about that sort of appearance of scandal would stop the speculations of small minded people anyway. And more important, with everything else that had happened, she didn't think many people were getting too hung up on appearances like they might have before the Shift. "Isn't she looking well Madeline," he said. "I must say it is good to see a young mother like yourself so attentive to her babies well being," Madeline murmured quiet agreement to Brother Paul's sentiments. "I want to be a good responsible mother," Jenny said in response to him without thinking why she should do so. "Of course you do," Brother Paul said. "And have you taken your pre- natal vitamins today?" he asked. "You know how much your babies need that extra support from you, especially now." "No," she said, "I haven't taken them yet. I've been distracted while keeping up with what's happening with Trisha," she said to him. "Perhaps you should tend to that now my dear," he said smoothly. Brother Paul watched Jenny get up and go back to her bedroom. She came back and made her way behind the counter of her kitchen with a little difficulty to get some water to take her dark gelatin capsule with. He watched her swallow it without qualm and was pretty pleased that the initial conditioning had taken so well. Getting Derek to leave her alone though, so he would have the opportunity to take this next step had taken a little more effort. Of course he knew about Derek's aunt's sinful paramour. Even though he had failed to keep Derek in the church's sphere, he had kept track of the people who were in his life. It had been nothing more complicated for him than the making of a phone call to arrange for the chastisement of that particular sinner. So many misguided souls, since the Rapture had swept over the world, had begun echoing the heresy that these sinful ones who were like Derek's aunt were not choosing to be the way they were. The blasphemers had often said before the tribulation. But the example of Dina's paramour had made it so very clear to Brother Paul that they were the ones still deep in denial. Here was a woman who had chosen to reject her natural desires as well as her proper path and willfully move to sin against the Lord's design for her. The Rapture had placed her into the body of a man and once she had accepted her role as a man she could have continued to satisfy her desire for women within the proper boundaries. Instead though, he had clung to his sin and deliberately set out to still choose to continue lusting for improper flesh to debauch himself with. No Brother Paul did not regret the necessity of that sinful one being punished. The punishment of that sinner had served the purpose of the Church for now and later he would be forced to confront his own sinful and deviant nature and repent. Brother Derek often thought of how they should implement the cleansing wave after the Lord had given the land over to them and as much as such considerations usually brought him pleasure he had other priorities at the moment. When he had seen Derek the other day he had made certain to ensure that he had consumed a dose of the Water of Truth while they were speaking. Expressing concern for the welfare of that sinner in Asheville had made Derek very open to leaving his little mud woman at her home for a few days while he was away. Brother Paul needed this opportunity to speak with her alone and help bring her life a little more in line with the Lord's plan for her. He probably didn't have to use the drug on Derek, but he wanted to be sure that there would be no interference from him having any reluctance to depart and thus interfere with what he had planned for this woman. "Jenny," he said to her after she stopped talking. "You trust your husband don't you?" "Yes I do Brother Paul," she answered. "Your husband trusted us to care for you while he is away Jenny," he lied. "I'm don't know about that, he really doesn't care much for church types," she said. "If you trust him, you should trust that what he has decided is best for you, shouldn't you?" "I do trust him." "He only wants what is best for you." "I know he does." "He wants to take care of you "Yes." "He loves you." "I love him too." "He asked us to look in on you and take care of you, so you should trust us as well." "If that's what he wants, then I will," she said softly. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bob's Country Kitchen was a small local chain that specialized in quick lunches, but served breakfast and dinner as well. Wish Shift Dreamscapes

Wish shift: Dreamscapes 1 A.S. Day? The first thing I noticed was the reek all of the flowers. The smell of them made the air noxious with their scent. It surrounded me and seemed like it was impregnating even my clothes. It was in my hair and lingered like a thick blanket in my nose and mouth. It was sweet and warm. I could feel soft satin covering me entirely except for my hands. My fingers are bare. I wondered where it came from. I didn't own anything in satin. But it's here now,...

Wish Shift When Shadows Burn

Wish Shift: Chapter Thirty-Seven When Shadows Burn Year 1 A.S. Day 192 Day 237 of Jenny's pregnancy Brother Paul kept driving past Derek's home. Derek's jeep was there parked under the carport, but it was the other car there that made him abandon stopping in as an option. He fumed as he drove down the road. Who could that possibly be that was there? And why were they here now of all times? He sensed the hand of the devil in this and considered that he might have to call Brother...

Wish Shift A Woman Named Amy

Wish Shift: Chapter Thirty-Three A Woman Named Amy Year 1 A.S. Day 170 Amy had a busy day. They had left the camp earlier this morning and gotten on the road to go home. The other ladies there had gathered around her before they left, to pray the Lord strengthen her and her husband, as they ventured out into the world of the tribulation. It would not truly be safe for the Lord's people yet, but it had to be done. While she and her sisters in faith prayed, Joshua had gathered with...

Wish Shift Zai Jian

Wish Shift: Chapter Eleven Zai Jian Year 1 A.S. Day 58 Night Jenny sat in her room. She had taken all of the clothing that she would not be wearing anymore and piled it on the bed. She reached for the first empty box and started to fold pants and t-shirts and carefully put them away. It was quiet now. Mom and grandma had already gone out the pop-up to go to sleep. She was by herself now, there was only the light in the room and the darkness outside her window to keep her...

Wish Shift Crossing the Rubicon

Wish Shift: Chapter Nineteen Crossing the Rubicon Year 1 A.S. Day 103 Bob's was a little bit busy this morning for a Thursday. Derek had picked Jenny up at her house at the regular time for her appointment, but they still had more than an hour or so to kill when they walked into the restaurant. Bob waved to Jenny and Derek as they came in the door, but he didn't come over. There were too many people cycling through the place at the moment. Jenny was pretty sure that if he got a...

Wish Shift: Chapter Twenty One The Sand Between Her Toes Year 1 A.S. Day 115 "Hang on I want to ask Derek if he can get away," she said. Jenny quickly dialed Derek and talked to him for a few minutes and then hung up. "Derek can't come," she said obviously disappointed. "He can't get away from the shop today. If you had given us more notice he probably could have," she said turning back to packing her beach bag. Kira glanced at Dianne. She'd noticed the us in that sentence...

Wish Shift: Chapter Three Armistice Year 1 A.S. Day 38 Jenny didn't know how long she was leaning against mom crying. Mom just let her lean against him until her tears stopped. "It was your grandmother who pointed it out to me," he said after Jenny's tears ceased and she calmed down again. "She said to me a couple of days ago that you were acting just like a couple friends of hers had after their husbands died. She said that they tried to freeze as much of their life as...

Wish Shift: Chapter Eight Pathways Year 1 A.S. Day 46 Jenny heard the car pull into her lot in the dim glow of light just before dawn. She had been up until almost midnight the night before and had needed to rush to the toilet sometime in the early morning hours to deal with a bout of morning sickness. Those had been coming less frequently this last week and she was starting to hope that she may be close to parting ways with this particular aspect of being a woman soon. Leaning...

Wish Shift: Adjustments 1 A.S. Day 147 When Derek got out of the shower, he was still half in amazement at Jenny. He toweled himself dry and wrapped the damp towel around himself. He figured he might as well make the bed after he put some clothes on. He really wanted to do something nice for Jenny today, but right now he couldn't think of what it should be. He found himself thinking about what she had told him about Sonya and that brought him back to last night and what she said to...

Wish Shift : Chapter Ten Tabula Rasa Year 1 A.S. Day 56 Before they went to Dr. Waverly's, Kira and Dianne took her to get a couple of new sets of clothes. Jenny had already apologized to them for being angry with how they reacted to her risking herself and the twins, but there were still some dark feelings swimming around them. She was still out of sorts herself as well. She was wearing the last of her inherited bras and in the last couple of days it had been much too tight for...

Wish Shift: Chapter Twelve Revelations Year 1 A.S. Day 65 Sam looked around the outside dining area at Java Jolts. "You know I don't usually go to places like this," she said. The tables were pulled up close to the plate glass of the front window and on the edge of the sidewalk there were some planters with greenery spilling over the concrete sides. "I know,"...

Wish Shift: Chapter Eighteen Two By Moonlight Year 1 A.S. Day 92 Jenny slowed the truck down and stopped. The little ticket booth at the gate had peeling white paint on its wooden walls and there were a few scattered weeds growing at the base of the small building. Wish Shift Reunion

Part One The Winter of her Heart Wish Shift: Chapter One Reunions 1 A.S. Day 32 She was still trying to sleep. It wasn't her first international trip. The problem was, even with all of the shades down on the windows, you could still see the outline of daylight around them. But considering what made that extra room...

The Great Shift Togetherness

The Great Shift: Togetherness By Ran Dandel It was always good to close the agency in the evening and start to unwind. Most days weren't too bad, but this one was a doozy. Since deregulation, the airlines had gone to central hubbing of their flights. It made making itineraries quite a hassle. Especially since many of the feeders arrived very close to the departure times of the main airlines'. Of course, being a travel agent wasn't all bad. After all, if you were able to make...

Stepping out into the beautiful sunny afternoon, heading toward the group of waiting yellow school buses I breathed a sigh of relief. I was glad school was finished. Throughout High School like a ship at sea, I had plotted my course, studying hard. However, the Scholarship that many felt I had rightfully won had somehow ended up going to one of...
