What Can't Be Unseen
Year 1 A.S. Day 185
"He said what to you?" Danny asked L.J.
"He said that both of us needed to be ready to leave school soon," L.J.
said. "Do we really have to leave school now grandma?" he asked. "It
just started up again and I don't need any more breaks if I am going to
graduate with the rest of the class next year."
The school's summer break had been shorter this year because of making
up for the chaos that the Shift had caused at the tail end of the school
year. Even though they had gone back for a couple of weeks just before
the break, that had been more to get the student body accustomed to
going to school in their new bodies and doing something that was normal
before in their new identities than it was about completing academic
requirements.
The abbreviated return had ended just before the beginning of July and
they had taken that month off and just resumed at the normal time in
early August. Jake had been thriving more or less now that he was back
in school. Mr. Emilio had been a very fit man with all of the hard labor
he had done for so many years and now Jake was having very little
difficulty to adjusting to his new circumstances.
He was planning to try out for the football team when try-outs were
announced. While school was now back in session, the athletic program
was still off to a slow start. Some of those who had been on the team
before, now had no idea what they should be doing and some of them were
completely uninterested in doing so. Others were completely unsuited for
this particular sport now physically and were exploring other sports
that their new physiques were better suited to.
While no play schedule had been announced there was talk of getting up
some intramural competition between the teams when they were rebuilt,
just as a means of letting those who wished to play gain some valuable
experience on the field. Although there was also a severe lack of
cheerleaders as well as players, a reduced squad was now being formed
for that as well.
"I really am not sure that your mother is going to be in a position to
do that anytime soon," he said. "The court still has to be satisfied
that your father is no longer a threat to yours and Mattie's well
being." Danny was pretty sure that would take a long time to go through.
Dianne had spoken to Judge Gillespie immediately after their family
conference and after hearing what Dianne had to say he had agreed that
there were more than enough irregularities in what they had seen as
family to bring to the attention of the social services advocate
assigned to this case.
What they had reported to the court had slowed Joshua and Amy's petition
to a crawl and from what was said by those two in earshot of the rest of
the family, that had not gone over well with them. It had also resulted
in them bringing in a lawyer from their new church as well. That man had
immediately flooded the court with a barrage of petitions to have the
order revoked under religious freedom grounds. So far the court had been
slow walking those requests.
"He also told us not to speak to them like that," L.J. said.
"Like what?" Danny asked.
"He insists that we should refer to him as dad now and if we slip up and
not call dad mom now, he gets kind of uptight about it."
"L.J., you're just going to have to get used to that I think," Danny
said.
"If he insists that you call him dad and Amy mom that doesn't seem like
anything that you need to be begging trouble for."
"I guess not," L.J. said, "and it's not like we haven't been calling
those bodies mom and dad already before all of this."
Danny asked L.J. to hand him some of the seasoning from the rack. He
wanted to get these ribs into the marinade for at least an hour before
Sam got home with Mattie and started them on the grill for tonight.
"It's just that dad seemed awful sure that we would be back home with
them sometime around next Wednesday or so."
This was news to Danny. He stopped rubbing the seasonings into the ribs
and asked him how Joshua was so sure about it that he would tell little
Jake about it in that way.
Little Jake told him that his lawyer was certain that the court would be
forced to rule in their favor then at the earliest and even if it didn't
they would be back with them very soon anyway.
"So what does that have to do with you and Mattie leaving school?" Danny
asked him.
"Dad said that as soon as we were back, he had already made arrangements
for us to go to some camp, the Friday after the court made its ruling.
He said we both had reserved slots," Little Jake said.
Danny pushed the racks of ribs away into a corner of the counter. "I
think you better tell me a little more about what he was saying," he
said.
Little Jake looked a bit uncomfortable now. He really didn't want to be
the one telling this to Danny and he could see that he was starting to
feel a little bit of regret that he had even brought it up.
"When dad was here to see us last time, when Mattie went in to get you
and let you know that the coals on the grill were just about ready, he
said that as soon as we were back that Mattie was going to get real help
for his problem. He said it funny too," Little Jake said half turning
away.
Danny knew that gesture. Kim had made it when she was a little girl and
she had been maneuvered into making an admission that she didn't feel
right speaking about.
"How did he say it exactly?" he asked, being very careful to keep his
emotions out of his words.
Little Jake looked away and tried to delay saying it.
"I need to know Jake," he said. "This affects your sister."
Danny knew putting to him like that would get his attention and it did.
"He said that... once he was back under the family's roof... that would
be the end of outsiders... interfering... with Mattie learning what he
needed to know now. He said that once he was in the camp he would be
fine from then on, because after he came home, when he was finished
there, he would have no doubt about who and what he was ever again."
Little Jake looked at Danny. "He scared me when he said that grandma.
When he was talking, all I could think was that he sounded just like
dad. You know the way she was before she went into that place."
Danny looked at Little Jake. He couldn't show him just how much what he
just told him truly frightened him. He knew that he needed to call
Dianne as soon as possible and let her know about this new development.
And especially of the threat that Joshua was voicing about Mattie.
"I'm glad you told me Jake," he said. "I needed to know this. Your
sister is needing real help and she won't get that from the place that
your parents are talking about."
Little Jake looked slightly relieved, but he could tell that he was
still much more bothered than he had let on to Danny.
"Don't mention that you told me about this," he said reaching for the
ribs again. "But don't worry, none of us will let anything happen to
your sister. She'll get the real help she needs, not something that will
make it worse." He handed Jake some more of the rub.
"Now you take care of getting this ready," he said. "If your grandpa
gets back and these ribs aren't ready to go on the grill she's going to
give us both hell for it."
"Ok grandma," he said and started rubbing the spices into the meat.

Year 1 A.S. Day 191
"Mom, dad I think it's you who are not really understanding things
here," he said, his voice tinged with an undercurrent of anger.
"Little Jake and Mattie are my sons, not yours. I'll make the decision
about what is best for them and that does not include some witch doctor
poking around in Mattie's head and planting a lot of false ideas that
make having him accept the truth about himself that much more
difficult."
Danny just listened to that and decided not to say anything just now.
L.J. was right. It was like listening to Jake before she went away. When
it came to this issue Joshua had become downright unreasonable and the
only thing that Danny could see as being responsible, was that place
that both of them had gone to. Amy wasn't even anywhere to be seen. She
was off somewhere keeping out of the way. When she had come into
Joshua's study shortly after they had gotten there to talk with the both
of them about it he had asked her to listen to what they had to say and
tell them what she thought.
Amy had refused outright. She said that she had no business saying
anything when it came to the welfare of their children. That was her
husband's decision and as a woman she needed to obey him in matters like
this. Joshua thanked her for saying that and told her that she didn't
need to be here for the rest of this conversation. Amy had quickly
scurried out of the study and had not been seen since.
"And another thing," he said. "I know that it has been you that has been
working to delay this. The lawyer that the Brother's recommended told me
that the objections that social services has been raising can only come
from family members. He told me he has seen it happen thousands of times
in matters like this."
He fixed them with a basilisk stare. "It won't work any better for you
that it did in any of those other cases. As their parents we have a lot
of precedent on our side when it comes to those trying to interfere with
a parent expressing their desire to exercise their rights in determining
what is correct in how their children are raised."
"Don't try to stand in the way of this happening," he said. "You'll both
see that this was the right thing to do when Mattie and Jake both are
happy and content with who they are when it's done."
Danny started to get up and started to suggest to Sam that it wasn't
worth even continuing this discussion. Joshua was beyond any reasonable
measure of being reached by them.
Joshua got up as well, but he was more interested in making them stay
and listen to what he had decided than in explaining why it should be
done at all.
"Mom, dad this is going to happen. Their place has already been reserved
for them the moment the court rules in our favor. I've already made
plans to pull them out of school the same day and they'll be safely in
the program as soon as we can get them there. So you need to have
them..."
His phone interrupted his tirade. He picked it up and quickly answered
it. He told whoever it was to wait a moment and he'd take care of it
right now. He walked out from behind the desk and over to the sliding
doors that led into the study.
He stepped through and just before he closed them, he ducked his head
back in and told them not to leave he had more to say to them as soon as
he took care of this matter.
Danny looked at Sam. "I don't care what he thinks he has to say, I've
heard enough."
"I heard enough two minutes after he opened his mouth," Sam said. "I
don't care what he says, that camp did this to the two of them and I
will never let Mattie or Jake near those fuckers."
She stood up. "Let's go," she said and started walking toward the closed
sliding doors. She started to open them and then quickly waved Danny
over.
She pointed outside of the doors in a way that told Danny he needed to
look right now. Danny looked out of the crack and saw Joshua swallowing
one of those black capsules that he had seen Amy take earlier.
He washed it down with some water and picked up the phone and started
talking with whoever it was about what he had just been telling them. He
kept speaking in an animated way and they both could hear the level of
anger in his voice rising and then it was gone.
The look on his face dropped away and it seemed like someone had just
let the air out of him. His posture slumped and he began speaking in a
toneless dull manner. They couldn't really hear what he was saying
clearly, but it sounded to both of them that he was simply repeating
what, whoever was talking to him was telling him.
They slid the doors open as quietly as possible and crept closer. Joshua
didn't even notice them. They heard him telling whoever it was that, yes
it was important for the children to come and they would go immediately.
Most of what he was saying was related to this in one form or another.
After he finished speaking he disconnected the call and just stood there
with a blank look on his face.
"You see," Sam said, "That's just what I saw when that happened with
Amy."
"But she said those were pre-natal vitamins, Joshua has no business
taking anything like that," Danny said.
"I'm going to try something," Sam said. She walked over to where he was
standing silent with his phone in his hands.
"Joshua," she said to him.
"Yes," he said in that dead toneless way.
"I don't think we need to talk any more today," she said.
"No, we don't," he agreed.
"I think you should go into your study and think about how you should
treat your parents with honor and respect just like the Lord says you
should," she told him.
"Yes, children should treat their parents with respect," he said.
"I think you should go do that now," she finished.
"I will," he said and started walking back to his study. He nearly
walked over Danny and his eyes remained fixed and glassy. He showed not
even a glimmer of recognition for either of them.
"We need to look at those pills," Danny said after he closed the doors.
"Whatever it is, it's not what they say it is and I think it's pretty
obvious from that little show that it's got a hell of a lot to do with
this."
"Do you know where they keep them?" Sam asked him.
"Yes I do," Danny said and started walking over to the little bathroom
that Amy had reserved for herself.

Danny found the pills right where he had seen Amy put them. He asked Sam
to find a plastic baggie and he opened the bottle and took six of them
out. It was still over half full, so he didn't think that what they had
taken would be noticed.
Sam handed him the baggie and Danny dumped them into it and sealed it
tight. "We need to go now," he said.
They walked out of the house and got into the car. Neither of them said
a word. Amy had made herself scarce, but that didn't mean that she might
not be watching and listening. Only after they were safely away and
there was no chance of anyone hearing them did either of them speak.
"I have never seen anything like that ever," Sam said. "And the way he
just did what I told him to do. Danny we need to do something about this
now."
Danny stopped the car at the traffic light and pulled the baggie with
the capsules out of his pocket.
"Whatever this is, it's not what they said it was. And from the way he
was acting there is no way that there is anything good about this shit,"
Danny pushed the bag back into his pocket.
The light turned green and he started driving again. "I've been a nurse
for a lot of years, Sam," he said. "And I have never seen a drug
reaction like that ever. For any kind of drug."
"He was like a goddamn zombie," Sam said. "And you know that place they
went to is responsible for this. If I didn't want Mattie near these
people before, you can double that feeling now. Those fuckers wouldn't
hesitate to use this on him. We can't let that happen Danny," She
insisted.
"We're not going to," he said. "Call Amelia, I don't care what she is
doing we need her to look at this shit right now. Maybe it's something
she will recognize."

Year 1 A.S. Day 191
Amelia told them to bring the sample they had take to her at the V.A.
There was no way that she could get off of her shift right now. She had
already been working doubles because of the staffing problem. It had
gotten a little easier, but it was still not any way close to normal.
She joked about it sometimes. She said that whoever had chosen to switch
her must have known that she would need the extra energy from being this
young would give her.
She took them aside into an examination room and asked them what was so
important. She could tell that, whatever it was, it had spooked the hell
out of Sam and just by doing that she knew that she knew this was a drop
everything and come now moment.
Danny told her about what they had seen through the sliding doors and
what had happened during the phone call and even more important after
the call was finished.
They told her that they had gotten a few of the capsules for her to look
at. Danny repeated that he didn't recognize whatever this drug was, but
thought that Amelia would have better luck since she dealt with a larger
variation of medications here than Danny did as a school nurse.
Amelia took one of the capsule out of the bag with a pair of tweezers
and placed it in a sample cup. She used the pointed end to move it
around and check for anything that could tell her what this was. After a
few minutes of examination she picked it back up and put it back into
the bag.
"I don't see anything to identify this anywhere," she said. "Usually
there should be a code somewhere on the casing so you can make sure you
have the right medication. And I have never seen any medication shipped
in a black capsule like this." She handed the bag back to Danny.
"I've never seen anything like this drug in the VA system, and I've seen
a lot of medications come and go over the years. But I also know I've
seen this before recently," She said.
"I have the same exact feeling," Danny said. "I knew that when I saw Amy
taking it, that for some reason it was familiar, but for the life of me
I just can't place where it is that I know this shit from."
"What did Amy say when you asked her about this?" Amelia asked.
Before Danny could say anything Amelia answered her own question.
"Pre-natal vitamins," she said.
"Yes, that's it exactly," Danny said. "That's why it seemed so weird
that Joshua was taking them.
"The good news is I know exactly where we both saw these things," Amelia
said. "The bad news is we saw them at Jenny's."
"Are you certain," Sam asked both of them.
"I am," Amelia said, "I asked her about them when I saw the bottle in
her bathroom with her other stuff."
"I thought they were a pill, not a gelatin capsule," Danny admitted. I
didn't look them over too closely. I was thinking they were an iron
supplement that they had her on."
"We both saw what we expected to see," Amelia said. "If there was a
problem with her, then we would have paid closer attention, but it has
been looking good with her pregnancy, so we let it pass."
She looked at the bag in Danny's hand. "Now what are we going to do
about it?"
"I think the first thing is that we get this to the social services
advocate and tell them what we saw. Stopping these bastards from getting
their hands on Mattie and Jake is the most important thing we can do,"
Sam said.
"She's right," Amelia agreed. "Whoever is in charge of that case needs
to know that this is not just a case of parents who went loopy on
religion and there is severe danger for these children if they get them
in their custody."
"And after that, what?" Danny asked.
"I think that the advocate will probably send you to the cops right
away. Whatever this shit is it can't be legal."
"What about Jenny?" Danny asked.
"Consider this triage," Amelia said to him. "Jenny has this stuff, we
know that. And she's probably taking it. But even if we go down there
this minute we still don't know what we're dealing with. I think you
should look at getting to Jenny as soon as you see the cops."
Danny put the baggie back in her pocket and told Amelia that they would
call her as soon as they were done speaking with the child advocate.
They walked out of the hospital and across the parking lot to their car.
"Have you seen Jenny take these things?" Sam asked him.
Danny shook his head and said that he only had seen them in her
possession and that he had never seen her take them.
"Do you think Derek is taking them?" she asked him.
Danny said he didn't know, but the bottle that he saw had a prescription
label on it for Jenny. They got into the car and drove to the social
service advocate's office.

It was worse than they expected when they got there. The advocate, a
black woman in her early fifties told them that the judge had already
told her that, without some compelling reason to do otherwise, he would
have no choice but to grant the motion to lift the restraining order in
the next couple of days.
Danny laid the baggie of black capsules on her desk and told her
everything that they had seen. They told her that they had seen that
Joshua and Amy were both taking these things and they told her exactly
what they had witnessed during Joshua's phone call. They waited while
she had her paralegals prepare sworn statements for them both to sign
and she took two of the capsules to enter into evidence. She told them
to immediately go to the DEA liaison and turn the remainder of them over
to them. She told them that her second call after she got off of the
phone with the judge would be to that person so they would be expecting
them.
As they left the office Sam and Danny exchanged worried looks. Whatever
it was that Joshua and Amy were involved with it was much more serious
that a nutty religion and as they drove, both of them felt like an icy
hand was gripping their chests because somehow, someway. Jenny was
involved in this as well.
