Near the middle part of the 21st century, several cosmic events occurred
at the same time-a massive solar flare, an extra solar comet with a tail
of unknown radiation passed near earth, and an experimental power source
being developed in the pacific area went online. The results were
unexplainable-almost seven million people (out of a population of seven
billion) developed some sort of superhuman ability. Some of these were
physical, others mental, others could only be described as magical.
Some made physical changes of greater or lesser degree, most did not.
Power levels varied greatly also. With millions of so-called 'enhanced
humans' living on earth, obviously life became very different, both for
the recipients of the change and for those who were not.
Sixteen year old Melissa Donaldson was living a perfect life. She lived
in a medium sized town on the Jersey Shore, where she had access to the
beach and boardwalk every summer, and the body to make every male there
drool. She had long blonde hair (with a little help!), deep blue eyes,
classic Nordic features and as previously stated, a body to die for.
She was highly intelligent and athletic, and as a varsity cheerleader,
was dating a junior member of the football, basketball and baseball
teams. Her parents weren't rich, but comfortable middle class. In
short, Melissa was everybody's dream girl.
Her room was just perfect for a teenaged girl. It was painted a pale
blue, with posters of boy bands and such on the walls. Her furniture
(bed, dresser, stereo cabinet and vanity) were all a pristeen white.
Countless hours of practice had made her an expert with makeup, and she
never went out of the house without it. Her vanity had dozens of items
for her face, eyes, lips and nails, with several bottles of perfume
arrayed next to them, enough of everything for every occasion. Many of
her items weren't inexpensive drug store brands either-she shopped for
Clinique, Estee Lauder, Chanel and MAC as often as she could afford to.
She had asked for, and received for Christmas, a Coach purse. However,
even with her material and social advantages, she was considered to be
one of the nicest girls in her school. She had worked hard to make the
varsity squad as a sophomore, and was extremely proud of the white
jacket with the green dragon emblem that she constantly wore when the
weather permitted.
Her boyfriend, Tommy Loretto had dropped her off after both of their
practices had finished. She wasn't allowed to date on school nights, in
order to keep up her grades, but she had so many privileges that it
didn't really bother her. She had earned her parents trust and had no
wish to jeopardize it. So Tommy drive her to and from school, they'd
sit a little while, and then he'd kiss her and leave. That was her
normal life.
She went into her room (her home was a one story ranch with a basement)
changed out of her denim skirt and heels and into a pair of shorts and
sneakers. She went into her bathroom and creamed off most of her makeup
to let her skin breathe, and prepared to do her homework. That's when
it hit.
Like approximately seven million other people in the world, with no
discernable link between them, Melissa felt a sharp pain and fell
unconscious on her bed. While she was dead to the world, the
aforementioned forces did their work on her. Most people received some
sort of superhuman power, and underwent some sort of physical change.
The physical changes were usually immediately apparent, the powers
usually not so, and had to be experimented with to realize their full
potential. Melissa was no different.
When she woke up a little while later, she wondered what had happened,
and of course felt extremely strange. The latter she attributed to the
fainting spell she had experienced. However, she quickly noticed she
seemed to have grown, followed by a realization that her breasts were
gone, and upon examination, something else had appeared in a location
that it had no business being in. She was taller, broader, and her long
blonde hair was gone. In other words, Melissa Donaldson had somehow
been transformed into a male. Which she was NOT happy about. She also
felt uncomfortable in the too small clothing she was wearing, especially
the bra, and the panties that compressed her new equipment against her
body. She quickly stripped them off, and changed into a football jersey
and a pair of boxers that she often slept in. What she would do for
pants she didn't know, and one of her pull on skirts was definitely out.
She was pondering her plight when her mother, who was a teacher in one
of the town's two middle schools came home. Melissa took a deep breathe
and stepped into the hallway.
Her mother's reaction was exactly as expected. Seeing a male (who
wasn't even Tommy) sanding by her daughter's bedroom wearing underwear
and a jersey sent her through the roof. Melissa finally managed to calm
her down and have a serious talk about her plight. Fortunately, her
mother had heard on the car radio about the phenomenon, though it was
still unexplained and was being talked about non stop, and one student
in her school had even experienced a change, adding ten years in age and
turning green, with the ability to create invisible force fields around
himself or any other object. He had been taken to the hospital under
police guard, and a squad of military police from nearby Fort Dix had
been dispatched. Until the government knew what was happening, it was
taking no chances with national security. Anyone who experienced a
markedly different from the norm change was under detention 'for
observation'. A lot were missed, though.
While Melissa and her mom were talking, her dad came, as his shift had
ended. He was a cop in another town, and had also heard stories of
changes all over the world. He was just as surprised as his wife, but
eventually he also came to realize that he now had a son, instead of a
dsughter, at least for the present. As the event had just happened, no
one knew if the change was temporary, long term, or even permanent. Or
if there was anything current medicine or science could do to reverse
any of it. And what to do about the unknown number who had received
super human powers, and just how many of them might turn evil. These
questions, and many more remained to be answered.
But Melissa's immediate problem was clothing. She was actually now
taller and broader than her dad was, so even his things wouldn't fit.
His mother solved the problem, as mothers are wont to do. She left her
husband with their child and went off to Wal-Mart, only a few minutes
away, and purchased a few pairs of jeans and sneakers, plus briefs,
socks and t-shirts for him. Enough to get by on for a few days, anyway.
Getting used to a son would be interesting, especially since she loved
having a daughter and the two were very close, not usually arguing and
definitely not experiencing the usual pull away that mothers and
daughters often did. Melissa was also close to her dad, and the two had
a conversation while her mother was out buying her some male clothing.
Jerry Donaldson was interested in knowing if her? his? orientation had
changed along with her body. Or if it was still the same? In other
words, was Melissa-or whatever her new name would be-was still
interested in boys, or was she now attracted to girls? Melissa replied
that she didn't know-it was still too sudden. It was highly unlikely
she'd be dating any of the girls from her school, as she had spent WAY
too much time in the locker rooms with them, and of course had seen many
of them in the showers there and changing clothing in mall dressing
rooms and on sleepovers. And they'd remember, too. That would be
embarrassing for both of them. And if she was still into boys, well,
that would cause some problems of its own, though homosexuality had been
officially recognized and accepted for thirty five years or more. That
had been the time the Supreme Court had officially recognized same sex
marriage, though there were still some religious groups that refused to
accept it. But their numbers were dwindling, and at some point, would
probably die out. As they were srapping up the conversation, Melissa's
mother came home loaded down with Wal-mart bags.
Melissa thanked her mother for her help (she wondered what her new name
would be, as Melissa wasn't appropriate any more), took the bags and
disappeared down the hallway to her room to change. She had already
removed her makeup, bra and panties, and now she stripped out of the
boxers and jersey she had changed in to. She looked wistfully around
her room and intro her closet, where a number of cute dresses, skirts
and tops hung, regretting that she wasn't able to change into them. She
looked at her collection of cosmetics and jewelry on her vanity, and
actually began to cry, something she realized she wouldn't be able to do
any more-at least not in public. Melissa loved being a girl, she loved
looking and being feminine, and she was going to miss that part of her
life. She didn't even mind her monthly visitor, as it was a symbol of
her ability to give new life when the time came. She felt, as she
changed into her new masculine attire, that she was going to hate being
a man. Even if she got a power out of this, it wasn't worth it. She
took a deep sigh and began to get dressed.
Dressing in male clothing wasn't as difficult for her as a boy
attempting to dress for the first time as a girl would be. The briefs
she pulled up her legs went on the same as normal panties, and she
didn't have to worry about a bra. Jeans were jeans, and they went on
the same, though they were looser tham what she was used to, though the
zipper was on the wrong side. The Giants t-shirt she pulled on went on
the same as any pullover top she owned, and there were no buttons to
confuse her. Socks were socks, and so were sneakers. No purse, makeup,
perfume (though she now owned a spray bottle of Paco Rabanne cologne for
men), nail polish or jewelry such as earrings. Melissa hated every
minute of it. She wondered if she could eventually come out as
transgender, though with her new build, she'd never be able to pass, and
at her age, she had theoretically been exposed to several years of male
hormones. While some transwomen with her body type managed to pull
transition off anyway, she didn't think she'd be able to do that. She
figured she'd eventually live her life as a male crossdresser, at least
in private. She didn't know much about the crossdressing world, but she
did have a computer, and the internet had information about just about
everything. But first she had to get through the rest of high school,
and she would seriously miss her green and white cheer uniform while she
did that.
She exited her room for the first time dressed as a male, and walked
into the dining room where her parents waited at the table, prepared to
have a serious talk about planning her immediate future. It was quickly
agreed that Melissa was a totally inappropriate name for their teenager
just now. She could resume her old life if and when the change
reversed, but for now, she needed a boys name. after the family tested
various choices, it was decided that Malcolm was an obvious choice. It
was close to her female name, so it would still identify her (him?) and
began with almost the same sound so that when introducing himself, if he
slipped up, he could correct the pronounciation immediately. So the
former Melissa became Malcolm James Donaldson, high school sophomore.
They made plans based on what the government decided to acquire new
identification, and decided that a complete schedule change was in order
at the local high school. While he may know some of his new classmates,
sitting in a class where he had been a hot cheerleader was a
complication he didn't need. The question of sports came up, as with
his highly athletic body, joining one or cause a few problems. But
scholarship and even collee admission applications required some extra-
curricular activities. Cheerleader in school and ballet lessons earlier
wouldn't quite cut it. And Mal's plans to go part time to voc school
for cosmetology next year obviously weren't going to work any more
either. So his schedule of Geometry, English 2, Biology I, Spanish 2,
Phys Ed 2, Lunch, Algebra 2 (two math courses) and World History 2 would
remain. Phys Ed was now co-ed so there was no problem there. So the
next morning when Mr. Sonaldason went to work, Mrs. Donaldson took a
personal day and escorted her minor son to the Board of Education
building, to see what arrangements would have to be made for him. After
that would come the legal stuff, such as applying for a new birth
certificate. They all felt that the sooner everything was completed,
the better and smoother the adjustments would be, for everyone.
The people at the board office were actually quite accommodating. The
news of all the changes had been broadcast non stop since it had
occurred, and they were expecting a few of their students would be
affected. Since they already had a birth certificate on file, a name
change, given the circumstances was simplicity itself. A phone call to
the building principal filled him in of the schedule change and the
former cheerleader's new status, and everything was arranged. Mal was
told that when his new birth certificate came in, they would need a
copy. The district IT person changed all of Melissa's records to
Malcomb's in a matter of minutes. Changing things at the county
courthouse records office went almost as smoothly, as they were also
aware of the changes that had occurred. Evidently, orders from the
chief county judge had been passed along, and everyone was being as
cooperative as possible. At least Malcomb wasn't ten feet tall with
purple skin and four arms (as one unfortunate changee was!), he appeared
to be a normal teenaged male, and as of yet didn't even exhibit any
extra ordinary powers. Everyone breathed a little easier on hearing
that. Now however she was nervous. Or he was, whatever. The next day
he would start school.
Jeans were allowed by the school dress code, but not t-shirts. Either
button shirts or golf shirts were required. So he dressed in the same
jeans and sneakers as yesterday, plus a green golf shirt. He mistakenly
picked up a tube of lipstick before remembering his new situation and
growled at himself, while wistfully wishing 'she' could still wear it.
She had picked up MAC Ruby Woo, a deep red, and one of her favorites.
He was going to have to pack all his feminine stuff away, hoping against
hope that the change would reverse itself. Someday. As she packed it
away, she had another strange experience.
Most changees had been lucky enough to receive at least one 'super
power'. Mal hadn't discovered if he had one yet, but his vision faded,
and another scene came into view. It was him, in school, talking with
several other students, both boys and girls. Two of the girls were
friends from cheerleading, the others were from the Junior Varsity
football team (they were only sophomores, most of the Varsity was
juniors or seniors). He figured it was just a daydream, put it out of
his mind, and thought no more about it. Until he got to school. While
standing in the cafeteria waiting area, the exact five students, dressed
exactly as he had seen them, came up to him and stood in the exact same
places. It appeared he had a minor degree of precognition, which would
come in handy in his life, no matter what he did with it. At least his
friends understood, and provisionally accepted that he was still the
same old Melissa, just in a male body. Obviously the girls wouldn't be
inviting him to any sleepovers or mall makeover parties, and so far, the
guys weren't quite ready to discuss the attributes of the various girls
in their school with him. He thanked his lucky stars for that, it would
have been quite embarrassing. Plus he had a VERY good idea of what all
the girls on the cheer squad, and a lot of others in the sophomore class
looked like naked. He wasn't about to share that with his new male
buddies, it would seem like betraying his old friendships, even if they
couldn't be close friends any more. And he certainly wasn't going to
try to sleep with any of his old BFFs, that would have just been creepy.
But at least everyone didn't hate him.
So time passed at the same slow rate that it does in every high school
in the United States. Mal kept his grades up, explained about the
change when he had to, stayed by himself, as he wasn't sure who he was
attacted to yet. In the spring, he decided to go out for the track
team, running the 1K and 2K events. As a sophomore, he wasn't expected
to do very well, though he did, and his times steadily decreased. He
decided to do cross country and winter track also in his last two years,
in order to build his qualifications. He packed away all of his female
clothing, cosmetics and jewelry, still hoping he could someday wear them
again- in public, as a girl. He did attend both the junior and senior
proms, with a female date, though they went mostly as friends. After
sixteen years of being a girl, he still didn't have any romantic
feelings for them. Or boys either. His limited precognition, after
testing, turned out to be limited to six hours in the future, at best.
He used this power to get rich-he would buy lottery tickets (after he
turned eighteen} two hours before the drawing, careful not to pick the
giant jackpot numbers, as that would draw attention. He won several
second and third prizes, scattering his purchases among several
convenience stores, which is how he supported himself. Sports betting
online added to his nest egg also. While Mal was still overall a nice
person, his use of his power to enrich himself could be considered
cheating, though he had been careful to never let anyone know he had the
power. He reasoned that at least he wasn't breaking into jewelry stores
or killing people like that girl a few hundred miles away. And he
didn't have the powers that the hero girl who was the first girl's
nemesis did. He had to do what he could.
After high school came college. While had had his precognition powers,
since he was still underage, he couldn't use them to buy winning lottery
tickets just yet. What he could do was get a degree and mark time until
he could begin to make a killing. Since they lived on the New Jersey
shore, he was within driving distance of several very good colleges and
universities, in addition to the county community college, which had a
satellite campus of a major university right there. As his parents
weren't rich (a cop and a teacher!) he decided to start with the
community college both for the lower tuition and the fact that he could
continue to live at home, at least for his first two years. He would
turn twenty years old at the end of his Associates degree program, and
could begin to make some money gambling, which had been his plan for
several years. While there, he discovered that the hormones coursing
through his new male body had given him an attraction to females, and as
he was an extremely handsome well built young man, had no trouble in
finding dates, and even on occasion, sleeping with the young ladies in
question. By a strange coincidence, a young lady he had fallen hard for
was also a changee, who fortunately hadn't experienced any adverse
physical changes, but had received a minor power herself. She had the
power to turn herself invisible for up to an hour at a time, again, not
enough to become a major super heroine, but enough that she could either
use it to enrich herself, or to go to work for a government agency as a
spy of some sort. Lyla Norag (her name) turned out to be more
principled then Mal was, and as she had been evaluated by the
government, had chosen to join them as an agent for the CIA after she
had received her BS in Engineering. She took her last two years of
college at the main state university, approximately two hours from their
home county up Route 18, and made high enough marks, combined with her
abilities, to be recruited. While the government did have a group of
super powered changees already in their employ to assist them in
apprehending super powered changee criminals, she wasn't used in that
capacity. She was used to keep tabs on foreign agents in eastern
Europe, since her ancestry was Ukrainian and she spoke, read and wrote
Russian and Ukrainian fluently. Since Mal wasn't exactly performing
criminal acts, she never had to interact with him professionally, though
she, and her employers did try to recruit him also, as his powers could
also be extremely useful. Mal, however, even though he was adapting to
his male body, still hated it, even though he was able to perform all of
the expected male roles. He still wished he was Melissa, cute ex-
cheerleader and makeup expert. He considered going to cosmetology
school anyway, but he learned that he wasn't gay, and virtually every
male cosmetician most definitely was. With his build and looks, he
would have been constantly fending off advances from some of those
others (it was a small community, that of male cosmetics artists) and he
really wasn't into that. Besides, there really wasn't any way to become
rich working at a cosmetics counter or even owning a store in one of the
big chains, and he had the power, so he might as well use it. Besides,
working around all the products he used to employ so expertly might be
too tempting, or it might put him into a regretful depression. So
Malcolm passed. But since he decided to attend the same university as
Lyla for his last two years, majoring in Etatistics to give himself a
cover, he was learning to enjoy himself as much as possible. He and Lyla
spent a lot of time together, much of it in bed, though they both
regretted that their differing career goals wouldn't allow them to stay
together for life.
They both graduated, and Lyla went off to Langley, Virginia for her
training. Even with her abilities, she needed to know what she was
doing in the field, so she learned surveillance techniques, hand to hand
combat, weapons, and knowledge of lockpicking and explosives. When she
was finished, she was assigned to the US embassy in Kiev as a technology
attache, which everyone and his brother knew was shorthand for spy. She
did manage to complete several assignments before being rotated out to
Moscow, where she actually managed to sit in on a meeting between the
Minister of War and the Chief Marshal of the Russian Military. She
learned a lot about several movements planned for the short term future
and managed to send the information back to Langley. She made quite a
name for herself in US Intelligence circles.
Mal, however did follow the different path he had decided for himself.
After he turned twenty one, he began frequenting casinos and buying
lottery tickets. He never made an exorbitant amount at the tables, as
that would have caused him to be suspected, ejected and banned. A few
hundred a night, at different casinos was enough to keep him satisfied
until the time for his big score rolled around. When the lottery in his
home state reached 600+ million dollars, he bought the winning ticket.
He looked ahead and saw that there was only one winner, him. He chose
to take it in a lump sum, which after taxes worked out to over three
hundred million dollars, leaving him more than set for life. While he
was now part of the one percent so often talked about, he still wasn't
sure the price he had to pay for his power was worth it. As the old
song went, 'He enjoyed being a girl.'
