So every guy inevitably has this fantasy, whether they admit it to
themselves or not. Being able to walk into the girl's locker room
without consequence and see women in their element. Let met say that
it's perhaps a fine fantasy, but when given the opportunity? You can't
really help but feel like a creep.
It was bad enough trying to navigate seeing - and touching - my own body,
but the last thing I wanted to see were the bodies of people I knew,
particularly when they wouldn't have shown themselves to the "real" me.
I probably looked strange to anyone who might have noticed me shuffle
into the locker room with my eyes downcast, hoping to amble my way to a
locker without seeing anything.
I suppose the one plus of being the new girl to the varsity team was that
the existing pecking order meant that no one paid me any mind. I assumed
Ally would have been friends with at least some of them while they were
all in JV together, but I can see how a year off the team might create a
gulf between people. One girl, Jaina, did sit by me and started making
small talk - I didn't know her from my "real" life, but I gathered from
context that she was a transfer student so it'd make sense for her to be
friendly with me. I tried my best to remember "EYES UP HERE" and to
never let my gaze wander whenever I turned to face her to speak to her,
but otherwise I was more than happy to not take a pretend I couldn't see
anything.
I didn't even want to think what showering after practice would be like.
God I hope I can figure this out sooner rather than later.
Fumbling around while trying to change with my eyes practically closed,
it did give me time to try to reach into Ally's memories and to draw out
some of what I needed to be able to actually perform and not make this a
complete disaster. I can't quite describe the feeling of being able to
recall knowledge that you shouldn't have access to. If mind reading was
real, it'd probably be like that, where I could access Ally's more
ingrained memories like I was peering into someone else's brain. The
cheerleading knowledge I had access to was both foreign and familiar at
the same time, much like some of the habitual and instinctual knowledge I
had access to without thinking about it, like when I put on my make up in
the morning.
Ally... I... we had years of cheerleading experience and I could remember
all the training, the choreography, the muscles I needed to use to be
able to tumble and push someone up into the air. Yet despite how
familiar this all seemed to me, I would be lying if I didn't also admit
that I was scared shitless at having to put this in action. I have to
hope Ally is as good as I think she is and made varsity of her own
volition, because otherwise it'll be very short practice.
By the time I was finally changed, the locker room was empty and I was
left alone to survey the situation. I went to the bathrooms to take a
look at myself in the mirror and was almost beside myself at how I looked
in the cute cheerleading uniform. Sexy! Not cute, sexy!
I'm really not trying to be a narcissist, because while I thought I
looked fine before, something about the way Ally carried herself made her
seem beautiful. However Mom and Dad's genes came together to create the
"girl version" of myself, biology really did a splendid job as I could
see hints of my Mom's gentle features in my face and her silhouette in my
body while I had my Dad's height and build. Well to the extent that this
lean body had muscle anyway.
"McCarthy! MOVE IT!" I heard a voice bellow into the locker room. I
probably could have spent all day looking at myself, much like the myth
itself, so I was actually glad for the angry voice to break the little
spell I was under.
"Sorry coach!" I yell in response as I turn away from my reflection and
run out to join the rest of the team.
My heart sank a little as I saw everyone headed out to the field to
practice, but given that this was football season, I shouldn't be
surprised the team would want to work on their game day routines. It was
a strange sensation walking out onto the track, seeing the guys already
in the midst of practicing without me, running drills that that been
engrained into me for so long. I turned my gaze to cheer team, watching
as they were warming up on a part of the field closest to the bleachers.
As I jogged to join them, I could hear a group of girls shout, "GO ALLY!"
as I approached and smiled when I saw Britney and some of the other
members of the JV team sitting in the bleachers waving at me.
I waved back at them, only to be greeted by Violet's angry stare when I
turned back to face the team. Fine, it's game face time. I gritted my
teeth and quickly began to warm up myself. As I stretched, I could feel
my body extend farther than I could have ever imagined and my legs in
particular could practically reach positions that would have been very...
painful for me to reach in my own body. It was fun to see what my limits
were, pushing it a tiny bit further with each stretch to see how far I
could go. I'm not sure if this would make up for not being able to bench
more than a hundred pounds, but if I was going to "make lemonade" of the
situation I might as well enjoy this sensation while I can.
Much to my relief, when the coach had us line up and practice one of the
easier starter routines, I was able to draw out Ally's experiences and
perform the simple choreography. I'm sure it was still sloppy, but I
didn't fall on my ass or step into someone else and cause a pile up, so
I'd chalk that up as a success. In fact, I was so distracted I didn't
even think about the words I was chanting until after the fact.
"GIVE ME AN E! GIVE ME AN A! GIVE ME A G-L-E-S! EAGLES ARE GONNA,
EAGLES ARE GONNA, EAGLES ARE GONNA SOAR!"
I'm sure I must have had that constantly while I was on the field, but it
sounded so cheesy now that I didn't know that I had a bit of a shit-
eating grin while chanting it because I thought it felt so silly. You're
probably not reciting award-winning poetry to a crowd to get them pumped
up though.
Coach Marciano turned to face me as our routine continued and shouted,
"Ally, tighten it up!"
"Yes ma'am!" I shouted in between chants. I imagine this has got to be
like football, or anything really, where you get to the point where
you're so practiced that you don't think about what you're doing. Rather
than look at my feet or in front of me at some other cheerleaders, I cast
my gaze far wider, focusing on a point past the bleachers and into the
parking lot and just let go, giving full control to the instincts I knew
lay deep within my, or Ally's, subconscious. I could feel my body strut
in sync with the others, delivering high kicks and pumping my arms in
directions that made no sense in isolation, but when performed with the
other girls provided quite a show. The routine ended with me rotating to
the front with a few other girls, before we jumped up in the air in sync
and landed in splits.
I had a big smile on my face which was expected of me of course, but It
was smiling because my theory seemed to have played out exactly how I
thought it would. As I slowly pushed myself off the ground, it was
strange feeling my body being bent into a position that I knew should
have been painful - or would have been in my own body. I didn't want to
imagine myself in this situation for anything longer than a few days, but
If I was going to be stuck here for a while, I should probably figure out
the limits of this body and to remember not to try to do things that I
had previously taken for granted.
I gave a few high-fives with the girls who jumped into the splits with
me, celebrating how well we did, before Coach brought us back together to
focus on her. "Enough patting yourselves on your back for a warm up
routine. Ally, get up here!"
I wasn't sure if I did something wrong, but I didn't like being singled
out... As much as I was beginning to enjoy exploring the capabilities of
this new body, I was hoping to through the rest of the day under the
radar. When I reached her, she grabbed me by my shoulder and turned me
around to face the other girls and started her spiel, "Listen, I've heard
some grumbling about Ally and let me make myself clear." I turned my
head away to avoid the some of the stares I was getting, only to catch
Britney waving at me. I couldn't be sure, but she might have decided to
take matters into her own hands and told the coach about some of the
rumoured tension that she had heard about.
I don't know if she made things worse, because I assumed girls hated a
rat as much as guys did. But I suppose I had to appreciate her kindness.
Coach M. continued, "Let me get one thing straight here. Ally is one of
the best tumblers and fliers at this school - we all saw what the Junior
team did at State last year. But maybe she can give you a quick
reminder." She then backed away from me and gestured at the path in
front of me, inviting me to show her what I could do.
Geez, no pressure. I could feel a lump in my throat and my body starting
to tingle as the nerves began to work through my body. I looked dead
ahead and blocked out the world, trying to go back into the zone that I
was in earlier. If Ally is as good as everyone seems to think she is,
then I just need to get the ball rolling and my body will execute. I
took a deep breath and nodded to myself. Like that old guy says in that
movie my Dad loves, I eat pressure for breakfast.
I took a few steps back to give myself some room for a running start and
began to release all the tension in my body. Not to objectify a woman's
body, or the current one I was inhabiting, but it felt like getting
behind the wheel of a new car and feeling the urge to floor it to see
what she could do.
Here goes nothing!
I started my run, accelerating as fast as I could before pointing my arms
up in the air and then leapt into the fall. The next few seconds were a
complete blur, but by the time I time I was stopped and back on my feet
again, I was dozens of yards away from everyone.
There was a short pause as everyone absorbed what had happened, but my
brain caught up with my body and I realized how many tumbles and flips I
had done. This body was like a god damn sports car.
I could hear Britney and the juniors cheering loudly, clearly pleased
with my performance, which only caused some more consternation with
Violet and some of the other girls. I really hoped this wouldn't turn
into Mean Girls, because the last thing that Ally and I needed was more
drama as I tried to figure my way out of this mess.
As I slowly jogged back into formation, Coach started talking about me to
the team again, "There's no room for ego on our team if we want to make
nationals this year. Now get ready for the next set!"
I stopped as I got near Violet, while the other girls were finding their
starting marks, and told her with as much sincerity that I could muster,
"Listen, I'm just here to help the team. Tell me what to do and I'll do
it." She just turned away from me and ignored me, leaving me momentarily
shunned before I moved back to my spot. Jaina and a couple of other the
girls not in the Gaggle complimented me on the short showcase I gave
them, which admittedly made me feel happy. I was good at football, and I
knew it, so it was nice to know that I could the still experiencing the
feeling of being good at something while I was here.
The rest of our practice was pretty workmanlike - it was surprising
because Coach M. is a lot like Coach Sanders in that regard. Very
structured, making sure we repeated our motions over and over again until
she felt we nailed it, only to repeat it one more time. Thankfully the
flying stunts weren't as dramatic, if only for our own safety, although I
was still a bit freaked out at the thought of being pushed up into the
air the first time around. I'm not even going to think of the most
advanced flying stunts because I didn't plan to be here when the cheer
competition season started.
By the time we were done, the juniors came out to greet us and to give us
some water and towels as we cooled off, with Britney cheerily doing her
part and congratulating me on a practice well done.
It was then that I noticed Jen lurking on the bleachers, trying to hide
her gawking by buying her head in a book from time to time. I know she
would occasionally watch some of my football practices, almost out of
courtesy and because I was often her ride, so I chalked it up to similar
behaviour. Maybe she didn't want to draw the attention of the other
cheerleaders, although I'm not sure why she'd feel the need to hide from
them.
As the girls started making small talk and made plans for the next day, I
looked down field and saw Mike running some scrambling drills. He was
always a better scrambler than me, almost as slippery as a piece of
melting ice, but I noticed a mistake I had helped him correct last year -
he would always rush his throws and launch the ball without planting his
foot. The lack of control definitely made the ball unpredictable, but it
also led quite a few incomplete passes.
I could hear Coach Sanders yell, "CONTROL YOUR THROW!" but if this Mike
was like the one I knew, he needed a lot more than yelling to figure out
his problem.
At that moment, I didn't really think of what I was doing or how it would
look to the others - I simply saw a problem that I wanted to fix. But
from the cheerleader's point of view, they saw me get up and nonchalantly
jog up the field to speak to the "dreamy" quarterback. If I was paying
attention, I probably could have heard some of the nasty words the Gaggle
were throwing around as they tried to bring me down to Violet, and even
Britney was at a loss for words.
But that didn't matter to me. Football season was about to start, and if
we didn't get this problem solved then I knew we'd be cheering a losing
team again this year. "Mike!" I called out as I approached him.
He turned his head and took off his helmet, messing a bit with his hair.
Oh great. He thinks I'm here to flirt. Thankfully Coach Sanders was
paying attention to the Defence at the moment or he'd probably chew both
our heads off. He smiled at me, "Ally, it's great to see you out here."
I felt my heart flutter as a stray thought crashed through my brain. OMG
he knows who I am and is happy to see me! I stopped in my tracks as the
thought ambushed me. That was clearly not me... but does that mean Ally
is still... here? I could feel my heart beat faster as he got closer,
standing right in front of me. His sweat dripping off his gorgeous face
and down onto his well-built body, his manly scent wafting through the
air as my imagination began to think about all the things that I could do
to him... or that he could to do me...
NOPE-NOPE-NOPE! N-O-P-E!
Football god damnit, this is about football! I didn't want to think
about the desires that were bubbling up in my body. A body that had
served me so up to a few minutes ago that was about to betray me. I did
what I would have done in my old body, but reversed the genders, and gave
myself the equivalent of a cold shower by picturing my Dad naked. Of
course, it wasn't that hard because we'd occasionally hit the gym
together and, well, my Dad was not really one to care about impropriety
in that regard and definitely liked to let it all hang as it were. It
certainly worked as I felt a cold shiver run down my spine and my mind
dropped those bad thoughts as quickly as they had appeared.
I cleared my throat to recompose myself and began to coach him as best I
could, "Listen, you're doing great on the scramble but your throws are
still wonky."
I think I could see a look of disappointment on his face, whether it's
because he thought he'd get to flirt with a cheerleader, or because
someone was critiquing his playing I'm not sure. But he nodded quietly
before admitting he had a control problem, "Yeah, I know. Coach has been
on my ass all summer to try to figure it out. I haven't been able to get
it right."
I smiled sympathetically at him and blurted out without thinking, "You're
scared of getting sacked." Shit. That was something Mike had told me
when we had tried to figure out his problem last year.
He didn't notice that I knew something that I shouldn't know and laughed,
"Yeah, well, when you get sacked like 5 or 6 times in your big
championship game it's hard not to be scared."
I grimaced. Well, at least I didn't weird him out. But I really need to
know what happened at that game last year, considering it was such a
disaster. Or wait... why do I care about ANY of this? As bad as I felt
for Mike at this moment, I had to remind myself that this was not my life
and this was not "my" Mike. And yet seeing the sadness and fear in his
eyes, I just couldn't help myself. I reached out and grabbed his arm,
"You have to trust the line will hold and protect the pocket. Give
yourself the extra second to plant yourself and find your grip on the
ball before you throw it."
I instinctively I grabbed the ball from him and call out to one of the
receivers, "JAKE! Slant 60 zig left!" He turned my way to see who had
made the call, and I'm sure he would have dismissed me out of hand if I
wasn't already backing up to get into a throwing position. I called a
short play because I had no idea what this body could do - Ally was
clearly strong and could jump probably higher than a lot of guys I knew,
but I assumed she couldn't throw the long bomb.
I had to trust that he was running his route as my quarterbacking
instincts kicked in. If cheerleading is second nature of Ally, then
football was second nature to me. I could feel my body protesting as I
was using muscles in ways that it was never trained to do, but as I
twisted into the scramble I could feel myself feeling comfortable...
feeling like I was me again. Even in this uniform, even without cleats,
I could feel myself moving as if I belonged in this spot. After three
seconds, I twisted one final time and turned to face where I knew Jake
would be. Planting the heel of my back foot, I adjusted the grip on the
ball and inhaled deeply while drawing my arm back for the throw.
Time slowed to a crawl as I drew my arm back and I could see Jake enter
my field of vision from the corner of my right eye. I let out a grunt as
I exhaled and launched the ball like a bullet. When the ball left my
hand and started arcing through the air, I could tell it was much slower
than the throw I would have made yesterday. Under normal circumstances,
the ball would have intercepted Jake the moment he hit his mark while
here, he had time to stop and prepare to receive it.
I guess I did throw like a girl after all. But that didn't matter,
because the ball was straight and clean and landed right at Jake's chest
as he caught it in his hands and cradled it against himself to stabilize
the catch. Jake looked back up at me, surprised at what had just
happened.
"Wow, nice throw!" I heard Mike exclaim from behind me. I wasn't sure if
he was being genuine or patronizing, but he stepped to my side and
confirmed that he was impressed with my throw by rhetorically asking me
for advice, "I just can't get out of my own head."
Try being a girl for a day, I wanted to retort. But I comforted him as
best as I could, "We need to readjust the line to give you the time you
need. And if you get hit, hey... remember, chicks dig scars." I caught
myself and winced after the words came out of my mouth, realizing that I
was making yet another reference that "my" Mike would know from all the
times we watched that funny football movie together when we were younger.
His face lit up as he recognized the reference and laughed, before
replying with, "And glory lasts forever!"
I turned to face him and without thinking dropped another reference as we
started to egg each other on, "Clear eyes, full hearts..."
He leant down to meet my face with a big grin. "Can't lose!"
I couldn't help but laugh at that point, as a carefree expression of joy
come out of my mouth for the first time today. I stopped suddenly as I
realized what was happening and immediately felt embarrassed, bringing my
head to my side as I turned away from him. I could feel the lovey-dovey
feeling boiling up inside me again, although now it was because we were
bonding over football and that TV show. It was almost like I was with
"my" Mike.
That familiar happy feeling of being with my best friend changed into
something much different when I felt him grip my shoulders to draw my
attention back to him as he stared intently at me. Did he always have
those wonderfully piercing deep blue eyes? We stared deeply into each
other's eyes in silence for what seemed like an eternity until a loud
angry voice broke our joint reverie, "HEY TAYLOR, STOP PLAYING HOUSE AND
GET BACK TO WORK!"
God damnit Coach.
An involuntary pang of disappointment washed over me as our moment was
interrupted. I could feel him reluctantly let me go, giving me that
wonderful smile that I was always a little jealous of because I knew it
would destroy the hearts of any girl he smiled at, before taking one of
my hands into his. He was about to say something, but Coach's incoherent
yelling stopped him and he let my hand go. As he put on his helmet, he
did manage to say with an air confidence, "I'll DM you." This wasn't a
request, or a question. It an affirmation, a declaration, something that
I knew he would do. "And I promise I'll work on my footing," he added a
bit jokingly as he snapped the helmet's chin strap in place.
I just gave him a dumbfounded nod as I was trying to process the emotions
I was experiencing. My heart swooned as he gave me one more smile before
turning his back to me and running back into the field to meet Coach
Sanders. When he reached the others, I saw Jake give him a playful punch
in the arm as they were undoubtedly talking about me, perhaps as Mike's
latest conquest.
Before I could really take in what had just happened, I heard several of
the girls behind me scream in excitement at what they had just witnessed.
Oh fuck fuck fuck. What did I just do?
I clutched my chest with my hands as I felt my heart practically ready to
thump out of my body. Despite my protestations, did I accidentally give
Ally want she wanted all along? Or maybe her instincts had taken over
again and her body was running on autopilot and made me say those
things...
As I turned away from Mike and the football players in a state of shock,
I could see Britney run up to me and practically jump onto me as she
started squealing, "ALLY WOW!!!! I didn't know you liked Mike!"
I still couldn't find the words to articulate what just happened. That
was just football. Right? I just wanted to help Mike with his throwing.
Right? Right?! That's all!
That's what I kept trying to tell myself as some of the other girls
excitedly ran over and started asking me questions like "how long did I
like Mike?" and "did you practice football just to impress him?". I
almost felt nauseous as the reality of what happened finally hit me.
Behind the girls that surrounded me, I saw Violet leaving in a huff with
the Gaggle right behind her, undoubtedly talking her up as she stormed
away from the almost unbelievable scene that had played out in front of
her. I felt bad both as myself because of my infatuation with her as the
girl I wished I had the courage to ask out, and as Ally because of her
almost obsessive adoration of her as the most popular girl in school.
I could see Jen in the distance, head still buried deep in her book as
she tried to make it clear that she wasn't paying attention to whatever
was happening on the field and doing quite a bad job of it. Well, that's
going to make for an awkward ride home to say the least.
I remained as silent as I started walking back to the locker room with my
own group of girls in tow telling me how awesome I was and asking me to
help them with the guys that they liked.
But I had to remind myself of the absolute truth of my situation. This
would ALL be great if I actually WAS Ally. But I'm not! I do NOT find
my best friend dreamy or attractive. I do NOT swoon over him simply
because he smiles at me. And I'm certainly not excited because he told
me he'd message me! We text all the time!!! As the thoughts roiled
around in my head, I wasn't sure who I was trying to convince at the
moment.
God... I need this day to be over. Maybe everything will go back to
normal after I crawl into bed and fall asleep to find myself back in the
life I always knew. All I could do was hope as I tried to deal with the
almost incomprehensible hum of voices that continued to bombard me as we
entered the locker room.
