A New Career Track By Ran Dandel ©Ran Dandel, 1998 The early Spring sun rose over a grassy paddock, sparkling with a coat of morning dew. Scattered throughout the paddock were large oak and maple trees, remnants of the original hardwood forest of a hundred years ago. Patches of purple and white clover blossoms added color to the paddock's green expanse. In the barns, Ollie Tremayne was starting his daily routine. With a wheelbarrow full of a special feed mixture, he was filling the feed troughs of the horses in the barn. The feed mixture was a specially-prepared mix of various plant products supplemented with a variety of vitamins. After he'd given each horse its portion, he returned the wheelbarrow to storage and loaded a cart with several bales of hay. The hay was put into the manger of each stall so that the horses could have something to nibble on throughout the day. A cleaning and refilling of the water basins, and he was through with the feeding ritual. A while later, the training jockeys came out of their barracks and led the horses out into the stableyard. They went through the ritual of putting on bridles, cinching saddles, and generally preparing each horse for its morning exercise run. Ollie now had the 'fun' part of the day. While the jockeys were out with the horses, Ollie's and the other grooms' job was to clean out the stalls. They'd each take a rake and pitchfork, and move all of the urine and manure-coated straw from the stalls, cart it to the manure pile behind the barn, and then hose out the stalls. Ollie then hosed off the center walkway between the stalls, while chasing the soiled water into the drains. When he was done, all that was left was a clean, wet concrete floor. While the floor was drying, he took a hay cart over to the storage barn and loaded it with straw. While it wasn't especially good for feed, it made excellent bedding, and helped absorb the horses' wastes. When the floor was dry, he applied a liberal coating of straw on the floor of each stall he'd cleaned. The other grooms did the same to theirs. When the jockeys returned, the grooms would wash each horse and brush them down. This took up almost all of the rest of the day. As each horse was finished, it was released into its own fenced section of the paddock. This helped keep the horses from challenging each other for dominance, and also kept the fillies separated from the colts. At the end of the day, each horse was returned to its stall and given another batch of the special feed. The daily routine never varied, except during racing season, when one or another of the horses were taken away to the track. The workload was reduced by a few horses, but there were always several still in training or resting between races to keep him busy. Ollie reflected that this was one hell of a way to end an illustrious racing career. Ollie had once been one of the most celebrated jockeys on the circuit. He'd ridden four Derby winners, several Stakes Champions, and even one Triple Crown winner. He'd rarely finished out of the first four, and usually Show or better. There were few times he'd been an "also-ran", but those were usually first races for the horse, and the owner wanted his expertise in the saddle. Unfortunately, all good things come to an end. With increasing age, a few bad spills with their accompanying broken bones, he'd finally been forced to retire from the saddle. Having spent his money as fast as he made it, he didn't have anything to live on after he left riding. He tried to turn his experience with horses into training, but soon found that while he knew very well how to ride, he just couldn't translate it into training horses. He also couldn't teach riding. Because he loved horses and racing, he took the only job available. He was one of the finest stablehands Clover Honey Farms ever had. His days off were spent watching other farms' horses train at the local track. Sometimes he'd be able to get to the races. There, he'd wangle a pass to let him into the stables so that he could talk to some of his old racing buddies. A few of them had become successful after retiring from the saddle, but most wound up like him...racing bums barely able to make ends meet. That's where he finally ran into one of his oldest friends, Jackie Martin. While an able jockey, Jackie was also a conniver. He was always trying to get an angle on things so that he could get ahead. He'd talked Ollie into some of them. Unfortunately for both of them, the schemes worked about as well for them as schemes worked for Ralph Kramden, only Ralph and Norton had less money to start out with. Ollie ran into Jackie one morning before the Derby at the Downs. While he would not be able to be there for the race, Ollie loved watching some of the contenders perform their early-morning workouts. He just couldn't get over watching a well-bred Thoroughbred's grace and perfection of form when running at a full gallop. He was watching one of the newest sensations when he felt someone nudging his elbow. "Ollie, I see you just can't stay away from the track. I'd bet you'd give anything to be back up on one like that." It was Jackie Martin. "Jackie! I haven't seen you in years!" exclaimed a surprised Ollie. "What brings you to the Downs this early in the week?" "Oh...this and that," answered Jackie. "...and I think I've found a way to finally make a mark in the world. I need your help." "My help? What makes you so sure I'd be the one to help you out with one of your schemes? The last one broke us both. I retired from racing and high living to shoveling manure to keep food on the table. I don't think I want any part of what you have to offer, especially based on the past," said Ollie. Jackie replied, "Ollie, I know we've had bad luck with my ideas in the past, but if you'll just hear me out, and spend a day with me, I think I'll change your mind. Look, if you don't like what I have to tell you, you can turn me down. I won't be upset, and it won't hurt our friendship. What do you say?" "Well, with an offer like that, how can I miss? If I don't like it, no deal, huh?" "No deal, that's right." "All right, what do we do?" asked Ollie. "Meet me at Barrington's Diner next Wednesday morning for breakfast, and I'll tell you all about it. I'll show you what I mean, and you can decide," instructed Jackie. After a bit more discussion, Ollie agreed. He'd have to get the day off, but that would be no problem, since he had some time off coming to him anyway. For personal business, there were few obstacles to an occasional day off. The next Wednesday, Ollie met Jackie at Barrington's Diner. It was barely dawn, but the diner was open, and they sat down to a hearty breakfast. Barrington's was known for their absolutely wonderful Denver Omelets, and Ollie just loved them. As they were eating, Jackie started to discuss his proposition, "Ollie, the reason I asked you and not somebody else is that you are just about the best person when it comes to knowing how to race. You know how to position yourself out of the gate, how to pace a horse around the first turn and down the backstretch, and how to give a horse the desire to go all out coming home. I need you for that knowledge." "If you could get near a track on race day, you mean. I read all about that scandal last year, and that you're barred from racing for life. I even heard that no bookie will even take one of your bets, because of that." Ollie replied. He continued, "Jackie, you know that while I may be able to use my knowledge, I found out the hard way that I just can't teach it. I can't tell a young jockey how to know when the horse is ready to let go, or when it needs to be reined in a bit. That takes a certain feel. How can I help you with that?" "That's the beauty of it all. How would you like to actually BE the horse?" "Well, since that's fairy tale stuff, I know that if I was a proper racehorse, I'd not need a jockey...well, not one who needs to know anything more than how to stay in the saddle," said Ollie, humoring Jackie. "Yep, that's what I knew you would say," replied Jackie. After they finished, Jackie looked at his watch and motioned to Ollie to get into his car. While they were driving, Ollie asked Jackie where they were going. "We're just going to a little farm I know about. I want to show you something. After you see what I have to show you, I'll tell you my idea." After an hour's drive, they pulled off a country road onto the shoulder. They were in a small wood, and could see some paddocks through the trees. They got out of the car, and Jackie led off through the trees. "Come here, Ollie, I want you to see this..." Ollie followed Jackie's voice, and soon emerged from the wood into a bright meadow. Jackie was standing in the grass holding a leather object in his hands. "Do you know what this is, Ollie? It's the bridle that was worn by the original Southern Dancer when she won the Deep South Claims. It's our path to riches." "Jackie, how can an old bridle be our path to riches? Who would want to pay for such a thing? It looks half rotted!" exclaimed Ollie. "You're right, but it's our chance. Watch this!" Jackie put down the bridle and took something out of his pocket. To Ollie's surprise, it looked like a woman's undergarment. Jackie then took a small necklace out of another pocket and placed it upon his neck. He then touched the garment to the necklace. "If you'll bear with me for a bit, you'll see how we can become winners," stated Jackie. As Ollie watched, Jackie's form began to change. He started to shrink a bit in height, and become much slimmer. His hair started to grow out, and even cover his bald spot in the back. It became obvious that something was happening under his shirt, as two mounds started to grow. His facial features softened, his cheekbones rose, and his jawline became less rugged. Ollie's jaw dropped as Jackie's waist narrowed and his hips widened. Jackie's eyes went from their dull brown color to a brilliant deep blue. His hair was growing past his shoulders and turning from gray to a chestnut brown color. After about half an hour, Jackie was obviously now an attractive young woman. Instead of being in the middle fifties, Jackie was now obviously in his (her) young twenties. "Quite a kick, huh, Ollie?" Jackie asked in a rich alto voice. "I found this necklace one day on the ground at the track. The first time it affected me, I found myself turned into a younger man. By playing around with it, I found I could turn into anybody I wanted. After about twelve hours, I could change back. This is how we can become rich." "By becoming young women? How does that get us wealth? We marry off to rich, young men? Go whoring?" "No, Ollie, you still don't get it. With Southern Dancer's bridle, you can become Southern Dancer. With your brains in that body, you'll be able to win a few races as an unknown at huge odds. We'll lay down bets and clean up!" Ollie protested, "Now wait a minute! Me become a horse? That's about the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard! What if I should become stuck? I'd be at your mercy to change me back, I don't know if I want to risk that!" "I agree, that's why you'll place the bets. The bookies won't take my bets because of our past schemes, and you know I'm barred from racing. You place the bets with somebody only you know, and I'll have to change you back to collect." "Hmmm. I'll have to think about this," said a bemused Ollie, while looking at his companion's new body's figure. While Jackie drove them back to the diner to get Ollie's car, Ollie continued to think. Every time Jackie started to say something, Ollie waved her to silence. He stared out of the window and just kept to himself, occasionally taking a glance at his (now) attractive companion. When they arrived at the diner, Ollie got out and waved Jackie to stay in the car. He walked around to her window. "Jackie, while I may regret this, you've got a deal. Let's do some scouting for a proper race and enter a horse. I think we may be able to come up with the entry fees and enough to place a bet on a long shot. If we pick the right horse, I'll be able to win in a walk." Jackie broke out into a cute grin, "Great. I think the best one for you to be is Southern Dancer. That bridle was worn during the peak of the Dancer's racing career, the year of ten wins out of fifteen starts, and at least Show in the other races. We can't miss! I'll get back to you!" With that, Jackie put the car in gear and drove off. A few weeks later, Ollie heard from Jackie. They again met at Barrington's Diner. "Ok, Ollie," explained Jackie, "here's how we'll do it. You arrange for a few weeks vacation. We'll change you into Southern Dancer, spend some time working out so you can get used to the change, and then enter you in the Hartford Stakes. You'll lay down as many bets as you can, with the race, and we'll collect. With what we could win, you could stop shoveling shit for the rest of your life. We can't lose!" "Jackie, that may be taking it a bit far, but I know I could sure use a new start. I can get a couple of weeks off just before the Stakes, so let's give it a go!" In the few weeks before the Hartford Stakes, Jackie had a friend enter a new horse, Dancer's Daughter, in the Stakes. He then had Ollie going around to various bookies placing bets on the race. Since Dancer's Daughter was an unknown, with an apprentice jockey, the odds were long. A week before the actual race, Ollie met Jackie at the friend's farm. They then went to a corner of an old paddock as far away from the rest of the farm as possible. Jackie then had Ollie strip, placed the necklace on him, and touched him with the old bridle. At first, Ollie felt nothing odd, then a very strong tingling coursed throughout his body. It felt just like his arm had gone to sleep, but the tingling was everywhere. His arms and legs started to feel odd, and he watched them start to grow longer and thicker around. His hand started to deform, with the fingers being drawn up into the palms, except for the middle fingers. The middle finger started growing larger around, and the nail was becoming impossibly large. He realized that his arms were becoming forelegs, and the middle fingernails were becoming hooves! A quick look showed the same thing happening to his feet. He found he could no longer stand upright and fell to his knees, and then to the ground. He wound up on his side with his legs and arms out front. While this was happening, he felt a prickling all over his skin, and watched as his coat of chestnut hair grew out. A sharp pain in his nose heralded the changes to his face. He tried to watch by crossing his eyes, but soon found that he didn't have to. His face started pushing outward, with the same chestnut hair covering it. He could feel his teeth changing, too. He soon had a gap between his front teeth and his molars. His tongue felt long and wide. With a gasp, he reacted to an interesting pain on his rear. He turned his head, and could just barely see his new tail. An interesting wrenching between his legs told him of more changes. After what seemed to be hours, the changes apparently stopped. He tried to roll onto his new legs and stand up. After a few tries, he did, but was as wobbly as a newborn colt. Within a few minutes, though, he was standing firmly and tried a few steps. It was amazing, but he felt comfortable, and his first steps were confident. Soon, he was walking around easily. He tried trotting, and it came easily too. So did a canter and a gallop. For kicks, he tried a rack. It felt weird, at first, but he soon had it down. He thought it was amusing to be a five-gaited Thoroughbred racehorse. His new body was young, strong, and supple. He tried running around the paddock, and found it to be almost effortless. He galloped up to Jackie, slowed to a walk and stopped in front of him. "Well, Ollie," beamed Jackie, "it looks like you've taken well to being a horse. I saw that trick with the gaits, and thought it looked funny. You'll do fine. Let's get you to the stable so you can be ready to work out in the morning." With that, Ollie followed Jackie back to the stables of the friend's farm. During the week before the race, Ollie was up every morning for training with his new jockey. The young man was a competent rider, but hadn't had much racing experience. With Ollie as the horse, though, he was looking real good, and he thought that he was a better jockey than he really was. "Mr. Martin," the jockey enthused, "this is one helluva horse. You'd think she was thinking ahead all the time. She seems to know instinctively where to cruise and where to add the speed. She'll do the distance at the Stakes easy." While he was saying this, Ollie had another realization. All during the week, he was so intrigued by being a horse that he didn't realize one major thing. He was a She! A filly! How could that happen? His thoughts turned to the fact that Southern Dancer was a filly, and that he'd been entered as "Dancer's Daughter". He'd been so wound up in the scheme that he hadn't given it any thought. He did give it some thought now, though, since it would add a bit of a complication if he was stuck as a horse. Finally race day arrived. Ollie had been taken in a horse trailer by Jackie's friend to the track. He was put into one of the racing stable's stalls and left alone. He had trouble sleeping Friday night because of pre-race jitters. Saturday dawned clear and cool. The morning saw the owners arrive in their limos, and then the gallery started to fill up. Soon the stable was filled with active grooms preparing their charges for the upcoming races. Because the Hartford Stakes was the last race on the card, the wait was interminable for Ollie. The only break came when a young girl came up to his stall and looked at him. "Ollie, it's me, Jackie!" said the young girl in a high voice. "Since I couldn't get onto the grounds as me, I decided to come as somebody else! What do you think?" Ollie could only nod his head and nicker in reply, but this seemed to satisfy Jackie. Jackie was about to say something more, when a groom asked her to leave. The groom then took hold of Ollie's halter and took him to the saddling compound. Jackie watched them go, and then went to the stands. In the saddling compound, Ollie stood still while the halter was replaced with a racing bridle. A blanket was thrown on his back and the saddle put on top of that. The groom tightened the cinch under his ribcage, and the young jockey double-checked its tightness. He didn't want the saddle coming loose during a race. When the race was called, Jackie's friend, as the owner, gave the jockey a leg up into the saddle, and then watched him off as he joined the parade to the starting gate. Too keep in character, Ollie jumped and pranced a bit during the parade to show that he was a high-strung, spirited racehorse, eager to get on with it. As they came up to the starting gate, he allowed the jockey to hold him until it was their turn to enter the gate. Finally it was their turn to enter the gate. The other horses all seemed eager to get running, but none of them backed out or jumped around. As the backup door was closed behind him, Ollie bunched his hindquarter, waiting for the bell. It rang, the door in front of each horse opened, and they leaped out of the gate. It was a clean start. Down the front straight, Ollie gauged his position. He started near the outside, so he had to run hard to establish a good position that would allow a clean entry into the first turn. He pushed hard and managed to enter a space in fifth place just as the horses started to string out around the turn. He held his place as the rounded the turn onto the backstretch. Here was the place to push just a little, but not too much. He wanted to have something left for the Home sprint. He managed to move up one place as they started the Clubhouse turn. He held position until just into the Home Stretch. Now was the time to push! Ollie gave it everything he had, and pushed hard with all four feet. He felt as if he were flying down the track! He could feel his tail streaming behind him, and felt the clods of dirt thrown up from his hooves! His jockey could only hold on for dear life, being afraid to look to the sides or back. He didn't even use his quirt, as some of the other jockeys were doing. Ollie wasn't paying attention to much, either, since his entire focus was on the wire. He pounded down the stretch, extending his forelegs as far as possible, reaching forward with his hind legs and giving them powerful kicks forward. His breath pulsed in and out as his lungs labored with the effort. He kept running until he realized that his jockey was standing in the saddle and giving a light pull on the reins. He eased his pace and gradually slowed to a walk. They finally came to a stop and turned back. They walked along the outside edge of the track until they came to a brightly-colored section of fencing. Ollie realize that he was being guided into the winner's circle! Still breathing heavily, he walked into the winner's circle. A huge wreath was placed over his neck, and he could feel his jockey waving to the crowd. Jackie's friend was on the platform receiving the trophy for the Stakes. All too soon, the jockey dismounted and joined Jackie's friend on the platform, as Ollie was led away, back to the stables. In the stables, the groom removed the saddle and bridle, and started a rubdown. After the rubdown, a blanket was thrown over him to prevent a chill, and a small bucket of water was placed before him. He drank it down greedily, thinking that it just wasn't enough, but he remembered that a horse had to cool down quite a bit before you gave it much water. A few hours later, the track had quieted down. The owners had gone to their various race day parties, and the spectators had gone home. Ollie was quietly dozing in his stall, when he heard the door open. It was Jackie, still as the young girl! "Ollie, we have to get you out of here! There was a protest filed, and they did some checking. It seems that someone discovered that your registry number is the same one as Southern Dancer's. They're going to be here very soon to check your lip tattoo!" Ollie realized this was trouble. They didn't figure on anybody investigating the registry number, so they did nothing with the tattooed number inside his lips. Every racehorse had their lip tattooed with their registry number. This is one way they permanently identify racehorses. Jackie opened the stall and started to lead Ollie out. As Ollie came out of the stall, he bumped against Jackie. He felt an odd tingle at the point of contact. He soon felt dizzy, and stumbled. As he fell, he hit his head on one of the barn's support posts and everything went dark. He awoke to sunlight streaming in a window. He was in a room with pale yellow walls, and the air had an anticeptic smell. He looked down, and found he was in a hospital bed, wearing a hospital gown. The door to his room opened, and a nurse came in. "Well, young lady," greeted the nurse, taking Ollie's pulse and blood pressure. "How are we feeling this fine morning? That was quite a bump on the head you had." "I feel Ok, but my head's still sore," replied Ollie, a bit confused at what happened. "That's to be expected. It'll be sore for a few day, I suspect," said the nurse. "We'll be serving breakfast soon, so I hope you're hungry. Also, when they brought you in last night, you were out like a light, so can you give me your name, please, for our charts?" "Uhhh, O-o-ollie," he said. "All right, Olivia," stated the nurse, "the doctor will be coming along soon to see you, so he'll help you get things straightened out and help you find your family." "F-f-family?" stuttered Ollie. "I d-don't have any family. I'm all alone." "Oh, my poor dear," comforted the nurse, "I'll have to get the Family Services people in here, then." With that, she left the room. Ollie was left alone to ponder his new situation. "Young lady? Olivia?" he thought. What has happened to me? He pulled the covers off and started to get out of bed. He soon found that the bed was much higher than he was used to. Quickly, he found out that it wasn't the bed. It was him! He was much smaller than he once was. He went into the bathroom and looked into the mirror. The face reflected back at him was the same one Jackie had at the track. He was now the young girl! But what about Jackie? As he was going back to the bed, the door opened and the doctor came in. "Young lady, you shouldn't be out of bed. It's too soon. You need more rest before we can release you. Get back in there!" commanded the doctor. "What happened to me?" asked Ollie. As the doctor checked the chart, and then gave short examination, he said, "I really don't know, but you were found naked in the racetrack stables, out cold. You were found with one of the racehorses standing over you, like a guard. That horse was very protective of you, and the paramedics had trouble getting to you until the track officials could get the horse removed. It didn't want to leave you. It that your horse?" "N-no," replied Ollie. "I don't have any horses." So that's what happened to Jackie, though Ollie, we somehow switched. "Well, no matter. The Family Services people will be here to see if we can find your family." "I told the nurse I don't have any family. I don't know what's going to happen to me." "Well, don't worry, we'll make sure you're taken care of." The doctor left the room, and Ollie laid back in his bed with a sigh. Epilog: "Mr. Richards, that daughter of yours has sure taken after that horse. You can see how much she loves her." "Yes, she does. Olivia just dotes on that filly. She's the one that was fraudulently entered into the Hartford Stakes race last summer. While she's of excellent lineage, from her lines and racing, she won't be allowed to race because of her fraudulent history. While we can't race her, she'll be the dam of many a fine colt of filly. Several other owners are lined up for when she'd ready to breed." "How did you find such a horse?" "I didn't. Olivia did. She's been looking over the horse forms ever since we adopted her last year. It's been her passion. When we asked, she said that she just had to have that one 'ideal' horse for her to take care of. If we found the horse, she knew everything would be fine. "Well, we found the horse, and she's been the happiest child I've ever seen. She came out of the depression she'd had since leaving the hospital, and has been making real progress in school. I'm glad we found her that horse." In the paddock: "I finally found you, Jackie. I don't know what happened, but we somehow switched, and you became the horse and me the girl. When I learned what happened, I felt so guilty that I couldn't stop until I found you. When I was released from the hospital, I tried to find the medal to change us back, but nobody at the track ever saw it in the stable. I guess it's gone for good. "I got adopted by Poppa Richards, and I think I'm starting to love him and my new mother. It's going to be hard, growing up again, but I think I can do it. After all, I have you to talk to, even if you are now my pretty filly. We'll be best friends! "Our plan didn't quite work out, did it? We didn't get the money, since the win was disallowed, but at least we won't have to pay off the bets. And we both got a new start. We're both young, at an early point in our lives, with long futures ahead. We both got a lot more years ahead of us, and we'll both find out what it's like to be mothers. Not too bad for a couple of old farts like us, huh, girl?" Jackie could only nod and nicker in reply.

Altered Fates Project Zulo

(Author's Note: This story provides a finale to all the Altered Fates tales I've posted here to date. It contains spoilers for, and resolves dangling threads from, most of those eleven stories. I wrote them out of sequence, but I always knew where each of them fitted in the overall scheme. Read in order, the larger story should all fall into place with what might have seemed stray characters and random bits of business all connecting up. Even if you read the individual stories as they...

As always, any comments or criticism is welcome. Feel free to email me at [email protected]. Altered Fates A Christmas Tale

ALTERED FATES: A CHRISTMAS TALE by BobH (c) 2012 Ed Geraghty sat down heavily on the changing room bench and sighed. He felt every minute of his fifty-six years, and then some. Any positive effect on his health of thirty five years pounding the streets delivering mail had been more than offset by the same number of years spent drinking hard liquor to excess. Not that this was an option open to him any more, given the precarious state of his liver. He was not a bad man, and had...

Altered Fates Auntie Em

I originally had no intention of making this an Altered Fates story. However, after my first two drafts turned out horrible, I decided to try a different angle with it. This is what resulted. Altered Fates: Auntie Em By Morpheus Corey winced as his foot went into the puddle of water, muttering "Damn" to himself. He was already completely soaked through from the heavy rain, which gave no sign of letting up. Shivering in his wet clothes, Corey really wished that he hadn't ...

Altered Fates Babysitting

I've had this story in mind for quite awhile, but the first time I started writing it, Eric came out with a very similar Altered Fates story called The Baby-sitter Caper first. Because of that I put this one on hold for awhile. Well here it finally is. I know that the ending leaves a lot that could be done afterwards, but I left off where I was on purpose. Perhaps I'll do a sequel, or perhaps I'll just leave the rest to the readers imagination. Altered Fates: Babysitting By...

Altered Fates 3rd Strike And Your Out

Following my debut story last week (Lord's Prayer), along with the feedback I've received (thanks Eric Bloodstone, Jennifer Adams, Mindy Rich and all the others) I have gotten the bug ! This is a spin-off story from Lord's Prayer which, I hope, wraps up this episode. Altered Fates Chimera Pt1

Altered Fates: Chimera, Part 1 By Elliot Reid I stood at the window, peering out into the cold morning light. I waited a full five minutes, face squashed against the glass, feeling my nose get uncomfortably cool. The trees in the avenue were in full leaf and I couldn't see far down the street, however much I squinted. I saw a vehicle move. Was that my parents' SUV gliding back along the road? Nope, false alarm. I was paranoid my folks would return. It was known to happen. Mom...

Altered Fates Lyles Story

Lyle's Story by Grendel There are two sides to every story. Most of us would prefer to see the world in black and white, but the decisions we make are never as clear- cut as that. I know that I've made some enemies in my life, and perhaps with hindsight some of the pain that I've caused could have been avoided, but I've never deliberately acted with malice. I've just made some bad choices. I grew up in the shadow of my elder brother, Ken. He was the Golden Child, the...
