Altered Fates: Troubled Teen

Jane Kosar waited in the kitchen for her daughter to come down from her bedroom.
The knot in her stomach was a testament to the spat she knew was inevitable. At
the sound of hard heels descending the steps she turned her chair toward the
door leading to the living room.
Jane had been attractive once, but the burden of being a single mother and
dealing with the constant trouble her daughter seemed to find herself in showed
in the deeply etched lines on her face. With a sigh she looked around the
kitchen. At one time it had been sharp and modern. Now, it too showed its age.
The refrigerator was on its last leg and the stove had broken long ago and had
to be replaced by the mismatched used range Jane could afford on her single
salary.
Jane turned her eyes back to the door as Heather entered the kitchen. Jane just
managed to stifle a "tsk" of disapproval.
Heather wore a cropped top open to reveal far too much of her cleavage. A
leather miniskirt, fishnet stockings, platform sandals and too much makeup
completed her outfit.
"I suppose you're going to be seeing Jerry again." Jane accused.
Heather turned to her mother and smiled. "Yes, momma. He's such a stud." Heather
managed to giggle.
"I swear Heather, why can't you be a good girl? Are you trying to put me in an
early grave? This Jerry isn't the type of man I want my only daughter marrying."
Jane spat.
Heather looked hurt. "Why of course not momma. Truth to tell Jerry's not the
kind of man I want to marry either. But he is such a stud. You know he's hung
like a horse. And the things he does!" Heather gasped and fanned herself with
one hand, a dreamy far away look in her eyes.
Jane just colored at the unsubtle remark her daughter made.
"Oh! That reminds me." Heather said, as she walked over to her purse, slung over
the back of one of the kitchen chairs.
Taking the small leather clutch purse she unzipped it while walking to the
bathroom. She looked through the purse taking inventory out loud while Jane
pursued, "Let's see, lipstick. Have to be able to look pretty after I wear all
of this off on his lovestick. Uh huh, breath mints, oh yes, for that yucky
taste. Birth control pills? Now how did they get in there? Oh well, no matter."
Opening the bathroom medicine cabinet Heather rummaged for a second and said,
"Here we are, Trojans. Magnum, of course." The last was shot over her shoulder,
glaring at her mother.
Jane finally exploded, "HEATHER! What the hell is the matter with you? I didn't
raise you to behave like some little slut! Why are you acting like this?"
Heather put her hands down on the bathroom vanity, gathering herself and then
spun to confront Jane Kosar, her face contorted in rage.
"Do you want to know mother? Do you really want to know? I'll tell you then."
Heather stepped closer to her mother to punctuate her point. "I'll tell you why,
because of your arrogance. Because things weren't the way you like them. Because
you disregarded my person, my self determination in your selfish, self serving
desire for what you though would make your life complete!"
Jane faltered and took a step back, away from the heat of her daughter's rage.
"I never, I've always treated you well. I never remarried after your father
died. I raised you as best I could and this is the way you repay me."
"SHUT UP!" Heather roared, "My father never died!"
"He did! He did!" Jane defended, "Right after I found out I was pregnant with
you, he disappeared while fishing. The courts declared him dead two years
later."
Heather just laughed in response. Bent over, belly laughing, the last response
Jane would have expected after the emotional storm she just witnessed. Jane
Kosar worried then, worried for her daughter's sanity.
Tentatively, she touched Heather's shoulder, not knowing if the hiccupping noise
she heard was laughter or tears.
Heather whirled at her touch, slapping Jane's hand away from her. "Never touch
me bitch. You lost that right a long time ago, now I'm going to enforce it."
Jane gave her daughter a wounded look. "I don't understand you Heather. What did
I do to you? I raised you the best I could. Did I not give you something? What
was it?"
Heather just shook her head, "You just don't understand do you? You've been
living a lie for so long that it has become truth, at least for you. Let me
refresh your memory, 'mother'. Almost nineteen years ago, you strapped me into
the car seat and drove the car, with the boat trailer down to the lake. I
remember very well how it was raining, how scared I was. You unloaded the boat,
packed all the fishing gear into it, turned on the trolling motor and pushed it
into the lake."
Jane retreated from her daughter's words as if burned.
Heather advanced, flinging the accusing words like weapons. "But let's see, hmm,
seventeen years. I'm only seventeen now. I was about two then. Of course two
years later I was two again, thanks to that damn amulet."
Jane halted, stunned by Heather's accusation. "How, how could you remember?"
Heather stopped, looking suddenly satisfied. She rummaged in her purse for a
moment, and produced a cigarette and lighter. Placing the cigarette between her
ruby lips she quickly lit it and took a deeper drag, sucking the smoke into her
lungs. Tilting her head back she blew the smoke toward the ceiling and stared at
her mother.
"Simple. Hate. I hated you when you took away my life. I hated you when I saw
how you were faking my death. I hated you when you dressed me in all those
little girl things. I hated you even more when you took away the two years I had
grown toward adulthood, because you delayed my revenge. You always wanted a good
little girl. You punished me when I didn't fit your ideal. Just like you
punished Henry Kosar when he couldn't give you the child you wanted. Well, in
the end you still don't get your good little girl 'mother'.
Faintly, a horn beeped outside. Heather took another drag on her cigarette and
blew the smoke in her mother's face as she walked past. Jane Kosar stood in the
bathroom stunned by the recent events.
Heather paused at the door and looked at Jane sagging in the doorway. "Its too
bad you didn't keep that thing Jane. You could have gone back and tried growing
up all over again. Maybe this time you'd get it right."
Jane stood speechless as the door slammed behind her daughter.
