"Oh my god! Sweetie! What happened?" Adam asked his friend after opening
the door and seeing the bruise on his friend's cheek that Eric had tried
to cover up with makeup. "Dana did this. Didn't she?" Adam asked holding
his hand up next to the bruise. Eric nodded meekly. Eric was wearing a
white fur coat that fell down to his knees. He also wore a white cloche
hat and had a wooly scarf tied around his neck. He was also wearing
black heels and tan colored tights. Eric's face was heavily made up but
that was to try and hide the bruises. He also wore dark tinted glasses
to hide his eyes.
Adam looked at his friend standing on the doorstep. He looked thinner
than the last time Adam had seen him. Almost as if he hadn't been eating
properly. "Come on in," Adam said, "you can talk to me about it. Would
you like a cup of tea?" Eric nodded and Adam led Eric to the couch in
the living room and helped him sit down. Adam then went to the kitchen
to make tea. Once the tea was made Adam brought it into the lounge and
poured two cups. He then handed Eric a cup. As he did so, Adam noticed
Eric's hands shaking as he took the cup but he didn't say anything. Adam
sat down on the couch next to Eric, crossing his legs as he did so.
"So what is it this time?" Adam asked. He knew that Dana had hit Eric
before. Eric was his best friend and he always came to Adam for help and
advice. "She said it's my fault for getting her pregnant," Eric said
sniffing. "Maybe she's right. I mean, I have been asking her to have
children but..." Adam put his cup down on the coffee table and then put
his hands on Eric's shoulders. "Sweetie. It's not your fault. It's never
your fault. You didn't ask to have sex that night and its Dana's fault
for not taking precautions. Don't ever tell yourself otherwise," Adam
said reassuringly.
"You're right. It's not my fault," Eric said putting his cup down as
well. "She practically raped me that night and she wasn't taking the
pill and she didn't give me a chance to put a condom on," Eric started
crying. "There there. Sweetie," Adam said putting his arms around Eric's
shoulders. "How about we take your coat off Hmm? You must be boiling in
here." "No. It's ok," Eric said pulling away from Adam. "Eric. I'm your
friend. You don't have to hide anything from me." Eric nodded and
sighed.
Eric got up and took his hat off. He then took off his glasses which
revealed red eyes from all of his crying. There were also dark circles
under his eyes showing that he was lacking sleep. Eric then removed his
coat to reveal a red housedress that was hanging loosely on him because
as Adam had guessed he had lost a lot of weight. Taking off the cut also
revealed dark bruises on his arms. Eric hung the cut up and then sat
back down. Adam looked at his friend's arms "Did she?" he asked looking
up. Eric nodded sadly. "That bastard!" Adam said. "I can't believe she
treats you like this."
Suddenly Eric's phone rang making Eric jump. He took it out of his purse
and looked at the caller ID. "It's her," he said shaking. "Don't answer
it," Adam suggested. "I can't. She'll hit me again if I don't answer."
Eric with his hands trembling answered the phone. "H-hi sweetie. I was
j-just out shopping for groceries." Adam watched as his friend wearily
listened to his wife on the phone, flinching a couple of times as she
made threats. "O-oh. Ok dear. I'll see you later." Eric put the phone
back in his purse.
"Dana's having her mates around for a poker night," Eric explained.
"Great. Another night of dressing up as a maid and being forced to serve
them while they sit there and grope me." Eric shuddered at the thought.
"Why don't you stay the night with me?" Adam offered. "Again honey. I
can't. If she found out I was here, she'd stop me from seeing you." Adam
felt sorry for Eric and wished that he could do more. "You can't let her
keep controlling you like this. Why don't you leave her?"
"It's too late. Not with the baby coming. I can't leave him alone with
her," Eric explained. "When is the baby due?" Adam asked. "Three weeks,"
Eric replied. "I'm sorry," he said getting up and putting his coat on.
"Dana will be back from soon and she'll be expecting dinner on the
table. I have to go." As Eric opened the front door Adam pulled him into
a deep hug "Don't worry," he said. "We'll thing off something. Hang in
there." Eric sniffed and nodded. He thanked Adam for the tea and left
heading swiftly home.
Adam didn't see or hear from Eric again for another 3 weeks. He was
really worried about Eric. Suddenly, one morning. While Adam and his
wife Jasmine were having breakfast. There was a knock on the door. Adam
got up to answer it and upon opening the door, he saw his friend
standing there. He was wearing the same coat as last time they met only
this time he was holding a large pink suitcase and a baby in his arm.
"I've finally left her!" he announced with a smile on his face.
Adam squealed with joy and pulled his friend into a big hug being
careful not to squash the baby. "Congratulations," Adam whispered trying
not to wake the baby who was asleep in Eric's arms. Adam led Eric into
the lounge where they had sat three weeks ago. Eric left his suitcase in
the hall. Took off his coat and sat down, cradling the baby in his arms.
"So," Adam started. "When did you leave her? What did you say? What did
she say?" Eric took a deep breath. "This morning. I haven't even spoken
to her. She was still passed out from last night's poker game. I left a
note saying that I was leaving her and taking Sean with me," he said
referring to his baby.
"I'm sorry to bother you two so early but I didn't have anywhere else to
go," Eric said apologetically. "Oh you don't need to apologise," Adam
said laughing. "I'm just happy that you're safe." He gave Eric another
hug. Eric looked down at Sean and then back at Adam "Do you mind if we
crash here for a while? I don't have anywhere to stay" He asked "Of
course you can!" Adam said. "We don't mind at all. You have the spare
room." Adam called to his wife who popped her head round the door and he
asked her if she could take Eric's suitcase upstairs. Jasmine nodded and
proceeded to carry the case upstairs.
There was a small noise as Sean woke up in Eric's arms. "Looks like
someone's awake," Adam said tickling Sean's tummy. "Sean," Eric said
smiling. "I'd like you to meet your uncle Adam."
"Hi beautiful," Adam said gently holding Sean's little hand and shaking
it. Eric laughed. It had been a long time since he had laughed properly.
He was glad that he was finally out of Dana's control.
