Chapter 3 - Conspiracy
Two Months Earlier
"You're early," Dr. Juno remarked upon seeing the white-coat clad
researcher enter the lab. "I like that. If only the men in this world
would be as respectful," she exclaimed, returning to her microscope.
Dr. Kristina Therapon walked through the large lab to where Dr. Juno was
working for their scheduled 'stand up' meeting. Kristina was an
accomplished biochemist and had come to Octa Genomics at the behest of
Philip Krause, the company's CEO, to work with Dr. Jill Juno on her work
in chromosomal replacement.
Dr. Juno's work took a novel approach to combating hereditary diseases in
men, specifically ones associated with the presence of a "Y" chromosome.
This included many types of cancer, which was the primary focus of the
Octa team's work. By reverting the "Y" chromosome to an "X" chromosome in
various parts of the genomic sequence, the thinking was that the disease
genes that need the "Y" chromosome to activate would instead stay dormant,
averting the disease in the patient.
Kristina had arrived almost a year prior with all the right credentials
and had proved to be an able partner to Dr. Juno and her colleague, Dr.
Fabricio Teiresias. Thankfully her cover story held. She had indeed been
brought to Octa, not by the CEO but rather by the group that controlled
him, Delta Sodality. It was difficult to define what the organization
was, a seemingly small, loosely formed cabal whose goals seemed to shift
and morph with the times but who was focused on maintaining the power of
those involved. Genomic and biotech research held many possibilities for
Delta's various agenda's around the world and so Octa was purchased some
years ago and a leadership team Delta controlled was put into place.
About eighteen months ago, Dr. Stephen Strand, then Chief Science Officer,
had become aware of the details of Dr. Juno's work and brought it to
Krause's attention. In his opinion, not only did the research have
potentially dangerous outcomes, he suspected it was something Dr. Juno
planned to weaponize. He couldn't explain exactly how she would
accomplish that, but he was adamant that in conversations with Dr. Juno,
she had let it be known that even if it had the chance to change the sex
of the recipient, that that would be a good thing for the world. It
struck him that she was much more than a researcher; she was an idealogue.
"Phil, she said the world would be a better place with more women and that
the only downside to her research might be that not enough people get the
benefit of it. I mean, I'm telling you, this has bad implications to Octa
and our shareholders if this research ends up in the world," he had told
the CEO.
Krause thought he was probably right, but he also saw the potential in
controlling a process that could turn male to female. More particularly,
he knew Delta would see the potential and so he informed his controllers
who immediately made a plan. Within three months, they had helped Krause
find a pretext to fire Dr. Strand and replace him with a CSO of their
choosing. Next, they put in one of their own agents to quietly monitor
Dr. Juno's day to day work and make sure it was completed. Kristina fit
the bill perfectly.
She had been a gifted student in Germany, finishing university at 15 and
her Doctorate in Immunology by 18. Talent such as hers was the kind of
thing that drew the attention of the Delta Sodalit?t, as they called
themselves in their native tongue, and so she was recruited into their
sub-rosa ranks where she flourished.
Her father was a German engineer, incredibly intelligent, a genius really.
He was also a raging alcoholic, albeit a gentle one, who drank away all
his money. Her mother was a brilliant American researcher escaping a
mundane life and family in the rural Midwest. Seeking adventure, she had
come to Germany for post graduate work and met Kristina's father. The two
met, married and had Kristina within a year before breaking up over the
man's dependencies on alcohol shortly after Kristina's second birthday.
He would later die in a traffic accident, oddly while riding his bicycle.
Her mother, alone and rapidly becoming clinically depressed over her
failed marriage, decided to stay in Germany but grew distant from
Kristina, who soon showed signs of rare genius herself. It was in her
second year of her doctorate program when Kristina learned of her mother's
suicide, right about the time she realized she was gay.
Thanks to this difficult childhood, Kristina had learned that the only
person to depend on, to look out for, was herself. Delta Sodality not
only nurtured that impulse but rewarded it and so she had spent the better
part of twelve years in their employ.
Having an American mother meant she had a US passport and no accent to her
English. As such, Philadelphia wasn't that bad an assignment and her
cover was not difficult established. Dr. Juno, clearly a closeted zealot
of some sort, was easily manipulated. All Kristina need do was feed the
woman's ego and gain her confidence.
It was about six months ago, after a night of drinking and sycophantic
adulation from Kristina that Dr. Juno confessed her goal of weaponizing
the research. She had explained that she could create a solution of the
compounds needed to splice out the body's "Y" chromosomes and replace them
with "X" chromosomes. In fact, she had already done it on mice and rats
at her house for the last several years and had even transformed two
chimpanzees. All she needed to do know was to figure out how to test it
on humans without anyone finding out.
Kristina had feigned awe and begged her to let her help her complete her
work. She confessed to being a radical feminist and to always having
fantasies of "womyn" running the world. She vowed not to stop until
Jill's groundbreaking research was completed and successful. Jill had
fallen for it completely and so now the only obstacle was Dr. Fabricio
Teiresias.
Dr. Teiresias was also a brilliant researcher in genomics albeit a little
na?ve to the world. He had been so focused on the "can they do it"
question, he never stopped to ask if they should.
Well, at least until that Tuesday.
Dr. Teiresias was five minutes late to their usual Tuesday afternoon
'stand-up' meeting where they each took turns updating the others about
their progress. As they chatted, he had taken notice of a few things Dr.
Juno had left out at her workstation and for once he finally connected the
dots. He knew the makeup of the solution she had created and what the
composition of the substrate she used. He also knew the other chemicals
sitting on her workstation, when mixed, would create a violent reaction
with the substrate in her research solution.
"...But Jill, I don't understand why you are even mixing this other
solution. The two together would be volatile," he said somewhat urgently.
Kristina was trying to think of a way to deescalate the conversation when
Rowan, Jill's intern from the University of Pennsylvania walked up. He was
a prototypical science kid; tall and lean, borderline scrawny. He had no
facial hair on his slim, high cheek boned face and looked as though he had
no chance at developing more masculine features now that puberty was well
and truly behind him. His clothes seemed to hang off him like he didn't
know he was a 'medium' and not a 'large'. Kristina, something of a
fashionista in her private life, longed to help this poor boy look better
but she had bigger priorities. She was here for the job.
"Hey guys," he said affably as he came to them.
"Don't worry about it Fabricio," Jill said defensively, grabbing up the
two beakers of solutions.
"Just be careful with those!" he exclaimed, and his hand shot out to her
arm as if to grab it.
Fabricio's hand hit Jill's arm, failing to grab it, instead knocking it,
dislodging the beakers. Jill, instinctively understanding what would
happen when they hit the floor, turned her back and shielded her face.
The reaction was indeed violent but thankfully the heat created was not in
itself dangerous. The resulting gaseous compound however, proved very
potent.
Dr. Teiresias and Rowan both received a face full of the compound as it
aerosolized at their feet, blown upward by the explosive reaction of the
liquids in the two beakers. Kristina was shielded somewhat by Fabricio?s
body and turned away as the cloud climbed higher.
Kristina ran across the lab to the emergency ventilation button and
returned quickly. Jill was standing over the two men a little bewildered,
clearly shaken by the implications. Rowan was on the ground writhing in
pain and soon passed out. Fabricio lay motionless at Jill?s feet.
"Jill, is that the base solution? Is it toxic?" Kristina called out.
"ah...no...no. It shouldn?t be. The reagent is strong though, I didn?t
cut the solution yet so I don?t know how their bodies will react," she
replied still dazed.
"Quick, you need to help them, while I remove the research and the rest of
your solution. We can?t have that fall into anyone else?s hands. I?ll
take your laptop as well and put it all in my office. What else?"
"That folder and that binder as well," she said pointing to the two
document holders on the lab counter.
Kristina quickly grabbed everything up and hurried out of the lab.
Jill looked down at the two men and was astonished to watch the
transformation. Both rapidly took on more feminine features and the skin
on their faces seemed to soften. The boy, as she thought of Rowan, didn?t
have any facial hair anyway but Fabricio?s face had already started
showing signs of a ?five o?clock shadow?. His beard hair seemed to fall
out from their follicles and roll off his face leaving smooth and soft
skin behind. She watched as their hands seemed to reduce, their fingers
growing seemingly longer and thinner relative to their hands.
She looked on with a proud smile. Pride in knowing her breakthrough was a
reality. She could indeed administer the compound in any way she chose
with the same result. That she stood there, unharmed, also showed it was
only men that would be affected. No sisters would be in danger.
She beamed with this realization and it also woke her from her daze.
Jill bent over Rowan, now clearly looking like the woman she would be the
rest of her life.
"Rowan," she said shaking her. "Rowan, wake up. How are you, dear?
Welcome to the sisterhood," she soothed.
Rowan wasn?t fully awake, and it was clear he had been in great pain
before passing out. She couldn?t be sure that all the internal changes
were complete and that she wouldn?t disrupt them by moving her, so she
told her to lie still and that help was coming. Rowan seemed to
understand, and so Jill turned her attention to Fabricio.
Fabricio was still unconscious as she knelt over him. No sooner had she
begun checking his vitals when a woman?s voice behind her start to bellow
loudly. Rowan had made her way over to a row of steel cabinets and was
looking at herself in its reflection. She obviously wasn?t taking her
admittance to the sisterhood well. Jill needed to calm her down before
anyone came running in. It was bad enough the emergency vents had been
engaged.
"Rowan, Rowan, it?s okay," she called out.
She checked that Fabricio was still breathing and her pulse was strong and
went back over to Rowan. She knelt down and held her, shushing her and
consoling her. She didn?t really know what to say but it seemed to help.
As she finally got her calmed down, Fabricio started to wake up and she
knew she?d have to do this all over again. Thankfully Kristina returned
and turned off the room ventilation.
"We can?t have any more yelling. Is everyone good?" Kristina spoke
urgently.
She realized it was a dumb question, of course they weren?t good. Nothing
about the situation was good.
"Yes, yes," Jill replied, still holding Rowan. "Here, take her back to
your office."
She helped get Rowan to her feet and Kristina came to them and took
Rowan?s arm.
Kristina looked at Jill making sure she had her attention.
"I?ve called the medical professionals. We can take them to our offices
and meet them there. They will be very, ah...discrete," she finished,
emphasizing her words for meaning.
"Ok, you take our new sister Rowan and I?ll deal with Fabricio."
Both the women?s offices were just down the hall from the lab, so she
stood a descent chance of getting Rowan in there and keeping her calm
without any interference.
"Tell her medical staff is coming, that will keep her calm."
Kristina helped Rowan down the hall toward her office.
"I?m going to be sick," Rowan moaned urgently.
Blessedly the door to the women?s lavatory was just on their right and she
pushed through the door ushering Rowan to the first stall. She knelt
quickly in front of the toilet, vomiting loudly for several moments before
muttering "no, no, no..." and rising up off the floor.
She frantically pulled at her belt and dropped her pants, spew still
dripping down her chin. She sat quickly on the toilet, her bowels
seemingly falling out of her. Audible, liquidy sounds emanated from the
stall ask Kristina turned away.
Kristina grabbed some paper towels and returned to the stall wiping
Rowan?s face. The stench of excrement and vomit almost overwhelmed her,
but she managed to reach behind the new woman and flush the toilet. Rowan
thanked her and immediately reversed her position, vomiting again into the
toilet as the bowl?s water refilled, her new, perfect rear end on full
display. When she seemed done retching, she again reversed her position
and sat on the toilet. Another torrent of excrement filled the bowl. She
lowered her head, wearily, resting it on her arms in her lap, trying not
to be sick again.
It was about that moment that Dr. Juno violently kicked in the bathroom
door and almost flung Fabricio into the next stall. A similar series of
events played out in the second stall.
Some time passed before Rowan looked up, his face a mass of worry and
illness.
"What...what happened?"
"Let?s get you cleaned up and into my office first. Are you done do you
think?" Kristina asked motioning to the toilet.
Rowan nodded his head and began cleaning herself up with toilet paper,
mumbling as she examined her new sex.
"Side effect?" Kristina asked Dr. Juno.
"No, it?s basically the conservation of mass principle. I saw this with
the mice as well. They?re new bodies should be smaller, but they still
carry the mass of their male forms, somehow their systems have found a way
to purged excess mass. We?ll need to study how that is even possible.
The metabolic implications are..." she said seemingly fading into her own
thoughts.
Kristina turned around, "we?ll finish this conversation later," she
thought.
"Let?s get you up and to my office so you can lie down," she said to
Rowan, helping her out of the stall after she had buttoned her pants. Her
clothes seemed to hang off of her.
After Rowan had washed up in the sink, they exited the bathroom and headed
down the hall into Kristina?s office. She was careful to hold up Rowan?s
pants which now seemed only to want to slide down her legs. She sat her
down on the office couch and gave her a bottle of water before pulling a
special phone from her desk drawer.
"I?ll be right outside Rowan. Just relax, the doctor is on his way."
She retreated back through the office door and closed it gently behind
her. As she did, she pulled the phone from her pocket.
"Phil, we have a situation that I need your help keeping under wraps.
First, there are two people on their way to visit us. They are doctors
and must be shown to my office with no questions asked..."
She finished explaining the current status of both the intern, Rowan, and
Dr. Teiresias and hung up.
"Jesus, what a shit show," she thought to herself rubbing her temples.
She needed to contain this. The solution, in weaponized form, worked.
That was the good news. The bad news was there were too many people, at
least one of whom was innocent, that knew the facts which meant loose
ends. Her employers wouldn?t tolerate loose ends. Add the doctors on
their way now and you widen the circle of those who are in the know.
She looked back down at the phone and dialed a European number by memory.
It was late there, but someone would need to wake up for this.
